Reverend Jesse Jackson made an unannounced stop at the Occupy Philly camp yesterday evening – noting he was “very impressed with the order of it” – and offered words of encouragement for protesters.

“Be courageous, have faith, have hope and never surrender,” said Jackson, who was in town for Joe Frazier’s funeral. “You must stand tall.”

Jackson spoke as a crush of media and supporters encircled him, at times yelling, “We love, you, Reverend!” and suggesting he run for president.

Gov. Tom Corbett is expected to sign into law enhanced safety measures for student athletes today. The “concussion bill” requires coaches to remove athletes from play if they suspect a concussion and prohibit them from returning until medical clearance.

The relationship between Occupy Philly and the city reached its breaking point this weekend after the movement decided Friday to remain at Dilworth Plaza and city officials yesterday began calling into question the motives and safety of the encampment.

Managing Director Rich Negrin said that the group’s decision to stay is “incredibly disappointing and, we think, indicative of something of a betrayal of their original beliefs and cause,” adding that a “more radical element might be gaining control.”

Many long-term members, however, claim some Occupiers are eager to move to accommodate a $50 million Dilworth Plaza renovation. But feeding the communication breakdown, Mayor Michael Nut-

ter said yesterday that Occupy Philly has stopped talking with city officials.

“It’s impossible to cooperate with someone who is not cooperating with you,” Nutter said. And as far as Occupy’s not-yet-crafted list of demands, Nutter

said, “There are no negotiations because there is no communication.”

Drexel uses scandal to educate

UNIVERSITY CITY. Some local colleges are taking steps to remind faculty and staff about the importance of reporting serious incidents in the wake of Penn State University’s sex abuse scandal.

Drexel University is among the schools who have used the incident to remind administrators about their responsibility.

CENTER CITY. Two men were

injured in a shooting outside the Doubletree Hotel at Broad and Locust streets early yesterday morning.

Police responded around 12:40 a.m. to find one man, 19, propped up against the wall of the hotel with multiple gunshot and stab wounds. Officers found the second man, 18, nearby with a gunshot wound to the foot. He was hospitalized in stable condition. METRO/AW

Man killed in robbery FISHTOWN. A man was killed after a robber fired six shots in his direction while fleeing.

The victim, 27, was walking on the 1300 block of Hewson Street with a woman, 27, around 12:30 a.m. when two white men approached them. Police said one of the robbers fired six times during the robbery, hitting the victim in the chest. He was taken to Temple and pronounced dead at 4:48 a.m. METRO/AW

Tot’s history Toys for Tots started in 1947, when a group of U.S. Marine reservists got together and cleaned up small toys and gave them away to needy families.

Now, it’s one of the biggest nonprofits in the nation Toys for Tots works by giving away the toys they collect to other nonprofits in the greater Philadelphia region.

Last year, they got 600 requests from charities to receive toys and have drop-off boxes set up throughout the city.

Love him or hate him, the lack of better candidates has placed Mitt at the top of the heap Something to be said for consistency: No gaffes Mitt Romney has a growing lead in the race for the 2012 Republican presidential nomination, and almost half of the party’s voters expect him to be the nominee, according to a Reuters/Ipsos poll.

Twenty-eight percent of Republicans backed the former Massachusetts governor, giving him a lead of eight percentage points over his nearest challenger Herman Cain in the poll, taken Nov. 10-11.

Romney was five percentage points ahead in a survey Nov. 7-8.

Newt Gingrich, the U.S. House of Representatives speaker in the mid-1990s, solidified a recent rise among conservatives seeking an alternative to the more moderate Romney, coming in third place in the current poll with 16 percent.

Gingrich, who is seen as having performed well in recent debates, was viewed as the second-most “presidential” of the Republican hopefuls, according to the poll.

‘Immortals’ conquers the weekend with $32M opening Fanboys returned to the movies in large numbers this weekend, giving “Immortals� a strong $32 million opening domestically.

That’s $7 million more than Relativity Media had predicted for its R-rated swords-and-sandals epic, which is No. 1 at the weekend box office.

Sony’s Adam Sandler comedy, “Jack and Jill,� meanwhile, grossed an estimated $26 million.

While that’s on the high end of the studio’s low expectations for the PG-rated movie, it does not compare well to the numbers most Adam Sandler films generate in opening weekend.

Still, it was enough to put “Jack and Jill� at No. 2 for the weekend, just ahead of DreamWorks Animation’s “Puss in Boots.�

The director of ‘Immortals’ doesn’t worship the gods ‘They were nasty f—ups,’ says Tarsem Singh Why he wanted to kill off the stars of Greek mythology Visionary Indian director Tarsem Singh is known for his bold visuals — as seen in his previous films “The Cell� and “The Fall� — so a fair amount of spectacle is to be expected for his take on Greek mythology, “Immortals.� But the boldest visuals might be the gods themselves, portrayed here as fit, young specimens instead of the usual bearded old men. It’s an approach Singh knew would be controversial — though he ad-

“Immortals� is an action flick, and I decided it wasn’t going to be CGI flying and fighting and pointing fingers and lightning

Drama club Greek mythology is very soap opera-y.

Very! And for most people, they don’t see it as that.

They’re just, “No no no!

Zeus was this mighty guy, a voice of reason.” The guy who got pissed off at everybody else and kept killing the wrong people? And then slept with so-and-so’s daughter, so-and-so’s son and everything? And then Poseidon coming down and impregnating people through water? It’s just like, no they were nasty f—ups.

And basically soap opera is the right thing.

“Clash” was unfortunately so hurried in competition, funnily enough, with us — just thinking that it had to come out before that. I said I had no interest in competing with a juggernaut that has three times my budget. If they want to turn something like that out, that’s fine.

do gods turning cauldrons and going, “What are the humans up to?” That’s so dated.

You also suggest in your film that these gods aren’t necessarily all that immortal after all.

I’m like, “Oh my God, people believe in this?” Just the concept of God I find boring, that everyone thinks of these beneficial bearded guys up there that are doing this nasty stuff.

TV’s favorite time-traveling cop, Jason O’Mara, gives us the scoop on the season’s dino-sized hit, ‘Terra Nova’ Irish actor Jason O’Mara is back on network television in “Terra Nova,” Fox’s massive, Steven Spielberg-produced sci-fi series about humans from a burned-out future colonizing the distant past in a parallel universe.

In it, O’Mara stars as Jim Shannon, a cop and family man making a new life in a jungle overrun with dinosaurs. His last TV gig, “Life on Mars,” was also about a time-traveling cop, coincidentally, but O’Mara insists he’s not trying to make that his niche.

After “Life on Mars” and now this, are you already secretly thinking about your next time-travel role?

No. [Laughs] It was a fluke, really. I didn’t do it because it was another cop traveling through time — I did it in spite of that. It’s an exciting premise and I thought an exciting world, and the idea of a future civilization wrestling with a Cretaceous one was fascinating to me.

So what can you reveal about what’s coming up for the rest of the season?

We just revealed a few things, like one of the beloved characters is going to be dying by the end of Season 1, and that a dinosaur would die by the end of Season 1, and that the season finale was going to be pretty ... explosive. You know, I got into trouble from a lot of people [for revealing those plotlines]. A lot of my Twitter followers were like, “Don’t spoil it! What are you doing? You’re killing us, we want to be surprised.” Sometimes it’s

Given the long production time on this series, are you expecting an early notice if there will be a second season?

Well, yeah, everyone wants to be told early. But it’s been quite difficult because

Fox had the World Series this year. We were preempted in favor of baseball one week. Two weeks before that baseball ran over, so our show started 52 minutes late, which is never good. Even DVRs weren’t able to cope with that. It’s

frustrating, but I think the cream always floats to the top — and if we’re meant to have a second season, we’ll get one.

According to the American Cancer Society, tobacco use is the single largest preventable cause of disease and premature death in the US, yet more than 46 million Americans still smoke. The ACSâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 36th Great American Smokeout, taking place this Thursday, is a national movement encouraging smokers to stop. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The battle has been won in awareness of the dangers,â&#x20AC;? says Dr. Thomas J. Glynn, M.A., M.S., Ph.D., the ACSâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s director of cancer science, trends and international cancer control. â&#x20AC;&#x153;But most people think thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s only [with regards to] lung cancer. Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s more tobacco-caused heart disease than lung cancer. It also contributes to many other

cancers, from esophageal to colorectal.â&#x20AC;?

And still people smoke, because nicotine is tobaccoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s powerfully addictive drug â&#x20AC;&#x201D; though itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not as harmful when independent of cigarettes, which is why nicotine patches and gums are used for quitting. â&#x20AC;&#x153;[Nicotine] is unbelievably addictive,â&#x20AC;? says Glynn. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not easy to quit. It takes the majority of people several attempts before they stop for good.â&#x20AC;?

In 2010, of the 69 percent of adult smokers surveyed who wanted to quit, only 6.2 percent of the more than half who tried succeeded, according to research released Thursday by the CDC.

healthier lives, encourages you recommit to quitting on a Monday if youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve recently slipped. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Monday is a behavior trigger,â&#x20AC;? says Sid Lerner, Monday Campaigns chairman and founder.

â&#x20AC;&#x153;Most people slip over the weekend, but why wait till New Yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s to recommit to quitting smoking? Just requit on a Monday. If you stay quit every Monday, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a start.â&#x20AC;?

Write down the reasons why you want to stop. Examine your motivation.

Long-term quitters are motivated. If you slip, read them and remind yourself.

Rally support from family, friends and co-workers.

And use counseling or a quitting hotline, such as 1-800-QUIT-NOW, or the ACSâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 1-800-227-2345.

Use a substitute. Try to choose something healthy â&#x20AC;&#x201D; munch on an apple rather than a candy bar. Most people put on five to eight pounds in weight when they quit smoking. That can be dealt with later.

An emergency physician is a jack-of-all-trades who can diagnose and initially treat almost any unanticipated illness or injury.

We answer questions for people: â&#x20AC;&#x153;Is my chest pain a heart attack?â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;Does my child have a strep infection?â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;Do I need stitches for this cut?â&#x20AC;? To kick things off, since I recently started caring for patients in my own urgent care medical office, many of my friends and patients who know me as an ER doctor have asked, â&#x20AC;&#x153;What is urgent care, anyway?â&#x20AC;?

Many urgent care centers are open on nights and weekends.

Urgent care centers are walk-in practices that are usually open seven days a week, with extended hours during evenings and weekends when doctorsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; offices are closed. When you have an unanticipated illness, injury or health care need that is beyond the scope or

availability of a doctor's office (stitches, X-rays, UTIs, IV fluids for a stomach virus, colds, the flu, etc.), urgent care medical practices offer convenient, customeroriented service. Unlike an ER, you donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have to compete for care with patients whoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve had heart attacks

he physicians are usually specialists in emergency medicine, but may include family practitioners or internists. Patients may be referred to a specialist if they need a consultation, or back to a primary care doctor for ongoing care.

Visits are often covered by insurance; if youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re paying cash, they start at about $150 for a basic evaluation and treatment. Charges are menu-driven for additional tests and procedures. All in all, they add up to only 20 to 30 percent of a visit to the ER. The time saved by not waiting in the ER or for a â&#x20AC;&#x153;try to fit you inâ&#x20AC;? doctor appointment is well worth any out-of-pocket expense. â&#x20AC;&#x201D; Mark Melrose, DO, is a board-certiďŹ ed physician and partner at Urgent Care Manhattan.

How many schools should a student apply to?

You should think about three different categories: â&#x20AC;&#x153;reach,â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;possibleâ&#x20AC;? and â&#x20AC;&#x153;safetyâ&#x20AC;? schools. The important thing is that you should be happy going to any of them. The number I usually recommend is three in each category.

Should you apply to schools you know you canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t aďŹ&#x20AC;ord?

Hereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the first thing to keep in mind: It costs less â&#x20AC;&#x201D; in many cases â&#x20AC;&#x201D; to go to an elite institution than to go to a state college. The sticker price may be off the charts, but the actual out-of-

pocket that a kid and parent will pay is often significantly less.

Wealthier schools have more money to give away in financial aid.

And many elite institutions have made a commitment not to saddle the student with debt. Theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re more likely to give aid in the form of grants and scholarships. But you donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t get money unless you ask for it.

In most cases, it doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t hurt to ask.

It doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t necessarily have to be in your hometown.

The tuition is usually statebased. It may be tied directly to a smaller community, but even if youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re paying out-of-state tuition at a community college, it is far, far less expensive than going to a four-year college.

â&#x20AC;&#x153;Colleges fall into one of two categories. You can easily find it on their website. â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Need-blindâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; means admissions and financial aid are totally separate. We all hope to spend our lives doing what we love.

Sometimes, though, what we love doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t equal a paycheck. Last week, The Wall Street Journal published census data that shows which college majors could prove unhelpful for finding a job.

Why Occupy?

Sometimes, you have to pick your spots.

Unfortunately for the Eagles, Andy Reid might have picked the worst one.

With the season hanging in the balance, the Eagles coach decided to bench DeSean Jackson, after the receiver missed a special teams meeting.

Jackson was inactive yesterday when the Eagles hosted Arizona at Lincoln Financial Field.

With one of the team’s most dangerous weapons out of the game plan, the Eagles’ offense looked out of sync, mired in quick sand, as Mike Vick turned in his worst performance of this nightmare season in a 21-17 loss.

“Honestly, it was tough,” Vick said. “Playing without a guy you go to war with each and every week and you believe in, have confidence in and him not being there, it was a blow for everybody, not just me.

Hopefully, he’ll see that and understand that.”

Maybe. But even if Jackson sees the error of his ways, it’s probably too late for a team that once had Super Bowl aspirations.

The Eagles would have to run the table — win seven straight games — just to finish at 10-6.

“We still have opportunities,” Vick said. “Lord willing, maybe we can end up at 10-6. Who knows?

Fifth amendment — For the fifth time this season, the Eagles entered the fourth quarter with a lead and couldn’t hold it. The Cardinals outscored the Eagles 14-3 in the final frame and have been bested 60-23 in the fourth this year.

The key play came when John Skelton hit Larry Fitzgerald on a 37-yard bomb that set up the game-winning score. Inexplicably, rookie Jaiquawn Jarrett was left alone to cover Fitzgerald on the play.

Feed the beast — LeSean McCoy came in as arguably the hottest running back in the NFL, but saw just 14 touches (for 81 yards) in this one. On a day when Mike Vick was very inaccurate (16-of-34, two picks), Reid wouldn’t commit

Blame game — You can’t blame the coaches for all the mental mistakes. The Eagles were called for 11 penalties (minus-97 yards), including two — a false start on Riley Cooper, illegal holding on LeSean McCoy — on what turned out to be the team’s final drive with under two minutes remaining.
