A 50-year-old man died and four others were injured in a boating accident that occurred near Staten Island on Saturday. The boat capsized at about 6:15 p.m. just off Perth Amboy, N.J. People in passing boats called the Coast Guard to report the vessel was sinking and that people were in the frigid water. Four victims were treated for minor injuries, but a fifth, Mario Baredales of New Brunswick, died. METRO/CB

The first rape occurred on April 9 in Bed-Stuy, police said, when the suspect approached an 18-yearold woman, threatened to hit her with a hammer and then dragged her into a back alley where he raped her. Police said they arrested 19-year-old Queens Village resident Anthony Moore and are questioning him in connection with two rapes. METRO/CB

Bronx woman charged with starving dogs Agents with the New York ASPCA arrested a Bronx woman on Friday after she allegedly starved and neglected her two 7-month-old pit bulls, Cagney and Lacey. Earlier this year, ASPCA agents, who have the power to make arrests, responded to a complaint of two alarmingly
skinny dogs being kept inside the home of Gillian Irving in the Norwood section of the Bronx. Once they got to the Webster Avenue home, the agents found the dogs neglected. Irving relinquished Cagney and Lacey to the agents, and they were transported to the
ASPCA’s Bergh Memorial Animal Hospital for treatment. After being evaluated, ASPCA veterinarians determined that Cagney and Lacey had indeed been starved; Cagney weighed 16 pounds, and Lacey was only 15 pounds, according to ASPCA officials. Both pit bulls have gained 11 pounds
each since being treated at the ASPCA. Cagney now weighs 27 pounds and Lacey weighs 26.9 pounds. Both pooches are still recovering but will be available for adoption. Irving, 27, was arrested, and charged with two counts of misdemeanor animal cruelty. METRO/CB

Interest rates for Stafford loans scheduled to double come July 1 Students say they can’t afford the increase Some politicians urge a one-year extension of the lower rate College is about to get a lot more expensive. Undergrad and graduate students nationwide may face a steep hike in the interest rate on their loans this summer. Joined by a group of New York City college students, U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer pushed back yesterday against a scheduled jump that would double the interest rate from 3.4 percent to 6.8 percent starting July 1. The hike applies only to federally subsidized Stafford loans. The government reduced the interest rate in 2007, but it is scheduled to expire in July — meaning students will pay double the current rate on any Stafford loans they take out after July. Legislation Schumer supports would push off the hike for one year. “As the economy is just starting to turn the corner, we need
to do everything in our power to keep a high-quality education in New York as affordable as possible,” he said. But some say the government needs the cash from the interest rates. Extending the low rate for a year would cost the government $6 billion, according to an estimate from the Congressional Budget Office published in The New York Times. More than 250,000 students will be affected in the New York City metropolitan area, Schumer said. Students in schools across the five boroughs have Stafford loans, from 13 students at Ace Computer Training Center in Manhattan and Queens to 1,128 at Brooklyn Law School to 8,100 students at Columbia University. How do Stafford loans work? Eligible students can receive a fixed amount in Stafford loans. The government loans the students the money, and they are not expected to pay it back until six months after graduation.
‘I really can’t afford it’ Caitlin Semo, 19, a sophomore at NYU studying politics, told Metro the doubled-up interest rate would add $4,000 to the $70,000 she already has in loans.
Unlike other loans, the federal government pays the interest for the time period students are in school and for the following six months. Freshman are eligible for up to $3,500 in Stafford loans; sophomores up to $4,500, and juniors and seniors up to $5,500 for each of their last two years of school. METRO/AB

Nor’easter to bring heavy rain Heavy rains and even snow in mountainous areas is expected to pound the East Coast this week, possibly leading to downed trees, power outages and flight delays as a low pressure system from the Gulf of Mexico moves through the region, meteorologists predicted. Intense precipitation from the Nor’easter storm started yesterday, with two to four
inches of downpour expected in New York, Philadelphia and Washington, D.C. Winds of 30 to 50 miles per hour are expected on the coast. Falling rain was predicted to morph into heavy snow in western parts of New York state and Pennsylvania, as well as West Virginia. Higher elevations could see up to 12
inches of snow, the Weather Service said. That could lead to downed branches and even trees. Forecasters expect broken power lines and widespread outages in some areas. The FBI suspended their investigation into the cold-case mystery of Etan Patz during yesterday’s downpour, but vowed they will resume their search of a Prince Street basement today. Patz, 6, disappeared in 1979 on his way to the bus stop. Last week, NYPD and FBI agents blocked off a block at Prince and Wooster streets to investigate a new tip in the case. U.S. lawmakers said they expect more Secret Service employees to leave amid a widening investigation of a prostitution scandal involving agents sent to Colombia ahead of a visit by President Barack Obama. Rep. Peter King, a New York Republican who is chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee, and Rep. Elijah Cummings, the top Democrat on the Oversight and Government Reform Committee, said they expect the investigation to extend beyond the six agents who have already left. “I think we have some bad actors here,” Cummings of Maryland said during an appearance on CNN’s “State of the Union” today. “I don’t think that we judge the Secret Service by its weakest link.”

The Secret Service and Congress are investigating an incident involving agents who allegedly consorted with prostitutes at their hotel in
Cartagena, Colombia, while preparing security for Obama’s visit this month for a trade and economic summit. Six employees left the agency following the incident, which raised questions in Congress about whether it was an isolated incident or a glimpse of broader misconduct that might have put the president’s security at risk. Republican Sen. Tom Coburn of Oklahoma said he believes the prostitution scandal is an isolated incident, not evidence of agencywide problems. The misconduct was discovered after a prostitute refused to leave a Secret Service agent’s hotel because of a dispute over her fee. BLOOMBERG

Republican presidential frontrunner Mitt Romney made enemies of at least one prominent anti-gay conservative this week over his selection of openly gay Richard Grenell as a campaign spokesman. By doing so, the Romney campaign made a subtle admission: It’s not overly worried about farright fringe voters. At this point in the election, Romney et al are firmly courting the center. Grenell, a dedicated Republican who has worked with former UN ambassador (and conservative warrior) John Bolton, fought and lost a battle for legal recognition of his same-sex partner. Bryan Fisch-

er of the American Family Association — a talk radio host popular among the religious right — was crystal clear in his disappointment with Grenell’s hire this weekend. “Romney picks out & loud gay as a spokesman,” Fischer tweeted. “If personnel is policy, his message to the pro-family community: drop dead.” There may be some truth in that. Of course, Romney doesn’t want any voters — certainly no Republicans, that is
— to drop dead. But it’s also true that, regardless of what he says or whom he hires, polls show Romney carrying the right-wing, even a majority of those who have been crying fowl for months over his allegedly moderate credentials. The Santorum and Gingrich voters held out for a while; but following Santorum’s campaign suspension, the numbers bounced back well into Romney’s favor. A Gallup poll from last week found Romney holding 90 percent of Republican voters, with President Barack Obama holding 90 percent of Democrat ones. The election, these numbers say, belongs to the center. Hence the courting of independent minds and the relaxing of far-right dog whistles. For many conservatives, the most important issue at stake in November is defeating Obama. With no real remaining competition, Romney could probably claim these voters even if he came out himself. house. A car. A career. A spouse and 2.5 kids. Should you choose to live conventionally, you probably spend your days in pursuit of all of the above. Most are within your control. If you want a car, you save and buy one. If you want a spouse, you have a drink, and then meet friends of friends. But the 2.5 kids — what happens if your body can’t produce a child? Infertility is something you don’t hear a lot about, among people in their 20s, but Infertility Awareness Week aims to get more people accepting of the issue. ty, we haven’t gotten to the point where people are ready to open up.” Until society normalizes infertility, don’t expect to see people running marathons shouting “woo hoo! I’m infertile!” she warns. So why is infertility such a sensitive subject? One reason: Because it revolves around sex. “The moment someone finds out they can’t reproduce, they feel let down by their body. The way they see it is that it’s not performing the way it ‘should’ be,” explains Collura, who also believes that getting people talking about their reproductive system the way they do about sex is the only way to increase public awareness. Giuliana Rancic, the 37-

Rancic and husband Bill’s journey into parenthood and attempt at in vitro fertilization was aired on their reality TV show “Giuliana and Bill” and watched by millions of people worldwide. The show took a dramatic twist when Rancic was diagnosed with breast cancer, further jeopardizing her chances of becoming a mother.

How to cope If you’re feeling sad: The endless waiting and hoping has left you feeling irritable, lethargic and extremely sad: Write down a list of all the good things you do have in your life. This will help you visualize your strengths, and forget your weaknesses. If you’re feeling angry: The fact you can’t get pregnant makes you feel helpless and vulnerable: Don’t let this anger consume you. Aerobic exercise such as running or swimming can help relieve some of the accumulated tension. Relaxation techniques such as yoga can also help you clear your mind.
In 2010, 47.7 percent of women fell pregnant after IVF cycles.
If you’re feeling guilty: If repeated attempts at pregnancy have been unsuccessful, you may start to believe that what’s happening to you is your fault: It’s hard to accept that your body is out of your control. Acceptance is the only way to realize you’re not a failure and that you can’t go on blaming yourself.

‘I have good days and awful days’
IUI (intrauterine insemination) is the placing of sperm into a woman’s uterus during ovulation. Lower tech, less intrusive methods such as IUI are becoming increasingly popular but their success rate depends entirely on the initial cause of the infertility. Clomid is a widely prescribed and inexpensive pill helps women get their ovulation in synch. Clomid tricks the body into believing estrogen levels are low, leading to the release of more eggs. It is one of the most successful fertility drugs. Adoption can be costly and challenging in many ways and its success is hugely dependent on external factors: Should you adopt domestically or internationally? How long are you prepared to wait? Are you mentally able to consider another’s child as your own?
“You’re so young.” I hear this a lot. A subtle implication treads coyly between each word: “You’re so young ... so it should be easy for you to get pregnant.” But the truth is, for me and 7.3 million other Americans, it’s just not that easy. There’s nothing easy about infertility. What doesn’t help are the many assumptions people make: that infertility only affects older women who put their careers first; that if we only “just relax,” we’ll conceive at the drop of a hat; that we’re selfish for pursuing fertility treatments when we should “just adopt.” It’s no wonder then so many people facing infertility suffer in silence. I was 26 when I found I was infertile. Relaxing won’t reverse my disease and there’s nothing selfish about wanting to have my own children. I’m just like any other neighbor, co-worker, sister or friend out there: I’m just
infertile. I have good days and I have really awful days. So while I wait, I share my story. I talk about what it means to be infertile, how it aches and how I remain hopeful. I speak out because I’m tired of being silenced by assumptions that undermine the very real, very valid experiences of infertility patients nationwide. I speak out because I want everyone to understand what infertility is really like. I speak out to end the silence, to help erase social stigmas surrounding infertility because stigma breeds shame. I have no reason to be ashamed: I just have a disease. And if you have infertility, you have no reason to be ashamed, either. — Keiko Zoll is founder and writer of The Infertility Voice, an online empowerment resource for infertility patients.

A JOURNEY BACK TO
NEVERLAND
Based on the novel by Dave Berry and Ridley Pearson, “Peter and the Starcatcher” was written by Rick Elice (“Jersey Boys,” “The Addams Family”). For insights from Elice, visit www.metro.us/wellplayed.
Would you like to start over with a clean slate? “We were buried therefore with him through baptism unto death: that like as Christ was raised from the dead so we also might walk in newness of life..” Romans 6:4 If you are tired of life’s burdens, a guilty conscience, the weight of regret and the baggage of bad deeds – God gives you a way to start over, all new, free from the burden of past sin. Of course, one must be willing to live a new life!
In ‘Starcatcher,’ it’s fun to learn that the boy who never grew up was once an ordinary boy It would be hard to pan this ‘Peter’

ll superheroes get origin stories — so why not the flying, fighting Peter Pan? That’s the premise behind “Peter and the Starcatcher,” which opened last week on Broadway. It’s not surprising the concept piece works so well, since it shares the Great White Way with “Spider-Man” and “Wicked.” Originating at La Jolla, it was off-Broadway in 2011 before landing one year later at Brooks Atkinson Theater. Billed as “the Neverland you never knew,” the play promises a new spin on the protagonist most often imagined as an animated imp — or, for the previous generation, Mary Martin. Considering that both those references were musicals, it’s not surprising this one offers music and even songs — but it’s mostly a straight play, with lilting, alliterative dialogue reminiscent of a bedtime story. “Peter” uses a sparse set, fun costumes and inventive props to forward the plot. It relies on audience imagination to fill in the rest; for example, only a dozen actors play more than
voyage, she encounters an orphan boy (Adam Chanler-Berat) locked up in the bottom of her barge. Both must learn what they’re made of when pirates (led by Christian Borle of NBC’s “Smash”) raid the ship and everyone becomes stranded on a not-quite-deserted island.
100 characters. Many theatergoers may be out of practice, since much of today’s commercial fare would rather hit you over the head. But as you open your mind to this format, you’re able to engage with the material in a playful way that you might remember from before you broached the too-cool cusp of adolescence. Here, you’re invited to embrace silliness and laugh heartily out loud. With license to enjoy a tale of pirates, pixie dust, maneating crocs and lost orphans who overcome all odds, even solemn adults can revisit a more mature version of the magic of childhood. T. A bright ‘Future This’ The Big Pink may be best known in America as the band who supplied the main sample for the Nicki Minaj song, “Girls Fall Like Dominoes,” but their new album, “Future This,” may be a chance for them to step outside the shadow of “Pink Friday.” The latest release from the British band, which is centered around singer and guitarist Robbie Furze and synth and beats programmer Milo Cordell, is full of the characteristic huge chorus hooks that made Minaj first take notice — and should soon make the rest of the world’s ears perk up. When your 2009 song, “Dominos” became last year’s “Girls Fall Like Dominoes” single,
that must have been a great push to expose you to American audiences. How did the Nicki Minaj collaboration come about?
“Dominos” had been around in England, and it was kind of a hit in England. It bubbled away everywhere, and we got an email where our manager said to us, “There’s this guy, a producer called JR Rotem, who is writing a track for this female rapper and they’re using ‘Dominos’ as the main sample,” and we’re like, “Cool.” And we never really heard anything about it.
“F—!” It was around the time that Kanye had come out with “My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy” and all that, and we were superaware of Nicki Minaj and we thought that she was amazing.
Which is a dangerous thing to do, I think, because it can leave you in a complete no-man’sland. The people who like pop think you’re weird, and the people who like weird music think you’re pop.
That’s funny. Have you met her?
No, she doesn’t return our calls.

She’s welcome to do that anytime. We’ve actually borrowed one of her hooks. In “Dominos” now when we play it live, we sample a bit of “Super Bass” and we kind of flip it up a bit and sing “Dominos” on top.

Inviting Zen into your career path COMSTOCK
Packing it up? Just know where you’re going — then enjoy the ride.
Making a midcareer move It could be the small uptick in the economy. It could be the fact that jobs that didn’t exist before — think IT and social media managers — are ever increasing. Whatever the case, midcareer changes aren’t all that unusual anymore. While it helps to research which industries have room for crossovers, the process begins with knowing you want a fresh start. “What I have realized is how important it is to really figure out what it is that you want to do before transitioning,” explains Lauren C. Lilling, who went from finance and investment banking to opening Keep it Sweet Desserts, a catering and delivery bakery based outside New York City. “It can be a huge financial risk and very
stressful and you truly need to believe in what you’re doing.” Don’t have the cupcake itch? Consider moving into an expanding field. Career networking website LinkedIn recently teamed up with the Council of Economic Advisors to analyze industry growth from 2007 to 2011. Among the fastest-growing industries is social media, which includes positions you may see cropping up more recently on job boards, such as social media managers. Not surprisingly, IT and health care were also among the industries expected to expand, and they have plenty of room for those looking for a change. “Some of the skills required to succeed in these industries can be acquired in others,” explains Uva Coles, dean of career management services at Pierce College. “Many career changers can leverage transferable skills and experience.” JULIA WEST

What can Western business cultures learn from Asian business cultures, and vice versa?
Western business leaders are generally at a level of development characterized by rationality and short-term, Wall Street thinking — the limitations of which have become painfully obvious in the last 10 years. Asian cultures tend to take a longer view, and think more systemically. The entrepreneurial spirit is certainly alive and well in both Eastern and West-

Q&A How can a leader work toward the “flip in consciousness” that you describe in your book? You have to work with the body. One can actually feel the difference between, say, tension and extension in the body. One’s sense of self becomes larger, freer and more agile, leading to the ultimate flip from delusion to awakening. Once we experience ourselves as a part of — not apart from, fearlessness arises.

How do Zen terms like “Small Mind” and “Big Mind” apply to business leadership?
Small Mind is looking at things from an ego perspective. It’s our usual way of thinking, which is unconsciously centered on our self and our needs and fears in the situation. Big Mind is “disappearing” into the situation, becoming one with it, and using our personality to serve others. BRUCE WALSH

To fix environment, elect green leaders Thank you, Metro, for your fantastic Earth Day edition this weekend! Not only was it informative and empowering, it was also a pleasure to read. But there was one really important thing missing from your checklist of ways to go green, however: Voting for pro-environment leaders. While we can all make positive changes in our personal lives, many environmental challenges are just too great to face alone as individuals. We need environmentally minded elected officials at all levels — federal, state and city — to truly transform our world for the better. The winners of this year’s presidential, congressional and state legislative contests will decide the fate of our environment for years to come.

“Studies have found that more than half of all women report problems getting health care.” For some women, $25 may not seem like a lot of money. It’s two movie tickets or dinner with friends. For others, $25 can make the difference between whether or not they can afford to go to the doctor for an annual wellwoman exam. Studies have found that more than half of all women report problems getting health care (e.g. not filling a prescription or skip-
ping a medical test) because of cost. Thanks to the Obama health care law, many women’s preventive health services, like pap smears and mammograms, are now available without a co-pay.

If you look all over newspapers all you see is bashing of President Obama. How about we look at the fact that he is trying his best to help the lower-middle class and middle class to live a comfortable life? RE: “IF YOU WANT TO SEE AN ECONOMY WITH NO GOVERNMENT REGULATION, GO TO SOMALIA!”:
It is sad to see citizens do not know the proper role of government, especially the federal government. Scorpio Oct. 24-Nov. 22. Instead of insisting that everything go your way, you should strive to be cooperative with others. If you don’t and something goes wrong, you’ll have to accept all the blame. Sagittarius Nov. 23-Dec. 21. It’s to your advantage to tell things as they really are, without stretching the facts just to make your story more colorful. Even tiny embellishments could cause trouble. Capricorn Dec. 22-Jan. 19. Although normally you’re a pretty generous person, you might be hesitant to part with anything of value unless you are guaranteed to get back something in return. Aquarius Jan. 20-Feb. 19. You’ll only hamper your chances for success if you do something that you would later regret merely for pride’s sake. Don’t let vanity or presumption get in the way. Pisces Feb. 20-March 20. If you want to have your views respected by others, you must not be closeminded about theirs. Treat what they have to say with due consideration, and your opinions will be given the same courtesy. Aries March 21-April 19. Be hopeful about what you take on, but by the same token don’t depend on Lady Luck to do your bidding. A concerted effort on you part will be required.

Both the Yankees and Mets were rained out yesterday. The Mets, who were supposed to host the Giants yesterday afternoon will now play a singleadmission doubleheader today starting at 4:10 p.m. The Yankees were going for the sweep of the Red Sox, but will have to wait as they travel to Texas to face the red-hot Rangers beginning tonight at 7. A makeup date is to be determined.

Hagelin
Hagelin to return from suspension The return of rookie Carl Hagelin from a threegame suspension might end up being more of a necessity than an accessory. Hagelin returns tonight, but does so with Brian Boyle hitting the bench with a concussion he suffered in Game 5. Hagelin is just happy to have a chance to contribute after sitting out. “What happened, happened,” Hagelin said of the hit on Daniel Alfredsson which resulted in the suspension. “I’m going to keep playing my game. I’m just gonna go out there and work hard.” Hagelin won’t slide directly into Boyle’s line, but he will be counted on to make up some of the scoring the Rangers will lose. METRO

Amar’e looks playoff ready
The Knicks defeated the Hawks, 113-112, yesterday to keep a tenuous hold on the No. 7 seed in the East. But maybe more importantly, their big man looked playoff ready. Amar’e Stoudemire, who struggled in his first game returning from a bulging disc in his lower back, looked much more like an All Star in his second. He finished with 22 points on 9-of-13 shooting and chipped in 12 boards as well. The immediate discussion
Playoff scenario The Knicks clinched a playoff spot this weekend, but can still take anywhere from the No. 6 seed to No. 8 seed. They hold a half-game advantage on the No. 8 76ers, and would need No. 6 Orlando to lose their remaining three games, while the Knicks won their remaining three, to make it to No. 6.
after Friday’s ugly loss to the Cavaliers was whether Stoudemire could coexist with a suddenly explosive Carmelo Anthony. “Amar’e was phenomenal, Anthony told reporters after the game. “The way we played off each other. When he had it, he had it. When I had it, I had it. Anthony finished with a game-high 39 points. MARK OSBORNE
