Voters, analysts say he must take lead on turning around city schools, sluggish economy Nutter excited by fresh new Council to work with RIKARD LARMA/METRO
In a race that featured little suspense, Mayor Michael Nutter cruised to re-election last night by defeating Republican challenger Karen Brown and independent hopeful Wali “Diop” Rahman. Nutter’s victory either signaled his ability to convince voters that the steps taken in his first four years were significant enough or the lack of faith in two candidates largely unknown to most voters. He must now help turn around a 10.9 percent jobless rate and a Philadelphia School District plagued by budget woes and leadership turnover. The school district has experienced eight straight years of improved test scores, but been plagued by controversies regarding the superintendent, School Reform Commission and budget woes. State lawmakers are also pushing for vouchers, which could further hamstring the district. “If education is the longterm issue, then jobs are the relatively short-term issue,” said Zack Stalberg, executive director of the Committee of Seventy, a political watchdog group. Nutter recently appointed two new members to the five-member SRC and has shown more involvement since the spring. Nutter, in his victory speech last night, said his administration has put some of the city’s problems “on the ropes, but we have not delivered the knockout

Major overhaul in City Council Six of the 17 lawmakers who make up the city’s governing body elected last night will be newcomers in January, which could mean an opportunity for Nutter to do a better job of building relationships. “He has not had a great working relationship with City Council and this gives him an

Looking back at Nutter’s first four Voters disagree on mayor’s achievements in first term N. Philly down on Nutter, Center City seems content RIKARD LARMA/METRO
Opinions about Mayor Michael Nutter’s past term and political future varied greatly between polling places in Center City and North Philadelphia, almost uniformly for and against the incumbent respectively. “All he does is post his picture and say, ‘Vote for me,’” said Stephanie Hamilton as she sat outside the 12th and Cambria Recreation Center, where voters from both the 9th and the 10th divisions in the 37th ward cast their ballots. “He needs to do more stuff for the community. He’d rather build casinos and parking lots and show up for everything to get publicity.” In exit polling of a few

voters at the Eighth Ward’s 15th division in Center City just south of Market Street, three people who cast a ballot for Nutter all found his first term satisfactory. “I’m looking for more of the same. Maybe a more active partner within the
school system,” one voter said. Another woman in North Philadelphia criticized Nutter for a lack of community engagement. “What happened to working with kids and investing in education? Nothing has changed since he has been in office. Nothing,” Carol Short said. Still, one North Philadelphian was sympathetic. “I think some things could improve, but I like him,” said Norman Sabu. “He did what he had to do in order to keep the city afloat given the economic crisis.” ALEX WIGGLESWORTH awigglesworth@metro.us

ROB WONDERLING PRESIDENT AND CEO, GREATER PHILADELPHIA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE
BLURRING CITY LINE FOR BUSINESS City Avenue, commonly referred to as City Line Avenue or U.S. Route 1, is known throughout the region as the dividing line between the city of Philadelphia and the Montgomery County suburbs of Lower Merion. City Avenue is a hub of business activity, shopping and dining. It is home to two universities and boasts the seconddensest office population in the region.
he border between the two counties is often used figuratively and literally to illustrate the differences between doing business in Philadelphia and doing business in the ’burbs. Sadly, Bala Cynwyd is often seen as the place just over the border to escape city taxes and regulations. Each year, countless individuals open up businesses just outside Philadelphia due to the city’s Business Privilege Tax and other onerous fees and taxes. Its unusually high tax rates make it difficult for the city to compete with other jurisdictions in attracting and retaining businesses and residents. Unfortunately, the numbers confirm what we suspect. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the city continues to lose jobs. In 2010, Philadelphia had an average of 657,000 jobs. By August of this year, the number had declined to 647,000. In an effort to turn the tide, Philadelphia City Council passed legislation last week to begin to reduce the financial burden on businesses trying to grow or start up. For years, the Greater Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce has worked hard to push for these much needed changes. One bill, introduced by Councilwoman Maria Quinones Sanchez and Councilman Bill Green, is a BPT reform bill designed to provide significant tax relief for Philadelphia businesses — including start-up firms, which are an engine of job growth. Another bill, introduced by Councilman Jim Kenney, seeks to eliminate, waive or reduce certain fees and permit charges on new businesses.

The bill, known as “Jumpstart Philly Legislation,” is designed to entice businesses to locate here and to create new jobs for local residents. Specifically, the measure provides all new businesses with a two-year BPT exemption and a waiver on all business-related license fees for the first two years. It also eliminates the Business Privilege License Fee for all businesses beginning Jan. 1, 2014.
T
ogether, these measures represent a significant step towards reducing the tax burden on existing and new businesses to promote growth and job development in Philadelphia. With unemployment in Philadelphia hovering around 12 percent, the business community applauds the sponsors of these bills and Mayor Michael Nutter for recognizing that reducing taxes on new and small businesses will spur the economy and grow jobs. – Rob Wondering is President and CEO of the Greater Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce. Here I thought they wouldn’t have a good, medical reason for putting Michelle’s life at risk and adding to an already crowded world. Being particular about an odd versus even number is totally logical.

Selected Risk Information About JANUVIA: Serious side effects can happen in people who take JANUVIA, including pancreatitis, which may be severe and lead to death. Before you start taking JANUVIA, tell your doctor if you’ve ever had pancreatitis. Stop taking JANUVIA and call your doctor right away if you have pain in your stomach area (abdomen) that is severe and will not go away. Symptoms of serious allergic reactions to JANUVIA, including rash, hives, and swelling of the face, lips, tongue, and throat that may cause difďŹ culty breathing or swallowing, can occur. If you have any symptoms of a serious allergic reaction, stop taking JANUVIA and call your doctor right away. Kidney problems, sometimes requiring dialysis, have been reported. If you take JANUVIA with another medicine that can cause low blood sugar (hypoglycemia), such as a sulfonylurea or insulin, your risk of getting low blood sugar is higher. The dose of your sulfonylurea medicine or insulin may need to be lowered while you use JANUVIA. Signs and symptoms of low blood sugar may include headache, drowsiness, weakness, dizziness, confusion, irritability, hunger, fast heart beat, sweating, and feeling jittery. Your doctor may do blood tests before and during treatment with JANUVIA to see how well your kidneys are working. Based on these results, your doctor may change your dose of JANUVIA. The most common side effects of JANUVIA are upper respiratory tract infection, stuffy or runny nose and sore throat, and headache.

Shakespeare was a fraud?
myentertainment COLUMBIA
Roland Emmerich — the self-proclaimed Master of Disaster behind ‘Independence Day’ and ‘2012’ — takes on the literary establishment in his latest, ‘Anonymous’ While he was busy making millions with disaster films like “Independence Day,” “The Day After Tomorrow” and “2012,” German director Roland Emmerich secretly had a completely different kind of film in mind — one about the true authorship of Shakespeare’s plays. And while he does manage to sneak an explosion or two into Elizabethan London, “Anonymous” is indeed a completely different film than what he’s made before. And he always knew bringing it to the world would be “an uphill battle.” Do you have your own opinion about the identity of Shakespeare?
I side with the artists and writers. I side with Mark Ryland, Derek Jacobi, Walt Whitman, Henry James, Sigmund Freud, Charlie Chaplin, Orson Welles — all these people believed that the man from Stratford didn’t write it. The problem with this whole
Q&A What made you want to take on this subject? The orthodox scholars have a huge problem with the work of Shakespeare. How can a commoner write only about the point of view of an aristocrat? Why is there so much poetry? It’s very hard to believe that it was written by a guy who was a younger man who was just coming to London as a commoner. The whole thing just doesn’t make sense. We wanted to just show another version of it.
thing, anyway, is there’s the literary establishment — the educators, the professors, the school teachers and all these people who write books about the man from Stratford. They’ve devoted their whole lives, and
now the Master of Disaster comes along and makes this movie — maybe I’m the antichrist, we don’t know yet. They’re thinking I am. But whatever it is, they have to bedevil me, they have to kind of think this is all nonsense, but it isn’t. And it’s an uphill battle, I knew that going in. The last time we spoke, you were casting this film. How is it to show the finished product to the world?
It’s a little nerve-wracking, but it’s always nerve-wracking whenever you make a movie. You have to show it, you know? I actually do movies mainly because I want to see them, but films are so expensive, you have to show them to people. Lots of people! And that’s always nerve-wracking for me, because I’m just afraid that they’ll throw tomatoes at me or something. NED EHRBAR METRO WORLD NEWS IN LOS ANGELES

‘Raising Hope’ springs eternal ISABELLA VOSMIKOVA/FOX
How a Fox comedy gets away with such bold backstory choices so late in the game Creator talks big decisions The writers of “Raising Hope” come up with such reckless backstories (mildmannered main character Jimmy Chance’s angry goth phase, his father’s decision to fake a kidnapping to go live in a Winnebago with a stranger, etc.) it almost seems as though they’re constantly thinking the show is about to be canceled. But creator and executive producer Greg Garcia says the moment that they found out they were renewed for a second season was actually when they started taking these wild liberties. “If anything,” says Garcia, “it was more like, ‘Hey, we’re green lit for a second season. Looking like ‘Six Million’ bucks Next week’s episode follows the show’s newfound tradition of unexpected guest stars adding to the backstory as the Chance family gets a last-minute visit from Jimmy’s wealthy paternal grandparents — played by none other than “The Six Million Dollar Man” and Mrs. Partridge (aka Lee Majors and Shirley Jones, respectively).

and get crazy with this!’” It’s not like the show began with the most regular premise — Jimmy, a 23year-old grocery store employee has a one-night stand with a serial killer, gets her pregnant, and has to raise their daughter after she is executed. Meanwhile, Jimmy still lives at home, with his senile great grandmother and his parents, who are only about 15 years older than he is. But Garcia and company took it a few steps further. “I think just toward the end of the season, we — the writers and I — sat down and thought about what would be a good season ender,” he says, “then we came up with all those peo-

video that he was a musical prodigy. As he tries to reclaim his talent, he can’t match the younger version of himself, played hilariously by young YouTube sensation Greyson Chance, who not only has the same last name as the characters, but
looks a lot like Lucas Neff, who plays Jimmy. “His YouTube videos blew my mind along with all of the other teen girls out there,” says Neff. PAT HEALY

Banderas: ‘Back to my family’ COURTESY OF SONY PICTURES CLASSICS
Antonio Banderas and Pedro Almodovar reunite for the horror film ‘The Skin I Live In’ ‘Pedro is a genre in himself,’ the star says of his director “The Skin I Live In” reunites Antonio Banderas with the director who kick-started his career. “With Pedro Almodovar, there is a very close relationship since the beginning of the ’80s,” says Banderas, who starred in five films for Almodovar between 1982 and 1990. “This is almost 30 years, and for me this movie was going back to my family.” It’s not that Banderas didn’t want to return to his family all these years. It’s just that something always got in the way: “We’ve had the opportunity to work together a couple of times, but I was attached to other movies so legally I couldn’t

Tie Me Down!”, Banderas has become an international star, of course, finding success in Hollywood — though that’s not necessarily the path Almodovar would’ve chosen. “He would’ve loved for me to stay in Spain and play only in his movies,” Banderas says with a laugh. “But he had to understand, at the same time, because he’s my friend and I have to do different things. He’s really happy that ... I made a career that was different to the one that I had there.” Reteaming with his old friend meant the actor had to do some unlearning — as Almodovar typically insists his actors do. It’s a sacrifice worth making, Banderas says. “Pedro is a genre in himself,” he says, a hushed reverence creeping into his voice. “Pedro has been

suggests, is that Almodovar makes films that need time to reach full resonance, something he’s seen with “The Skin I Live In,” which has been playing in European theaters for nearly two months now. “You need time to digest and to put to-

DANIEL CLOWES
Artist Daniel Clowes on his latest graphic novel Meet Andy, his cigarette-wielding teenage superhero
E
ven if you’re not a graphic novel aficionado, you probably know the work of Daniel Clowes. A frequent contributor to The New Yorker and The New York Times Magazine, Clowes has written two movies based on his comic works, “Ghost World” and “Art School Confidential.” In his latest book — the bold, zesty “The Death-Ray” — Clowes follows a 1970s teenager named Andy, who, with a puff of a cigarette, discovers his special powers. And once Andy gets his hands on a special ray-gun, Clowes turns the traditional superhero story on its masked head.
A kid who smokes a cigarette to discover his secret powers is subversive — and brilliant.
It seemed like, in a way, the most taboo thing that
And he needed a way to discover his powers. So … What is it about the secret super hero story that’s so attractive to artists?
Clowes’ self-portrait
could ever happen in a work of art. If you had a movie where a kid smokes a cigarette, it is less likely it would be made than if he injects serum into his arm with a needle or takes blotter acid to attain super powers. Are you a smoker?
No. And I can’t stand to be around people who smoke. My dad even died of lung cancer. But you can’t say there isn’t a certain adolescent appeal to smoking.
I read superhero comics as a kid and was really attracted to the way they looked; the early Marvel comics especially seemed so charged with electricity. I read them until I was 12 or 13 or so and then I lost interest. They suggest this rich world of imagination, but they never quite live up to that as you’re reading them. I just wanted to create a story that seems to have some depth and resonance but also uses the iconography of the old super hero comics. And, sure, I do feel some primal attraction to that costume-wearing kid in a dark urban environment. DOROTHY ROBINSON

“I have a small collection of small toy ray guns, and the one in the book is based on what I had as a kid,” says Clowes. “I like their sound effect.”

mystyle Why is Tom’s Wife Smiling? Miss Piggy is
having her fashion moment
And the simple trick he used to help him perform like a 20 year old! Without drugs, pumps, or embarrassing doctor visits. By, Stefan Rothler; Freelance Health Writer; If you’re like Tom, you know how frustrating it is when you can’t “Stand Up” for yourself. Especially in the bedroom! And even though your wife tells you “its okay”— she secretly wishes you weren’t such “a softy”. For your sake and hers.
Tom’s Story: Tom M. had a big problem. His love-life was “coming up short”. And like a lot of men his age, he had a tough time “performing” in the bedroom. But Tom’s wife was kind. She reassured him with words like “it’s no big deal”--- but it really was. So she urged him to get some help. He took her advice… Tom searched the web for answers, and came up with nothing but scams. Everything he tried failed. He thought about asking his doctor about that well-known “little blue pill”. But it was way too expensive (as much as $30.00 per tablet). Plus, it doesn’t work for 32% of all men who try it. And according to its warning labels you could wind up deaf, blind, or even dead! It’s just not worth the risk.
The Secret of the Adult Film Industry And by age 60, you’re left with a fraction of the HGH you used to have. The signs of aging become impossible to ignore... narrower shoulders and more weight around the middle... thinner skin that loses elasticity... creases and wrinkles... aching joints and brittle bones... all signs that your body is gradually breaking down. Add to that, decreased desire and ability and a loss of muscle tone that leads to a dangerous loss of agility and balance. But none of this has to happen...
Secret of The Rich and Famous As Tom continued his research, he came across something unusual. He read that male actors in the adult film industry use something called “Herbal Virility”. Before filming, the actors would pop one of these tiny pills in their mouth--- so when the director yells “action”- there’s always plenty of it! It’s been the secret of adult film producers for years! That’s because instead of taking a full-hour for it to work, Herbal Virility starts giving you “solid, long-lasting results” almost immediately after you take it --- no waiting! Tom was excited to try it. After all, Herbal Virility helped thousands of men get back their confidence in the bedroom. And since its all-natural Herbal Virility is a lot safer than drugs. There are no pumps to hassle with, no embarrassing doctor visits needed and it’s surprisingly affordable. Plus, it’s based on Nobel prize-winning research...
Here’s How It Works: In 1998, three scientists shared a Nobel Prize for discovering that the chemical compound nitric oxide (or NO) plays a vital role in widening your blood vessels so blood flows more freely... especially in the “intimate areas” of your body. When you’re young, nitric oxide flows abundantly through your body. Unfortunately, as you grow older, your NO production starts to diminish. As a result, so does your love life. That’s why Herbal Virility is so important. Just pop a Herbal Virility into your mouth. Its proprietary formulation has no bitter taste and dissolves quickly into your bloodstream.
WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 9, 2011
Herbal Virility contains all 25 of the most potent natural male enhancement boosters on earth. It helps kick-start your body’s natural ability to produce nitric oxide on its own. So you’re ready for action when you want it --- and as often as you want it. You’ll get a “big boost” of confidence in the bedroom. And your wife will be so excited she may wake up the neighbors!
Rave Reviews Coming in Everyday Most men, who experience Herbal Virility’s firm results, can’t get enough of it. Here’s what people are saying... W. Pritchett II of Newport News, VA, tells us; “After I turned 52, I couldn’t get it to work. I thought my fun was over. But now, thanks to Herbal Virility I can heat things up in the bedroom anytime I want to.” Please send me another 6 month supply!” Melissa M. of Key Largo, FL reports; “Herbal Virility saved our marriage! What a difference it made in my husband. He’s like a new man! All I can say is WOW!”.
Not Available in Stores The demand for Herbal Virility has been overwhelming. And until now, there just wasn’t enough of it to go around. That’s why the makers of Herbal Virility are limiting its supply to newspaper and magazine readers only. Herbal Virility is amazing. Men who try it can’t seem to get enough. But to really understand why, you have to try it for yourself. That’s why the makers of Herbal Virility asked us to “spread the word” by offering our readers a full-month supply, at a superdiscounted, “readers only” price.

Prostate cancer hits one in every six men. Adam Garone, the founder of Movember, is trying to do something about that.
You might be noticing a larger-than-usual number of men growing mustaches this month. Welcome to Movember, the annual campaign for raising awareness and funds for prostate and other male cancers. pleas of “more milk [propofal]” by Michael Jackson (apparently devoid of personal responsibility), Dr. Conrad Murray was found guilty of involuntary homicide because he was supposed to act as the ultimate stop gap for the harmful behaviors of his patients. Meanwhile, in our recent economic upheaval created by a burst mortgage and real estate bubble, while many wannabe home owners thirsted for homes they couldn’t
afford, mortgage bankers were supposed to be the ones to say no. Wall Street traders were supposed to say there was no market for subpar mortgages and ratings agencies were supposed to condemn toxic products. They did the opposite. So why aren’t they sent to jail for involuntary fiscal malfeasance? DAVID DIBELLO, VIA E-MAIL

I don’t know if Herman Cain is my top choice for president; I need to know more about his character. JOE MUST GO: PATERNO’S FUTURE IN JEOPARDY
WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 9, 2011
Penn State coach feeling heat as Sandusky scandal rages University cancels scheduled news conference Report claims Paterno will be fired Students rally GETTY IMAGES
Joe Paterno weaves his way through a crowd of Penn State students yesterday at his State College home.
Under pressure The Patriot-News, in Harrisburg, published a full, front-page editorial in Tuesday’s edition: In it, the editorial board stated, “There are the obligations we all have to uphold the law. There are then the obligations we all have to do what is right.” “As for Joe Paterno, the face of Penn State and the man who has pushed for excellence on the football field and for the entire university, this must be his last season. His contract should not be extended.”
Penn State students stood outside Joe Paterno’s home and shouted, “We love JoePa.” But will the support of a few diehards be enough to save the coach’s job? It’s looking more and more like it won’t. Pressure continued to mount yesterday for Paterno to retire as head football coach amid a sex scandal involving former top assistant Jerry Sandusky. The 84-year-old Paterno — an icon in central Pennsylvania — missed his first chance to publicly address questions regarding the scandal when a scheduled news conference was abruptly canceled by university officials. But that didn’t stop a media horde from swarming Paterno on his way to practice. “I know you guys have a lot of questions. We’ll try to do it as soon as we can,” Paterno said. The New York Times reported that Paterno’s 45year tenure as Penn State coach could end in days or weeks, citing people briefed on conversations among top officials. Some members of the board of trustees are pushing for an independent investigation before making any decisions, a source told Reuters. His son, Scott, said that his father hasn’t been asked to step down at this time. In fact, he expects to see him on the sideline this Saturday, when Penn State hosts Nebraska. REUTERS/METRO

ANGELO CATALDI THE VOICE OF THE PHILLY SPORTS FAN
GOODBYE TO THE POPE OF HAPPY VALLEY The sad part about Joe Paterno’s imminent exit after 46 years as coach at Penn State is not just that it happened under such horrific circumstances. It is that so many people worshipped a hero not worthy of adulation.
Castillo killing the ‘Dream’ Andy Reid’s winter brainstorm has become a tsunami. The idea of turning a 16-year NFL offensive assistant into the defensive coordinator, absurd at the time, is a full-blown disaster now. Juan Castillo is ruining this football season. The latest indignity unfolded on Monday, when the Eagles’ defense turned a 24-17 lead into a 30-24 defeat. Castillo’s underachievers have blown four, fourth-quarter leads, more than any other NFL team. The playoffs are nothing more than a

pipe dream now. Great coaches are supposed to make their players better. Castillo has done the opposite. Nnamdi Asomugha was the biggest free-agent signing of the offseason, an elite, shutdown corner — until Castillo got his hands on him. Dominique RodgersCromartie has become the saddest case of all. An elite cornerback last season, DRC appears dazed and confused on almost every play. He’s one step behind most of the time and he’s clearly playing out of position. Castillo spouts a mantra of hard work, but nothing is working. And nothing will work until Reid ends this ridiculous experiment.
he rules have always been different for Paterno. He hadn’t won a championship for 25 years — a quarter century — and still he was regarded as the greatest of coaches. As the list of criminal charges against his players grew, he somehow remained the ideal for moral behavior. And when he snapped at question after question, it was never seen for what it really was, bullying. Of course, we know the truth about Joe Paterno. He protected the reputation of a longtime friend and assistant, Jerry Sandusky — and of his own program — while risking the well-being of innocent, defenseless children. Paterno will face no criminal charges because he reported the one incident of sex abuse he was aware of directly, but he is already guilty in the court of public opinion. Paterno, the moral conscience of college sports, the Pope of Happy Valley, did the unthinkable. He looked the other way. When extraordinary action was required, Paterno did nothing. How could he? How could a man who had made such a commitment to young people for so long fail them when they needed him most? No one will ever really know the answer because the case will be tied up in court for many years — first, the criminal charges against Sandusky and his enablers at Penn
Thome, back to the future An old friend came back to town. You may remember him. Jim Thome, the man who lifted the Phillies into the stratosphere eight years ago, is back. Of course, he isn’t the same player he was when the Phils wrote him a huge check to commemorate the opening of Citizens Bank Park. A new era of big spending and even bigger winning was upon us, and the poster boy for those first few years was the affable country boy with the majestic home-run swing. Thome’s price tag was

State, and then the civil cases against everyone close to the case, including Paterno. It’s hard to imagine that Paterno will ever tell his side of the story, if there is one to tell. All we can say for sure is that he fought to the end, either because he’s still in denial that he did anything wrong or because his survival instinct is that powerful. His last public comment was a statement claiming shock at Sandusky’s indictment — shock despite a nine-year investigation and Grand Jury probe that included Paterno's testimony. To the public, there was no real shock over an assistant we hardly even knew, nor over the Penn State bureaucrats who allegedly perjured themselves to protect Sandusky, themselves or their university. Those people are all mortals. None of them are named Joe Paterno. In the end, the record will show that Joe Paterno was really not much different than all the others stomping the sidelines over the past 46 years, a flawed man who was just more talented at convincing us he was better than everybody else. Paterno will leave coaching with an indelible stain on his record and in our memories. – Angelo Cataldi is host of 610 WIP’s Morning Show, which airs weekdays 5:30 a.m. to 10 a.m. Metro does not endorse the opinions of the author, or any opinions expressed on its pages. just $1.25 million this time, not $85 million. And he’s 41, not 33. But one thing hasn’t changed. Charlie Manuel was still thrilled to have a player who is more like a son to him than merely a bat off the bench. Manuel is one of the worst strategists in the game. He appears befuddled every time he steps in front of a microphone. But this is the kind of story that has won him a legion of fans, and a World Series. No one is better at building a relationship with his players. When Thome was here the first time, he won a lot of games, but no title. This time, he has some unfinished business. He needs to win it — for a city that still admires him.
More idle thoughts from Cataldi ... 1
Where is the statue for Philly’s real hero? Joe Frazier passed away Monday night, the victim of liver cancer. He embodied the spirit of Philadelphia as much as any athlete, with his toughness, his quirkiness and his smile. If we’ve got a statue for a fictional hero like Rocky, don’t we need one for a real hero like Joe Frazier?

No championships, but plenty of love. The Eagles did something special during Monday night’s game. They honored Buddy Ryan and his teams of the late 1980s. Seth Joyner, Keith Byars, Keith Jackson and lots of the other beloved players from those teams were back. The only thing those Eagles won was the love of the fans. Sometimes, that’s enough.

For Pete’s sake. For a guy who went totally unnoticed for three seasons as the Phillies’ bench coach, Pete Mackanin has suddenly become a hot commodity on the managing market. His predecessor, Jimy Williams, hasn’t worked since the 2008 parade — and the 60-year-old Mackanin is a top managing prospect. Go figure.

Saint Joe’s ready to bring thrill back to Hawk Hill Hawks look to build off some late-season momentum Martelli needs 10 wins to become school’s all-time leader Season begins this weekend GETTY IMAGES
Don’t pay attention to the overall record. Just look at the final 11 games. That’s when everyone witnessed the maturity and growth of a young Saint Joseph’s team. The Hawks finished 1122 last year with the youngest team in coach Phil Martelli’s 16 seasons. But they won six of their last 11 and came within three points of a spot in the Atlantic 10 title game. Those freshmen who went through the growing pains — guard Langston Galloway, and forwards Ronald Roberts, C.J. Aiken and Daryus Quarles — came back to Hawk Hill much more experienced as sophomores. They’ll be joined by highly touted freshman guard Chris Wilson, who averaged 18.4 points and 5.7 assists per game as a high school senior. Combine everything and the Hawks feel really good about the 2011-12 season, which begins Friday at

He’s on pace to become the 48th Saint Joseph’s player to reach the 1,000-point mark. But Jones is sick of losing games, and he’s anxious to alter that trend. “Definitely,” Jones said. “There’s more fire in our belly. I feel like we’ve worked harder this year than we did last year.”

Boxing fans, legends recall ‘Smokin’ Joe’ after his death Mayweather offers to fund funeral Tributes adorn former gym on North Broad Street RIKARD LARMA/METRO
How much was Joe Frazier respected in the boxing world? So much that one current fighter has offered to pay for his funeral. Unbeaten world welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. tweeted the following message, “My condolences go out to the family of the late great Joe Frazier. #TheMoneyTeam will pay for his Funeral services.” Frazier, a Philly resident who died Monday night of liver cancer, had struggled financially after his boxing career ended. In later years, he lived alone in an apartment above the gym he ran on North Broad Street. That gym, now a furniture store, was adorned yesterday with fan tributes. Another legendary area boxer, Bernard Hopkins, was one of the first to pay his respects. “Joe is a person who will never be imitated or emulated,” Hopkins said. “His legacy in boxing will never be duplicated, especially

Frazier won the first bout in 1971— called the “Fight of the Century” — and Ali took the next two. “The world has lost a great champion,” Ali said in a statement. “I will always remember Joe with respect and admiration. My sympathy goes out to his family and loved ones.” METRO

Joe Frazier was an inspiration to boxers, like Bernard Hopkins (above). Here are some memorable fights in Frazier’s career.
March 8, 1971 Frazier becomes first boxer to beat Muhammad Ali in “Fight of the Century.” Oct. 1, 1975 Frazier falls to Ali in 15 rounds in legendary “Thrilla in Manilla.” Jan. 22, 1973 One of only four losses for Frazier, who was knocked down six times by George Foreman and led to the call, “Down goes Frazier.” Foreman said, “Joe Frazier would come out smoking. If you hit him, he liked it. If you knocked him down, you only made him mad.”

TIPS FROM GAFFNEY:

S
ure, you’ve cooked for three days straight, but no selfrespecting holiday table is complete without a centerpiece. “I’ve seen rooms with the best linens
and crystals, but they’re not alive until you drop the flowers on the table,” says Michael Gaffney, founder of the New York School of Flower Design. (He’s responsible for the
gorgeous arrangements in movies such as “Black Swan.”) “I often wonder why, and I think it’s because it adds another element to the room. Instead of metals and linens and
materials, it adds life.” And let’s face it — your guests are going to need some resuscitation from the food coma that’s about to go down. So to give our dinner tables a little more

together once a month in the historic West Laurel Hill Cemetery in Bala Cynwyd. The next meeting is Nov. 17. West Laurel Hill Cemetery, which dates back to 1869, is a popular neighborhood spot for strolling, jogging and dog-walking. It’s also an arboretum and sculpture garden.
