Salem mom: ‘I did what I had to do to protect’ kids Mother held without bail for allegedly trying to kill her two children Cops: Mom says ‘I’m sorry’ Expert says filicide can be ‘out of love’ A Salem mother accused of trying to kill her two children by slitting their throats and lighting her apartment on fire told police she was trying “to protect” her son and daughter. Tanicia Goodwin, 25, was arraigned in Salem District Court yesterday. Her two children, an 8-year-old boy and a 3-year-old girl, were in critical condition at Children’s Hospital Boston, authorities said. According to police reports, emergency personnel were called to the Salem Heights apartment complex Sunday night for a report of a fire. Goodwin’s children were found inside with “deep lacerations [on their necks] from one side to the other,” said Essex County Assistant District Attorney Melissa Woodard. A paramedic who responded to the scene said Goodwin’s son nodded his head when

asked if it was his mother who hurt him. Shortly after allegedly lighting the fire Sunday, Goodwin arrived at police headquarters, where she collapsed inside the foyer, covered in blood and lighter fluid, and smashed a glass display case, according to reports. Goodwin also had a “superficial wound” on her neck, said prosecutors.

“They had to wipe down lighter fluid from the children’s bodies before they could do surgery on them.” MELISSA WOODARD, ESSEX COUNTY ASSISTANT DISTRICT ATTORNEY

said the Salem incident sounds like it could be “altruistic.” According to Dr. Phillip Resnick, professor of psychiatry at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, filicide has five categories. Altruistic cases have two subcategories, he said. “One is when a mother intends to take her own life

“She stated [to police] ‘I’m not supposed to be here, I’m not supposed to be alive,’” Woodard told the judge. During an interview with police, Goodwin repeatedly told officers she did what she had to do “to protect” her children and apologized, according to court documents. STEVE ANNEAR

and doesn’t want to leave her children motherless,” he said. “The second is where a mother believes she is protecting a child from a worse fate than death.” “By saying she is saving them, she is in a category of saving their souls,” Resnick said. “It’s murder out of love, rather than murder out of hate.” METRO/SA

The evidence According to prosecutors, several items were found during the investigation: Goodwin dismantled smoke detectors and blocked sprinklers inside the apartment. The doorknob from the front entrance was taken off from the inside. Officials discovered lighter fluid, a large kitchen knife and matches inside the apartment.

Mother arraigned Goodwin was arraigned on two counts of armed assault with intent to murder, assault and battery with a deadly weapon and arson to a dwelling. She was held without bail pending a dangerousness hearing next week. METRO/SA

A tragic and freak car crash that occurred in Florida has reverberated in Massachusetts and left communities just outside of Boston in anguish. Alanna DeMella, 26, of Medford, was seven months pregnant when a car crashed into the Florida resort where she was staying and killed her and her unborn baby. DeMella was a teacher’s aide at the Pierce Elementary School in Arlington, where grief counselors spent yesterday talking to the school’s students. “We extend our heartfelt sympathy to the DeMella family,” principal Karen Hartley said in a statement posted on the school’s website. Her husband was taken to a medical center for minor injuries. Kim suffered injuries that were not life-threatening and is in a hospital in stable condition. She has not yet been charged with a crime. Fort Lauderdale Police Detective Travis Mandell would not say yesterday whether speed, alcohol or drugs were preliminary factors in the crash. “With all traffic homicides, there’s a lot of science that goes into it. Southie parade revelers in court Eleven people who thought they would be in South Boston Sunday for a good time during the St. Patrick’s Day parade had to return to the neighborhood for a not-so-good time. People who were arrested for various crimes during the parade Sunday were arraigned in South Boston District Court yesterday. Six of the 11 people in court agreed to pay $200 in court costs and perform up to 24 hours of community service to have their municipal ordinance crimes, such as public drinking or disorderly conduct, dismissed. However, five other people went forth with their cases. Here is a sampling of how some of those people ended up being arrested Sunday: A 41-year-old Stoneham man was seen drinking from

When police told Kevin McBride to empty out the bottle, he chugged it instead, police said, and then refused to give them his identification for a citation. Officers then arrested McBride, who began chanting “Attica! Attica!” as he was led away, authorities said. He was later released on his own recognizance. Officers along the parade

route responded to a person who was bleeding from the head and said he had been in a fight during which another man smashed a bottle on him. Officers were able to locate the alleged assaulter, Brendan Pembroke, 23, of Boston. Pembroke allegedly told officers he didn’t hit the man with a bottle, but instead his fist, according to prosecutors. Pembroke was ordered held on $1,000 bail. Instead of returning to the sidewalk from the street where the parade was traveling, Joseph Morris, 20, of Billerica, allegedly chestbumped an officer and told them to “shut up,” police said.He was released on his own recognizance. If Mitt Romney seals up the GOP presidential nomination before the August convention — an eventuality looking more eventual with each passing day — Rick Santorum may have only his own campaign to blame. This is because of a backroom deal struck by the two campaigns over a pair of organizational difficulties each faced in Illinois. For Romney, the problem was a failure to acquire the necessary signatures to qualify for delegates. Santorum stared down a similar problem, lagging in petitions for 10 congressional districts. The Romney camp challenged Santorum’s petitions,

and Santorum challenged back. Then both candidates decided to rescind their challenges, allowing Romney onto Illinois ballots and allowing Santorum to collect delegates in (all but four of ) Illinois’ 18 congressional districts. These sorts of thing should never happen, especially in well-organized campaigns like Romney’s. But happen they did, and the Santorum camp — at that point not yet running as the clear Romney alternative — missed an opportunity to keep Mitt away from the state’s 69 delegates. (As it stands, Santorum has forfeited 10 of these.) So now it’s on to Illinois today, where polls put Romney at a commanding lead. This is bad news for Santorum, who must win nearly 65 percent of all re-

maining delegates to prevent the impending Rom-ination. And it’s even worse than that: As David Corn points out, Romney’s real magic number isn’t 1,144 as most report, but 1,104; that’s because Utah, the last state to hold a primary, on June 26, awards its delegates on a winner-take-all basis to any candidate that wins a plurality of votes. Romney, who won all the state’s delegates in 2008, is a heavy favorite to do so again, considering the Beehive State's big Mormon voting bloc. Santorum needs to stop Romney from reaching 1,104 delegates. Yet he traded a chance at doing so for a shot at some of his own, from which he won’t even benefit greatly.

Romney is headed for Illinois win, say polls Mitt Romney may be headed for an important victory in Illinois today that would help him put more distance between himself and Rick Santorum, his chief rival for the Republican presidential nomination. A new poll by Public Policy Polling said Romney leads the conservative Santorum by 45 percent to 30 percent in Illinois. Former U.S. House of Representatives Speaker Newt Gingrich had 12 percent and

Windfall for investors as Apple pays dividend

GETTY IMAGES

Apple Inc. CEO Tim Cook, moving swiftly after taking over from the late Silicon Valley icon Steve Jobs, fulfilled a longstanding desire of investors by initiating a quarterly dividend and share buyback that will pay out $45 billion over three years. The world’s most valuable company will start paying its first dividends since 1995 — a regular quarterly payout of $2.65 a share — in July, and buy back up to $10 billion of its stock beginning in the next fiscal year. The $10 billion annual dividend program, which Cook said will be reviewed periodically, ranks among the largest current U.S. corporate cash payouts. Yet it disappointed

some fund managers, given the immense war chest Apple boasts, and a 1.8 percent dividend yield that lags the Standard & Poor’s 500 average. Cook told analysts yesterday that “making great products” remained top priority. Jobs’ former lieutenant has impressed Wall Street since taking the helm. He made his mark revealing Apple’s production partners and initiating investigations into allegations of labor abuse in its supply chain, and addressing investors directly at this year’s Goldman Sachs conference. But the question of whether the operations maven can envision revolutionary products still lingers for some.

HOW IMPORTANT WAS HE? Advice

ADAM HANFT

BRANDING STRATEGIST

Steve Jobs’ last words, famously, were “Oh wow. Oh wow. Oh wow.” Since his death, the most important businessman in the world suddenly looks less so. While Jobs’ death triggered agonized predictions about the prospects for Apple, it seems they could be overblown.

A

fter all, its stock price is soaring. The “New iPad” has provoked the same frenzied lines and consumer demand we’ve come to expect. (True, this is a product that had Jobsian fingerprints all over it.) The rumors about a breakthrough television are flying. And the company is sitting on a billion dollars in cash. So was the irreplaceable stature of the legendary CEO exaggerated? I don’t think so. Even if it appears that Apple didn’t skip a beat, it would be a rush to judgment to conclude that everything will continue to be copacetic in Cupertino. Here are the worms in the Apple that may present themselves: Post-dictator tribalism: For all his genius, Jobs ran the company with an oligarch’s heavy hand. But as the mourning dissipates, the natural fractiousness of organizations will eventually appear — and it’s unlikely that Tim Cook will be able to keep his band of

talented, strong-willed individuals from internal strife. The public can’t love you forever: In Wall Street, they say trees don’t grow to the sky. Neither does loyalty. Apple’s remarkable run will eventually be threatened by a perfect storm of the working conditions at Quoted Foxconn and its other factories, and “Jobs’ death its zealously guardtriggered ed walled garden that’s beautiful but agonized imprisoning for predictions users. There are about Apple.” other huge issues. The need for Apple HANFT TV to succeed; even a slight hiccup will bring back the “There’s no real Apple without Steve” naysayers. And in the future, the need for paradigm innovation like the iPod, iPhone and iPad — as opposed to incremental innovation, which is all we’ve seen thus far. So my answer to the question about Steve Jobs’ criticality is exactly the same as the answer the Chinese communist leader Zhou Enlai gave when asked about his reaction to the French Revolution: “Too soon to tell.” Metro does not endorse the opinions of the author, or any opinions expressed on its pages.

Books: Interview

Lauren Groff visits Brookline Booksmith on March 22, where she will be joined by Meghan Mayhew Bergman.

It’s trouble in paradise in Groff’s latest Though Lauren Groff’s captivating new novel, “Arcadia,” is set in an imploding commune in upstate New York during the 1970s, the work feels modern and relevant. “This book was a direct over-reaction to the passivity and cynicism I felt in the world when I began it four years ago,” she says. Groff answered a few questions for us about the beauty of upstate New York, the impact of motherhood on her writing and the

idealism of the ’60s. This book is set initially from the perspective of Bit, a young member of the commune. You have two young boys yourself. How much has motherhood impacted your writing? Fiction is the province of empathy. Anything that expands your empathy and makes you feel more for other people will make you a stronger writer of fiction. I have two boys and, with the arrival of each, it felt as if I’d grown an extra heart. There’s that much more potential for pain, but I felt three times stronger about everything than I did before. The main character of Bit is directly derived from my big boy, Beckett, with whom I was pregnant when I tried to glom onto the idea of hope and idealism. You started writing this long before the emergence of Occupy Wall Street. Do you feel like there’s a kinship between the idealism of the ’60s and ’70s and this current movement? I hope so. … I want so badly for the Occupy movement to make huge sweeping changes, though the ones that it will probably make will be more subtle if just as far-reaching. I feel a bit external to both historical eras — I wasn’t born in the ’60s, and I was crazed with this book and my babies while writing and wasn’t as involved in Occupy as I might have wanted to be — and that puts me in the category of avid watcher of both eras. The decorated waist

Dark and moody colors

Inhale and hold. The waist was a major focal point for the fall shows. Burberry Prorsum highlighted it with little bows, Etro played it up with horsey harnesses and peplums, while Fendi and Acne cinched it with wide, sculpting belts. This is probably the easiest idea to adopt now. Simply grab a ribbon and tie it around any one of spring’s trendy, ladylike dresses.

Burgundy, oxblood and purple were the colors of the season in New York and London, showing up everywhere from Diane von Furstenberg to Jason Wu to Christopher Kane. And black dominated Milan and Paris — just look at Gucci, Alberta Ferretti, Roberto Cavalli, Givenchy and Yves Saint Laurent for proof. You get extra points if you go dark from head to toe a la Rooney Mara, the most referenced girl of Fashion Week.

Despite all the nipped and cinched waists we’ve seen all month, there was also an overall no-squeezingrequired ease to a lot of the clothes designers showed for fall. BaRodarte sically, you don’t have to have the perfect body to pull them off. Think relaxed and slouchy trousers (as seen at Balenciaga, Dries van Noten and Proenza Schouler, to name a few) and skirts that are forgivingly full and knee-length (Marc Jacobs, Rodarte and Rochas are good examples).

Look-at-me outerwear

Alexander Wang

Technically, every autumn/ winter show is an outerwear show. Coats and jackets are items that women rarely skimp on, so designers like to give plenty to choose from here. That said, the outerwear reached new heights when it comes to fabric innovation and embellishment — that’s a good thing when you consider that the winter coat is the only thing a person really sees on the street in winter. Our votes for season’s best goes to Prada (decorative and ornamental), Alexander Wang (slick, sleek and urban) and Jil Sander (soft, chic and romantic).

Don’t call it a remake

‘I don’t want that to be something I’m known for,’ Oscar-nominated Jonah Hill says of reviving beloved television series ‘21 Jump Street’ Though he’s made something new with his upcoming buddy comedy, he’ll leave it to someone else to redo ‘Small Wonder’ “I’m just proud to be up here, dressed as a moron,” Jonah Hill says while sitting on a stage at the Crosby Hotel in New York, in a snug-fitting bike patrol police uniform. “We’re not scared of showing [the movie] and that’s the best feeling. Sometimes you make a movie and it sucks and you don’t want to show it to people. We’re putting it out there because we’re like, ‘this thing is great.’” Twenty-eight-year-old Hill is discussing his remake of the 1980s undercover cop show “21 Jump Street,” which, in its 2012 incarnation, is more “‘Bad Boys’ meets John Hughes,” according to Hill. As a producer, writer and star of the film, Hill spent the last five years working on getting his film to the screen. Absolutely none of his ambition to get it done was based on his love of the original show. “They came to me first with a dramatic script and I was really against it,” Hill explains. “I

“Sometimes you make a movie and it sucks and you don’t want to show it to people. We’re putting it out there because we’re like, ‘this thing is great.’” JONAH HILL didn’t want to make a TV show into a movie. As a joke in the movie says, it’s really lazy and stupid and eye-rolling and unoriginal, all of those things. But there’s a ‘Back to the Future’ element that everyone involved with the movie understood and connected with — reliving your high school years, what is funny about that, what is sad about that. That to me is a really strong idea for a movie. So if it was called ‘21 Jump Street’ or it was called ‘Narcs’ or it was called ‘Two Cops Go Back to High School,’ I didn’t really give a s—. Honestly, that idea was

what captivated me.” So the cop thing also wasn’t what drew Hill to the idea of playing a policeman forced to investigate a high school drug ring by posing as a student. That much is apparent when Hill discusses handling real firearms on the set. “I had a problem because there was a guy whose job it was to give you a gun, and it’s a real gun and it’s loaded with blanks. So my thought was, it better not be loaded because I don’t want to die, I don’t any of my actors or anyone on the set to die, and you’re the guy whose job it is to make sure that no one dies,” Hill explains. “That’s a very serious job. So every time he gave me a gun, I pointed it at his genitalia and I pulled the trigger. I was like, ‘You’re never going to hand me a loaded gun because you don’t want to not be able to have kids ever again.’ So the gun was never loaded, was never loaded once.’

People fear Bible because it’s true! RE: “LET’S BE FAIR TO ALL OF WORLD’S RELIGIONS”: Wow, two

letters in three days from noted biblical scholar JD Lucas. To paraphrase the great C.S Lewis, if you can’t understand a book written for grown-ups, you shouldn’t talk about it. And to Mr. Ahern: I think the reason people predominantly attack the Bible is because people are afraid it’s true. Better (and easier) to attack it than to be confronted by it. I should know, I did the same thing once. RICK VOGENITZ, VIA E-MAIL

Race only matters because we think so RE: “SO YOU THINK RACE DOESN’T MATTER?”: Race does matter.

Although it only matters because we’re taught that it

does. We’re groomed to associate certain things with certain races. We teach our kids, friends and family that race matters. Even though it’s one of the most difficult topics to comprehend we try so hard to understand it. So for things like that, that’s why race matters. Only because we make it matter. AARON JASPER, VIA E-MAIL Every time there is fair criticism of Obama, the left screams “racist right.” These statements make the false assumption that (1) every one of Obama’s critics is white and (2) every critique of Obama must be racially driven. Well guess what, liberals. Just like the prominent civil rights activist Cornell West, I am part of a large, educated black community that does not support Obama. Are we racist, too? “I am not sure that voting third-party is the solution.” RE: “WHY VOTING THIRD PARTY ISN’T A WASTE”: Brayden

Simms’ insightful article effectively shows the inherent flaws in our two-party system. However, I am not sure that voting third-party is the solution, particularly since most American third parties tend to be at the extremes of the political spectrum. What we need is a centrist third party or independent candidate.

President Obama is a radical liberal thug Of course radical liberals hiding in the Democratic ranks will fire up those who won’t read the facts. The “followers” who’ll believe cheap talk, like the 12 million who believed that “work would set them free.” The JFK Dems who wanted to serve their country and not wait for a handout are gone. Obama is on record as stating that he will not enforce federal law, saying he’ll enact laws by “Presidential decree” and “regulation”. He refuses to respect the Christian faith while embracing our enemies’ “faith.” Obama is not a president; he’s still an “organizer.” He is a divider. Can we really trust this Chicago thug anymore?

Simms gets fooled by Ezra Klein’s Karl Rove quotes. He repeats the false dichotomy that “both parties are guilty of this practice.” Democrats were against the Mars mission and privatizing Social

New England’s Best Kept Secret The rising cost of college tuition has been a concern in the United States for some time now. Top that with the current economic situation, the old adage of “saving for my college tuition” for most has become a dream. A comparison of inflation statistics from the Bureau of Labor Statistics and the College Board reveals that since 1978, the cost of attendance at community colleges and 4-year public and private colleges and universities has tripled, with tuition increases rising at an average of double the general inflation rate.

In today’s competitive business world, a college degree is extremely important, now more than ever. So what’s the answer? Should you just accept the fact that you will need to go into debt, with thousands if not hundreds of thousands of dollars in student loans? Not so Fast! New England College of Business and Finance (NECB) offers affordable online degree programs which have evolved over 100 years of educating successful business professionals - without breaking the bank. In fact, the reason NECB had been

a secret is that it had historically been the preferred college by the banking and financial services industry which relied on the College to educate its workforce from tellers to senior management and which almost exclusively made up its student body. A few years ago the College decided to broaden its focus to the larger business community with excellent new programs, including the nation’s first and only Master of Science in Business Ethics and Compliance. But, NECB never lost its commitment to providing affordable education

and, in fact, in 2011 the U.S. Department of Education named NECB the most affordable private college in New England. New England College of Business and Finance (NECB) is accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC) and licensed by the Massachusetts Department of Higher Education. NECB offers a range of undergraduate and graduate programs in general business and finance, and in various specializations. NECB was one of the region’s first adopters of online academic delivery and fully

comports with best practices established by the Council of Regional Accrediting Commissions. NECB students consistently rank programs and services at the College well above nationally normed benchmarks. So there you have it. High quality online degree programs at an affordable cost. Does it get any better than that? Actually it does. For over a century, NECB has actively partnered with corporations to help them achieve their educational goals. A corporate partnership with NECB is the perfect way to extend additional education

benefits to employees at no cost to the organization. Employees and immediate family members of NECB’s partner organizations have access to preferred NECB tuition rates, which equate to about a 25% tuition reduction from NECB’s already affordable rates. Next Generation of Political Leaders Get Their Start at Suffolk When voters go to the polls in November, they’ll be choosing not just a president, but also thousands of leaders at all levels of government—from governors and mayors to judges and county officials. The candidates and their platforms often make front-page news, but they are only part of the political story. Just as important are the many consultants, researchers, advocates, lobbyists, and staffers who shape the political agenda and advance the interests of the electorate. Many of the people guiding campaigns, crafting policy, and influencing the public debate across the country got their start in politics right here in Boston—through Suffolk University’s Master of Science

in Political Science. Suffolk’s unique Professional Politics track enables graduates to excel in a wide range of political careers, as elected officials, and in consulting, policy, and staff roles. This program combines a solid theoretical understanding of political science with practical, career-ready skills, such as fundraising, polling, communication, and campaign management. Graduates leave with a strong understanding of the legislative process, voter behavior, ethics, lobbying, and special interest groups. Suffolk faculty members, drawing on their extensive professional backgrounds in government, politics, and consulting, prepare students to

make an immediate impact in the political realm. “Through our experiences, students learn what has worked, and not worked,” says program director Brian Conley. ” It helps them make better decisions in their own careers.” Suffolk alumni work at all levels of government and for consulting firms, advocacy groups, and other organizations. Jefferson Smith, for example, is the legislative director at the Massachusetts Department of Transportation. Smith not only finds his career in professional politics rewarding, he also sees it as a way to give back to the community. “I believe in public service and its ability to lift people up,” he says. “I have a chance to shape public policy

Press, the Wall Street Journal, and MSNBC. Suffolk offers all required courses in the evening, so students can pursue their degrees while working. They can move between full- and part-time study, as their needs require. For students with an interest in global politics, an international

relations track is also available. Just steps from the State House, Boston City Hall, and the regional headquarters of the federal government, Suffolk is the ideal venue to launch a political career. “Boston is the heart of politics in Massachusetts, and Suffolk’s location is second to none,” says Smith.

New Resources Support State-of-the-Art Active Learning at MGH Institute of Health Professions in Boston

MGH Institute Accelerated BSN students (l-r) Jennifer Tate, Kaitlin Connolly, Tom Gardner, Ryan Bearden, and Sarah Gall working at the school’s new state-of-the-art learning center.

Students at the MGH Institute in Boston have begun using interactive learning tools that promise to make them better nurses. Seated around horseshoe-shaped tables that include a 42-inch monitor, groups of five or six students employ several Web-based technologies that allow them to gain a more complete understanding of their newly chosen career. “It’s a lot better than sitting in a row, being lectured to for three or four hours,” said Accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing student Ryan Bearden. “It gives us a chance to learn from and with each other. It’s not just one-way learning.”

The new classrooms are in the MGH Institute’s newest building at 2 Constitution Center, just a few minutes from the school’s main campus located inside the Charlestown Navy Yard, and within yards of the U.S.S. Constitution. With the flick of a mouse, a student at one of the tables can flash his or her work up on the group’s large screen monitor. A professor can then display that page to all monitors in the room, allowing the other students to learn directly from each other. “Learning this way is much more student-centric than professorcentric,” noted BSN student Kaitlin Connolly. School of Nursing Assistant Professor Suellen Breakey, PhD, RN,

said student teams were created early in the semester. These teams will work on projects and even take some exams together during the program’s 14-month duration. “It works much better because it makes the exercises more relevant, and students mimic what they will experience in their clinical practice,” said Dr. Breakey. “It’s important that they learn to function as part of a team because that’s what they will have to do when they graduate.” The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics recently reported the median salary for RNs in the country was $64,690, and that demand for RNs is expected to grow 26%, adding more than 700,00 jobs, by the end of the decade.

College graduates with a degree in any field can apply to the MGH Institute. To RSVP for the March 21 Information Session, go to www.mghihp.edu/bsn.

Emmanuel College’s Graduate Programs in Human Resource Management Offer Opportunities in High-Growth Field The U.S. Department of Labor forecasts that job opportunities for managers and specialists in human resources, training and labor relations will grow by 22% through 2018. As the field of human resources continues to expand and to raise complex issues, a need exists for human resource (HR) managers capable of responding to ever-changing challenges. Emmanuel College, through its graduate programs in human resource management, guides professionals toward that next career-enhancing step to a dynamic HR position. Emmanuel College’s master’s degree and graduate certificate in Human Resource Management, which are delivered in both face-to-face and online formats, provide the foundation to become a successful human re-

source professional. Graduate programs focus on: designing compensation and benefits plans, implementing re-organization efforts, developing training and employee communications initiatives, and serving as a strategic partner for productivity in the workplace. Emmanuel’s faculty members are practitioner experts bringing experience from employers such as Verizon Wireless, Huron Consulting, Hewlett Packard, government agencies and many of the world’s top medical centers. “In class, students learn core HR competencies by analyzing real-world situations,” said faculty member Julie DeCosta, SPHR, associate director of human resources at Verizon Wireless. “I appreciate their willingness to be open-minded and

explore different ways of problem solving while learning and sharing in a rigorous academic environment.” Students choose to study at Emmanuel’s Boston campus, located in the heart of the Longwood Medical and Academic Area, or fully online. Through an accelerated format, the college creates an interactive learning environment designed for adult learners. The face-to-face graduate certificate and master’s degree in human resource management are delivered as seven-week graduate courses that meet just once per week, either weekday evenings or Saturdays, enabling students to fit academics into their professional and personal schedules. The online format is delivered as sevenweek graduate courses in an

asynchronous, instructor-led model. “I found most valuable the interaction with other professionals in my graduate courses and the practical experience the faculty brought to the classroom,” said student Katherine Scott, a human resource professional at biotechnology firm Tolerx in Cambridge, Mass. “That faculty interaction and networking supported my learning experience and enhanced all of the theoretical knowledge gained by reading and research. The effort is worth it in terms of the rewards of

knowledge, perspective, new relationships, professional development and recognition for achieving an advanced degree.” “Emmanuel’s HR program helped me to develop my strategic thinking skills and become a much more effective leader. I am amazed at how relevant the graduate courses are to my everyday work experiences,” said student Kendra Todesco, who works in human resources at Keurig, Incorporated in Reading, Mass. “I was able to apply newly learned theories in organizational development to the re-

design of Keurig, Incorporated’s organizational structure, and I became the leader of change.” Emmanuel College invites you to an upcoming information session: Tuesday, June 5, 2012 ; Tuesday, July 10, 2012; or Wednesday, November 7, 2012 from 5:00-7:00 p.m. on our Boston campus at 400 The Fenway, Boston MA. American careers to receive boost in 2012

What’s gotten lost amid the noise and saturation of bailouts and partisan politicking is the quiet recovery of the U.S. job market since mid-2009.1 While improvements haven’t always been consistent, drops in year-over-year unemployment rates are a welcomed sign for institutions highly invested in the future of Americans. One such organization is American Career Institute (ACI), a Massachusetts and Marylandbased career school looking to emphasize the unique, hard-working American spirit. According to Lauren Sullivan, ACI’s Regional Director of Admissions, there’s been a noticeable shift to get back to the values that made ACI strong in the first place. “Take a look at the auto industry. Even in a down economy, they’re reporting profits, notes

Sullivan. “The mindset in this country right now is that that hard work is important and should be rewarded. At ACI, we agree. In fact, projections for 2012 are the best yet. In a CareerBuilder survey featuring 3,000 hiring managers, 23% intend to hire full-time employees in 2012, against only 16% planning to cut staff. While these numbers are only slightly up from 2011, they’re a big improvement upon 2008’s endof-year numbers, where just 14% of employers planned on hiring new employees.2 Sullivan sees these statistics as an encouraging sign for their graduates. “Of course, any uptick in employment is a positive thing for our students. But it’s the mood of the country right now that is so encouraging. It’s at the heart of what we do here. What ACI does is provide hands-on, real-world training for its students to prepare them for future careers. Each of their instructors has experience in the fields they teach, ranging from

Medical to Dental to Information Technology to Digital Media. Plus, they offer flexible schedules and ongoing career placement assistance to make sure an American education can help its students once they re-enter the job market. “The fact of the matter is, we’re now seeing proof that people are excited to buy things made in America, says Sullivan. “Why shouldn’t the same sentiments apply to people? With a renewed sense of passion and purpose, American Career Institute is calling all students to train for meaningful careers at one of their many campuses. Babson Redefines Entrepreneurship – Helping You Define Your Career Goals

Are you an entrepreneur? To succeed in today’s economy, you have to be. But what exactly is an entrepreneur? What do they know and what do they do? Are you born that way or can you learn to be one? Babson was the first to understand that “entrepreneur” is not a personality type but a way of thinking and acting to create economic and social value. Today, Babson promotes Entrepreneurial Thought and Action® as the most powerful force for positive change in the world. The Babson MBA Program has been ranked #1 for Entrepreneurship in the nation for 18 consecutive years by U.S. News & World Report. That’s because unlike other schools, Babson infuses entrepreneurship education throughout the overall academic pedagogy, rather than teaching it as a siloed subject. Our diverse and accomplished faculty will immerse you in the nuts and bolts, and the rewards and opportunities, of Entrepreneurship of All Kinds®. Entrepreneurship: The wellspring of innovation “Babson seeks to continuously redefine the concept of entrepreneurship in the face of changing global economic realities,” says Raghu Tadepalli, Ph.D., Murata Dean and Professor of Marketing, F.W. Olin Graduate School of Business at Babson. “We teach our students to have a broader worldview; they quickly understand that there are all kinds of ways to make an impact on people’s lives, and entrepreneurship is the wellspring of innovation that makes it all possible.”

As one would expect from a school of Babson’s reputation, our MBAs gain strong foundational business skills here – but even more, they learn to be comfortable with ambiguity, to embrace accountability, and to be adaptable in a wide range of contexts. They are taught to identify and capitalize on opportunities, and are committed to using both their entrepreneurial mindset and their business skills to benefit themselves, their organizations, their communities, and, ultimately, the world at large. A unified MBA program Recently, Babson significantly revamped its highly ranked MBA program in response to a rapidly changing world that needs entrepreneurial leaders with vision, ability, and compassion. The new, unified MBA curriculum offers a wide range of programmatic elements that prepare students for the jobs of tomorrow and an increasingly globalized economy. With the new Babson MBA curriculum, our graduates will emerge ready to lead and committed to making a difference in organizations of all types and sizes. Babson’s unified MBA program and curriculum is delivered in two full-time (one-year and two-year) and

two part-time options (evening and a blended onsite/online “Fast Track” program). Regardless of which option you choose, you will take the same courses with the same stellar faculty, ensuring a transformative, hands-on MBA experience from which you will emerge an entrepreneurial leader with a global mindset. A local school where you can go far Babson’s beautiful, treelined main campus is located in Wellesley, with satellite facilities in the “Innovation District” along the picturesque South Boston waterfront. In our living/learning laboratory, we offer dozens of student clubs, numerous academic and research centers, and easy access to all the arts, culture – and employment opportunities – that Boston is known for. As beautiful as our campuses are, however, they really act as a launch pad for our graduates who find that a Babson MBA opens doors to exciting careers. According to Kathy McGettrick, vice president of market insights at IBM, “Babson students are well-equipped to take their deep insights and practical knowledge and turn them into successful strategies for our company.”

Brady will have some new and some familiar faces to throw to in 2012 Stallworth comes back, five years after first stint with team It didn’t happen on Day 1 of NFL free agency. Or Day 2 or Day 3. But the New England Patriots have reloaded their wide receiving corps, a certain position of need going into the offseason. In perhaps one of the biggest bargains of NFL free agency, they locked up Brandon Lloyd for three years and roughly $12 million. There’s the deep threat they’ve lacked since Randy Moss left. Lloyd’s last two seasons in the NFL have been noteworthy for two reasons: 1. He’s totaled 2,414 receiving yards and 16 touchdowns. 2. He’s done most of that damage under the coaching of now current Patriots offensive coordinator Josh

Journeyman For a journeyman, Donte Stallworth has had a fine NFL career. New Orleans Stallworth got his NFL start in the Big Easy, catching 70 balls for 945 yards and seven touchdowns in 2005-06. It was his best season as a pro. Stallworth has also played for Philly, Cleveland, Baltimore and Washington.

McDaniels. Lloyd can stretch the field and open things up inside for the likes of Wes Welker and Rob Gronkowski, and again, in an offseason where Pierre Garcon got a five-year, $42 million contract, Lloyd is an absolute steal — not to mention a huge upgrade over Deion Branch and Chad Ochocinco. But the Patriots weren’t done. They went out and signed former Colts wide receiver Anthony Gonzalez to a one-year deal, and then on Monday signed Donte’ Stallworth. Stallworth was part of the Patriots’ historic 2007 team (again, with Josh McDaniels here), totaling 697 yards on 46 catches with three touchdowns. After three dismal seasons on the Browns, Ravens, and Redskins, Stallworth is undoubtedly in the best position he’s been in since leaving the team. The Patriots also addressed their extreme need for a tight

end (kidding). By signing veteran TE Daniel Fells from the Broncos, the Patriots bring on a third tight end they didn’t have last season. That will provide not only blocking help when need be, but allow Aaron Hernandez to show his versatility lining up as a wide receiver at times.

So what does this mean for the Patriots? Well, an already stellar offense just got that much better. It doesn’t take a genius to realize that the NFL is all about passing now, and with Tom Brady at quarterback and a restocked set of receiving options, the Patriots should again be one of the best

offenses in the NFL. The Patriots went 18-1 in Stallworth’s only season with the team. This season’s offensive production should be similar, but its outcome is to be determined. JIMMY TOSCANO sports@metro.us

NCAA tournament storylines to follow GETTY IMAGES

We are firmly entrenched in an odd portion of the NCAA tournament, those three days between an intriguing first weekend and what figures to be a wild second weekend. It is the calm before, and after, the storm. To bide our time, here are three takeaways from the first four days of full action. Tomorrow, we’ll take a look at three items to look for as the Big Dance moves on to the Sweet 16. The East regionals will be held in Boston starting Thursday.

TUESDAY, MARCH 20, 2012

It has to happen soon A No. 16 seed will defeat a No. 1 seed in the next few years. There have been enough close calls, and this year we saw Syracuse barely survive a battle with UNCAsheville. Group that nearupset with the two victories by 15-seeds and you have evidence that the margin may be thinning.

The green light Draymond Green

Draymond Green was awarded Big 10 Player of the Year in large part due to an all-

around cerebral game that carries Michigan State. Now those outside the Midwest are seeing how special he can be. While not the flashiest athlete in the event, Green did some of everything in recording the seventh tripledouble in tournament history in a second-round win over LIU Brooklyn. He followed that up with 16 points, 13 rebounds and six assists against St. Louis. If the Spartans go all the way, Green is a shoo-in for Most Outstanding Player.

’Cuse can survive The Fab Melo incident (incidentally the name of my band in high school) has yet to ruin Syracuse’s run, although there was an adjustment period in that controversial opener. Against KSU, the Orange played like a No. 1 seed should, laying the hammer down in a second half that saw them shoot 67 percent from the floor. Still, some have to be concerned that Syracuse has allowed 32 offensive rebounds through its first two tourney games. TONY LEE

Jon Lester will get the start on Opening Day for the Red Sox, manager Bobby Valentine announced yesterday. Josh Beckett told Valentine that Lester should get the honor. “Josh explained it to me about starting pitchers and their Opening Day status or mentality,” Valentine said. “He thought that Jon earned the job last year and didn’t do anything to lose it.” The Red Sox open their 2012 season on the road in Detroit on April 5 at 1 p.m. Boston’s home opener is April 13 at 2 p.m. against Tampa Bay.

Pats should go after Tebow Patriots likely to make a pitch for QB now that Peyton’s in Denver Versatility would be a main selling point for Patriots Tebow could take QB reins once Brady era comes to end Familiarity with McDaniels Jack of all trades

Hail Timmy, not so full of grace, the Patriots may be blessed with thee; blessed art thou amongst Tom Brady, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb of Gisele, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of Belichick, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.

Of course, the question that is immediately asked when it comes to Tebow-to-New England is, ‘why on earth would the Patriots want to take Tom Brady off the field?’ The quick answer is that they wouldn’t. Tebow could be lined up at tight end. He could be placed at fullback. He could be placed at running back. He could be (don’t laugh) placed at safety. In Bill Belichick’s history, there is one thing that he covets just about more than anything else: versatility. We saw it with Troy Brown, Mike Vrabel, Julien Edelman, Dan Klecko, Dan Connolly, Richard Seymour and even Doug Flutie.

The flirtation was always there. Prior to the 2010 NFL draft, the Patriots wined and dined Tim Tebow at Tresca, an Italian restaurant in Boston’s North End, owned by Boston hockey legend Ray Bourque. Following the draft, the move was seen as nothing more than a smokescreen. Perhaps the one guy who didn’t buy Belichick’s ploy was Josh McDaniels, who as HC of the DE-N drafted Tebow with the 25th overall selection. Perhaps McDaniels knew that Belichick was serious. Fast forward two years. McDaniels is back on the Patriots staff and New England is now the NFL dark horse to land the pop culture phenom of 2011 .

Tebow in 2010 Josh McDaniels was fired as the head coach of the Denver Broncos on Dec. 5, 2010. It was after that Tebow got a chance to run the show, paving the way to Tebowmania in 2011. 39-23 loss at Oakland In his first NFL start, Tebow completed eight of 16 passes

for 138 yards and a touchdown. 24-23 win over Houston Tebow passed for 308 yards on 16-of-29 passing and had a touchdown and INT. 33-28 loss against San Diego Tebow threw for 205 yards on 16-of-36 passing and had a pair of touchdown throws as well as a pair of picks to close out Year 1.

Quoted

“We need players at (QB) to be very good players. If we have the chance to make him special, that’s what we’re looking for.”

Then there is Tebow’s obvious tie to McDaniels, who is once again in charge of the Pats offense. McDaniels played Tebow in his very first eligible NFL game in Week 1 of the 2010 season. While Tebow had just two yards on two carries, it was obvious that McDaniels was

hell-bent on finding a way to get Tebow involved in his offense. In other words, McDaniels believes in Tebow just as much as any coach in the league. With the Pats signing Brandon Lloyd over the weekend, it seems as though McDaniels is going to have a big say in terms of what the Patriots do in the immediate future.

Brady’s successor? Scrambling quarterbacks have replaced legends under center before. Now while Tebow has eons to go before he can think about becoming the next Steve Young, it would probably do No. 15 some good to learn from one of the all-time greats in Brady. Brady has stated before that he wants to play until he’s 40. In the NFL, five years goes by in a flash. Yup, the Patriots have to start considering life after Brady, now. MATT BURKE

operations John Elway on Monday morning to inform him of his decision. Manning passed the recent physical exam given to him by Denver doctors. The four-time NFL MVP also called San Francisco and Tennessee to let them know of his choice to go to Denver. The move will likely lead to the trade of quarterback Tim Tebow. METRO

Celtics O’Neal to have season-ending surgery

Mets owners reach settlement with Madoff trustee for a cool $162 million

According to the Boston Herald, Celtics center Jermaine O’Neal will have surgery on his left wrist, effectively ending his 2011-12 season. The burden of proof was too much. The New York Times' Richard Sandomir reported Monday morning that Fred Wilpon, majority owner of the Mets, has settled with Bernie Madoff trustee Irving Picard for $162 million. This was really a team effort," Wilpon told reporters outside the courthouse after the settlement was reached. "We are not willfully blind. We acted in good faith." Picard was seeking $303 million from the Wilpons on

MY OFFICE IS

.

Your office is where ideas happen. It could be in an office building, or in your home, your favorite park bench, your car. A hospital, a school, a warehouse.
