Protesters hold blank signs, warning the bill will result in censorship.

New York City’s tech community went offline and into the streets yesterday to protest the increasingly unpopular anti-piracy bills Stop Online Piracy Act and Protect Intellectual Property Act currently being mulled by members of Congress. Nearly 200 protesters rallied outside the offices of Sens. Charles Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand, demanding the pair drop their support of the bills. SOPA and PIPA legislation is designed, among other things, to give the U.S. government the ability to shut down access to foreign websites that share pirated movies, unli-

Their defense Sens. Gillibrand and Schumer issued a joint statement in response to protesters’ cries: “There are two important issues in this debate: continued freedom of expression on the Internet and the ability to block online piracy. We believe that both sides can come together on a solution that satisfies their respective concerns.

Sens. Gillibrand and Schumer are among dozens of elected officials who signed the bills. But some have now dropped their support due to the outrage.

The protest was virtual too, with nearly 7,000 tech companies blacking out their websites in objection to the bills. censed music and counterfeit goods. Schumer and Gillibrand are just two of the dozens of members of Congress who support the bill. Supporters of the bills argue that they are protecting jobs by fighting online piracy, but opponents say the laws clear the way for Internet censorship. “This is a horrible law,” said Peter Lidner, 62, an iPhone app developer who lives in Union

Square. “This is America, not communist China.” Yesterday’s protest was organized through MeetUp.com. “This will cripple the Internet,” said Meetup CEO and founder Scott Heiferman. Heiferman called SOPA and PIPA “silly” and insisted today was only the beginning of antiSOPA and PIPA efforts. “We’re standing our ground,” he vowed. Protesters believe the senators support the bill at the behest of entertainment and media lobbyists. “They are protecting copyright holders at the expense of everyone else,” said David Car-

roll, 36, a Parsons University professor. “It would basically destroy the startup industry in the world.” The bill has undergone many changes and will most likely undergo more, but protesters say no amount of tinkering will make the proposed laws palatable. “Whatever small tweaks they make, it’s still a power struggle between the large media institutions and innovation on the Internet,” said Park Slope resident Cassidy Leerman, 30.

“We’ve had many discussions and held many meetings with all parts of the Internet community — from users, to members of the NY Tech Meet-up, to startups, to big Internet firms like Google, Facebook, and Yahoo — to hear their concerns regarding this proposed legislation, and we’ll continue those discussions. “After constructive dialogue with many in the technology community, we have worked to make an important change in the bill regarding

DNS provisions. We will continue to work with our colleagues to ensure a proper balance between stopping the theft of intellectual property and copyright infringement, and doing so without the unintended consequence of stifling or censoring the Internet, which we strongly oppose. We have worked to make sure there are due process protections to ensure that legal activity over the Internet is not disrupted and that the Web continues to be a place of innovation.”

Money from drug bust now helping Bx teens

Teens play basketball inside the Teen Impact Center in Morris Heights.

In 1914, then-commissioner of the NYPD, Arthur Woods, asked his police officers to do more than just fight crime: He wanted them to help some of the neediest New Yorkers in their precincts. Woods was particularly concerned about the lack of open space for New York City children to play. He started a citywide search for vacant lots, which could be converted into play areas. Today, the organization Woods founded along with Lower East Side’s police captain, John Sweeney, is known as the Police Athletic League — a nonprofit that helps set up safe recreation areas, after-school programs and mentoring for kids and teens. Once a month, Metro will feature updates about what the Police Athletic League is doing and how they are working to help make New York City streets healthier and safer.

One of the latest initiatives of the Police Athletic League is to take drug money and give it to kids in the communities where those drugs were sold. The Police Athletic League, a nonprofit group run by civilians, just opened a center in the Bronx in December. There, teenagers can escape the streets with basketball and other programs, all paid for by money confiscated in a drug bust that took place right

New York City’s Special Narcotics Prosecutor Bridget Brennan donated the money, according to Alana Sweeney, who runs the Police Athletic League. “They’ve taken this money that was unraveling the fabric of the community, and now they’re using that money to reweave the fabric, to give the kids a chance,” Sweeney said. The Teen Impact Center, at I.S. 229 in Morris Heights, hosts basketball, volleyball and dance classes for youths ages 12 to 19. PAL builds such centers in neighborhoods the NYPD suggests needs them, she said — usually areas of high crime, poverty and unemployment. “You tend to have an increase in the gangs. ... You tend to have higher crime in those areas,” she said. Police officers also often

Yesterday we warned you we were on the lookout for dirt on Republican presidential candidate front-runner Mitt Romney. Then, as if in response to our plea, the Internet heavens opened and dumped the book on Mitt — specifically, the 200-page laundry list of flip-flops, missteps and other general negatives compiled by the 2008 McCain campaign. Hallelujah, Amen. Between scathing details of Romney’s “pro-choice” beliefs,

then his switch to “no prochoice,” then back to “prochoice” again, and finally firmly “pro-life” for now, are some details that will shake the foundations of his presidential campaign, if not the nation. Take, for instance, the revelation on page 137 that Romney’s former employer, Bain Capital — his affiliation with which has already caused Romney a few headaches on the campaign trail over allegations of “vulture capitalism” — “was once dubbed the KGB of consulting.” Or the mention, on page 199 under the heading “Awkward Moments,” that Romney once described fake basketball team the Harlem Globetrotters as having “trouble making touchdowns.” But it doesn’t get much

Interestingly, both of Romney’s allegedly favorite films involve a strong treasure-hunting theme.

worse than the page 175 revelation that Romney has flipped, of all things, on his choice of favorite film. According to The Book: “Romney once said ‘O Brother Where Art Thou’ was his favorite movie, now says it is ‘Raiders of the Lost Ark.’” We can see here that Romney is clearly in the pocket of Big Lucas. “Raiders”, the first of the Indiana Jones films, is certainly memorable if not for its strong anti-Nazi and face-melting themes. But “O Brother,” the Coen brothers’ Homerian homage to the deep South, is a quintessentially American film, set in the good old days of transparent racism. Did Romney just lose South Carolina? Obama just too smart for us NEW YORK. Newsweek

made waves this week with a cover story titled “Why are Obama’s critics so dumb?” in which writer Andrew Sullivan described Obama critics on both sides of the aisle as “simply — empirically — wrong.” Well, we don’t like being wrong any more than the next guy. As such, we will politely put to bed all of our apparently wrongheaded complaints about Obama, including that he has: institutionalized the secret assassinations of U.S. citizens; prosecuted Bush-era whistleblowers; unilaterally declared war; and empowered the financial industry by placing key bank execs in places of high government power. Gee, ignorance really is bliss.

Mark Wahlberg could have helped prevent 9/11?

Love being creative.

It looks like Mark Wahlberg has spent a little too much time talking tough on movie sets. In an interview with Men’s Journal, the actor claims that if he had been onboard a hijacked plane on September 11, 2011, things would have ended differently. (Before we get started, some fun facts about Mark Wahlberg: He’s 5’8” and doesn’t have a pilot’s license.) “If I was on that plane with my kids, it wouldn’t have went down like it did,” says the actor, who had purchased a ticket for one of the planes that crashed into the World Trade Center but changed his travel plans. “There would have been a lot of blood in that first-class cabin and then me saying, ‘OK, we’re going to land somewhere safely, don’t worry.’” Oh, Mark. In the real world, saying heroic things in a Southie Boston accent doesn’t magically kill the bad guys.

@SteveMartinToGo My vow: if I can’t think up anything interesting to say, I will say it on Twitter.

His relationship with French singer Vanessa Paradis is “all but officially finished,” sources tell People magazine. Others claim the pair have already split after spending 13 years together. Oh, who are we kidding: We can work with Captain Jack’s eyeliner if he promises to keep the Wonka wig in the drawer.

I don’t see it ending well.” So what’s the draw of a loosecannon ex-boyfriend? “Rihanna loves to live dangerously, and talking to and hooking up with Chris is all part of that,” says another source.

Beyonce gushes about Blue Ivy Beyonce Knowles is at a loss for words when it comes to new daughter Blue Ivy Carter. “Noth-

ing can describe the feeling,” she says in her first post-birth interview, with Star magazine. “You have the instant connection once you know your child is growing inside you. But when you hold it for the first time, the words can’t be found.” As for husband Jay-Z, Beyonce confirms he was on hand for the delivery. “He would not have missed it for anything,” Beyonce says. “He is a very protective and loyal guy by nature.” Unfortunately, not everybody's feeling the love: Beyonce's rep says the interview is “completely made up.”

Michelle Williams admits that going back to work after the death of ex-boyfriend Heath Ledger was nearly the end of her career. “It was horrible. I don’t remember most of it,” the “My Week with Marilyn” star tells GQ magazine. After making her first two films after the tragedy — “Mammoth” and “Shutter Island” — Williams considered retiring from acting. “That seemed like a really smart idea,” the recent Golden Globe winner says.

any things can be said about Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, but one thing is for sure: They are not in a rut. How do they keep their romance exciting when it is easy, in a committed relationship, to settle into the mundane? To tell the truth, it isn’t so hard — but it does require a little effort. The reason so many couples do start to feel stuck in a boring routine is because there is a strong force that pulls them toward their comfort zone. This could mean staying in on a weekend night, wearing your sweatpants around the house, eating at the same restaurant repeatedly or going to a different restaurant but still ordering the same old dish. Keep in mind that the ingredient that keeps a relationship feeling fresh is change itself, because that is what brings in the new. But most people resist change since it is daunting and can make them feel anxious. You have to find the balance between the ease of the familiar and the adventure of the unknown. It’s fine to have a movie night at home in your pajamas as long as you even it out with a date night that you can both look forward to. Super PACs used by Democrats as well! RE: “WHEN SUPER PACS ATTACK”:

This article makes it seem that the Republicans invented a new form of political spending. There is no mention of the $9 million spent by the Service Employees International Union in 2008 in support of Obama’s election. And also $1 million spent by the Goldman Sachs PAC? (That paid off well.) And then there was Moveon.org, NARAL, the United Food & Commercial Workers International. In total, the 2008 Obama PACs spent $750 million. This is all out of control. Gingrich wants to go back in time Newt Gingrich says: “You could ... hire 30-some kids to

work in the school for the price of one janitor, and those 30 kids would be a lot less likely to drop out.” Although clearly the smartest of the GOP candidates, Gingrich lacks familiarity with child-labor laws, the human compassion that is their basis and the street smarts to know that many urban-poor kids drop out to deal drugs and make far more money. He obviously wants us to return to the Triangle Shirt Factory: slave labor, no minimum wage, working 14 hours, 7 days a week, 365 days a year; that is, no government regulation over the lords-and-commoners “market.” This sentiment typifies Republicans and exemplifies why no Republican should ever hold public office at any level of any government. Federal government should run economy RE: “LET THE STATES TAKE CARE OF THEMSELVES”: The Constitu-

The industrial revolution caused huge growth in our economy. We became a modern industrial state in a global economy with more to regulate. 50 state-based regulations on everything would cause chaos for businesses. Female chefs on how they stay in the fire We asked three top female chefs what it takes to succeed Long hours and hard work pay off Their advice for future chefs — male and female

‘‘G

ood ingredients and intense, true flavors” are what inspire Kierin Baldwin, head pastry chef at The Dutch. They’re also what make a successful chef. We spoke to three of New York’s top female chefs about the passion, dedication, and sacrifice required to excel in a male-dominated industry.

Advice for female chefs All chefs recommend working in a kitchen for at least a year. “Don’t call in sick, don’t show up late, don’t goof off,” says chef Amanda Cohen, owner of vegetarian restaurant Dirt Candy. “If you put in the work, your technique will support you for the rest of your life.” Baldwin’s advice for male pastry cooks? “Don't be too cocky. ... This is the same advice I give women, though.”

The strength to be flexible Success in a professional kitchen requires long hours, often very early or late, making it difficult to see loved ones who work or go to school during the day. “You have to be at peace with it,” chef Baldwin says, “or you will never be happy in this profession.” Flexibility is also crucial. Early in her career, vegetarian chef Cohen (pictured) occasionally prepared meat. “I cooked by smell, touch and sound, and judging by how popular my buffalo wings were, it worked.” She now eats a bit of seafood. “You have to taste the competition to stay competitive.”

Finding balance “We lose a lot of women because they want or need to be caretakers in their families,” says Anita Lo, industry veteran and executive chef and owner of Annisa (“women” in Arabic). While pastry cooking draws more women than men, ranks dwindle at the management level for the same reason. But chef Lo notices that more women are balancing work and home. Lo, who exemplified grit when she rebuilt Annisa after a kitchen fire in 2009, draws inspiration from her mother, a doctor. “She worked very hard, making a quarter of what my father did for the same job.” Still, says Lo, “she came home after working 15 hours a day and cooked for us.” REBECCA FINKEL

Henry Wolfe on discovering a tradition of songwriting that predates the British Invasion He writes in a style that works for backing bands on East and West coasts Modern music enters Henry Wolfe’s life rarely. He’s in his early 30s and he lived through Williamsburg’s hipster heyday, even playing in an electro-ish combo called Bravo Silva before moving to Los Angeles several years ago. He says he has always loved music from the 1970s, Neil Young being notable among that, but it’s the

A lot of music I’ve made and will probably make in the future is arranged down to the minutiae of what each instrument will play.” That element works because, like the proverbial sailor with a girl in every port, Wolfe has different East Coast and

Wolfe in Streep’s clothing Wolfe is the son of actress Meryl Streep, and he and his family had cause for celebration the night before he chatted with Metro. His mom won the Golden Globe for Best Actress for her masterful portrayal of former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher in “The Iron Lady.” “This is the time of the year when it’s convention season for Hollywood,” Wolfe says. “My mom has been in L.A. quite a lot. I’m really proud of her. I think she’s outdone herself with this film.”

Tonight, 7:30 Howard Gilman Opera House, Brooklyn Academy of Music, 30 Lafayette Ave. $35, 718-636-4100 In 1998, Jeff Mangum pro-duced what is arguably one of the most celebrated albums in indie music with Neutral Milk Hotel’s “In the Aeroplane Over the Sea,” a masterpiece of lo-fi folk and ambiguous lyrical imagery. The mythmaking of the record has only intensified over time as Mangum became a recluse, never writing a follow-up and making only sporadic live appearances. But as time heals most wounds, he has scheduled a three-night residency at the BAM. Tickets may be hard to come by.

Cults Tonight at 8 Webster Hall, 125 E. 11th St. 800-745-3000 Cults, comprised of NYC natives Brian Oblivion and Madeline Follin, became one of the most buzzed about new bands last year thanks to their self-titled debut and its pairing of precocious, dreamy ’60s girl-pop with synths and softly integrated samples. Much like their namesake would suggest, the band’s following is only getting stronger. MIKE HILLERY

Credit Card Debt?

Solutions that can help you get out of debt. Tom Hill CGA STAFF WRITER

Every three minutes another person falls behind on credit card debt. It’s no wonder, since every major credit card company has nearly doubled the minimum monthly payment on consumers’ bills. Federal Regulators forced the change because of their concern about the growing mountain of consumer debt, which stands at $2.17 trillion. Many consumers can only pay the minimum payment, which can take up to 30 years to pay off. Now, relief is in sight for millions of Americans. CreditGUARD of America, a non-profit licensed debt management service provider, is making a new program available to lower debt payments and become free of all credit card debt in only three to five years. Consumers need only $2,000 or more in total credit card debt and behind on any account, to cut their payment by 35% to 50%, and reduce or eliminate interest charges altogether. Over 200,000 families, located throughout the U.S. have regained financial independence with CreditGUARD’s licensed, bonded and insured service. CreditGUARD of America has received high marks in consumer surveys showing high consumer satisfaction and confidence. The CreditGUARD debt management program can actually turn a person’s life around. One such case is Sandra L. who proclaimed “CreditGUARD cut my monthly payment by $656 and saved me over $29,206.53 in interest. They saved my way of life and gave me back my piece of mind! Now I can see myself on my way to becoming debt free.” or Jeffery C. who said “CreditGUARD of America helped me consolidate 3 of my credit cards into one affordable payment. They are now saving me nearly $200 a month. Now I will be debt free in 2 years or less” Certified Credit Counselors at CreditGUARD of America provide Debt Relief Consultations at no charge, when you call 1-888-483-6410. The Inquisition: A history According to one of Monty Python’s most famous sketches, “Nobody expects the Spanish Inquisition! But according to Vanity Fair’s editor-at-large, Cullen Murphy, inquisitions should come as no surprise given the past record of human civilization. In his new book, “God’s Jury: The Inquisition and the Making of the Modern World, Murphy traces the history of inquisitions — Spanish, but also Medieval, Roman and others — and parallels their harsh methods of persecution and interrogation with others familiar

from today’s headlines. “Any inquisition has an institutional basis that allows persecution or repression to occur over long periods of time. When you go back and look at the inquisitions with those things in mind, I think that you find the concept to be a lot more modern than you may have expect-

ed if you’re thinking about people in dark chambers with hoods and torches. What is most surprising in Murphy’s account is the almost nerdy bureaucracy that springs up repeatedly in inquisitions, which have a tendency toward exhaustive record-keeping. “Bureaucracy, on the one hand,

keeps civilization running, Murphy says. “On the other hand, it drives us crazy. I think anyone who has seen ‘The Office’ or has been through a line at the airport will have a bit of a sense of this already. SHAUN BRADY

Manning not at practice due to illness Sometimes when a player is missing from practice it goes unnoticed. Other times, it’s impossible to miss. Count Eli Manning in the second category. But Giants fans shouldn’t have to worry. “Eli started practice, but did not finish,” head coach Tom Coughlin said. “He has a stomach bug and that is why he appears on the injury list. Hopefully it is just a 24hour deal and he will feel better tomorrow. METRO

Eli Manning and the Giants are talking unusually large about this weekend’s NFC championship game in San Francisco.

Blue thinking big Not just Antrel Rolle is feeling confident Victor Cruz says team does feel unstoppable Matchup is just an obstacle, not a chance for revenge

It’s almost inarguable that anyone on the Giants has as big a chip on their shoulder as safety Antrel Rolle, but that doesn’t preclude others from having the same amount of confidence as they prepare for San Francisco. “In a sense we do feel like it,” receiver Victor Cruz said when asked if he feels like his team is unstoppable. “If we’re playing like we’ve been playing, if we’re executing at a high level the way we’ve been

the 49ers again said having played them before — and losing to them — helps the team hone in on assignments better. But in the end, the players said the 49ers represent the next obstacle. “They’re just in the way of where we want to be and obviously that’s the Super Bowl,” linebacker Michael Boley said.
