Auction going once, going twice First of two housing auctions held today Another unique selloff of hundreds of homes will be Dec. 7 Interested homebuyers and savvy developers are expected to take part in the Philadelphia Housing Authority’s auction of about 400 properties today at the Westin Hotel. PHA received approval from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development to sell the properties as part of 1,100 it can no longer afford to maintain or develop. The list includes scattered sites across the city, ranging from vacant lots to town homes and multi-unit buildings. The properties will be offered individually and in bundles of up to 25. This will be PHA’s first auction and, given lower home prices, it is expected to draw plenty of interest from both mid-level and smaller developers and firsttime homebuyers. Those looking to purchase a fixerupper for themselves could get a nice deal, according to Bob Dann, chief operating officer of Max Spann Real and Auction Co., which is managing the auction.

“I think there’s something for everyone. Workers are setting up for Christmas Village in Love Park due to the planned $50 million construction at Dilworth Plaza. From Thanksgiving through Christmas Eve, vendors in more than 50 wooden booths will sell traditional European food and drinks, along with jewelry and other trinkets. The outdoor holiday market was located in Dilworth Plaza for the past two years, but major renovations are expected to begin next month, the city said. To accommodate the wooden booths in Love Park, the benches have

been removed and the holiday tree has been set up in the fountain. Last year, the outdoor market became a national story when city officials replaced the word “Christmas” with “Holiday” on several signs due to a complaint, but changed it back after being widely criticized by residents and pundits alike, including Fox’s Bill O’Reilly. We would get these little stunt meals in this box and we’d be hungry right afterwards. It was very clean, no carbs. To have no body fat, you have to eat ridiculously clean. It’s very boring — no salt, none of the good stuff. So on my day off I would go to McDonald’s, ice cream places and pizza places and eat until the point that I [would] feel sick.”

A new look at ‘J. Edgar’ ‘Milk’ screenwriter Dustin Lance Black won an Oscar for that movie Now with Leonardo DiCaprio, he takes on the former head of the FBI

fter winning an Oscar for his screenplay for “Milk,” another biopic should have been a piece of cake for Dustin Lance Black. Of course, the life of infamous FBI leader J. Edgar Hoover is no ordinary biography — especially given Hoover’s penchant for secrecy about pretty much everything in his life, including his rumored lifelong love affair with Clyde Tolson. But Black likes a challenge, and while that love story is at the heart of the Clint Eastwood-directed “J. Edgar,” what really drew Black to the story was Hoover’s amassing of power and refusal to relinquish it. Black covers Hoover’s life from his early 20s until his death at age 77, passing along a whole new challenge to star Leonardo DiCaprio.

The film covers a wide span of Hoover’s life. When you were writing the script, did you know it would be played by one actor?

No, in fact I try not to consider casting when I’m writing — especially a biopic like this, when I don’t have the opportunity to meet the real guy. It’s enough work to try and figure out who he was and get a handle on how he might’ve been, how he might’ve talked, the things he might’ve been thinking and feeling, his behavior — you know, all that’s tough enough. So it’s not until I’ve turned it in, I think wow, that’s going to be challenging. He has to play 20s into his 30s and then 60s into his 70s, and that’s a pretty broad range. At what point did you know Leonardo DiCaprio would be playing the part?

That “ohm” in the beginning can leave firsttimers in a fit of giggles. Solution: The origin of the sound comes from Sanskrit and actually has no religious connotations. Its purpose is to mentally bring everyone into and out of the class. “It’s what helps you stay focused and aware of your breath,” says David Kim, instructor at L.A.’s YogaWorks studio. “If doing the ‘ohm’ really embarrasses you, then do a very quiet one under your breath,” Kim suggests.

Passing wind in public is bad enough. It’s even worse when it happens during a silent yoga class. Solution: “If a student passes gas, ignore it,” says Kim. “Some poses trigger the release of gas, especially twists and inversions that upset digestion.” And if it’s you you’re worried about, avoid eating two to three hours before a class, and relax: The anxiety over trying not to fart can make it happen.

You settle next to a rude neighbor You get there an hour early to secure the best mat spot. Five minutes into class, the aggravator arrives, puts his mat an inch from yours, blocks your entire view and wedges his toes in your face. Solution: The teacher should lay down the law. “It’s only fair to have a 15-minute rule, after which the people aren’t allowed in,” says Kim. Barring that, ask them to be careful — and wish them namaste afterward.

It’s Ohio State week at State College. But it has a much different feel than it has in past seasons, considering all that has transpired in the past week and a half. So, with all the emotions still swirling around the Penn State program, the practice field has turned into the best place on campus. At least for the players. “I think a lot of times, with everything that swirls around them, they enjoy coming to practice because it’s the one time they can just kind of be with themselves,” interim coach Tom Bradley said. “No one’s asking them questions; they’re there to play football. And they know they have a job to do this week. We’re still in the hunt for this Big Ten Championship.” The Nittany Lions (8-2) are in the thick of the league championship as they prepare for Ohio State. The Buckeyes (6-4) are no strangers to scandal, after an illegal benefits fiasco forced their head coach out.

On Monday, league commissioner Jim Delany said it was “inappropriate” to keep Joe Paterno’s name on the championship trophy. It has been renamed as the Stagg Championship Trophy. Paterno, of course, was fired last week as head coach at Penn State after fallout from the Jerry Sandusky child sex scandal. “I just think it’s another part of a tragedy that’s occurring,” PSU interim coach Tom Bradley said yesterday. ean Couturier, a long shot to make the Flyers in training camp, has already scored five goals and three assists, while playing primarily a penalty killing, checking role. His plus-9 ratio is 14th in the entire NHL. “He continues to play solid hockey for us at both ends of the ice,” coach Peter Laviolette said. “Defensively, penalty kill, he does the right things. Offensively, he got some opportunities and cashed them in.” Couturier, 18, who was the Flyers’ first-round draft choice — the team used the pick acquired in the Jeff Carter deal on him — recently spoke

with Metro about his transition to the NHL. Do you still pinch yourself about being in the NHL?

Not really anymore. I’m just trying to think team first and do whatever I can do to help the team win. Since day one of training camp, I tried to take it one day at a time, one game at a time. It’s been going pretty well, so I won’t change my philosophy. Did you expect to play such a key penalty killing and defensive role? And where did you learn that style?

I knew, obviously, coming in as a rookie, I’d have to make my way up. Whatever I can do to help the team, I’ll do my best and

started out pretty well and coach has confidence in me. I’m a bit surprised by that. At the same time, I try to work hard every day and get better. Do you feel you are here to stay? And what is it like for an 18-year-old kid in a new city to be on his own?

You never know ... with the salary cap, things can change. I’m just focusing on right now. I moved in with Danny Briere a couple of weeks ago. Just being around him, learning from him — what he does on and off the ice — is good for me. What was it like watching a shootout loss to the Devils [Nov. 3] and were you hoping you would get a chance?

You try not to think too much when you’re in shootout mode, so I was just enjoying the show. In juniors I’d be the go-to guy. Here, it’s different, I’m still adapting myself and learning. JON MARKS

This weekend we had perhaps the best football player/cheerleader on-field moment since Boise State’s Ian Johnson proposed to his cheerleader girlfriend.

O

f course you remember when Johnson’s Broncos stunned Oklahoma in one of the wildest bowl games of the last decade, but this week an NFL player scored a touchdown and ran to give his girlfriend — a cheerleader on the opposing team — the ball. In the Bills-Cowboys game Sunday, the crowd was stunned by what went down, and the announcers, who apparently don’t read sports blogs, had no clue what was going on. David Nelson plays for the Bills. He’s from Texas and went to the University of Florida. Kelsi Reich is his girlfriend, and she’s a cheerleader for the Cowboys. After Nelson scored he jogged down the sideline toward his girlfriend. The camera operator seemed to know what was up, but the announcers were clueless about the whole thing. Reich hopped on Twitter Sunday and showed everyone the ball, proclaiming she was the “happiest Kelsi girl in the Reich world.”

Uninformed vs. ‘fans’ I lobbied the editor of this space to get in a word about the lurid Penn State scandal. How can I not at least address what is the biggest scandal in the history of college sports? I’ll try to be succinct in my two points on the subject. There are two groups of people chiming in on this sordid tale: Those who have read the 23-page grand jury report (they’re informed), and those who haven’t (they’re uninformed). While the report is detailed, it does not include everyone’s entire testimony. It did contain enough detail to press charges against former Penn State defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky though. At the same time, there are two other groups of people who feel compelled to talk about the topic: college football “fans” and people who have zero connection to the sport besides maybe having heard of Joe Paterno prior to the scandal. A large portion of college football “fans,” for whatever reason, find it hard to believe a coverup could take place. Most of these people have not read the grand jury report. People who live in a world unaware 107,000 people pack Beaver Stadium every game think everyone involved in the scandal knew what was going on and, disgustingly, did nothing. – Jason Raj McIntyre covers athletes off the field and runs the popular blog, The Big Lead.

This was anything but a classic Big 5 game. The La Salle-Villanova matchup last night on the Main Line was plain ugly at times. Missed shots, turnovers and all-around sloppy play were the norm. But in the end, the Wildcats (2-0) made just enough plays to eke out their 10th straight win over the Explorers, 76-69, in overtime. “Big 5 game, I always say that. I say this all the time to the guys. We know anything can happen in these games,� Villanova coach Jay Wright said. Both teams looked impressive in their openers last Friday, with the Wild-

cats routing Monmouth 106-70 and La Salle crushing Lafayette 79-53. But that certainly wasn’t the case in the encore for both teams. The Wildcats committed 14 turnovers by halftime and missed their first 13 three-pointers. They trailed by five with 1:24 left in regulation. When it comes to condominium amenities, private luxury spas seem a long way from such basics as onsite laundry. But the past few years have seen spas become almost as normal an apartment addition as a fully stocked gym and swimming pool. In Manhattan, 515 E. 72nd St. opened its in-house Elements Spa in September, offering residents (and visiting friends and family) everything from massages to nail treatments. part of Extell Developments portfolio. “People are looking for opportunities to socialize and experience quality time with friends and family.” However, Kruysman doesn’t think huge facilities like the Aldyn will become the norm. “It made sense for Extell to do it here. We had the empty space and 700 apartments to share the expense and make it affordable for residents. Generally, developments are going toward studio and one-bedroom apartments with outside

areas where residents can entertain friends, like roof decks and lounges. Smaller developments will remain the norm.”

Amenities are reflected in monthly common charges. Waterfront Square has one-bedroom condos starting at at $275,000 and monthly common charges are $436. Spa prices, however, are comparable to any commercial luxury spa: around $125 for a 60-minute massage.
