Hip-hop goes from musical to political New party challenges status quo Enlists a former Army sergeant and Tea Party member for some guidance

“Whatever happens [next week], you’ll see this group grow and become more politically savvy.” MANSFIELD PHOTOS: RIKARD LARMA/METRO

Whether read literally or politically, the Hip-Hop Party for the People and the Tea Party seem, on the surface, to be unlikely allies. But City Council at large write-in candidate Pili X, 26, and former gubernatorial hopeful Robert Allen Mansfield say the two groups have more in common than meets the eye. “We both believe in holding the government accountable to the people they have to serve,” said Mansfield, a retired Army sergeant, citing opposition to the citywide curfew, stop and frisk policy and lack of transparency. Since meeting X at a Temple University panel discussion over the summer, Mansfield has been mentoring him on the ins and outs of municipal government and grassroots campaigning. “As he would say, he doesn’t give me advice, he teaches me lessons,” X said. The Hip-Hop Party formed in February from members of the Poor Righteous Party of the Black Nation, who met at a former North Philly shoe shop turned community center to discuss local issues. “We came together at one meeting and decided, instead of complaining about politi-

their ideas or not, young people need to be brought into the system. Hip-Hop’s issues Pili X’s campaign issues include: Increased investments in youth education, recreational activities and job training. Transforming neighborhoods by turning abandoned buildings and lots into marketplaces, community produce gardens, youth centers and permanent housing for the homeless by having communities take control of the properties and using funds from decreased police overtime. Ending the police-enforced citywide curfew and stop and frisk policies. Abolishing the School Reform Commission in favor of a community-elected school board.

More young adults living with parents

Cain campaign cash spikes amid scandal Republican presidential candidate Herman Cain has hauled $1 million in donations in recent days, a spokesman said Thursday, despite accusations of sexual harassment that have consumed his campaign. The former pizza executive’s fundraising took a jump once his ascent in the polls began about a month ago. He brought in $2 million in the first two weeks of October. Until then, he had raised about $5.2 million after entering the race in May. REUTERS

Those having a hard time getting work stay at home Women more likely to get out on their own than men It looks like more young adults are choosing to live at home with mom and dad these days. According to data from the U.S. Census Bureau, the percentage of men age 25 to 34 living in their parents’ home rose from 14 percent to 19 percent between 2005 and 2011. While the percentage of women living with their parents also increased during that period — from 8 percent in 2005 to 10 percent in 2011 — it’s interesting to note that both pre- and post-recession percentages for the ladies were smaller than that of the guys. The statistics come from

Mama’s boys? Why the higher percentage of men living at home? Lack of jobs likely has a lot to do with it. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, 9.4 percent of men age 16 and older were unemployed in September, versus 8.7 percent of women in that age group.

and has continued beyond it,” said the author, Rose Kreider, a family demographer with the Census Bureau’s Fertility and Family Statistics Branch. The findings on 18- to 24-year-olds living at home also showed an increase during the past six years. According to the census data, 59 percent of men and 50 percent of women in this age group lived in their parents’ home in 2011, up from 53 percent and 46 percent in 2005, respectively. The study counted college students living in a dormitory as living in their parents’ home. MAINSTREET.COM

Euro debt threatens Greek PM

ATHENS. Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou defied demands on Thursday that he resign over his decision to hold a referendum on the nation’s euro zone bailout deal, calling instead for his party to unite for a confidence vote in the government. Greeks have fiercely opposed the spending cuts, tax raises and job losses which have been the price of aid from the IMF and the European Union to tackle the nation’s huge debt and budget deficit. This has led to a wave of strikes and violence. Analysts declared the referendum idea dead, a relief to euro zone leaders who agreed the bailout only last week. REUTERS

Occupy protesters clash with police Police in riot gear clashed with protesters in Oakland on Thursday, firing tear gas to disperse demonstrators lingering in the streets after a day of mostly peaceful rallies against economic inequality and police brutality. Thirty large and profitable U.S. corporations paid no income taxes in 2008 through 2010, said a study on Thursday that arrives as Congress faces rising demands for tax reform but seems unable or unwilling to act. The statutory U.S. corporate income tax rate is 35 percent, one of the highest in the world; but over the 2008-2010 period, very few of the companies studied paid it, said the report. Corporations will say rightly that the loopholes that let them slash their taxes were perfectly legal, the report said. “But that does not mean that low-tax corporations bear no responsibility ... The laws were not enacted in a vacuum; they were adopted in response to relentless corporate lobbying, threats and campaign support,” the report said. Some of the 30 compa-

2 Back from the dead In ‘A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas,’ Neil Patrick Harris returns to the franchise that revived his dormant career in 2004 Not only is his character revived after being shot in the last film, this time he also brings along his real-life husband, David Burtka

N

eil Patrick Harris has successfully come out of the postchild star wasteland to become one of the biggest stars working today, with a hit sitcom on CBS, gigs hosting every major awards show but the Oscars, and a large fan base cheering him on. And since it was his jaw-dropping cameo in 2004’s “Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle” that helped relaunch his career, naturally he was game to come back for the franchise’s third installment, “A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas” — even if he did get shot and killed at the end of the last film. But you can’t have NPH return from the dead for another “Harold & Kumar” film without upping the ante on his atrocious behavior. When asked if there’s a line he wouldn’t want to cross with his onscreen alter ego, Harris insists it’s far too late for that kind of thinking. “That’s such a tough question because I never thought that any of this would’ve been written,” he says. “I wouldn’t even have imagined that I would be smoking crack

Neil and Kelly’s Christmas that never was

and trying to forcibly enter a dancer girl. I don’t know where the line gets drawn here anymore.” Of course, Harris’ rising profile — and public coming out of the closet — have become factors since the original film, leaving a lot for the filmmakers to address. Harris was happy to poke fun at his newfound status — he’s referred to as “America’s Sweetheart” in the film — as long as he got a say in the jokes as usual. That held especially true since Harris’ husband, David Burtka, was along for the ride this time. “I was more cautious and protective of those scenes than any of the others, weirdly, just because I didn’t want it to feel exploitative or like a sight gag and nothing more,” says Harris. “I know David to be a well-trained Albee actor from New York, and I just didn’t want it to seem like we were using him for some sight gag and then end it. And I didn’t want to leave a bad taste in anyone’s mouth about him on my watch, right?” In the end, Burtka is used to great comic effect — and we’ll just leave it at that for now. NED EHRBAR

In “A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas,” the boys stumble upon Neil Patrick Harris rehearsing a Rockettestudded holiday spectacular, complete with show tunes and kick-lines. But

that wasn’t the original plan, as it turns out. “It was originally pitched to me as sort of a Bing Crosby Christmas TV special with Kelly Ripa, and the two of us were in our living room with our eight

kids, wearing sweaters and singing ‘Little Drummer Boy,’ that kind of vibe,” Harris explains. “And then Kelly, who loved the idea, was filming in Prince Edward Island that very week

that we were filming and that I was available, and so she couldn’t do it. So rather than find someone else to fill her shoes, they just turned it into another solo kind of performance.”

t’s hard to believe that two of the most prominent figures in modern comedy — Eddie Murphy, 50, and Ben Stiller, 45 — have never crossed paths before their most recent release, the comedy-caper film “Tower Heist.” But not surprisingly, the two were anxious to work together for this movie, which was largely improvised. “The comedy comes out of the characters so for me, I wasn’t looking to see how funny I could be,” Stiller says. “And then of course when you have Eddie Murphy in the movie, it takes a lot of the pres-

Maybe he should,” he says. Murphy conceived of the original idea for “Tower Heist” many years ago, though it’s since been given a very timely twist. It centers around a Bernie Madoff-like businessman (played by Alan Alda) who swindles his employees out of their pensions. An-

Filming in New York City Since this film centers around a prominent Central Park building, Stiller commented on the most noticeable contrasts between L.A. and New York. “I think what you nogered by the fraud, some rogue vigilantes out of the group devise a plan to steal the money back. Given that the Occupy movement persists in many cities in the U.S. and elsewhere, Stiller noted the connection between the film and the headlines. “I think there’s a lot of frustration out there that’s valid and that’s probably what the Occupy Wall Street is an expression of,” he says. “There’s a lot of frustration in terms of where we’re at in this economic situation and so I understand where it’s coming from.”

ut don’t get them wrong. “Tower Heist” is no grim exploration of dire economic times. With the ensemble cast that includes Casey Affleck, Matthew Broderick, Michael Pena and Gabourey Sidibe, there were many spontaneously hilarious moments in the film. Murphy remembers — or perhaps fabricates? — filming a scene in which his character flirts with Sidibe’s. “[Director Brett Ratner] whispered ‘dim the lights!’ And then, all of a sudden, Gabourey’s top is off,” he says. “And then it became a

The sweet taste of revenge Don’t we all just want to know that Hollywood gets it? That despite the sevenfigure salaries their top stars make, Hollywood despises what “the man” is doing in this crappy economy just as much as we do? “Tower Heist” is certainly trying to make that case, with a plot that centers around a group of disgruntled apartment building employees who lose their pensions in a scam by the building’s arrogant owner

Building manager Josh Kovacs (Ben Stiller) assembles a motley crew of fellow victims, and his neighbor, a professional thief (Eddie Murphy) to attempt stealing the money back. With an obvious connection to “Ocean’s Eleven,” “Heist” is a bit less clever on the logistical details of the caper than the former film and its two sequels. “Heist” pushes itself well beyond

the point of believability with its ludicrous climax, but we did say specify that it’s a fantasy, not high drama. The performances are a mixed bag, if only for Ben Stiller’s on-again, off-again Queens accent and Gabourey Sidibe’s equally confused Jamaican accent. Harold and Kumar get into the holidays

The new Bond

5 things to know about 007’s ‘Skyfall’

‘A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas’ is funniest when it parodies all the Christmas classics And the raunch factor is turned way, way up

“Bond 23” — now officially called “Skyfall” — is a go. “We start shooting today,” announced Daniel Craig from a press conference in London on Thursday. Among the facts confirmed:

DARREN MICHAELS

‘A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas’ Director: Todd StraussSchulson Cast: Kal Penn, John Cho, Neil Patrick Harris Rating: R Grade:

Say this much for “A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas”: It certainly helps you forget the duo’s second outing, “Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay,” ever happened. This time around, the loveable honor roll stoners (John Cho and Kal Penn) are dealing with growing older, growing apart and taking on the holidays. The brisk comedy works best when it

walks that fine line between skewering holiday classics and reveling in downright filth. It’s a careful balance, and the film-

makers don’t always maintain it. (A tribute to a key scene in “Christmas Story” involving a frozen pole and one of Harold’s more sensi-

tive areas is particularly line-crossing.) But all in all, it’s good, filthy fun. Of course, what everyone’s really here for is some naughty Neil Patrick Harris action, as his cameo in the first film helped make it a cult classic and relaunch his dormant career. And he doesn’t disappoint here, poking fun at his public image and even getting husband David Burtka in on the fun. His slice of screen time — including a festive, kick-linefilled song and dance followed by NPH sexually assaulting a Rockette — is the highlight of the film.

2: Villain Javier Bardem is a softie in real life. “One of the most beautiful memories I had as a kid was going to see all these movies,” said Bardem at the press conference Thursday.

A BRAVE, THRILLING

“American Beauty,” isn’t known for his action movies. But he said he has a good second-unit director — Alexander Witt, who directed set pieces for “Casino Royale” and “X-Men: First Class.” 5: And perhaps most important: Will Craig and Bardem take off their shirts? “Damn right,” said producer Barbara Broccoli. MWN

3: Naomie Harris, star of “28 Days Later” and “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest,” will star as field agent Eve.

Olsen and Hawkes on the cult of ‘Martha Marcy May Marlene’ You’d think that celebrated actor John Hawkes, 52, and newcomer Elizabeth Olsen, 22, might lack a rapport after having shot a number of fiercely awkward scenes in their new film, “Martha Marcy May Marlene.” The former plays the charismatic leader of a small cult in the Catskills and the latter plays one of his newest followers — for whom he has both a paternal and somewhat romantic affection. Fortunately, the two actors are plenty comfortable talk-

“There’s a lot of room for you to fill in details. It’s a satisfying thing having it that way rather than having it all sledge hammered into your head that this is how to think and this is exactly how it went.” JOHN HAWKES ON HOW THE CULT IS PORTRAYED IN “MARTHA”

ing about all of their strange and disturbing onscreen moments together. The cult initiation scene is especially tough to watch. What’s the most difficult part of filming something like that? Hawkes: One of the creepiest

things about that was that there were rats in that little spot, and I really dislike rats. We were all hoping — [to Olsen] perhaps not you, because you were on the ground — but that one would just kind of run

Olsen: I had no idea. I was like, “You want me to do what? OK.” Hawkes: She was really game and courageous. One of the most fascinating things about the movie is the cult itself. Did you work out a backstory for the group?

Hawkes: I think that [direc-

tor Sean Durkin’s] approach wasn’t to be obtuse for that sake — but more that it’s the most interesting way to tell the story. That’s part of the haunting aspect of it, that it’s not all answered for you and there’s a lot of room for you to fill in details. Q&A

The real ‘it’ girl

Liz, so much press for this film has discussed you as being the new “it” girl. Since you’ve been exposed to fame from a young age with your sisters [Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen], do you think you’ve handled this attention differently than an outsider would have?

Maybe. But it’s not just my family. It’s also growing up in L.A. and having lots of my friends, their parents being professionals in this business as well, in all different aspects. I never thought of acting as the red carpets and the glitter or whatever. I always thought of it as work.

John Hawkes and Elizabeth Olsen are teacher and student ... and then something more, in “Martha Marcy May Marlene,” which is in theaters now.

add the cheese. I’m still using the real cheese and that’s giving you the flavor. Rather than using cream, I’m just thickening milk. It doesn’t compromise the texture and you still get the cheesy flavor.

Not if you ask Ellie Krieger The master of good-for you-and-delicious meals makes guilt-free wings Krieger is the samurai of healthy cooking that tastes good. Why? She won’t sacrifice flavor for anything. Low-fat cheeses, be damned. She won’t go there. And in her latest book “Comfort Food Fix: Feel-Good Favorites Made Healthy,” Krieger conquers what most chefs would deem impossible. We spoke to the Food Net-

work star about her making of miracles. What are the hallmarks of comfort food?

It’s all so cheesy or fried. Research shows that the No. 1 comfort food is chips. I think that’s because people associate chips with parties and relaxing. One of the things I say in the forward is that comfort food is different things for different people, and so it depends on your memories and personal experiences.

Comfort foods are often slow-cooking concoctions. Are these doable?

How can you make comfort food healthy?

There’s this whole section on noshes and nibbles. It’s sort of like bar food. A lot of those foods are fried chips, fried wings, nachos, cheesy fried stuff. What I did there was really use my oven — making all kinds of chips in the oven, getting that crisp and flavorful punch — not relying on salt only, but using other kinds of spices and then with things like the wings, finding ways to keep the

One common ingredient in comfort food is a cheesy sauce. How do you make that healthy?

These are totally pareddown and doable for the average cook. You don’t need to be a chef to do these recipes by any stretch, but they’re a little bit more like slow food. There are definitely some recipes that you might make for the holidays or that you might make for the weekend or that you might make for the week and freeze it.

n the digital age, where most listeners purchase single songs online for $1.29, does it really make sense to rerecord your hits and package them with new songs? If you’re Boyz II Men, it’s not just about trying to entice people to buy your entire album at the local retail outlet, says singer Nathan Morris. “When you’re signed to a major record label, they sign you for a certain time and after it’s passed, you’re allowed to re-record songs,” he explains. “One of the reasons we thought it would be cool is that now we can rerecord our songs and we can physically own the masters ourselves and we can license them to whoever we want to license them to ver-

And yes, their new album is called “Twenty” because they’ve been together for two decades. Morris says this milestone anniversary was very much present in their minds when they went into the studio. “It was cool. The fact that we were able to perform all of these songs with the original producers is a good thing,” he says. “It wasn’t tedious at all. Love on the rocks for rock couples Musical marriages are not easy, as the singers we spoke to will tell you And that goes double if you play in the same band as your spouse

W

hile Kim Kardashian contin-

ues to run unchallenged for most newsworthy divorce in the universe, elsewhere in the entertainment industry there have been a few other quiet uncouplings that are no less newsworthy. In mid-October, Sonic Youth figureheads Thurston Moore and Kim Gordon announced that they’re separating after 27 years of marriage. Earlier this week, actress and She & Him singer Zooey Deschanel and Death Cab for Cutie singer Ben Gibbard announced their separation after two years of marriage. For some reason, musical romances seem to be more legitimate than Hollywood marriages. Perhaps because

the résumé bullet points of a songwriter include exploring the essence of love and giving hope to the masses. And when those people find love in their own personal lives, it makes everyone happy for them.

But musical couplings seem rife with hazards and historical examples of rock relationships being, well, rocky. Within the pop pairings there are more Bobby Brown and Whitney Houston pair-

ings than there are successful ones like Arcade Fire’s Win Butler and Regine Chassagne. If both partners are leaders in their bands, they obviously have strong personalities. And if they’re in the same band, that’s even more challenging. Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova made a lovely musical couple in the movie “Once,” and in their band, the Swell Season, the pair certainly made a convincing case for the existence of true love. But when we spoke with Hansard a few years back, he said the romance route was not productive for their art. “We kind of tried it out, and decided it wasn’t for us,” he said. Blake Hazard and John

to shine as a beacon of wedded hope. In their band, the Submarines, they even lay out their relationship difficulties lyrically. “Without getting into it too much, it’s been up and down,” said Dragonetti when we spoke to him this past spring. “We’re trying to figure it out. It gives us stuff to write about.” Hazard chimed in, “I don’t think there’s quite a way for writing about things without pulling any punches.” Bethany Cosentino of the band Best Coast, who dates Wavves singer and guitarist Nathan Williams, told Metro last year that the most difficult part of dating another musician in the spotlight is the public’s perception. “It’s not like we were like, ‘Oh hey, we both play music, let’s start dating,’” she said. “We’ve known each other for five or six years.”

Earlier this year, Nick Prueher was faced with an unlikely problem. His Found Footage Festival was booked to go on at the same time, in the same building, as the Found Magazine tour. Although both rockstars of the genre, the events draw a niche group of people who live for finding dusty suitcases full of other people’s embarrassing love letters and shaky home videos. Rather than compete, he approached Found mag’s Davy Rothbart, and they combined the events. “It was like meeting a long-lost brother that you

I’ve had that, too!’ But of course if you feel like you’re brothers with someone, the natural instinct is to want to fight them.” Which brings us to this

Lady Gaga reportedly had so much fun making out with “Vampire Diaries” star Taylor Kinney during the shoot for her “You and I” video that she’s reportedly decided to keep it going off-camera as well, according to Us Weekly. “They’re hooking up and getting to know each other,” a source says. Denise Richards has reportedly rekindled her romance with Richie Sambora, according to Us Weekly. “They’ve always stayed friends, through everything they’ve gone through,” a source says. “He’s had a rough patch, she’s had her own stuff, but they’re both in a great place right now.” The pair dated in 2006 after she split from Charlie Sheen and he divorced Heather Locklear, but the relationship only lasted about a year. Now the pair are said to be “doing great and happy.”

While Ashton Kutcher has come under fire due to allegations of infidelity, new reports suggest Demi Moore might be in the same boat. According to In Touch, Moore got more than a little friendly with a young pal of Kutcher, actor Ben Hollingsworth, one night after picking him up from a party. “They wound up having sex in the back of the car,” a source claims. “It just kept going from there.” But not too far, as Hollingsworth called off the affair soon after. “He was getting to be better friends with Ashton and he felt bad,” the source explains. Sex in a car? Why do we need to know these graphic details? Between Kutcher having sex in a hot tub and Moore doing the deed in the back seat of a car, it’s as though these two have something against beds.

Take the case of recently bankrupted MF Global. The firm bet big on risky European debt. Had the risk paid off, execs like CEO Jon Corzine, the former Democrat governor of New Jersey, stood to enrich themselves generously. They lost their bet, but the risks were borne by their investors — including pension funds of hard-working Americans. Corzine may even take millions more in the form of golden parachute bonus money. The Chargers had the game won Monday night. If Philip Rivers doesn’t inexplicably drop a snap, they win. Period. Instead, they lost in overtime. So, what would the line for Sunday’s game against the Packers be if San Diego had won in Week 8?

WEEKEND, NOVEMBER 4-6, 2011

At the Las Vegas Hilton, the Packers were available at -3.5 on Tuesday. Now, they’re -6. That’s because people saw the Chargers choke and wanted to bet against them. That’s the kind of reactionary, shortsighted strategy that’s best avoided.

ADAM LEVITAN’S ANTI-CHALK BLOG WWW.METRO.US PICKS, TRICKS AND MORE

If the Chargers had won that game — as they essentially did — the line probably would have held at Packers -3.5, or maybe even -3. But thanks to a fluke fumble, we can grab three extra points on the Chargers. It’s like stealing points. ADAM LEVITAN

Eli Manning right there with Pats QB People laughed when Peyton’s little bro called himself ‘elite’ But it’s looking like he was right QB battle highlights Super Bowl XLII rematch GETTY IMAGES

The Patriots and Giants will meet on Sunday for the first meaningful time since ... well, you know. But don’t expect to see many of the faces from Super Bowl XLII this week — those days are long gone. Two main ones, however, will remain: Tom Brady and Eli Manning. Manning made headlines prior to the start of the regular season, when he said he was in the same “elite” class as Brady. Eli Manning? In Tom Brady’s class? Ha! But maybe he was on to something. The Giants are sitting at 5-2 — the same record as the Patriots — and their quarterback is a huge reason why. Taking a look at the numbers, Manning appears to very much so be in Brady’s class this season. Manning ranks third in the NFL in passer rating (102.1), just behind Brady’s second-best 104.4. Brady sits fourth in the league in yards (2,361) and completion percentage (67.6). Manning is fifth in both categories (2,127, 64.7). And the Giants QB has thrown three fewer interceptions than the Patriots’

The cold, hard football facts A look at this weekend’s NFL action through the eyes of the football stat experts at coldhardfootballfacts.com.

Philadelphia’s run at history The Eagles’ ground game is on pace to be the best ever. LeSean McCoy, Michael Vick and Co., average an incredible 5.78 yards per attempt. But history says it will not be enough to win a Super Bowl. Champs have always dominated the air, not the ground. Here’s the record of the 10 best rushing teams in NFL history ... none of which won a playoff game. 1. 2011 Eagles (5.78 YPA, 3-4 record) 2. 1963 Browns (5.74, 10-4) 3. 1945 49ers (5.65, 7-4-1) 4. 1997 Lions (5.51, 9-7) 5. 2006 Falcons (5.47, 7-9) 6. 2010 Eagles (5.43, 10-6) 7. 2007 Vikings (5.33, 8-8) 8. 1958 Browns (5.32, 9-3) 9. 2002 Vikings (5.30, 6-10) 10. 1984 Rams (5.29, 10-6)

Ffchamps.com’s ‘Start and Sit’ Start him Falcons RB Michael Turner looks to be a good play. The Indianapolis Colts have allowed the most fantasy points (18.6 per week) to opposing running backs this season. Combine that stat with the fact Turner has rushed for more than 100 yards in each of his last two games, and you get a recipe for a bang-up day by the Burner. They’re in the same class on the field ... and on the party scene.

signal-caller. “I think any player in the league, they always feel confident in their ability,” Manning said. “Whether you just played a great game or you just played a poor game — you feel that next week you’re going to go out and play

great and make every throw and make every play and put your team in situations to win games. I think that’s the attitude that most athletes have.” In the grand scheme of things, Manning will never be Brady. But he’s proving that he’s capable of

hanging around with the big boys. And against a secondary like the Patriots, just hanging around may be enough to get the job done. JIMMY TOSCANO sports@metro.us

Sit him We no longer refer to Titans RB Chris Johnson as CJ2K; he’s now CJ-NO-K, since he isn’t coming anywhere close to sniffing 1,000 yards. He’s been so bad that he’s actually being outperformed by his backup, Javon Ringer.

Union fall in MLS playoffs Dynamo beat hometown club 1-0 in finale Take aggregate series, 3-1 Philadelphia’s season over When push came to shove, the home team just wanted it more. Such was the case Thursday night at Houston’s Robertson Stadium, as the Dynamo scored a 1-0 victory over the Philadelphia Union to win their two-game, aggregate Eastern Conference semifinal MLS Cup playoff series. The Dynamo advance to face Sporting Kansas City in the Eastern Conference finals. In a mostly sluggish first half, the Dynamo connected in the 48th minute when Brad Davis sent a sidewinding kick toward the middle of the field. The ball was re-directed off the head of Brian Ching and past Union keeper Faryd Mondragon in the back right corner of the net. Needing two goals just to force overtime, the Union had no answers. Houston Dynamo’s alltime record in home playoff games after Thursday night’s 1-0 victory over the Philadelphia Union. Dynamo clogged all passing lanes, controlled possession and essentially killed the clock for the final 45 minutes. Philadelphia finished with just four total shots on goal in the series finale. The Union had been facing tough odds from the outset. The hometown club entered the postseason party as the youngest team in the MLS Cup playoffs. Meanwhile, Houston won back-to-back championships in 2006 and 2007, while posting a 5-1 all-time record in home playoff games. Make that 6-1 after Thursday’s victory. MIKE GREGER

Freedom of speech is protected by the First Amendment. Of course, freedom of the press is also covered in that inalienable right. So, with those two things in mind, Eagles wide receiver Jason Avant attempted to clarify controversial comments he made about Eagles fans following Sunday’s win. Avant, one of the most affable guys on the entire roster, was quoted as saying the following: “We don’t want people jumping on our bandwagon now. We want people to go out and still talk bad about us.” Avant addressed reporters yesterday for the first time since dropping that bombshell. The veteran wouldn’t apologize and said he thought his comments were blown out of proportion by the media. “The fans I guess called in stations and gave their opinions, right? I’m a person, this is America, right? I can have an opinion, right? That’s my opinion,” Avant said. “I take offense when you have signs outside talking about firing my coach. I take offense to it. Definitely not apologizing for that.” Avant added that every-

one, specifically pointing to the reporters surrounding his locker, knows that he’s not malicious in any way. In fact, Avant is one of the most religious players in the Eagles’ locker room, as evidenced after every big catch when he raises his hands to the heavens in jubilation. “I play my hardest for Jesus Christ and this team,” he said. But how about those fair-weather fans that jumped off the bandwagon? Are they allowed back? “Who am I to allow anybody back?” Avant said. “I am a guy who goes over the middle. I don’t have that type of authority. Everybody is welcome back.” MIKE GREGER

McCoy sent home with stomach flu

GETTY IMAGES

LeSean McCoy was sent home early yesterday with a stomach flu. But don’t panic or read too much into it. Eagles coach Andy Reid said McCoy wouldn’t miss more than one day. Ronnie Brown and rookie Dion Lewis split the first-team reps in McCoy’s absence. “He got pumped with the IVs and hopefully he’ll be here [Friday], Mike Vick said of McCoy. In an interesting twist, McCoy — along with Vick and Phillies shortstop Jimmy Rollins — were spotted at the Jay-Z/Kanye West concert Wednesday night. However, McCoy’s illness doesn’t appear related to that show.

McCoy

“No, I’m absolutely sure [it wasn’t related to the concert]. He had a little bit of it before the concert, Reid said yesterday. MIKE GREGER
