Four years ago as Mayorelect Michael Nutter got ready to take office, his focus was squarely on crime, education, ethics reform and rolling back the city’s onerous tax structure.

A few months later, the bottom fell out of the economy and most of his time was spent pulling the city out of a financial hole and recreating jobs that suddenly vanished. Along the way, he admits he made some missteps, such as trying to shutter city libraries, but has mainly stuck to his campaign priorities.

“Obviously the recession did have an impact, but it didn’t stop us from doing the things we said we were going to do,” Nutter said. “The reality is that we didn’t change the original plan.”

Nutter is a huge favorite in tomorrow’s election against political newcomers Karen Brown, a former Democrat running as a Republican, and Independent hopeful Wali “Diop” Rahman. While the Wharton grad isn’t overly confident of his re-election, he’s clearly looking ahead to chapter two of his mayoral story.

“I’m tremendously optimistic about the future of this city,” he said. “I love this city, I love these people. I’m hopeful that the voters can give me this second opportunity to continue to serve as mayor of the city of Philadelphia.”

UNIVERSITY CITY. A man died Saturday night after plunging into the Schuylkill River.

Police and the Marine Unit pulled the man, an unidentified white male approximately 40 years of age, from the water shortly after he was seen in the river near Chestnut Street and Schuylkill Avenue at 6:37 p.m. Authorities estimate that he was only in the river for five to 10 minutes.

The man was taken to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, where he was pronounced dead at 7:19 p.m. His identity has not yet been released.

The circumstances of his death are unclear.

Tot’s history Toys for Tots started in 1947, when a group of U.S. Marine reservists got together and cleaned up small toys and gave them away to needy families.

Now it’s one of the biggest nonprofits in the nation.

Toys for Tots works by giving away the toys they collect to other nonprofits in the greater Philadelphia region.

Snooki laughing all the way to the bank This gossip columnist is guilty of saying a few negative things about the force of nature that is Nicole “Snooki” Polizzi. And I’m not the only one.

“People are very, very rude to me. I’m probably one of the biggest celebrities who is bullied by people. The thing is, it doesn’t get to me. In high school, I got bullied so bad that now I am such a strong person,” the pint-sized star told Metro while promoting her new perfume “Snooki by Nicole Polizzi,” which will debut on Nov. 25. “When people do talk about me, at least they are talking about me, you know? It’s not really a big deal to me.”

But one thing you can’t make fun of her for? Her weight — girlfriend looks fantastic. Her secret? She stopped what got her famous in the first place. “I stopped drinking,” she claims. “I hardly drink when we’re not filming the

show, so that helped a lot.

Above is a booking photo, taken last year on Dec. 21 in Las Vegas, when she was arrested for battery domestic violence, injury/destroying property and threatening telephone calls. The reason for the hubbub? Apparently, Yeater showed up at an old boyfriend’s

home, claiming he knocked her up (it is assumed it is the same baby that she later claimed Bieber fathered). A fight broke out, Yeater assaulted the guy, and she was arrested, according to TMZ.com.

This doesn’t mean that Yeater isn’t telling the truth about Bieber, but it certainly puts a dent in her credibility. There is no word on when the paternity test is scheduled, but maybe instead of blood work, they should just see if that baby can dance like Usher? That should settle things.

Felicity Jones bares all The ‘Like Crazy’ star on the film’s heavily improvised, nonstop filming and how it changed her approach to acting What the British actress does to decompress after work

B

ritish actress Felicity Jones makes a name for herself with “Like Crazy,” a lyrical portrayal of a young couple (Jones and Anton Yelchin) dealing with the harsh realities of romance at odds with the practical world. It’s a bold, emotionally honest performance, and one Jones had to maintain throughout shooting.

The heavily improvised film was shot nearly round-theclock, with the two leads never knowing what exactly would make it on screen.

An odd working experience, to be sure, but one Jones says changed her life.

You were pretty much in character constantly during the shooting of this movie.

How was that?

You just have to live and breathe it for the time that you’re making the movie, so you don’t have the mindspace to think about anything else but that. We were all at a point in our lives where we wanted and were able to just completely immerse ourselves in this project. We just spent every minute of the day with each other. It became this rather intimate triumvirate with Drake, Anton and I. How has your approach to other projects changed after working this way?

I found after “Like Crazy,” it was a revolution in many ways, in that all the ideas I’d had about acting and about performance were completely changed. And after “Like Crazy,” I felt this incredible calmness that I’d never had before.

As an actor, because you don’t have control over the whole product, you become quite the perfectionist. But after “Like Crazy” I suddenly just felt more relaxed about letting things be, and that the whole ethos of improvisation is that interesting creative things will happen if you relax. I took that mantra with me. I think every few years there’s a job that completely changes every-

Um ... lots of alcohol. (laughs) Don’t put that in.

Just reading and watching movies, and moving very little from the couch to the kitchen is the main thing.

What’s interesting is — because we shot so much

footage and the takes are so long — is that you just keep going until you find something interesting. You can be filming 40-minute takes and things like that.

It was really unclear where the story would go, and actually things that were in the outline that were in the original script didn’t end up in the final film.

That summer courtship montage does go by incredibly fast.

Exactly, exactly. But in a way I think that’s what makes it so powerful, because as an audience you feel like, “I want more of that!” Which is how they feel.

Is the â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Freshman 15â&#x20AC;&#x2122; just a myth?

College students do gain some weight, but itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s far less than popularly believed, shows a new study WWW.METRO.US/ EDUCATION

No more than 10 percent of all college freshmen gained 15 pounds or more â&#x20AC;&#x201D; and a quarter of freshmen reported losing weight during their first year.

The results show that college students gain weight steadily during their college years, with women gaining on average seven to nine pounds, and men between 12 and 13 pounds.

Metro readers are more than TWICE as likely than the average Philadelphia resident to plan to go back to school.

The study, conducted with the University of Michigan Dearborn, used information from a study of more than 7,000 people nationwide. The National Longitudinal Survey of Youth 1997 interviewed people between the ages of 13 and 17 in 1997 and continues to interview the same people each year since then. REUTERS career education

The idea that college freshmen gain an average of 15 pounds in their first year of school is simply untrue, the co-author of a new study said last week. In fact, the average is really between 2.4 pounds for women and 3.4 pounds for men. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Not only is there not a â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Freshman 15,â&#x20AC;&#x2122; there doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t appear to be even a â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;College 15â&#x20AC;&#x2122;,â&#x20AC;? says Jay Zagorsky, research scientist at Ohio State Universityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Center for Human Resource Research and co-author of a study on college weight gain.

A variety of factors thought to be associated with freshman weight gain were considered, including living in a dormitory, going to school full or part time, pursuing a two-year or four-year degree and heavy alcohol drinking (the consumption of six or more drinks on at least four days per month).

What made a significant difference in weight gain was heavy drinking. Heavy drinkers gained less than a pound more than students who did not drink.

The researchers also examined what happened to the students' weight after graduation and found they typically gained another 1.5 pounds a year in the ďŹ rst four years after college.

After being gashed for 292 yards in the first two weeks of the season, the Eagles knew they had to make a change.

So defensive coordinator Juan Castillo tweaked his depth chart and moved Jamar Chaney to his old spot, at middle linebacker.

It took some time — the defense surrendered 409 yards on the ground in the three games after the switch — but it’s finally paying off. Chaney’s voice in the locker room and his leadership in the huddle have helped turn the corner for a once-struggling linebacking corps.

“We’re not under heat no more? I didn’t know,” said strongside linebacker Moise Fokou, while laughing. “We knew things had to break sooner or later, we just been working hard week in and week out, and trying to get better.”

Chaney’s emergence is a bit of a surprise, since he was an unheralded seventh-round draft pick out of Mississippi State. But the 25-year-old has all the intangibles and he’s thriving in his new role.

“I like the middle,” Chaney said. “On most teams, the MIKE is the signal caller and leader on defense. A lot of stuff gets put on the MIKE, and I like when that is put on me.”

Penn St. campus rocked by sex scandal, coverup Penn State’s football program enjoyed a bye this past weekend.

For administrators, however, the weekend was anything but peaceful.

On Saturday, allegations that a former coach sexually abused eight boys rocked Happy Valley. Retired defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky was arrested and released on $100,000 bail after being arraigned on 40 criminal counts. He has since been banned from campus.

But the plot thickened.

Penn State athletic director Tim Curley and administrator Gary Schultz are accused of perjury for failing to report Sandusky’s transgressions.

The two reportedly saw Sandusky assault a boy in a shower at the team’s practice facility and didn’t re-

The Phillies tried to add Jim Thome to their roster last August, but Cleveland claimed the slugger off waivers. A few months later, Thome was sitting at Citizens Bank Park with a new Phillies uniform. The team signed the first baseman to a one-year deal during the weekend worth a reported $1.25 million.

“It’s kind of surreal, to be honest, to be sitting here with the team they have and what they’ve done in the National League and in baseball,” Thome said Saturday. “It’s been fun to watch them from the other side and now it’s even better to sit

Congress looks to lock in transport funding Spending on highway, bridge and transit would be kept at current levels plus inflation for two years under a bipartisan proposal by a Senate panel.

The legislation, described in an emailed statement from the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee last night, doesn’t say how to fill the $12 billion gap between revenue from the 18.4 centsper-gallon U.S. gasoline tax, which raises money for these programs, and the amount needed to maintain spending over that period.

The committee is scheduled to consider the bill on Nov. 9.

Plans by Toyota and Honda to run factories overtime to recoup production lost to parts shortages caused

by Japan’s earthquake may be delayed until early 2012 because of flooding in Thailand.

Toyota, Asia’s biggest carmaker, is scaling back output in Japan for a third week and suspended overtime in North America for a second week as disruptions from the floods spread. Honda is temporarily eliminating overtime and running North American plants at half capacity until next week as Japan’s third-largest automaker assesses its inventory.

“For both Toyota and Honda, they really won’t be able to expand production as planned until the first quarter of 2012,” said Tracy Handler, a Troy, Mich.-based analyst with IHS Automotive. “They’ve certainly been really unlucky this year.”

Time for superbike Motorists can get excited for self-propelled two-wheels, it’s all right And the price tag can suit those with high hopes for slick, fast ride Of all the vehicles I’ve tested this year, from Lamborghinis to electric cars, the one I’m most obsessed with is a bicycle.

A $3,200, carbon-fiber Cannondale road bike to be exact. We’re all good drivers, and we all know how to ride a bike, right?

Not so fast. Similarities between cycling and driving sportscars were quickly apparent. You’ve got to pick the right car or bike for you, then learn to properly use it. I’m a runner, so my fitness level was good. Bike handling skills were another thing altogether.

I’d signed up for the 52mile Ramapo Rally in Mahwah, N.J. It wasn’t a race, but it would be competitive. I had visions of knock-

ing everybody over.

Cannondale Bicycle Corp., which was acquired in 2008 by Dorel Industries Inc., has its headquarters in Bethel, Conn., so I reached out. Michael De Leon, senior public relations manager, invited me on an employee

De Leon and I started our rally in hard rain. I was feeling strong, especially on the hills. It was just like driving on a racetrack, inches off another Porsche’s bumper. Exhilarating. I loved cycling.

Then, on the last big hill, my energy buckled.

My legs slowed and I sucked wind and the group slowly pulled away. In biking parlance, I’d been “dropped.”

“You were really strong,” De Leon said when I finished. “You just need to learn to pace.” Pace to retain power? One thing I never had to worry about while driving a Porsche.

Where

motor speed meets salt I recently drove on Utah’s Bonneville Salt Flats, famous for records of more than 600 miles per hour.

My top speed was 122.

Let me repeat: 122 rather paltry miles per hour, driving a slightly modified Suzuki Kizashi sedan. I’ve gone faster uphill in an old pickup truck.

It was a lesson. Nothing goes according to plan in amateur racing, and the salt flats can be a cruel place. Even so, I had an uproariously good time.

How could I not? I was surrounded by homebuilt machines created with the singular purpose of blurring across the desert at 200, 300 and 400 miles an hour.

Speed demons have been making pilgrimages to Bonneville since the early 1900s, when “Terrible” Teddy Tezlaff drove an open-cockpit car 141.7 mph. By the 1960s, jetpowered machines that look like ground-skimming rocket ships were breaking 600.

It’s the ultimate “racewhat-you-brung” ethos.

With the variety of classes, world records are made and broken every year.

When I wasn’t not going 130, I spent my time gawking at the array of vehicles.

I’ve never experienced such a dazzlingly diverse group of crazy machines, some impossibly long and low, with massive stabilizing fins on the back. Buck Rodgers, your car is ready.

Others look like oldschool hot rods. Then there

were the motorcycles. How does one drive over 200 mph on two wheels? A guy named Mark DeLuca would run his bike that day at 237.6 mph.

For pure shock and awe, however, my favorite was the Joint Venture diesel truck. A “highly modified” 1997 Freightliner originally designed to pull a trailer, this semi has more than 4,000 hp and rear tires from a Boeing 737. Monstrous doesn’t begin to describe it.

Salt flats where?

The former lake is located off Interstate 80 along the Utah and Nevada border. The vast expanse has no trees or shelter, but is partially covered by a layer of naturally-occurring salt. The surface on the salt is hard and flat.

There are miles to reach extreme speeds and —

more importantly — slow back down with the aid of rear parachutes.

The area is public land, so anyone can enter official events like Speed Week or World of Speed and drive most anything, as long as the vehicle passes safety inspections.
