CIA’s lawyer did not approve NYPD help NEW YORK. The Associated Press reported Friday that the CIA’s top lawyer did not approve sending an agent to New York to help train NYPD cops, as NYPD Commissioner Ray Kelly maintains. The CIA is permitted to help local law enforcement, but only when their general counsel approves it, which did not happen in this case, according to the AP. The NYPD worked with the CIA to send undercover officers into Muslim neighborhoods.

Report: Tech, media companies will rule New York in 2012 EMILY ANNE EPSTEIN emily.epstein@metro.us

Look to Google instead of Wall Street to provide jobs in 2012, New Yorkers. A new report by Cresa, a corporate real estate advisory firm, revealed a downward trend in financial industry office rentals in its fourth quarter 2011 report for Manhattan. By analyzing office rental trends citywide, Cresa predicts job creation and contraction. “The city comptroller recently estimated that the financial services industry is set to lose 10,000 jobs in New York City,” read the report, referring to Comptroller John Liu’s report released earlier last year. “For every financial service job eliminated, a loss of two other jobs is expected to occur in various support services across the city.” Cresa has watched office space open up in Midtown North and Downtown, where many financial services firms are traditionally located. The vacancies are evidence of a shrinking financial job market, the report claims. “It is too early to gauge the impact, but the threat is real,” the report warned. But there is a silver lining: Cresa predicts that media and technology companies will bloom in the Big Apple in 2012. “The attraction is the city’s

Where will the jobs be? Cresa predicts that tech company growth will center around Midtown South, and not in Midtown North or Downtown, where the financial industry is shrinking. The report noted that the needs of tech giants like Facebook and Google, which both have established regional centers in New York, are different than traditional offices. Tech companies prefer open spaces, natural light and efficient electrical wiring over corner offices and cubicles, the report argues. Newly constructed buildings, according to the report, are better suited to fit those needs.

access to a large talent pool, access to venture capital,” read the report. The survey noted that the city’s plan to build a large engineering and applied sciences campus on Roosevelt Island will be a big boon to job growth. The tech and media sector has created 20,000 jobs in New York City in the last five years, according to Cresa.

Many New York children died last year while they were being monitored by the city’s Administration of Children’s Services. More than half of the 75 children who died in 2011 had at least three prior records of neglect or abuse, according to a report issued Saturday by Public Advocate Bill de Blasio. “Children continue to fall through the cracks,” de Blasio said. About 56 percent of the fatalities — 42 out of the 75 deaths — involved families with a record of three or more contacts with the child welfare system, according to the report. Four of the 75 families had 16 or more contacts with the Administration of Children’s Services. De Blasio’s report comes

six years after the tragic death of Nixzmary Brown, who died at the age of seven on Jan. 11, 2006. Child welfare workers were aware that Brown was repeatedly beaten and bound with rope at home; nevertheless,

she died at the hands of her stepfather. The case spurred reforms in the agency, but de Blasio said more needs to be done. For example, he suggested that ACS do more to inform parents about hazardous sleeping arrangements. Of the 75 deaths, many included infants who suffocated. About 31 percent of the children who weren’t yet 1 year old suffocated, either while co-sleeping with an adult who rolled over them or in a crib cramped with pillows and stuffed animals. De Blasio said ACS needs to employ a system that will trigger further assessments after multiple reports of abuse.

Romney to release his tax returns Mitt Romney pledged yesterday to release his tax returns this week, bowing to pressure from critics and hoping to make up for a misstep that helped rival Newt Gingrich win South Carolina’s primary race. Long considered the frontrunner, Romney stumbled badly in debates last week on his delay in disclosing his tax returns and then lost his air of being the inevitable Republican nominee after a resurrected Gingrich soundly defeated him in the third contest. Trying to regain his momentum as the race heads to the pivotal state of Florida, Romney sought to draw a line under the bad week and fix his error. He said he would release his 2010 returns and an estimate for 2011 on Tuesday. “We made a mistake hold-

You know, Mitt, this means war

Metropolitik BRAYDEN SIMMS POLITICAL REALISM FOR THE URBAN PROLETARIAT

@METROPOLITIK

If you’re looking for a message to take away from Saturday night’s South Carolina Republican Primary — in which Newt Gingrich dealt a staggering blow to the momentum of a Romney candidacy — it might be that, despite the U.S. withdrawal from Iraq, more war awaits. Was it the class war? Following his Jan. 3 loss in Iowa, Gingrich launched his “Armageddon” strategy of rival attack ads. The focused negativity drew ire from establishment conservatives — and even Gingrich him-

self, who like other Republican power brokers called for the Gingrich-supporting Winning Our Future super PAC to stop running ads attacking Romney over his affiliation with Bain Capital. But the ads didn’t stop, and the Gingrich train rolled over Mitt in Charleston. Exit polls show that middle- and lower-class voters overwhelmingly supported Gingrich; the only income group that supported Romney in the majority is the one earning more than $200,000 a year. Something seems to have resonated. Was it race war? Media war? Ex-

it polls also showed two-thirds of South Carolina voters saying they made their choices based on the two local debates, in which Gingrich scored big

points — and roaring applause — by attacking media pundits. On Monday Gingrich put moderator Juan Williams “in his place” by roundly rejecting his scrutiny of Newt’s claim calling Obama “the greatest foodstamp president in American history,” furthering a nasty narrative in which Democrats allegedly pander to a lazy black voting bloc. The drubbing continued Thursday when Gingrich won more accolades by again attacking a moderator as part of an “elite media.” There’s a war brewing, all right. But before it reaches President Obama, that war is being aimed at minorities, Romney and other liberal scare stories. The scandal involving a highly respected football program brought national attention to the issue of child sexual abuse in the same way that pedophilia charges involving Roman Catholic priests did years earlier. A member of the College Football Hall of Fame, Paterno was unrivaled by his peers for the longevity of his success. His firing caused thousands of students to swarm downtown State College, the hometown of Penn State, in protest. Only a handful of other football coaches, such as the late Paul “Bear” Bryant of the University of Alabama, were held in such reverence. Looked upon as a beloved institution in Pennsylvania,

Paterno won national championships in 1982 and 1986 and survived calls to leave the job because of his advanced age. During his last few years, he tended to coach games from the press box rather than the sidelines because of his age. The Brooklyn-born Paterno played football at Brown University from 1946 to 1949 and graduated with a degree in English literature. He joined Penn State as an assistant coach in 1950 and began building his résumé as head coach 16 years later. Paterno steered the Nittany Lions to seven undefeated regular seasons. Aside from occasional dust-ups at the Neiman Marcus accessory wall, “Project Runway” is one reality show that isn’t known for its backbiting. At a New York screening of the spinoff “Project Runway All Stars,” contestants — including the dashing Austin Scarlett in beads and a bow tie — broke from the usual red carpet decorum to greet each other with squeals and hugs. “I keep in touch with a lot of them,” said Kara Janx from

Season 2. “I’ve formed some really solid relationships.” So how do these “all stars” — favorite designers from the first eight seasons of “Project Runway” who are competing once again in a new series of fashion challenges — make it work the second time around? “You need to admire your fellow designers and get inspired by each other,” said Kenley Collins, wearing her trademark red lipstick. “Make your life a little easier and just get

designer Isaac Mizrahi, one of the show’s judges. But that all might change in an upcoming episode, when the designers are given only six hours to complete a challenge. Executive producer Rob Bagshaw says those kinds of tasks were created to pit contestants “against the challenge instead of each other.” We’ll see if the needles come out.

Speaking of “Project Runway,” shocking news broke over the weekend that host Heidi Klum is planning to file for divorce from husband Seal, per TMZ. But now gossips and “sources” the world over are starting to backtrack. “Nothing is finalized or for sure,” a friend of the two told Us Weekly. “Seal flew back from the U.K. yesterday, and he and Heidi are in the house together now.” According to some reports, Klum is fed up with Seal’s partying lifestyle. “When they had their holiday in Ibiza in the summer last year, Seal hit it hard. [He] was out at clubs and with his friends a lot, and Heidi was left with their kids trying to enjoy herself,” a source told The Mirror. This is so sad; they always seemed like they were one celebrity couple who would make it. Hopefully Seal will man up and realize that Klum is a much better option than the bottle. If not, there is truly no hope for any Hollywood marriage.

‘She can beat up In Steven Soderbergh’s new action flick ‘Haywire,’ Fassbender, Ewan McGregor and Channing Tatum

C

hanning Tatum knows how to pick a fight. Last year, he quite vocally went on the record admitting he wasn’t interested in watching or starring opposite a female action hero until Hollywood unearthed a woman who was truly intimidating. “I’ve always wanted someone that I would be afraid to fight. And they found one,” he grins,

most dudes’ Gina Carano smacks around Michael Somehow, they lived to tell the tale sitting in a suite at the Four Seasons in Beverly Hills where he’s promoting his latest film, “Haywire,” a Bourne-esque action thriller about a covert operative caught in a deadly double cross that’s headlined by female mixed-martial arts star Gina Carano. “Isn’t she just the most amazing little thing ever?” Tatum gushes. “I mean, she’s diesel, but she’s just got the best heart and she’s so good in this movie.” Carano, best known for her fight appearances and role as Crush on “American Gladiators,” was approached by “Haywire” director Steven Soderbergh to do an action movie, though he did caution her it would be “interesting” to see who signed on for the roles that demanded grown men get their butts kicked by a girl who also happens to be a trained Muy Thai fighter. “She’s a real fighter, she can beat up most dudes,” Tatum chuckles. Her other co-stars are equally enthusiastic: “Oh, I got my butt kicked sideways by her and I loved every minute of it,”

Ewan McGregor offers. “It never crossed my mind for a minute not to do the movie for some macho reason.” Carano, who describes herself as “a tomboy who also loved ‘Pride and Prejudice,’” says she feels incredibly lucky to have been given the chance to do any movie, let alone the lead in a Soderbergh project. “I don’t consider myself what people are necessarily looking for,” she says, surprisingly sheepish for someone who knows her way around a submission choke-out. She recalls her first day of work, which had her going toe-to-toe with one of 2011’s breakout stars, Michael Fassbender. “I showed up and Michael said, ‘You want to run lines?’ And I said, ‘Please.’ It was the first time I’d run lines with an actor,” she says. “He put some whiskey down in front of me and said, ‘OK, let’s do this.’” SASHA PERL-RAVER METRO WORLD NEWS IN HOLLYWOOD CLAUDETTE BARIUS ©2011 FIVE CONTINENTS IMPORTS LLC

Lighten up at NYSC

Feeling extra SAD today? We’ve been hearing mixed reports about Blue Monday — what scientists call the most depressing day of the year. Some think it’s today, while others claim it was last week. But regardless, if the winter season has got you down, try getting active and chilling out. If you want to get active: Sign up for your local New York Sports Club’s new Lighten Up class — a unique blend of cardio and meditation via bright light therapy, which has been proven to treat Seasonal Affective Disorder. The best news: The classes are free until the end of February. www.mysportsclubs.com If you want to chill out: Utilize the power of aromatherapy. “Inhale neroli oil to [gain] clarity, inner strength and improved awareness,” suggests Jane Merten, Senior Brand Manager for essential oils purveyor Aura Cacia. “Take a walk. Stretch. Practice yoga. Massage lavender on your temples. Meditate. Play with your dog. Hug your loved one a minute longer.” METRO/ME

30 days to a new you Don’t rely on shortcuts to lose weight, quit smoking or eat better Your brain needs repetition to learn the new lifestyle you promised yourself in 2012 If the year didn’t begin healthy, you can always start now

W

e’re more than halfway through January, and the party’s over. The holiday binge expired, the hangover wore off and we’re left without excuses for gluttonous behavior. Consequently, we turn to the resolution bandwagon. January is traditionally considered to be the perfect time to create change. Unfortunately, real change rarely lasts. Making change stick requires more than eight-minute abs, Nicorette gum or the South Beach Diet. True change doesn’t allow for shortcuts. It calls for willingness, commitment and repetition. The key element to making change stick is a 30-day practice of repeating new behavior. It’s this month-long repetition that will allow you to truly make your desired change stick. Indeed, neurobiological studies show that 30 days of repeating new behavior reprograms your brain by reversing neural pathways. It’s this reversal that changes your patterns and behaviors, and therefore your life. If you’re inspired to create permanent change, keep it simple and commit to repeating your new behavior for the next

Conservatives must broaden their tent Until the Republicans make their tent more inclusive, they should stop calling President Obama divisive. A comparison of audiences will find those surrounding the president as being more diverse and representative of this nation. Images of monolithic Republican audiences can be challenged as subliminal messages in their advocacy for social conservatism. GLENN HAYES, KEW GARDENS

Cowardly captain is living a fantasy The captain of the ill-fated Costa Concordia reminds me an old seaman telling stories of his adventures. First, he says he stayed aboard until all passengers were off. Then when passengers disputed

STILL KICKING

Tynes kicks winner after punt is muffed Back and forth defensive struggle results in overtime win Vernon Davis killer for Giants’ secondary

20 GIANTS (12-7)

17

GETTY IMAGES

NINERS (14-4)

What went wrong ...

1

Vernon in charge — As bad as Victor Cruz torched the Niners’ defense, 49ers tight end Vernon Davis did the same to Big Blue’s secondary. Davis finished with two scores, including the opening touchdown and another with 5:18 remaining in the third quarter. Davis’s size and speed were too much for any linebacker or safety.

The physical play of Ahmad Bradshaw and the Giants earned them a trip to the Super Bowl in Indianapolis.

What went right for the Giants ...

1

Dancing — Wideout Victor Cruz made the most of the single coverage he saw all afternoon, as he tortured the Niners’ secondary. Cruz’s first half alone would be a great full game for most receivers as he registered eight catches for 125 yards. The final drive put him over 100 in the half.

2

Manning up — If not for Cruz’s heroics, quarterback Eli Manning’s stats wouldn’t have been as inflated, but what was more impressive was the way Manning managed the game. Although the weather conditions were less than ideal, and the footballs were slick, Manning was efficient in the red zone against the league’s fourth-best red-zone defense. He played well considering the elements.

3

19

MONDAY, JANUARY 23, 2012

MUFFED! — After Manning took a bad sack, the Giants were forced to punt. And for the second time a botched reception of the punt cost the 49ers the ball. The first time, it set up the touchdown that gave the Giants the lead. The second time, in overtime, it gave the Giants a chance to set up the game-winning touchdown. Lawrence Tynes banged it through to send them to Super Bowl XLVI. TONY WILLIAMS

2

Running in place — The running game was the Achilles heel for the Giants’ offense all season, particularly in short-yardage situations, and Sunday was no different. Shortyardage deficiencies cost the Giants at least four points, as they eschewed a long field goal in favor of calling Jacobs’s number. They didn’t convert.

3

Overtime — The Giants won the toss and really struggled on offense, but a fumbled punt fixed it. METRO/TW

Steelers fire OC

Ben Roethlisberger might be the biggest name in Pittsburgh, but he still doesn’t get everything he wants. ESPN reported yesterday that Steelers offensive coordinator Bruce Arians has been fired, even though Roethlisberger was in favor of keeping him. Arians has been the coordinator since 2007 when Mike Tomlin took over as head coach. Owner Art Rooney reportedly wants to focus on more of a ball-control offense.

Gronk injures ankle in win Bernard Pollard clearly has something against the Patriots. The Ravens safety, who knocked Tom Brady out for the 2008 season with an ACL injury while with the Chiefs, injured tight end Rob Gronkowksi yesterday

on a tackle in the third quarter. The burgeoning star got his right leg caught under him, twisting the ankle. He had to be helped off the field and did not return. A tackle by Pollard also tore Wes Welker’s ACL in the 2009 season. METRO

Patriots earn trip to Indy thanks to shank New England beats Ravens, 23-20 Cundiff misses 32-yarder with 11 seconds left Brady TD put Pats up

What went right ...

JIM ROGASH/GETTY IMAGES

1

QB dive — On a second-and-goal from the 1-yard line, Brady appeared to score on a QB sneak. Instead, despite questionable evidence it was overturned. Two plays later, the Pats went for it on fourth down and converted.

2

Evans and Hell —Before the shanked kick by Cundiff, Joe Flacco found Lee Evans in the end zone for what would’ve been the goahead score. Instead, Evans dropped the pass and Cundiff missed the game-tying field goal.

3

Tom Brady celebrates his one-yard dive into the end zone for what would be the game-winner.

Sometimes it’s better to be lucky and good. The Patriots played well, but in the end it took an ugly missed field goal by Billy Cundiff to secure the 23-20 win and a spot in Super Bowl XLVI. New England and Baltimore

home win of the season for the Nets. Both Deron Williams and Anthony Morrow were critical of the arena after the team shot a miserable 3-for-23 from 3-point range in Saturday’s loss to the Thunder. Rookie MarShon Brooks, one of the highlights of an otherwise miserable season, led all scorers with 20 points. Williams came within one rebound of a triple-double with 19 points, 10 assists and nine rebounds. Morrow came off the bench, but played most of the game, scoring 19.

The Nets had 47 total rebounds, 13 47 more than Charlotte. Kris Humphries and Williams both had 10. The team had 16 oensive boards. The Nets ran out to a 58-42 lead at the half and managed to hold on despite being outscored in the third and fourth quarters. Kemba Walker led the Bobcats with 16 points. MARK OSBORNE

ACNE

Eczema Psoriasis Rosacea Rashes

By Dr. C. Hammoud Ph.D.

#60 Guaranteed better than all others they used say dozens of delighted users with full names and towns on the Bell website. Works by cleansing blood inside rather than attacking skin from the outside and leaving the actual cause untreated. Here are a few examples:

I had terrible Acne for 3 years and tried products with Benzoyl Peroxide, Aloe Vera and others. After 4 days taking the Bell natural product #60 it started to clear up my skin. My skin changed from terrible to beautiful. Mylene Theriault, 19, Sorel-Tracy, QC In 2 days my son’s face completely cleared up of acne. My son is 15 and suffered for 3 years. We used many products like laser, Neem that did not work or burned his skin. Veronica Marden, Seminole, TX Unbelievable acne free beautiful skin Last couple of years I had acne and tried every product and antibiotics. Results with #60 were unbelievable. Thanks for giving me beautiful skin and my self-esteem. Nelisa Royer, 28, Doral, FL Within 6 days eczema cleared up completely. I believe #60 addresses the cause internally instead of the symptoms. Latifa Boutshik, 43, North York, ON I had severe psoriasis over 95% of my body. Last 5 years I have stunned every doctor and dermatologist. I spent tons of money on remedies. After I got Bell #60, I’ve never seen anything work as fast in my life. Within 2 days I saw my skin clearing up. I’m speechless. It was inexpensive compared with what I spent before. Jessica Shantz, 25, Dawson Creek, BC All statements made on the Bell website are sent by delighted users. All are real people. Most have listed phone numbers and can be called for advice. No money is paid to them. Their reward is the relief they are getting. All say #60 works within days not months, not years. It’s more effective than what they used before. It is less expensive (some acne suppliers ship monthly and charge monthly, which may amount to large sums yearly). No side effects were reported on #60. TRUE EVIDENCE that we are helping people.

High Blood Pressure? High blood pressure is called the silent killer. If your BP is higher than normal, try to get it down to about 120/80. For many people it is easy to control. If it does not work for you we refund your money. On our website you will find over 50 testimonials with full names and towns from all over USA and Canada. Most of them have listed phone numbers and are happy to talk about the relief they had. No money was paid for testimonials.

Dr. C. Hammoud M.H., Ph.D. recommends this effective fish peptide blood pressure natural product. So does Dr. Julian Whitaker M.D. I was on 3 blood pressure drugs that did not work well. After starting Bell #26 my readings are generally well below 120/80. Dona A. Anderson, 76, Sooke, BC My blood pressure was 157/90 and I had side effects from prescription drugs. I bought a monitor. After 6 months on Bell #26 I was down to 120/80. Toni L. McCuistion, 52, Elizabethtown, PA At work my driver’s medical test was too high at 170/100. After taking Bell #26 for a few days I went down to 128/84 which allowed me to pass my work medical. Kris Geier, 48, Windsor, ON.Bell is helping people everywhere.

SNORING?

SLEEP APNEA?

Most older men and many women snore and have sleep apnea (gasping for air) : To my surprise, after taking Bell Snoring & Sleep Apnea Relief #23 I really didn’t snore or gasp for air anymore. I sleep through the night and feel rested and refreshed in the morning. Mark Wilson, 40, Hudson, NH Sleep apnea capsules worked first night! For last 15 years I had sleep apnea and my doctor made me buy a CPAP machine, which I could not use. Finally Bell #23 helped the first night and every night thereafter. Like a miracle. Unbelievable. Karen Braun, 67, Glace Bay, NS For 20 years I was waking up frequently gasping for air. During the day I would start napping every time I would sit down, because I was tired. Since taking Bell #23 sleeping 6 hours is heaven. It made a substantial change in my life. Mary C. Myrick, 62, Jackson, MS It is such a joy not having to use the CPAP machine. I have had sleep apnea for 10 years. I was skeptical about Bell Snoring & Sleep Apnea Eze #23. After #23 using it for 3 weeks my wife says there is no more snoring or gasping for breath or stoppage of breathing. It is such a joy to be able to roll to left or right with no hose or mask to deal with and can get up with no restrictions. Thank you Bell for a great relief. I suggest anyone with these problems to try it. You will be overjoyed with the results. Wayne Burse, 63, Beamsville, ON Bell is helping people everywhere.

Cholesterol Control Cholesterol and triglycerides under control! For the last 5-6 years I have been told that my cholesterol and triglycerides were out of line. After taking Bell Cholesterol Control #14 my doctor said he was amazed about the change. This is a good product. Jerome Nettles, 51, Monroeville, AL All statin drugs gave me pain! My doctor tried them all on me. So he said to try a natural product. After taking Bell Cholesterol Control #14 I have no more pain. I’m so happy about this. Deanna O’Neil, 63, Tecumseh, ON. I had great success with all Bell health products! In the last 2 years I had relief with Bell Prostate Ezee Flow Tea, HDL Cholesterol Management, Blood Pressure Combo and Stem Cell Activator. I love your products. They all work for me. Great results. That’s all that matters. Basil Richards, 49, S.W. Ranches, FL 20 years of high cholesterol alleviated! I had high cholesterol for 20 years and drugs didn’t agree with me. After taking Bell Cholesterol Control #14 for 6 months I had a check-up and was surprised about the big improvement. I was delighted and extremely happy and so was my doctor. Norma Hrysio, 65, Lac Du Bonnet, #14 MB. We supply TRUE EVIDENCE.
