MIDTOWN. Police officers said they busted five men caught in the act of stealing counterfeit sneakers from a Midtown building on Thursday. According to police, an off-duty cop saw two men wearing masks, with hoods over their heads, “acting in a suspicious manner” on West 35th Street, near Seventh Avenue. Cops saw two more men break the lock on a door at that address and then a truck pull up. The men carried boxes filled with shoes into the truck, said police. They were charged with burglary. Mayor Michael Bloomberg blasted Occupy Wall Street protesters Thursday because he says they fail to report crime in Zuccotti Park, the same day a protester told Metro three rapes have allegedly occurred within park limits. At Island Smokes on the Lower East Side, customers sick of the highest tax on cigarettes in America are fighting back by rolling their own smokes out of pipe tobacco. It’s a way around New York City’s sky-high cigarette taxes, which have led to a 35 percent drop in smoking rates since 2002, according to Mayor Michael Bloomberg. Among city public school students the drop is sharper, down 52 percent since 2001, the New York City Department of Health says. But while city residents

More young adults living with parents 25- to 35-year-olds having a hard time getting work stay at home with mom and dad Women are more likely to get out on their own than men

It looks like more young adults are choosing to live at home with mom and dad these days. According to data from the U.S. Census Bureau, the percentage of men age 25 to 34 living in their parents’ home rose from 14 percent to 19 percent between 2005 and 2011. While the percentage of women living with their parents also increased during that period — from 8 percent in 2005 to 10 percent in 2011 — it’s interesting to note that both

Republican presidential candidate Herman Cain has hauled $1 million in donations in recent days, a spokesman said Thursday, despite accusations of sexual harassment that have consumed his campaign. The former pizza executive’s fundraising took a jump once his ascent in the polls began about a month ago. He brought in $2 million in the first two weeks of October. Until then, he had raised about $5.2 million after entering the race in May. Cain, who says he is innocent of charges that he

harassed at least three women during his tenure at the National Restaurant Association, appears to be raising money at an even faster clip this week. The harassment charges first emerged on Sunday and the campaign has raised $1 million since then. “Mr. Cain’s supporters around the country have rallied around him, and we have been encouraged by their strong showing,” spokesman J.D. t’s a simple, universal truth, and yet the pizza baron and would-be Republican nominee, Herman Cain, was apparently out sick that day because this week he got a crash course in this Darwinian stricture. Oh sure, he’d already been pushed around over his 999 plan, but that was just good natured ribbing of an electoral newbie. Now, however, he finds himself in a full-scale “I’ll meet you after school” D.C. smackdown over these allegations of sexual harassment. First things first: Most serious political analysts would agree that the questions being asked of Cain are valid. Anytime anyone stands even a chance of seizing the nation’s highest office, he or she better expect some

skeleton hunters to start digging through the closet. And even if all they find is a couple of dusty bones, a stiff interrogation is sure to follow.

2 Back from the dead In ‘A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas,’ Neil Patrick Harris returns to the franchise that revived his dormant career in 2004 Not only is his character revived after being shot in the last film, this time he also brings along his real-life husband, David Burtka

eil Patrick Harris has successfully come out of the postchild star wasteland to become one of the biggest stars working today, with a hit sitcom on CBS, gigs hosting every major awards show but the Oscars, and a large fan base cheering him on. And since it was his jaw-dropping cameo in 2004’s “Harold & Kumar go to White Castle” that helped relaunch his career, naturally he was game to come back for the franchise’s third installment, “A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas” — even if he did get shot and killed at the end of the last film. But you can’t have NPH return from the dead for another “Harold & Kumar” film without upping the ante on his atrocious behavior. When asked if there’s a line he wouldn’t want to cross with his onscreen alter ego, Harris insists it’s far too late for that kind of thinking. “That’s such a tough question because I never thought that any of this would’ve been written,” he says. “I wouldn’t even have imagined that I would be smoking crack

and trying to forcibly enter a dancer girl. I don’t know where the line gets drawn here anymore.” Of course, Harris’ rising profile — and public coming out of the closet — have become factors since the original film, leaving a lot for the filmmakers to address. Harris was happy to poke fun at his newfound status — he’s referred to as “America’s Sweetheart” in the film — as long as he got a say in the jokes as usual. That held especially true since Harris’ husband, David Burtka, was along for the ride this time. “I was more cautious and protective of those scenes than any of the others, weirdly, just because I didn’t want it to feel exploitative or like a sight gag and nothing more,” says Harris. “I know David to be a well-trained Albee actor from New York, and I just didn’t want it to seem like we were using him for some sight gag and then end it. And I didn’t want to leave a bad taste in anyone’s mouth about him on my watch, right?” In the end, Burtka is used to great comic effect — and we’ll just leave it at that for now. NED EHRBAR

Things to know about 007’s ‘Skyfall’

No. 1: The title! The cast and producers revealed that and more in London yesterday ‘We start shooting today,’ said star Daniel Craig There was a time, last year, when the future of the James Bond franchise was in more danger than 007 himself: The studio behind the movies, MGM, teetered on bankruptcy, leaving the series in limbo. But “Bond 23” — now officially called “Skyfall” — is a go. “We start shooting today,” announced Daniel Craig from a press conference in London on Thursday. Among the top five facts confirmed:

The title! Although previous titles have referenced creator Ian Fleming’s works, “Skyfall” is apparently brand new, with no connection. Perhaps it’s meant to evoke the Transformer with the same name. 007 versus the Decepticons? No: “It has emotional context which will be revealed in the film,” said producer Barbara Broccoli. The official 007 Twitter feed revealed more a few

hours later: “Bond’s loyalty to M is tested as her past comes back to haunt her,” it said, regarding the role that will be reprised by Dame Judi Dench. “As MI6 comes under attack, 007 must track down and destroy the threat, no matter how personal the cost.”

Villain Javier Bardem is a softie in real life. “One of the most beautiful memories I had as

a kid was going to see all these movies,” said the badass from “No Country For Old Men” at the press conference Thursday. His character’s signature quirky feature (all Bond villains have one) will remain a secret (bad haircut?). “Amazing stories on screen,” he says.

Naomie Harris, star of “28 Days Later” and “Pirates of the

Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest,” will star as field agent Eve. Is she good or evil? The Bond Girl is not telling, except to say: “I’m still pinching myself. Raring to go. I spent two months training for the part.”

Sam Mendes can handle this. The director of “American Beauty” isn’t known for his action movies. But he

said he has a good secondunit director — Alexander Witt, who directed set pieces for “Casino Royale” and “X-Men: First Class.” He added: “The action needs to coexist with the drama.”

Say this much for “A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas”: It certainly helps you forget the duo’s second outing, “Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay,” ever happened. This time around, the loveable honor roll stoners (John Cho and Kal Penn) are dealing with growing older, growing apart and taking on the holidays. The brisk comedy works best when it walks that fine line between skewering holiday classics and reveling in downright filth. It’s a careful balance, and the filmmakers don’t always maintain it. (A tribute to a key scene in “Christmas Story” involving a frozen pole and one of Harold’s more sensitive areas is particularly line-crossing.) But all in all,

In mid-October, Sonic Youth figureheads Thurston Moore and Kim Gordon announced that they’re separating after 27 years of marriage. Earlier this week, actress and She & Him singer Zooey Deschanel and Death Cab for Cutie singer Ben Gibbard announced their separation after two years of marriage. For some reason, musical romances seem to be more legitimate than Hollywood marriages. Perhaps because the résumé bullet points of

a songwriter include exploring the essence of love and giving hope to the masses. And when those people find love in their own personal lives, it makes everyone happy. But musical couplings seem rife with hazards and

a history of rock relationships being, well, rocky. Within the pop pairings there are more Bobby Brown and Whitney Houston examples than there are successful ones like Arcade Fire’s Win Butler and Regine Chassagne.

If both partners are leaders in their bands, they obviously have strong personalities. And if they’re in the same band, that’s even more challenging. Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova made a lovely musical couple in the movie “Once,” and in their band, the Swell Season, the pair made a convincing case for the existence of true love. But when we spoke with Hansard a few years ago, he said the romance route was not productive for their art: “We kind of tried it out, and decided it wasn’t for us.” Blake Hazard and John Dragonetti continue to shine as a beacon of wedded hope. In their band, the Submarines, they lyrically lay out their quarrels. “Without getting into it too much, it’s been up and

wood despises what “the man” is doing in this crappy economy just as much as we do? “Tower Heist” certainly tries to make that case, with a plot centering around a group of disgruntled apartment building employees who lose their pensions in a scam by the building’s arrogant owner (Alan Alda) — a very obvious nod to Bernie Madoff. The employees’ shock gives way to the sort of revenge fantasy that we’ve been primed for since 2008. A building manager (Ben Stiller) assembles a

motley crew of fellow victims, and his neighbor, a professional thief (Eddie Murphy) to try to steal the money back. With an obvious connection to “Ocean’s Eleven,” “Heist” is a bit less clever on the logistical details of the caper than the former film and its two sequels. “Heist” pushes itself beyond believability with its ludicrous climax, but we did specify that it’s a fantasy, not high drama. Performances are mixed, if only for Ben Stiller’s on-again, off-again Queens accent and

Gabourey Sidibe’s equally confused Jamaican accent. But it’s nice to see Eddie Murphy work with something other than a fat suit to get the laughs. The film does its best not to insult the intelligence of the audience, while still serving up a cathartic moment in which we get to watch victims of corporate greed get repaid for their losses. In a world where that kind of justice seems impossible, it’s nice to be on the receiving end of some pandering.

It’s told through the story of Mount’s character, Cullen Bohannon, a Confederate soldier who heads west seeking revenge for the death of his wife. Far from the romantic notion of the classic Western, this series is a vivid, brutal retelling of historical fact that doesn’t shy away from the ugly actions our nation took in the name of progress. “The first time I saw the pilot, I turned to the producers and told them, ‘I think we have just made the bloodiest thing ever shot on television,’” Mount says. He believes the series’ attention to the au-

thenticity of this tumultuous period — including its violence and language that is far from politically correct today — is something audiences will appreciate. “I think people are more interested in reality than just a shiny object,” he says. “I think they are always going to respond to something that is truthful. The American audience is, by and large, a lot smarter than the Hollywood people give them credit for.” In other words, don’t expect the good guy to ride up on a white steed with silver spurs and a million-dollar smile in this Western. It’s all so cheesy or fried. Research shows that the No. 1 comfort food is chips. I think that’s because people associate chips with parties and relaxing. One of the things I say in the forward is that comfort food is different things for different people, and so it depends on your memories and personal experiences.

Comfort foods are often slow-cooking concoctions. Are these doable?

How can you make comfort food healthy?

There’s this whole section on noshes and nibbles. It’s sort of like bar food. A lot of those foods are fried chips, fried wings, nachos, cheesy fried stuff. What I did there was really use my oven — making all kinds of chips in the oven, getting that crisp and flavorful punch — not relying on salt only, but using other kinds of spices and then with things like the wings, finding ways to keep the

What’s a fumble worth to you? The Chargers had the game won Monday night. If Philip Rivers doesn’t inexplicably drop a snap, they win. Period. Instead, they lost in overtime. So, what would the line for Sunday’s game against the Packers be if San Diego had won in Week 8?

At the Las Vegas Hilton, the Packers were available at -3.5 on Tuesday. Now, they’re -6. That’s because people saw the Chargers choke and wanted to bet against them. That’s the kind of reactionary, shortsighted strategy that’s best avoided.

The Giants have been thinking about beating the Patriots all week. Just don’t ask them to think about the last time they beat New England. The last meaningful game these two proud franchises played against each other was Feb. 3, 2008, in Super Bowl XLII. Giants quarterback Eli Manning threw for 255 yards, two touchdowns and won the Most Valuable Player award as the Giants knocked off the previously undefeated New England Patriots, 17-14. That was a magical night for Manning, but he said all he’s concerned about is this Sunday. “All we’re trying to do is prepare for the Patriots right now,” Manning said. “We’re trying to get ready, go up there and play a great game. We know they’re a good team. We know they’re always a playoff team. Earlier this week, a report came out that the wife of Bills running back Fred Jackson didn’t draft her husband until the fifth round of her fantasy draft, because she didn’t know what type of year he was in for. It is shaping up to be a career year for him. He is fourth in the AFC with 721 rushing yards and adds plenty to the team with receptions and good blocking in the backfield. “He continues to amaze me. He’s got all three aspects of the game. He can run it, he can catch it and he can block,” Bills head coach Chan Gailey said.

It was widely known that Bills quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick was a cerebral quarterback. He wowed scouts and management types seven years ago before the NFL draft with his intellect and Wonderlic scores, but no one knew if his play in the Ivy League could translate to Sundays. He’s had plenty of rough patches, but Fitzpatrick would hold onto the starting job. This season, he has 1,739 passing yards including 14 touchdowns and just seven interceptions.

Now in his third year with the team, head coach Rex Ryan has never won after a bye with the Jets, including a 9-0 clunker in Week 8 last year against Green Bay. For whatever reason, Ryan hasn’t found the formula for success after a bye week and he offered no specifics this week though the Jets did practice in pads on Wednesday to get the blood flowing again after the layoff.

The Bills have three players with more than 300 receiving yards — Stevie Johnson, David Nelson and Fred Jackson.

Two weeks ago, in their Week 7 win over San Diego, the Jets had the type of offensive output they had imagined when they pieced together their offense during the offseason. Running back Shonn Greene topped 100 yards rushing for the first time all season, quarterback Mark Sanchez made more right decisions than wrong ones and wide receiver Plaxico Burress finally got on track. On Sunday in Buffalo, the Jets hope that Burress will open things up in the red zone for fellow wide receivers Santonio Holmes, Jeremy
