Child shoots himself with mom’s gun A 4-year-old is in critical condition after he accidentally shot himself in the chest with a .38 caliber gun he found under his mother’s pillow, police said. The incident happened Saturday around 7 p.m. on the 6200 block of Cardiff Street in Mayfair. The child was in critical condition after surgery. No charges have been filed.

West Chester’s well-known daredevil takes his talents to canvas On exhibit at Center City gallery with photographer friends Bam Margera — reality TV personality, ex-professional skateboarder, former “Jackass” co-host and infamous West Chester resident — is making his entry into the gallery art world.

And he’s chosen Philadelphia for his debut.

“Bam Margera & Friends,” which opened Saturday evening at Center City’s James Oliver Gallery, features watercolors by Margera alongside professional photographers Geoff “Red Mohawk” Blake, Ryan Gee and Justin Muir.

Margera revealed his artistic motivations in a recent interview with ESPN. “I’d say mostly I paint hot chicks,” he said. “But other than that, I’ve painted my buddy who’s fresh out of jail and I have so many funny quotes from him.”

Gallery owner James Oliver was quick to downplay the uncultured language. “That’s just how he approaches the media,” Oliver said. “I think his style is to say off-the-wall stuff to keep things loose and entertaining. We’re a recognized and reputable gallery, and we’re willing to show him even though he doesn’t have a huge track record as a visual artist.”

Asked if it bothered him that the least experienced artist is at the top of the bill, Blake unveiled some of the gang’s characteristic levity.

State troopers visited the home of Monica Barnhart, 40, to ask her about a March 20 incident in which a motorist saw a car swerving across

both lanes of I-99 in Logan Township at high rates of speed. After calling police, the driver followed the car to Barnhart’s home and saw a woman fitting her description going inside. When police visited the residence to follow up, Barnhart allegedly stood in her doorway clad only in a shirt and underpants, reeking of alcohol. METRO/AW

Crystal Shadding, 43, died on the scene and Troy Wimberly, 38, died less than an hour later at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.

Police said they believe the homicide was drug-related, but are not sure if Shadding was a bystander or target.

No arrests have yet been made.

Occupy tents pitched at Indy Hall After a fairly quiet winter of organizing and strategizing, Occupy Philadelphia reemerged into the public consciousness with a small encampment on Independence Mall this weekend.

The issues that first drew them out — record levels of unemployment, unequal concentration of wealth and a host of socioeconomic ills — remain, participants said.

“Things are not better and they’re not going to be,” Michael Mizner said in front of the smattering of three to five tents yesterday. “Nothing’s changed to impact that decline.”

Though the movement’s core issues haven’t changed, organizers said the time out of the public spotlight gave them a chance to regroup.

“I think they spent all winter trying to figure out what the current and future agenda should be,” homeless advocate Dennis Payne, who set up the recently dismantled Camp Lib-

erty One in Port Richmond, said. “They’re back out to show they’re still here, still standing and still willing to help.”

“I think the external emergence of Occupy Philly in public spaces on a regular basis will go a long way toward affirming that,” Mizner said.

It’s unclear how long this particular occupation will last, as the group does not have a permit for the space and decided not to apply for one.

Pressure from the National Park Service seemed to be mounting yesterday. “There’s not really been any pressure [to apply for a permit], but I think as of today, it’s being turned up,” Payne said.

The $75 document would hold whoever signs it accountable for the cost of liability insurance, monitoring, cleaning up and repairing the event area.

How long federal rangers would allow them to stay is unclear.

No new permit PHILADELPHIA. Occupy Philadelphia voted Saturday to coordinate a four-day community-building conference featuring participants from across the country starting June 30 and culminating in an Occupy national gathering on Independence Mall July 4.

But the movement also voted not to apply for a permit from the Independence

National Historic Park for the event or for its current encampment.

Currently without a permit, Occupiers are not allowed to sleep on the grounds or to congregate in groups larger than 25. No tents are permitted onsite for more than 48 hours without prior approval, according to a permit application. The National Park Service did not return a message for comment. METRO/AW

Highway shooting closes Schuylkill The Schuylkill Expressway was shut down for several hours yesterday morning as police investigated an incident in which a driver was shot and killed on the highway.

State police said the victim, identified as 26-year-old Kareem El of Philadelphia, was driving a silver Buick LeSabre eastbound on I-76 around 2:50 a.m. As he reached mile marker 341 just east of the City Avenue exit, another car drove up alongside him and fired numerous shots through the passenger side.

The driver was struck, sending the car coasting until it crashed into a median. A passenger flagged down Philadelphia Police, who called medics and turned the investigation over to State Police. El, who was shot at least once in the head, was pronounced dead inside his car.

Cops: Bath salts cause closet attack PENNSYLVANIA. A Monroe County man high on bath salts forced his way into a neighbor’s home Friday, barricaded himself inside a child’s playroom and attacked the closet with a samurai sword, WFMZ-TV reported yesterday.

Bradford Cole, of Effort Township, reportedly began hallucinating that people were attacking and shooting at him after ingesting the drugs.

He ran to the house on Lakeside Drive claiming he was being chased.

Cole allegedly destroyed the playroom before stabbing through the closet, according to the report. State police said he was uncooperative and had to be tased before officers could arrest him.

The New York Times, in its article “Welfare Limits Left Poor Adrift as Recession Hit” Saturday, brought attention to an easily ignored reality: The ideological space between Democrats and Republicans can be thin enough to squeeze a welfare check through while maintaining contact at both ends.

It was, after all, revered President Bill Clinton who passed bipartisan legislation to reform the welfare system in 1996, moving away from the New Deal-era Aid to Families with Dependent Children program in favor of the unfortunately literal Temporary Assistance for Needy Families program.

Right-wing icon Ronald Reagan popularized the idea of the “welfare queen.”

Republican titans support the measure. Budget maestro Paul Ryan calls TANF “an unprecedented success.” Presidential front-runner Mitt Romney has proposed extending cuts to “all these federal programs.”

Rick Santorum even borrowed a line from the Obama playbook, arguing that the federal tough love “gave them [the poor] something that dependency doesn’t give: hope.” How’s that working out, exactly?

Not well, it turns out, though don’t go asking Obama.

The president, who seems to have banked his re-election campaign strategy on highlighting the differences between the two parties, has a mixed record on the welfare issue. Candidate Obama, on the campaign trail in 2008, touted

his role in passing the reform — though he did say he was “concerned” that it might have “disastrous results.” (Really covering all our bases, aren’t we, Obama?) “It worked better than, I think, a lot of people anticipated,” he said.

We think not, Mr. President.

But perhaps you should take it to the “roughly four million women and children” living “jobless and without cash aid” quoted by the Times.

“Today, we are ending welfare as we know it,” Clinton proclaimed in 1996. “But I hope this day will be remembered not for what it ended, but for what it began.” Indeed, today we dwell on what our vaunted bipartisanship has wrought.

Mike Wallace, the grand inquisitor of CBS’s “60 Minutes” news show who once declared there was “no such thing as an indiscreet question,” has died at the age of 93, the network said yesterday.

Wallace died on Saturday evening with his family by his side at Waveny Care Center in New Canaan, Conn., where he spent the past few years, CBS said in a statement and on its Sunday morning news broadcast.

“His extraordinary contribution as a broadcaster is immeasurable, and he has been a force within the television industry throughout its existence. His loss will be felt by all of us at CBS,” Leslie Moonves, president and CEO of CBS Corporation, said in the statement.

Wallace left his full-time role at “60 Minutes” in 2006

after 38 years and was given the title correspondent emeritus and a part-time contributor role. His last interview was with Roger Clemens, the star baseball pitcher accused of steroid use, in 2008.

Just about anyone who made news during the past six decades — in the United States, but often abroad too — had to submit to a grilling by Wallace.

In almost 40 years on “60 Minutes,” the groundbreaking investigative journalism program, he worked on some 800 reports and developed a relentless on-air style that was often more interrogation than interview.

This summer, nearly three years after the recession ended, the city of 222,209 has plans for a third round of layoffs. “We’re not seeing the recovery we want to see,� said Budget Director Steven Jenkins, who is hoping many of the 20 people will move into other jobs.

Charles F. Kiefer co-founded Innovation Solutions in 1976, a management consulting company that became a forerunner of organizational learning philosophies in business.

Now Kiefer — along with cowriters Leonard A. Schlesinger and Paul Brown — has developed a new strategy. But this one isn’t for the C-suite. Their new book, “Just Start: Take Action, Embrace Uncertainty, Create the Future,� is a message for anyone attempting a career in a field they’re passionate about.

The inspiration came in 2010, when Kiefer read Sara

What’s the best way to get started in the industry?

There are many jobs in the industry that are not at a winery: wine shops, restaurants, distribution, suppliers, et cetera. It tends to be a small family-oriented business, so developing relationships goes a long way.

Developing a background in wine helps you speak the language. Continuing education is a wonderful start [see sidebar].

If you want to be a winemaker, you’re going to have to get a degree in it or work your way up as an apprentice. Working in a tasting room is one of the best places to start.

Why does the wine industry require a special knowledge base, apart from a standard

business education?

There are more than 60,000 different wine labels out there.

There’s no other industry that can be so confusing, from a marketing and sales standpoint. Music is the only industry with more labels than wine.

Plus, it’s a regulated industry.

Each state has different rules about how it can be sold.

Know your grapes

How is the culture of the industry different from the typical business environment?

Cornell University, Fresno State University and University of California, Davis have revered programs in winemaking at the bachelor’s and master’s degree levels.

So many people want to work in the industry because of the romance associated with wine and the beauty. It doesn’t pay as much as high-tech or biotech.

But most vineyards are in the most beautiful places in the world. Lovely buildings, nice architecture. It’s a nice lifestyle.

So there’s a trade-off there.

How about the issues of keeping Planned Parenthood and equality for women when it comes to health care? President Obama, along with most Americans, agree with this — but not the GOP. Phillies look to get back to winning ways First game back for Thome Marlins in town for opener A home opener is always a special date on the calendar for any baseball fan. Apparently, it’s pretty significant for ballplayers as well.

Jim Thome is thrilled that he’ll be part of another home opener as a Phillie today against the Miami Marlins.

“That first game at home is always pretty special,” Thome said. “I remember what it was like back when I was part of the home opener when I joined the club [in 2003].”

Thome received a massive ovation when he was introduced before the Phillies played the Pittsburgh Pirates that day at Veterans Stadium.

For those who missed it, Thome was treated then like Cliff Lee is these days. The hulking slugger signed a massive deal to play for the

Phillies and the fans loved him.

“I’m really looking forward to playing at Citizens Bank Park again,” Thome said. “I have great memories.”

Jimmy Rollins has started more home openers at Citizens Bank Park than any other Phillie. J-Roll has been the shortstop during eight of a possible eight home openers.

“Opening Day in Philadelphia is always a special thing,” Rollins said. “It’s always a

great day. I’m very happy to be part of another one. It’s fun that it’s such a big deal.”

Phillies rookies Joe Savery and Freddy Galvis will experience the pomp and circumstance for the first time.

“I’ve learned to just take in all of the firsts and enjoy it,” Savery said. “Being up [in the major leagues] is more than I ever imagined. That experience [Opening Day at Citizens Bank Park] is going to be amazing.”

The Phillies began the season with a 1-0 win last week in Pittsburgh. The team dropped the next two games to the Pirates, including yesterday’s 5-4 loss after a walk-off RBI by Andrew McCutchen.

Flyers, Penguins eye bloody series

The Flyers uneventfully — save for a first-period fight — wrapped up the regular season Saturday with a 4-2 loss in Pittsburgh. Claude Giroux and Ilya Bryzgalov didn’t even suit up for the Orange and Black.

While that one was relatively tame, expect a lot more jam once the playoffs begin.

The Flyers will head right back out to Western Pennsylvania on Wednesday to play the Penguins in the first round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

“It’s going to be a bloodbath,” Scott Hartnell said.

“Wednesday will be a different animal,” Flyers coach Peter Laviolette said.

The Penguins own homeice advantage, but the Flyers are 5-1 all-time in the building.

They also finished with 25 road wins this season, which tied Boston for the NHL lead.

Too hot for street, but not for track

Sitting over there in the racetrack pits is a $140,000 Porsche 911 GT3 RS, one of the most fearsome street-legal sports cars in the world. Yet it sits unused and unloved, like a child’s castaway toy.

That’s because I’m strapped into a Porsche GT3 Cup car, which can’t be legally driven on streets. Rather it’s found competing in some of the world’s most hard-core racing events. It won this year’s Rolex 24 Hours at Day-

tona in the GT class.

This is the big time, the step up from the minors, the leap from a common band instrument to the Stradivarius, the jump from the community theater to Broadway. It’s $250,000 of pure race car.

Over the years I’ve attended every class level offered by the Porsche Sport Driving School here in Alabama. It starts with a basic sessions of one or two days, and progresses to the three-day “Masters Plus”

course. Only then are you ready for the GT3 Cup Experience. It costs $10,000 and is the equivalent of a doctoral dissertation, except a failing grade could mean pricey parts strewn across the tarmac. Students, limited to six for the two-day course, must have completed all previous advanced training.

Rolling onto the track now, I’m mostly calm and, for the first time, completely alone.

Another student has already spun the Cup car twice.

Warning: Don’t try this at home.

I finally return to the pits, take off my helmet, pull out my earplugs and get the news. I clock my fastest lap in 1:36.3. I am inordinately pleased. A very good lap driven by an instruc-

tor is closer to 1:32.

And so begins weeks of incessant day dreaming about the very unlikely possibility that one day I’ll get another shot at a 911 GT3 Cup car. BLOOMBERG
