Reverend Jesse Jackson made an unannounced stop at the Occupy Philly camp yesterday evening – noting he was “very impressed with the order of it” – and offered words of encouragement for protesters. “Be courageous, have faith, have hope and never surrender,” said Jackson, who was in town for Joe Frazier’s funeral. “You must stand tall.” Jackson spoke as a crush of media and supporters encircled him, at times yelling, “We love, you, Reverend!” and suggesting he run for president.

Gov. Tom Corbett is expected to sign into law enhanced safety measures for student athletes today. The “concussion bill” requires coaches to remove athletes from play if they suspect a concussion and prohibit them from returning until medical clearance.

The relationship between Occupy Philly and the city reached its breaking point this weekend after the movement decided Friday to remain at Dilworth Plaza and city officials yesterday began calling into question the motives and safety of the encampment. Managing Director Rich Negrin said that the group’s decision to stay is “incredibly disappointing and, we think, indicative of something of a betrayal of their original beliefs and cause,” adding that a “more radical element might be gaining control.” Many long-term members, however, claim some Occupiers are eager to move to accommodate a $50 million Dilworth Plaza renovation. But feeding the communication breakdown, Mayor Michael Nut-

ter said yesterday that Occupy Philly has stopped talking with city officials. “It’s impossible to cooperate with someone who is not cooperating with you,” Nutter said. And as far as Occupy’s not-yet-crafted list of demands, Nutter

said, “There are no negotiations because there is no communication.” Occupy Philly voted against regular meetings with city officials and did not respond to multiple e-mails or letters sent by the city in the past week

Drexel University is among the schools who have used the incident to remind administrators about their responsibility. Police responded around 12:40 a.m. to find one man, 19, propped up against the wall of the hotel with multiple gunshot and stab wounds. Man killed in robbery FISHTOWN. A man was killed after a robber fired six shots in his direction while fleeing. The victim, 27, was walking on the 1300 block of Hewson Street with a woman, 27, around 12:30 a.m. when two white men approached them. Police said one of the robbers fired six times during the robbery, hitting the victim in the chest. He was taken to Temple and pronounced dead at 4:48 a.m. METRO/AW

Twenty-eight percent of Republicans backed the former Massachusetts governor, giving him a lead of eight percentage points over his nearest challenger Herman Cain in the poll, taken Nov. 10-11. Romney was five percentage points ahead in a survey Nov. 7-8. Newt Gingrich, the U.S. House of Representatives speaker in the mid-1990s, solidified a recent rise among conservatives seeking an alternative to the more moderate Romney, coming in third place in the current poll with 16 percent. Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s $7 million more than Relativity Media had predicted for its R-rated swords-and-sandals epic, which is No. 1 at the weekend box office. Drama club Greek mythology is very soap opera-y. Very! And for most people, they don’t see it as that. They’re just, “No no no! Zeus was this mighty guy, a voice of reason.” The guy who got pissed off at everybody else and kept killing the wrong people? And then slept with so-and-so’s daughter, so-and-so’s son and everything? And then Poseidon coming down and impregnating people through water? It’s just like, no they were nasty f—ups. And basically soap opera is the right thing.

TV’s favorite time-traveling cop, Jason O’Mara, gives us the scoop on the season’s dino-sized hit, ‘Terra Nova’ Irish actor Jason O’Mara is back on network television in “Terra Nova,” Fox’s massive, Steven Spielberg-produced sci-fi series about humans from a burned-out future colonizing the distant past in a parallel universe. In it, O’Mara stars as Jim Shannon, a cop and family man making a new life in a jungle overrun with dinosaurs. His last TV gig, “Life on Mars,” was also about a time-traveling cop, coincidentally, but O’Mara insists he’s not trying to make that his niche.

After “Life on Mars” and now this, are you already secretly thinking about your next time-travel role?

No. [Laughs] It was a fluke, really. I didn’t do it because it was another cop traveling through time — I did it in spite of that. It’s an exciting premise and I thought an exciting world, and the idea of a future civilization wrestling with a Cretaceous one was fascinating to me. So what can you reveal about what’s coming up for the rest of the season?

We just revealed a few things, like one of the beloved characters is going to be dying by the end of Season 1, and that a dinosaur would die by the end of Season 1, and that the season finale was going to be pretty ... explosive. You know, I got into trouble from a lot of people [for revealing those plotlines]. A lot of my Twitter followers were like, “Don’t spoil it! What are you doing? You’re killing us, we want to be surprised.” Sometimes it’s

According to the American Cancer Society, tobacco use is the single largest preventable cause of disease and premature death in the US, yet more than 46 million Americans still smoke. The ACSâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 36th Great American Smokeout, taking place this Thursday, is a national movement encouraging smokers to stop. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The battle has been won in awareness of the dangers,â&#x20AC;? says Dr. Thomas J. Glynn, M.A., M.S., Ph.D., the ACSâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s director of cancer science, trends and international cancer control. â&#x20AC;&#x153;But most people think thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s only [with regards to] lung cancer. Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s more tobacco-caused heart disease than lung cancer. It also contributes to many other

cancers, from esophageal to colorectal.â&#x20AC;? And still people smoke, because nicotine is tobaccoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s powerfully addictive drug â&#x20AC;&#x201D; though itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not as harmful when independent of cigarettes, which is why nicotine patches and gums are used for quitting. â&#x20AC;&#x153;[Nicotine] is unbelievably addictive,â&#x20AC;? says Glynn. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not easy to quit. In 2010, of the 69 percent of adult smokers surveyed who wanted to quit, only 6.2 percent of the more than half who tried succeeded, according to research released Thursday by the CDC.

Starting fresh Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s no shame in relapsing, only in giving up on giving up. Quit & Stay Quit Monday, part of the Monday Campaignsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; efforts to help people lead

healthier lives, encourages you recommit to quitting on a Monday if youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve recently slipped. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Monday is a behavior trigger,â&#x20AC;? says Sid Lerner, Monday Campaigns chairman and founder.

â&#x20AC;&#x153;Most people slip over the weekend, but why wait till New Yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s to recommit to quitting smoking? Just requit on a Monday. If you stay quit every Monday, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a start.â&#x20AC;?

Write down the reasons why you want to stop. Examine your motivation. Long-term quitters are motivated. If you slip, read them and remind yourself.

Rally support from family, friends and co-workers. And use counseling or a quitting hotline, such as 1-800-QUIT-NOW, or the ACSâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 1-800-227-2345.

Use a substitute. Try to choose something healthy â&#x20AC;&#x201D; munch on an apple rather than a candy bar. Most people put on five to eight pounds in weight when they quit smoking. That can be dealt with later.

am Dr. Mark Melrose, and my specialty is emergency medicine. An emergency physician is a jack-of-all-trades who can diagnose and initially treat almost any unanticipated illness or injury. We answer questions for people: â&#x20AC;&#x153;Is my chest pain a heart attack?â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;Does my child have a strep infection?â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;Do I need stitches for this cut?â&#x20AC;? To kick things off, since I recently started caring for patients in my own urgent care medical office, many of my friends and patients who know me as an ER doctor have asked, â&#x20AC;&#x153;What is urgent care, anyway?â&#x20AC;?

Many urgent care centers are open on nights and weekends.

Urgent care centers are walk-in practices that are usually open seven days a week, with extended hours during evenings and weekends when doctorsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; offices are closed. When you have an unanticipated illness, injury or health care need that is beyond the scope or

availability of a doctor's office (stitches, X-rays, UTIs, IV fluids for a stomach virus, colds, the flu, etc.), urgent care medical practices offer convenient, customeroriented service. Unlike an ER, you donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have to compete for care with patients whoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve had heart attacks

he physicians are usually specialists in emergency medicine, but may include family practitioners or internists. Patients may be referred to a specialist if they need a consultation, or back to a primary care doctor for ongoing care. Visits are often covered by insurance; if youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re paying cash, they start at about $150 for a basic evaluation and treatment. Charges are menu-driven for additional tests and procedures. All in all, they add up to only 20 to 30 percent of a visit to the ER. The time saved by not waiting in the ER or for a â&#x20AC;&#x153;try to fit you inâ&#x20AC;? doctor appointment is well worth any out-of-pocket expense. â&#x20AC;&#x201D; Mark Melrose, DO, is a board-certiďŹ ed physician and partner at Urgent Care Manhattan. The one without seat stains or mysterious rattles, and that had a little sex appeal. In my college years, that car was most often the Honda Civic. Now itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s more likely to be a Hyundai or Kia. Your daughter or son may already have an eye on the Hyundai Veloster. Take in the name: someone who has velocity â&#x20AC;&#x201D; just this side of hip without pretension. Prices starting at just over $18,000 donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t hurt. At first glance itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a twodoor wagon, a burst of exaggerated, optimistic design. The long, narrow side windows capture the energy of the Nike swoop, the bulges around the wheels are exuberant. Hood intakes, creases around the nose, magnum-sized headlamps â&#x20AC;&#x201D; the only thing the designers didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t throw in was a kitchen sink. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a mess, but a happy one, not unlike a college dorm room. The subtext? Good things happen inside here. It wonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t outrun a Porsche, but you probably

The optional navigation system includes a rearview camera. At the end of my drive, I couldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t help but feel a bit jealous. I had a Honda Civic in college and was inordinately proud of the six-CD changer Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d had installed. A car like the Veloster makes that 90s-era Civic look neolithic. BLOOMBERG
