CENTER CITY. Occupy Philly protesters were arrested Thursday for a sit-in on the Market Street Bridge as part of a nationwide demonstration. “Throughout the country, we’ve been using bridges and crumbling infrastructure as symbols for leaders to take the actions we’ve been crying out for,” said Jessica Burgan of Fight for Philly. SEPTA officials claim the antiquated system of tokens and paper transfers will be replaced by cuttingedge contactless technology such as debit cards, identification cards and smartphones that customers can continue to add value. The project will be divided into three phases and take three years to complete. It will be rolled out first on buses and trolleys, followed by the Market-Frankford Line and Broad Street Subway, and then the Regional Rail system, officials said. SEPTA cashiers will be redeployed and largely used for customer service, according to General Manager Joe Casey, who added that the new system will lead to cost-saving efficiencies such as ending agreements with third-party ticket agents. “Under the current scenario we don’t expect the need for that,” Casey said. Kenney: Don’t choke on that hoagie Squabbling between Councilmen Jim Kenney and Bill Green walked a line between banter and derision as the two exchanged barbs at a Council meeting. Green was the lone opponent of Kenney’s bill that would ban employers from taking a portion of workers’ tips to cover credit card fees, which eventually passed. “I agree with the policy behind this bill, but I think the bill goes further RIKARD LARMA/METRO

Occupy Philly march
Occupy Philly protesters took over a City Council meeting Thursday afternoon. A group interrupted Council’s agenda by shouting out against the stricter curfew bill, which passed three weeks ago. Some lawmakers left or scrambled to safer positions in the room and though Civil Affairs officers closed in on the protesters, they did not take action against them. When Council tried to call the session back to order, the Occupiers called a “People’s City Council” with its own agenda. Opinion
BLONDELL REYNOLDS BROWN COUNCILWOMAN AT LARGE
LEARNING FROM PENN STATE “All that is required for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.” This simple 18th century quote by Edmund Burke strikes to the core of something that is so very now — the tragedy that is unfolding at my alma mater and former employer, Penn State University.
s a parent of a 15-year-old, I am stricken by the media coverage and its focus. In my eyes, this is not a football story; it is a story of adults who had a duty to protect children and did not. Period. The haze of football has clouded the minds and judgment of so many — be it those at Penn State who flunked their obligation to the most vulnerable amongst us or those who watch from home and offer a few too many excuses. One has to wonder what this tragedy would look like if it were not Penn State football. What if it were the Penn State tennis or lacrosse programs? What if this happened to young girls in an awardwinning dance academy? Would there be public debate over the firing of a dance teacher who knew of child rape for nine years and never called the police? Without the overwhelming devotion that millions share for Penn State football, the narrative of this story would be what it should have been the entire time: a shocking, despicable child sex-abuse story resulting in a massive cover-up thanks to the adults that turned a blind eye.

I
am encouraged by the efforts of state representatives Kevin Boyle and Louise Williams Bishop, who have introduced legislation that strengthens reporting laws that allowed some at the college to technically obey the law while avoiding their moral and human obligation. This week, I introduced legislation that would ensure any city employee who is convicted of committing sexual offenses against minors will be disqualified from receiving their retirement and pension benefits. Although we operate with presumption of innocence, I join a growing chorus of Pennsylvanians that are outraged by the prospect of Coach Sandusky continuing to collect a $58,000 annual taxpayer-funded pension even if convicted. In the end, I hope we all use this tragedy to look within and prioritize what is most important in this life: the health and safety of our children. – Blondell Reynolds Brown is a Philadelphia councilwoman at large. Authorities foil Occupiers’ bid to shut Wall Street
Charged in attempt to assassinate Obama PITTSBURGH. A 21-year-old
man accused of firing shots at the White House last week was charged on Thursday with trying to assassinate U.S. President Barack Obama, though the president was out of town at the time. Oscar Ortega-Hernandez of Idaho appeared in a Pittsburgh court after his arrest on Wednesday at a hotel near Indiana, Pa., according to the U.S. Secret Service. No one was hurt in the shooting on Friday night. Obama and wife, Michelle, were not in Washington at the time. The Secret Service said one bullet broke a White House window but was stopped by protective ballistic glass, and the other round struck the exterior of the building. REUTERS

New York police prevented protesters from shutting down Wall Street on Thursday, arresting at least 177 people in repeated clashes with an Occupy Wall Street rally that drew fewer demonstrators than expected. Hundreds of Occupy Wall Street protesters took to the streets in rainy New York and elsewhere in the United States for a day of action seen as a test of the momentum of the 2month-old grassroots movement against economic inequality. On this album, you do swing wildly between fun and philosophical. I think that’s just part of my character and my personality and my music. I always find a balance. There’s elements for everyone in there. It’s much like myself, as a person. It’s neutral and relatable to different groups of people. It’s not necessarily geared to one demographic. It’s more like the balance of, you get your ‘hood s—, you get your ignorant s—, you get sexy music, you get passionate moments, you get life moments and you get vulnerable moments. I think that’s what makes my music unique. I find a way to incorporate all those things into one song sometimes — or definitely into one project. METRO/PH

W
hen Canadian rapper Drake found out his latest album, “Take Care,” had leaked online a week before its release, he took to Twitter and in a very practical tone wrote to his 4 million followers, “Listen, enjoy it, buy it if you like it...and take care until next time.” This pragmatic response is telling of Drake’s approach. On “Take Care,” he frequently raps about what he observes with a sense of both realism and optimism. This is present most in songs like “We’ll Be Fine” and “HYFR,” where he says, “I learned working with the negatives could make for a better picture.”
Is it just a given that an album will leak before it comes out, or do you actually try to figure out where the leak came from?
Nah. You know, my last album leaked like 28 days before it came out and that was kind of devastating. I don’t necessarily

know how it happened but I feel that if leaks are somewhat contained — like if your album leaks six or seven days before it’s supposed to come out — I never see it as detrimental or that damaging. These songs have many philosophical lines, like “jealousy is just love and hate combined.” Are these the type of things that you stow away for a while, just waiting to find a place where they’ll fit?
Yeah, there are little pieces that I collect over the months, whether it be in passing conversation or from reading or movies. I pull from all kinds of referhis signature harmonica. I think that the record, the way it was, was done already when he was listening to it. Vocally, we had tracked it out, and me and him have these other plans for a record where we sing together.

ences but I make them my own. I try to never directly take a quote verbatim. I try to make it apply to my life or make it work for me. A lot of it is just stuff we think about and talk about amongst each other — like me, 40 [Drake’s collaborator Noah “40” Shebib] and whoever else is in the studio. It just comes from hours of thinking and reflecting on life. I think one of my biggest things is to be quoted. I grew up reading quotes, studying what intelligent people had to say, what wise people had to say, so I think one of my biggest goals in life is just to be a quoted individual, and to be somebody whose words matter. So you would like to see engraved in stone a line like, “You’re a fine motherf— er, back that ass up.”
[Laughs] Well, I mean, I don’t know if that’s going to be quoted. But there’s obviously moments of messing around, and then you have your profound moments. PAT HEALY

he titles of Peter Murphy’s two musical offerings of this year are telling of the singer’s contrasting expressions, the abstract and the concrete. He titled his full length album, “Ninth,” as it is his ninth solo effort without Bauhaus, one of the first gothic rock groups of the 1970s. Straightforward enough. His more recent EP, however, “The Secret Bees of Ninth” is more esoteric in title and approach. The word “secret” pops up a lot in Murphy’s work. This, he says, is with good reason. “There’s always with my work, the unseen oblique undercurrent of, I think you’d call it spirituality,” he says in a voice a few shades darker than his usual deep velvety croak, as he is recovering from bronchitis. ”I like to put out words or statements that some-

“I Spit Roses” is one of the strongest songs on “Ninth.” Its title comes from an incident that has been widely cited as the breaking point for Bauhaus when the band reunited a few years ago. Instead of continuing an argument, Murphy gathered a nearby bouquet and, well, consider the title. Have his ex-bandmates reacted? “No, the reaction happened when they were spat upon,” Murphy laughs. “They know what happened. They were there. They didn’t have to react.”

If there’s one thing about heavy metal that’s often overlooked, it’s that the music is as theatrically intense as it is sonically relentless. Take Mastodon, who returned this fall with “The Hunter — a proper follow-up to the Atlanta metalheads’ critically acclaimed “Crack the Skye. Not only does “The Hunter include a download code for a nifty 3-D, interactive “Augmented Reality Experience to play with, but the intricate cover also captures Mastodon’s rich, mythology-themed music. “You have to make a good representation of what’s on the inside on the outside, co-guitarist and singer Bill Kelliher says. “We’re all fans of mythology and dinosaurs and big creatures — the unknown and weird things. All the things that 14-year-old boys are interested in. Kelliher pauses, realizing that he just equated Mastodon with juveniles. He laughs: “We’re all still like kids in that way. As an actual kid growing
Kelliher of Mastodon is on the far right. Inset, the “mythology and dinosaurs and big creatures he talks about are all in one on the cover.
On the ‘Hunt’ Artwork aside, it’s the music that galvanized critics to high praise when “The Hunter emerged. “We’re doing the best we can, says Kelliher. “We had a month before we left for a European tour. I didn’t think we were ready to go into the studio, but lo and behold, all of a sudden we had this amazing f—ing record. It was an outpouring of creativity.

Revisiting the original Thanksgiving meal When you carve the bird next week, don’t forget to thank the Native Americans Our nation’s first people knew good eats This year, let’s give it up for the originators of our favorite meal of the year: the Native Americans. “Most all of the foods that we associate with Thanksgiving are Native American foods,” says Beverly Cox, the co-author of the recently-reissued “Spirit of the Harvest: North American Indian Cooking.” “Sweet potatoes, corn (like cornbread stuffing), the turkey (a native animal to the Americas), cranberries, green beans, pumpkin pie — pumpkins originated in the Americas as well — virtually our whole dinner came from the Indians.” And while we celebrate Thanksgiving just once a year, in earlier times, giving thanks was a regular occurrence. “Thanksgiving ceremonies, for most Native American tribes, were very much a part of their lives,”
“Some 70 percent of the foods eaten in the world today originated in the Americas. Anyone who’s interested in food is interested in American Indian food.” COX
she continues. “There were Thanksgiving ceremonies periodically throughout the year to punctuate the different harvests. There would be a Thanksgiving ceremony for the first buffalo, or the first salmon that were caught — they’d treat it with a great ceremony to thank the salmon for giving themselves to feed the people.” So before you stuff your face this year, we recom-

Inside the mind of Woody Allen Only one filmmaker has had the privilege of giving the legendary director the documentary treatment We quizzed Robert Weide on how he made it happen At 76, director Woody Allen is still reaching new heights in his 42 years as a filmmaker. With a staggering 47 films under his belt, Allen could easily be installed in the Mt. Rushmore of American filmmakers alongside Martin Scorsese, Steven Spielberg and Oliver Stone. But until now, Allen has never allowed a documentary to be made about his work. The man who finally convinced him was Robert Weide. As Allen’s most recent release, “Midnight in Paris” becomes his biggest box office success, PBS airs “Woody Allen: A Documen-

tary” on “American Masters.” Metro asked Weide how he got Allen to relent. Woody Allen has famously never let a film be made about him. How did you do it?
His reluctance to this kind of thing over the years has not been based so much on his fear that somebody would do something outside of his control. I think his problem with it has always been his self-deprecating streak, where he just doesn’t understand how anyone would be interested in doing a documentary on him or why anyone would
be interested in watching it. He and I actually had a $10 bet, which I need to collect on. When he met me, I could never get [this film] financed. And then once I did, his thing was, “No one’s going to put this on the air.” Of course, “American Masters” jumped at it. Now his thing is, “Well, no one’s going to watch it.” His romantic relationships with Diane Keaton and Mia Farrow are epic in the public consciousness. Did you have a hard time getting as much info as you wanted from them?
No. That stuff is of mini-
The first installment of “Woody Allen: A Documentary” airs Sunday at 9 p.m. on PBS.
Q&A Because his films are so personal, Woody Allen fans may feel they know him. What will this documentary reveal that we didn’t know? This guy has a work ethic like nobody else I’ve seen. By the time one film comes out, he’s already shooting the next film. I tried to round out the picture as much as I can. It’s not a psychological study; but when you look at the arc of his life and his career, I think it puts a few things into perspective.
mal interest to me. We do hear a little bit about him and Diane Keaton and Keaton talks about how she had a crush on him right from the beginning. Then with Mia he talks about the genesis of the relationship. Then I deal with what lead to their breakup. ... But I covered that to the extent that I had to because it is part of his narrative. I tried to deal with it honestly and give the information that I thought would cover it. HEIDI PATALANO

Payne’s slow-burning ramble COURTESY OF FOX SEARCHLIGHT PICTURES
‘The Descendants’ is rich in storytelling and character but doesn’t move fast enough to keep things exciting For some, though, that’s a winning combination ‘The Descendants’ Director: Alexander Payne Cast: George Clooney, Matthew Lillard, Beau Bridges Rating: R Grade:
Don’t mess with these two: Playing father and daughter, George Clooney and Shailene Woodley are on a serious fact-finding mission.
Review
Epic family entertainment “Happy Feet Two” Director: George Miller Cast: Elijah Wood, Robin Williams, Sofia Vergara Rating: PG Grade:
The original “Happy Feet” and its sequel don’t look
The director of “Sideways” and “Election” is not one for the predictable story arc. While his films don’t exactly ramble, there’s never any clue as to where the story is going. Some people love that. But the lifelike nature of that approach can take all the fun out of watching it. Payne relies on the richness of the story to keep your interest. That doesn’t
always work. In “The Descendants,” George Clooney plays a Hawaiian land baron coping with a wife on life support and two young girls he’s never really had to help raise. As he tries to keep the family functioning, he finds out some harsh truths about the secret life his wife had been living. Also, he’s in the midst of a heated family debate about selling virgin property to a rich hotel developer. It’s great to see Clooney in a schlubby dad role and,
as usual, he brings on the charm. But the supporting young actresses who play his daughters, Shailene Woodley and Amara Miller, sometimes outshine him in comedic moments, which is great to see. Funny and touching, but occasionally plodding and aimless, this film’s treasures often outweigh its troubles. Just don’t expect to be on the edge of your seat. HEIDI PATALANO

Review
Eternal vampire love “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1” Director: Bill Condon Cast: Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson, Taylor Lautner Rating: PG-13 Grade:
Is there really any point to reading a review of a “Twilight” movie? Fans will see it no matter what. Everyone else could care less. Much like other book adaptations like, say, the “Harry Potter” or “The Lord of the
Rings” franchises, it’s not the second or third installment that gets you hooked. The first is the clincher. And so it’s fitting that “Breaking Dawn - Part 1” is fully loaded with as many cheap special effects and unintentionally hilarious melodramatic moments as the very first film and the other two that followed it. It’s like director Bill Condon wants to guarantee us crappy quality, just to keep it consistent. And for that, the fans will be grateful. There’s a whole spectrum of Twihards — from those who relish the camp factor to others who are sincerely dying for that headboardbreaking scene (forbidden vampire sex!). There’s no reason to believe they won’t all embrace this one for its awe-inspiring
Chess on your honeymoon? Really? These two are so boring.
strangeness. Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart) is again in peril when after her wedding to vampire Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson), she
finds herself almost instantly pregnant. Since this baby is a special vampirehuman hybrid, it’s destroying her from the inside so that eventually, she begins
to resemble the Crypt Keeper. Then there’s wolfshifter Jacob Black (Taylor Lautner) who must fend off the rest of his pack, who believe the hybrid baby is a threat to them. Same stuff, different multimillion dollar-earning movie. There are elements to this story which are too ridiculous to comprehend. There’s a teen-baby love connection, there’s wolves fighting each other in their brains, there’s the fact that these crazy kids have to get married at 18 to begin with. Bella moves out of her dad’s house so that she can move in with her new husband in his family’s house? At least Stephenie Meyer was well ahead of “recession-chic” there. HEIDI PATALANO

Lowlights So-awful-it’s-amazing moments in “Breaking Dawn - Part 1”: The CGI wolfpack mind-argue over Bella’s weird baby. Edward’s heartfelt, near-tears description of the night he first has sex with Bella being “the best night of my existence.” Don’t worry, he doesn’t actually call it sex. This is “Twilight,” you remember. When Jasper solemnly utters the word “probably” — just trust us. At our screening the entire theater was cracking up. A violent bloody birth scene, the end of which results in one lone streak of blood across a hospital johnny.

4) ROBERT SINGS!
We met ‘Twilight’ stars Robert Pattinson and Ashley Greene and will never wash our tape recorder again Here’s four facts we learned 1) PATTINSON LOVES JUNK FOOD In “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1,” the fourth in the series, newlyweds Edward (Robert Pattinson) and Bella (Kristen Stewart) finally go all the way. In preparation for the stripped-down honeymoon scene, Pattinson, 25, put in four
“I very rarely exercise and really don’t like going to the gym.” PATTINSON 3) THE BIRTHING SCENE WAS HORRIFIC In this installment — spoiler alert! — Bella becomes pregnant and the baby is half vampire. According to Pattinson and Greene, the birth scene was one of the most memorable during the movie shoot. “The director Bill Condon made some really bloody horror movies early on in his career and we shot it like a straight horror scene,” says Pattinson. “I saw one cut, and if you had added some other music and other sound effects
months of solid work outs. “Because I very rarely exercise and really don’t like going to the gym, I had to make it extreme,” he says. “I had to cut out beer and cut out junk food, which is basically my entire life, and I had to replace that with going to the gym and working out, basically all day, every day. I went to the gym pretty much at four in the morning and worked out for two hours and then went to work and then ran. It was absolutely exhausting.”
you wouldn’t want to watch the screen. They could definitely do a version of this movie for adults only.” Greene remembers the day as one of the most hysterical. “We were nervous and didn’t know how to pull this off. It was so intense. You can’t relate to a baby that is destroying its mother. It translates much better on film and it looks good, but when we were filming it nobody knew what was happening!”
2) GREENE GETS DRAMATIC His co-star Ashley Greene, 24, who plays Edward’s sister Alice, also shows a new side in the movie, albeit a more emotional one. As the Cullens’ especially talented psychic, Alice is haunted by frightening premonitions.
“You will see Alice being emotionally tortured and a little tormented inside. She wants to protect and support Bella and the two emotions are in conflict. That was one of the great things of having a saga that gives you [time] to develop your character,” she says.

“I’m not making a record. ... I record stuff all the time but have no intention to release it. People hate actors who release music so much that the majority of people would hate it just because it exists. It’s too personal for me to dirty it with people’s judgement.” PATTINSON, DENYING RUMORS THAT HE IS GOING TO RELEASE A RECORD
Oh come on, RPatz! How can you neglect the legions of Twihards who would buy three copies each of you doing bird calls if that’s what you felt like doing? We’ll
give the man some time and maybe he’ll come around.

Metro’s Dorothy Robinson shares her take on the world of gossip
Talking points
Cavallari takes on Kardashians Oh, snap! I’ve never been a super fan of Kristin Cavallari as, really, I’m not too sure what there is to be impressed by. But I might have a change of heart as she totally called out the Kardashians on “The Billy Bush Show” on Wednesday. Here’s the backstory: Life & Style is running a story that Scott Disick, the boyfriend and baby daddy of Kourtney Kardashian, fooled around with Cavallari before hooking up with Kourtney. Kristin says this is “100 percent not true” and accused the Kardashians for making news where there is none. (The Kardashians flaming gossip rumors? Never!) “What convenient timing for them. With their show premiering next week and with everything that’s going on for Kim, I feel like they’re trying to take the heat off her,” she told Bush. “When there’s a big story like that, they always call you and ask if you want to comment and clearly none of them denied it, so it’s very — it’s really disrespectful to me. ... I’m in a committed relationship. It’s disrespectful to me and Jay [Cutler] and I think it just says a lot about their character.” Um, everything that has happened in the past year with the Kardhasians says a lot about their character, Cavallari tells don’t you it like it is. think?

Martha Stewart doesn’t freak out about Christmas
While the rest of world plans on upping their Xanax intake to handle the stress of the holidays, Martha Stewart doesn’t even break a sweat. But, really though, was there ever any doubt? While working the red carpet on Wednesday night at the Fourth Annual Martha Stewart Center for Living at Mount Sinai Gala, which honored music impresario Clive Davis, the domestic diva was all smiles and totally at ease while discussing her plans for the holidays. She said the thing

Ashton’s tweeting [about Penn State] was the last straw,” a source says. Of course, the retreat also gave the couple a chance to address their marital difficulties stemming from Kutcher’s infidelity. “Things have been very strained,” the source adds, “[but] they’re trying to figure things out.” And figure it out they did. How sad.

might not be going away so fast, as reports have surfaced that Mariah Yeater is not actually dropping her paternity suit, having found new lawyers to represent her. But first she needs to do some cleanup work. TMZ has published text messages Yeater sent to a friend suggesting her baby’s father is someone other than Bieber. “pleeeease ERASE ALL MESSAGES from my mom where she says Tristyn is Robbies Son,” one message reads, while a second says: “Ill kick u when we get paid im trusting you pleeeease.” Her “friends” are fiscally savvy; they realized TMZ would pay for text messages before Yeater could.

Sorry, Occupy. This week belonged to ‘Twilight’ While some people in tents were being kicked out of them, others were setting them up — and these vampire lovers were allowed to stay put. Until the reason they were all there — “Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1” — actually opened, that is. Here is the vamp-crazed madness that happened this week surrounding every Twihard’s most anticipated film of the year.
1. While Occupy camps across the country were being torn down, a new camp was set up on Sunday in Los Angeles — this time by Twilight fans who waited in line for the premiere. 2. At the U.K. premiere on Wednesday, fans were all smiles as they tried to take a photo with star Robert Pattinson. 3. On Sunday, this “Team Edward” fan was seen at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles, Calif., waiting to get in line for the premiere of the movie, which happened Friday. 4. The ultimate “Team Edward” fan arrived at the Los Angeles premiere in a wedding dress, all ready to marry the love of her life — Robert Pattinson. Well, make that
his cut-out. 5. At the same event, Edward Cullen fanatics displayed a “Great Wall of Rob.” 6. Hordes of fans at the U.K. premiere in London on Wednesday were also delighted as they snapped photos with Taylor Lautner.

ccording to recent opinion polls, most Americans agree that financial criminals on Wall Street and corrupt politicians in Washington have conspired to enrich an already wealthy minority at the expense of the working classes. But as the Occupy movement hits its second month, many still view protesters in negative terms, using words like “lazy,” “ignorant” and “smelly.” As the Daily News reports: “Polling shows the public supports the message of the Occupy Wall Street movement even if people have reservations about the encampments themselves.” What gives? Sadly, a lot of good people see protesters as unwashed hippie remnants of the ’60s counterculture revolution. Perception is

We all have a stake in solving the money-in-politics problem whether or not we appreciate the appearance — or smell — of our economic allies. Revolution makes for strange bedfellows; let’s get together before we’re all screwed.

Niners face first ‘chalk’ test The 49ers have an 8-1 record. Big deal. At least one or two teams get off to a start like that every year. The real feat Jim Harbaugh's team has accomplished is racing out to a 80-1 record against the spread. This is the longest un-
beaten ATS streak to start a season since 1980, according to Covers.com. That’s because the Niners don’t play the style that inflates lines. They are a run-heavy, defensive-oriented team. That’s not the style people bet on. So lines stay low and the Niners cover.

Vick injury could force Eagles’ hand Mike Vick was clearly in the minority last week, when he told reporters that “Lord willing, maybe we can end up 10-6.” But, after missing practice Wednesday and Thursday, it’s looking like that unenviable task will fall on the broad shoulders of Vince Young. While Andy Reid hasn’t anointed Young as Sunday’s starter, he has been taking the bulk of the first-team reps in practice. “It’s not about me. I want to go out there and lead the guys to a victory,” Young said. And victories have been hard to come by. With a 3-6 record — and constant rumors surrounding Reid’s job security — the Eagles know they must run the table for any shot at the postseason. In fact, it might put added pressure on Vick to strap on the Superman cape and go out there with broken ribs. It certainly wouldn’t be the first time for Vick, who played in Week 3, after suffering a concussion the previous week. “He’s a tough man and I’m always optimistic with him,” offensive coordinator Marty Mornhin-

Flutie strikes! Buffalo Bills coach Wade Phillips benched QB Doug Flutie before the 1999 playoffs, despite the fact he had gone 10-5. The Flutieless Bills then lost to Tennessee thanks to the controversial “Music City Miracle.” The Bills have never returned to the playoffs. And any team that has employed Phillips since then has suffered incredible misfortune. The Houston Texans, where Phillips is the defensive coordinator, is the latest victim of the Curse of Flutie. Houston was enjoying the greatest season in its history: a franchise-best 7-3 record, on pace for its first playoff appearance and the AFC’s No. 1 seed, and the top scoring differential in the AFC (+107), a reliable indicator of Super Bowl potential. But on Monday we learned that the team had lost Pro Bowl-caliber QB Matt Schaub for the season. Some call it coincidence. We call it another triumph for the dreaded Curse of Flutie.

back leads the NFC with 906 rushing yards, yet inexplicably saw just 14 touches in last week’s loss to Arizona. Even Mornhinweg admitted that the team could have leaned more heavily on McCoy. “They were playing us with a bunch of one-onones and there were plen-
ty of opportunities there,” Mornhinweg said. “I don’t want to act a little defensive or anything, but yeah we had some possibilities there. We could have gone to him a couple more times.” MIKE GREGER

RB Ahmad Bradshaw (foot) questionable. THE SCOOP: We would love to break down the spreads and what they mean for this game, but that would be all dependent on who plays quarterback. If the line isn’t off-the-board you will see the Giants as a small favorite. It appears like Mike Vick won’t play with two fractured ribs, but we don’t know for sure. If Vick doesn’t play you have to like the Giants here, at home, against a division rival they would love to put down for the season. PICK: Giants

QUARTERBACK CARNAGE Fantasy sports
ADAM LEVITAN
Wide receivers are the toddlers of the fantasy world. They can’t do anything for themselves and like to complain a lot.
ALEVITAN@METRO.US
So after a week that saw a fistful of quarterbacks go down with injuries, there’s reason for concern. After all, a wideout is worthless if his quarterback can’t get him the ball. Should we be selling?
Bad for Bowe NFL news
With Matt Cassel done for the year, the Chiefs are

turning to Tyler Palko. Yikes. Palko is a former undrafted free agent, possesses a weak arm and has poor size. These are all major red flags for an offense that was already skewed toward the run. Sell Dwayne Bowe while you can as his talent can’t overcome this.
RB, Broncos Knowshon Moreno (knee) is done for the year and the Broncos run the ball 800 times per game.
GETTY IMAGES
The hierarchy at wideout is always changing. These three are good bets:
2
Before we write off Matt Leinart, let’s remember his credentials coming out of college. He’s got a big arm and he’s willing to use it. Considering Andre Johnson is perhaps the best allaround receiver in the league, he’ll sustain highend WR2 value.
If Vince Young ends up starting in place of Michael Vick, look for lots of rollouts and short passes underneath. Give Brent Celek a boost, but don’t expect DeSean Jackson to finally break out. Young figures to play it conservative.

DeMarco Murray has earned the starting job and he’ll keep it. Even though Felix Jones (ankle) is nearly healthy, the Cowboys have confirmed Murray will remain the workhorse. The rookie will sustain RB1 value the rest of the way.

Vince Young QB, Eagles Michael Vick is hurt and won’t push it once the Eagles are mathematically eliminated. Young runs.
3 Dwayne Bowe’s arrow is pointing down.
Antonio Brown, WR, PIT — Hines Ward has been demoted, locking Brown into most two-wide sets. He’s a playmaker. Brandon Lloyd, WR, STL — With Tim Tebow, Lloyd would have been a bust. With Sam Bradford/Josh McDaniels, he’s a beast. Victor Cruz, WR, NYG — Playing out of the slot, Cruz has become Eli Manning’s favorite target in key situations.

Phillies re-sign backup catcher The Phillies signed Brian Schneider to a one-year contract Thursday, according to GM Ruben Amaro, Jr. The deal is reportedly worth $800,000. The 34-year-old catcher made 36 starts last season while serving as the primary backup for Carlos Ruiz. Schneider hit .176 with two home runs and nine RBIs in 41 games. He ranks seventh among active catchers in most runners thrown out, with 194.
The Phillies went 19 19-0 with Brian Schneider as their
starting catcher from May 7 through Sept. 6. In other news, Charlie Manuel finished fourth in voting for the NL’s Manager of the Year. He has finished sixth or higher since 2005. Also, bench coach Pete Mackanin didn’t get the Cubs job, and he is no longer a candidate for the Red Sox gig. METRO
