Wall Street protesters were arrested Sunday night during a march that started at Washington Square Park and ended at Tompkins Square at about 10:30 p.m. The crowd of about 300 gathered in solidarity with protesters who were arrested in Oakland over the weekend during a raucous clash with police. One World Trade Center was valued yesterday to cost the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey $3.8 billion to build, making it far and away the world's most expensive office tower. That new price tag, revealed in The Wall Street Journal, is mostly due to unprecedented security measures implemented at the building. One World Trade, formerly nicknamed the Freedom Tower, sits atop a reinforced podium, designed to protect the tower from the path of a blast, and steel reinforces its elevator shafts. METRO/CB

The prettiest proletariat: Labor rights en vogue Model hopes to form alliance for industry rights Details abuse of young, vulnerable models Her efforts lauded by local industry experts New York models are banding together to become comrades in couture. With Fashion Week around the corner, beginning on Feb. 9, model Sara Ziff is launching the Model Alliance next Monday, a nonprofit organization that she says will advocate for models’ rights. “The modeling industry is essentially an unregulated industry,” said Ziff. She hopes to address the recurring problems she said many models endure, such as

child labor, sexual assault, eating disorders, and fraudulent financial practices. Some models are pressured into performing sexual favors in exchange for work, Ziff said, recalling one colleague who was asked to pleasure a photographer in order to be cast in his shoot. “She felt violated,” Ziff said. “This was a top fashion photographer who is well established and powerful. Slowing for safety or sway? NEW YORK. Following a series

of grisly deaths on the city subway system last week, wherein three people were hit and killed by trains, subway conductors are being asked by their union to take “extra care” when pulling trains into stations, according to the New York Daily News. The Transit Workers Union Local 100 is reportedly

drafting flyers asking conductors to slow down to prevent more injuries. However, some argue the real goal is a jab at MTA/TWU contract negotiations, which have reached a standstill. Under state law, it is illegal for public transit workers to plan a strike or a work slowdown. Union heads deny the suggestion. METRO/EAE

More than half of 700 riders surveyed said their subway commute has gotten worse.

Ridership on the New York City subway system has increased 30 percent since 1998. But the happiness of straphangers hasn’t kept pace, a new report released yesterday found. Transportation Alternatives, a rider advocacy group, surveyed subway and bus riders on the quality of their public travel experiences over the past three years. According to the survey, participants were asked the question, “Since 2009, has your commute on the NYC subway or bus gotten better or worse?” Of nearly 700 respondents, a whopping 61 percent said their commute had worsened since 2009, while just 13 percent said it got better. “This survey confirms what every bus and subway rider in this city knows,” said Paul Steely White, director of Transportation Alternatives. “After

NEW YORK. While Transportation Alternatives blasted the MTA, it also singled out state officials for “stealing” dedicated transit funds. “Beyond the frustration of a longer commute and higher fares, these results should be a wake-up call to our leaders in state govern-

years of declining transit funding from Albany and the resulting service cuts, our commutes have gotten worse.” White cited higher fares, longer wait times and overcrowded trains as all contributing to the lower-quality experiences. He said riders haven’t forgotten how service cuts the MTA enacted in 2010 cost them two subway lines, 36 bus routes and 570 bus stops. Gene Russianoff, director of the New York City Straphangers’ Campaign, said he wasn’t surprised by the survey results. “There have been two fare hikes and the worst service cuts in a generation,” Russianoff said. “New Yorkers hate paying more for less.” The MTA declined to comment on the survey. Mayor blamed for lack of 9/11 funds Council members amped up pressure on Mayor Michael Bloomberg yesterday to do more to accelerate research about a possible 9/11

cancer link. Last year, a report released by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health found there was not enough evidence to determine the inhalation of World Trade Center dust caused cancer. The city Department of Health and Mental Hygiene is currently conducting its own cancer study, but Dr. Carolyn Greene from the department testified at a Council hearing yesterday that the city needs more resources to conduct its research. Manhattan Councilman Fernando Cabrera blamed the lack of funding squarely on Bloomberg. “I agree with you, you should receive this funding and that’s the job of the mayor,” said Cabrera. “The mayor had 10 years to be able to get enough funding.” Bronx Councilman Oliver Koppell agreed, saying the mayor should be fighting harder to get cancer included as one of the health conditions

Dalisha Adams, 26, was charged with two counts of endangering the welfare of a child after she allegedly dumped her daughters, Diani, 3, and Dominae, 2, out in the cold on Sunday afternoon. Police found the girls wandering the streets of Canarsie. According to a report in the New York Daily News, they were left in their winter coats, holding disposable diapers. The sisters were only able to tell reporters and police, "Mommy just left us on the sidewalk and drove away." Cops said the girls only knew that their mother was named Dalisha and drove a white car. Could another Republican join the race to face Obama? GETTY IMAGES

Is it too late for another Republican to jump into the 2012 U.S. presidential race? Mitt Romney is riding high in Florida and threatening to take charge of the Republican nomination with a win in Tuesday’s primary there. But even as some party conservatives appear to be coming around to supporting him, many are concerned that the bitter fight between Romney and Newt Gingrich has damaged both of them to the extent that neither would be able to defeat President Obama in the Nov. 6 election. Grassroots conservative activists are worried that Gingrich’s attacks on Romney’s business background have given Democrats a big hammer to use against the former Massachusetts governor this fall. Meanwhile, mainstream Republicans think Romney is

than the corner pastry shop. The Romney-Gingrich battle has left many Americans in a sour mood about the Repub-

lican contenders. So is there a chance that a popular Republican might come to the rescue and snatch

the presidential nomination? Analysts say there is still a sliver of time for another Republican candidate to jump into the race. This year’s campaign calendar is loaded with spring contests, meaning a Republican could enter the race in early February and still compete directly in states with at least 1,200 of the 2,282 or so Republican delegates, according to the University of Virginia Center for Politics. The officers were charged with harassing and using excessive force against Latinos. His resignation comes a week after the federal indictment was unveiled. Last week, Maturo, in response to a reporter’s question about what he would do for Latinos, quipped, “I might have tacos.” Although the mayor later apologized, angered Latino advocates sent a mountain of 500 tacos to Town Hall the next day to draw a spotlight to what was variously viewed as ineptness, racism or some combination of the two. Holocaust drama recreates dark tale of survival in the Polish sewers during WW2 Krystyna Chiger’s memoirs now Oscar-nominated movie Metro Q&A In 1943, a group of Polish Jews daringly sought refuge in the sewer system of Nazi-occupied city Lvov. Krystyna Chiger, then 8 years old, was one of them. Her survival story has been transformed in “In Darkness”, nominated at next month’s Oscars. As the world marks Holocaust Remembrance Day, Metro speaks with Krystyna about her harrowing past. You were only 8 when you were hiding from the Germans in the sewers for 14 months. What was the worst? Stink? Danger of death by drowning? Rats?

It is very difficult to differentiate. All of the above were the worst I have ever experienced.

You wrote down your childhood memories in “The Girl in the Green Sweater.” What happened to this sweater?

My green sweater was with me for many years. Eventually I decided to donate it to the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C. You write about the Pole who helped you survive in the gutters. Do you think this quashes the belief Poles were anti-Semitic?

The answer is no. Leopold Socha was unfortunately one of not too many Polish individuals who put his and his family life in great danger. ... Every year on the day of remembrance, I light the candle and say a prayer for his soul. In recognition for his commitment, his name is displayed among the

Not too many human beings could stand the terrible environment the sewers could offer; Socha was unable to take care of more than a few and it was his and his two friends’ choice.

Those who could not stand the unbearable conditions went outside and were murdered by Nazis. Some others drowned in the sewers. How was it watching [director] Agnieszka Holland’s film “In Darkness,” which tells the story of your survival?

Remembering those days is very painful, and I don’t like to go back to those memories. But I am forcing myself to talk about it because I fully understand that the history may repeat itself. f you are unlucky enough to live in North Korea, your motivations and desires don’t matter. You are told who you are to be and if you resist, you will be sent to a labor camp where you will do hard labor until you die an early death. The state issues your clothing and shoes and ration cards. Thanks to government censorship and its propaganda machine, everyone reads the same media and prescribes to the same philosophy: Working towards the common good. It’s this lack of individuality in the face of such brutality that was attractive to writer Adam Johnson. So much so he set his new novel, “The Orphan Master’s Son,” within the totalitarian regime. Johnson tells us that it wasn’t the mystery nor the creepiness of North Korea that won him over (although that was certainly tempting for a

He clarifies: “Here in the West, you are the main person in the story of your life — everyone else is a secondary character. We have motivations and desires and, in the end, we change and grow and

gain wisdom in some way,” says Johnson. “In North Korea, there is one central character — the Dear Leader — and 23 million secondary characters. Everyone is constricted to be an unwilling participant in a national narrative they have no control over.” Despite having no free will, Johnsons’ lead character, Pak Jun Do, is able to endure and thrive and create his own destiny. With a touch of magical realism, Johnson’s Pak Jun Do undergoes some unbelievable situations. But, then again, North Korea is an unbelievable place. “How do people inhabit themselves in a world that is so circumscribed?” Johnston asks rhetorically. “How do you become an individual? Those are questions I’m fascinated with.” DOROTHY ROBINSON

Game on: It’s Puppy Bowl time Animal Planet’s annual match is this weekend Ref Dan Schachner on why he has the best job in the world During Puppy Bowl VIII, 58 puppies will stumble over their oversize paws while, ideally, making it into the end zone with a chew toy. They might just tumble around mid-field. Making cute little puppy faces at the puppy cam is also an option. It doesn’t really matter — everyone wins here. We checked in with ref Dan Schachner before the big game to talk puppy strategy — and figure out how to steal his job.

We have a term called “pancaking” — when you flatten like a pancake — and that’s a reason to give the puppies a little break. Which dogs are the most athletic?

The shih tzus are cute, but the more robust breeds are the ones that are going to score. Surprisingly, the dachshunds are great running backs. They seem kind of quiet and baffled at first, but when they get that chew toy they score.

What are your responsibilities as ref?

Be honest: Does cuteness help when it comes to calls?

Cuteness doesn’t affect me one way or the other. But what I do have to turn a blind eye to are the puppy fouls — the premature watering of the lawn. We have to let some of those go or we’d never get on with the game. That said, if there’s a really big foul left in the middle of the field, that will result in at least a 10-15 yard penalty. super bowl guide

Halftime is of the essence As Madonna prepares to entertain however many billion people will tune into the Super Bowl, we look at the most notable performances of the past 20 years

Though this is the 46th Super Bowl, programmers have only been bringing big-name acts in for the halftime show since about 1991, when New Kids on the Block sang “Step by Step. Before that, the entertainment was mostly marching bands from the state where the teams were playing or performers who didn’t exactly reflect the tastes of the masses, like Carol Channing. We re-watched the halftime shows and picked our five favorites.

5. Janet Jackson and Justin Timberlake, 2004

1. U2, 2002 It was fewer than five months since the attacks of 9/11, and this three-song set from Dublin’s finest did a heroic job of honoring those who died that day and saluting the country that U2 has always wished they were from, as Bono revealed an American flag close to his heart. Criticize Bono all you want for pandering, but even now it’s hard not to get

2. Prince, 2007

3. Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band, 2009 misty as the names of 9/11 victims scroll down a huge screen as U2 plays “MLK and “Where the Streets Have No Name.

performed a medley of seven songs, only three of which were his. He touched upon others by Queen, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Bob Dylan and the Foo Fighters. But since he is Prince, he obviously made all of these tunes his own.

His royal purpleness has always been known for his stadiumsized ego, but what made this performance unique is that despite performing on a stage shaped like the symbol that once served as his name, the dude

To condense a Springsteen concert experience into 13 minutes sounds almost as preposterous as trying to fit the complete works of Shakespeare onto a Bazooka Joe comic. But the Boss was able to fill a four-song suite with whole lot of hokey fun, including a gospel choir, a flagthrowing ref, a knee-slide across the stage, some micstand gymnastics and the return to the stage of Big Man Clarence Clemons, who had just had both knees replaced only a few months previously.

4. Michael Jackson, 1993 Billed as “an unprecedented Super Bowl spectacular, this show by the King of Pop was reportedly one of the most watched in TV history and would change the way networks programmed halftime. This was MJ just months before he was accused of sexually abusing children. It’s eerie now to hear him say, “no one should have to suffer, especially our children, but the performance itself was touching (not the bad kind) as he sang “Heal the World, and the crowd held up placards to form drawings by kids.

Call it “Nipplegate if you must, but we always preferred “Super Boob Sunday. Watching this performance by Michael’s little sister, it’s amazing how the phrase “wardrobe malfunction became the 00’s version of “I didn’t inhale. Seriously, we were supposed to believe that Janet just happened to be wearing a metal sunburst around her areola? Regardless of how planned or unplanned the “bet I’ll have you nekkid by the end of this song ending was, the duet with JT on “Rock Your Body definitely still holds up eight(!) years later.

That film clip on the evening news of Christina Aguilera at Etta James’ funeral service singing the great James’ signature pop classic, “At Last,” made me wonder where Ms. Aguilera got her vocal training — in the Chicago Stockyards, perhaps? She absolutely butchered a perfectly beautiful song! Go to your room, Christina, and stay there until you tone it down.

Meanwhile, Mr. Obama invested in Solyndra and many other companies — many of which have gone bankrupt only a couple of years after receiving millions of American citizens’ tax dollars without Congressional approval. Mr. Romney is in the business to do such things and is knowledgeable regarding investments. If Obama was a portfolio manager he would be fired!

destinations ALL IMAGES COURTESY OF THE RANCH AT ROCK CREEK

+ More Montana When to go Plan to visit during summer and early fall, when fishing and camping conditions are best. On average, temperatures will reach 80 degrees by day and drop to the 50s at night.

Try the local elk.

What to eat Montana may not seem like a culinary destination, but that’s changing quickly. A bounty of local produce and traditionally raised organic beef, lamb and elk are attracting top culinary talent. Chef Josh Drage of The Ranch at Rock Creek is one of the innovators of Montana’s modern rustic cuisine, dishing up bison short ribs with cilantro chutney and elk rib eye with flathead cherry demi-glace. Beer-lovers can sample suds from more than 20 microbreweries. Saddle up at a local bar and order a Kettle House Cold Smoke Scotch Ale or local favorite Moose Drool. For a treat, stop by Philipsburg’s Sweet Palace, the second largest candy store in the country.

Home on the range in

Montana

Yeeeee-haw! You can be a cowboy — or cowgirl — too.

From horseback riding to fly fishing, a trip to Big Sky Country is all about variety Tuck into some local organic meat, produce and craft beers Where to stay The Ranch at Rock Creek (www.theranchatrockcreek .com) offers the best of Montana recreation by day and fine dining by night. Situated on 10 square miles of wilderness just north of the Pintler Mountains, the ranch offers fly fishing, horseback riding, hiking, sport shooting and archery, as well as a full-service

What to do Montana’s wide-open spaces make it ideal terrain for hiking, horseback riding and biking. Here’s what we like to do in Big Sky Country:

spa. New to ranch life? The ranch provides your equipment, from footwear to fly reels.

Camping: Montana houses two spectacular national parks, Glacier and Yellowstone (of Old Faithful fame). Just stopping through? Try Glacier’s Going-to-the-Sun Road, a 50-mile drive through some of the park’s best scenery. Fly fishing: Montana is home to the world’s best fly fishing, in a network of sparkling rivers and creeks. Hire a guide to show you where the locals cast. Also, read Missoula native Norman Maclean’s “A River Runs Through It.” Ghost hunting: During a mining boom in the late 1800s, a number of small towns and mining camps were created in the western part of the state. Abandoned long ago, many of the ghost towns are preserved and are open for tours.

Giants arrive in Indy Team in Super Bowl city, five days from game Media Day circus today The Giants set down in the home of Super Bowl XLVI just before 3 p.m. yesterday. The team is healthy. Most of the game plan is in place. Now they just have to wait five more days to play the game. The team immediately boarded buses to the hotel and spoke to the media soon after. “Once you get to Indianapolis your schedule is thrown off,” said quarterback Eli Manning yesterday afternoon. “I told the guys when we get [here], focus on getting into the game plan. The mindset is this is a business trip and get ready to play our best football.” The team won’t begin practicing until tomorrow, however. Super Bowl Media Day will take up all of today, and likely have very little to do with the actual game.

Media Day has earned the reputation of being a circus thanks to the amount of media taking part that aren’t from sports outlets. Entertainment shows and publicity stunt reporters hog much of the questioning. The team is trying to focus on nothing but the game, something aided by their Super Bowl experience. However, while 19 players on the team have played in the big game, key contributors like Jason Pierre-Paul and Victor Cruz have not. “The buildup to the football game, no matter how you want to present it, is something that these young guys have never gone through,” head coach Tom Coughlin said. On Bill Parcells Both Tom Coughlin and Patriots coach Bill Belichick coached under former Giants head coach Bill Parcells. “He’s always been an exceptional defensive coach, trained by the best, by [Bill] Parcells,” Coughlin said about Belichick. “What anyone who was around Parcells for any length of time learned was how to win.”
