Bengal, center, is director of the PSPCA’s Human Law Enforcement unit — the subject of a new Nat Geo Wild documentary.

When the Pennsylvania SPCA and Philadelphia police busted a dogfighting ring in April, they raided three properties, arrested 17 people ranging in age from 19 to 42 and seized 18 dogs — as well as equipment like treadmills, vitamins and steroids. What wasn’t reported is that the raid came after nearly a year’s worth of surveillance and investigation by an undercover PSPCA Humane Law Enforcement team assembled in 2010. The April bust, which made national headlines, is typical of the extensive web of people involved in the brutal sport. “There’s a whole network out there that engages in the activity, from training animals for

the culmination of a yearlong Blue Ribbon Commission study of Archdiocesan elementary, special education and high schools. Its findings include declining Church attendance and do-

The crime fighters investigate tips, conduct surveillance and pose as criminals in every role, from animal purchasers to fighters. “When you’re dealing with animal fighting, it’s almost like dealing with narcotics,” Bengal said. “When you have an undercover unit you’re trying to capture buyers, sellers — that kind of thing.” The first episode premieres Saturday on Nat Geo Wild.

Woman seeks death benefit from Cozen O’Connor DOJ has declared federal marriage act unconstitutional The Department of Justice has ruled the Defense of Marriage Act unconstitutional in response to a Pennsylvania case disputing whether a woman’s same-sex partner was entitled to her death benefits. Pa. Judge Darnell Jones II, who gave the Department of Justice and other parties in Cozen O’Connor v. Tobits a chance to weigh in before ruling, will consider all the arguments on March 12. The implications could be far-reaching for LGBT Pennsylvanians. The Defense of Marriage Act is a 1996 law limiting the federal definition of marriage to a union be-

Obama pitches plan for military austerity The president has come out with a new military strategy in light of a call for budget cuts Republicans accuse him of all manner of crimes President Barack Obama presented a revamped U.S. military strategy for an era of budget cuts that pledges to emphasize Asia and space and cyber capabilities while preserving missions such as defeating al-Qaeda. The new strategy outlined on Thursday calls for investments in cybersecurity to defeat electronic attacks in expanded spacebased intelligence platforms and for “developing a new stealth bomber.” At the same time, it raises the possibility that U.S. “deterrence goals can be achieved with a smaller nuclear force” and says the U.S. presence in Europe “must evolve,” without

Republican lawmakers, in e-mailed statements, criticized the strategy from different angles — as cutting too much, doing too little to root out waste or putting the U.S. nuclear deterrent at risk. Representative Howard P. “Buck” McKeon of California, chairman of the House Armed Services Committee, said Obama has packaged “a retreat from the world.” “An honest and valid strategy for national defense can’t be founded on the premise that we must do more with less, or even less with less,” he said in a statement. t’s not fair. These folks want to be the president of the United States, not a Jeopardy champion. But ... and this is a big caveat ... it is worth noting that candidates are rarely torpedoed by a single gaffe. Or even two or three. What does them in is a pattern of mistakes that suggests a certain overall sloppiness of thought, inattention to detail, or a shaky grasp of facts. Bachmann, while certainly an intelligent, talented politician, had a few too many of those moments. And she won’t be the last to do so. Maybe they were honest mistakes, blown out of proportion. n one sketch during the new season of “Portlandia,” the characters played by Fred Armisen and Carrie Brownstein decide to watch a single episode of “Battlestar Galactica” before they head out to a friend’s birthday party. Unable to pull themselves away from the TV after 45 minutes, they miss the party, end up devouring the first season, and over a few consecutive days, the whole series. Jobs are lost, bills go unpaid and they stop getting up to use the bathroom. At one point Brownstein tiredly says, “I a little bit feel like I have a bladder infection, but I’m just going to get antibiotics after the next episode.” This scene is typical of the comedic duo’s adoration of the absurd, and is one that could easily apply to viewers of their show. The first season recently began streaming on Netflix, and the second season pre-

Face the music One of the things that sets “Portlandia” apart from Armisen’s other comedy outlet, “Saturday Night Live,” is the way the show handles musical guests. On “Portlandia,” musical guests don’t sing, they act. “Sometimes when musicians do things like this, they come at it with just a

hat makes the comedy hit so hard is Armisen and Brownstein’s ability to create relatable situations that go awry. He says the pair are able to get so ridiculous because almost half of the show is improvised. “We film so much stuff,”

he says. “We could do a whole season of what we didn’t use.” Armisen says that a large chunk of that unused footage is he and Brownstein ruining the scenes by laughing uncontrollably at what the other one has come up with on the spot. He is quick to give away the credit for the finished product. “We’re not part of the editing process,” he explains, “because those guys are geniuses.” Armisen says relinquishing that authority is liberating because every time he watches the edits, he finds himself saying, “Oh my gosh, I never thought that we wouldn’t need that.” “That’s a really weird part of the process, where you think you’re in control, but you know it’s good that you’re not in control.” PAT HEALY

Brownstein and Vedder enjoy a picnic.

slightly different way of playing things than a comedian, and that’s just interesting,” says Armisen. Season 2 cameos include Eddie Vedder, Joanna Newsom and guitarists from the Sex Pistols and The Smiths. Since Brownstein is most well-known for her role as a singer and guitarist in the bands Sleater-Kinney and Wild Flag, and Armisen got his start in show business as a

drummer in a band called Trenchmouth, do they ever try to arrange jam sessions with these stars? “I feel like every time I turn to someone and start talking to them, the conversation always turns to, ‘We’re going to Australia,’” says Armisen. “Maybe they’re just avoiding wanting to make any connections, like, ‘I’m going to be wayyy out of the country.’”

Real-life inspiration

‘That guy does exist!’ Armisen is probably best known to mainstream audiences for his portrayal of President Obama on “Saturday Night Live.” The characters he plays on “Portlandia” are heightened versions of everyday people and self-serious hipster types (think feminist bookstore owners and bike messengers) that are so spot-on they feel like they must come from an arsenal of his own acquaintances. Not so, says Armisen. “It’s a weird thing, where it happens afterward,” he says. “I thought it was just in my imagination, but then I’ll drive around Portland and totally, straight-up, see guys like that. So it’s like, ‘Oh yeah, that guy does exist!’”

t’s that time of year when everyone is making resolutions — even television networks. Midseason offers programmers another shot at tweaking their schedules and wooing audiences with new programming. So I’ve headed to Pasadena, Calif., where the semi-annual Television Critics Association press tour is taking place, to check out the new offerings and see if the networks’ promises of fresh, exciting shows are truly long-term commitments or doomed to be forgotten two weeks from now. For live reports from the TCA press tour, fol-

low me on Twitter @amberatmetro and visit www.metro.us/tv. Here are a few TCA highlights that I’ll be covering: “Smash” There hasn’t been a show with this much pre-premiere buzz since “Glee” — and I’m not just saying that because this, too, is a musiccentric series. I’ll be talking to star Katharine McPhee and the rest of the cast in this Steven Spielberg-produced drama, which details the opening of a Broadway musical, on Friday. (Premieres Feb. 6 at 10 p.m. on NBC)

Set visits: “Suburgatory” and “New Girl” Funny ladies have been the toast of the new TV season, and two of my favorite female-centric sitcoms are opening their sets to TV critics on Monday. (“Suburgatory” airs Wednesdays at 8:30 p.m. on ABC. “New Girl” airs Tuesdays at 9 p.m. on Fox.) Vice presidents new and old Al Gore, Current TV Chairman and Co-Founder — and, of course, our former vice president — will speak to critics about the state of cable news on Jan. 13. Julia Louis-Dreyfus, meanwhile, just plays the vice president on TV. Still, she’ll be talking about the gig and her new HBO comedy, “Veep,” on Jan. 13. (“Veep” will premiere in April on HBO.) Is that your final answer? It may not be the end of the world ... yet But as we begin 2012, the year the Mayan calendar ends, we ask a few celebrities what they would do on Judgment Day Jamie Bell, actor What’s your last meal? It would definitely be a meat dish. I love meat. It’s so bad, but damn, it’s pretty good. Maybe just cook a whole cow. What is the last song you’ll sing in the shower? Maybe “Let it Be” [by The Beatles]. Or you could go out on something completely ironic like [the Monty Python song] “Always Look on the Bright Side of Life.” What is the last movie you’ll watch? I would love to say something really influential, about the goodness of humanity, but it would probably be “Jurassic Park.”

Wiz Khalifa, rapper What is the last song you’ll sing in the shower? “Save The Children” by Marvin Gaye. What is the last movie you’ll watch and with whom? “The Notebook” with Amber Rose. What is the one luxury item you’ll bring with you to the New World? My laptop. Who is the one fellow celebrity with whom you’ll want to travel to the New World? Amber.

Mindy Kaling, writer, producer, actress on ‘The Office’ What would your last meal be? My last meal would be probably Ethiopian food, my favorite kind of food. It’s super heavy and I love it.

What is the last song you’ll sing in the shower? “Countdown” by Beyonce. What is the last movie you would watch and with whom? The last movie I would watch would be “You’ve Got Mail” and I’d watch it with my mom. One luxury item you’d bring with you to the new world? In the post-apocalyptical world where it’s like Cormac McCarthy’s “The Road” and everyone is dirty and disgusting, I’d bring a Judith Leiber clutch, like in my rags. One celebrity you’d want to travel with to the new world? Aaron Sorkin

Adam Carolla, comedian What would your last meal be? I’d go to the busiest restaurant, whose kitchen was most backed up, and then I would change my order three or four times. I’d stretch it out. I’d eat lobsters raised on Snickers bars then dipped in a buttermilk substance mixed with tempura sauce and then deep-fried. With heroin sprinkled on it. What is the last song you’ll sing in the shower?

There’s two ways you can go: You can go with one of my favorites like John Hiatt or Elvis Costello and hear something you really want to hear. Or, a better approach would be to take a horrible song like “Maneater” by Hall & Oates and want to die. What is the last movie you’ll watch and with whom? I would pick a long movie. There’s a theme here, I want to stretch it out. I’d watch “Goodfellas” with Joe Pesci and make sure he got drunk and have him re-enact his scenes. I’d have Ray Liotta there, too, and make them do their crazy laughs for me. What is the one luxury item you’ll bring with you to the New World? Wait a minute, this is stretching the boundaries of reality. You can’t transport items. You’re dead. There’s no taking anything with you. METRO

Jolie takes on the subject of war.

t the L.A. premiere for her debut as a writer-director of the Bosnian war drama “In the Land of Blood and Honey,” Angelina Jolie made it clear that the film is hard to watch — intentionally so — and warned the audience that for two hours they would be asking themselves when it would end. While that may seem like a risky gambit for a commercial release, Jolie insists there was no other way to present it. “I personally feel [that] if you’re watching a film about war, you should get a sense of what it’s really like. So we tried to make it authentic,” she says. The war in question — represented onscreen with the unlikely love affair be-

tween a Serbian officer (Goran Kostic) and a Bosnian refugee (Zana Marjanovic) — was particularly atrocity-filled, and Jolie pulled few punches in depicting it. “You just can’t soften this kind of war,” she says. “And the reality is the four-and-a-half-hour cut was a lot worse. Some of the hardest things were actually cut out because some people just really could not handle it.” What’s possibly most jarring about the film, though, are the details woven in to remind audiences that this all happened in the last 20 years right in Western Europe’s backyard. I didn’t know enough. So I think we all should feel that way about this particular war — and

we should wonder what it is that we’re going to look back on in 15 years and feel that we also didn’t do, that’s happening today.” While Jolie’s name and profile certainly bring a certain prestige to the project, that didn’t necessarily mean she had unlimited resources. And shooting every scene twice — both in the native regional language and in English, in the hopes of wooing subtitle-averse distributers — only put more pressure on the budget and schedule. “It was very fast. We had 41 days and I think $12 million, and we had three and a half years of war and many different seasons to recreate,” Jolie says. “I found out how much snow costs. I’d say, ‘I

Russell Brand just can’t tell a lie Katy Perry was reportedly blindsided by Russell Brand’s divorce filing, but

according to sources close to the singer there was plenty of evidence he was losing interest, says Us Weekly. “There were so many times when he wasn’t there,” a source says,

The Bronzer Age? Brand

This just needs to be said: Is Clay Aiken always wearing foundation? Bronzer? And is that fake beard hair? Am I crazy in thinking he always looks like a ginger Real Doll? What is going on? OK, sorry. Tangent over. Here he is, filming last year for the new season of “Celebrity Apprentice,” which premieres Feb. 15.

offering the last night of Perry’s tour in November as an example: “He was totally uninterested and seemed annoyed he was there. I don’t think he sat through one song.” And then there was Brand’s response to her “Saturday Night Live” hosting stint in December. Perry reportedly begged Brand to appear in a skit on the episode, but he declined and stayed in L.A. instead. And after it aired? “He told her that she wasn’t that funny,” the source says. “That really hurt.” But, um, he was right? It’s hard to sit through a Katy Perry concert and she was Nancy Kerrigan-esque terrible on “SNL.” Now, if only she would hit him with a taste of his own medicine and tell him to buy a bigger pair of pants.

Saldana getting close apparently had some truth to them, as the pair were spotted getting very cozy at a 1940sthemed New Year’s Eve party in Bel Air, according to Us Weekly. “They were making out for 20 minutes,” a source says. And while they may be officially keeping each other company, Saldana is reportedly hesitant to let things get too serious too soon. “They’re dating, but Zoe just left an engagement,” says the source. “She’s just looking

The popular taco and burrito truck is waiting out the winter months in a more permanent space

Tom McCusker rolled his Honest Tom’s Taco Truck onto the local food truck scene in April 2009, offering breakfast and lunch tacos at Aviator Park, Clark Park and on the Drexel University campus. But the truck evolved into a restaurant in late December when Honest Tom’s Taco Shop opened its doors in West Philadelphia. “The winters were really rough — it was snowy and very cold,” McCusker says about the two winters his staff

spent shivering in the truck. “Business lagged because of the weather, and the college kids also went away for breaks. Having the shop is so much easier. We have a home of our own and refrigeration!” Open daily from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m., Honest Tom’s offers breakfast tacos and burritos as well as locally roasted GreenStreet Coffee for the early morning crowd. The lunch and dinner menu currently boasts rice and bean, pork, chick-

en, sweet potato or beef tacos and burritos. “Burritos and tacos are my favorite foods, but there was nowhere around where you could get them,” says McCusker — resident of Powelton Village — about the decision to set up shop in West Philly. “And Clark Park has been so good to us, so we wanted to keep it in the neighborhood.” ELLIOTT SHARP

No lie: Honest Tom’s (261 S. 44th St., 215-620-1851) is serving up sweet potato tacos — and now offers delivery.

Truck devotees, don’t fret: Honest Tom’s Taco Truck will still serve breakfast at the Clark Park Farmer’s Market on Saturday mornings, and McCusker plans to return to his previous spots once the weather improves.

The scoop

Player to watch

Defense and defense Texans finished second in yards allowed (285.7) and fourth in points (17.4). Meanwhile, Bengals ranked seventh in yards (316.2) and points (20.2). Expect Houston to rely heavily on NFL’s second-best ground game.

Andy Dalton, QB, CIN Rookie of the Year candidate if not for Cam Newton. Dalton, recovering from flu-like symptoms, is the first rookie signal-caller taken outside of the first round to start all 16 games and make the postseason.

Giant expectations Which Giants team shows up? The one that lost four straight in the heart of the season? Or the one that won its last two to get in? In NY, they’re talking about Eli Manning dialing up that 2007-08 Super Bowl magic. We’ll buy in — for a round.

Jason Pierre-Paul, DE, NY On a Giants team loaded with elite pass-rushers, Pierre-Paul is emerging as their most disruptive. The second-year pro had 16.5 sacks on the season, with six in his final four games. And it doesn’t hurt having Justin Tuck on other side.

Respect the logo Steelers could have been the AFC’s No. 2 seed, if not for two losses to BALT. They enter banged-up — RB Rashard Mendenhall is out — but their defense, No. 1 overall (8th vs. run, 1st vs. pass), should carry them.

Tim Tebow, QB, DEN After going 7-1 as the starter initially, the “winner” has struggled recently throwing four picks and coughing it up three times as Denver backed its way in after losing three straight. MIKE GREGER

Manning is sort of clutch in the postseason.

The big game

at LIONS 10-6

SAINTS 13-3

SAT., 8 P.M. (NBC) Line: DET +10 Last meeting (Dec. 4, 2011): Saints 31, Lions 17 Pick: Saints 45, Lions 27

The Big Easy factor Lions put up a fight early in the teams’ Dec. 4 meeting, a 31-17 Saints win. But Drew Brees and Co. are clicking on all cylinders now. Besides, they enter unbeaten at home, including a 4-0 night-game record — beating opponents by an average of 41-16.

Flyers pay ’Hawks back — kind of OK, so it wasn’t the Stanley Cup Finals but the Orange and Black got a measure of revenge Thursday night with a 5-4 win over Chicago. James van Riemsdyk netted the game-winner on a power play, with 33 ticks left in regulation. Van Riemsdyk (2), Scott Hartnell, Claude Giroux and Jakub Voracek all lit the lamp. METRO
