Whole Foods paid to clean some of the soil along the Gowanus, a Superfund site.

A hip, organic-friendly store — even one topped with a greenhouse — apparently does not make the grade for some near the Gowanus Canal. Despite its Brooklyn-friendly ethos of natural eating and building community roots, Whole Foods, which seeks to open a store on the Gowanus Canal, has hardly won over every neighbor while awaiting the final OK it needs from the city to begin construction. The city’s Board of Standards and Appeals will meet Feb. 28 to approve or deny the store’s plans to build at the

But some are hoping to forestall the chain and the traffic its devotees of canvasclutching shoppers would bring. The Gowanus Institute, a think tank studying development issues, released a report arguing that the land would be better served by small businesses or manufacturing. Those industries, activists say, could create three times the

Whole Foods remains dedicated in their quest to open in the city’s hippest borough. If approved, this would be Whole Foods’ first store in artists is very rare in this city, and I don’t want it to disappear,” she wrote. Added Kaley Dickinson, “Gowanus should stay the way it is. Brooklyn. “We are very excited to bring a store to the Gowanus community,” spokesman Michael Sinatra said. But not all Brooklynites are joining the food fight. Paul Basile at the Gowanus Alliance, a group supporting business development, said Whole Foods should open as soon as possible. “They’ve been delayed long enough as far as we’re concerned,” he said. Takes a lot to win over Brooklyn Whole Foods has made several overtures to the borough in order to open. In 2010, the chain had to pay to clean the soil at the lot, which is a designated Superfund site. In response to community concern, it cut 10,000 square feet from the store, and trimmed the parking lot from 420 spaces to 250. It also agreed to build a greenhouse on top of the store for local produce.

Prince of Monaco Pierre Casiraghi and three other men were allegedly pummeled by restaurateur Adam Hock, 47, in a dispute at The Double Seven club at about 2 a.m. Saturday, police said. “An individual now known to me from the criminal complaint as the prince was ... harassing my client and acting like little children,” said Hock’s attorney Sal Strazzullo. He said Hock was acting in self-defense when he decked the 24-year-old prince and members of his entourage. REUTERS

A controversial hearing about replacing a piece of the iconic Brooklyn boardwalk with a hodgepodge of concrete and plastic planks was mysteriously pushed back — again. Today, the Parks Department was slated to argue before the city’s Design Commission for its plan to replace portions of Brighton Beach’s wooden boardwalk with an unpopular design: a 12-foot concrete strip with recyclable plastic lumber on either side. The commission must approve the plan before it can go forward, but rejected it when it was originally presented in October. “They didn’t get approval then because many of the commissioners were not convinced of the need to change the boardwalk,” Rob Burstein, president of the Coney-Brighton Boardwalk Alliance, said. “I run on the boardwalk every day. Changing it from wood to concrete and plastic will negatively impact this

neighborhood,” Burstein, a Coney Island native, said. “The vast majority of people want a true boardwalk.” The hearing was first scheduled for Jan. 30 but was moved to Feb. 21. The next possible date is March 12, Burstein said, adding that the constant scheduling changes made it a challenge for the community to organize. “This is my passion. In order to remain a boardwalk, it must have wood boards,” Burstein said. “It’s the one true respite from concrete we have in our

city.” Another community activist, Todd Dobrin, 41, president of Friends of the Boardwalk, said the Parks Department’s plan is faulted in many ways. Dobrin said that when the city replaced a portion of the boardwalk with concrete, between West 33rd and West 37th streets, water puddles formed and mounds of sand piled up on the concrete. New war? Debate could be final decider Metropolitik MICHAEL J. FROSCH SPECIAL GUEST COLUMNIST

I

@METROPOLITIK

t is safe to predict that Ron Paul will once again be the sole voice of reason on Iran, when he debates the unashamedly hawkish Santorum, Romney and Gingrich in Arizona tomorrow. But whether this trend will continue depends on the moderator, CNN’s John King. Will he allow the debate to be framed by the dangerous propaganda that has pervaded much of the reporting on Iran, or can he force the candidates to confront surprising new intelligence on Iran that

vindicates Ron Paul’s pleas for restraint? Sadly, the former scenario is far more likely. Even as the military-industrial complex continues to point its apocalyptic priapism at Iran, many in the media are sharing in the fluffing duties. ABC’s Diane Sawyer and Brian Ross claim to have evidence that Iran is waging “a kind of shadow war around the world, and that “Jewish places of worship in at least 10 U.S. cities have been told they could be targets. Not only do they neglect to mention who exactly is issuing these warnings, turns out that the “evidence they claim to have is nothing more than the speculative accusations of Israeli officials, who have blamed three recent bombings in Georgia, Thailand and India on Iran. Sawyer and Ross also fail to mention that, according to official investigators of the India bombing, the evidence appears

to implicate a Sunni group within India that is completely unconnected to Iran. Similarly, NBC News' Jim Miklaszewski boldly proclaims that the U.S. will be “the world’s first line of defense,

now that “Iran has already threatened to shut down the Strait of Hormuz, and “Iranian leaders have threatened all-out war! To his credit, Miklaszewski at least mentions in passing that Iran has “threat-

Dench is losing her vision Dame Judi Dench admits that she’s been battling macular degeneration, an eye condition that’s causing the 77-year-old to lose her vision. “I can’t read scripts any more because of the trouble with my eyes,” she tells the Daily Mirror. “And so somebody comes in and reads them to me, like telling me a story.” But Dench, who’s undergoing treatment for the condition, doesn’t have any plans to give up acting. “If I retire, nothing will work any more, and it’s

Lindsay Lohan is set to host “Saturday Night Live” on March 3, but the gig didn’t come without a fair amount of begging and pleading, according to TMZ. Sources say that with her community service nearly complete, the troubled actress is hoping to kick-start her career comeback. To that end, Lohan reached out to the show’s executive producer, Lorne Michaels, suggesting that she appear on the program. This will be Lohan’s fourth time hosting “SNL.” And I know you will be tuning in for all of the wrong reasons.

Mark Wahlberg has found an effective way to deter his kids from getting tattoos: bringing them along to his painful tattooremoval sessions. “I don’t want my kids getting tattoos. And I wanted them to be [removed] by the time I did ‘The Fighter,’ because putting makeup on and covering them up has always been a pain in the butt,” Wahlberg told the “Today” show. “I’ve taken my two older kids to the procedure so they see how painful it is and what I have to go through.”

Blush Horizon de Chanel

On the inspiration behind his spring 2012 collection

Vernis nail trilogy: April, May and June

On color

“I chose spring horizons [at] sunset and sunrise, as it can be the most amazing moment of the day. I was afraid it would be a bit kitschy, mellow and corny but it’s also very beautiful. You can do anything you want with the products in the collection, whether you want to look sophisticated and intense or fresh and funky.

“The most classical shade and the first to be released is April. Spring is coming, but you’re still in a wintry mood, so you want a darker shade that’s flattering and not too flashy. May is pink-y and girlie, and June has a beach-y feel to it. People will have gotten a bit of sun and color on their skin and can start wearing brighter colors. ... The shades are anticipated not because of me, but because they’re Chanel. I have the advantage that I can link my creations with the fashion show — it gives them a reason to exist.

“It took 24 tries in the lab before we got the right shade for Le Vernis in June. I wanted it to be the color of this plastic bag handle I got from some random shop in the States. The bag was black and the handle was this beautiful orange plastic. It had to be that exact shade, but in lacquer. It had to look just like the plastic, not transparent or pearly.

Philips’ Top 3 tips: Invest in an eyelash curler: “All women should have one. This also applies to women who don’t wear makeup. It’s not a dangerous tool, although a lot of people are terrified of it. One pinch to the lashes can work miracles as it opens up your eyes. Add some mascara, and you’re ready to go.” Apply just the right amount: “It’s a criminal offense to wear too much makeup, just as it is to wear too little. It’s all about striking a balance and wearing a look with confidence. Something that always looks wrong is not blending your foundation in so that you can see the line between the face and the neck.” Beauty starts from within: “At some point we have to realize that we’re getting older and it’s not all about [products]. If you live wrong, it will impact your looks. You know the tricks: Eat more vegetables, stop smoking, drink water and cut back on alcohol.”

London Fashion Week reviews Burberry Prorsum

1

This was a hit-and-miss collection for Christopher Bailey. On the one hand, his country and military-inspired outerwear displayed the craftsmanship that makes a woman shop off the Burberry runway, season after season (the house offers up 1 items from its collection for order during the show). On the other, the collection seemed to have a flourish or two too many and could have benefited from a tighter edit. Case in point: the endless variations of the peplum. That said, there was much to covet, including a series of belted tweed country jackets, a striped trench coat and a chic update on

the fur-collared shearling jacket. KENYA HUNT

Topshop Unique

2

The clothes on the runway took a surprisingly scaledback turn — a total surprise for the brand that has sent models down the runway dressed like club-hopping Egyptians and Cruella de Vils in the past — and that wasn’t a bad thing. The col-

15

lection was largely based on military-style outerwear in muted shades of olive green, khaki, burgundy and black — including tailored wool coats loaded with asymmetrical layering and zipper embellishments. They came paired with slouchy, utilitarian jumpsuits, dungarees and leather-trimmed pleated kilts, the last of which were the most covetable pieces from the collection. KH

Mulberry

The house’s creative director, Emma Hill, clearly wanted to cause a fright this season with a slew of beautiful monsters. What emerged from the depths were oversize, shaggy fur coats, parkas and flying jackets with cozy hoods in earthy tones. These pieces were thrown over mottled, tie-dyed and Aztec zigzagged silk and lace dresses. But we can’t talk about Mulberry without mentioning this season’s ‘It’ bag, aptly named “Del Rey” after Lana (who was sitting front row), detailed in ostrich, metallic snake and fur print. It’s fierce. RICHARD PECKETT

This guy vs. Nicolas Cage Who will win? You’ve got to see ‘Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance’ to find out Good luck, Johnny Whitworth When you see Johnny Whitworth, the first thing that probably comes to mind is “Empire Records,” in which he starred opposite Liv Tyler as the lovesick A.J. Eerily. The actor has barely aged over the past 17 years in real life, but onscreen in “Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance,” he’s almost unrecognizable as Blackout, a villainous light-manipulator who makes trouble for Nicolas Cage’s cursed flaming-skulled biker. What can you tell us about how your character, Blackout, is portrayed in the movie without giving too much away?

Q&A You go up against the Ghost Rider himself, Nicolas Cage. Was that intimidating? It’s a pleasure to work with Nic. What was cool was that I didn’t understand anything that was going on in Romania [where the film was shot], but we could be in a cab or a restaurant or whatever and we’d hear their language and then, “Nicolas Cage.” The only thing I would understand was “Nicolas Cage” and then “ciorba,” which is soup.

I don’t really know how to answer that without giving too much away. But I can tell you that he’s more badass. He’s got some cooler powers. He was given cooler powers than in the comic. [In the comics] he was born basically a mutant, and when he went around everything turned black, and then he kind of identified with vampires and had these prosthetic fangs put in and claws, and then he was an assassin kind of guy. In our thing, he actually can control what’s going on with the light. It’s much cooler. And he has powers that make him ... a good villain for the Ghost Rider.

Johnny Whitworth is almost unrecognizable as Blackout, a villainous light-manipulator in “Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance.”

Did you see the first “Ghost Rider” film?

I did. ... I’ve got to be careful how I use my words. I saw the first one. I think I was there opening day. I go to see all of them; I’m a total geek like that. As a geek yourself, were you a fan of the comics?

Yeah, yeah. I mean, he was definitely the coolest-looking hero, but I never followed that particular comic too much. My little brother did, and that was my introduction to it when we were younger.

was my guy. But I wasn’t actually a big comic-book reader. I didn’t read very many comics at all. When I say “Batman,” I was a kid and Adam West was Batman. That’s what I watched, so I was inspired to be Batman through that. It was a cool show. I still watch it every now and then when I flip past it. How is it taking on a villain role?

It’s fun. It’s challenging just for the aesthetic reasons, and it’s fun because villains are fun. Bad guys are more interesting, you know?

What are your titles of choice?

Well, you have to say “Batman,” you know? It always has been a favorite since I was a kid. That

More money, more problems DEBORAH FEINGOLD

Writing what she knows: The underbelly of New York society and all of its luxuries are uncovered in Cristina Alger’s new thriller, ‘The Darlings’

C

Alger came to terms with her new title.

ristina Alger, 32, has achieved more professionally than most people can dream of: An undergrad degree from Harvard, followed by a gig at Goldman Sachs, then New York University for law school, capped off with a stint as a bankruptcy lawyer at a whiteshoe firm. All of her high-profile accomplishments led up to the most recent addition to her résumé: author. Her novel, “The Darlings,” about a privileged New York family who are ensnared in a Madoff-esque Ponzi scheme, is out now. Alger talked to Metro about how even though she is now a novelist, she still has a hard time saying it.

What is it about rich people that makes them such good

Did you find it difficult to tackle the financial and legal themes in “The Darlings” in an approachable manner?

Cristina Alger

I did. I sent [drafts] to nonlawyer and non-finance friends to see if it resonated with them. I find white-collar crime interesting, but it can be really dry on the page.

So, do you call yourself a novelist now?

For a while, the long answer was, “I was a lawyer but now I’m working on a book.” It’s taken me a little while to get my head around the fact I’m

now a professional writer. It’s a profession I sort of babystepped into. I was writing while I was working a bazillion hours a week as a bankruptcy attorney. But once I started with my agent, I started thinking about it as a fulltime occupation. The downside: You now get a writer’s paycheck.

[Laughs] Yes, but it pays in other ways, though! I get a lot more sleep, and it’s a lot more fun.

A sense of humor at work can go a long way for both morale and your career Why you might want to make a joke — or at least laugh at one DIGITAL VISION

Go ahead — smile at work.

As you craft your next rĂŠsumĂŠ, consider adding some comedy to the skills inventory. Student suspended for writing about professor crush A student at Oakland University was suspended after turning in a journal for a writing class that held his explicit thoughts about his female professors. According to Inside Higher Education, Joseph Corlett had several entries that described the physical characteristics of his professors, including the woman who taught his writing class. One entry, titled “Hot For Teacher, went into detail about one of his professors while also writing about how much he’d been drinking before beginning his notes. His racy writings have been posted online by Foundation for Individual Rights in Education, which is advocating for Corlett, who is 56, to be reinstated. Corlett was suspended for three semesters. Re: ‘Who decides religion’s role in American life’ Is it not because of your bias that you distorted the facts today by not reporting why student Sandra Fluke was not qualified to sit on the Oversight Committee? Is it not bias that has you distorting the story by suggesting the panelist were there to discuss “birth control and menstrual cramps”? The panel was all representatives of religious organizations. Not students. Yes, it would have been nice to have a female religious rep there. The panel was addressing the issue of the government and religious freedom, not menstrual cramps. Distort much to serve your bias? I think so. Thank you for proving your bias so quickly.

Like it or not there are times federal law must trump religious sensibilities, otherwise you would soon see a serious breakdown in civil society. For example, doctors and nurses refuse to use particular procedures or medications due to their personal religious beliefs, even if it saves a patient’s life. This doesn’t mean federal policy can’t be worked in ways that respect people’s religious beliefs, but in the end we all need to play by the same rules — the faithful included. OK, seriously, stop it with the Whitney Houston business. She’s no hero, not immortal, nor will she ever be. While her music may have been inspiring and it’s a tragic story, she made her choices. I feel sorry for her family. Stop treating her any differently than anyone else just because she sang. I doubt you treat everyday people battling demons with such compassion.

Houston, we still have a problem Should the flag only be halfmast for those who died that were in public service or who died in service to their country? Or should it at the discretion of the governors who decide to whom they want to extend the honor? I don’t understand those who are outraged at Gov. February brings dreams of heading off to somewhere different, uncrowded and with a horizon that defies the eye For mid-winter mini-breaks, consider Albuquerque, the high-desert jewel of the southwest Here’s where to stay, what to see and what to eat to get the most out of the Duke City JAY BLACKWOOD

Where to go If you have kids, Albuquerque is home to a number of fine museums, including the delightfully deadpan and unique National Museum of Nuclear Science & History (601 Eubank Blvd. SE), which is kind of like a companion piece to the Smithsonian Air & Space Museum, only filled with deactivated missiles. Less fusionpowered is the AndersonAbruzzo Albuquerque International Balloon Museum (9201 Balloon Museum Dr. NE), which is logically located next to the site of the world-famous annual Balloon Fiesta. The ABQ BioPark complex encompasses the city’s zoo, aquarium and botanic gardens, which spotlight the indigenous flora and fauna.

CHANGE YOUR CITY VIEWS Albuquerque’s Sandia Mountain. The mountain is named for the pink sunset colors (sandia means watermelon in Spanish).

Where to stay In addition to all the usual chain hotels (with rooms available for less than $100 per night), Albuquerque features dozens of homey bed and breakfasts for the traveler who’d like a green-chile omelet included in his or her room charge. In the Old Town area, the Bottger Mansion (110 San Felipe St NW) dates from 1910 while the Casa de Suenos (310 Rio Grande Blvd. SW) offers individual, private guest houses.

Pack your gloves First, a note for the map-challenged: New Mexico and Arizona are not only different states, but they have vastly different climates. So you shouldn’t expect Albuquerque to feel like Phoenix in the dead of winter. The city’s elevation ranges between 4,000 and 5,000 feet above sea level, and the air can be parchingly dry. Winter temperatures are in the 40s to 50s range, and can be sub-freezing at night. Yes, it snows (which means you can go skiing if you drive about four hours north). Pack gloves.

What to eat Everything, if possible. The state’s distinctive cuisine is based around local chiles, which range from tongue-tingling to face-melting. For a large-scale dining experience visit El Pinto (10500 Fourth St. NW), which resembles nothing so much as a southwestern Tavern on the Green on steroids. The restaurant, which has catered more than one White House Cinco de Mayo celebration, is justifiably famous for its tamales, a New Mexico Christmas tradition. For a quick breakfast, stop by Golden Crown Panaderia (1103 Mountain Rd. NW) for empanadas, green chile bread and half a dozen varieties of the official state cookies, biscochitos. Wherever you go, we recommend smuggling home as much local salsa and chile sauce as you can fit in your suitcase.

NETS (10-24)

92 KNICKS (16-17)

What went wrong ...

1

In the news

Deron Williams was determined from the tip to get the better of Jeremy Lin and the Knicks and his box score showed it.

A.J. blasts Yanks Nothing like a change of scenary to bring out the truth. Former Yankees pitcher A.J. Burnett was very talkative in Pirates camp yesterday and had nothing good to say about New York. Burnett said he let too many people “tinker with” his mechanics on the Yankees and said he’d be happy to “get the joy back into the game.” He certainly won’t be under any pressure in Pittsburgh.

Melo a ‘Net’ loss

Knicks add Anthony to lineup, but result is an ugly defeat Deron Williams puts on show, scores 38 Lin a nonfactor, fouls out for first time Linsanity was temporarily put on ice due to the red-hot shooting of the Nets, as the Knicks fell to their cross-river rivals, 100-92. It was almost poetic justice that Nets point guard Deron Williams almost single-handedly destroyed the Knicks as it was at his expense when the Jeremy Lin sensation began in New Jersey over a month ago. Williams, who once went on

11

Carmelo Anthony had just 11 points on 4-of-11 shooting in his first game back. He also had six turnovers. record saying he wasn’t impressed with the Linsanity craze, backed up his chatter

by registering a game-high 38 points, including 8-of-14 from 3. Williams wasn’t alone with his long-range marksmanship as rookie swingman MarShon Brooks added 18 points, with two made 3s, while DeShawn Stevenson chipped in with 14 points on the strength of four 3s. The Knicks led after one quarter, 21-18, but that was

about as good as it got for the home team as the Nets turned a 12-point deficit into a lead that got as high as 18, good for a 30-point turnaround. The Knicks got the deficit to as low as seven points midway through the final quarter, but a late 7-0 Nets run restored order for New Jersey. TONY WILLIAMS

Live by the 3 — The Knicks had no answer for the barrage of 3s by the Nets, as they went 15-of-31 from behind the arc. Deron Williams, who’s on record saying he’s not been impressed with the Linsanity, backed up his chatter by scoring 38, including eight 3-pointers.

2

Brick city — The Knicks couldn’t shoot straight, as they shot 41 percent from the field, including 5-of-19 from 3. Both Amar’e Stoudemire and Jeremy Lin struggled, as they combined to shoot 14-of-35 from the field

3

No comeback — Not even Linsanity could overcome an 18point deficit to start the fourth quarter — no matter how badly the Nets tried to give away the game. The Knicks had themselves to blame, as they did very little right. METRO/TW

No Mo for Yankees’ Rivera? GETTY IMAGES

Yankees fans better get their fill of Mariano Rivera this year if the reports coming out of Yankees camp are true. Jack Curry of the YES Network reported yesterday afternoon that “one Yankee executive who has had discussions with Rivera said he has observed signs that 2012 will be it for Mariano.” Rivera made his first appearance at Yankees camp yesterday and spoke to the media for the first time.

Rivera had 44 saves in 2011, tied for fourth-most in a single season in his career.

44

When asked if he knew when he would retire, his response was “I know now. I just don't want to tell you.” Rivera went on to say that he will make any possible announcement on his decision after the season. Rivera is in the final year

Rivera

of a two-year contract. He will make $15 million, though all the money is deferred. “It is hard when you have the ability to continue and you have to make that decision,” Rivera told reporters. “It is hard. For me, baseball is not everything.” “I won’t be there dragging my arm to pitch,” Rivera said. “I’m not going to start pitching with my left arm. I want to be able to compete.” METRO
