JetBlue pilot’s family says he meant no harm Family of pilot who was subdued by passengers on flight asks for privacy Capt. Clayton Osbon still undergoing medical treatment in Texas After being charged, faces possible $250,000 fine and time in jail The wife of JetBlue Airways Capt. Clayton Osbon, who was subdued by passengers while his plane was in flight last week, said the family is declining interviews, and they don’t believe he intended to hurt anyone. Connye Osbon asked the media to respect its privacy and said the family won’t be granting any interviews or making any further public comments, according to the statement released yesterday by JetBlue on the family’s behalf. “We would like to recognize the crew and passengers of Flight 191 for their effective yet compassionate han-

We know you were placed in an awful situation and we appreciate your ability to respond professionally.” The captain began acting erratically during a flight that departed from JFK Airport on March 27. Osbon was locked out of the cockpit by his co-
pilot as the plane, JetBlue Flight 191, was diverted to Texas. Osbon, 49, was tackled and sat upon by passengers when he tried to re-enter the cockpit after briefly stepping out, the company and federal officials said. An off-duty pilot, who had entered the cockpit while Osbon was gone, helped land the Las Vegas-bound flight in Amarillo, Texas. Right now, Osbon is being evaluated and treated at Northwest Texas Healthcare System hospital in Amarillo. He faces as many as 20 years in prison after being charged with interfering with the plane’s flight crew, U.S. Attorney Sarah R. Saldana said in a statement last week.
‘Leap of Faith’ sought Osbon turned off the plane’s radios, dimmed his monitors and told the first officer on board that “we need to take a leap of faith,” according to court documents. After the plane left JFK, Osbon “started trying to correlate completely unrelated numbers like different radio frequencies, and he talked about sins in Las Vegas,” according to court filings. “At some point, Osbon told the first officer, ‘We’re not going to Vegas.’” According to reports, Osbon's father died in a plane crash in 1995. Ronald Osbon died while piloting a small personal plane en route to Daytona Beach, Fla. Osbon reported losing power on both engines just before the crash.

In New York, the average temperature was 50.9 degrees, which was 8.9 degrees above normal, while below the record 51.1 degrees in 1945, according to the weather service. Across the U.S., 7,577 all-time daily high temperatures were set or matched in March. The warm weather contributed to a decline in natural gas prices, as less energy was needed to heat homes. Cracking down on text message ‘cramming’ EMILY ANNE EPSTEIN/METRO
Those unwanted “joke of the day” or celebrity gossip text messages are certainly annoying. But what New Yorkers may not know is that they can be costly, too. The practice is known as “cramming,” and it’s when third parties inundate thousands of cell phone numbers with silly information sent via text. Except some people are later billed for those text messages, in charges that show up labeled as “service fee,” “other fees,” “voicemail,” “calling plan” or other vague terms. “No one should be able to put a charge on your cell phone bill unless you have given explicit consent,” said U.S. Senator Charles Schumer, who is calling on wireless carriers to fix the increasingly common problem. “Cell phone bills nowadays can be dozens of pages long — and if you don’t pay close attention, buried in your bill somewhere could be a $10 charge you never authorized or mistakenly agreed to by replying to an unsolicited text.” But you can still be charged
“It’s becoming more and more common that the charges appear first, and then consumers have to dispute them later.” U.S. SENATOR CHARLES SCHUMER
even if you ignore such a text message. One New York City man recently received text messages with random information,
such as, “Flamingos are pink because they eat shrimp.” He then got a follow-up text that stated he could end the bothersome messages by texting “STOP.” The man didn’t reply out of fear he would only get more spam. But nonetheless he later got a suspicious charge on his monthly bill for $9.99 for “ringtone.” Schumer is calling on carriers like Verizon and AT&T to voluntarily prohibit third-party billing if customers do not explicitly say they want such services. It’s an onerous process to dispute the charges, and it’s one cell phone users shouldn’t have to go through, said Schumer. Specifically, Schumer said he wants the Federal Communications Commission to require wireless carriers get affirmative consent from consumers for any third-party charge — before it winds up at the bottom of a bill. Toxic tofu suspected in botulism outbreak
NYC DEPT. OF HEALTH
One person remains hospitalized after a rare outbreak of botulism in New York City, according to the health department, which is investigating a possible tofu link to the illness. Two people contracted the serious disease after buying tofu from the same store in Flushing, according to health officials. One of the two who became ill was released from the hospital during the weekend, but the other person remains under medical care, a city Department of Health spokeswoman told Metro. Both patients are Chinesespeaking Queens residents and had recently purchased fresh bulk tofu, which sat out at room temperature at the store. That kind of tofu is commonly sold in an open, waterfilled bin, and is often made into a popular Chinese dish known as fermented or “stinky” tofu. Officials say the tofu sold was not made at the store, and they are currently trying to determine where it was made and how it was distributed. Caused by an extremely potent toxin, botulism is a very rare but serious foodborne ill-

ness. The last time a case was reported in New York City was 15 years ago, say health officials. The toxin affects the body’s nervous system, and symptoms include blurred or double vision, weakness or paralysis, poor reflexes, difficulty swallowing and speaking, and difficulty breathing. Symptoms of foodborne botulism usually occur 12 to 36 hours after ingestion, but may take several days. If left untreated, botulism can be fatal. As the investigation contin-
ues, health experts are warning New Yorkers not to buy and to throw away all fresh bulk tofu that has been kept at room temperature. Even cooking this type of tofu is not a definite safeguard against botulism, as the organism’s spores can still remain in the food. Once brought home, fresh tofu should always be kept refrigerated, health experts said. Prepackaged tofu products which are refrigerated are still safe. CARLY BALDWIN

Santorum won’t quit race; GOP leader calls for unity
GETTY IMAGES
GETTY IMAGES
The U.S. Senate’s top Republican called on his party to unite behind leading presidential candidate Mitt Romney yesterday as rival Rick Santorum vowed to stay in the race beyond a likely defeat in tomorrow’s Wisconsin primary. Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell stopped short of endorsing Romney in an interview on CNN’s “State of the Union” show. But McConnell did say the former Massachusetts governor would make an “excellent nominee” and left little doubt about whom he supported in the battle to take on Democratic President Barack Obama in the Nov. 6 election. “It’s time to turn our attention to the fall campaign and make the case against the president of the United States.

SENATE REPUBLICAN LEADER MITCH MCCONNELL SAID, REFERRING TO ROMNEY.
“It’s important to get behind the person who is obviously going to be our nominee,” McConnell said, referring to Romney. A victory in Wisconsin’s primary tomorrow would give Romney an almost insurmountable lead in the Republicans’ state-by-state nominating contest. McConnell joined a chorus of other top Republicans who have called for the nominating process to wind down.
Santorum said a defeat in Wisconsin would not force him from the race and predicted he would do well in May, when several conservative states hold their primaries.

itt Romney has trust issues. The Republican presidential candidate, accused of having worn through more flip-flops than a spring break veteran, has earned a reputation of trustworthiness approximately commensurate with that owed to an Etch-a-Sketch. Over the course of his political career, but especially during the tendentious 2012 nominating process, the infamous “Massachusetts moderate” has become known for saying whatever needs saying, whenever it needs to be said, with the express goal of serving his political ambitions. Cynical readers will note that this actually describes all politicians. Of course. But that doesn’t mean we can’t still hold Romney rhetorically accountable for his obvious dissembling. Take this past weekend for example, during which His Mittness addressed a Wisconsin crowd ahead of the state’s primary tomorrow, touting his apparent immuni-

ty to partisan hackery. “I didn’t criticize in a public and personal way the Sen-
ate president or the speaker of the House,” Romney said, claiming that as governor he was able to stand above the typical divide between the two parties. “They would attack me because that’s what Republicans and Democrats do to each other. At one point, one of the two of them — I won’t mention which one — sent me a note. And he said, ‘I’ve noticed that you don’t respond to my attacks, I’m going to stop attacking you.’ And there began a better relationship.”

ou see? Just like his porous positions on abortion rights and the individual mandate, Romney was for bipartisan harmony before he was against it. He would never attack his rivals, because that’s what those other people do, and he’s not one of them. Except, of course, when he is. Like that same day, when he accused President Obama of failing America and of having radically different views from the rest of us. “Our president doesn’t have the same feelings about American exceptionalism that we do,” Romney said within hours of his high-minded refutation of ad hominem attacks. “This president has failed us. ... He broke a lot of promises.” Romney, on the other hand, is a man of his words. All of them, unfortunately. Metro does not endorse the opinions of the author, or any opinions expressed on its pages.

Although some might suggest that SBTRKT bridges the boundaries between DJ-produced electro and traditional rock, he says he doesn’t let anything like genre stand in the way of composition. “In terms of writing music, I don’t think about boundaries,” says Aaron Jerome, the U.K.based producer who becomes SBTRKT when he puts on an African-themed mask and gets in front of a console. “I think there are so many facets of music out there — I’m just going to keep trying different ideas.” Best known for the smooth electropop single “Wildfire,” Jerome spent March cruising music festivals — from the allencompassing SXSW conference in Texas to electronic-focused Ultra Music Festival in Miami. SBTRKT refers to the idea that Jerome is “subtracting” his
personal identity from the music. Unlike other electro acts, who perform hunched over buttons, SBTRKT focuses on live performance using live drums and collaborating with singer Sampha. “I try to use the best instruments possible for each environment,” says Jerome. And after the recording is completed, he says the songs continue to evolve in a live setting. “Every week, I’m adding new sounds, new synths,” he says. “[The songs] are constantly developing and writing themselves.” In touring through the U.K., Australia and now the U.S., the one thing that Jerome has noticed about SBTRKT crowds is the reaction. “It’s always kind of crazy that the songs you create have meaning in the world,” he says.

Lily Collins is the new Snow White in ‘Mirror Mirror’ ‘I never thought that I’d be sword-fighting and fencing and learning all these cool stunts’

ily Collins faces quite the tall order with director Tarsem Singh’s “Mirror Mirror” — namely, putting a nonanimated face and an updated spin on perhaps the most classic of fairy tales, “Snow White and the Seven Dwarves.” But it’s a challenge she’s been happy to tackle. Even with a competing Snow White film grabbing for headlines, Collins (aka singer Phil’s daughter) is working hard to keep her focus where she wants it.
Finn, left, and Jake meet Flame Princess in the season premiere of “Adventure Time.”
‘Adventure Time’ ANIMATED. Finn plays with fire
— literally — when he and his magical dog Jake encounter the Flame Princess, whom our boy-hero falls for in this cheeky, whimsical animated series. Season premiere, 7:30 p.m., Cartoon Network
Did you ever think, in playing a fairy tale princess, that you’d get to do an action movie training montage?
No! I mean, it was written in the script that she meets the dwarves and there would be sword-fighting, but the script changed so much during filming that this montage, when it was added, I thought, “This is going to be so much fun to shoot.” It took a long time to shoot, but when it’s all cut together with the music, it’s just so fun. And I never thought that I’d be sword-fighting and fencing and learning all these cool stunts. It is an interesting update. Fairy tales traditionally aren’t great for the females — lots of sitting around and pining, waiting to be rescued.
And that’s what we did not want. We didn’t want to take the animation and just make it live-action. We wanted to take it and have a reason to redo it. In today’s day and age, girls are very empowered to do the

same things that guys do. And young girls want to see movies that show people that they admire are not needing the prince as much as they used to. How was it playing opposite Armie Hammer with these new takes on Snow White and Prince Charming?
It was fun because we both agreed from the get-go it’s a very Katharine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy back-and-forth — not just the physicality of the sword-fighting but the physicality of the language, because it is so back and forth, and we’re both trying to oneup each other in conversations. It was very playful. There’s that other Snow White
I think it was known before we even started that there were these two projects. Aesthetically and with the storyline, they’re so different. I think more of the struggle was just this whole, like, who’s coming out first kind of a thing and making sure there’s enough time in between so that everyone’s not overloaded with the fairy tale. But that never really trickled down to us on set. NED EHRBAR METRO WORLD NEWS IN LOS ANGELES

Ways to spring into happiness DIGITAL VISION

pringtime ignites a whole new attitude in city-dwellers. The heavy layers come off, the Frisbees start flying and a state of newfound happiness sets in. This spring season, amp up your good vibes with my tips for happiness.
It’s time to toss around the Frisbee instead of the snowballs.
Spring clean your mind: Spring
DOWNTOWN PODIATRY manhattan’s premiere foot doctors
offers us an awesome opportunity for cleaning house. Rather than put so much emphasis on spring-cleaning your closet, though, why don’t you clear out some of the clutter in your mind? There’s likely a thought (or several) that has been holding you back and keeping you stuck. Get honest with yourself about the negative thoughts that are limiting you and commit to a mental spring cleaning. The simplest way to begin is to start each day with a more positive intention. Each morning, affirm your desire for the day by saying: “Today I choose to perceive my life with positivity. I am willing to release the
negative thoughts that have been holding me back from happiness.” This simple mantra will jump-start your day with powerful energy and a commitment to happiness. Making the conscious decision to choose happiness will begin your mental clearing process. Take a sun break: If you work at a desk or spend too much time indoors, make a point to step outside to soak up the sunshine. The sun has so many healing elements. When you’re exposed to direct sunlight you produce endorphins, which bring about a burst of positive energy. Take a sun break once a
day and let happiness shine upon you! Plan a picnic: City-dwellers spend too much time eating takeout or obsessing over the latest hot restaurant. This spring, take advantage of the park and share an awesome picnic. You’ll find joy in preparing a meal for a friend and saving some cash while you’re at it. Bring your new attitude to the park, soak up the rays and enjoy your picnic! — Gabrielle Bernstein is the author of “Spirit Junkie.” Metro does not endorse the opinions of the author, or any opinions expressed on its pages.

How to break into the fashion industry It’s an intimidating field, no doubt But everyone has to start somewhere — and there’s room for everyone, according to one expert
M
issouri State professor Michele Granger wrote the book on breaking into the fashion industry — three times over. “Fashion Entrepreneurship: Retail Business Planning” and “The Fashion Intern” are both in their second editions. Plus, “Fashion: The Industry and Its Careers” is a must-read for anyone curious about a career in the field.
What’s a good first step for breaking into the fashion industry? The Christian Dior runway may be a long way off, but undergrads can start planning now.
Retail work — especially for kids that are still in high school. You get exposed to the products, management and sales. For college students, it’s
a step they can take before they move in at a higher level after graduation. What degrees should undergrads consider?
There are really two primary avenues. One is a degree in fashion design or fashion product development; the other is fashion merchandising. Design skews toward the artistic, creative people. Merchandising is more of the business end.
Michele Granger
“[Fashion] runs the gamut. ... If you figure out your skill set, you’ll likely find a direction within the industry.” GRANGER
The fashion industry seems to embody myriad industries — from finance to creative design.
Fashion is a lifestyle. It runs the gamut: what you put in your house, your stationary, what you put on your body. Add to that an incredible amount of news and journalism about the
industry — publications and websites. If you figure out your skill set, you’ll likely find a direction within the industry. Is there room for altruism in a fashion industry career?
There are more and more non-profits and others within the industry doing wonderful work: Housing Works and TOMS are just two. A lot of students say, “I don’t want to be part of an industry that’s frivolous and wasteful.” We make sure to cover moral and ethical issues in our coursework at Missouri State, and any good program should do that. Lottery mania could yield better results Can we all agree that giving $640 million to potentially one person, or even a few people, is obscene and completely stupid? What are they going to spend it on — 10,000 yachts, 900 mansions? It’s too much. They’d have been better to announce, “We are going to pick 5,000 winners to split it.” Why don’t we create a more intelligent lottery where more people automatically win each week, but win $100,000 a year for the rest of their lives? I bet most Americans, if it were put to a vote, would choose this method, because their odds of winning would be infinitely better. Also, if 1,000 people every single week won $100,000 per year, this would help our economy more and reduce unemployment too! It also
means they wouldn’t go insane like the winners who receive too much. And it means they wouldn’t be mugged, like a person who wins millions is too often!

to your critique of my letter: “People like Minkin” (thank you for being polite) will “read malevolence” into what Obama whispered to Medvedev over the hot mic since we find it very disappointing that our President would attempt, for reelection sake alone, to hide his true intentions from the American people and yet to share those with the government of a foreign country, especially such a strong rival of ours. What you call his “pretty ambiguous statement” is in fact crystal clear — to make concessions to Russia and to scale down our missile defense of Europe, which also telegraphs his weakness, both as a leader and as a diplomat, to our allies and enemies alike. Frankly, his chances for re-election have just suffered a huge blow. And I’m not a Republican, if that’s what you thought.

THIRD WATCH No longer the rising star, Robinson Cano is the best all-around hitter on the Yankees Joe Girardi has slotted him in the No. 3 spot Can he carry team back to the playoffs?
B
eing the second-best hitter on a Yankees squad is nothing to sneeze at. After all, Lou Gehrig was the second-best hitter in the 1927 lineup. Then again, when you become the best hitter on the team, that is worthy of a celebration. It may go without saying that second baseman Robinson Cano is the best hitter on the 2012 Yankees. He was probably the best hitter on the 2010 and 2011 team too. So why didn’t anyone notice? Cano finished sixth in MVP voting last season and third the year before. Third will also be the new position Cano will take in the batting order — traditionally reserved for the best pure hitter on a team. Alex Rodriguez held that position for a long time. “I’m proud of it, proud to bat third because it shows I’ve continued to work hard,” Cano told The New York Times this week. “But I’ll hit wherever they want me. It doesn’t matter, because wherever you hit in this lineup, you have to produce.” Cano has never hogged the spotlight on a team that has super-priced free agents Mark Teixeira and Rodriguez and homegrown heroes like Derek Jeter. But he’s surpassed those players at the plate and all for a measly $10 million last season. He will likely be a free agent after next season (the team owns a club option for 2013), but that’s an issue for down the road. As the Yankees shift into the future, Cano will be the centerpiece. Jeter and Ro-

driguez will be gone. Those veterans are already being relegated to stints at designated hitter to keep them fresh. Meanwhile, Cano has missed 11 games in the last five years. Combined. Now he is trying to bounce back from a down year in 2011. He only hit .302 with 28 home runs. When you hit .342 in your second season in the majors, that’s a down year. MARK OSBORNE

Rivera on a good-bye tour? When you are the greatest player ever at your position, you deserve one last lap around the league to receive your standing ovations. Yankees closer Mariano Rivera, on the other hand, would prefer to keep that victory lap a secret. No one besides Rivera, not
Rivera
even manager Joe Girardi or general manager Brian Cashman, know if he will retire
after the 2012 season. But his comments at the opening of spring training have led many of believe it is his last. “It is hard when you have the ability to continue and you have to make that decision [whether to retire]," Rivera said as camp opened. “It is hard. For me, baseball is not everything.” Whether it’s his last season or not, he’ll still deserve standing ovations. METRO
Projected lineup
1
Derek Jeter, SS — Had a nice bounceback season last year.
2
Curtis Granderson, CF — Were those 41 HR an aberration or the norm now?
3
Robinson Cano, 2B — Best hitter on the team and it isn’t even close.
4
Alex Rodriguez, 3B — He’ll see time at DH also, but they need some offense.
5
Mark Teixeira, 1B — Power numbers were good, but .248 AVG won’t cut it.
6
Nick Swisher, RF — Could be final year in the Bronx. Contract year?
7
Raul Ibanez, DH — Has struggled in spring, lets see what he has left.
8
Russell Martin, C — His average has dropped the last five seasons.
9
Brett Gardner, LF — His .259 AVG in 2011 won’t cut it.

General manager Sandy Alderson says ‘the sky is not falling’ Mets fans Lineup looks solid as long as everyone is healthy (knock on wood) So will their ace show up or will it be another sad season in Queens?
Projected lineup
NICK LAHAM/GETTY IMAGES
1
Andres Torres, CF — Unproven is putting it lightly. He’s played one full season (2010) and had a .343 OBP. They’d take that.
2
Daniel Murphy, 2B — The real question will always be defense. As a hitter, he should be solid in the No. 2 spot.
3
David Wright, 3B — They need more power out of Wright this year. Hopefully the new wall helps.
4
Jason Bay, LF — We could write “see above.” Oh, and please stay healthy for once.
5 6 7 8
Ike Davis, 1B — If he plays like he did before being injured, watch out. Lucas Duda, RF — His .370 OBP is the highest of any returning player.
Someone
to depend on Rarely does a team have the luxury of their biggest question mark being a two-time Cy Young winner. But that’s where the Mets stand heading into 2012 season. Johan Santana is in the second-to-last season of a sixyear, $137.5 million contact. Slightly over 21 million of that came last season, when he didn’t throw a single pitch.
The rotation
Josh Thole, C — The .268 AVG and .345 OBP of last year would delight the Mets. Ruben Tejada, SS — No, he’s not exactly going to replace Jose Reyes. But he’s just 22 and played well last year.
And yet, on a team where nothing seems to go right, the best news of spring training has consistently been about Santana’s progress from major shoulder surgery. In his 18 1/3 innings pitched he’s allowed 17 hits and struck out 13, while pitching to a 3.44 ERA. While spring training statistics don’t necessarily mean much, being healthy enough to throw every five
Dickey
The Mets’ lineup isn’t bad when healthy, it’s their pitching that holds a lot of the questions.
1
Johan Santana, LHP If healthy, you can pencil him in for about 175
innings and a sub-3.50 ERA.
2
R.A. Dickey, RHP When not climbing mountains, the knuckleballer has been the team’s best pitcher the last two years.
3
Jon Niese, LHP The 25-year-old could be entering a make or break third full season.
4
Dillon Gee, RHP If he cuts down his walks (71 in ‘11) he’s a solid No. 4.
5
Mike Pelfrey, RHP Stop licking your hand and live up to expectations.
days does. Manager Terry Collins announced this past weekend that Santana will take the ball on Opening Day. It’s been a long road back. “It means everything that we have done since I had my surgery, all the way to today, has been paid off,” Santana told reporters after being named the Game 1 starter. “We worked hard. And I’m very happy. I’m very happy that I have an opportunity to start the season from day one with the team. That’s something that I really was looking forward to. I’m excited about it.” The Mets hope Santana will still be with the team at Game 162 as well. With just one year left on his contract after this season, he could be a prime trade piece on the market this July — if he is still healthy and depending on how competitive the Mets are this season. It’s no secret those two things will go hand-in-hand as well. MARK OSBORNE

Wright, Bay happy to see new walls If you rebuild it, the home runs will come. That is the hope for the Mets anyway. After three seasons of woeful home run totals at Citi Field, the Mets organization finally decided to change the dimensions of their cavernous home park. A shorter left field wall, previously at 16 feet, was built to make the distance shorter and the height was cut in half. The “Mo Zone” in right field was removed altogether, which the cutout area being changed into a straight angle. This brought in the wall from 415 feet to 390 feet. “It’s nice to look out there and you see the
adjustments and you know in the back of your mind that hopefully if you hit a ball well, it’s going to go out,” Wright told reporters after arriving at spring training, where the dimensions in Port St. Lucie were adjusted to mirror Citi Field. The Mets hope both Wright and Jason Bay will benefit from the smaller dimensions. Wright has hit just 22 home runs in his three years at Citi Field, while his final three years at Shea Stadium he hit 50 homers, including 21 in 2008 alone. Bay’s power numbers haven’t just decreased, they’ve disappeared. After hitting 36 homers in 2009 with Boston, he’s hit 18 in two years with New York. David Wright

Which team will lead the majors in wins during the regular season?
Which hitter will have the best regular season?
Which pitcher will have the best regular season?
Which team will be a surprise — good or bad — this year?
Detroit. They already had perennial Cy Young candidate Justin Verlander. Now the Tigers throw Prince Fielder’s 40 home runs into the mix. We’re betting on 100 wins and a cigarette endorsement deal for Jim Leyland.
Joey Votto. The 28year-old sometimes gets lost in the shuffle, but with Prince Fielder and Albert Pujols changing leagues, it’s his time.
Roy Halladay. Silence all the Stephen Strasburg talk right now. Doc spent his offseason wrestling snakes and polishing his two Cy Young awards. Mark the Phillies’ ace down for 22 wins and 240 innings. Another hohum season.
Pittsburgh. They haven’t had a winning season since 1992 and are throwing out Erik Bedard on Opening Day. Still, in a weak division, we like the Bucs to do some damage. Andrew McCutchen is a five-tool talent.
Angels. Sure, everyone knows they added Albert Pujols, but look at their pitching staff. Jered Weaver, C.J. Wilson, Dan Haren and Ervin Santana could be the best top 4 in the entire majors. Oh, also, they signed Albert Pujols.
Jose Bautista. Forget all the nonsensical steroids talk. This guy should have won the AL MVP last year. He batted .302 with a .447 OBP and clubbed 42 home runs to give him the best OPS in the majors as well. He’s real people.
San Francisco. The offense was dreadful last season, but the return of Buster Posey in the middle of the lineup should help reverse San Fran’s fortunes.
Miguel Cabrera. Reported to camp in the “best shape of his life.” That's not saying much, but all signs point to an otherworldly season.
Clayton Kershaw. It was Kershaw, not Halladay or Verlander, who had the best ERA in the majors last year. He had 248 strikeouts in 233 1/3 IP.
Cabrera is a slightly slimmer bad man.
Justin Verlander. Still the gold standard. Could the 2011 AL MVP and Cy Young Award winner possibly match his 2011 output?
Atlanta. This is going to be an ugly surprise. The Braves have Matt Diaz and Tyler Pastornicky in their lineup and they just signed Livan Hernandez as a possible starter. I can’t believe people think this team is an actual playoff contender.
Tampa Bay. Every year, people count out the Rays and it’s always hard to understand why. With lefty Matt Moore, the most experienced rookie in the majors, Tampa Bay could easily win the AL East outright in 2012. Here’s saying they will.

MLB impact players in ’12 Who will define the 2012 MLB season? Some familiar, some not-so-familiar names that will take the summer by storm Pujols shifts power back to AL There does not appear to be a runaway, surefire, can’t-miss World Series contender in either the American or National Leagues this year. To figure out which teams will play late into October,
Metro looks at a variety of impact players from both leagues that will make-or-break Fall Classic chances.

that Matsuzaka had in his first season, the Rangers could well make it three World Series appearances in a row.
FIRST BASEMAN, ANGELS
The Angels might be the most stacked team on both sides of the ball in the American League, and the acquisition of Pujols is the linchpin. But, still, the lineup behind Pujols in Los Angeles is hardly Murderer’s Row, and Pujols could easily get the Bonds treatment in his new league. How he adjusts could determine the American League pennant.
Matt Kemp CENTER FIELD, DODGERS
Do you believe in Magic? Maybe things are finally looking up for the Dodgers, who have been looking up in the National League West standings for the past few years. But they still have Kemp, who might be the best player in baseball no one knows
about. Maybe some baseball Showtime in Los Angeles. will finally make Kemp a star. Kemp batted .324 at the dish last year while driving in a career-high 126 runs with 39 homers. He finished second to Ryan Braun in the NL MVP voting.
SHORTSTOP, ROCKIES
If the NL is looking for an untainted star, it could perhaps find him in Colorado, where the All-Star shortstop is already being touted as an MVP candidate. The Rockies should be contenders in the West, and Tulo might finally be on the precipice of a monster season.
30 Tulowitzki blasted 30 homers in 2011 along with a career-high 105 RBI and a .916 OPS.
