Survey: Bostonians to party for game BOSTON. More than half of

the residents in the Metro Boston area will host or attend a Super Bowl party or head out to a bar to watch the big game, according to a survey. PollBuzzer, a Cambridge-based survey company, polled hundreds of people and found that 52 percent of residents in the Boston area will host or attend a Super Bowl party or head out Sunday night. That's compared to only 46 percent of New Yorkers, according to the survey. METRO

City: Police will have eyes on, above revelers

City officials want sports fans to stay in line on Super Bowl Sunday. By halftime, parts of Boston will be shut off to football revelers not already in the Kenmore Square and North Station areas. At a press conference Thursday, Boston Police Commissioner Ed Davis said besides a beefed-up police presence, officers will also be strapped with cameras and there will be a helicopter harnessing surveillance equipment monitoring the city from the sky. “If [people] think they are getting away with breaking or destroying something, they will have a surprise for them in the future,” Davis said. “Just because police aren’t around, doesn’t mean you won’t be watched.” Davis joined Mayor Thomas Menino and Boston University officials to outline the rules following Sunday’s matchup between the New England Patriots and New York Giants. “Public drinking will not be tolerated, as well as dangerous behaviors or destructive behaviors,” said Menino. Officials also cautioned that local saloons would be cracking down on three things: overconsumption, overcapacity and those under the legal drinking age. “[We] have asked establishments, that if we are in a victory situation, that they post signs in their premises so people won’t be allowed to re-enter if they leave to celebrate on the streets,” said Patricia Malone, director of Consumer Affairs

With Cambridge still mayorless, residents poke fun One month has passed since the beginning of the year and the Cambridge City Council has failed to elect a mayor, causing uncertainty on the School Committee, creating a deadlock among members and prompting residents to poke fun at the absurdity of it all. The city of Cambridge does not hold a public election for mayor — and therefore every two years the City Council is charged with the task of agreeing on who will assume the

seat. The mayor in Cambridge chairs both the City Council and the School Committee. “It’s politics. There’s always varying alliances on the council. Several want to be mayor and no one has enough votes,” said Maurice Cunningham, chair of the political science de-

e’ve devoted a lot of time lately toward highlighting the campaign hijinks of the Republican nominees — for good reason! — but this weekend we’re going to take a step back and think a bit more long term. This turn was affected by a pair of timely circumstances. First: During a discussion this week about the upcoming November presidential election, a pal made it clear that he wasn’t particularly enamored with President Obama; that he hoped for a change of leadership; and that he was unequivocally going to vote for a second Obama term. This logical leap is a quirk of U.S. politics, where the twoparty system ensures most

people vote within the presumed cone of electability. If, as occurred most damagingly in 2000, a third-party vote ends up working in favor of the candidate one deems the less-acceptable of our two establishment evils, it is judged as having been wasted. Why, this dear friend asked, risk the election of a Romney or a Gingrich when we can rest safely in the dissatisfaction of another relatively-less-awful Obama term?

This past Monday, the president held a Google+ hangout, taking video questions from Web users. Of the questions submitted — which participants could vote up or down — 18 of the 20 most popular questions related to the unpopular war on drugs, speciﬁcally the question of marijuana legalization. Obama ﬁelded none of these.

hich brings us to circumstance No. 2: The American Civil Liberties Union this week filed a lawsuit against Obama administration agencies in an effort to learn the legal justification for the government’s policy of targeted assassinations of American citizens — including al Qaeda terrorist Anwar Awlaki and his 16-year-old son, Abdulrahman, in Yemen.

(Note that the ACLU has not attempted to subvert this sort of killing, but merely to discover the legal basis for its use, including, according to an ACLU blog post, “the process by which the administration adds Americans to secret government ‘kill lists.’”) Following drone strikes in fall 2011, the ACLU and others including The New York Times filed several Freedom of Information Act requests with the government, but to no avail. The Obama administration, once hailed by the president’s press secretary as being “the most transparent ... ever,” is, in the ACLU’s words, treating the “targeted killing program [as] so secret that they can’t even acknowledge that it exists.” To many, this will all seem quite acceptable. Mercilessly attacking and killing our sworn enemies is nothing but the mission statement of America in a post-9/11 world.

ut a difficulty arises when the enemies we’re clandestinely killing happen to be U.S. citizens. There may be no more distressing executive overreach than the power of the president to secretly select and execute Americans with absolutely no judicial oversight. Couple this with the fact that the president routinely trots these killings out as evidence of his leadership in the war on terror and you’ve got a contradiction more stark than Romney following up his “I’m not concerned about the very poor” gaffe with an endorsement from Donald Trump. Sure, these issues could actually get worse under Republican leadership, but honestly how much worse could it get? Obama wants to have his cake and kill it, too: to campaign as a liberal, lead as a moderate and reign as a tyrant. Unpaid intern sues Hearst Corp. A former intern at Harper’s Bazaar is suing the magazine’s publisher, Hearst Corporation, saying that her internship violates labor laws because it was unpaid, according to a lawsuit filed in federal court in New York. Xuedan Wang, 28, was an intern at the magazine’s accessories department from August to December last year, where she typically worked at least 40 hours a week, and sometimes as much as 55 hours, without pay, according to her lawsuit filed on Wednesday. “Unpaid interns are becoming the modernday equivalent of entrylevel employees, except that employers are not paying them for the many hours they work,” the lawsuit says. Atlantic City gets facelift Atlantic City will get a facelift from a plan approved by a special authority including an overhaul of its famed boardwalk and news rides on the pier. ‘The Woman in Black’ Director: James Watkins Cast: Daniel Radcliffe, Ciaran Hinds Rating: PG-13 Grade: You can’t help it at first. When the initial scenes unspool from the tale of “The Woman in Black” it’s — wait — Harry Potter has a kid? There he goes to a dour old mansion in the middle of nowhere. It looks like Hogwarts. When are the gilded portraits going to start talking to him? Those Harry Potter gadflies will disappear in the second act. Falling in line with the higher level of art that Guillermo Del Toro has brought to the horror genre in recent years, this isn’t your typical gory body-count schlock-fest. Granted, most of the scares come from that reliable formula of lulling the audience into a comfortable mood before the inevitable surprise, “The Woman in Black” tries to bring class and solid storytelling to what has been cheapened by the likes of the “Saw” franchise. What motivated you to accept the challenge here — a horror ﬁlm that’s certainly not for children?

[It was] Jane Goldman’s script, and the meeting with the director, James Watkins. [My character] Arthur is so complex, but there is a real calm in him. It was an interesting character to play. How would you describe him?

As a man so destroyed by the death of his wife who has been almost impossible to live in the human world for four years. Arthur could not connect with people, especially his son. He loves him, but he has not been there for him as he should have been, could not give him a happy childhood until now, because he has not the capacity for happiness. What did you struggle with the most in playing Arthur?

[His] apparent calm. There are times when we are not sure what Arthur thinks. We know that they might not be happy thoughts, but we are not sure exactly why, or what passes at certain times. This allows the public to have more space to connect, because they can insert whatever emotion they assume he must be feeling. Ambiguity plays a crucial role for the

And it further helps that Andrew and his pals develop awesome telekinetic powers after a runin with a mysterious glowing object buried under a field. The story is a refreshing take on old territory: what happens when everyday people develop superpowers. It’s a much more believable — and enjoyable — depiction of teenagers lives’ turning into comic books. NED EHRBAR

Gorgeously Glenn Still a stunner on the red carpet, celebrated actress Glenn Close discusses how she manned up for her role as ‘Albert Nobbs’

ome actresses might view playing a woman who passes herself off as a man as a chance to not worry about beauty or vanity, but Glenn Close — who dons intricate drag in “Albert Nobbs,” as an Irish woman working as a butler in a Dublin hotel — insists such disregard is nothing new for her. “I’ve played a lot of roles where I haven’t had to be pretty, so it’s not something I spend a lot of time on,” she says with a laugh. The role of Albert Nobbs has been a favorite of Close’s since she first played it onstage 20 years ago, and she feels the film version has been a long time coming. “I did it onstage, and it packed a huge emotional wallop — this simple story about this rather strange creature — and in theater, when some-

thing like that happens, you don’t forget it,” she says. “So as the years went by, I started thinking that if we could figure out how to do it, it could make a really powerful movie.” The challenge of turning a woman with Glenn Close’s looks into what could pass for a man was a particular challenge, as the audience has to believe that the people around Albert buy it. “It was really important to us that the people in the movie didn’t look like idiots,” she says. “It’s not the ‘Victor/Victoria’ — or even the ‘Yentl,’ you know?” The answer? Some subtle makeup and prosthetics, including adding to Close’s nose and earlobes. “It’s just all very, very fine tuning and very, very subtle,” she says.

While she’s drawing plenty of acclaim — and awards attention — for her performance, what most excited Close about the project was the work she got to do behind the scenes. “I loved being a writer,” she says. “I loved the days when we had to do rewrites and I’d be in my Albert costume at my computer. I loved solving problems at production meetings because we couldn’t afford to rent certain rooms, so could we change this scene to another room? Or just stuff like that. I loved the editing process.” Being so involved behind the scenes also meant dealing with the struggles that came with bringing the film to life. “The part that was the hardest was just finding the money,” she says, admitting that “Albert Nobbs” was “a very hard story to sell, because I walk in and they think, ‘You as a man? I don’t want to see you as a man.’ It was a long road.”

‘Miracle’ rescue gets big-screen treatment Unlike that other ocean movie we’ve all seen, in this familyfriendly film you’re rooting for the ship to hit the iceberg. The ship in question is a barge from the Soviets, coming to break the miles of ice that have trapped three gray whales from continuing their migration out of the Arctic Circle. In “Big Miracle,” John Krasinski stars as Adam Carlson, the TV news reporter who breaks the story that the whales are trapped, which prompts outlets across the globe to come to Barrow, Ala., to get in on the scoop.

His ex-girlfriend, Rachel Kramer (Barrymore), is a Greenpeace volunteer who attaches herself to the cause by doing whatever possible to free the whales, even diving into to the frigid Arctic to get a close-up view of how they’re doing. You’ll get frustrated as the characters run into obstacles while trying to save the massive mammals, and you’ll feel as triumphant as they do when solutions are found. Because the film’s based on a true story, one of the best parts is the epilogue — when the photos of the real-life heroes in-

volved in the story flash across the screen. (As this is Hollywood, the actors are considerably more beautiful than their real-life counterparts.) The end boasts a cameo from a certain former Alaskan governor — if you can count superimposed footage as a cameo — which serves as a funny wink to all the grown-ups in the crowd.

Just like the first time The Kills may be celebrating their 10-year anniversary as a band, but one half of the duo, Jamie Hince, still gets the butterflies before going onstage EDOUARD PLONGEON

Jamie Hince may be married to a supermodel, but he finds a roomful of screaming fans way more intimidating. The British guitarist (and husband to Kate Moss) has been half of The Kills for the last decade, but he confesses that he still gets the jitters before every show. But he has a theory on that. “I think it’s easier when you’re in a band of four or five people if you’re the bass player and your bass goes wrong, the band carries on,” Hince explains. “But with The Kills, if the guitar stops, the music stops. You’ve taken a proper tumble.” But being part of such a small group has its benefits. When reflecting back on the four Kills albums he’s made with bandmate Alison Mosshart, Hince notes that the simplicity allowed for a lot of experimentation, especially on their early albums. “When you’re working in a two-piece, you tend to be fascinated by what you can do by leaving things out,” he says. “So the first couple of records were really experimenting with that, and then I upgraded and bought MPC 60 drum machine that kind of kicked open the

door to hip-hop, and I just went crazy on that and spent hours and hours striking my drums and really getting into it.” Given all the time to reflect on his band’s evolution with a series of anniversary shows, Hince admits that their controversial start — in which they shunned most interviews and flouted rules about say, smoking onstage — is a far cry from where they are now as a band. Out of the shadow of the mighty White Stripes, whom they were so often compared to, The Kills can savor their own clearly defined identity. Just don’t call it garage rock, please. “It kind of got pigeonholed

I’m kind of happy to talk about my band now. I feel kind of confident, really. It’s not like it’s going to be taken and turned into something else.”

We gave the keys to the Super Bowl debate machine to Metro’s two rival sport editors and let the sparks fly and venom spew. We just wanted to know two things: Who will win the big game, and why? There wasn’t much of a consensus. But both men did pause to wonder which side Ines Sainz was on. And, of course, they agreed that Super Bowl XLVI should be one heck of a football game.

As for Sunday, it will be next to impossible to duplicate the luckiest play in the history of sports (Tyree’s helmet catch). So, good luck with that. And your favorite hick son Eli? One solid season does not make a Hall of Famer. As of today, he’s Trent Dilfer with a goofy haircut and a Southern twang.

It’s quite simple — over the past 10 games, the best QB the Patriots beat was Mark Sanchez. Who’s the worst quarterback the Giants have faced the last 10 games? Mark Sanchez. The Patriots are stepping up in class, and it shouldn’t be as close as Super Bowl XLII or Week 9 this year.

What color Gatorade will be dumped on the winning coach’s head? Yellow is the favorite at 21, and most likely. For value, go with blue at 10-1. Why? Because it’s crisp.

Trust the BCS? In the regular season, LSU beat Alabama in Tuscaloosa. However, the Tigers ended up as an underdog in the BCS title game. Sports books took significantly more action on LSU. Alabama easily won the game, netting the “sharp” bettors and the books a nice payday.

So maybe we should stop trying to analyze the matchups, injuries, home-field advantage and who is hot. Perhaps a more effective strategy would be to simply figure out what the bookies want to happen, and then bet on their side. The folks at SportsInsights.com do that, tracking the number of bets that come in on each side at six independent major offshore books. Aaron Hernandez It wasn’t for Rob Gronkowski, Aaron Hernandez would probably be the most talked about offensive weapon for Tom Brady, and rightfully so. Hernandez somewhat quietly had a huge year for the Patriots, lining up at tight end, wide receiver, and even running back. With a less-than100 percent Rob Gronkowski (who will play), Brady might be looking to Hernandez in pressure situations. In two postseason games, Hernandez has 11 catches, 121 receiving yards, and a touchdown — you can tack on 70 rushing yards too.

The number of receptions Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez had against the Giants in Week 9. Hernandez did have a TD against New York but will need to be more productive Sunday.

1. SUPER BOWL XLII The storyline heading into this game will forever be difficult to beat. It featured an undefeated Patriots team that was an NFL record 16-0 in the 2007 regular season against the No. 6-seeded Giants. Throw in the whole New York-Boston thing and you had a mountain of hype leading up to the game. Then they played ... and the game surpassed the wildest of expectations. David Tyree’s helmet catch, arguably the most famous play in Super Bowl history, led to Eli Manning’s touchdown pass to Plaxico Burress in the corner of the end zone. Tom Brady, Randy Moss and the vaunted Patriots offense ran out of time in Arizona and New York hoisted its third Lombardi Trophy in franchise history. MATT BURKE
