8,500-karat gem stolen in Delaware The biggest ruby ever unearthed, found 50 years ago in Africa, isn’t just unique for its size — though it does weigh four pounds. It was carved into a replica of the Liberty Bell in 1976. The gem was on sale at a Wilmington jewelry store until two months ago, when armed robbers made off with the jewel worth an estimated $2 million.
