Cops: Man hid marijuana in underpants A 22-year-old man was busted at a pizza parlor for allegedly stuffing 23 bags of pot down his pants, according to DNAInfo. Tyrel Henderson, of Brooklyn, was charged with criminal possession of a controlled substance, resisting arrest and possession of marijuana. Cops say he dropped a bag of cocaine. During a search, they said they found a stash of marijuana. METRO/EAE

Cop towers bring mixed perspectives Watchtowers may cut down on confrontations between cops and citizens But some residents wonder if they deter crime One officer in a watchtower can replace five in the street, one security expert says PEARL GABEL
NYPD officers keep an eye on city streets from 25 feet up, but Brooklyn residents say two nearby SkyWatch observation towers impact more than crime. Residents say the tower’s presence results in fewer foot patrols by local officers, which may reduce the number of confrontations between cops and citizens. “Police brutality is real,” Peter, who did not wish to give his last name, said near a watchtower at Myrtle and Throop avenues, “but it’s the ones on foot that give us the trouble.” NYPD spokeswoman Cheryl Crispin said that although “there is no way to measure” whether the towers work, “the community loves them.” But some skeptics of SkyWatch towers believe they af-
NEW JERSEY. Gov. Chris Christie did not have kind words Wednesday for the NYPD after reports that they tracked Muslim students throughout New Jersey. He said he doesn’t recall being briefed about the surveillance and was “concerned” that he was kept in the dark. “I know they think their jurisdiction is the world,” Christie said on Townsquare Media’s “Ask the Governor” radio program. “Their jurisdiction is New York City.” METRO/EAE
Report: Cops ordered to go to rehab WASHINGTON HEIGHTS. Two NYPD detectives were ordered to rehab after they allegedly spent hours drinking at La Parilla restaurant when they were supposed to be on duty, according to DNAInfo. News of the order came after a waitress accused officers of sexually assaulting her. All four officers are on modified duty. METRO/EAE
One dead, two injured in West Side crash UPPER WEST SIDE. A man was killed Thursday in a car crash on the West Side Highway, according to police. Officers said a 20-year-old man lost control of his vehicle, sending the car into the right guardrail at 96th Street. The car flipped over, flying into the left lane. One passenger, a 26-year-old man, died while the driver and another were injured. METRO/EAE

Cops: Men used missing man’s credit cards in NY Authorities released images Thursday showing two men allegedly using a missing Brooklyn man’s credit cards just hours after his charred body was found in Pennsylvania. Lehigh County police found the body of Whisk Café owner Josh Rubin, 30, in a remote area of South Whitehall Township Nov. 1. Twelve hours after they found his remains, two unidentified men allegedly
used Rubin’s credit cards to make multiple purchases at several stores at the Woodbury Commons Premium Outlets upstate, police said. Rubin’s death was ruled a homicide, and police are still actively searching for his killer or killers. Police believe he was shot and then lit on fire. They are asking the public’s assistance in identifying the two men. METRO/EAE

C’mon, you think I don’t see you too?” Melissa Woods of FLIR Security Systems, which manufactures the towers, acknowledged the perception of the towers as intruders. “A lot of people feel like it’s Big Brother, but that was never our intent,” she says. “These were designed to protect people and prevent new problems.” BY MALIK SINGLETON

Employees fired following elevator death The elevator company under investigation following a fatal accident has fired five of its employees. Transel Elevator dismissed the workers Wednesday, including mechanic Michael Hill, who is accused of an error that may have allowed the elevator to rise with its doors open. Advertising executive Suzanne Hart was crushed to death when she stepped onto the lift at her Madison Avenue office building Dec. 14. The horrifying incident happened just two minutes after Transel employees left the elevator. A city investigation into the accident found that workers “failed to follow basic safety procedures.” Hill admitted that he used a wire to override the elevator’s system, which allowed the lift to move with its door open while workers repaired it. Hill said he took the wire out before the incident and brought it to another job. Investigators said they found a wire near the elevator’s control box. “Transel confirms its stated commitment to safety and has enhanced its operations to further ensure that the highest level of safety is followed by its mechanics,” the company said in a statement. Woman arrested in alleged hotel scam The Manhattan district attorney charged a woman in a scam where she reportedly posed as a Hilton Hotel employee and promised people that she could secure them
jobs in exchange for a fee. Katia Gaton, 41, is accused of scamming at least five people out of a total of $13,600 by asking them to pay her “application fees” and the cost of uniforms they'd need on the job. The district attorney said Gaton has never worked at the Hilton New York. She allegedly promised her victims full-time jobs as bellhops, housekeepers and front desk assistants.

According to the DA, Gaton brought the job seekers to the lobby of the Hilton, promising them an interview with the manager. She would then disappear and later return, telling her victims that the manager was unavailable. She even allegedly offered them “tours” of the hotel’s public areas and sometimes set a start dates. More blacks, Latinos accepted to elite schools
Eliminate Painful Withdrawal & Relapse
The number of black and Latino students accepted to eight of New York City’s highly selective high schools increased 14 percent from last year, according to newly released data from the Department of Education. Admission to one of the specialized schools, like The Bronx High School of Science, Brooklyn Technical High School or Stuyvesant High School, is determined by the results of the Specialized High Schools Admissions Test. Approximately 28,000 students took the test, but only 5,360 students received an offer, according to the DOE. Among those students that took the test, more than 730
black and Hispanic students were offered admission at specialized schools, compared to 642 in 2011 and 653 in 2010. Black students received 6 percent of the offers, and Latinos accounted for 8 percent. Of all of the students that the specialized high schools admitted, Asian students were offered the most entries, with 2,490, or 46 percent. White students were offered 23 percent of the slots. One education official told Metro that the numbers represented definite progress, but that the DOE has more work to do. EMILY ANNE EPSTEIN emily.epstein@metro.us

Tune in
FOX
TELEVISION
It’s time for the networks to do a little spring cleaning on their prime time lineups A look at the new shows to find what’s in season and what’s out of date ‘Touch’ Premieres March 22 at 9 p.m. on Fox The plot: Kiefer Sutherland plays Martin, a widower struggling to provide for his emotionally challenged mute son, Jake, who has the ability to see patterns that connect everything in the world. The interconnectivity of seemingly disparate people is revealed through Jake’s actions and Martin’s attempts to understand them. Smells like: “Heroes” meets “Crash.” Tim Kring created both “Heroes” and “Touch.” And although Jake seems to have a supernatural view of the world, Kring insists the kid is not an XMan-in-the-making. “In terms of Jake being like a character on ‘Heroes,’” Kring says, “we probably had some characters that had abilities that would be in that [same] category, but this is not a superpower idea. It’s more of a mystical or spiritual idea.” Spring fresh test: 88888

The winner:
‘Awake’
Thursdays at 10 p.m. on NBC The plot: Detective Michael Britten (Jason Isaacs) lives two realities — one in which his wife is dead, the other in which his son has passed away — after a deadly car accident. He can’t figure out which one is reality and which one is a dream. Smells like: A mix between “Memento” and “Lone Star.” “Awake” creator Kyle Killen was also behind the short-lived drama “Lone Star,” about a con man who led two very different lives. “There were aspects of ‘Lone Star’ that were more difficult to get a wider, broader audience interested in,” Killen admits. “[The main character] was somebody that you couldn’t decide if you liked or hated.
Jason Isaacs is living in two worlds on “Awake.”
Britten’s dilemma is something that we’re not only sympathetic for, but somehow we want him to win. We’re all behind him. Everybody is telling him that he can only have one [reality] or
JOHN RUSSO/NBC ABC/BILL MATLOCK
‘GCB’ Premieres Sunday at 10 p.m. on ABC The plot: Scandal forces a former mean girl (Leslie Bibb) to move back to her well-heeled Dallas community, where her high school frenemies still live. Smells like: “Desperate Housewives”: Texas edition. “GCB” is drawing comparisons to “Desperate Housewives” for its cast of overthe-top female characters and soapy story lines. But producer Robert Harling — who wrote about another group of strongwilled Southern women in “Steel Magnolias” — doesn’t entirely agree with the parallels.
“The fabulous thing about ‘Desperate Housewives’ is it’s sort of universal. It could be happening everywhere,” Harling says. “Our world could only take place in Texas and only in Dallas and only in a particular part of Dallas.” So is “GCB” a send-up of the characters found in Dallas, or more of a love letter to them? “The great thing about Texas people — and Dallas especially, because I have lots of family there — is they get the joke,” Harling says. “They understand that they are larger than life, and they love that. It’s more of a celebration of that whole Texas thing.” Spring fresh test: 88888

Premieres March 13 at 9:30 p.m. on NBC The plot: Aspiring fashion designers compete to become household names — literally, because the winning looks will be available for purchase in Macy’s, H&M and Saks Fifth Avenue stores the day after each episode airs. Jessica Simpson, Nicole Richie and John Varvatos serve as celebrity mentors. Smells like: “Project Runway” on QVC. “Fashion Star” creator/ host Elle Macpherson says her mission was “to create a show that was as much about shopping as it was about fashion and capitalizing on interactive capacities and technologies so that people could actually buy what they were seeing immediately. We felt that was new and very relevant to where we are today.” Spring fresh test: 88888
Premieres March 15 at 8 p.m. on ABC The plot: A former CIA agent tears through Europe in search of her son, whom she suspects has been abducted. Smells like: “Taken,” with Ashley Judd in the Liam Neeson role. Remember that scene in “Taken”: “I don’t know who you are. But if you don’t let my daughter go, I will find you. I will kill you,” Neeson says. To what lengths is Judd’s character willing to go in “Missing”? “In a flashback, you see my husband and me working as CIA operatives together, and we are faced with some really wrenching moral dilemmas,” Judd says. “[Now the question is, ‘Will] I potentially set aside my values and integrity in order to accomplish what seems to be a more precious goal, which is save my child?’” Spring Judd fresh test: 88888 ABC/BOB D'AMICO
‘Frozen Planet’ Premieres March 18 at 8 p.m. on Discovery The plot: This seven-hour documentary from the team behind “Planet Earth” uses its incredible filmmaking technology to capture an unprecedented glimpse of life at Earth’s polar regions. Smells like: “Planet Earth” on ice. “We were really motivated as a team to go and create this kind of ultimate portrait of the polar regions, because I think everyone’s aware that there’s a lot of change going on,” says series producer Vanessa Berlowitz, referring to global warming. “In some ways, we feel that this series may be a last chance to see these great wildernesses on our planet before they change forever. I hope that’s going to be the legacy of the series.” Spring fresh test: 88888

‘Magic City’
‘Scandal’
Premieres April 6 at 10 p.m. on Starz The plot: In late-1950s Miami, the swanky Miramar Playa Hotel plays host to everyone from Frank Sinatra to the CIA as Castro’s army rises in Cuba. The series follows the drama surrounding the family (headed by Jeffrey Dean Morgan) that runs the resort. Smells like: “Mad Men” with gangsters. “Magic City” creator Mitch Glazer grew up in Miami Beach and says he’s been “squirreling away” stories from this era to write into a show. “The cool thing was, besides the beauty and the glamour [of the ’50s-’60s], there were also really amazing things happening in the world,” Glazer says. Spring fresh test: 88888
Premieres April 5 at 10 p.m. on ABC The plot: Kerry Washington stars as a Washington, D.C., “fixer,” the head of a crisismanagement firm who can resolve any conflict — except those in her personal life. Smells like: “Grey’s Anatomy” in the capitol. “Grey’s Anatomy” creator Shonda Rhimes strips her trademark female lead of scrubs and transports her to D.C. for “Scandal.” “I love my shows that have stethoscopes in them,” says Rhimes, who also created “Private Practice.” “This is just a different story. My shows are not necessarily medical shows or political shows. They’re shows about strong, smart women and flawed, interesting people.” Spring fresh test: 88888
‘Don’t Trust the B— in Apartment 23’ Premieres April 11 at 9:30 p.m. on ABC The plot: The unlikable Chloe (Krysten Ritter) attempts to rip off her naive new roommate (Dreama Walker) in NYC, but may have met her match. Smells like: “2 Broke Girls,” but way more bitchy. Chole is a pretty horrible person — until she does something completely crude and unorthodox in the name of helping her new roomie. “It’s fun when you get to play somebody so bold and badass and unapologetic,” Ritter says of playing the “B.” “It’s a really complex character. It’s really just the most fun I’ve ever had in my life.” Spring fresh test: 88888

Premieres April 15 at 10:30 p.m. on HBO The plot: Writer/actress Lena Dunham brings her jaded take on life as a twentysomething in NYC to television — with the help of executive producer Judd Apatow. Smells like: Dunham’s film “Tiny Furniture,” moving the hipster pathos to Brooklyn. “It’s closely based on my own experience of getting out of college and not having a sense of whether I would ever get to do the thing I wanted to do,” Denham says of her inspiration for “Girls.” “I’ve always been someone who feels better if I see what I’m going through in a movie — I’m like, ‘OK. It’s not the worst.’ So I really wanted that for me and for other people.” Spring fresh test: 88888
Julia Louis-Dreyfus is vice president in HBO’s “Veep,” premiering next month.
‘Veep’ Premieres April 22 at 10 p.m. on HBO The plot: Political satirist Armando Iannucci (“In the Loop”) is behind this chronicle of the day-to-day minutiae of Selina Meyer, vice president of the United States (Julia LouisDreyfus). Smells like: A funny version of “The West Wing.” “Watching the political process at the moment, your
instinct now is to laugh because the alternative is to cry,” Iannucci says. “I think a lot of people are genuinely frustrated because they don’t understand why so many clearly very able people concentrated in one locale can’t sort something out. It seems to be the right moment to come up with something that starts asking you or showing you how this happens.” Spring fresh test: 88888 AMBER RAY

The Lorax mourns another Truula tree.

Ted must find a living tree for Audrey, who has never seen one, and find the mythological Onceler who killed them all years before. Seuss’ stirring fable verges on somber, but eye-popping animation and humor keep it kidfriendly — “unless, as the rock warns. ANNE BRODIE

that will get them noticed and attract otherwise unattainable ladies. Thomas, whose parents are out of town for the weekend, wants to throw himself a birthday bash that will be “big enough to be cool. He figures 50 people maximum should do the trick. But his foul-mouthed friend, Costa has other plans. He spreads the word through every medium possible — including Craigslist — and suddenly this party gets absolutely out of control (think the nights “The Hangover guys can’t remember, but with more drinking, drugs and damage). Such is the case with the film based on Nick Flynn’s book, “Another Bulls—t Night in Suck City. The premise is heartbreaking: After having been estranged from his father for most of his life, aspiring writer Nick Flynn encounters his father (De Niro) when the elder Flynn checks himself into the homeless shelter where Nick works. Packed with raw emotion, witty dialogue and powerful performances, “Being Flynn delivers a wallop, even if it occasionally gets diluted by segments that should’ve ended up on the cutting room floor. Happy birthday indeed, Bieber
When you’re the most famous 18-year-old in the world, cake ain’t cutting it. No, Justin Bieber had a much better Thursday than you did. Let’s start with the gifts. On Wednesday, his manager stopped by “The Ellen Degeneres Show” to surprise him with a Fisker Karma — that’s an eco-friendly sports car for all of you Kia drivers — estimated to be worth at least $100,000. Ryan Seacrest’s offering of a Costco membership was, admittedly, not as extravagant, but Bieber will make up for it with his gifts to himself: He’s looking to buy two L.A.-area birthday mansions priced between $6 million-$8 million, according to TMZ. He spent Thursday, we can only assume, driving his new car to scope out his potential new Hollywood pads — when he wasn’t parachuting, that is. Justin! The whole point of being 18 is that you don’t yet need to buy things and jump out of planes to feel alive. Have fun, kid, but set some serious funds aside for 28.
whether or not she’ll start a family — Jennifer Aniston would like everyone to know that she doesn’t give “a crap what other people think,” and says she’s happier “than I’ve ever been,” the actress reveals in an interview with CBS This Morning. “[Having a baby] doesn’t measure the level of my happiness or my success in my

George Clooney: Classy as ever
Don’t look to George Clooney to put a rest to the gay rumors that follow him around. “I think it’s funny, but the last thing you’ll ever see me do is jump up and down, saying, ‘These are lies!’ That would be unfair and unkind to my good friends in the gay community,” Clooney tells the Advocate. As for how he’ll go down in history, he’s thought of that, too, and doesn’t care: “I’ll be long dead and there will still be people who say I was gay. I don’t give a s—.” In that case, we’d just like to throw this out there for the books: Clooney was also an avid Metro reader, who had various liaisons with the talented Features writers.

Wright
By the time you get home from work you’re starving, tired and ready to pop a frozen burrito in the micro. (Or, even better yet, order pizza!) But there’s still hope for home-prepared meals in your future. U.K. culinary star Sophie Wright — the youngest head chef in England at age 20 — insists making dinner doesn’t have to be time- or labor-intensive. “You just need to be well organized,” says Wright. “You need to have an idea [of a recipe] in the back of your head. Maybe flick through a cookbook the night before. Then, rather than stopping for a slice of pizza on the way home, stop at the supermarket and pick up a few bits and make a really nice meal.” If this sounds like a case of
NYC’s #1 FREE DAILY
Time to toss your takeout menus Wright’s tips Keep a nonstick frying pan. Always stock your pantry with olive oil, salt, pepper and staple spices: ground cumin, ground coriander, chili and paprika. You can make anything taste really good with these. Freeze extra fresh herbs so you have them ready to go for the next time. When chopping an onion, chop an extra one and store it in a sandwich bag in your fridge for the next day. When cooking sweet potato or butternut squash, don’t bother peeling. You can eat the skin, and it will add flavor and texture to your dish.
easier-said-than-done, Wright shows us how in her new book, “Home at 7, Dinner at 8,” which is filled with 80 easy, fancy-sounding recipes, such as Honey Roasted Pork Tenderloin and Red Wine, Gorgonzola and Orange Risotto that can be in your belly in less than an hour. Taking into account that Wright chops food a lot faster than us novice cooks, the chef added on extra time to each recipe and made sure not to use too many pans (“It’s horrible washing up after you cook”). But the true test: “My guinea pig is my boyfriend, who is the most incompetent cook,” she says, laughing. “I know that if he can do it, anyone can.” TINA CHADHA

Baked salmon with pancetta, potatoes, tomatoes and asparagus “This isn’t so much a recipe as a mixture of ingredients thrown together that taste great when combined and cook in about the same time. Salmon is a fish that can have a bit of a bad name, as people tend to overcook it and serve it with the same old accompaniments. I promise that this combination of flavors and ingredients work in perfect harmony.”
Ingredients 4
tablespoons olive oil, plus extra for oiling 8 potatoes salt and freshly ground black pepper 2 teaspoons dried oregano 4 salmon fillets, weighing about 5½ to 6 ounces each 20 spears of asparagus, trimmed 20 cherry plum tomatoes on
the vine, halved slices of pancetta or prosciutto juice of 1 lemon
Directions 1. Preheat the oven to 375°F. Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper and rub with a little oil. Slice the potatoes (with their skins left on) to the thickness of about ⅛ inch. Lay the potatoes over the baking sheet, trying not to overlap them too much. Sprinkle generously with salt, pepper and oregano; drizzle with 2 tablespoons of olive oil. Put in the hot oven for 15 minutes. 2. Remove the baking sheet from the oven and increase the temperature to 425°F. Lay the salmon fillets on top of the potatoes and scatter around the asparagus spears and tomatoes. Drape the pancetta or Parma ham over the top. Drizzle over the rest of the olive oil and put the pan back in the oven for an additional 10 to 15 minutes until everything is cooked through. 3. Squeeze over the lemon juice and serve immediately. Serves 4

‘Backwards’ looks forward
PETER JAMES ZIELINSKI/BC/EFA
Alan Cumming and the “Broadway Backwards” cast perform “Don’t Tell Mama” from “Cabaret” in 2011.
Seven years ago, theater vet Robert Bartley was looking for a way to give back to New York’s GLBT community. But he wanted it to go beyond the usual charity concert. That’s when the idea struck: taking everyone’s favorite Broadway numbers and gender-swapping the roles, so men perform classically female roles and vice versa. “In making the switch, [the songs] mean something more, something different, to the gay and lesbian audience,” Bartley explains. “You hear it in a way that suddenly has a personal meaning that’s very powerful.” After increasingly successful years, “Broadway Backwards 6”

raised a record-breaking $281,243 for Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS in 2011. On March 5, “Broadway Backwards 7” hopes to do it again. “I heard from a little bird at Broadway Cares that we may just break last year’s record on Monday, but we’ll need to sell
every last ticket,” the show’s creator/director says. “But it’s not about breaking records. It’s about helping more people.” Bartley tells us Robin De Jesus is singing “My Fair Lady,” and Betty Buckley will do “one of the greatest (and bloodiest) Stephen Sondheim musicals.” Also onstage are Adam Pascal, Andrew Rannells and George Takei. “Oh, and we’ll have one of the great duets from ‘Chess.’ And there will be a little ‘West Side Story,’ ‘Aida’ … I think that’s enough for now. You’ll see the rest on Monday.”

Social issues are a distraction for GOP The Republicans have a dilemma: Their candidates have veered off course. The shift from debating relevant issues to denigrating personal attacks is not in the electorate’s best interest. The contentious positions on extreme social conservative issues are divisive to the party, and might cause them to lose independents. If the party cannot get their candidates back on course, the possibility of consolidating their base and winning in November appears slim to none. GLENN HAYES, KEW GARDENS

RE: “PIERCING INFANTS AKIN TO CHILD ABUSE”: Isn’t it a tad bit
of a stretch to compare a pierced ear to child abuse? There are many baby boys circumcised in many cultures and religions in the States and across the world — is that abuse? People baptize their children, they aren’t given a choice to pick their religion, is that abuse as well? I would rather see a pierced ear than a child being subjected to secondhand smoke; to me that’s abuse. EKENG MANCZUK, NEW YORK
This is definitely not true at all. I got my ear pierced as an infant and so did my sister. To me this was not child abuse in any way, shape or form. Yes, adults should be able to

They also feel the pain for a very short while and then it heals with daily proper care and cleaning. Don’t get upset about an article advertising ear piercing safety dos for baby girls.

Knicks giving whole new meaning to going to the bench Second-half surge against Cavs keyed by reserves How does D’Antoni play everybody?

With about six minutes left in Wednesday’s win over Cleveland the five players on the floor were Baron Davis, Iman Shumpert, J.R. Smith, Jared Jeffries and, the star, Steve Novak. Just how the Knicks drew it up when they added Tyson Chandler to superstars Carmelo Anthony and Amar’e Stoudemire. When head coach Mike D’Antoni joined the Knicks he barely had five players who could start. Now, he has too many to get on the court in 48 minutes. “To be honest, the last couple of days in practice, that [second] group has just kicked our first group’s butt every day, so it wasn’t different,” D’Antoni said after the game. “They’ve been playing that way.” While the bench has been coming together over the past couple weeks, it’s hard to imagine D’Antoni foresaw them leading his squad to a victory while his superstars jumped off the bench, cackling at highlight-reel dunks from Shumpert and Smith and Novak almost singlehandedly pushing his team ahead with three crucial 3pointers. “In the second half, we all

went out and warmed up and we knew we had to get it going,” Novak said. “And we knew if defensively we got it going our offense would happen.” Novak ended up scoring 17 points on 6-for-9 shooting, in-
cluding 5-of-8 from behind the arc. The bench as a whole scored 50 points, while Davis flawlessly led the second unit with eight assists and zero turnovers. Knicks fans at Madison Square Garden actually were
disappointed when the reserves hit the bench for the final minutes, chanting for Novak — not Anthony or Stoudemire. MARK OSBORNE

When a team brings in a superstar like Carmelo Anthony you generally assume they will lead by example. But sometimes you need a vocal leader as well. Tyson Chandler has a ring, won last year with the Mavericks, and his teammates are clearly taking note of his experience. Chandler spoke to the team at halftime of Wednesday’s game, firing up the squad for an eventual 17-point comeback win. “I just let my teammates know that if we really want to be true contenders, on nights like this we’ve got to show it,” Chandler said about his halftime speech. “Nothing’s going to come easy.” “He’s a champion and he’s won a ring and that’s how you do it,” head coach Mike D’Antoni said. “He’s shown the way.” METRO

Knicks begin four-game road trip with rival Boston Teams tied in East standings Will Rondo be traded?
It’s not unusual for the Knicks to find themselves looking up at the Celtics in the Eastern Conference standings. The difference this weekend is that it’s just one spot, and technically, the teams are both three back of the Sixers in the Atlantic. Boston stands at 17-17, while the Knicks improved to 18-18 with their win over the Cavaliers. And after the Celtics get a New York appetizer by facing the Nets on Friday night, the two rivals will meet Sunday afternoon on national television. It marks not just a crucial head-to-head matchup, but the start of a six-game road trip while the Big East tournament takes over Madison Square Garden. “This road trip coming up is going to be tough,” point guard Jeremy Lin said at practice Thursday. “There’s going to be tough times, tough stretches. We need to contin-
Rondo could be trade bait It’s unlikely Celtics point guard Rajon Rondo won’t be on the team come Sunday, but the neverending trade rumors persist. ESPN has reported that Rondo is on the trading block, because they don’t believe they are title contenders. Coach Doc Rivers said Thursday that wasn’t the case. “I can say with almost 100 percent certainty he will be here with us when the season ends. I’m tired of this stuff. It’s not fair.” METRO ue to grow. It’s just finding a good balance.” As the Knicks surge thanks to their youth movement of
Lin, Iman Shumpert and Steve Novak, the Celtics continue to look older. Before winning their last two games against substandard teams — the Cavaliers and Bucks — they had lost five in a row and seven-ofeight. Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen aren’t getting any younger. Allen’s scoring is down almost two points per game from the past two seasons in Boston. The Celtics are in the position of clinging to their .500 record, debating whether to blow up their team, and the Knicks are at .500 on the way up. They meet in the middle on Sunday. “We need to continue to build [on our record],” Lin said Thursday. “We’re at .500 and hopefully we can get well over that.” MARK OSBORNE

Yanks to cut payroll
MIKE STOBE/GETTY IMAGES
Steinbrenner meets with media Thursday Surprises by saying he will slash payroll outright Young pitchers Banuelos, Betances can offset cuts You’ll have to excuse Yankees fans if their first reaction to hearing the team wants to cut payroll is dumbfounded surprise. But according to Yankees managing general partner Hal Steinbrenner the concept is real, especially with a luxury tax threshold of $189 million being put in place in two years. “The 189 [million dollars] in two years is definitely a goal of ours, Steinbrenner told reporters Thursday in Tampa. “We’re not too far off. We’re going to have a very similar payroll this year to last year, but I think we have a better team. Somewhat of an accomplishment I guess, on paper anyway. “We’ll see, but yes that 189 is a real number, and we’re go-
Santana throws Mets ace Johan Santana continues to make progress as he tries to return from the shoulder injury that cost him all of 2011. The two-time Cy Young winner faced batters for the ďŹ rst time during his rehab, pitching to Ike Davis and David Wright, among others. “It’s just another spring training,â€? Santana said after the throwing session. “That’s the way I’m approaching everything.â€?
ing to be shooting for it. Presently the threshold for the luxury tax is $178 million. That figure will increase to $189 million for 2014, 2015 and 2016. The Yankees have an estimated payroll of $210 million in 2012 — the fifth straight season it’s been more than $200 million and the sixth time it’s been over that mark. They haven’t been below $189 million since the 2004 team’s payroll was $184,193,950. This year, the Yankees will be taxed at a rate of 42 percent while next year that rate goes up to 50 percent. Last year, their tax bill was $13.9 million and in 2010 it was $18 million. If the $189 million payroll becomes the reality Steinbren-
ner is aiming for, their rate will reset to 17.5 percent according to the new collective bargaining agreement signed this offseason. “Luxury tax is an option, Steinbrenner said. “It’s a personal option. We go into it knowing exactly what we’re doing. Being the only team that does it, I’m just not convinced we need to be as high as we’ve been in the past to field a championship-caliber team. “I just feel that if you do well on the player development side and you have a good farm system, you don’t need a $220 million payroll.
