The record-breaking heat expected to test the mettle of elite runners in today’s Boston Marathon is also prompting warnings by emergency organizations for the thousands of spectators.

“If you’re just standing on a curb for hours in that hot sun you’re just going to bake,” said Jennifer Mehigan, a spokeswoman for Boston EMS. “Take breaks from the sun.”

Besides the thousands of runners expected to run 26.2 miles today, there will be even more spectators lining the route from Hopkinton to Boston, and you don’t have to be a runner to suffer negative effects from the temperatures.

Many of those spectators enjoy their day off by drinking at outdoor house parties or at bars that have prime real estate along Boylston Street.

But officials said that water should be the drink of choice today.

Kat Powers, a spokeswoman for the American Red Cross of Eastern Massachusetts, said spectators should use common sense and heed advice “your

“Stay hydrated, dress for the heat and please wear sunblock or a broad-rimmed hat,” Powers said. “And have a buddy and keep an eye on each other and know the signs of a heatrelated emergency.”

Powers said Red Cross volunteers and personnel will be manning 24 first aid stations along the route for both runners and spectators. There will be one about every mile.

For the runners who become severely overheated, the stations will have immersion baths that are basically ice water to help cool a person’s body temperature.

Mehigan said Boston EMS will have about 100 workers on hand for the race either at strategically placed ambulances or on bicycles riding along the route.

“One thing you can never really plan on in Boston is the weather,” Mehigan said. “Every year it’s different and it even changes through out the day.”

Cops arrest two for garage fight, stabbing BOSTON. Two men were arrest-

ed early Saturday after a violent fight inside a downtown parking garage.

Javier Fernandez, 35, of Dorchester and Jose Lugo, 31, of Hyde Park, allegedly got in a fight with another man in his 20s at the Tufts Medical Center garage.

The victim, whose name was not released, was found stabbed in a stairwell about 2:40 a.m. His injuries were

not considered life-threatening.

Police were able to locate Fernandez and Lugo with the help of nearby security personnel.

Fernandez was located with the help of hospital security guards and security from a nearby nightclub helped police locate Lugo.

Both men were charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon. METRO

Alleged T tunnel tagger arrested A Boston man was arrested over the weekend for allegedly spray-painting the words “Hot,” “Sauce,” and “Love” inside an MBTA underground tunnel.

Transit Police arrested Alex Wan, 23, and charged him with malicious defacing of property and walking on railroad property.

According to Transit Police reports, officers from Northeastern University saw Wan exiting the Green Line tunnel, along the tracks, near Huntington and Massachusetts avenues.

When stopped by officers from the university, Wan said he was just going home, according to reports.

When Transit police arrived to speak to Wan, they noticed black and white paint on both of his hands and fingertips, police said.

Boston Marathon: Celebrity runners BOSTON. As a spectator, you

wouldn’t know most of the tens of thousands of runners who jog past you as you watch the Boston Marathon.

But every year there are a handful of faces that may look familiar.

That’s because the race not only attracts elite runners from across the world; it also attracts celebrities.

Actor Will Farrell ran the race in 2003 in an impressive time of just under four hours.

He’s not running it this year, according to Metro’s research, but at right we share just a few of the minor celebrities that have signed up to run the 2012 Boston Marathon.

Local fashionista’s tips on running race in style This year’s Boston Marathon is going to be a scorcher, so it is important to dress appropriately while looking good.

That's why local fashionista Dani Incropera, a senior marketer at Rue La La, has put together some tips for those attending the event.

Incropera will be hitting the streets herself to take part in the 26.2 mile trek from Hopkinton to the Hub representing “Team Red Cross” and the American Red Cross of Eastern Massachusetts, so Metro asked her how she plans on completing the tumultuous task — in high style.

fter a week in which Republicans turned Democrats’ rhetorical “War on Women” around on them by shifting the debate from the right-wing’s ubiquitous antiwomen policies into a battle over lefties’ alleged disdain for working mothers, we thought maybe this election battle had played itself out.

We weren’t the only ones.

Slate’s Dave Weigel called it for the talking point: “The ‘War on Women’ is over,” he wrote.

(Online, at least, women appeared thankful for that.) The Washington Post was less jury, more judge: “Dear media: Stop playing along with fake controversies,” they instructed.

It’s almost as if they’d never been through a presidential campaign before!

Alas, neither side of this fracas was inclined to obey the orders. Yes, much like our other legacy entanglements — think: War on Terror, War on Drugs, War in Afghanistan — this socalled war seems intent on playing itself out indefinitely.

Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner went on ABC yesterday to attack Mitt Romney’s argument that the president’s economic policies have unfairly affected women. “It’s a ridiculous argument,” he said. “It’s been largely debunked.”

that “92.3 percent of the job losses during the Obama years have been women.” This is sort of true, but also not at all: While many have lost their jobs in the recession, Obama’s stimulus saved many more.

And while Republicans oppose any and all stimulus, more government spending could have saved still more. (And if it’s true that the government reaction to the 2008 mortgage crisis spawned “The Obama Great Failed Recovery,” as conservative blog Legal Insurrection and many others allege, what was the GOP counteroption? Tax cuts for the rich? Deregulation?

ven Fox News Sunday saw a discrepancy in the Romney claim.

Host Chris Wallace called the figure a “little bit of an accounting trick,” saying “all the independent fact-finders have said it’s mis-

leading.” Romney adviser Ed Gillespie shot back: Those were “liberal economists.”

The big get in the mommy skirmishes came this weekend from NBC’s Chris Hayes, who found video of Romney arguing in January that poor stay-athome moms ought to get a job so they can “have the dignity of work.” This paints a telling contrast from the campaign’s manufactured outrage after unaffiliated Democrat operative Hilary Rosen said Ann Romney had not “worked a day in her life.” The Romney camp mobilized, using the incident to paint Dems as anti-mom; Romney adviser Eric Fehrnstrom called it the “‘kill Ann’ strategy.”

So which is it, Romneys? Is “stay-at-home mom” a respectful signifier? Or does it imply a lack of dignity?

A 30-year-old man has been arrested for trespassing at Sean “Diddy” Combs’ East Hampton mansion, where he reportedly ate the hip-hop mogul’s food, drank his liquor, tried on some of his clothes and then slept in his bed, according to TMZ.com.

Quamine Taylor, who reportedly has a history of mental illness, entered the vacant house through an unlocked basement door and was there for 24 hours before tripping an alarm.

But when police and an alarm company representative showed up, Taylor was able to convince them he had permission to be there. It wasn’t until a caretaker arrived and called the police back that Taylor was arrested. Combs’ rep had no comment.

Marathon runner has mind-‘joggling’ talent Participant will go the distance while juggling bean bags UNH senior is practicing to break a world record in May His second year at event

T

he expectation of the overbearing heat and the struggle at Heartbreak Hill are enough to worry about for most participants during the Boston Marathon.

But University of New Hampshire student Thomas Gounley wanted to add to the excitement and throw some juggling into the mix.

For the entire 26.2-mile run, Gounley will attempt to keep three bean-bags afloat during his stride to the finish line.

Known as “joggling,” running while jogging, Gounley said Monday’s Marathon challenge is just practice for a bigger event.

“I decided to train for the fastest time to joggle 50 miles.

Currently it’s eight hours, 23 minutes, which I’m attempting to break in May,” he said.

About a year and a half ago, Gounley stumbled upon a list of bizarre Guinness World Records. Joggling was one of them.

While he is running, Gounley will be shirtless with the words #MeatHouseJoggler scrawled across his chest.

Gounley, who is sponsored by the Meat House, said this will allow bystanders to interact and track his location along the route as he attempts to make it to the finish line.

“People do tweet about the odd guy in the race — and given Boston’s social media [savvy], there is no better way to test it out. It’ll be a bit of social media experiment,” he said. “I’m surprised no one has run a marathon while wearing a hashtag.”

Caroline Kilel Kenyan Caroline Kilel is the defending champ, having beaten American Desiree Davila by two seconds in a thrilling finish at last year’s Boston Marathon. But like the men’s race, the women’s race is missing some key racers due to the Olympics, including Davila.

Gebregziabher Gebremariam Gebremariam won the ING New York City Marathon in 2010 with a time of 2:08:13. He ran the Manhattan jaunt even faster last fall, but finished fourth. Gebremariam will also be attempting to land a spot on the Ethopian Olympic team today.

No, District 12 is terrible. To me, Effie drank the Kool-Aid. She’s on board because she’s in the 1 percent and she doesn’t want to give that up. I think she thinks, “Revolution would be bad. People will die and I might lose my cupcakes.” She’s not one for change. She likes the status quo. I think she shows up in District 12 disgusted, thinks that it’s dirty, wants to go home as fast as possible. I think of PR people and stylists I’ve worked with who go, “Well, I’ll make the best of a bad situation,” you know? And I think that’s Effie. The main thing about Effie is she’s superselfish. great job of satirizing that aspect of our culture — reality TV. I don’t know how much reality TV you watch ...

I don’t mind the competition shows where people actually have a talent that they bring to bear on something, like “Project Runway,” the chef ones, “Idol,” “Voice,” “The X Factor.”

But the message that we reward bad behavior — I personally don’t believe that the 15 minutes of fame is worth your dignity. And I think there are a

few people that come to them with something to offer the world, and that’s a little bit more interesting. But I don’t watch “Jersey Shore.” I know people go, “I watch it because it’s so crazy. I would never do that.” But you’re watching it and you’re giving them ratings.

Photo op: Getting your start in the wedding industry Wedding photography can be a lucrative part-time gig or a full-time business Pros tell us how to break in and what it takes to be a success

amuel Bendall works 9 to 5 as an assistant account manager for an L.A.based PR firm. But over the last five years, he has created a rewarding — and even lucrative — part-time career as a wedding photographer.

Bendall, a recent California State-Northridge grad, books about one wedding per month and grosses between $1,500 and $6,000 for each one (a fairly industry-standard rate). The work is certainly more rewarding than his former part-time jobs in the restaurant business, but building a viable wedding photography business is far more challenging than most people realize.

“I don’t do it full-time because of how much work is involved in a wedding. It’s hard to convey to people,” he explains.

“It’s more logistics than anything: meeting with the family, the wedding planner. Plus, there’s a lot on the back end of processing and packaging good images. You spend about 10 percent of your time actually at the wedding.”

For a faster job search, a few things not to do

hough many have mastered the art of quick consumerism via sameday shipping and doorstep delivery, we still struggle with expedited job shopping. In her new book, “Same-Day Résumé,” career expert Louise Kursmark offers valuable advice on minimizing time in the workless waiting room. “The key to speeding up the process is in nontraditional job search techniques,” says the author.

According to Kursmark, the best catalyst strategies involve do-nots rather than dos:

Do not be a cyber scavenger

“Not everything’s on the Web. In fact, most employers would rather not post a job online, because they’ll have to look over hundreds and hundreds of résumés and potential interviewees. They would rather ask around — staff, family, friends, business colleagues.”

Do not make an appearance

“You want to maximize your resources, one of which is time. In-person soliciting is very time consuming and usually doesn’t produce high payoffs unless your visit is specific and purposeful.”

nd, unlike other parttime jobs, wedding photography requires both passion and talent. Bendall has been a photographer since high school and avidly pursues his own artistic photo projects.

But, perhaps most importantly, the job demands an intrinsic feel for public relations.

“You can’t just be a good photographer, you have to be an incredible interpersonal communicator: Explain concisely, to difficult people, what exactly you’re doing,” says Bendall. “It’s like Oscar Wilde said: ‘If you want to tell people the truth, make them laugh, otherwise they’ll kill you.’”

A lot of people think that if they own a camera, they’re a photographer. But there’s obviously composition, thinking outside the box and timing — developing really good gut instincts. If you’re interested, [then] practice, practice, practice and see where you wind up. There are a lot of wedding photographers out there who are extremely talented. It’s important not to compare.

How much do you charge per wedding?

Between $3,000 and $5,800.

Do you hire assistants?

Yes, one per shoot. I pay a flat rate of $200 and encourage them to build their own portfolio. That’s how most people break in.

How do you find your clients?

Word of mouth has been amazing. I’m a heavy blogger, and I’m very active on social networking.

A week ago, even the most pessimistic Bruins backer would not have uttered the following: “The B’s must figure out a way to solve Braden Holtby.”

The Capitals goaltender has allowed just two goals in six periods and three extra sessions as Washington has suddenly become a defensiveminded squad.

Three things to look for as the Bruins play their first postseason road game of the 2012 playoffs tonight in D.C. (7:30, NESN):

Need for a breakout game Judging by the scores alone, it’s obvious that the Bruins offense is struggling. But it can’t all be that Holtby is just hot.

The B’s offense deserves plenty of the blame here, particularly Tyler Seguin, who was expected to step up in his second NHL postseason. Seguin went largely unnoticed in Saturday’s game despite playing 26 minutes. Bergeron has also struggled and has surprisingly lost his fair share of faceoffs in the series.

Nicklas Backstrom was the most active player on the ice Saturday afternoon as he not only netted the game-winner on a wrister, he also mixed it up with Patrice Bergeron and Tim Thomas. The Caps center was playing just his fifth game back after missing 40 games because of a concussion. Just two years ago, Backstrom was a 100-point scorer in the league. It’s scary for Bruins fans to think that he has room for improvement on the offensive end in this series.

This April, things are drastically different as Pouliot has been one of the early surprises of the 2012 postseason. He had an assist in Game 1 and a thrilling goal in Game 2. The left wing has a chance to lay down a legacy in Boston if he can become a postseason hero. The foundation for such a thing is there.

What’s up with Ray? We’ve seen this from the Celtics on numerous occasions (Shaquille O’Neal, anyone?).

They tell you one thing about an injury, and it’s actually more serious than what they say.

That seems to be the case again, this time with Ray Allen.

The C’s sharpshooter has been nagged by an ankle injury since slipping on the court against the L.A. Clippers at the start of their West Coast trip in March.

Allen missed all three games of the three-in-three-days stretch, and is questionable for the Knicks game on Tuesday.

Two outta three ain’t bad OK, so the three games came against the Raptors, Nets, and Bobcats — three bottom feeders in the NBA. Even so, to play three games in three nights is quite the toll on aging players

— as seen by the fact that Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett sat out the third game mostly for rest reasons (Pierce has a minor foot issue). After an ugly loss on Friday to the Raptors, the C’s bounced back nicely on Saturday and Sunday. Without the Big Three, they still managed to beat the Bobcats behind Rajon Rondo (20 points, 15 assists) and Avery Bradley (22 points).

Down the stretch What looked to be a grueling end-of-season schedule for the currently No. 4 seeded Celtics may not end too badly. The Knicks, who host the C’s on Tuesday, are banged up without the likes of Jeremy Lin and Amare Stoudemire. The next night, the C’s will host the Dwight Howard-less Magic, currently holding down the No. 6 spot in the Eastern Conference.
