In a few decades, you’ll probably be working in your underwear with a robot handing you coffee and an apartment door so smart it might recognize your friends’ faces. Those are some of the ways New York might look differently in 2050, according to Dr. Ulrich Eberl, author of “Life in 2050.” In the New York of the future, Staten Island ferries might dodge wind farms, like the kind Mayor Michael Bloomberg already suggested putting in Long Island waters. The skyline will also look different, with towers sprouted at the World Trade Center and 10 different subway trains zooming below in the Fulton Street Transit Center. Getting into Manhattan will be much easier, said Jonathan Bowles, executive director of the Center for an Urban Future. “I’m not suggesting flying taxis for sure,” Bowles told Metro, “but I think improvements in transit will

Cops arrested him after he was reportedly spotted hitting a parked car in Harlem Twice the legal limit The president of the New York Public Library was arrested for driving drunk while reportedly trying to maneuver around the marathon Sunday, hitting a parked car instead. Cops said Anthony Marx, 52, ran into a parked car Sunday afternoon on East 138th Street in East Harlem. His blood alcohol content was reportedly 0.19, twice the legal limit. The car is registered to the New York Public Library, according to the New York Post. Melissa McCarthy: Don’t fear the jumpsuit After she took the stage to launch Ivory Soap’s new “Soap Dish” Facebook community for moms in New York City on Tuesday night — and was presented with a giant bar of Ivory carved in her likeness — Melissa McCarthy took a few moments to chat with Metro about the possibility of a sequel to “Bridesmaids,” the summer blockbuster that made her a household name. “[It’s a] yes for me, [but I] don’t know that it’s happening,” McCarthy she told us. “I’ll basiattended Tuesday night’s cally show up any“Soap Dish” event where with those in New York City. women — even if it’s, like, a long bus trip, I’ll go with them — but no talk of it yet. Hugh likes Lohan Hugh Hefner is excited about Lindsay Lohan’s upcoming appearance in Playboy, saying the actress’ all-revealing photo spread is “classy, very classy,” he tells “The Insider.” “It’s a classic tribute inspired by the original Tom Kelly nude pictorial of Marilyn Monroe, a portion of which was the original playmate in the very first issue of Playboy.” And apparently readers

will be treated to Lohan’s words as well. “The pictorial is absolutely fantastic and very tasteful,” Lohan’s rep says, “and will be accompanied by an interview that will let readers see another side of Lindsay.”

I love a jumpsuit.” And when we asked if she’s creating the line to be a role model for girls who aren’t a size zero, the awesome actress just laughs. “No, I think I’m just selfishly making it for myself!” She elaborates: “I want separates, for the love of God, because everything’s like a bad prom dress. Is there a direct correlation between high gas prices and the Duggars breeding?

Like the Brady Bunch ... but on steroids Someone please stop Michelle and Jim Bob Duggar. The reality TV couple and human rabbits announced yesterday on “Today” they are expecting their 20th child this spring — this after their 19th baby, Josie, was born at only 25 weeks and survived a host of expensive and life-threatening medical problems. Michelle also suffered preeclampsia and gallbladder problems through that pregnancy.

“We are so excited,” said Michelle, 45, who is three and a half months into her new pregnancy. Jim Bob, 46, echoed his wife’s sentiments, saying, “Michelle and I both feel like some of the most blessed parents in the world.” “We didn’t want to stop on an odd number,” he added. Whew. Here I thought they wouldn’t have a good, medical reason for putting Michelle’s life at risk and adding to an already crowded world. Being particular about an odd versus even number is totally logical.

‘Bad Kid,’ excellent show

In his new one-man show, storyteller David Crabb takes the audience on a journey through his Texas teenage past — and some choice outfits For most of us, those formative years are best kept hidden and forgotten in the deepest depths of our memories. So revisiting those moments — let alone making a play out of them — takes a lot of guts. And yet David Crabb is willing to relive his youth in front of an audience that may or may not applaud and enjoy the joke that is his life. In his latest one-man show, “Bad Kid,” Crabb plays himself, a Texan teenager whose coming-ofage journey is hazed by drugs, alcohol and cigarettes and titillated by sexual identities, confusion and experimentation. David Crabb is a “Bad Kid.”

To make things worse, this 17-year-old walking disaster is packaged in goth clothing and shady makeup as he waddles through high school and a perpetual “high” life. “Those years were so saturated and concentrated with events and happenings and mishaps. And through all these, there are lessons to be learned,” Crabb explains today. As he recounts his life, the veteran storyteller employs a deft and often humorous use of voice mimicry to bring to life his colorful cast of characters. His narration reveals patchy

Things to know about ‘Call of Duty’

The year’s most anticipated video game hit shelves yesterday For those who haven’t been playing nonstop since then, here’s why it’s such a big deal

The world needs saving from the comfort of your couch again in the new first-person shooter video game “Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3.” COURTESY OF ACTIVISION

When we say ‘Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3’ is the biggest game of the year, we mean it

In fact, this could be the best-selling game of all time, beating the previous record-holder, last year’s “Call of Duty: Black Ops,” which racked up more than

$1.5 billion in sales. That’s more than the worldwide gross of any film ever, save for “Titanic” and “Avatar.”

So what’s the game about? World War III, basically Like any good blockbuster, New York, Paris and London are among the cities terror-

ized, turning into virtual battlegrounds — and Russia is an antagonist. In singleplayer mode, it’s up to you to stop the threats. In multiplayer mode, you can team up to help or just shoot the hell out of someone else.

The Activision title goes beyond the box The service “Call of Duty: Elite” logs your stats and allows for social networking; a premium version leads to actual real-life prizes and more.

Celebrities are involved! “Grey’s

Anatomy”

star

Kevin McKidd voices a Task Force Captain, and character actor William Fichtner (“Armageddon”) and Corey Stoll (Hemingway in “Midnight in Paris”) play Delta Force ops.

Don’t confuse this with ‘Battlefield 3’ The other recently released big combat game, from EA games, also involves nuclear terrorism, multiplayer battle and scenes in Iran, Paris and New York. Both titles have rabid fan bases. But an analyst told Forbes he expects “Battlefield 3” to sell eight million copies. “Modern Warfare 3”? Sixteen million. METRO

A woman and her dog Susan Orlean spent 10 years researching and writing the new book on the world’s most famous dog How Rin Tin Tin captured her — and the world’s — attention

“Rin Tin Tin: The Life and the Legendâ€? looks at how a soldier from California found the original Rin Tin Tin on the battleďŹ elds of the ďŹ rst World War and made him — and his successors — a star.

Best-selling author Susan Orlean keeps expecting someone to drop off a German shepherd dog at one of her readings any day now. “I keep assuming someone will show up with one, she laughs. “But so far, no dog. It would be a fitting gift for Orlean. After all, she is the mastermind behind the definitive new book about the most famous German shepherd dog of all time, Rin Tin Tin. And it wasn’t just because she was a dog person that she decided to spend 10 years of her life researching and writing “Rin Tin Tin: The Life and Legend.

If you go Susan Orlean Tomorrow, 12:30-2 p.m. Fall 2011 Lecture Luncheon New York Public Library $40, includes box lunch www.nypl.org

“What took it from just being an afternoon spent goofing around on Google to a book was the complexity of the story, she notes. “Of course, Rinty was a dog, and that made it irresistible. But the thing that really made it for me was sometimes the more you research, the more things become small and familiar. Here, it was just the oppo-

site. The more I learned, the more it grew and it just became a bigger and bigger story. Orlean’s account of Rin Tin Tin — the world’s first canine film star and, arguably, the most successful dog brand of all time — is hitting shelves when a slew of other bigtime books about dogs are also being published, notably Jill Abramson’s “The Puppy Diaries and Julie Klam’s “Love at First Bark. Orlean is diplomatic towards her competition. “There’s just a huge emotional tie to all things dog right now. People really love their dogs — and they really love to read about them.

The dog behind the name One reason Rin Tin Tin has stayed in the public consciousness for more than 80 years was his name. “It’s mysterious and memorable. It sounds like a nonsense word, almost, says Orlean. “The other movie star dogs at the time, Braveheart and Wolfheart, are lost to time. They’re just less distinctive names. DOROTHY ROBINSON

COURTESY OF MOVEMBER

The go-to guide Dr. Aaron Katz’s new book, “The Definitive Guide to Prostate Cancer,” looks at diet and treatment options — both traditional and holistic.

Prostate cancer hits one in every six men. Adam Garone, the founder of Movember, is trying to do something about that.

“I spend every day, every week with prostate cancer,” says Katz, the founder and director of the Center for Holistic Urology at Columbia University. “Thirty-five thousand men die annually from prostate cancer. Men need to stop being afraid of getting tested or getting treated.”

MJ: The cult of irresponsibility RE: “MJ DOCTOR GUILTY OF MANSLAUGHTER”: Despite

pleas of “more milk [propofal]” by Michael Jackson (apparently devoid of personal responsibility), Dr. Conrad Murray was found guilty of involuntary homicide because he was supposed to act as the ultimate stop gap for the harmful behaviors of his patients. Meanwhile, in our recent economic upheaval created by a burst mortgage and real estate bubble, while many wannabe home owners thirsted for homes they couldn’t

afford, mortgage bankers were supposed to be the ones to say no. Wall Street traders were supposed to say there was no market for subpar mortgages and ratings agencies were supposed to condemn toxic products. They did the opposite. So why aren’t they sent to jail for involuntary fiscal malfeasance? DAVID DIBELLO, BROOKLYN

New Cain on the block RE: “CAIN ACCUSED OF GROPING”: Even if the alle-

gations by that chick who looks like Christie Brinkley’s evil twin are true,

Horoscope

It’s a sad comment on the reality show mentality of this country that Herman Cain’s clumsy sexual advances have caused his problems — not his extremely dangerous economic and social policies.

then Herman Cain is in good company. His alleged penchant for the ladies pales in comparison to lotharios such as Bill Clinton and Martin Luther King Jr. MICHAEL CHIMENTI, OAKLAND GARDENS

Scorpio Oct. 24-Nov. 22. Important matters you negotiate will work out to everyone’s satisfaction if you get everyone playing off the same sheet notes. Show them how to make beautiful music together. Sagittarius Nov. 23-Dec. 21. Two ambitions that have been looking questionable can easily be fulfilled if you keep your eyes on the prize. Focus will be the key to your success. Capricorn Dec. 22-Jan. 19. Being a bit of a risk-taker can be both good and bad, depending on how you handle things. If you gamble on yourself, it’ll be OK, but wagering on others could be another story. Aquarius Jan. 20-Feb. 19. If you have an important matter hanging fire, it behooves you to press for closure while things are going your way. Don’t hesitate to be firm. Pisces Feb. 20-March 20. You have a special ability to sway others to your way of thinking and doing things. You can easily convince them to back you in whatever you choose. Aries March 21-April 19. Don’t waste the day playing or doing nothing, because it could be one of your better times for developing financial and material opportunities. Make hay while the sun shines.

PAUL SIMONS, VIA E-MAIL

I don’t know if Herman Cain is my top choice for president; I need to know more about his character. What I know for sure is that if it came to deciding between Cain and Obama, the issue is clear — I’d vote for anyone over a man who has done everything in his power to diminish our economy and national security.

No reason to complain, OWS Instead of standing around complaining, Occupy Wall Streeters should ditch their tents and pick up a briefcase. It took me a year to find a decent, paying job after college — but after 500 resumes I managed to land three offers. Coming from a poor background, I had to take on a lot of debt; but I am now confident I’ll be able to pay it back. America is still the land of opportunity.

3 In the news

There are plenty of known quantities — asking for big money — on the free agent market, but there’s also a big question mark from Japan.

Fire up the hot stove

Free agency officially started this week and teams are already talking deals You know the Yankees will be shopping for a pitcher But can the Mets bring back their star shortstop?

The free agency market this year is topped by the greatest player of the last 20 years. He’ll likely stay in

1

St. Louis though. Metro looks at five intriguing free agents, including a couple that could be Yankees:

Albert Pujols — Pujols has been the biggest free agent all year and remains so after winning his second World Series title. Pujols enters free agency in a year

when many of the big markets don’t have openings at first base. It’s difficult to imagine the Cardinals not retaining him even if it takes $25 million per year.

Jose Reyes — Reyes’ free agency has been a day that many Met fans have dreaded. Reyes may not get Carl Crawford’s $140 million, but figure on at least $100 million. With the Mets

2

appearing to cut payroll to the $110-115 million range, this does not bode well for their fans. The Marlins have already shown interest, but the Giants and even Nationals could be players.

3

pitched 250 innings is hard to come by. Wilson might not be a Yankee or a Red Sox, but he can pitch against them — going 4-1 with a 1.56 ERA in nine starts.

C.J. Wilson — Despite his poor postseason, someone will pay for Wilson’s services and possibly even offer $100 million. A 16game winner that has

4

Jonathan Papelbon — Despite giving up the two-strike hit that officially eliminated the Red Sox, Papelbon was significantly better last year. The Phillies are a possibility.

5

Yu Darvish — If he decides to leave the Nippon Ham Fighters, teams will have to pay a posting fee. The Yankees are reportedly interested.

Paterno on his way out After 45 years it wasn’t supposed to end like this. The New York Times reported yesterday that Penn State football coach Joe Paterno is headed for the exit in the wake of his former assistant Jerry Sandusky being charged with the molestation of eight young boys. Paterno reportedly plans to coach this weekend, but support from the board of trustees is wavering.

Neighborhood Profile: South Slope YAEL GLINA

TERRY NAINI OF PRUDENTIAL DOUGLAS ELLIMAN

Restaurants, families and artists have kept this Park Slope stepchild bustling How it stays homey As patrons walk into Roots Cafe in Brooklyn’s South Slope, they’re greeted with affection. While every neighborhood in NYC may have its “locals,” Park Slope’s southern neighbor has grown famous for its community feel and affordable cost of living, especial-

Money matters The prices don’t lie Of the 98 apartments for sale in South Slope, 40 are two-bedrooms with a median price of $589,000. On the rental side, a two-bed goes for a median price of $2,950, compared to $3,400 in North Park Slope.

ly compared to the ’hoods that surround it. Which is why developers and residents are asking: Will South Slope’s increased popularity lead to the overdevelopment seen in areas such as Williamsburg or Downtown Brooklyn? All signs for now point to a safe future, as those who have come in have taken steps toward keeping the brownstone culture intact. “It has the perfect mix of city feel and community aspects,” says resident Yael Glina. “It’s got everything you need without being too busy.” This lack of overcrowding may be due to its distance from a major subway hub, as the trip to Mid-

town Manhattan will take 30 minutes or more. “Over the last three years, a majority of the purchasers have been younger families with a baby on the way — as you can still get a two-bedroom under $600,000 with all the bells and whistles of Park Slope,”

Apartments at 226 15th St. range from $450,000 to $1.2M. At 182 15th St., they go from $365,000 to $899,000.

explains Stephanie O’Brien of Prudential Douglas Elliman. The area may not earn jokes about needing stroller lanes like Park Slope does, but new developments such as 182 15th St. and the Karl Fischer-designed 226 15th St. have sprung up without pricing families out.

Other than the commercial and residential development on Fourth Avenue, these new buildings, in the heart of the neighborhood, seem to be capturing the charming aesthetics that surround them rather than building the glass towers that symbolize overdevel-

opment in other areas. Combine this homey feel with a pint and grilled cheese at neighborhood hot spot South, and it’s safe to say the Slope is only pointing upwards. JARED KLEINSTEIN letters@metro.us
