City: Police will have eyes on, above revelers

NICOLAUS CZARNECKI/METRO

City officials want sports fans to stay in line on Super Bowl Sunday. By halftime, parts of Boston will be shut off to football revelers not already in the Kenmore Square and North Station areas. At a press conference Thursday, Boston Police Commissioner Ed Davis said besides a beefed-up police presence, officers will also be strapped with cameras and there will be a helicopter harnessing surveillance equipment monitoring the city from the sky. “If [people] think they are getting away with breaking or destroying something, they will have a surprise for them in the future,” Davis said. “Just because police aren’t around, doesn’t mean you won’t be watched.” Davis joined Mayor Thomas Menino and Boston University officials to outline the rules following Sunday’s matchup between the New England Patriots and New York Giants. “Public drinking will not be tolerated, as well as dangerous behaviors or destructive behaviors,” said Menino. Officials also cautioned that local saloons would be cracking down on three things: overconsumption, overcapacity and those under the legal drinking age. “[We] have asked establishments, that if we are in a victory situation, that they post signs in their premises so people won’t be allowed to re-enter if they leave to celebrate on the streets,” said Patricia Malone, director of Consumer Affairs

Other places have a more rational process.” During the election in 2010, it took the council two months to elect a mayor. This year, the School Committee is undergoing a major system-wide restructuring and the inaction by the council is “frustrating,” according to School Committee member Marc McGovern. Seeing through Obama’s transparency SAUL LOEB/AFP/GETTY IMAGES

W

e’ve devoted a lot of time lately toward highlighting the campaign hijinks of the Republican nominees — for good reason! — but this weekend we’re going to take a step back and think a bit more long term. This turn was affected by a pair of timely circumstances. First: During a discussion this week about the upcoming November presidential election, a pal made it clear that he wasn’t particularly enamored with President Obama; that he hoped for a change of leadership; and that he was unequivocally going to vote for a second Obama term. This logical leap is a quirk of U.S. politics, where the twoparty system ensures most

people vote within the presumed cone of electability. If, as occurred most damagingly in 2000, a third-party vote ends up working in favor of the candidate one deems the less-acceptable of our two establishment evils, it is judged as having been wasted. Why, this dear friend asked, risk the election of a Romney or a Gingrich when we can rest safely in the dissatisfaction of another relatively-less-awful Obama term?

This past Monday, the president held a Google+ hangout, taking video questions from Web users. Of the questions submitted — which participants could vote up or down — 18 of the 20 most popular questions related to the unpopular war on drugs, specifically the question of marijuana legalization. Obama fielded none of these.

W

The president hopes you vote with your party this upcoming November. Talk about a wasted vote.

hich brings us to circumstance No. 2: The American Civil Liberties Union this week filed a lawsuit against Obama administration agencies in an effort to learn the legal justification for the government’s policy of targeted assassinations of American citizens — including al Qaeda terrorist Anwar Awlaki and his 16-year-old son, Abdulrahman, in Yemen.

(Note that the ACLU has not attempted to subvert this sort of killing, but merely to discover the legal basis for its use, including, according to an ACLU blog post, “the process by which the administration adds Americans to secret government ‘kill lists.’”) Following drone strikes in fall 2011, the ACLU and others including The New York Times filed several Freedom of Information Act requests with the government, but to no avail. The Obama administration, once hailed by the president’s press secretary as being “the most transparent ... ever,” is, in the ACLU’s words, treating the “targeted killing program [as] so secret that they can’t even acknowledge that it exists.” To many, this will all seem quite acceptable. Mercilessly attacking and killing our sworn enemies is nothing but the mission statement of America in a post-9/11 world.

B

ut a difficulty arises when the enemies we’re clandestinely killing happen to be U.S. citizens. There may be no more distressing executive overreach than the power of the president to secretly select and execute Americans with absolutely no judicial oversight. Couple this with the fact that the president routinely trots these killings out as evidence of his leadership in the war on terror and you’ve got a contradiction more stark than Romney following up his “I’m not concerned about the very poor” gaffe with an endorsement from Donald Trump. Sure, these issues could actually get worse under Republican leadership, but honestly how much worse could it get? Obama wants to have his cake and kill it, too: to campaign as a liberal, lead as a moderate and reign as a tyrant. Metro does not endorse the opinions of the author, or any opinions expressed on its pages.

2 Radcliffe Review

‘The Woman in Black’ Director: James Watkins Cast: Daniel Radcliffe, Ciaran Hinds Rating: PG-13 Grade: You can’t help it at first. When the initial scenes unspool from the tale of “The Woman in Black” it’s — wait — Harry Potter has a kid? There he goes to a dour old mansion in the middle of nowhere. It looks like Hogwarts. When are the gilded portraits going to start talking to him? Those Harry Potter gadflies will disappear in the second act. Falling in line with the higher level of art that Guillermo Del Toro has brought to the horror genre in recent years, this isn’t your typical gory body-count schlock-fest. Granted, most of the scares come from that reliable formula of lulling the audience into a comfortable mood before the inevitable surprise, “The Woman in Black” tries to bring class and solid storytelling to what has been cheapened by the likes of the “Saw” franchise. A

in the post-Potter world

fter saying goodbye to a decade of Harry Potter, Daniel Radcliffe says he’s ready to show that, behind the boy wizard, he is a real actor willing to play a wide variety of roles. First, he acted in the well-received Broadway revival of “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying.” Now, we have the Gothic period horror film “The Woman in Black,” in which he plays a widower and lawyer in a town haunted by secrets.

Apparitions abound in Daniel Radcliffe’s first film to follow the franchise that made him famous But Voldemort’s got nothing on the menacing ghost of ‘The Woman in Black’

What motivated you to accept the challenge here — a horror film that’s certainly not for children?

[It was] Jane Goldman’s script, and the meeting with the director, James Watkins. [My character] Arthur is so complex, but there is a real calm in him. It was an interesting character to play. How would you describe him?

As a man so destroyed by the death of his wife who has been almost impossible to live in the human world for four years. Arthur could not connect with people, especially his son. He loves him, but he has not been there for him as he should have been, could not give him a happy childhood until now, because he has not the capacity for happiness. What did you struggle with the most in playing Arthur?

[His] apparent calm. There are times when we are not sure what Arthur thinks. We know that they might not be happy thoughts, but we are not sure exactly why, or what passes at certain times. This allows the public to have more space to connect, because they can insert whatever emotion they assume he must be feeling. Ambiguity plays a crucial role for the

Any worries that the audience will still see you as Harry Potter?

Q&A Are you really into ghosts on film? First “Harry,” now this.

Yes, when I met James the first time, he mentioned a quote from Kubrick about how all movies with a supernatural element are intrinsically linked because they in-

volve life after death. Here’s this guy who lost his wife, goes to this house and starts seeing the ghost of a dead woman. The reason for staying there to find it almost comes as hidden desire, or instinct, to get an assurance that his wife is in a better place.

But when word came that Krasinski was in, the actress found herself in a scene right out of one of her own movies. “He called me at the San Francisco airport and I started running up and down the halls, I was so happy and so excited. NED EHRBAR METRO WORLD NEWS IN LOS ANGELES

Review

‘Chronicle’ Grade: First-time director Josh Trank takes a genre that was quickly careening into gimmick territory — the found-footage/POV style of “Cloverfield” — and injects new life into it with his debut. It helps that one of his three main characters, Andrew (Dane DeHaan), is something of an obsessive self-documen-

tarian, which means a distinct lack of shaky camerawork. And it further helps that Andrew and his pals develop awesome telekinetic powers after a runin with a mysterious glowing object buried under a field. The story is a refreshing take on old territory: what happens when everyday people develop superpowers. It’s a much more believable — and enjoyable — depiction of teenagers lives’ turning into comic books. NED EHRBAR

Gorgeously Glenn Still a stunner on the red carpet, celebrated actress Glenn Close discusses how she manned up for her role as ‘Albert Nobbs’

S

ome actresses might view playing a woman who passes herself off as a man as a chance to not worry about beauty or vanity, but Glenn Close — who dons intricate drag in “Albert Nobbs,” as an Irish woman working as a butler in a Dublin hotel — insists such disregard is nothing new for her. “I’ve played a lot of roles where I haven’t had to be pretty, so it’s not something I spend a lot of time on,” she says with a laugh. The role of Albert Nobbs has been a favorite of Close’s since she first played it onstage 20 years ago, and she feels the film version has been a long time coming. “I did it onstage, and it packed a huge emotional wallop — this simple story about this rather strange creature — and in theater, when some-

thing like that happens, you don’t forget it,” she says. “So as the years went by, I started thinking that if we could figure out how to do it, it could make a really powerful movie.” The challenge of turning a woman with Glenn Close’s looks into what could pass for a man was a particular challenge, as the audience has to believe that the people around Albert buy it. “It was really important to us that the people in the movie didn’t look like idiots,” she says. “It’s not the ‘Victor/Victoria’ — or even the ‘Yentl,’ you know?” The answer? Some subtle makeup and prosthetics, including adding to Close’s nose and earlobes. “It’s just all very, very fine tuning and very, very subtle,” she says.

While she’s drawing plenty of acclaim — and awards attention — for her performance, what most excited Close about the project was the work she got to do behind the scenes. “I loved being a writer,” she says. “I loved the days when we had to do rewrites and I’d be in my Albert costume at my computer. I loved solving problems at production meetings because we couldn’t afford to rent certain rooms, so could we change this scene to another room? Or just stuff like that. I loved the editing process.” Being so involved behind the scenes also meant dealing with the struggles that came with bringing the film to life. “The part that was the hardest was just finding the money,” she says, admitting that “Albert Nobbs” was “a very hard story to sell, because I walk in and they think, ‘You as a man? I don’t want to see you as a man.’ It was a long road.”

Also opening. ‘The Innkeepers’

Sara Paxton and Pat Healy (not Metro’s music editor, but an actor with the same name) star in “The Innkeepers.” PHOTO COURTESY OF MAGNET RELEASING.

After an onslaught of all the Oscar-bait films, we’re happy to welcome back some good, old-fashioned horror movies. In “The Innkeepers,” two employees decide to investigate their notoriously haunted hotel before it closes forever. Old guests return — in spirit anyway. METRO

‘Miracle’ rescue gets big-screen treatment Unlike that other ocean movie we’ve all seen, in this familyfriendly film you’re rooting for the ship to hit the iceberg. The ship in question is a barge from the Soviets, coming to break the miles of ice that have trapped three gray whales from continuing their migration out of the Arctic Circle. In “Big Miracle,” John Krasinski stars as Adam Carlson, the TV news reporter who breaks the story that the whales are trapped, which prompts outlets across the globe to come to Barrow, Ala., to get in on the scoop.

DARREN MICHAELS

John Krasinski and Drew Barrymore star in “Big Miracle.”

His ex-girlfriend, Rachel Kramer (Barrymore), is a Greenpeace volunteer who attaches herself to the cause by doing whatever possible to free the whales, even diving into to the frigid Arctic to get a close-up view of how they’re doing. You’ll get frustrated as the characters run into obstacles while trying to save the massive mammals, and you’ll feel as triumphant as they do when solutions are found. Because the film’s based on a true story, one of the best parts is the epilogue — when the photos of the real-life heroes in-

volved in the story flash across the screen. (As this is Hollywood, the actors are considerably more beautiful than their real-life counterparts.) The end boasts a cameo from a certain former Alaskan governor — if you can count superimposed footage as a cameo — which serves as a funny wink to all the grown-ups in the crowd.

Football that’s easy on the eyes, played just as tough

Tune-in The MTV2 “ultimate tailgate” kicks off at 11 a.m. Sunday with a special edition of “Sucker Free Countdown” from DJ Envy’s Game Day Bash in NYC. It’s followed by coverage of the Lingerie Football League’s Lingerie Bowl IX. The 4 p.m. kickoff is live on MTV2 during halftime of Sunday’s other big game.

Sunday’s Lingerie Bowl IX is a rematch between the 2011 champs, Los Angeles Temptation, and the Philadelphia Passion Players size up rivals Live on MTV2 Temptation

JOE PETRO LFL

Ogom Chijindu Wide receiver/safety, Los Angeles Temptation Thoughts on your rivals? It’s not really difficult to size up the competition — we played them last year in the Lingerie Bowl. We beat them by one point. This year we have more of an advantage because we’ve seen them play a variety of teams. I’m not knocking them — they do have some talent — but because we beat them once I don’t think it

Chijindu hits hard.

will be hard to beat them again. What’s the key to victory? Our strategy is to shut down their one-woman show, [running back] Marirose Roach. It’s the Roach show every time they play

— so if we can shut her down, force the run on the inside, they won’t be able to score on us. Pregame rituals? I like to eat Slim Jims. I eat them before every single game, and we’ve won every time. What’s the first thing you’ll do if you win on Sunday? If we win we’re gonna take a really long and overdue vacation as a team. What do you do when you’re not playing football? I’m a Hooters girl/Hooters trainer. They’re very flexible with my crazy football schedule. I get to pop in every now and then and waitress and train new girls — I love it.

Passion

JOE PETRO LFL

Christy Bell Quarterback, Philadelphia Passion Thoughts on your rivals? We’ve watched their games. We sat down on Tuesday and started drawing up our game plan with coach. Losing to them by one point was so hard last year. It’s going to be a little more emotional on Sunday — we’re gonna be angry during the game. What’s the key to victory?

Bell throws for the TD.

We’re just going to play our game. We might change one or two things with our defense, but our offense has been set all year. We have our throwing game, which we showed off [in the

conference finals], and then we have a fantastic running game. Pregame rituals? We do a whole team thing — we rile each other up, we do pep talks, we have our team prayer right before the game. We do a lot of yelling. What’s the first thing you’ll do if you win on Sunday? Hopefully run into the locker room and pop a bottle of champagne! I’ll feel like a million bucks. What do you do when you’re not playing football? I’m still in school and usually I’m waitressing or bartending. I was still writing papers this week and doing homework. METRO

THE WORD

Metro’s Monica Weymouth shares her take on the world of gossip

@monicaatmetro

Way too far, Demi Moore

Demi Moore’s recent hospitalization didn’t quite come as a surprise to those who were close to her, reports Us Weekly. It seems her split from Ashton Kutcher had her craving the company of a younger crowd that she wasn’t equipped to keep up with.

“She’s been really down, and she’s surrounding herself with young people to make her feel better,” a source tells the magazine. “She’s been mixing pills and Red Bulls, among other things.” We want to feel for Demi and her impossibly flawless 49-year-old skin. After spending the past few years with Kutcher — who, although 33, seems to only own cargo pants and flip-flops — the transition to adulthood must be tough. But moving in on Zac Efron? Too far, lady. According to another source, she was pursuing the “High School Musical” star at a recent house party, looking “wired and gaunt.” Listen, Demi: Inappropriately hitting on Zac Efron while tipsy is my deal — and I have “The Word” archives to prove it.

The Lohan countdown has begun Just when we started to miss Lindsay Lohan, it looks like she’s about to be a regular presence in our lives again. Not only has she moved into hot-mess headquarters Chateau Marmont, but she

monica.weymouth@metro.us – Dorothy Robinson will return on Feb. 7.

Talking points Seyfried staying single, thank you Even though she’s set to play adult film star Linda Lovelace on screen, Amanda Seyfried is “terrified of being promiscuous,” she admits to Glamour magazine. “I don’t like the feeling you get when it’s not something that you truly want to do, and I hate the emotional abuse you give yourself afterward.” Which might have something to do with why Seyfried has taken herself off the market: “Right now I’m happy to not have someone’s naked body around me. Except for my dog’s.”

Have a heart, Madonna!

has a new boyfriend: Henry Hopper, 21-year-old son of the late Dennis Hopper and star of Gus Van Sant’s recent “Restless,” according to TMZ. The happy couple was recently spotted picking up Red Bull and vodka in Venice (really, again? We had hoped rich people had better drugs than Red Bull). Any time you’re ready, Linds.

Madonna’s daughter, Lourdes Leon, was pressed into service for “W.E.,” though her debut performance didn’t make the cut, the Material Mom tells MTV. “There was a scene where she played Wally as a young girl, and I just kind of dragged her in at the last minute,” Madonna says of having her daughter play a young Wallis Simpson, the subject of her new film. “It was quite unfair of me to do what I did and what I asked her to do, but she was really great.” Apparently not great enough, though: “I ended up cutting her out of the film. Ruthless, I know,” Madonna says. “I said, ‘Sorry babe, you’re on the cutting-room floor.’ She took it like a champ.”

Olivia Wilde still living the fairy tale Olivia Wilde opens up about her recent divorce in the new issue of “Town & Country.” “The good thing about getting divorced young — if there is a good thing — is that it makes you realize

Way too much info, Becks David Beckham wants the world to know he will no longer be hanging out at home in the buff. “My naked days are over,” Beckham says while unveiling his new line of underwear for H&M, according to Hollyscoop. “I definitely walk around the house in my underwear. But not naked. With the boys it’s not a problem because they’re naked all the time — but with a little girl now, it is different.”

Lively might want to invest in dolls Blake Lively is looking forward to having kids one day — and given her extensive wardrobe, she’s hoping they can use it. “I hope to have a few girls one day,” she tells Elle Magazine. “If not girls, they better be trannies. I have some amazing shoes and bags and stories than need to be appreciated.”

there’s no schedule in life,” says the actress, who married Italian prince Tao Ruspoli at age 18. “It blasts you wide open and frees you to be honest with yourself.” That’s a healthy way to look at it. But we can’t help but wonder: Does it help when the “wide open” is every studio in Hollywood and “yourself” is Olivia Wilde?

Just like the first time The Kills may be celebrating their 10-year anniversary as a band, but one half of the duo, Jamie Hince, still gets the butterflies before going onstage EDOUARD PLONGEON

Jamie Hince may be married to a supermodel, but he finds a roomful of screaming fans way more intimidating. The British guitarist (and husband to Kate Moss) has been half of The Kills for the last decade, but he confesses that he still gets the jitters before every show. But he has a theory on that. “I think it’s easier when you’re in a band of four or five people if you’re the bass player and your bass goes wrong, the band carries on,” Hince explains. “But with The Kills, if the guitar stops, the music stops. You’ve taken a proper tumble.” But being part of such a small group has its benefits. When reflecting back on the four Kills albums he’s made with bandmate Alison Mosshart, Hince notes that the simplicity allowed for a lot of experimentation, especially on their early albums. “When you’re working in a two-piece, you tend to be fascinated by what you can do by leaving things out,” he says. “So the first couple of records were really experimenting with that, and then I upgraded and bought MPC 60 drum machine that kind of kicked open the

door to hip-hop, and I just went crazy on that and spent hours and hours striking my drums and really getting into it.” Given all the time to reflect on his band’s evolution with a series of anniversary shows, Hince admits that their controversial start — in which they shunned most interviews and flouted rules about say, smoking onstage — is a far cry from where they are now as a band. Out of the shadow of the mighty White Stripes, whom they were so often compared to, The Kills can savor their own clearly defined identity. Just don’t call it garage rock, please. “It kind of got pigeonholed

New album in the offing Last year’s “Blood Pressures” garnered much critical praise, and the band is planning to head into the studio to begin recording a new album due out late 2012 or early 2013

into that sort of new wave, whatever it was, garage rock, whatever, which I always laughed at because we only had like a $40 drum machine that we used, and you know it was so far from garage rock,” Hince says of their first album, “Keep on Your Mean Side.” “I know we definitely had some sort of paranoia,” he says about the band's approach to the media. “We sort of relaxed the reins a bit, really. I’m kind of happy to talk about my band now. I feel kind of confident, really. It’s not like it’s going to be taken and turned into something else.”

While I agree that there are legitimate issues on which one can disagree with Congressman Paul, the fact that Mr. Connell offers only name calling (“insane agenda”) and shameless fabrication (“make women second-class citizens”) seems to indicate

On that note, if following the Constitution is so abhorrent to Mr. Connell then I urge him to speak out about abolishing it entirely: Paying lip service when you agree and stomping all over it when it prevents the advancement of your own agenda strikes me as slightly disingenuous. While folks are upset that Mitt Romney stated he isn’t “concerned about the very poor,” I’m surprised there isn’t more of an uproar that he’s not “concerned about the very rich” either. SUPER BOWL PREVIEW Legacy Sunday

Quoted

Patriots look to continue dynasty that began a decade ago Belichick and Brady with chance to go down in history as game’s all-time best What to watch for on Super Sunday

W

“Tom Brady is a great quarterback, but at the end of the day, he is just a quarterback. It’s not like he is God. ” GIANTS DEFENSIVE END JASON PIERRE-PAUL

GETTY IMAGES

hy the heck is the over/under on this game 55 points? This one is going to be close in the fourth quarter, and the winner isn’t going to need more than 27 points. Even that may be too high. Look, it’s the Super Bowl — there’s a lot on the line, and both teams are going to be a little more hesitant to air it out. Believe it or not, the Patriots play pretty solid defense, especially in the red zone. The Giants are solid as well, especially up front. Don’t be surprised to see each team punt on the first few possessions before they settle in and execute on offense.

No huddle, no problem Patriots fans have seen it all season: When the going gets tough, the no-huddle offense gets going. And nobody runs it better than Tom Brady. You’ve read enough about how awesome the Giants’ front four (and actually more than four) are, but how soon until one or more of them fakes an injury to slow down the Patriots hurry-up offense? It’s been the closest thing to automatic that the Patriots have — and if Gronkowski is in there with Wes Welker, Aaron Hernandez, and Deion Branch (Chad Ochicinco?), and the Oline is holding strong, he’ll find his man. Look for that often.

Revenge, no. Legacy, yes. Football is a team sport. Fact. But it’s also a fact that while

Wes Welker and the Patriots have that look in their eyes. Sunday, there are legacies on the line.

Strange ways The Giants have fielded two of the worst Super Bowl contenders in history based on regular season scoring differential: 2011 Giants are the first regular season team to reach the Super Bowl after a year in which they surrendered more points (400) than they scored (394) in the regular season. 2007 Giants were the fifth worst of all-time with a +22 point differential. – Cold, Hard Football Facts

it means the world to each and every player on each team, Tom Brady and Bill Belichick are each working on a legacy that could be remembered in football as the best of all-time. The numbers say that they are already the best quarterback-coach tandem in NFL history. Brady will always be considered one of the best, but he’ll need a fourth Super Bowl ring to be considered THE best. Same goes for Belichick, who currently trails Chuck Noll by one ring. Is this the year that it all comes together? JIMMY TOSCANO sports@metro.us

McCourty ready for big challenge INDIANAPOLIS. Devin McCourty was a Pro Bowler in his maiden campaign and has been a key contributor on two Patriots playoff squads. Sunday, as he’ll be lined across from any number of Giants receivers — a unit that is arguably the best in the league. And even though Big Blue’s receiving corps is an upgrade over what McCourty saw during

his time at Rutgers, he said in the end it all comes down to executing and just finding a way to get things done. “They bring every challenge that a wide receiver group brings [because] they have three very explosive receivers,” McCourty said. “But at this time of year, it doesn’t matter what a secondary has given up throughout the season because playoff stats [reset]. There’s one game left and each team is going to do what they have to do to get this win.” METRO/TW

We gave the keys to the Super Bowl debate machine to Metro’s two rival sport editors and let the sparks fly and venom spew. We just wanted to know two things: Who will win the big game, and why? There wasn’t much of a consensus. But both men did pause to wonder which side Ines Sainz was on. And, of course, they agreed that Super Bowl XLVI should be one heck of a football game.

MATT BURKE guys. Welcome to the big time. At the same time, it should still sting a tad to know that two of the three Super Bowl titles in Giants history were directly won by our head coach, Bill Belichick. His game plan for Super Bowl XXV, not Parcells’, is in Canton — and it’s a

well-known fact that Belichick schemed Lawrence Taylor to the top and that the Fat Tuna never won jack without the hooded prince. As for Sunday, it will be next to impossible to duplicate the luckiest play in the history of sports (Tyree’s helmet catch). So, good luck with that. And your favorite hick son Eli? One solid season does not make a Hall of Famer. As of today, he’s Trent Dilfer with a goofy haircut and a Southern twang.

you have going for you. The Giants, meanwhile, are living in the present. Eli Manning is in the prime of his career, he has two dynamite young receivers in Hakeem Nicks and Victor Cruz, and the defensive line is the best in football. We know both teams have bad secondaries, so

throw them out. But you can make a legitimate case that the Giants have two better running backs, two better receivers and three better defensive ends than anyone on the Pats. It’s quite simple — over the past 10 games, the best QB the Patriots beat was Mark Sanchez. Who’s the worst quarterback the Giants have faced the last 10 games? Mark Sanchez. The Patriots are stepping up in class, and it shouldn’t be as close as Super Bowl XLII or Week 9 this year.

METRO BOSTON SPORTS EDITOR, MATT.BURKE@METRO.US

We understand if this means everything to you New York. I mean, it’s rare that one of your nine pro teams (New Jersey counts, right?) makes it to the title game. With seven pro titles in the past decade, this whole Super Bowl deal has become just another event for us in Boston. So we say, enjoy it

ROOTING FOR THE BOOKIES

Bet the farm

2

How many times will Peyton Manning be shown on TV during? The over/under is 3.5, making the over a strong play. Between Eli, the neck and Peyton’s impending release, this is like free money.

3

Who will the Super Bowl MVP thank first? The favorite is “teammates” at 5/4, but the value play is “Does not thank anyone” at 5/2. These guys have to look out for No. 1.

4

Who will have more points: Paul Pierce or the Patriots? The Pats are getting 3.5 and the smart money is on them. Pierce is up against defensive stopper Tony Allen.

5

What color Gatorade will be dumped on the winning coach’s head? Yellow is the favorite at 21, and most likely. For value, go with blue at 10-1. Why? Because it’s crisp.

GETTY IMAGES

It’s not a coincidence bookies drive through town in BMWs and Vegas casinos build multibillion-dollar gambling palaces. The house wins.

Trust the BCS? In the regular season, LSU beat Alabama in Tuscaloosa. However, the Tigers ended up as an underdog in the BCS title game. Sports books took significantly more action on LSU. Alabama easily won the game, netting the “sharp” bettors and the books a nice payday.

So maybe we should stop trying to analyze the matchups, injuries, home-field advantage and who is hot. Perhaps a more effective strategy would be to simply figure out what the bookies want to happen, and then bet on their side. The folks at SportsInsights.com do that, tracking the number of bets that come in on each side at six independent major offshore books. Using that info, they decipher who is pushing the line and thus what those books are rooting for. “You want to follow the sharp money, you want to follow the Warren Buffetts of our industry,” said Dan Fabrizio, the president of SportsIn-

sights. “Not the other way around.” Sunday’s game between the Patriots and Giants sticks out to Fabrizio, and not just because it’s the Super Bowl. As of Thursday, 61 percent of bets were coming in on the underdogs from New York. “That’s very rare. Typically, you’ll see the favorite getting

the majority of public bets,” said Fabrizio. “I would say nine times out of 10 it’s going to be on the favorite.” Everyone and their grandmother wagers the Super Bowl, so the line appears to be getting pushed by unsophisticated, or “square” bettors. After opening at Patriots minus3.5 in most spots, the line has

gone to minus-3 and minus2.5 in some shops. SportsInsights is recommending a play on the Patriots at minus-2.5. No one knows if that will hit, but we do know that they will be cheering when the bookies cheer.

ball. While the frequency isn’t there — the teams have met just three times since 2008 — the animosity certainly is. Those three games have been decided by an average margin of victory of 3.3 points, with the Giants taking two of them, including a Super Bowl. Three players the Patriots need to shine for success on Super Sunday:

Aaron Hernandez It wasn’t for Rob Gronkowski, Aaron Hernandez would probably be the most talked about offensive weapon for Tom Brady, and rightfully so. Hernandez somewhat quietly had a huge year for the Patriots, lining up at tight end, wide receiver, and even running back. With a less-than100 percent Rob Gronkowski (who will play), Brady might be looking to Hernandez in pressure situations. In two postseason games, Hernandez has 11 catches, 121 receiving yards, and a touchdown — you can tack on 70 rushing yards too.

The number of receptions Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez had against the Giants in Week 9. Hernandez did have a TD against New York but will need to be more productive Sunday.

Adult ADHD Trials Are you: • Between the ages of 18-60? • Having trouble with inattention, concentration, disorganization, or other ADHD symptoms? • Interested in participating in a medication research study to treat your symptoms?

Since 2001, Light has been protecting Brady, keeping him in tip-top shape and helping him maintain his supermodel-husband-worthy status. That will all need to continue Sunday when the beastly front four of the Giants lick their chops and try to take him down. It’s not just Light, obviously, as Logan Mankins and the rest of the Oline need to be on their best game.

Several studies are recruiting now. These studies may require a commitment of 2-6 months. Clinical trial participants may receive follow-up care after the completion of a study at no cost.

Brandon Spikes You know what you’re going to get out of Vince Wilfork, and make no mistake he’s the heart and soul of the Patriots defense. Jerod Mayo anchors the linebackers, and Patrick Chung has somewhat of a handle on the secondary. So who is the X-factor? It’s got to be Brandon Spikes. Perhaps nobody should evoke more fear than Spikes, and sometimes fear can go a long way in stopping receivers. He’s already promised pain, now he needs to make good on that promise. We’ve seen flashes of greatness — and now’s the time to shine. JIMMY TOSCANO sports@metro.us

ALL-TIME SUPER BATTLES Patriots, Giants involved in some of the better Super Bowls of all-time Majority of greatest matchups on the big stage have occurred in past decade It will take a lot for Sunday’s game to match Giants-Pats Part I 10. SUPER BOWL XXIII

9. SUPER BOWL XLIV

6. SUPER BOWL XXXVIII

2. SUPER BOWL XLIII Pittsburgh 27, Arizona 23

San Fran 20, Cincinnati 16

New Orleans 31, Indy 17

Joe Montana, orchestrated a 92-yard drive in 11 plays with his late TD strike to John Taylor proving to be the difference.

The Saints shocked the Colts with an onside kick to start the second half and Tracy Porter’s interception clinched it for New Orleans.

8. SUPER BOWL XIII

New England 32, Carolina 29

Janet Jackson’s halftime “slip,” set the tone for a thrilling second half between

Steelers linebacker James Harrison accounted for what is arguably the most exciting play in Super Bowl history as he picked off Arizona quarterback Kurt Warner and returned it a record 100 yards for a touchdown right before halftime to give the Steelers a 17-7 lead. Warner provided big plays of his own, however, as he hit Larry Fitzgerald on a post pattern for a riveting 64yard touchdown which gave Arizona a 23-20 lead with 2:37 remaining. Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger would not be denied, however, as he found Santonio Holmes in the back corner of the end zone.

the Patriots and Panthers. Tom Brady set a Super Bowl record for most pass completions with 32.

7. SUPER BOWL III 5. SUPER BOWL XXV

Pittsburgh 35, Dallas 31

NY Jets 16, Baltimore 7

The Cowboys’ Jackie Smith dropped a sure touchdown in the third quarter as Dallas’ comeback attempt fell short against the Steel Curtain.

In perhaps the most meaningful Super Bowl of all-time, Joe Namath’s “guarantee” came to fruition as the AFL was forever legitimized.

NY Giants 20, Buffalo 19

Ottis Anderson was the standout performer for the Giants but this game is best

4. SUPER BOWL XXXIV

remembered for the “wide right” miss with eight seconds left by Buffalo kicker Scott Norwood.

When you can’t go anywhere without one. People over the world are dealing with the distressing effects of overactive bladder—just like you. You will also receive study medication or placebo (an inactive substance) and study-related medical care at no cost. You may also be compensated for time and travel. St. Louis 23, Tennessee 16

New England 20, St. Louis 17

Tennessee nearly erased a 16-0 deficit but St. Louis’ Mike Jones tackled receiver Kevin Dyson at the 1-yard line as time expired in the most remarkable final play in Super Bowl history. Rams QB Kurt Warner became a folk hero as he passed for 414 yards and two touchdowns to win game MVP.

The Patriots were 14-point underdogs against the “Greatest Show on Turf,” but a brilliant game plan against Marshall Faulk and the budding brilliance of Tom Brady proved too great for the Rams. Adam Vinatieri’s 48-yard field goal sparked the Pats dynasty as time expired in New Orleans.

1. SUPER BOWL XLII The storyline heading into this game will forever be difficult to beat. It featured an undefeated Patriots team that was an NFL record 16-0 in the 2007 regular season against the No. 6-seeded Giants. Throw in the whole New York-Boston thing and you had a mountain of hype leading up to the game. Then they played ... and the game surpassed the wildest of expectations. David Tyree’s helmet catch, arguably the most famous play in Super Bowl history, led to Eli Manning’s touchdown pass to Plaxico Burress in the corner of the end zone. Tom Brady, Randy Moss and the vaunted Patriots offense ran out of time in Arizona and New York hoisted its third Lombardi Trophy in franchise history. MATT BURKE
