City call Occupy vote ‘betrayal’

Moral support In the news
Stronger concussion rule
Reverend Jesse Jackson made an unannounced stop at the Occupy Philly camp yesterday evening – noting he was “very impressed with the order of it” – and offered words of encouragement for protesters. “Be courageous, have faith, have hope and never surrender,” said Jackson, who was in town for Joe Frazier’s funeral. “You must stand tall.” Jackson spoke as a crush of media and supporters encircled him, at times yelling, “We love, you, Reverend!” and suggesting he run for president.
Gov. Tom Corbett is expected to sign into law enhanced safety measures for student athletes today. The “concussion bill” requires coaches to remove athletes from play if they suspect a concussion and prohibit them from returning until medical clearance.

The relationship between Occupy Philly and the city reached its breaking point this weekend after the movement decided Friday to remain at Dilworth Plaza and city officials yesterday began calling into question the motives and safety of the encampment. Managing Director Rich Negrin said that the group’s decision to stay is “incredibly disappointing and, we think, indicative of something of a betrayal of their original beliefs and cause,” adding that a “more radical element might be gaining control.” Many long-term members, however, claim some Occupiers are eager to move to accommodate a $50 million Dilworth Plaza renovation. But feeding the communication breakdown, Mayor Michael Nut-
ter said yesterday that Occupy Philly has stopped talking with city officials. “It’s impossible to cooperate with someone who is not cooperating with you,” Nutter said. And as far as Occupy’s not-yet-crafted list of demands, Nutter
said, “There are no negotiations because there is no communication.” Occupy Philly voted against regular meetings with city officials and did not respond to multiple e-mails or letters sent by the city in the past week
Police: Rape in tent Bolstering Mayor Nutter and some Occupiers’ claims that the camp has become less safe, police said a woman was sexually assaulted Saturday night. A 23-year-old woman was allegedly dragged into a tent by a 50-year-

and a half, Negrin said. The city has no plans to remove the Occupiers by force, Negrin said — “We’re Philadelphia. We’re not Oakland.” — but he is worried about the possibility of violence. Many at the camp yesterday shared the administration’s concern. Nutter said more officers are patrolling the site. Member David Brouse says he was assaulted at the camp last week while videotaping a fight between two occupants. “We’re feeding the homeless and military veterans, but not giving them their medicines,” he said. “Thefts are rampant – everybody pretty much has stuff stolen.” ALEX WIGGLESWORTH awigglesworth@metro.us

Tot’s history Toys for Tots started in 1947, when a group of U.S. Marine reservists got together and cleaned up small toys and gave them away to needy families. Now, it’s one of the biggest nonprofits in the nation Toys for Tots works by giving away the toys they collect to other nonprofits in the greater Philadelphia region. Last year, they got 600 requests from charities to receive toys and have drop-off boxes set up throughout the city.

2012 elections: gop presidential race
For GOP, Romney No. 1
SCOTT OLSON/GETTY IMAGES
Love him or hate him, the lack of better candidates has placed Mitt at the top of the heap Something to be said for consistency: No gaffes Mitt Romney has a growing lead in the race for the 2012 Republican presidential nomination, and almost half of the party’s voters expect him to be the nominee, according to a Reuters/Ipsos poll. Twenty-eight percent of Republicans backed the former Massachusetts governor, giving him a lead of eight percentage points over his nearest challenger Herman Cain in the poll, taken Nov. 10-11. Romney was five percentage points ahead in a survey Nov. 7-8. Newt Gingrich, the U.S. House of Representatives speaker in the mid-1990s, solidified a recent rise among conservatives seeking an alternative to the more moderate Romney, coming in third place in the current poll with 16 percent. Gingrich, who is seen as having performed well in recent debates, was viewed as the second-most “presidential” of the Republican hopefuls, according to the poll. Whether or not they support him, almost half of the Republicans surveyed expect Romney to
Debate in brief SOUTH CAROLINA. The Republican presidential candidates assembled in Spartanburg on Saturday night for a primary debate, the first to focus entirely on foreign policy and national security. In a diverse dialogue, the eight Republicans outlined the approaches they would take to diplomacy if elected head of state. Here are the five most notable exchanges. REUTERS
He’s got the look When judged on his personal qualities, Romney was rated strongly by Republicans. Romney, the former head of the Bain Capital private equity firm, says his business experience gives him an advantage over other Republicans and Obama in the quest to create jobs for the sluggish U.S. economy. Far more voters see Romney as presidential than they do any of his rivals.
become the nominee to oppose President Barack Obama, a Democrat, in the November 2012 election. Romney, who also ran for president in 2008, has been in first or second place in polls for months and enjoys by far the most campaign funds of the Republican field. But some in his party see him as too liberal, and he has so far failed to significantly boost his level of support in polls. The latest Reuters/Ipsos poll, however, shows he is benefiting from missteps by his rivals.

Torture Is torture acceptable under any circumstances?
1
Herman Cain said he opposed torture but would “trust the judgment of our military leaders.” Michele Bachmann said that she too “would be willing to use water boarding,” which she called “very effective.” Ron Paul disavowed water boarding and torture, which he called “immoral,” as did Jon Huntsman, who argued that torture lowers America’s “standing.”
Assassination Is it OK for the U.S. government to assassinate Americans linked to terror groups?
2
Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich defended the “targeted killing” of Anwar al-Awlaki, a U.S. citizen thought to be part of alQaeda. Romney said he “absolutely” supported the assassination. Gingrich argued al-Awlaki was “found guilty under review.” Paul dissented: “I don’t think we should give up so easily on our rule of law.”
Arab Spring Pessimistic outlook on the Arab Spring
3
Cain suggested “all of the revolutions that are going on” have been “mishandled” by the Obama administration, and “as a result, they have gotten totally out of hand.” Gingrich, meanwhile, worried that the Arab Spring “may become an anti-Christian Spring.”
Republican presidential candidate Rick Perry’s disastrous debate performance last week has hurt his campaign, but may not be fatal, a Reuters/Ipsos poll found. After watching a video of the Texas governor stumbling while trying to name three government agencies he would eliminate if elected, 48 percent of registered Republicans thought less favorably of him, the poll found.
Foreign aid Should we continue billions in foreign aid for Pakistan?
A plurality of 52% voters — 52 percent — felt that Perry should stay in the race despite his debate performances. But while 31 percent of Republicans believed Perry should drop out of the race, many more disagreed. Perry’s campaign went into damage control overdrive on Thursday, putting the governor front and center on news shows. REUTERS
Withdrawal Huntsman makes conservative case for leaving Afghanistan

Rick Perry suggested that as president he would eliminate all foreign aid. Bachmann sharply disagreed, saying that Pakistan is a special case because it’s a nuclear power. And Rick Santorum made a similar point: “We can’t be indecisive about whether Pakistan is our friend. They must be our friend, and we must engage them as friends.”
“I think it’s time to come home,” Huntsman said. “I say this nation has achieved its key objectives in Afghanistan: We had free elections in 2004, we uprooted the Taliban, we have dismantled al-Qaeda, and we killed Osama bin Laden.” He went on: “This nation’s future is how prepared we are to meet the 21st century’s competitive challenges.”

What is going on with Adam Sandler?

Sandler was once comedy’s golden boy. Sure, he was never, ever highbrow — but his comedy was pretty funny. But it seems like in his bid to be a huge box-office draw, Sandler has sunk to the lowest depths of unfunny. In his latest, “Jack and Jill,” he cross-dresses to dam

Have you had an awkward encounter with a funny, feisty New Yorker in the past? You just might be in ‘Stripped Stories’ The tales shared at a “Stripped Stories” session aren’t necessarily sexy. In fact, very few of them are. They are all, however, about sex — and quite funny, provided you weren’t in the room when they happened.

‘Immortals’ conquers the weekend with $32M opening Fanboys returned to the movies in large numbers this weekend, giving “Immortals a strong $32 million opening domestically. That’s $7 million more than Relativity Media had predicted for its R-rated swords-and-sandals epic, which is No. 1 at the weekend box office. Sony’s Adam Sandler comedy, “Jack and Jill, meanwhile, grossed an estimated $26 million. While that’s on the high end of the studio’s low expectations for the PG-rated movie, it does not compare well to the numbers most Adam Sandler films generate in opening weekend. Still, it was enough to put “Jack and Jill at No. 2 for the weekend, just ahead of DreamWorks Animation’s “Puss in Boots.
Henry Cavill stars in the fantasy epic “Immortals. COURTESY OF RELATIVITY MEDIA
That movie, in its third weekend of release, grossed an estimated $25.5 million. The third movie in wide release this weekend, the Warner Bros. biopic “J. Edgar, is still searching for its audience. The R-rated movie with a stellar pedigree — it stars Leonardo DiCaprio and Armie Hammer, was directed by Clint Eastwood and written by Academy Awardwinner Dustin Lance Black —- opened at fifth place, taking in only $11.57 million. Universal’s “Tower Heist, the Ben Stiller-Eddie Murphy comedy, was No. 4 at the box office in its second week of release. It took an estimated $13.2 million — a 45 percent drop from last weekend. The director of ‘Immortals’ doesn’t worship the gods ‘They were nasty f—ups,’ says Tarsem Singh Why he wanted to kill off the stars of Greek mythology Visionary Indian director Tarsem Singh is known for his bold visuals — as seen in his previous films “The Cell and “The Fall — so a fair amount of spectacle is to be expected for his take on Greek mythology, “Immortals. But the boldest visuals might be the gods themselves, portrayed here as fit, young specimens instead of the usual bearded old men. It’s an approach Singh knew would be controversial — though he ad-
mits he wasn’t prepared for just how much blowback he’d get. When Metro caught up with the outspoken auteur, he had a lot to say about his casting decisions. Your Greek gods are a lot more ďŹ t in this movie than we’re used to seeing.
“Immortals is an action flick, and I decided it wasn’t going to be CGI flying and fighting and pointing fingers and lightning
coming out from people’s fingers. Once I decided I wasn’t going to go there, I needed physically fit specimens. So I just said OK, why would I go young with them? And I started to look for reasons, and the reason just being that if you wanted to live forever, nobody wants to look old and miserable and be carrying a catheter around in lateron years. Drama club Greek mythology is very soap opera-y. Very! And for most people, they don’t see it as that. They’re just, “No no no! Zeus was this mighty guy, a voice of reason.” The guy who got pissed off at everybody else and kept killing the wrong people? And then slept with so-and-so’s daughter, so-and-so’s son and everything? And then Poseidon coming down and impregnating people through water? It’s just like, no they were nasty f—ups. And basically soap opera is the right thing.

gods in “Clash of the Titans”?
“Clash” was unfortunately so hurried in competition, funnily enough, with us — just thinking that it had to come out before that. I said I had no interest in competing with a juggernaut that has three times my budget. If they want to turn something like that out, that’s fine. But I don’t know how to
do gods turning cauldrons and going, “What are the humans up to?” That’s so dated. You also suggest in your film that these gods aren’t necessarily all that immortal after all.
I’m like, “Oh my God, people believe in this?” Just the concept of God I find boring, that everyone thinks of these beneficial bearded guys up there that are doing this nasty stuff. NED EHRBAR METRO WORLD NEWS IN LOS ANGELES

Someone’s gonna die!
FOX
TV’s favorite time-traveling cop, Jason O’Mara, gives us the scoop on the season’s dino-sized hit, ‘Terra Nova’ Irish actor Jason O’Mara is back on network television in “Terra Nova,” Fox’s massive, Steven Spielberg-produced sci-fi series about humans from a burned-out future colonizing the distant past in a parallel universe. In it, O’Mara stars as Jim Shannon, a cop and family man making a new life in a jungle overrun with dinosaurs. His last TV gig, “Life on Mars,” was also about a time-traveling cop, coincidentally, but O’Mara insists he’s not trying to make that his niche.
After “Life on Mars” and now this, are you already secretly thinking about your next time-travel role?
No. [Laughs] It was a fluke, really. I didn’t do it because it was another cop traveling through time — I did it in spite of that. It’s an exciting premise and I thought an exciting world, and the idea of a future civilization wrestling with a Cretaceous one was fascinating to me. So what can you reveal about what’s coming up for the rest of the season?
We just revealed a few things, like one of the beloved characters is going to be dying by the end of Season 1, and that a dinosaur would die by the end of Season 1, and that the season finale was going to be pretty ... explosive. You know, I got into trouble from a lot of people [for revealing those plotlines]. A lot of my Twitter followers were like, “Don’t spoil it! What are you doing? You’re killing us, we want to be surprised.” Sometimes it’s

good to tease, but people don’t like to be spoiled. Given the long production time on this series, are you expecting an early notice if there will be a second season?
Well, yeah, everyone wants to be told early. But it’s been quite difficult because
Fox had the World Series this year. We were preempted in favor of baseball one week. Two weeks before that baseball ran over, so our show started 52 minutes late, which is never good. Even DVRs weren’t able to cope with that. It’s
frustrating, but I think the cream always floats to the top — and if we’re meant to have a second season, we’ll get one. NED EHRBAR METRO WORLD NEWS IN LOS ANGELES

Still smoking? Here’s how to quit COMSTOCK
The Great American Smokeout is this week Tips to stay off the pack
Dr. Glynn’s cessation tips
According to the American Cancer Society, tobacco use is the single largest preventable cause of disease and premature death in the US, yet more than 46 million Americans still smoke. The ACS’s 36th Great American Smokeout, taking place this Thursday, is a national movement encouraging smokers to stop. “The battle has been won in awareness of the dangers, says Dr. Thomas J. Glynn, M.A., M.S., Ph.D., the ACS’s director of cancer science, trends and international cancer control. “But most people think that’s only [with regards to] lung cancer. There’s more tobacco-caused heart disease than lung cancer. It also contributes to many other
WWW.METRO.US/ WELLBEING ADD YOUR COMMENTS
cancers, from esophageal to colorectal. And still people smoke, because nicotine is tobacco’s powerfully addictive drug — though it’s not as harmful when independent of cigarettes, which is why nicotine patches and gums are used for quitting. “[Nicotine] is unbelievably addictive, says Glynn. “It’s not easy to quit. It takes the majority of people several attempts before they stop for good. LINDA CLARKE letters@metro.us
In 2010, of the 69 percent of adult smokers surveyed who wanted to quit, only 6.2 percent of the more than half who tried succeeded, according to research released Thursday by the CDC.
Starting fresh There’s no shame in relapsing, only in giving up on giving up. Quit & Stay Quit Monday, part of the Monday Campaigns’ efforts to help people lead
healthier lives, encourages you recommit to quitting on a Monday if you’ve recently slipped. “Monday is a behavior trigger, says Sid Lerner, Monday Campaigns chairman and founder.
“Most people slip over the weekend, but why wait till New Year’s to recommit to quitting smoking? Just requit on a Monday. If you stay quit every Monday, it’s a start.
1
Write down the reasons why you want to stop. Examine your motivation. Long-term quitters are motivated. If you slip, read them and remind yourself.
2
Rally support from family, friends and co-workers. And use counseling or a quitting hotline, such as 1-800-QUIT-NOW, or the ACS’s 1-800-227-2345.
3
Use a substitute. Try to choose something healthy — munch on an apple rather than a candy bar. Most people put on five to eight pounds in weight when they quit smoking. That can be dealt with later.

I
am Dr. Mark Melrose, and my specialty is emergency medicine. An emergency physician is a jack-of-all-trades who can diagnose and initially treat almost any unanticipated illness or injury. We answer questions for people: “Is my chest pain a heart attack? “Does my child have a strep infection? “Do I need stitches for this cut? Here in Metro, I will be available to answer your medical questions; shoot me an e-mail at askdrmark@metro.us. To kick things off, since I recently started caring for patients in my own urgent care medical office, many of my friends and patients who know me as an ER doctor have asked, “What is urgent care, anyway?
Many urgent care centers are open on nights and weekends.
Urgent care centers are walk-in practices that are usually open seven days a week, with extended hours during evenings and weekends when doctors’ offices are closed. When you have an unanticipated illness, injury or health care need that is beyond the scope or
availability of a doctor's office (stitches, X-rays, UTIs, IV fluids for a stomach virus, colds, the flu, etc.), urgent care medical practices offer convenient, customeroriented service. Unlike an ER, you don’t have to compete for care with patients who’ve had heart attacks
he physicians are usually specialists in emergency medicine, but may include family practitioners or internists. Patients may be referred to a specialist if they need a consultation, or back to a primary care doctor for ongoing care. Visits are often covered by insurance; if you’re paying cash, they start at about $150 for a basic evaluation and treatment. Charges are menu-driven for additional tests and procedures. All in all, they add up to only 20 to 30 percent of a visit to the ER. The time saved by not waiting in the ER or for a “try to fit you inâ€? doctor appointment is well worth any out-of-pocket expense. — Mark Melrose, DO, is a board-certiďŹ ed physician and partner at Urgent Care Manhattan. Don’t have the rĂŠsumĂŠ to land that interview? She’s also the founder of coaching service Katalyst Career Group, but be warned: She won’t hold back when your skirt suit is too tight, and she doesn’t
like being bored. Tonight, however, you can get a sneak peek of what Doulton’s looking for in a Fortune 500 executive when her Bravo special, “The Headhuntress, premieres. While she’s the perfect reality star — successful, intense and quick with sharp, British-accented oneliners — she was more than gracious when we asked her to share some of her core career advice. Here’s how to land on Doulton’s radar — or at

Interview your interviewer:
Interviews go both ways.
“The trick here isn’t to answer the question right, it’s to get the job that’s right for you, she says. “It’s like a date: ‘Does he like me, does he like me?’ Well, do you like him? If they said, ‘We didn’t think you were energetic enough,’ if it’s something you can prove you can do or could learn, you could bring a lawsuit.
and say, ‘There are no jobs out there,’ you’ll be right. People want to hire people they like, who are positive and energetic. For good people, there are always, always opportunities. The best barista, the best secretary, the best janitor or executive — there are jobs for these people. If you’re working the system, eventually the system will work for you. MONICA WEYMOUTH

What you need to know about applying to college
Other paths
DIGITAL VISION
Whether you’re a student or are preparing to send a child off, you need to know the process Tips to get you started and navigate the financial aid process As application deadlines loom ahead, students across the country are scrambling to better understand the college admissions process. Steve Cohen is here to help. The co-author of “Getting In: The Zinch Guide to College Admissions and Financial Aid in the Digital Age, Cohen has studied college admissions extensively over the last decade, and has taught at NYU and Fordham University.

How many schools should a student apply to?
You should think about three different categories: “reach,â€? “possibleâ€? and “safetyâ€? schools. The important thing is that you should be happy going to any of them. The number I usually recommend is three in each category. Should you apply to schools you know you can’t aord?
Here’s the first thing to keep in mind: It costs less — in many cases — to go to an elite institution than to go to a state college. The sticker price may be off the charts, but the actual out-of-
pocket that a kid and parent will pay is often significantly less. Wealthier schools have more money to give away in financial aid. And many elite institutions have made a commitment not to saddle the student with debt. They’re more likely to give aid in the form of grants and scholarships. But you don’t get money unless you ask for it. In most cases, it doesn’t hurt to ask. BRUCE WALSH
When might it hurt to ask?
It’s a daunting process, but applying to a number of schools means you’ll have choices come decision time.
bruce.walsh@metro.us
Listen...your new career is
knocking.
What about students who know they need to attend a community college ďŹ rst? It’s important to remember that you still have options. It doesn’t necessarily have to be in your hometown. The tuition is usually statebased. It may be tied directly to a smaller community, but even if you’re paying out-of-state tuition at a community college, it is far, far less expensive than going to a four-year college.
“Colleges fall into one of two categories. You can easily find it on their website. ‘Need-blind’ means admissions and financial aid are totally separate. The other is ‘need-aware,’ which means they might make decisions in part based on if you are asking for financial aid.

College majors that might not land you a job
We all hope to spend our lives doing what we love. Sometimes, though, what we love doesn’t equal a paycheck. Last week, The Wall Street Journal published census data that shows which college majors could prove unhelpful for finding a job. The unemployment rate for new graduates hovers around 9.1 percent. It’s hard enough to land a job, but some majors could lead you to the unemployment line instead of the interview chair. Things are particularly gloomy for psychology

Bayer are the authors of “Professors Behaving Badly: Faculty Misconduct in Graduate Education, officially released by Johns Hopkins University Press last week. “In my experience, administrators almost uniformly view their primary role as protecting the institution, says Bayer, who has studied faculty misconduct for more than two decades. “For them, the best interest of the university is to not let the information get out, even if it’s in violation of the law. higher education make it extremely difficult for a faculty member to bring their complaints publicly. In 1999, Bayer and Proper focused on undergraduate education in “Faculty Misconduct in College Teaching. But a sequel was in the works almost from
the beginning. Their latest effort focuses on graduate-level education at major research institutions. “Graduate education is where faculty have more intimate, one-on-one relationships with students — so there’s much more opportunity to take advantage of students, says Bayer. “One of the major failures is that in most programs there are no courses that teach ethical responsibilities. So we leave it to individual faculty members to demonstrate through their behavior what the ethics should be. Often, students see unethical behavior and they think it’s OK for them to do it. BRUCE WALSH

CARDINALS 21, EAGLES 17
Up next: at NY Giants, Sunday, 8:20 Nov. 27: vs. New England
Not in the Cards, Eagles fading fast Birds watch another fourth-quarter lead slip away on home field Reid sits Jackson for missing team meeting Players still sticking by their head coach GETTY IMAGES
Sometimes, you have to pick your spots. Unfortunately for the Eagles, Andy Reid might have picked the worst one. With the season hanging in the balance, the Eagles coach decided to bench DeSean Jackson, after the receiver missed a special teams meeting. Jackson was inactive yesterday when the Eagles hosted Arizona at Lincoln Financial Field. With one of the team’s most dangerous weapons out of the game plan, the Eagles’ offense looked out of sync, mired in quick sand, as Mike Vick turned in his worst performance of this nightmare season in a 21-17 loss. “Honestly, it was tough,” Vick said. “Playing without a guy you go to war with each and every week and you believe in, have confidence in and him not being there, it was a blow for everybody, not just me. Hopefully, he’ll see that and understand that.” Maybe. But even if Jackson sees the error of his ways, it’s probably too late for a team that once had Super Bowl aspirations. The Eagles would have to run the table — win seven straight games — just to finish at 10-6. “We still have opportunities,” Vick said. “Lord willing, maybe we can end up at 10-6. Who knows? Nobody believes it but us.” The players insist they’re not giving up, not on the season or the coach-

How much do you blame Andy Reid for this one?

ing staff. In fact, almost everyone agreed with Reid’s decision to bench Jackson. “You tell me, if a guy doesn’t do the same things everybody else is doing, then what would you do?,” LeSean McCoy said. “Coach
Reid is very fair with these things. DeSean will tell you that.” And, despite a 3-6 record, there doesn’t seem to be any finger pointing. No lack of trust in the coaches to get it fixed. “We’re still with him [Reid],” McCoy said. “He’s a fair coach, a good coach. We love him to death.” MIKE GREGER

Three things we saw
1
Fifth amendment — For the fifth time this season, the Eagles entered the fourth quarter with a lead and couldn’t hold it. The Cardinals outscored the Eagles 14-3 in the final frame and have been bested 60-23 in the fourth this year. The key play came when John Skelton hit Larry Fitzgerald on a 37-yard bomb that set up the game-winning score. Inexplicably, rookie Jaiquawn Jarrett was left alone to cover Fitzgerald on the play.
2
Feed the beast — LeSean McCoy came in as arguably the hottest running back in the NFL, but saw just 14 touches (for 81 yards) in this one. On a day when Mike Vick was very inaccurate (16-of-34, two picks), Reid wouldn’t commit
McCoy
to the ground game and the Eagles got burned. In one critical stretch in the fourth quarter, the coach called nine straight pass plays.
3
Blame game — You can’t blame the coaches for all the mental mistakes. The Eagles were called for 11 penalties (minus-97 yards), including two — a false start on Riley Cooper, illegal holding on LeSean McCoy — on what turned out to be the team’s final drive with under two minutes remaining.

Flyers walk away with 3-2 victory 100 The Flyers rebounded from last week’s 2-1 overtime loss to Tampa Bay with a 32 win last night over the Florida Panthers. Danny Briere, Braydon Coburn and Matt Read lit the lamp for the Orange and Black, while Ilya Bryzgalov stopped 31 shots to record his fourth win in his last five starts. “Whatever way it is, we’ll take the win, team captain Chris Pronger said. The eventual game-winning goal came off the stick of Read, who scored
on a short-handed penalty shot to give the Flyers a 3-1 lead. Briere’s goal came with 3:50 left in the first period, with Coburn redirecting a pass from Jakub Voracek at the 6:10 mark of the second. METRO

Who doesn’t have fond memories of his first car? Maybe not your highschool, hand-me-down jalopy, but that first new vehicle you actually bought. The one without seat stains or mysterious rattles, and that had a little sex appeal. In my college years, that car was most often the Honda Civic. Now it’s more likely to be a Hyundai or Kia. Your daughter or son may already have an eye on the Hyundai Veloster. Take in the name: someone who has velocity — just this side of hip without pretension. Prices starting at just over $18,000 don’t hurt. At first glance it’s a twodoor wagon, a burst of exaggerated, optimistic design. The long, narrow side windows capture the energy of the Nike swoop, the bulges around the wheels are exuberant. Hood intakes, creases around the nose, magnum-sized headlamps — the only thing the designers didn’t throw in was a kitchen sink. It’s a mess, but a happy one, not unlike a college dorm room. The subtext? Good things happen inside here. It won’t outrun a Porsche, but you probably

don’t want your kid gunning down the street anyhow. I suspect that most enticing to young buyers from Generation Gadget will be the electronics. A seven-inch touchscreen is standard; it operates everything from the Bluetooth to the stereo, which is set up to control an iPod and even shows album covers. The optional navigation system includes a rearview camera. At the end of my drive, I couldn’t help but feel a bit jealous.
