Boston 2050: What the future will bring The T could tell you when you’re becoming ill Vertical farms might take root in buildings Boston’s image as a college town could fade SIEMENS
Students looking to get a Boston education could without ever visiting the Hub. Schools like Northeastern and Boston University are looking to expand globally and offer courses in regional campuses in other cities and countries. Professors will be flown to those cities to teach every few weeks. “There are new and ... exciting visions for education at Boston University in the year 2050,” BU President Robert Brown wrote of the school’s global strategy. “We could, by then, be a multicampus institution.”

‘The Hood’ has eye on city change ‘Occupy The Hood’ hosts town hall meeting tonight Group has already held marches, started a food drive Occupy Boston members will attend in solidarity
Metro Magic donations will benefit Toys for Tots.
Keep making the magic happen It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas here at Metro’s Congress Street office. Thanks to dozens of gifts sent from generous Metro readers, our once generic-looking lobby is now starting to fill up with classic board games, frilly dress-up outfits and colorful art supplies. Just a few weeks into our Metro Magic toy drive, the outpouring of gifts from donors across Greater Boston has us optimistic that we will be able to give hundreds of the Hub’s needy children the holiday season
they deserve. The Home for Little Wanderers and Greater Boston Toys for Tots, the two local organizations that will directly benefit from Metro Magic donations, are counting on you to continue to give so generously. We are regularly updating our wish list, available by clicking on the Metro Magic logo at www.metro. us, so you can personally choose the perfect toy you think will brighten a local child’s holiday. With one easy click of your mouse, the gift will be sent directly to Metro and then distributed to The Home for Little Wanderers or Toys for Tots. It really couldn’t be any easier, so make today the day you help bring a little holiday magic into a needy child’s life. METRO
2: One click on the logo will take you to a “Wish List” we have set up via a secure link on ToysRUs.com. Once there, you can see all the toys we’ve already requested with more added daily. Simply select the toys you want and purchase them. That’s it! Selecting only the toys on our wish list ensures that all the gifts will be shipped to our offices and then picked up by Toys for Tots. If you donate, e-mail us at charity@metro.us letting us know what you gave and we’ll shout out a “thank you” in the paper!

Activist groups already occupy Boston’s urban neighborhoods; they just never had a single platform to conjoin the multitude of ongoing efforts. In a town hall-style forum tonight, Occupy The Hood Boston will make that connection. An offshoot of the Occupy movements nationwide, without the tents, the meeting will focus on social injustices in Roxbury, Mattapan, Dorchester and surrounding areas and form teams concentrated on battling back against violence, drugs and the housing crisis. It is the second time the group will hold a formal meeting, but already they have hosted marches and protests around the city. “It’s a big funnel,” said Roxbury activist Jamal Crawford. “[OTHB] is funneling all the broader stuff and getting it through a spigot to get people to various focus points.” Crawford said rather than “reinvent the wheel,”

OTHB “ushers and diverts” those interested in the movement to programs already established. The event tonight will feature updates from representatives of Occupy Boston, who announced early on their solidarity with the urban group. Group organizer Jesse Winfrey, a Roxbury native, said he is impressed with the amount of outreach work OTHB has done since its inception
three weeks ago. “I hope we can continue to show that the community has a voice and be inclusive in the process to open it up to everybody,” he said. “This event is a good way [to do that].” Their latest efforts include conjuring up a list of local food pantries to send donations to through a group-sponsored food drive. Cops looking for man who told boys at Downtown Crossing he was an officer, offered to give them a ride Police are asking for the public’s help to identify a man who they say tried to abduct three teens inside a Downtown Crossing store this weekend. A surveillance photo of the man was released by police yesterday. The man approached the teenage boys Saturday afternoon inside the Macy’s and told them he was a police officer. “I am a cop and I have a car upstairs. I’ll give you a ride home,” the man said, according to police. The teens asked the man to prove he was a cop by showing his badge. When he refused to show his badge the teens fled

Mayor goes to DC to back stricter gun laws BOSTON. A band of mayors fighting for gun control standards is heading to Washington, D.C., tomorrow to talk to legislators about cleaning up the process for purchasing firearms. Following a campaign kicked off in September by Mayor Thomas Menino and NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg, the “Mayors Against Illegal Guns” group is calling for stricter background-check procedures. More than 50 survivors of gun violence will join the group to push Congress into keeping people with violent pasts on a national database so they can’t purchase firearms. Italy’s president appointed former European Commissioner Mario Monti on Sunday to head a new government charged with implementing urgent reforms to end a crisis that has endangered the whole euro zone. After a frenetic weekend during which parliament passed the reforms and Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi stepped down to the jeers of hostile crowds, President Giorgio Napolitano asked Monti to form a government, expected to be composed largely of technocrats. The respected economist, made a life Senator last week, said he would work urgently to form a

government and is likely to name about 12 ministers within days. “I intend to fulfil this task with a great sense of responsibility in the service of our country. In a moment of particular difficulty for Italy, in a turbulent situa-
tion for Europe and the world, the country needs to meet the challenge,” Monti said after his nomination. “We owe it to our children to offer them a future with dignity and hope,” he added. A process that normally takes several days or weeks was completed over the weekend as Napolitano raced to restore market confidence, which collapsed disastrously last week. After nominating Monti, the president said that Italy must make an extraordinary effort to overcome the crisis and restore the trust of both investors and European institutions.

2012 elections: gop presidential race
For GOP, Romney No. 1
SCOTT OLSON/GETTY IMAGES
Love him or hate him, the lack of better candidates has placed Mitt at the top of the heap Something to be said for consistency: No gaffes Mitt Romney has a growing lead in the race for the 2012 Republican presidential nomination, and almost half of the party’s voters expect him to be the nominee, according to a Reuters/Ipsos poll. Twenty-eight percent of Republicans backed the former Massachusetts governor, giving him a lead of eight percentage points over his nearest challenger Herman Cain in the poll, taken Nov. 10-11. Romney was five percentage points ahead in a survey Nov. 7-8. Newt Gingrich, the U.S. House of Representatives speaker in the mid-1990s, solidified a recent rise among conservatives seeking an alternative to the more moderate Romney, coming in third place in the current poll with 16 percent. Gingrich, who is seen as having performed well in recent debates, was viewed as the second-most “presidential” of the Republican hopefuls, according to the poll. Whether or not they support him, almost half of the Republicans surveyed expect Romney to
Debate in brief SOUTH CAROLINA. In a diverse dialogue, the eight Republicans outlined the approaches they would take to diplomacy if elected head of state. Here are the five most notable exchanges. REUTERS
He’s got the look When judged on his personal qualities, Romney was rated strongly by Republicans. become the nominee to oppose President Barack Obama, a Democrat, in the November 2012 election. Romney, who also ran for president in 2008, has been in first or second place in polls for months and enjoys by far the most campaign funds of the Republican field. But some in his party see him as too liberal, and he has so far failed to significantly boost his level of support in polls. The latest Reuters/Ipsos poll, however, shows he is benefiting from missteps by his rivals.

Torture Is torture acceptable under any circumstances?
1
Herman Cain said he opposed torture but would “trust the judgment of our military leaders.” Michele Bachmann said that she too “would be willing to use water boarding,” which she called “very effective.” Ron Paul disavowed water boarding and torture, which he called “immoral,” as did Jon Huntsman, who argued that torture lowers America’s “standing.”
Assassination Is it OK for the U.S. government to assassinate Americans linked to terror groups?
2
Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich defended the “targeted killing” of Anwar al-Awlaki, a U.S. citizen thought to be part of alQaeda. Romney said he “absolutely” supported the assassination. Gingrich argued al-Awlaki was “found guilty under review.” Paul dissented: “I don’t think we should give up so easily on our rule of law.”
Arab Spring Pessimistic outlook on the Arab Spring
3
Cain suggested “all of the revolutions that are going on” have been “mishandled” by the Obama administration, and “as a result, they have gotten totally out of hand.” Gingrich, meanwhile, worried that the Arab Spring “may become an anti-Christian Spring.”
Republican presidential candidate Rick Perry’s disastrous debate performance last week has hurt his campaign, but may not be fatal, a Reuters/Ipsos poll found. After watching a video of the Texas governor stumbling while trying to name three government agencies he would eliminate if elected, 48 percent of registered Republicans thought less favorably of him, the poll found.
Foreign aid Should we continue billions in foreign aid for Pakistan?
A plurality of 52% voters — 52 percent — felt that Perry should stay in the race despite his debate performances. But while 31 percent of Republicans believed Perry should drop out of the race, many more disagreed. Perry’s campaign went into damage control overdrive on Thursday, putting the governor front and center on news shows. REUTERS

Rick Perry suggested that as president he would eliminate all foreign aid. Bachmann sharply disagreed, saying that Pakistan is a special case because it’s a nuclear power. And Rick Santorum made a similar point: “We can’t be indecisive about whether Pakistan is our friend. They must be our friend, and we must engage them as friends.”
“I think it’s time to come home,” Huntsman said. “I say this nation has achieved its key objectives in Afghanistan: We had free elections in 2004, we uprooted the Taliban, we have dismantled al-Qaeda, and we killed Osama bin Laden.” He went on: “This nation’s future is how prepared we are to meet the 21st century’s competitive challenges.”

‘Raising Hope’ How a Fox comedy gets away with such bold backstory choices so late in the game Creator talks big decisions The writers of “Raising Hope” come up with such reckless backstories (mildmannered main character Jimmy Chance’s angry goth phase, his father’s decision to fake a kidnapping to go live in a Winnebago with a stranger, etc.) it almost seems as though they’re constantly thinking the show is about to be canceled. But creator and executive producer Greg Garcia says the moment that they found out they were renewed for a second season was actually when they started taking these wild liberties. “If anything,” says Garcia, “it was more like, ‘Hey, we’re green lit for a second season. Looking like ‘Six Million’ bucks Tomorrow night’s episode follows the show’s newfound tradition of unexpected guest stars adding to the backstory, as the Chance family gets a lastminute visit from Jimmy’s wealthy paternal grandparents — played by none other than “The Six Million Dollar Man” and Mrs. Partridge (aka Lee Majors and Shirley Jones, respectively).

Meanwhile, Jimmy still lives at home with his senile great-grandmother and his parents, who are only about 15 years older than he is. But Garcia and company took it a few steps further. “I think just toward the end of the season, we — the writers and I — sat down and thought about what would be a good season ender,” he says, “then we came up with all those peo-

‘Immortals’ conquers the weekend with a solid $32M opening Fanboys returned to the movies in large numbers this weekend, giving “Immortals” a strong $32 million opening domestically. That’s $7 million more than Relativity Media had predicted for its R-rated swords-and-sandals epic, which is No. 1 at the weekend box office. Sony’s Adam Sandler comedy, “Jack and Jill,” meanwhile, grossed an estimated $26 million. While that’s on the high end of the studio’s low expectations for the PG-rated movie, it does not compare well to the numbers most Adam Sandler films generate in opening weekend. Still, it was enough to put “Jack and Jill” at No. 2 for the weekend, just ahead of DreamWorks Animation’s “Puss in Boots.” That movie, in its third weekend of release, grossed an estimated $25.5 million. The director of ‘Immortals’ doesn’t worship the gods ‘They were nasty f—ups,’ says Tarsem Singh Why he wanted to kill off the stars of Greek mythology
Are the gods really great? “Greek mythology is very soap opera-y. Very!” says Singh. “And for most people, they don’t see it as that. They’re just, ‘No, no, no! Zeus was this mighty guy, a voice of reason.’ The guy who got pissed off at everybody else and kept killing the wrong people? And then slept with so-and-so’s daughter, so-and-so’s son and everything? Then Poseidon coming down and impregnating people through water? It’s just like, no they were nasty f— ups.”
V
Singh directs “Immortals,” in theaters now.
isionary Indian director Tarsem Singh is known for his bold visuals — as seen in his previous films “The Cell” and “The Fall” — so a fair amount of spectacle is to be expected for his take on Greek mythology, “Immortals.” But the boldest visuals might be the gods themselves, portrayed here as fit, young specimens instead of the usual bearded old men. It’s an approach Singh knew would be controversial — though he admits he wasn’t prepared for just how much blowback he’d get. When Metro caught up with the

Your Greek gods are a lot more fit in this movie than we’re used to seeing.
“Immortals” is an action flick, and I decided it wasn’t going to be CGI flying and fighting and pointing fingers and lightning coming out from people’s fingers. Once I decided I wasn’t going to go there, I needed physically fit specimens. So I just said OK, why would I go young with them? And I started to look for reasons, and the reason just being that if you wanted to live forever, nobody wants to look old and miserable and be carrying a catheter around in later-on years. What did you think of the most recent depiction of the gods in “Clash of the Titans”?

just thinking that it had to come out before that. I said I had no interest in competing with a juggernaut that has three times my budget. If they want to turn something like that out, that’s fine. But I don’t know how to do gods turning cauldrons and going, “What are the humans up to?” That’s so dated. You also suggest in your film that these gods aren’t necessarily all that immortal after all.
In the end, I wanted all gods dead. They’re from a dead religion, but people were still like, “No! You can’t kill off this one!” And I’m like, “Oh my God, people believe in this?” Just the concept of God I find boring, that everyone thinks of these beneficial bearded guys up there that are doing this nasty stuff. n the digital age, where most listeners purchase single songs online for $1.29, does it really make sense to rerecord your hits and package them with new songs? If you’re Boyz II Men, it’s not just about trying to entice people to buy your entire album at the local retail outlet, says singer Nathan Morris. “When you’re signed to a major record label, they sign you for a certain time. And after it’s passed, you’re allowed to rerecord songs,” he explains. “One of the reasons we thought it

would be cool is that now we can re-record our songs, and we can physically own the masters ourselves, and we can license
them to whoever we want to license them to — versus Universal having all the power and control over our songs.” Both the new songs and the newer versions of the hits on the group’s recently released “Twenty” are in keeping with the spirit of the originals that made them one of the most successful R&B groups ever. And yes, their new album is called “Twenty” because they’ve been together for two decades. Morris says this milestone anniversary was very much present in their minds when they went into the studio.
“It was cool. The fact that we were able to perform all of these songs with the original producers is a good thing,” he says. “It wasn’t tedious at all. We perform these songs a lot onstage — and the fact is that we did those songs 20 years ago, and performing them now is different because now we have a whole different outlook on the songs.”

tution, says Bayer, who has studied faculty misconduct for more than two decades. “For them, the best interest of the university is to not let the information get out, even if it’s in violation of the law. The structural constraints in higher education make it extremely difficult for a faculty member to
bring their complaints publicly. In 1999, Bayer and Proper focused on undergraduate education in “Faculty Misconduct in College Teaching. But a sequel was in the works almost from the beginning. Their latest effort focuses on graduate-level education at major research institutions. “Graduate education is where faculty have more intimate, one-on-one relationships with students — so
there’s much more opportunity to take advantage of students, says Bayer. “One of the major failures is that in most programs there are no courses that teach ethical responsibilities. So we leave it to individual faculty members to demonstrate through their behavior what the ethics should be. Often, students see unethical behavior and they think it’s OK for them to do it. BRUCE WALSH

What you need to know about applying to college
DIGITAL VISION
Whether you’re a student or are preparing to send a child off, you need to know the process Tips to get you started and navigate the financial aid process As application deadlines loom ahead, students across the country are scrambling to better understand the college admissions process. Steve Cohen is here to help. The co-author of “Getting In: The Zinch Guide to College Admissions and Financial Aid in the Digital Age,” Cohen has studied college admissions extensively over the last decade, and has taught at NYU and Fordham University. How many schools should a student apply to?
You should think about three different categories: “reach,” “possible” and “safety” schools. The important thing is that you should be happy going to any of them. The number I usually recommend is three in each category. Should you apply to schools you know you can’t afford?
Here’s the first thing to keep in mind: It costs less — in many cases — to go to an elite institution than to go to a state college. The sticker price may be off the charts, but the actual out-of-
pocket that a kid and parent will pay is often significantly less. Wealthier schools have more money to give away in financial aid. And many elite institutions have made a commitment not to saddle the student with debt. They’re more likely to give aid in the form of grants and scholarships. But you don’t get money unless you ask for it. In most cases, it doesn’t hurt to ask. BRUCE WALSH
Other paths What about students who know they need to attend a community college first? It’s important to remember that you still have options. It doesn’t necessarily have to be in your hometown. The tuition is usually statebased. It may be tied directly to a smaller community, but even if you’re paying out-of-state tuition at a community college, it is far, far less expensive than going to a four-year college.
When might it hurt to ask?
It’s a daunting process, but applying to a number of schools means you’ll have choices come decision time.
bruce.walsh@metro.us
“Colleges fall into one of two categories. You can easily find it on their website. ‘Need-blind’ means admissions and financial aid are totally separate. The other is ‘need-aware,’ which means they might make decisions in part based on if you are asking for financial aid.”

Career advice from the ‘Headhuntress’
Insider tip Don’t get too used to getting advice from a recruiter. Fear of lawsuits prevent them from offering feedback after an interview. “The parting line is that they’re moving forward with other candidates. If they said, ‘We didn’t think you were energetic enough,’ if it’s something you can prove you can do or could learn, you could bring a lawsuit.”

A meeting with Wendy Doulton isn’t easy to come by. Don’t have the résumé to land that interview? She’s also the founder of coaching service Katalyst Career Group, but be warned: She won’t hold back when your skirt suit is too tight, and she doesn’t like being bored. Tonight, however, you can get a sneak peek of what Doulton’s looking for in a Fortune 500 executive when her Bravo special, “The Headhuntress,” premieres. While she’s the perfect reality star — successful, intense and quick with sharp, British-accented oneliners — she was more than gracious when we asked her to share some of her core career advice. Be positive The poor job market makes headlines, but Doulton hasn’t seen a dip in business. “I’m recruiting for companies all the time. Attitude is everything — if you want to sit around and say, ‘There are no jobs out there,’ you’ll be right. People want to hire people they like, who are positive and energetic. In 2010, of the 69 percent of adult smokers surveyed who wanted to quit, only 6.2 percent of the more than half who tried succeeded, according to research released Thursday by the CDC.
Still smoking? Here’s how to quit for good According to the American Cancer Society, tobacco use is the single largest preventable cause of disease and premature death in the U.S., yet more than 46 million Americans still smoke. The ACS’s 36th Great American Smokeout, taking place this Thursday, is a national movement encouraging smokers to stop. “The battle has been

won in awareness of the dangers,” says Dr. Thomas J. Glynn, M.A., M.S., Ph.D., the ACS’s director of cancer science, trends and international cancer control. “But most people think that’s only [with regards to] lung cancer. There’s more tobacco-caused heart disease than lung cancer. It also contributes to many other cancers, from esophageal to colorectal.” And people still smoke, because tobacco's nicotine is powerfully addicting — though it’s not as harmful when independent of cigarettes, which is why nicotine patches and gums are used to quit smoking. “It’s not easy to quit,” says Glynn. “It takes the majority of people several attempts before they stop for good.” LINDA CLARKE

am Dr. Mark Melrose, and my specialty is emergency medicine. An emergency physician is a jack-of-all-trades who can diagnose and initially treat almost any unanticipated illness or injury. We answer questions for people: “Is my chest pain a heart attack?” “Does my child have a strep infection?” “Do I need stitches for this cut?” Here in Metro, I will be available to answer your medical questions; shoot me an e-mail at askdrmark@metro.us. To
kick things off, since I recently started caring for patients in my own urgent care medical office, many of my friends and patients who know me as an ER doctor have asked, “What is urgent care, anyway?” Urgent care centers are walk-in practices that are usually open seven days a week, with extended hours during evenings and weekends when doctors’ offices are closed. When you have an unanticipated illness, injury or health care need that is beyond the scope or availability of a doctor’s office (stitches, X-rays, UTIs, IV fluids for a stomach virus, colds, the flu, etc.), urgent care medical practices offer convenient, customeroriented service. Unlike an ER, you don’t have to compete for care with patients

he physicians are usually specialists in emergency medicine, but may include family practitioners or internists. Patients may be referred to a specialist if they need a consultation, or back to a primary care doctor for ongoing care. Visits are often covered by insurance; if you’re paying cash, they start at about $150 for a basic evaluation
and treatment. Charges are menu-driven for additional tests and procedures. All in all, they add up to only 2030 percent of a visit to the ER. The time saved by not waiting in the ER or for a “try to fit you in” doctor appointment is well worth any out-of-pocket expense. — Mark Melrose, DO, is a board-certified physician and partner at Urgent Care Manhattan. Why Occupy? Debate rages I Occupy because of the wars. I am here because of the prison-industrial complex. I am here because our economy is in decline for the bottom 99 percent. I am here because our federal government is corrupt to the core. I am here because our mainstream media is owned and operated by the same corporate powers that have bought our government. Our government and economic systems have failed us. It is time to reshuffle the stacked deck and fix it so government of the people,
I’m very concerned about how divided our country is right now. Some in the Occupy movement have said that they want a “fairer distribution of wealth.” But what does that mean? You take money from people who’ve earned it and give it to others who haven’t? It’s better to make money the old-fashioned way by working hard than force the rich to give you a handout. But the divider-in-chief would rather stir up dissension and class hatred. ROGER KELLER, WEYMOUTH

Reasserting dominance
Patriots blow out Jets as they take firm control of the AFC East Brady superb, finds tight end Gronkowski for two touchdowns No breathing room for Sanchez, who is sacked five times, picked off twice GETTY IMAGES
Good day, bad day
37 PATRIOTS (6-3)
16 JETS (5-4)
What went wrong ...
1
Safety dance — After staking themselves to a 6-0 lead on two Stephen Gostkowski field goals, Tom Brady and the Pats were backed up in their own end. Brady, under heavy pressure in the end zone, threw the ball into the turf and was called for intentional grounding and a safety. The Jets marched for a TD on the ensuing possession.
Chicago It is time to start taking the Bears very seriously. Jay Cutler, Matt Forte and a dominating defense won their fourth straight over Detroit yesterday. After scuffling to a 2-3 start, the Bears now look to be a playoff contender.
2 Rob Gronkowski had two touchdown catches — and another called back by a penalty — in the Patriots’ win over the Jets.
What went right for the Pats ...
1 Indianapolis OK, so we could probably have done this for the last 10 weeks in a row. Somehow though, it actually got worse for the Colts this week. They lost 17-3 to the previously 2-6 Jaguars and after Miami and St. Louis both won, they now have a twogame hold on last.
No end in sight — Rob Gronkowski is quickly establishing himself as the best offensive tight end in the NFL. He caught two touchdown passes in the game, bringing his season total to eight. He was a terror for the Jets’ secondary all night — especially in the red zone.
2
Tip drill — Just a few plays after the touchdown that wasn’t by Gronkowski, Mark Sanchez threw a pass that was tipped by the receiver coming out of the backfield and intercepted by Rob Ninkovich. The Patriots methodically marched the ball down the field, including a third-down QB sneak by Tom Brady, before completing a third-down TD pass to Gronkowski. This one didn’t need a review and made the score 23-9.
3
Ninko-who? — Ninkovich didn’t just have the big interception to set up Gronkowski’s second touchdown catch, he also had a touchdown of his own. With the Jets down two touchdowns in the fourth quarter, Ninkovich picked off Sanchez deep in Jets territory and waltzed into the end zone to close out any chance of the Jets coming back. He had two career interceptions before last night.
Secondary hit by injury Safeties are often known for making hard hits. The Patriots secondary though seems to keep taking hits. Prior to last night’s game, safety Patrick Chung was ruled out with a right foot injury after being limited in practice all week. During the game, it kept getting worse.
WWW.METRO.US/SPORTS STAY WITH METRO FOR EXCLUSIVE ONLINE EXTRAS
Starting cornerback Devin McCourty was injured in the first quarter. Then, James Ihedigbo, Chung’s opposite at safety,
was injured and replaced by the just-signed Ross Ventrone. Ihedigbo did return. Despite playing with three backups out of the four players in the secondary, the Patriots actually improved on their muchmaligned pass defense. METRO
Gronked out — The Pats appeared to have a huge touchdown after Brady showed inhuman elusiveness and found Rob Gronkowski in the end zone. The score would’ve put them up 20-9 in the third. Instead, Gronkowski had stepped out of bounds and the score was overturned. They settled for a field goal.
3
What’s the rush — To say the Patriots had no running game would be an understatement. They had 36 yards rushing at the end of the third quarter and their leading rusher was Danny Woodhead with 13 yards. METRO

Next for the Pats New England hosts the Chiefs this Monday (8:30 p.m., ESPN).

The Chiefs are 4-5, coming off a terrible loss to Tim Tebow and the Broncos. He completed two passes and the Chiefs still lost the game, 17-10.

Sox in market for a new closer
There are plenty of known quantities — asking for big money — on the free agent market, but there’s also a big question mark from Japan.
Fire up the hot stove Free agency officially started this week and teams are already talking deals You know the Yankees will be shopping for a pitcher But will the Sox bring back their longtime DH? The free agency market this year is topped by the greatest player of the last 20 years. He’ll likely stay in
1
St. Louis though. Metro looks at five intriguing free agents, including a couple that could join Boston:
Albert Pujols — Pujols has been the biggest free agent all year and remains so after winning his second World Series title. Pujols enters free agency in a year
when many of the big markets don’t have openings at first base. It’s difficult to imagine the Cardinals not retaining him even if it takes $25 million per year.
2
Jose Reyes — Reyes’ free agency has been a day that many Met fans have dreaded. Reyes may not get Carl Crawford’s $140 million, but figure on at least $100 million. With the Mets
appearing to cut payroll to the $110-115 million range, this does not bode well for their fans. The Marlins have already shown interest, but the Giants and even Nationals could be players.
3
pitched 250 innings is hard to come by. Wilson might not be a Yankee or a Red Sox, but he can pitch against them — going 4-1 with a 1.56 ERA in nine starts.
C.J. Wilson — Despite his poor postseason, someone will pay for Wilson’s services and possibly even offer $100 million. A 16game winner that has
4
David Ortiz — Ortiz won’t be going to the Yankees. Not even if they want to tweak the Red Sox. The Yankees are keeping that spot open for a bunch of their older players and rookie Jesus Montero. Since that’s all Ortiz can do at this point, he is limited. No National League team will even consider signing him. And his comments in the wake of Theo Epstein and Terry Francona’s exits about leaving Boston seem to be a ploy to create a marketplace. Ortiz is believed to be seeking a three-year deal, which might be too long for any team. If he does not return to the Red Sox, the other three AL East teams besides the Yankees might have an opening and interest. The Twins could also be interested if Michael Cuddyer ends up leaving.
5
Yu Darvish — If he decides to leave the Nippon Ham Fighters, teams will have to pay a posting fee. The Yanks and Sox are both reportedly interested.

When Jonathan Papelbon signed with the Phillies it opened up a spot in the back of the Red Sox bullpen for the first time since 2005. The in-house option to replace Papelbon would be Daniel Bard. However, Bard didn’t instill much confidence down the stretch in 2011. “I think Daniel would embrace more responsibility," new Sox general manager Ben Cherington said. "He’s proven he’s an elite major league pitcher ... and he’s ready for more responsibility.” Another option could be Ryan Madson, who the Phillies eschewed to sign Papelbon. METRO

Sox interview Lamont, set Thanksgiving date Boston GM narrows managerial search to five candidates Meets with Tigers first-base coach for eight hours Epstein addresses beer drinking
Cherington has set a target hire date for new skipper.
Well, Red Sox Nation might have something else to be thankful for while its passing the stuffing this Thanksgiving. According to reports, that’s the target date the club plans to have a new manager in place by. They have narrowed the list to five candidates: Pete Mackanin, Dale Sveum, Sandy Alomar, Jr., Torey Lovullo and Gene Lamont. Lamont, the third-base coach for Detroit, reportedly spent eight hours with Red Sox GM Ben Cherington this past weekend at Fenway Park. Lamont has worked in the baseball business for almost 47 years.
NowIgetthepicture.com
“He’s a solid guy, a really good baseball guy with a good sense of humor,” Cherington recently told ESPNBoston. “I feel like I know him a lot better now than I did eight hours ago and I’m glad we brought him in.” Red Sox ownership and management will sit down this week at the GM meetings in Milwaukee and dis-

Former Sox GM speaks on collapse Chicago Cubs GM Theo Epstein was asked once again about the Sox’s epic September collapse during a panel discussion in Vermont. The former Red Sox GM admitted that a few players were drinking beer in the clubhouse, but it was nothing compared to what went on in 2004. “If you compare the 2011 team to the [World Series champion] 2004 team, they were a bunch of choir boys,” Epstein told ESPN over the weekend. “The difference is we won the last game in ’04.” METRO
