Bevilacqua’s testimony likely to be read to jury Legal expert says prosecutors could gain from a jury not being able to see fragile cardinal in court Survivors claim testimony was key for closure The death of Cardinal Anthony Bevilacqua on Tuesday will have a minimal impact on the upcoming cases of three priests accused of sexual abuse, according to those close to the case. Bevilacqua’s death came one day after a court reaffirmed an earlier decision that he was fit to testify. The charges came to light after a scathing 2005 grand jury report named the three offenders, along with 60 others, and harshly rebuked Bevilacqua for allowing them to continue practicing despite having knowledge of the abuse. Defense lawyer Chuck Peruto Jr., who previously represented one of the three priests charged, said Bevilacqua’s absence will be helpful to the prosecution, if it has any effect at all. “The cardinal already went through his direct and

Gov.’s officials ease standards for welfare After receiving heavy criticism, Gov. Tom Corbett’s administration has relaxed its plan for residents to receive government assistance. The asset test would determine those who are eligible for the Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program. Under the proposed guidelines, the limit for regular households would be $5,500, and $9,000 for households with an elderly or disabled member. The previous proposal set a limit of $2,000 for regular households, which would have been the most stringent standards, critics claimed. The Pennsylvania Depart-
ment of Public Welfare submitted the final proposal yesterday to the federal government for approval. Despite the backtracking, officials insisted that the asset test is necessary. “Reinstating asset testing to the SNAP program is an important first step toward preserving limited taxpayer resources for the truly needy,” DPW Secretary Gary D. Alexander said in a news release. “The asset test ensures every public dollar we have goes directly to those who need it most.” SOLOMON D. LEACH sleach@metro.us

The preliminary IPO filing sets the stage for a May market of the world’s largest social network.
The company founded by Mark Zuckerberg in a Harvard dorm room in 2004 picked Morgan Stanley to take the coveted “lead left” role in what is expected to be the largest IPO ever to emerge from Silicon Valley. The preliminary IPO filing sets the stage for a May market of the world's largest social network, IFR reported, a comingout party that will dwarf almost any before that, including Google Inc.'s $2 billion IPO. Fresh off Florida win, Romney loosens lips
Mitt Romney’s campaign is financed in large part by incredibly wealthy donors. The average contribution to Romney’s Restore Our Future super PAC was $103,000; in contrast, the average donation to President Obama’s super PAC was only $55. JOE RAEDLE/GETTY IMAGES

itt Romney, by his own admission, doesn’t really care about America’s poor. At least, that’s one of the big campaign stories making the rounds following the handsome .01-percenter’s win in Florida on Tuesday. But is it true? Let’s take a closer look. On CNN yesterday, Romney said the following: “I’m not concerned about the very poor. We have a safety net there. If it needs repair, I’ll fix it. I’m not concerned about the very rich; they’re doing just fine. I’m concerned about the very heart of America, the 90 percent, 95 percent of Americans who right now are struggling.” Romney thinks America’s poor don’t deserve his concern due to our federal safety net. Unfortunately for the nation’s neediest citizens, his proposals seem aimed at unraveling that net. According to a Tax Policy Center analysis, for instance, the wealthy would be the overwhelming beneficiaries of his tax plan — with the lower classes picking

up a larger share of the tab — due to a proposed reduction in the corporate rate, elimination of the capital gains rate and a repeal of the estate tax, among other regressive ideas. When tax incomes then drop, politicians are going to look for ways to make up the difference from this social net — programs like Social Security and Medicaid. Romney has also endorsed the Paul Ryan budget proposal, which cuts some $3 trillion from such low-income programs.
R
ecently released fundraising data also incline one toward skepticism over Romney’s
claim that he’s not out to help the rich. Considering that his super PAC received $17,947,952.77 from a scant 181 contributors, one can see that the very wealthy make up Romney’s donor base — the implication being that Romney will likely seek to repay this generosity by helping to enrich them even further.
M
oving on, let’s parse Romney’s claim that he’s concerned about the 90-plus percent of struggling Americans, what he would presumably think of as the middle class. (Here we see how, despite claims to the contrary, the Occupy movement has impacted mainstream debate.) According to various estimates, this crucial segment of the American population may actually comprise between 25 percent to 66 percent of households. Assuming a very conservative estimate of 66 percent, with the rich making up the so-called 1 percent, that leaves a third of Americans who can write off any specific Romney concern — 33 percent of the country apparently subsisting on a social net that the presumptive Republican nominee will surely attempt to dismantle while presumably attacking the left over “class warfare.” Classy. See, as Romney himself is countering, context does indeed matter. But then, with Gingrich campaigning against Obama the “food stamp president,” the context in this contest is not exactly heartening.

REASONS TO GO TO THE MOVIES
‘Chronicle’ After three friends make a strange discovery in the woods, they find they’ve gained the power of telekinesis. At first, it’s all fun and games — taunting unsuspecting people with madefor-YouTube pranks — but their new abilities soon bring out a darker side.

‘Big Miracle’ John Krasinski and Drew Barrymore star in this heart-warmer about an Alaskan community coming together to save a family of whales trapped in the Arctic Circle.

‘The Innkeepers’ The Yankee Pedlar Inn has always been haunted, but just as it’s about to close for good, two employees decide to do their own paranormal investigation.
5
‘Albert Nobbs’ Glenn Close’s Oscar-nominated role of Albert Nobbs — a cross-dressing woman in 19th
century Ireland, passing herself off as a man in order to work as a butler — was one she originally played in a stage production in 1982. Spending more than 15 years to get it optioned as a film has obviously paid off.

‘One for the Money’ The only thing funnier than Katherine Heigl starring in a new rom-com as an unlikely bounty hunter is the fact that she wants back in on “Grey’s Anatomy.”

‘The Grey’ Liam Neeson has been killing it with the action movies in the last few years, and his latest — a thriller about a group of unfortunate plane crash survivors stranded in rural

Visitors to the Art Museum’s latest blockbuster exhibition are immediately greeted by the brilliant, iconic image of Van Gogh’s sunflowers. As co-curator Joseph J. Rishel began a tour of the exhibition last week, he gushed that the painting was “a big, bold, straightforward, stand-up, to-the-footlights, fulldisclosure flower piece in the grand tradition.” He then pivoted 90 degrees to point to a much more modest composition, a cropped-in image of a pair of sunflowers against an indeterminate blue background, and stated that this, not the more grandiose golden sunflowers, represented the theme of the show. Here, Rishel said, we find Vincent Van Gogh “looking down between his toes.” “Van Gogh Up Close” features almost 50 paintings by the master artist taking an intimate, close-up view of nature, alongside more than 30 works representing influences and concurrent work in the same vein from Japanese woodblock prints to contemporaneous na-

According to the National Gallery of Canada’s Anabelle Kienle, who co-curated the exhibition, these images of rain and undergrowth and ears of wheat were Van Gogh’s attempt to “look at the most humble motif, look at what’s before your eyes and admire it, but all the while create incredible compositions.”

EXPECT ACTION ON V-DAY
GETTY IMAGES
irsten Dunst and Garrett Hedlund reportedly spent a lot of time together at the Sundance Film Festival. But when they get back to a more regular schedule, the co-stars of the upcoming movie “On the Road might be faced with that question all new couples must deal with: How do we mesh our worlds without giving up what is important to us individually and possibly losing ourselves in the process? If one person wants to be together but the other is pulled toward something else — like a scheduled appointment or a night out with friends — the first might feel rejected and the other might then feel guilty. You might be able to avoid that if you are clear, right from the beginning, about your boundaries.

THE CHAMP IS HERE Kobayashi takes center stage at Wing Bowl XX World’s most famous eater sets goal at 300 wings Key to winning it all is pace, technique CINDY WEBSTER/94WIP
Taking center stage at the crack of dawn Friday, mixed somewhere in between the drunken masses and glittered strippers, will be a legend. Takeru Kobayashi, the man who put competitive eating on the map, will make his wing-eating debut at the Wells Fargo Center in Wing Bowl XX. Kobayashi holds five Guinness World records, including eating titles for hot dogs, meatballs, pasta, hamburgers and Twinkies. “I am very honored to be part of Wing Bowl XX, on the event’s 20th anniversary,” the Japanese eating icon said via a translator. “I went last year, saw the excitement in the stadium. It’s a crazy spectacle, but a good one. I’m just trying to forget all the craziness, and think about me and my food.” Kobayashi has been training since December, starting by eating 100 wings a day. Since arriving in Philadelphia, five days ago, he’s upped it to 200. His goal is 300 wings, which would shatter the record 255 devoured by Jonathan “Super” Squibb last year. Kobayashi didn’t compete in that event, but he did
WING BOWL XX Friday, 5:30-10 a.m. (Tailgate lots open at 4 a.m.)
Pomp and circumstance Kobayashi wouldn’t give us the dirt on his exact plans for his entourage and float. The best ones usually play on Philly sports traditions and feature scantily-clad women. However, he did say that it will be a good one. “It’s one of the things, the culture of the competition, that I’m most looking forward to,” he said.
Wing Bowl co-founder Angelo Cataldi poses with Kobayashi last year, after Kobayashi ate a cheesesteak in 24 seconds.
eat a cheesesteak in 24 seconds during halftime. “I would certainly be disappointed if I didn’t win,” Kobayashi said. “I’ve put in a lot of time and energy to prepare.” The biggest challenge, according to Kobayashi, is the technique. His plan is to focus on one type at a time, not mixing drumsticks and wings.
Quoted
“All I’m thinking is to keep eating and eating and eating, and not think about the end.” TAKERU KOBAYASHI
Three days after Wing Bowl XX, Kobayashi said he will be appearing on a Japanese TV show, where he will “most likely” be challenging for a pizza-eating world record.
“The key is not to lose rhythm and keep pace,” he said. Do that and Kobayashi feels confident he can win. “[If I win] it would prove that I am the greatest eater for chicken wings, because it’s the best event for eating chicken wings in the world,” Kobayashi said. MIKE GREGER
mgreger@metro.us
Could it be a girl’s night at Wing Bowl? It’s been five years since a woman has graced the Wing Bowl stage. Only once — Sonya “The Black Widow” Thomas, in 2004 — has a female walked away as champion. This year, Stephanie Torres is trying to buck the trend. “I’m not expecting to win, but I plan on being with the guys in the last round,” said the 26-yearold California native. “I’m thinking I can do a lot of damage.” Torres, who is nicknamed “Chilita” for her spicy way of life and love of chili peppers, stands at a slight 5 feet, 105 pounds. However, her goal is to put away 250 wings while competing against a field of 25 (mostly big, beefy) guys. But Torres isn’t backing down from no man, not even the great Kobayashi. “He doesn’t scare me. He’s another person that loves to do that stuff, eat,” she said. “It doesn’t have to be a man [that wins]. A woman can show up, a woman can do just as well.” METRO/MG

The Temple Lung Center is conducting a clinical trial to find out if a statin pill, used to reduce cholesterol and prevent heart disease, can also help reduce the number and severity of emphysema flare-ups. TO BE A PART OF THIS TRIAL YOU MUST: ■ Have emphysema ■ Be 40 to 80 years of age ■ Be a current or ex-smoker ■ Not be taking a statin for high cholesterol or heart disease
You may receive a statin pill or a placebo (an inactive substance) and medical tests, including breathing and blood tests, at no cost during the trial. The trial consists of 4 to 6 visits per year to the research facility, Temple Lung Center, for up to 2 years. You may receive $100 for the first visit and $50 for each following visit.

LeSean McCoy was never jealous of his high-profile teammates. He just wanted to know where he fit in on one of the NFL’s most prolific offenses. After leading the NFL in rushing touchdowns and pushing for the overall rushing title most of the season, McCoy is no longer a secret weapon. He knows it, his teammates know it and, most importantly, opposing defenses know it. “I want the defensive coordinators to say, ‘Where LeSean McCoy at?’” McCoy said Tuesday night, while holding a Q&A session with fans at the 2012 Pennsylvania Auto Show. “I wasn’t jealous, but I was sick and tired of people saying they had to worry about Michael, DeSean … where do I fit in? I want to help them
