With Fashion Week around the corner, beginning on Feb. 9, model Sara Ziff is launching the Model Alliance next Monday, a nonprofit organization that she says will advocate for models’ rights. “The modeling industry is essentially an unregulated industry,” said Ziff. She hopes to address the recurring problems she said many models endure, such as

child labor, sexual assault, eating disorders, and fraudulent financial practices. Some models are pressured into performing sexual favors in exchange for work, Ziff said, recalling one colleague who was asked to pleasure a photographer in order to be cast in his shoot. “She felt violated,” Ziff said. “This was a top fashion photographer who is well established and powerful. More than half of 700 riders surveyed said their subway commute has gotten worse.

Ridership on the New York City subway system has increased 30 percent since 1998. But the happiness of straphangers hasn’t kept pace, a new report released yesterday found. Transportation Alternatives, a rider advocacy group, surveyed subway and bus riders on the quality of their public travel experiences over the past three years. According to the survey, participants were asked the question, “Since 2009, has your commute on the NYC subway or bus gotten better or worse?” Of nearly 700 respondents, a whopping 61 percent said their commute had worsened since 2009, while just 13 percent said it got better. “This survey confirms what every bus and subway rider in this city knows,” said Paul Steely White, director of Transportation Alternatives. “After

Last year, a report released by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health found there was not enough evidence to determine the inhalation of World Trade Center dust caused cancer. The city Department of Health and Mental Hygiene is currently conducting its own cancer study, but Dr. Carolyn Greene from the department testified at a Council hearing yesterday that the city needs more resources to conduct its research. Manhattan Councilman Fernando Cabrera blamed the lack of funding squarely on Bloomberg. “I agree with you, you should receive this funding and that’s the job of the mayor,” said Cabrera. “The mayor had 10 years to be able to get enough funding.” Bronx Councilman Oliver Koppell agreed, saying the mayor should be fighting harder to get cancer included as one of the health conditions

Mother charged with abandoning daughters A Canarsie mom was charged by police yesterday with abandoning her two toddler girls on the sidewalk Sunday. Dalisha Adams, 26, was charged with two counts of endangering the welfare of a child after she allegedly dumped her daughters, Diani, 3, and Dominae, 2, out in the cold on Sunday afternoon. Police found the girls wandering the streets of Canarsie. According to a report in the New York Daily News, they were left in their winter coats, holding disposable diapers. The sisters were only able to tell reporters and police, "Mommy just left us on the sidewalk and drove away." Cops said the girls only knew that their mother was named Dalisha and drove a white car. She turned herself in to the 69th Precinct later that night, at 11:30 p.m. “I was shocked,” Diquale Ranger, 17, the girls’ uncle, told the News of Adams’ arrest. The hairless Xoloitzcuintli, the official dog of Mexico, will be one of the new breeds in competition at the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show next month. The annual show, now in its 136th year, will be Feb. 13 and 14 at Madison Square Garden. And the Xoloitzcuintli — pronounced “show-low-eats-queen-tlee” — isn’t the only new pooch seeking top prize. New breeds also in competition this year include the American English Coonhound, the Cesky Terrier, the Finnish Lapphund and the Norwegian Lundehund. Is it too late for another Republican to jump into the 2012 U.S. presidential race? Mitt Romney is riding high in Florida and threatening to take charge of the Republican nomination with a win in Tuesday’s primary there. But even as some party conservatives appear to be coming around to supporting him, many are concerned that the bitter fight between Romney and Newt Gingrich has damaged both of them to the extent that neither would be able to defeat President Obama in the Nov. 6 election. Grassroots conservative activists are worried that Gingrich’s attacks on Romney’s business background have given Democrats a big hammer to use against the former Massachusetts governor this fall. Meanwhile, mainstream Republicans think Romney is

Leonard Gallo of the East Haven Police Department abruptly resigned yesterday amid a racial profiling scandal in which four officers were arrested and the mayor’s clumsy handling of the case enraged Latino advocates nationwide. The officers were charged with harassing and using excessive force against Latinos. His resignation comes a week after the federal indictment was unveiled. Last week, Maturo, in response to a reporter’s question about what he would do for Latinos, quipped, “I might have tacos.” Although the mayor later apologized, angered Latino advocates sent a mountain of 500 tacos to Town Hall the next day to draw a spotlight to what was variously viewed as ineptness, racism or some combination of the two. Holocaust drama recreates dark tale of survival in the Polish sewers during WW2 Krystyna Chiger’s memoirs now Oscar-nominated movie Metro Q&A In 1943, a group of Polish Jews daringly sought refuge in the sewer system of Nazi-occupied city Lvov. Krystyna Chiger, then 8 years old, was one of them. Her survival story has been transformed in “In Darkness”, nominated at next month’s Oscars. As the world marks Holocaust Remembrance Day, Metro speaks with Krystyna about her harrowing past. You were only 8 when you were hiding from the Germans in the sewers for 14 months. What was the worst? Stink? Danger of death by drowning? Rats?

It is very difficult to differentiate. All of the above were the worst I have ever experienced.

You wrote down your childhood memories in “The Girl in the Green Sweater.” What happened to this sweater?

My green sweater was with me for many years. Eventually I decided to donate it to the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C. You write about the Pole who helped you survive in the gutters. Do you think this quashes the belief Poles were anti-Semitic?

The answer is no. Leopold Socha was unfortunately one of not too many Polish individuals who put his and his family life in great danger. ... Every year on the day of remembrance, I light the candle and say a prayer for his soul. In recognition for his commitment, his name is displayed among the

Not too many human beings could stand the terrible environment the sewers could offer; Socha was unable to take care of more than a few and it was his and his two friends’ choice.

Those who could not stand the unbearable conditions went outside and were murdered by Nazis. Some others drowned in the sewers. How was it watching [director] Agnieszka Holland’s ﬁlm “In Darkness,” which tells the story of your survival?

Remembering those days is very painful, and I don’t like to go back to those memories. But I am forcing myself to talk about it because I fully understand that the history may repeat itself. And so, for the future generation, I do talk and write about it so it will not be forgotten. Agnieszka’s film is so realistic that I shivered and cried for its entire viewing. You are told who you are to be and if you resist, you will be sent to a labor camp where you will do hard labor until you die an early death. The state issues your clothing and shoes and ration cards. Thanks to government censorship and its propaganda machine, everyone reads the same media and prescribes to the same philosophy: Working towards the common good. It’s this lack of individuality in the face of such brutality that was attractive to writer Adam Johnson. So much so he set his new novel, “The Orphan Master’s Son,” within the totalitarian regime. Johnson tells us that it wasn’t the mystery nor the creepiness of North Korea that won him over (although that was certainly tempting for a

With a touch of magical realism, Johnson’s Pak Jun Do undergoes some unbelievable situations. But, then again, North Korea is an unbelievable place. “How do people inhabit themselves in a world that is so circumscribed?” Johnston asks rhetorically. “How do you become an individual? Be honest: Does cuteness help when it comes to calls?

Halftime is of the essence As Madonna prepares to entertain however many billion people will tune into the Super Bowl, we look at the most notable performances of the past 20 years

Though this is the 46th Super Bowl, programmers have only been bringing big-name acts in for the halftime show since about 1991, when New Kids on the Block sang â&#x20AC;&#x153;Step by Step.â&#x20AC;? Before that, the entertainment was mostly marching bands from the state where the teams were playing or performers who didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t exactly reflect the tastes of the masses, like Carol Channing. We re-watched the halftime shows and picked our five favorites.

5. Janet Jackson and Justin Timberlake, 2004

U2, 2002 It was fewer than five months since the attacks of 9/11, and this three-song set from Dublinâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s finest did a heroic job of honoring those who died that day and saluting the country that U2 has always wished they were from, as Bono revealed an American flag close to his heart. Criticize Bono all you want for pandering, but even now itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s hard not to get

This was MJ just months before he was accused of sexually abusing children. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s eerie now to hear him say, â&#x20AC;&#x153;no one should have to suffer, especially our children,â&#x20AC;? but the performance itself was touching (not the bad kind) as he sang â&#x20AC;&#x153;Heal the World,â&#x20AC;? and the crowd held up placards to form drawings by kids.

Call it â&#x20AC;&#x153;Nipplegateâ&#x20AC;? if you must, but we always preferred â&#x20AC;&#x153;Super Boob Sunday.â&#x20AC;? Watching this performance by Michaelâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s little sister, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s amazing how the phrase â&#x20AC;&#x153;wardrobe malfunctionâ&#x20AC;? became the 00â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s version of â&#x20AC;&#x153;I didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t inhale.â&#x20AC;? Seriously, we were supposed to believe that Janet just happened to be wearing a metal sunburst around her areola? Regardless of how planned or unplanned the â&#x20AC;&#x153;bet Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll have you nekkid by the end of this songâ&#x20AC;? ending was, the duet with JT on â&#x20AC;&#x153;Rock Your Bodyâ&#x20AC;? definitely still holds up eight(!) years later.

Giants arrive in Indy Team in Super Bowl city, five days from game Media Day circus today The Giants set down in the home of Super Bowl XLVI just before 3 p.m. yesterday. The team is healthy. Most of the game plan is in place. Now they just have to wait five more days to play the game. The team immediately boarded buses to the hotel and spoke to the media soon after. “Once you get to Indianapolis your schedule is thrown off,” said quarterback Eli Manning yesterday afternoon. “I told the guys when we get [here], focus on getting into the game plan. The mindset is this is a business trip and get ready to play our best football.” The team won’t begin practicing until tomorrow, however. Super Bowl Media Day will take up all of today, and likely have very little to do with the actual game.
