Kin face alleged killer after daughter’s funeral Chelsea man, 59, pleads not guilty to stabbing woman in heart 20-year-old woman’s funeral held hours before arraignment Authorities say the two had ‘ongoing relationship,’ but few details Hours after they attended the funeral of their 20year-old daughter, the parents of Jessica Cormier went to court to face her accused killer. Clarence Earl Berry, 59, was arraigned on a first-degree murder charge at Malden District Court yesterday. He pleaded not guilty and Judge Dominic Paratore ordered him held without bail. A funeral service for Cormier, 20, was held at the Smith Funeral Home in Chelsea yesterday after-
noon. Berry’s hearing was held about two hours later. On Jan. 3, Cormier was found stabbed twice in the foyer of her Everett home by her mother who heard screaming and came down to see what happened, according to authorities and the Globe. One of the stab wounds pierced Cormier’s heart. Berry is a formerly homeless man who is now staying at an apartment as part of transitional program, according to the Globe.
“This is a horrific and senseless case in which we allege that the defendant fatally stabbed the young victim numerous times, causing her death.” MIDDLESEX DISTRICT ATTORNEY GERRY LEONE
Authorities searched Berry’s apartment and seized evidence that later tested positive for human blood, according to authorities. He was arrested Friday afternoon. Prosecutors claim Berry and Cormier had an ongoing relationship but did not say specifically how they knew each other. Berry is due back in court next month. CHRISTINA WALLACE

But last week, after only half the season, she left the show. The split, she told Metro, had to do with cankles. “It was like the relationship that looks perfect on paper — and when you got there it just was all wrong,” she told us over the phone.

Get kids to eat their veggies Your child may munch more vegetables at meals if he can choose the ones he wants, suggests a new study from Spain. When kids ages 4 to 6 were given a choice of green beans or zucchini at lunch, they ate twice as many veggies as those who didn’t get to pick. Feeling a sense of control over what’s on their plate probably motivated them to eat more, say researchers. Try this at home Create a veggie bar of cher-

Kids also liked when their entrees were placed in the front part of the plate in a fun design. Significance: Children don’t like boring meals! An easy remedy for picky eaters: Get creative.
Location of study: U.S. Results: A new report from the CDC claims that there are more twins being born in the United States than ever before. The study found that in 2009, one out of every 30 U.S.-born babies was a twin, compared with one out of every 53 babies in 1980. Significance: The increase is likely due to more older women having children, and the burgeoning use of fertility drugs.
Gestational diabetes and ADHD Study subjects: 212 preschool children Location of study: U.S. Results: An ongoing study at Queens College at the City University of New York found that children whose mothers had gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) had a two-fold risk of ADHD diagnosis at age 6. The study also found that GDM was greater among low socioeconomic status (SES) families than among higher SES families. Significance: Children exposed to both GDM and low SES had lower cognitive development than those not exposed. LINDA CLARKE

U.S. jobs, the Institute of Supply Management said last Tuesday that U.S. manufacturing activity made gains in December. Manufacturing is the toughest team to beat, and results in the greatest gain in stats. Wouldn’t that be called a winning streak? Wouldn’t you say of that team, “We’re goin’ to the Super Bowl baby!” Perhaps you should punt — oh, wait, with the current Republican lineup — y’all already did.

Sadly, his warnings fell on deaf ears. KELLY DONNOE, VIA E-MAIL

Emmanuel College’s Graduate Programs in Biopharmaceutical Leadership Prepares Scientists for Industry Management
Scientists working in the biopharmaceutical industry require leadership and management skills that are often not part of their academic preparation. Through a rigorous curriculum, created based on focus groups of biopharmaceutical industry scientists and management experts, Emmanuel College’s Graduate Certificate in Biopharmaceutical Leadership and Master of Science in Management with specialization in Biopharmaceutical Leadership respond to the unique needs of these scientists by providing opportunities to earn an academic, graduate-level credential in management skills for scientists. Below, Adjunct Faculty Member Dr. Nancy Kohl, a retired
Merck scientist who now leads research projects at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, discusses Emmanuel College’s Graduate Programs in Biopharmaceutical Leadership. How do Emmanuel College’s Graduate Programs in Biopharmaceutical Leadership add value to the field? “The biopharmaceutical leadership programs provide leadership and management skills to complement scientists’ technical skills. Most scientists are trained in an academic environment and graduate with excellent technical skills and research experience. Those choosing to work in the industry also require leadership and management skills. Emmanuel College’s Graduate Programs in Biopharmaceutical Leadership seek to fill that gap. The six-course graduate certificate is a one-year, part-time academic
opportunity that addresses critical knowledge skills in leadership, management and business in the biopharmaceutical industry. For those choosing to earn the Master of Science in Management with specialization in Biopharmaceutical Leadership, students begin the five general management courses after completing six biopharmaceutical leadership cohort courses.” How does the biopharmaceutical leadership curriculum allow students to apply concepts practically? “All of the courses in the program make use of relevant case studies taken from the biopharmaceutical environment. This teaching process makes it easy for students to immediately apply what they learn on the job and develop skills that will advance their careers.”
How are the biopharmaceutical leadership course requirements appropriate and relevant to students? “The first three courses in the program focus on leadership and management. The program begins by looking at individuals as leaders and progresses to examining the scientist as a team leader, supplying tools and processes for project and team management. Courses in the second half of the program build on the leadership and management content addressed in the first half and also address business topics unique to the industry, such as aligning business and science, the regulatory approval process and research in today’s global environment.”
degree and certificate are available at Emmanuel’s main campus in Boston by attending class one night each week, or they can be completed online in an asynchronous format.” What biopharmaceutical leadership networking opportunities are available for students? “Emmanuel’s central location, in the heart of the Longwood Medical and Academic Area and adjacent to some of the most respected health care institutions and research centers in the world,
Where and how often do classes take place? “Each course is conducted in a 7-week accelerated format. The
allows the college to form strategic partnerships with leaders in the biopharmaceutical industry. Students come from a variety of Boston-area pharmaceutical and biotechnology institutions, so students have the opportunity to network with fellow students from other companies. In addition, most of the program’s expert instructors have extensive experience at world-renowned biopharmaceutical institutions such as Merck, Novartis, Vertex Pharmaceuticals and AstraZeneca.”

Suffolk Grads Build Skills for Specialized Careers in Criminal Justice
When crime strikes in Lawrence, Mass., Kate Curtis knows it and takes action. Curtis is a crime analyst with the Lawrence Police Department. She looks for patterns of crime in the city and shares her findings with police officers, who work to counter the trends she identifies. A graduate of Suffolk University’s Master of Science in Crime and Justice Studies program, Curtis values the practical training she received at Suffolk. “Based on what I learned in the classroom and during my internship with the Burlington Police Department, I had the skills I needed to land my dream job and make a difference in the community,” she says.
Suffolk’s innovative crime and justice studies program prepares students to be not only practitioners in criminal justice, but also critical thinkers and agents of change in the communities they serve. For instance, students learn how and when to utilize community resources and treatment programs as alternatives to the court system, incarceration, and traditional policing models. Building on a solid foundation in law, criminology, and applied research, students may pursue more focused interests in criminal justice via optional concentrations in Victim Advocacy and in Youth, Crime and Justice.
Real-world insight and hands-on experience are key elements of Suffolk’s program. Seasoned criminal justice practitioners lead many courses, lacing their lessons with examples from their own careers. In addition, students gain meaningful work-related experiences in the program’s internship and practicum placements. Criminal justice graduate students also benefit from work with Suffolk’s renowned research centers. “The Center for Restorative Justice,” program director Donald Morton notes, “links academia to the real world in terms of offenders, crime victims, and members of the community coming together to mediate conflicts.” Graduate students may also gain experience at the Center for Crime and Justice Policy Research, where scholars share extensive expertise in the art and science of conducting basic and applied research. Like Kate Curtis, many Suf-
folk graduates are excelling in specialized areas of criminal justice. Michelle Pherson completed the joint degree program leading to both the MS in Crime and Justice Studies and MS in Mental Health Counseling. She now works with the Department of Justice, Federal Bureau of Prisons, as a sex offender treatment specialist. Dual-degree programs are also available in public administration and in law. Amanda Breen, a 2010 graduate, is a violence intervention advocate at Massachusetts
General Hospital. She provides crisis intervention and support for youths who arrive at the emergency room due to assaults, stabbings, or gunshot wounds. Michael Martinek works as a community corrections specialist in the observation and analysis of drug and alcohol testing and results, collection of DNA and fingerprints, and database administration. Another Suffolk graduate, Don Aviv is chief operating officer of Interfor Inc., an international intelligence and security
consulting firm that conducts investigations for clients around the globe. Classes are held at Suffolk’s downtown Boston campus in the late afternoon and early evening, making the program ideal for working professionals looking to enter or advance in the field. With both full- and part-time options, Suffolk’s crime and justice studies program opens the door to rewarding careers that benefit communities.

TUFTS’ MPH PROGRAM OFFERS A DEGREE YOU CAN PUT TO WORK Melanie Gaiser (MPH ’07) was considering medical school when she happened upon Tufts University School of Medicine’s Masters in Public Health (MPH) program—a program that has led her on a fascinating path. Gaiser plans to pursue a career in qualitative research and patient-provider communication after she completes her PhD in health policy. “Tufts fueled a new passion for me. I am now blending my previous career (as a journalist) with my desire to help patients. Grounded in the practical applications of public health, Tufts’ MPH program is designed for college graduates interested in public health as well as mid-career professionals working in public policy, medicine, law, communications, and other fields. In concentrations ranging from nutrition to global health, the program offers students a solid foundation in public health principles; the Ap-
plied Learning Experience, a selfdesigned field study requirement, provides challenging forays into real work environments. Small classes and professors’ close ties to the medical and public health communities are also key. “One great benefit of being in a medical school is the varied connections faculty have, Gaiser says. “If you need an introduction to someone in a powerful position in public health, your professors will introduce you. If you want to do hospital administration or clinical research, chances are those contacts are right there in the room next to yours. These connections enrich the learning experience and provide many opportunities after graduation. The program also nourishes social justice—which, according to Program Director Anthony Schlaff, MD, MPH, is what public health is all about. At Tufts, students learn critical thinking, writing, and speaking skills that teach them to effect change. “These are the skills employers
look for in students—the ability to solve problems in systems, both at the agency and community levels, Schlaff says. For Gaiser, Tufts fostered her passion to help others. “The professors’ excitement around social justice can’t help but translate to students. Tufts opened my eyes to the extent and causes of health-related inequalities and gave me tools to help alleviate those problems, she says. “If you want a school that will nurture your desire for social justice, go to Tufts. If you want a school that will challenge you, go to Tufts. If you want faculty who are well-connected and responsive to your needs, go to Tufts.

When schools say they offer student support, what do they mean? It could mean a lot of different things. At Bay State College it means we understand that going back to school is a big decision. And, it means we understand your concerns about succeeding at the college level. That’s why, regardless of how you see yourself doing in college, we see an opportunity to help you realize your potential with a community of support. What else does it mean? It means that admissions counselors can show off our campus, answer your questions and guide you through our selection process—even before you apply. It means helping 95 percent of this year’s freshman class receive grants or scholarships that don’t have to be repaid. It means personal success coordinators and a closely-knit student body that can help make America’s biggest college town feel a little more like home.
In the classroom, it means a wide variety of Associates and Bachelor’s degree programs in such in-demand fields as healthcare, business, fashion, criminal justice and more. No matter which program you choose, it means learning in small classes from accessible professors with real-world experience in their field. To fit your schedule, it means making classes available at night or online. As you advance toward your degree, it means having a personal career advancement team. It means helping you write cover letters and resumes, creating mock job interviews and using social media
to help you get noticed. It means internships at some of Boston’s best companies and organizations to build working relationships with people that can help you find a full-time position doing what you love. In the end, what does it all mean? It means that at Bay State College, we care as much about your comfort as we do your success. It means we’re committed to providing you unmatched student support throughout your college journey. It means that going back to school doesn’t mean going it alone. In short, it means Bay State is the right choice for you.

A NEW YEAR, A NEW CAREER
North Bennet Street School, located in Boston, has been teaching professional trades for more than 100 years. The locksmithing and security technology program and the carpentry program are designed to provide the equivalent of a multiple-year apprentice experience in under a year. The intensive, hands-on, nine-month training is a great way to jumpstart a new career or perfect the skills needed to advance quickly in the field. Todd Gaines, a graduate of the carpentry program says “I’d have to train under a master in the field for 10 years to duplicate what I learned at NBSS in less than a year.” “If you like working with your hands, solving puzzles, working independently and helping people, you have the skills needed to be a lock-

It’s a timeless profession that is always in demand.” Both the carpentry and locksmithing programs are accredited by the ACCSC (Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges) and financial aid is available
for qualified students. The programs accept students throughout the year. The next locksmithing program begins in February and the next carpentry program begins in September. In addition to carpentry and locksmithing, the school offers programs in jewelry making and repair, piano technology, preservation carpentry, violin making and repair, bookbinding and cabinet and furniture making.

Babson Redefines Entrepreneurship – Helping You Define Your Career Goals
Are you an entrepreneur? To succeed in today’s economy, you have to be. But what exactly is an entrepreneur? What do they know and what do they do? Are you born that way or can you learn to be one? Babson was the first to understand that “entrepreneur is not a personality type but a way of thinking and acting to create economic and social value. Today, Babson promotes Entrepreneurial Thought and ActionŽ as the most powerful force for positive change in the world. The Babson MBA Program has been ranked #1 for Entrepreneurship in the nation for 18 consecutive years by U.S. News & World Report. That’s
because unlike other schools, Babson infuses entrepreneurship education throughout the overall academic pedagogy, rather than teaching it as a siloed subject. Our diverse and accomplished faculty will immerse you in the nuts and bolts, and the rewards and opportunities, of Entrepreneurship of All KindsŽ. Entrepreneurship: The wellspring of innovation “Babson seeks to continuously redefine the concept of entrepreneurship in the face of changing global economic realities, says Raghu Tadepalli, Ph.D., Murata Dean and Professor of Marketing, F.W. Olin Graduate School of Business at Babson. “We teach our students to have a broader worldview; they quickly understand that there are all kinds of ways to make an impact on people’s lives, and entrepreneurship is the wellspring of innovation
that makes it all possible. As one would expect from a school of Babson’s reputation, our MBAs gain strong foundational business skills here – but even more, they learn to be comfortable with ambiguity, to embrace accountability, and to be adaptable in a wide range of contexts. They are taught to identify and capitalize on opportunities, and are committed to using both their entrepreneurial mindset and their business skills to benefit themselves, their organizations, their communities, and, ultimately, the world at large. A unified MBA program Recently, Babson significantly revamped its highly ranked MBA program in response to a rapidly changing world that needs entrepreneurial leaders with vision, ability, and compassion. The new, unified MBA curriculum offers a wide range of pro-

grammatic elements that prepare students for the jobs of tomorrow and an increasingly globalized economy. With the new Babson MBA curriculum, our graduates will emerge ready to lead and committed to making a difference in organizations of all types and sizes. Babson’s unified MBA program and curriculum is delivered in two full-time (one-year and two-year) and two parttime options (evening and a blended onsite/online “Fast Track program). Regardless of which option you choose, you will take the same courses with the same stellar faculty, ensuring a transformative, hands-on MBA experience from which you will emerge an entrepreneurial leader with a global mindset. Babson’s beautiful, treelined main campus is located in Wellesley, with satellite facilities in the “Innovation District along the picturesque South Boston waterfront. In our living/learning laboratory, we offer dozens of student clubs, numerous academic and research centers, and easy access to all the arts, culture – and employment opportunities – that Boston is known for.
As beautiful as our campuses are, however, they really act as a launch pad for our graduates who find that a Babson MBA opens doors to exciting careers. According to Kathy McGettrick, vice president of market insights at IBM, “Babson students are well-equipped to take their deep insights and practical knowledge and turn them into successful strategies for our company.

+ About the list Metro asked Robert Reid, U.S. travel editor for the Lonely Planet guide books, on the five hottest locales for 2012. These are his picks.
Top travel destinations for 2012 GETTY IMAGES
Burma (Myanmar) A travel boycott to this Southeast Asia country ended over a year ago. It’s a fascinating, friendly place, yet still gets only a trickle of the visitors as its neighbor, Thailand. One of the best main attractions is Bagan — a plain filled of hundreds of centuries-old pagodas along the Ayeyarwady River. You can reach them by bike or horse cart on dirt trails — search out hidden stairways to reach upperlevel platforms with unreal views.
Coastal Wales All eyes will be on London in 2012 — with summer Olympics set for summer — but Wales’ coast is quietly turning into a prime-time attraction of itself. It’s beautiful. A new All Coastal Wales Path is set to be finished, a 1,000-mile trail system along the craggy shoreline, where you can find fishing towns to stay in or manors or castles rented out by the National Trust. Zero in on Pembrokeshire in the south, with Barrafundle Bay and St. David’s being particular standouts.

Ruta Maya So, it’s a bit of a tongue-incheek concern that doomsday may come as the Mayan long-count calendar ends this Dec. 21, but that makes for a good case for diving deeper into the still thriving Mayan culture in southern Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras and Belize. But a warning: You will be hooked the more you know. An easy way to experience it is by planning on a few days in Merida, Mexico — a real Spanish colonial city a few hours in from the Cancun beach.
Orlando, Fla. Orlando is trying to break the 50 million mark of visitors this year. Most, nearly all, go for the amusement parks — but I challenge visitors to give the city a day. On its leafy streets you’ll wish you had a home on, you can walk to lakes and parks. Loch Haven Park is a complex of museums on lovely grounds, including the Mennello Museum of Art. The emerging Milk District is a bohemian spot with bookstores, bars and restaurants serving vegan pizza and beer collections.

Culebra, Puerto Rico You don’t have to have a passport to go to Puerto Rico, and it’s home to one of the world’s greatest beaches — a complete secret, even, to many of the people who visit the island. The world-class beach Playa Flamenco is on the tiny, offbeat, laid-back island of Culebra, 17 miles off Puerto Rico’s mainland. Reached by ferry or flight, it’s great for snorkeling or hikes in a wildlife refuge. Beachside apartments go for $150 a night. LONELY PLANET

Pietrus
Pietrus likely against Mavs Josh McDaniels gave Tim Tebow a chance in the NFL. He’ll be back on the Pats’ sidelines Saturday night.
Tebow’s teacher Josh McDaniels returns to Pats just in time to play mind games with Tebow, Broncos Former Denver coach drafted the pigskin preacher Everyone assumed it would be Patriots-Steelers. But it’s not the first time Tim Tebow proved us all wrong. Tebow and the Broncos upset the Steelers and are heading to Foxboro for a Saturday night showdown at Gillette Stadium. And that's probably fine with the Patriots. The Pats beat the Broncos 41-23 on Dec. 18 in Denver, shutting up the Tebow-holics for the time being. Now, the Pats have a couple key defensive players back (safety Patrick Chung and linebacker Brandon Spikes). Oh, and Denver’s head coach from last season.
Caserio explains decision Nick Caserio isn’t headed to the dark side and he explained why in a conference call yesterday. “I have a great job in New England, I work with a great staff,
Josh McDaniels, the former Broncos head coach (2009-10) as well as former Patriots offensive coordinator (2006-08), has officially joined the team as an offensive assistant for the remainder of the postseason,
with the idea that he will take over for current offensive coordinator, Bill O’Brien, at season’s end when O’Brien leaves for Penn State. “He’s a very experienced coach in the league; a good coach that we have a lot of background with,” Bill Belichick said. “I think he can help us in a lot of different ways … I think he’s an asset because of his knowledge, his work ethic and his familiarity with what we’re doing. Right now it’s just a one game season, so whatever we can do to help ourselves this week we’ll do and then we’ll worry about next week and next year later.”
privileged to work for the head coach that I do,” Caserio said when pressed about the reported interest the Indianapolis Colts had in hiring the Patriots current director of player personnel. “Today is no different than it was any other day. I enjoy being here and right now
the focus is getting ready for the Denver Broncos. That’s where we’re at.” There’s been plenty of comings and goings in the NFL the past few days. Following offensive coordinator Bill O’Brien’s departure to Penn State during the
Bonus baby Tim Tebow’s upset victory over the Steelers on Sunday paid off in more ways than one: $250,000 was the extra amount of cash the Broncos quarterback received due to an escalator in his contract for each playoff victory.
So McDaniels will show up with Denver’s playbook, right? Well, not exactly. The John Foxcoached Broncos are a new team, but it can’t hurt to bring on a guy who’s familiar with certain players and tendencies — on both teams. “I’ve enjoyed our conversations the past couple days as we’ve gotten caught up on some things and moved forward into the playoffs here,” Belichick said. "I think that he’ll be a good asset to our team for the remainder of the season.” JIMMY TOSCANO sports@metro.us
weekend and Josh McDaniels return to New England, the Patriots former defensive coordinator Romeo Crennel was officially named head coach of the Kansas City Chiefs yesterday. Crennel went 2-1 as the interim head coach of the Chiefs and beat previously unbeaten Green Bay. METRO
Celtics forward Mickael Pietrus said he will make his Boston debut Wednesday against the Dallas Mavericks at TD Garden. The Guadeloupe native was a strong defensive presence against the Celtics when he played for Orlando in 2009 and 2010. METRO

Monday, NHL disciplinarian Brendan Shanahan concluded that Marchand’s upending clip of defenseman Sami Salo during the Bruins 4-3 loss to the Canucks on Saturday was not a defensive or evasive move. That, coupled with Salo’s resulting head injury — and that Marchand was a repeat offender — led to the sentence of five games, starting tonight when the Bruins face Winnipeg at TD Garden. Shanahan’s was the final say after a volley of warring words between the Bruins and Canucks. Canucks coach Alain Vigneault fired the first shot, all but placing a bounty on Marchand’s head after Bruins coach Claude Julien offered the “duck” defense after Saturday’s game. “That's a stupid comment,” Vigneault said. “Marchand … someday he's going to get it. Someday,

NHL Rule No. 44 was the violation which got B’s forward Brad Marchand suspended five games. It specifically cites ‘clipping’ violations. somebody's going to say enough is enough and they're going to hurt the kid, because he plays to hurt players.” Julien and Bruins general manager Peter Chiarelli responded forcefully Monday. “Sometimes you got to look in your backyard,'' Julien said. “We all know he's got the same type of players on his team. It's hypocritical and we're stupid and we're idiots and they're the smartest team in the league. I guess we need to listen to all the gab
they have to say.'' Said Chiarelli: “[Marchand’s] no dirtier than maybe two or three of their players. We generally try to take the high road when it comes to this stuff, but we have to respond. I'm friends with Mike [Gillis, Canucks GM] and I'm friends with Alain, but I don't like the way that it's come out. That's a real inappropriate comment. It's an unprofessional comment.” The Bruins are playing every other night over the course of the next week, jamming in a bunch of games prior to the NHL AllStar Game on Jan. 29 in Ottawa. Winnipeg enters tonight’s game (7 p.m., NESN) as the ninth-best team in the Eastern Conference and has 45 points on the season. JEFF GOLDBERG sports@metro.us
