Mayor: Power company should pay for blackout Cash losses for small businesses, employees worry Menino NStar says it doesn’t pay for lost business A “somewhat frustrated” Mayor Thomas Menino said Thursday that he wants NStar to pay up for the Back Bay blackout, which for some power customers lasted nearly 48 hours. “The shareholders should pay for this, not the ratepayers,” Menino said while standing in Copley Square. “It’s a much bigger problem than we thought it would be.” Menino said he was concerned for the small businesses that lost products and the employees of those businesses who were losing out on pay. He said he wants NStar to help defray the city’s overtime costs as well as the losses suffered by the businesses. However, Menino might not get that help. A spokesman for NStar said reimbursement is not likely. “We don’t provide reimbursement for lost business due to power outages,” said

Sen. John Kerry on Thursday wrote a letter to the U.S. Small Business Administration and asked that it provide economic relief. More than 20,000 customers lost power after a

115,000-volt transformer caught fire Tuesday night. Since then, scores of NStar crews have worked to restore power to the Back Bay neighborhood. Nearly all of the power was restored Thursday afternoon with the exception of the Prudential Center. Making the restoration effort more difficult Thursday was the explosion of three manholes not far from the site of Tuesday’s fire. NStar officials said the cause of the fire was a failure in a connector that linked the underground high-voltage transmission system to the substation, according to the Globe. Menino said that once NStar finishes an analysis of what happened, he will appoint a panel to examine the report and incident. MICHAEL NAUGHTON

T worker to be disciplined following swearing rant There are many terms pinned on Massachusetts drivers for their unruly road habits and hot-head tempers behind the wheel. But MBTA officials said Thursday that’s no excuse for the excessive outburst and swearing that came from the mouth of a Silver Line bus driver after he was cut off by another motorist and caught losing his cool on video by a passenger.

From left, Tim Johnson, Keith Hartstein, Richard Fries, David Chiu and Sean Griffing get ready to bike from the Hub to Washington, D.C.

According to MBTA spokesman Joe Pesaturo, the driver “did not deny allegations” that he was behind the cussing tirade after the T conducted an initial investigation. The operator will be disciplined for his rant, according to reports. “The conduct of this particular operator was entirely inappropriate,” Pesaturo said. The MBTA sent Metro ad-

up on the National Bike Summit to lobby Congress for more bike share programs and funding in cities and towns across the nation. “The biggest goal of this whole ride is try and connect the work people are already doing for bikes,” said Johnson. “That freedom you had as a kid [riding a bike] shouldn’t be so hard to get.” The second annual “Ride on Washington” will last five days and attempt to raise $100,000 for the Bikes Belong Foundation, he said. The group, like last year, expects to pick up participants on its path. Supporters

are welcome to ride with them in spurts as they pedal to Washington. Local restaurateur and coowner of Trade, Sean Griffing, will strap on his helmet for part of the five-day journey with Johnson. “We need to create awareness not only for motorists, but cyclists as well — and make sure both parties are versed on how we share the road,” said Griffing. Obama hit by health insurance ‘T-word’

To be, or not to be, a tax? That is the question in this month’s U.S. Supreme Court case testing the validity of President Barack Obama’s controversial healthcare system overhaul. At issue is the money that Americans will have to pay starting in 2014 to the Internal Revenue Service if they fail to obtain medical insurance. During his 2008 campaign, Obama promised not to raise taxes on families earning less than $250,000. That’s the same income bracket where a lot of people lack health insurance. So, as president, Obama and

his aides studiously avoided using the “T-word” as they worked to persuade Congress to pass the healthcare overhaul. Instead, they called it a “penalty.” Now enacted, the law refers to a “penalty” that must be paid if a taxpayer fails to get coverage. Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius said at a recent congressional hearing that the payment “operates the same way a tax would operate, but it is not, per se, a tax.” Just last month, acting White House budget director Jeffrey Zients said in a hearing that it was not a tax. Karzai demands removal of US troops from villages

Read my lips.

KABUL. Afghanistan’s President Hamid Karzai called for NATO troops to leave Afghan villages and confine themselves to major bases after the slaughter of 16 civilians by a U.S. soldier, underscoring fury over the massacre and clouding U.S. exit plans. In a near-simultaneous announcement, the Afghan Taliban said it was suspending nas-

cent peace talks with the United States seen as a strong chance to end the country’s decade-long conflict, blaming “shaky, erratic and vague” U.S. statements. Karzai said as a consequence of the weekend massacre, “international security forces have to be taken out of Afghan village outposts and return to (larger) bases.” REUTERS

Ford Motor Co. has been sued for allegedly selling trucks over a 10-year period that had defective fuel tank linings and for hiding the problem from consumers even as it warned dealers. The lawsuit filed Wednesday in a New Jersey federal court said fuel tank linings on 10 E- and F-series truck models made between 1999 and 2008 would “separate and flake off.” It said this would clog fuel systems with debris and rust, causing a sudden loss of engine power and potentially causing vehicles to buck or kick or suddenly stall. Ford in 2007 issued a “secret” technical service bulletin to dealers advising of the problem, but neither recalled the affected trucks nor offered to repair them for free, the complaint said. Is GOP’s ‘war on women’ a Fluke? CHRISTOPHER GREGORY/GETTY IMAGES

“Consider this,” wrote former Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm Thursday in an Op-Ed called “Women are facing sexual McCarthyism”: “After the election of 2010 that saw Republicans gain control of state legislatures across the country, more than 1,100 anti-choice laws were introduced in 2011 — a new record. ... So far in 2012, an additional 430 were introduced. We may break the record.”

s the Republican party waging a “War on Women,” and if so, are they winning it? The answers to these questions depend on whether you perceive the nasty legislative battle over the Obama administration’s health care mandate as one over religious liberty or women’s reproductive health. Leading Republican presidential candidates Mitt Romney and Rick Santorum say the president is trampling religious freedom by forcing employers to comply with a national health care law requiring insurers to provide contraceptive services for women. A Bloomberg poll released Wednesday reports that 62 percent of respondents think otherwise. (The poll also indicated that Democrats aren’t actually benefiting from the debate.) So just what are Republican legislators doing? Following the failure to pass the controversial Blunt Amendment — which would have allowed employers to opt out of providing contraception coverage if it violated their beliefs, like, for instance, devout mysoginists — national lawmakers largely abandoned the issue, if not the rhetoric. But at least nine Republican-led states aren’t ready to move on, pro-

hat began with fallout over the Komen foundation’s now-rescinded decision to unfund Planned Parenthood and led to the Virginia invasive ultrasound bill (imposing barriers on a woman’s choice to abort) segued effortlessly into the character assassination of Sandra Fluke — which has now devolved into attacks over the student activist’s “rich socialist boyfriend” and a vacation that apparently included some alcohol consumption. Then on Thursday, the story grew to envelop a Senate fight over the Violence Against Women Act, which provides funding to investi-

gate domestic violence, passed with bipartisan consensus in 1994. Conservative activist Phyllis Schlafly says the law led to “divorce, breakup of marriage and hatred of men.” Republican Sen. Lisa Murkowski cautioned her party that it was “at risk of being successfully painted as anti-woman,” The New York Times reported.

I

t’s hard not to connect the dots. Republicans accuse Democrats of political point-scoring; Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell said Dems were “manufacturing fights” over the Women Act. (Murkowski disagreed. “This is too important an issue for women and men and families that we not address it,” she said.) McConnell’s argument isn’t, of course, unimaginable — U.S. politics seem to be a no-holds-barred arena. But why are Republican legislators playing into this narrative? Maybe it’s because, despite outrage, they think they’re the ones winning all the points. Ramesh Ponnuru of the National Review certainly thinks so: “The issue is likely to help Republicans in the fall, if they can keep their wits about them,” he writes. For the current field of Republican presidential candidates, that’s a very big “if.” Metro does not endorse the opinions of the author, or any opinions expressed on its pages.

Jimmy Cliff One of reggae’s founding fathers seemed to be challenging himself to tone down his set on Wednesday night. Accompanied by only an acoustic guitarist and a drummer, the singer wore a simple red shirt and backwards baseball cap, and for much of the set, strummed a right-handed acoustic guitar that looked enormous on him in the lefthanded position. Though the arrangement was basic, Cliff’s performance was anything but. The 63-year-old Jamaican’s high, elastic voice still sounds so sweet and strong. His set was filled with songs that spanned his career and almost served as a testament that his catalog should be required listening for any self-respecting songwriter. When he belted out “Many Rivers to Cross,” it was a true moment of transcendence; when he updated his anti-war song, “Vietnam,” by changing

The only complaint with this set was that he finished on a song called “One More,” where he engaged the audience in a frenzied call-and-response that continued after he left the stage. With a title like “One More” and that kind of reaction from the crowd, one would think it was an obvious reason to come back for an encore. But no such luck.

Cotton Jones Mostly centered around the warm voice of singer Michael Nau, Cotton Jones is a six-piece from Maryland. From the stage of a bar called Swan Dive, Nau announced at one point that the band had a few more songs left. But after turning in a performance of “Somehow to Keep It Going” from the band’s 2010

Fiona Apple Kicking off NPR’s showcase, Fiona Apple made it easy to forget this was the same musician who had an infamous onstage meltdown in 2005. Vacillating between a low croon and a hoarse primal scream, she spent most of the set hunched forward with her arms at her side, as if she were possessed by her songs. Her band expertly executed the loud-to-soft and

soft-to-loud dynamic shifts that Apple’s songs demand. There were even a few times when the band wandered into jam-band territory. But where that can sometimes feel frivolous, when anchored by a truly commanding singer like Apple, it works. She ended the set with a seething rendition of her 1996 breakout hit, “Criminal.” If Apple truly did “need to be redeemed,” she certainly was on this night. album, “Tall Hours in the Glowstream,” he must have realized that it wouldn’t be possible to top it, so he said, “I guess that was our last song.” Instead of feeling like a bow of defeat or an excuse of time constraints, it felt like an acknowledgment that magic had happened in the way the sing-along chorus of “Come on, baby let the river roll” resounded.

In a disarmingly funny and candid keynote address on Thursday, Bruce Springsteen talked about the state of modern music and shared a heartfelt history of his own journey. For more than an hour, he detailed personal politics, imparted words of wisdom for young musicians, discussed a host of artists across all genres that he felt indebted to (from the Sex Pistols to Elvis) and even revealed that he still plays guitar in the mirror. “Don’t you?” he asked the amused crowd of 3,000. “C’mon! Humbling feelings

Alt-country all-stars team up for ‘New Multitudes,’ a new imagining of unpublished Woody Guthrie songs to pay tribute to the legend

W

oody Guthrie wasn’t just the voice of a generation — he was the voice of several generations. Known reverently as America’s premier folk singer, he was the voice of the people, the voice of protest and a voice of peace. He not only wrote classic original songs like “This Land Is Your Land,” but also kept traditional tunes alive and relevant in our nation’s historical repertoire. It is within this history of retelling the tales of others that the recent “New Multitudes”

record came to be. Paying homage to Woody, with his centennial birthday approaching, four of America’s most earnest troubadours united to honor him by recording an album of his previously unreleased songs and taking those tunes on the road for a brief American tour. First conceived by Jay Farrar (Uncle Tupelo, Son Volt, Gob Iron) back in 1995 as a potential collaboration between he and Billy Bragg, the idea fell through and his old Tupelo bandmate Jeff Tweedy pursued the project with Bragg instead.

From left, Johnson, Farrar, James (or Yames, if you will) and Parker recorded “New Multitudes,” the unpublished songs of Woody Guthrie.

If you go Jay Farrar, Will Johnson, Anders Parker and Yim Yames Friday, 8 p.m. The Paradise 967 Comm. Ave., Boston $23, 800-745-3000 www.livenation.com

“I don’t know what happened,” says Farrar of the Wilco frontman. “But frankly I don’t really care, which is important.” A decade later, Farrar, together with Anders Parker (also of Gob Iron), received the blessing of Woody’s daughter, Nora, to browse the Guthrie archives and record more unreleased material. Farrar says the archives occupied just a few

rooms, but they were filled with material. “It was essentially a repository of all things Woody,” he says. Farrar says Guthrie’s importance can’t be overstated: “You can draw a flowchart with people that Woody Guthrie influenced along the way,” he says. “Woody was the first guy who could change the world through music.”

After recording tracks with Parker, Farrar expanded the band with My Morning Jacket’s Jim James (who for this project goes by Yim Yames) and Will Johnson (Centro-Matic, South San Gabriel). “This is one of the most humbling feelings I’ve ever experienced,” says Johnson. “It is truly one of the highest honors. ... Woody Guthrie was always important to me as a kid, thanks to my folks and my grandparents and adults around me. By 1997, I really started exploring deeper into how complex and encompassing he was on all life levels. I always kind of thought that Woody was one of the original punk rockers. ... SLY AND BIG HEARTED,

In lesser hands, “Time Stands Still” could easily land in the ever-growing abyss of forgettable relationship plays featuring four New Yorkers of varying degrees of likeability navigating their narcissistic ways through life’s ups and downs. Fortunately, Lyric Stage Company had the good sense to enlist the directorial vision of Scott Edmiston, who circumvents most of the story’s cliches and predictability to deliver an impressive production of a rather mediocre play. Every facet of this flawlessly executed piece, from Janie Howland’s stellar set to the superb performances of a talented ensemble, collaborates to create an incredibly authentic feeling. There are many times you’ll swear you’re sitting in a cluttered artist’s loft in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, watching worlds collide, relationships implode and life — despite their best efforts to capture it all in still frames — move forward. Erica Spyres shines as Mandy, the youngest member of the group and the only one who hasn’t been beaten down by life as a journalist. into warm, likable optimist. Though Laura Latreille’s Sarah is significantly more complex, her delivery is loud, angry and aggressive. Latreille teeters masterfully near the edge of over-the-top while nicely revealing a hint of humanity just below the surface of Sarah’s bitterness and isolation. Barlow Adamson is perfect as Sarah’s defeated, post-breakdown significant other James. He nicely captures both the exhausting essence of trying to make this relationship work and the light and relief of his final resignation. Jeremiah Kissel makes it look easy as a middle-aged man with a hot, young girlfriend. But it’s his subtle metamorphosis into loving, doting husband that will most impress you. NICK DUSSAULT

Most incredible nature scenes filmed for ‘Frozen Planet’

Elizabeth White, one of the directors behind the new series documenting life at the polar regions, shares her ‘holy grail’ moments caught while cameras were rolling

“We had tantalizing reports of this behavior from observers on cruise ships, the diaries of the early explorers and also a shaky tourist video,” says White, whose crew went to the Antarctic to capture its own footage of this phenomenon, said to be the most complex team hunt in the whole of the animal kingdom. “Among large ice floes peppered with sunbathing seals, the crew saw some tall dorsal fins and killer whales coming vertically out of the water to have a look around. Remarkably, right in front their eyes, a pod of killer whales prospected an ice floe, turned and generated a wave which washed over a nearby floe. What they revealed to the scientists was a number of things — that killer whales have a real preference for

Weddell seals, not crabeaters (as had previously been proposed), that they use different techniques to break up floes of different sizes and that different pods behave differently — some are bold and fearless and others more cautious.”

2

Footage of the brinicle, an underwater ice stalactite that plunges toward the seabed and kills everything it touches

“This was an unexpected discovery for the ‘Frozen Planet’ team,” admits White. “Relatively few people have dived in Antarctica, and there is still much to learn about the marine life there. [The crew was] aware of these bizarre ice chandeliers — brine icicles — hanging from the sea ice above, but it was only when filming something else that they accidently witnessed one forming. This was an amazing opportunity to use time-lapse techniques to really show what

happens when these bizarre formations grow. This phenomenon had never been filmed before.”

3

Aerial footage of Antarctica — including the first aerials of the South Pole base — retracing the steps of early explorers Robert F. Scott and Roald Amundsen

“We were aware that ‘Frozen Planet’ would be airing exactly 100 years after the tragic story of Scott and his team, as they battled to be the first men to stand at the geographical South Pole. Retracing their epic journey — across the transAntarctic mountains, mighty Beardmore Glacier and up onto the vast polar plateau — felt a very symbolic journey to make, even if done using helicopters and planes, rather than by foot.” AMBER RAY

Metro’s Dorothy Robinson shares her take on the world of gossip

@dorothyatmetro

dorothy.robinson@metro.us

Jermaine Jones: ‘You’re fired!’ Here’s the thing: You can get away with a few little white lies on your résumé if you’re applying to, say, a remote Applebee’s in some God-forsaken strip mall off the interstate. But when you are auditioning for one of the most powerful brands in the entire universe, a brand that has billions of dollars at their disposal to make sure nothing happens to tarnish their reputation, you should probably be up front with anything that might bite you on the butt later. It seems “American Idol” contestant Jermaine Jones didn’t get this memo. The top 12 finalist was disqualified from the show after the pow-

ers-that-be learned he’d kept his criminal background under wraps, having four outstanding arrest warrants in his home state of New Jersey and a history of using multiple fake names with cops. And so executive producers Nigel Lythgoe and Ken Warwick fired him on national TV Wednesday night, Donald Trumpstyle. However, the drama leading up to the evening (blogs have been buzzing with the Jones news since The Smoking Gun uncovered his unsavory past) did nothing to boost the show’s ratings. In fact, viewership was down 5 percent from last week.

Jermaine Jones, dubbed “The Gentle Giant” by host Ryan Seacrest, is maybe not so gentle.

“With the cooperation of law enforcement, we discovered information that left us with no choice but to eliminate one of our own from the competition. When you’re doing a live show, anything can happen.” RYAN SEACREST, ON THE FIRING OF CONTESTANT JERMAINE JONES

telling friends that they’re ready to start a family, according to Life & Style Weekly. And if that isn’t enough to stoke pregnancy rumors, Aniston was reportedly eschewing booze during some Academy Awards festivities. “I saw Jen Oscar week, and she couldn’t stop smiling,” a source says. “She was actually less lean and less muscular than I had expected her to be — her body looked softer. In the dress she wore, it really did look like she had a baby bump.”

Mendes steps up her Gosling girlfriend game Eva Mendes has reportedly

been looking for a way to prove to Ryan Gosling that she’s serious about their relationship — and she may have found it. Mendes is taking care of Gosling’s dog, George, while the actor is filming in Thailand, according to Us Weekly. “He was going to have his friends watch George, but changed his mind at the last minute,” a source informs. “That’s a huge deal to him. He wouldn’t leave that dog with just anyone.”

New Orleans police have issued a warrant for Russell Brand in connection with an incident during which Brand reportedly hurled a paparazzo’s iPhone into an office window, according to TMZ. The warrant is for simple criminal damage to property, a misdemeanor. The website previously reported that immediately following the incident on Monday, reps for Brand contacted the law office involved and said Brand would pay for the damage to the window. And while Brand has made no official comment on the incident, he did make light of it on Twitter, posting, “Since Steve Jobs died I cannot bear to see anyone use an iphone irreverently, what I did was a tribute to his memory.”

Hamm: ‘Mad’ porn? Jon Hamm more than paid his

dues before finding success with “Mad Men,” but exactly how bad did things get? “I did set dressing on some soft-core porn films,” Hamm tells Playboy. “That was hands-down the worst. I was working on the crew from 7 to 7, and it was horribly depressing.” Hamm, who had many day jobs before his acting career took off, freely admits that the adult film work was by far the worst. “It’s definitely on the lower end of the spectrum of the wonder of moviemaking. It wasn’t even that much money,” he says.

Continuing a St. Paddy’s tradition

Where to celebrate Lansdowne Pub’s Third Annual St. Patrick’s Day Celebration

10 a.m. to 1 a.m. Lansdowne Pub 9 Lansdowne St., Boston Free before 8 p.m., 21+, 617-247-1222 www.lansdownepub boston.com The Lansdowne strives for authenticity for its all-day St. Paddy’s party. You won’t find any of that corny stuff like green beer here (though you will find corned beef). But we really love the names of the bands they’ve got lined up: Ivy Leaf, Dublin Free Press, the Great Whisky Rebellion and Bearfight.

For Dropkick Murphys, Boston is the only place for a March residency But if you don’t have a ticket to the show, you can still enjoy their new live album at home Ken Casey talks green beer and parades If there’s one place the Dropkick Murphys have to be around St. Patrick’s Day, it’s Boston. The band’s traditional hometown shows in March fit in with a larger touring agenda, but that’s all just a warm-up. “People come from all over the world,” says Dropkicks founder and co-singer Ken Casey. “They go to the parade, go to a Bruins game and go to our show. It’s turned into a Dropkick Murphys convention.” That would be the famous St. Pat’s Southie parade that Casey’s referencing. The Dropkicks have put the punk into St. Paddy’s for so long that Casey doesn’t know what he’d do if he weren’t playing that day.

“I’ve got young kids, so I’m sure they’d want to go to the parade. I certainly don’t go out and drink green beer. I don’t know if I’ve ever even seen it. I don’t know if it’s even true. I don’t know why anyone would want to even drink green beer. It must look pretty.” Perhaps green beer is not some latter-day fictitious tradition, though. In one “Boardwalk Empire” episode, bootlegged beer is colored green for St. Pat’s. “‘Boardwalk Empire’ gets their facts right,” says Casey. “So they must have been doing it back then.” LINDA LABAN

Dropkick Murphys play House of Blues Friday, then two shows at Tsongas Arena in Lowell on Saturday and Brighton Music Hall on Sunday. For more info visit www.livenation.com.

Knocking it out of the Park A special “Fenway Park Bonus Edition” of the Dropkick Murphys’ 2011 album “Going Out in Style” — including a live bonus disc and a downloadable concert film of the two sold-out Fenway Park shows — is out this month, commemorating what Casey calls “ a career

pinnacle.” Playing Fenway Park put the Dropkick Murphys alongside rock’s biggest names. “I was kept humble, though,” says Casey. “When I walked out to get my car in the players’ parking lot, it was stolen. I can say I had an experience that McCartney, Tyler and Springsteen never did. Of course, they arrived in a limo, and I drove my Chevy.”

There will also be a raffle with rugby-related prizes.

Draft beers are a measly $2 at every stop, which should easily make up for the registration fee. It starts at the Hard Rock, stopping at Battery Park, Side Bar and Grille, the Place, Kitty O’Shea’s and Clarke’s.

are you aware that the president is only 50 percent black? How does the hatred of Obama go back to color? It was uneducated voters like yourself, who based there vote on color, that provided us this idiot. The race card should now be pointed at you. MARK CARRIERI, VIA E-MAIL I think it’s simultaneously humorous and sad that so many Obama supporters think his detractors dislike him because he’s (half) black. The government cannot, for example, pass a law ordering a Jewish orthodox hospital to serve pork chops in its cafeteria because some of the patients think they have a right to eat pork. Some individuals try to link it to Viagra or hormone-replacement therapy to justify their position, but these medicines restore what once occurred naturally. Vanderbilt too much for Harvard The NCAA tournament ends well for just one of 68 teams. Harvard’s dream of an NCAA tournament win after making the Big Dance for the

first time since 1946 came to an abrupt end Thursday as fifth-seeded Vanderbilt earned a 79-70 victory in Albuquerque. Harvard pulled to within

five with under two minutes to play. Vanderbilt owned a 33-23 lead over the Crimson at the half.

John Jenkins had 27 for Vandy while Brad Tinsley added 16. Laurent Rivard led the Crimson with 20. METRO

Playing hooky on Day 2 One of the more annoying aspects of March Madness is when your officemates and friends brag after the first day of the tournament that they got 13 of the first 16 games right. “Yeah, seriously, I’m 13-3 so far!!!!”

Big deal. My dog can get the bulk of the opening day picks right once I explain to him the seeding system. That means everyone is still alive in their bracket once Friday rolls around, and that means everyone has a sincere interest in the second full day of action.

MIDWEST: No. 11 NC State vs. No. 6 SDSU Breakdown: Every year a team that nobody felt deserved to be in the dance makes everyone shut their pie hole by going on a nice little run. N.C. State may be that team this year. All five

Wolfpack starters average in double figures and they pound the glass, a difficult formula for an overachieving Aztecs squad. On TV: 12:40 p.m., truTV

MIDWEST: No. 15 Detroit vs. No. 2 Kansas GETTY IMAGES

Breakdown: So what if 15

seeds are 4-100 in firstround games in the tournament? They have to win from time to time and, frankly, all we’re looking for is a scare. Detroit has the capability to provide one. Ray McCallum Jr., the coach’s son, averaged 23.0 points during the team’s run to the Horizon League championship. The Horizon has produced at least one win in the tournament

EAST: No. 14 St. Bonaventure vs. No. 3 FSU GETTY IMAGES

Breakdown: This matchup features a pair of teams that finished third in their respective leagues during the regular season before rolling to a conference tournament crown, with the Bonnies knocking off Xavier and the Seminoles taking care of Duke and North Carolina. St. Bonaventure is making its first tournament appearance since 2000, returning to the big stage after years of turmoil and scandal. Leonard Hamilton took a 10-seeded FSU team to the Sweet 16 last season. There’s a chance for both teams to do accomplish something historic.

Breakdown: The Musketeers have their usual collection of undaunted gamers, led by Tu Holloway, and the Irish have their usual collection of longrange gunners, including Arlington’s own Pat Connaughton, and another quality big man in Jack Cooley. Connaughton, a freshman small forward for the Irish, starred at St. John’s Prep (Danvers) in high school. Xavier reached the Elite Eight in 2008 and the Sweet 16 in both 2009 and 2010. Trade Dud-line The Celtics could soon be targeting New Orleans center Chris Kaman if the Hornets big man is bought out of his contract. The Celtics were silent at the NBA trade deadline Thursday.
