Dilworth camp set to stay ... for now KEVIN COOK/METRO

$50M plaza makeover isn’t ready to begin, official says Occupiers antsy as other cities crack down Despite increasing crackdowns on Occupy camps in cities like New York City, Portland, Ore. and Oakland, Calif., Philadelphia officials said they have no plans to remove the protesters — yet. “The city is not removing, evicting, or doing anything to anybody today,” said Nutter spokesman Mark McDonald yesterday. “It isn’t asking anybody to leave.” The planned Dilworth Plaza renovation, originally set for mid-November, is currently mired in legal and logistical preparations and will not be ready to begin until as late as December, McDonald said. “We’ve made it very clear that there is a construction project that will start shortly and when we get a specific date from the

Protesters intensified nonviolent resistance and de-escalation training. “I believe a crackdown is imminent,” said John Phillips. “‘If’ is not a question anymore — it’s when.” ALEX WIGGLESWORTH awigglesworth@metro.us

Auction going once, going twice First of two housing auctions held today Another unique selloff of hundreds of homes will be Dec. 7 Interested homebuyers and savvy developers are expected to take part in the Philadelphia Housing Authority’s auction of about 400 properties today at the Westin Hotel. PHA received approval from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development to sell the properties as part of 1,100 it can no longer afford to maintain or develop. The list includes scattered sites across the city, ranging from vacant lots to town homes and multi-unit buildings. The properties will be offered individually and in bundles of up to 25. This will be PHA’s first auction and, given lower home prices, it is expected to draw plenty of interest from both mid-level and smaller developers and firsttime homebuyers. Those looking to purchase a fixerupper for themselves could get a nice deal, according to Bob Dann, chief operating officer of Max Spann Real and Auction Co., which is managing the auction.

If you go The auction will begin 2 p.m. at the Westin Hotel, 99 S. 17th St. Successful bidders will need to bring a $2,500 cashier’s check and put down 10 percent.

“I think there’s something for everyone. There are lots of individual properties and there’s only one package of 25,” he said. “They’re rolling out another auction on [Dec. 7] that will have all individual properties — so if they don’t get one here, at least see how the auction works and be in better position to get one [then].” The number of properties available in December has not been determined, Dann said. He recommended that those interested in making a purchase do their homework to know what they’re buying, set a price limit and stick to it. SOLOMON D. LEACH sleach@metro.us

Workers are setting up for Christmas Village in Love Park due to the planned $50 million construction at Dilworth Plaza. From Thanksgiving through Christmas Eve, vendors in more than 50 wooden booths will sell traditional European food and drinks, along with jewelry and other trinkets. The outdoor holiday market was located in Dilworth Plaza for the past two years, but major renovations are expected to begin next month, the city said. To accommodate the wooden booths in Love Park, the benches have

been removed and the holiday tree has been set up in the fountain. Last year, the outdoor market became a national story when city officials replaced the word “Christmas” with “Holiday” on several signs due to a complaint, but changed it back after being widely criticized by residents and pundits alike, including Fox’s Bill O’Reilly. While the market will open next Thursday, the grand opening is scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 26. SOLOMON D. LEACH sleach@metro.us

The lawyer who took on the Roman Catholic Church in Boston in a sex-abuse case has some advice for Penn State University: embrace the victims and tell the whole truth, promptly. Most legal experts agree that Penn State is likely to face civil lawsuits from alleged victims in the child sex abuse scandal that ousted the university’s president and legendary football coach Joe Paterno. The size of Penn State’s legal headaches and the damage to its reputation will depend on how the university reacts, according to lawyer Roderick MacLeish. The university first

facts come from the source,” MacLeish attested. “They’re going to come out. It will give them credibility.” Penn State should also offer unconditional mental health treatment to the alleged victims and set up a private victims’ compensation fund, sparing potential plaintiffs the “horrors of litigation,” he added. MacLeish, who has no connection to the Penn State case, was the lead lawyer in a clergy abuse case against the Archdiocese of Boston that settled in 2003. The church’s combative legal stance ultimately backfired, MacLeish said. REUTERS

the baby If you are a baby and happen to come across singer Patti LaBelle, it’s best if you pull up your diaper, grab your rattle and crawl right out of there. It was disclosed yesterday in a lawsuit filed in Manhattan Supreme Court that the singer screamed obscenities at a toddler and threw a punch at the baby’s mother (who also happens to be a school teacher) sometime this year. The mother, Roseanna Monk, is now suing LaBelle, who was living in Monk’s Manhattan apartment building while appearing on Broad-

As she tells “The View,” having her 9-monthold daughter Sadie around was a priority when deciding to do the new NBC show. “My whole thing was, ‘I’m not doing this unless I can bring her.’ So they had to build me a room for her and it’s got her toys and a crib and she takes her naps there,” the actress explains. “That’s called a crazy mother who said, ‘No, I’m not doing anything unless I can be with my baby.’”

It’s not terribly surprising that “A Play, a Pie and a Pint” caught on in Philly, where all things hoppy and doughy are treated with instinctive reverence. Even so, Emma Gibson wasn’t prepared for the crowds that flocked to the sold-out Society Hill Playhouse last month for Tiny Dynamite Productions’ one-act, onehour plays served up with beer and pizza. “I thought it would work well in Philadelphia, but it was quite extraordinary,” says Gibson, artistic director and founder of Tiny Dynamite. “The people who came were not traditional theatergoers. Not everyone is huge on going to the theater — it’s expensive, it takes a lot of time, it’s not always accessible. But this is very casual, so people come in and they have a drink, they have a bite to eat.” The series originally debuted in Glasgow as lunchtime productions, but Gib-

‘Immortals’ six-pack impact Getting into godlike shape for “Immortals” clearly wasn’t an easy task But you can’t argue with results Here, some of the guys from the film talk about what went into bringing perfection to life PHOTOS: JAN THIJS

Henry Cavill could crush some beer cans against that six-pack.

The downside of looking so good:

Stephen Dorff

The ‘joys’ of the ‘Immortals’ diet: Stephen Dorff (Stavros): “The crew would break for lunch and we couldn’t go near it. We would get these little stunt meals in this box and we’d be hungry right afterwards. It was very clean, no carbs. To have no body fat, you have to eat ridiculously clean. It’s very boring — no salt, none of the good stuff. So on my day off I would go to McDonald’s, ice cream places and pizza places and eat until the point that I [would] feel sick.”

Stephen Dorff: “The only problem was I had crazy abs that wouldn’t go away. For my next movie, I had to not look like I was in a gym. So it was complicated. I had to learn to stick my stomach out so I could hide my ‘Immortals’ body. [It] took a while; you have muscle memory when you work out that hard.” Luke Evans (Zeus): “I now have a bone that’s raised on my shoulder which I never had before, which is like a scapula or clavicle tear. It’s never gone down. I just have this strange structural skeletal problem now, thanks to ‘Immortals.’”

Letting the training help with the acting Luke Evans: “I trained for seven weeks. It makes you stand differently. You look yourself in the mirror and you look different. I saw my body change in seven weeks. It does definitely do something to inform your character in a sort of subliminal way. It defi-

nitely had an effect for me.” Henry Cavill (Theseus): “It’s like wearing a permanent costume. Before work when you look in the mirror — or even before looking in the mirror — you do feel different. A part of the character is more expressive in you and so when you’re in that kind of shape, I essentially was wearing my costume because I barely had [one].” Stephen Dorff: “The training for ‘Immortals’ was quite intense, because we wear no clothes in the movie. It’s the one film where if you don’t put in the work, you’re going to look kind of dumb when you’re older and you rent this puppy. Or one of your kids sees it and says, ‘Daddy, you’re naked in this but why are you fat?’”

A new look at ‘J. Edgar’ ‘Milk’ screenwriter Dustin Lance Black won an Oscar for that movie Now with Leonardo DiCaprio, he takes on the former head of the FBI

A

fter winning an Oscar for his screenplay for “Milk,” another biopic should have been a piece of cake for Dustin Lance Black. Of course, the life of infamous FBI leader J. Edgar Hoover is no ordinary biography — especially given Hoover’s penchant for secrecy about pretty much everything in his life, including his rumored lifelong love affair with Clyde Tolson. But Black likes a challenge, and while that love story is at the heart of the Clint Eastwood-directed “J. Edgar,” what really drew Black to the story was Hoover’s amassing of power and refusal to relinquish it. Black covers Hoover’s life from his early 20s until his death at age 77, passing along a whole new challenge to star Leonardo DiCaprio.

The film covers a wide span of Hoover’s life. When you were writing the script, did you know it would be played by one actor?

No, in fact I try not to consider casting when I’m writing — especially a biopic like this, when I don’t have the opportunity to meet the real guy. It’s enough work to try and figure out who he was and get a handle on how he might’ve been, how he might’ve talked, the things he might’ve been thinking and feeling, his behavior — you know, all that’s tough enough. So it’s not until I’ve turned it in, I think wow, that’s going to be challenging. He has to play 20s into his 30s and then 60s into his 70s, and that’s a pretty broad range. At what point did you know Leonardo DiCaprio would be playing the part?

Things moved very quickly once I turned in the

Q&A Eastwood recently voiced his support for gay marriage, saying people are “making a big deal out of things we shouldn’t make a big deal out of.” Did you two discuss any political or social issues?

Once and for all, who pays on a date? CREATAS

I’m a single guy in the city. I’m really tired of gold-digging women expecting me to pay for everything on dates. I understand it’s appropriate to pay for the ďŹ rst date or two, but why is it that women can’t chip in at all when they want equality in every other part of life? How can I handle this? I want to continue to date but don’t want to go broke doing so.

N

o doubt, you’ll encounter women who are simply after a good meal. Many female clients have told me they go out with a new guy several nights a week just to get a free dinner. Don’t be a victim to such gold-digging. Pay for the first date if you initiate it. No need to take someone to an expensive restaurant on a first date. The downside of downward dog Just how does one get through the most unpleasant moments that can occur in yoga class? Plus, some etiquette rules to remember

A

embarrassing incident during yoga class is to laugh it off. “Yoga is a moving meditation that allows you to let go of a lot of things in life. Getting annoyed or agitated adds

ccording to Devon Spencer-Smith, yoga instructor at the Rise Movement studio in Los Angeles (Kristen Stewart is a fan), the best way to deal with an

Problem 1:

Your instructor has likely seen (and heard) it all.

aggressiveness and ego to your practice, which defies its purpose,” she says. Other than having a sense of humor, here are some ways you can address mortifying mat moments.

Problem 2:

You find yourself embarrassed to make a sound

You make an, erm, unexpected noise

That “ohm” in the beginning can leave firsttimers in a fit of giggles. Solution: The origin of the sound comes from Sanskrit and actually has no religious connotations. Its purpose is to mentally bring everyone into and out of the class. “It’s what helps you stay focused and aware of your breath,” says David Kim, instructor at L.A.’s YogaWorks studio. “If doing the ‘ohm’ really embarrasses you, then do a very quiet one under your breath,” Kim suggests.

Passing wind in public is bad enough. It’s even worse when it happens during a silent yoga class. Solution: “If a student passes gas, ignore it,” says Kim. “Some poses trigger the release of gas, especially twists and inversions that upset digestion.” And if it’s you you’re worried about, avoid eating two to three hours before a class, and relax: The anxiety over trying not to fart can make it happen.

Problem 3:

You settle next to a rude neighbor You get there an hour early to secure the best mat spot. Five minutes into class, the aggravator arrives, puts his mat an inch from yours, blocks your entire view and wedges his toes in your face. Solution: The teacher should lay down the law. “It’s only fair to have a 15-minute rule, after which the people aren’t allowed in,” says Kim. Barring that, ask them to be careful — and wish them namaste afterward.

YOGA POSE OF THE WEEK: SLEEPING TORTOISE This pose, from Bodyism Yoga instructor Stephanie Knutsson, is especially great for beginners METRO Each Wednesday here in Metro, as part of our expanded Wellbeing section, we’ll share a top yoga pose from the pros. Why yoga? We love that it’s known to build strength, lower blood pressure and calm the mind, to name just a few of its benefits.

1

Start in a seated position, with your knees out to the sides and

the soles of the feet together. Have the heels about a foot away from the groin.

2 3

Grab the feet from above and reach out under the legs to grab the toes. Take a breath in and let the knees drop. On an exhale, round your spine and pull the head towards the

feet. Release the neck and drop the head. Hold this position for about 30 seconds.

4

To come out of the pose, exhale and release the hands and feet. On an inhale, lift the torso up to a sitting position. Use your hands to help you draw your knees back to center. FOR METRO’S LATEST HEALTH NEWS, GO TO: HEALTH.METRO.US

Without jobs, who to exploit? I hope the OWS people go out and get jobs soon. If they don’t start working on their retirement funds and 401(k)s now, then what will bankers be able to recklessly overleverage during the next boom/bust cycle? DANIEL CIAMBRONE, VIA E-MAIL

Congress gets rich illegally This is real easy if you have half a brain. OWS is about corruption and greed that affects all of us. “60 Minutes” just

aired a piece on how our congressional leaders use nonpublic information in order to make large amounts of cash for themselves. People go to jail for that; it’s called insider trading. I understand the protestors have rights according to the First Amendment. But does that right include taxpayers footing the bills that come with these rights? Our cities are spending hundreds of thousands per week of taxpayer monies to allow OWS their First Amendment rights. Why don’t they pay

To Michael Chimenti, who asserted that America was built on the concept of “work,” something he says OWS protesters wouldn’t understand: Do you mean all that work Americans did by enslaving Africans and forcing them to work for them for over 500 years while they sipped sweet tea in between lashings, rapes and lynchings? If your argument is true, then OWS is just following in that fine example set by their forefathers!

Senior defensive tackle Devon Still are focused on beating Ohio State this week.

It’s Ohio State week at State College. But it has a much different feel than it has in past seasons, considering all that has transpired in the past week and a half. So, with all the emotions still swirling around the Penn State program, the practice field has turned into the best place on campus. At least for the players. “I think a lot of times, with everything that swirls around them, they enjoy coming to practice because it’s the one time they can just kind of be with themselves,” interim coach Tom Bradley said. “No one’s asking them questions; they’re there to play football. And they know they have a job to do this week. We’re still in the hunt for this Big Ten Championship.” The Nittany Lions (8-2) are in the thick of the league championship as they prepare for Ohio State. The Buckeyes (6-4) are no strangers to scandal, after an illegal benefits fiasco forced their head coach out.

Quoted

“I’m not going to go there. I was watching Ohio State, and I’ve got more important things right now.” TOM BRADLEY, ON IF HE WATCHED THE JERRY SANDUSKY INTERVIEW

Saturday Penn State (8-2) at Ohio State (6-4), 3:30 p.m.

But that’s not the focus. This week is about football. “It’s still Ohio State-Penn State,” Bradley said. “One of the things I want to emphasize right now; this is all about the players, it’s about our team, their team.” Penn State is still eligible for a bowl bid and Bradley admitted that he would accept it. However, that may not be his decision to make. “That’s the administration’s decision,” he said. “So whatever they decide, that’s what we’ll do.” METRO

Another part of the PSU tragedy That Big Ten trophy Penn State is still in the hunt for is missing a familiar name. On Monday, league commissioner Jim Delany said it was “inappropriate” to keep Joe Paterno’s name on the championship trophy. It has been renamed as the Stagg Championship Trophy. Paterno, of course, was fired last week as head coach at Penn State after fallout from the Jerry Sandusky child sex scandal. “I just think it’s another part of a tragedy that’s occurring,” PSU interim coach Tom Bradley said yesterday. FLYERS: INTERVIEW WITH SEAN COUTURIER

LEARNING AND ADAPTING Flyers rookie making presence felt in limited role Couturier tied for third on team in goals scored, while boasting plus-9 Club acquired 18-year-old as part of Jeff Carter deal Recently moved in with Danny Briere

S

ean Couturier, a long shot to make the Flyers in training camp, has already scored five goals and three assists, while playing primarily a penalty killing, checking role. His plus-9 ratio is 14th in the entire NHL. “He continues to play solid hockey for us at both ends of the ice,” coach Peter Laviolette said. “Defensively, penalty kill, he does the right things. Offensively, he got some opportunities and cashed them in.” Couturier, 18, who was the Flyers’ first-round draft choice — the team used the pick acquired in the Jeff Carter deal on him — recently spoke

with Metro about his transition to the NHL. Do you still pinch yourself about being in the NHL?

Not really anymore. I’m just trying to think team first and do whatever I can do to help the team win. Since day one of training camp, I tried to take it one day at a time, one game at a time. It’s been going pretty well, so I won’t change my philosophy. Did you expect to play such a key penalty killing and defensive role? And where did you learn that style?

I knew, obviously, coming in as a rookie, I’d have to make my way up. Whatever I can do to help the team, I’ll do my best and

Couturier says he’s taking it one game at a time.

Quoted

“Right now I’m just trying to learn the most I can, develop as fast as I can. Maybe in a couple of years I’ll have a bigger role on the team.”

started out pretty well and coach has confidence in me. I’m a bit surprised by that. At the same time, I try to work hard every day and get better. Do you feel you are here to stay? And what is it like for an 18-year-old kid in a new city to be on his own?

You never know ... with the salary cap, things can change. I’m just focusing on right now. I moved in with Danny Briere a couple of weeks ago. Just being around him, learning from him — what he does on and off the ice — is good for me. What was it like watching a shootout loss to the Devils [Nov. 3] and were you hoping you would get a chance?

You try not to think too much when you’re in shootout mode, so I was just enjoying the show. In juniors I’d be the go-to guy. Here, it’s different, I’m still adapting myself and learning. JON MARKS

AN INDECENT PROPOSAL? Opinion

JASON McINTYRE SPORTS@METRO.US

Metro does not endorse the opinions of the author, or any opinions expressed on its pages. Opposing viewpoints are welcome. Send submissions to letters@metro.us.

This weekend we had perhaps the best football player/cheerleader on-field moment since Boise State’s Ian Johnson proposed to his cheerleader girlfriend.

O

f course you remember when Johnson’s Broncos stunned Oklahoma in one of the wildest bowl games of the last decade, but this week an NFL player scored a touchdown and ran to give his girlfriend — a cheerleader on the opposing team — the ball. In the Bills-Cowboys game Sunday, the crowd was stunned by what went down, and the announcers, who apparently don’t read sports blogs, had no clue what was going on. David Nelson plays for the Bills. He’s from Texas and went to the University of Florida. Kelsi Reich is his girlfriend, and she’s a cheerleader for the Cowboys. After Nelson scored he jogged down the sideline toward his girlfriend. The camera operator seemed to know what was up, but the announcers were clueless about the whole thing. Reich hopped on Twitter Sunday and showed everyone the ball, proclaiming she was the “happiest Kelsi girl in the Reich world.”

Uninformed vs. ‘fans’ I lobbied the editor of this space to get in a word about the lurid Penn State scandal. How can I not at least address what is the biggest scandal in the history of college sports? I’ll try to be succinct in my two points on the subject. There are two groups of people chiming in on this sordid tale: Those who have read the 23-page grand jury report (they’re informed), and those who haven’t (they’re uninformed). While the report is detailed, it does not include everyone’s entire testimony. It did contain enough detail to press charges against former Penn State defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky though. At the same time, there are two other groups of people who feel compelled to talk about the topic: college football “fans” and people who have zero connection to the sport besides maybe having heard of Joe Paterno prior to the scandal. A large portion of college football “fans,” for whatever reason, find it hard to believe a coverup could take place. Most of these people have not read the grand jury report. People who live in a world unaware 107,000 people pack Beaver Stadium every game think everyone involved in the scandal knew what was going on and, disgustingly, did nothing. – Jason Raj McIntyre covers athletes off the field and runs the popular blog, The Big Lead.

This was anything but a classic Big 5 game. The La Salle-Villanova matchup last night on the Main Line was plain ugly at times. Missed shots, turnovers and all-around sloppy play were the norm. But in the end, the Wildcats (2-0) made just enough plays to eke out their 10th straight win over the Explorers, 76-69, in overtime. “Big 5 game, I always say that. I say this all the time to the guys. We know anything can happen in these games, Villanova coach Jay Wright said. Both teams looked impressive in their openers last Friday, with the Wild-

cats routing Monmouth 106-70 and La Salle crushing Lafayette 79-53. But that certainly wasn’t the case in the encore for both teams. The Wildcats committed 14 turnovers by halftime and missed their first 13 three-pointers. They trailed by five with 1:24 left in regulation. Maalik Wayns paced Villanova with 22 points, while Dominic Cheek contributed 18 points and James Bell adding 15. Tyreek Duren led La Salle (1-1) with 22 points. ANDY JASNER

Jay Wright’s team improved to 2-0.

The Aldyn in NYC features amenities such as a bowling alley as well as basketball and squash courts.

When it comes to condominium amenities, private luxury spas seem a long way from such basics as onsite laundry. But the past few years have seen spas become almost as normal an apartment addition as a fully stocked gym and swimming pool. In Manhattan, 515 E. 72nd St. opened its in-house Elements Spa in September, offering residents (and visiting friends and family) everything from massages to nail treatments. In Philadelphia, Waterfront Square features a luxury European Spa boast-

ing treatment rooms as well a sauna and steam room. In Boston, 45 Province’s Exhale spa is also exclusively for residents. Besides a spa, fitness facilities and heated pool, 45 Province offers valet park-

New York’s The Aldyn has a bowling alley — plus basketball and squash courts, a rock-climbing wall and a golf simulator. Never mind the yoga, Pilates and other fitness initiatives onsite — all of which is exclusive for residents. “Amenities have become the in-building entertainment,” says Larry Kruysman, sales director for The Aldyn, which is

part of Extell Developments portfolio. “People are looking for opportunities to socialize and experience quality time with friends and family.” However, Kruysman doesn’t think huge facilities like the Aldyn will become the norm. “It made sense for Extell to do it here. We had the empty space and 700 apartments to share the expense and make it affordable for residents. Generally, developments are going toward studio and one-bedroom apartments with outside

areas where residents can entertain friends, like roof decks and lounges. Smaller developments will remain the norm.”

Amenities are reflected in monthly common charges. Waterfront Square has one-bedroom condos starting at at $275,000 and monthly common charges are $436. Spa prices, however, are comparable to any commercial luxury spa: around $125 for a 60-minute massage.

BRAVO

We asked Simon de Pury, art expert and mentor on Bravo’s “Work of Art: The Next Great Artist” for his tips Look at listings

“Work of Art: The Next Great Artist” with Simon de Pury airs Wednesdays at 9 p.m. on Bravo.

“The websites of the main auction houses give you the full programs of all the auctions going on. Then there is a magazine called Artforum in which most galleries advertise, and that gives you a pretty good overview in terms of contemporary art.”

Visit in person

“Go and see as many exhibitions as possible,” he adds. “Or go and visit all the auction previews just to have an overall view and see what there is. And when there are the art fairs, like the Armory Art Fair in New York, go.” Think long-term

“Buy a work that does not only have initial strong appeal but will be great in the long run. I think the good thing is first to go out and not make any acquisitions — just make mental acquisitions. Work out what it is you personally love, and once you’ve done that, then it’s better

“A little to the left — no wait, more to the right.”

to leap in the water and do your first purchases.” Research prices

“Once you have identified what appeals to you personally, then you can do a bit of homework on pricing,” he says. “For instance, you can go on certain websites that give you the price obtained by

any artwork at public auctions, so you can see what ballpark figures you may have to spend to buy what you love. There is a website called Artnet.com, and there you can type in any artist and see, for instance, the top hundred most expensive works ever sold by that artist, with images and details of

“You can go to the flea market [and] make great finds,” de Pury says. “It requires time, but it’s a fun thing to do. I myself enjoy going to the flea market or to eBay. If you want to focus on the great masters and don’t want to pay the kind of prices you may have pay for them, you can collect editions, which are [for example] prints, lithographs or etchings. There is a very active market for those.” when and where they were sold.” Try haggling

“You can negotiate,” de Pury says, “and you can make an offer on a work, saying that is what you’re prepared to pay.” MEREDITH ENGEL
