Police ID Chinatown groper CENTER CITY. Police have identified the man accused in two groping incidents in Chinatown as 24-year-old Melvin Bulls.

On April 26, two women in separate incidents reported that a man walked up behind them and grabbed their buttocks. Police released surveillance footage from one of the assaults and received a tip from an anonymous caller who identified Bulls. An arrest warrant has been issued.

Strip search lawsuit Archbishop Charles Chaput is expected to discuss the fate of 23 suspended priests at a news conference Friday, officials said. The priests were suspended after a February 2011 grand jury indictment accused them of sexual abuse.

Local restaurateur Marc Vetri’s new school lunch initiative is getting good reviews and could soon be expanded.

Earlier this year, Vetri, the proprietor of Osteria, Vetri, and Amis, took over management of the school lunch program at the People for People Charter School on North Broad Street.

The initiative replaces the cafeteria line with family-style service where an adult sits at each table, and a young table captain, wearing a special chef’s smock, brings the food to each table. Before each meal, the chef announces the menu.

“Many studies show that there are many positive benefits from sitting together at mealtime. Lunch is now part of the curriculum. It is not free time,” said Vetri, who was named “Best Chef Mid-Atlantic” by the James Beard Foundation.

ESF Dream Camps Michael Rouse was a catalyst for the creation of the Eatiquette program by Vetri and his partner Jeff Benjamin.

“After we took over the lunches at the ESF Dream Camps, the number of children misbehaving kids after

“We used to have rectangular tables with benches, platters, plastic plates and silverware, and food made from frozen food,” Williams said.

“Now we have tables, chairs, real silverware, and fresh food except for the tomatoes in the lasagna. Much of the food is handmade. When we have steak and brisket, the students go home and brag about it to their parents.”

Metro area among worst in air quality The Philadelphia metro area was ranked among the worst in the country for air pollution, according to an annual report from the American Lung Association.

The State of the Air 2012 report looks at particle pollution, known as soot, and harmful ozone pollution, known as smog, for 277 metropolitan areas in the United States. Philadelphia ranked 16th worst for ozone and 10th worst for annual particle pollution.

Three men were arrested early yesterday morning after a robbery turned into a hostage situation in the Belmont section of West Philadelphia.

Police said the standoff occurred when a passer-by called in a robbery at Hong Heng Chinese Restaurant and Takeout on the 4200 block of Ogden Street around midnight. The caller reportedly saw the store’s lowered metal gate and heard cries. A man, his wife and their daughter, about 11 years old, were inside, according to neighbors.

Officers responding to the scene also heard crying inside the store, declared it a barricade situation and called in SWAT. After three hours of negotiations, authorities arrested three men and recovered two handguns. The hostages suffered no major injuries.

Neighbor T.J. McClendon, who lives across the street, said that he heard the commotion through the night. “I stayed in

the house and watched the helicopter overhead,” he said. “I don’t want to get involved with cops and things too much. I’m too old — I’m in my 80s.”

He said that police instructed residents to stay inside during the incident. “One of my daughters came out and they told her she better get back in the house,” he said.

The scene was still taped off late yesterday afternoon. An officer on the scene said that investigators believed a third weapon was inside.

McClendon, who frequents the takeout restaurant, complained that similar crimes plague the neighborhood and the city. “You go in a place, you think you safe and you ain’t,” he said. “No matter where you live, people come out of other places and do dirt. You can’t even stay in your house these days.”

Blind Chinese dissident Chen Guangcheng left the U.S. Embassy in Beijing on Wednesday after securing guarantees that he could live in safety with his family in China — but he appeared to quickly have second thoughts.

Under a deal described by U.S. officials, China committed to allow Chen to relocate within the country along with his family and study at a university, an outcome that would have kept him a pivotal figure in China-U.S. relations.

However, within hours of his release to a Beijing hospital and reunion with his wife, Chen gave interviews saying

he feared for his life after he learned of the way his wife had been treated — and that he now wants to leave the country.

“He wants to leave and he wants to leave as soon as possible,” a CNN reporter said on air, saying he had spoken to Chen for 15 to 20 minutes by telephone and that the activist, who opposed forced abortions in China, felt “let down” by the United States.

Earlier, U.S. officials and Chinese officials said Chen left the embassy of his own free will after days of negotiations between the two governments. U.S. officials said that

Chen wanted to remain in China and that he never asked for asylum.

Chen’s dramatic escape from house arrest and his flight to the U.S. Embassy have already made him a symbol of resistance to China’s shackles on dissent, and the deal struck by Washington and Beijing to have him remain in China would ensure he stays a test case of how tight or loose those restrictions remain.

n case it wasn’t already glaringly obvious, the Mitt Romney campaign for presidency has gone ahead and clarified an essential truth of modern U.S. politics: Gays are not welcome in the Republican party.

renell continued: “I want to thank Governor Romney for his belief in me and my abilities and his clear message to me that being openly gay was a non-issue for him and his team.�

Perhaps it’s true that Romney did believe in the strictly conservative yet gay Grenell. If so, it’s clear that Romney’s beliefs weren’t strong enough to stand up to the likes of hatepreacher Bryan Fischer — who, upon hearing of the hire, pounced on Romney’s weak-

ness with so-called true conservatives. “It appears to be a dogwhistle to the homosexual lobby,� Fischer said, “a way of saying to them ‘I’m with you, not with them.’� He took it even further: “It’s certainly not possible that there are no other potential spokesmen available, men who are experts in foreign policy and who, at the same time, honor the institution of natural marriage in their personal lives.�

The implications here are sickening. What Fischer asserts above, and what he was, through Romney’s need of his coalition, rewarded for, is this line of thinking: In the Republican party, why hire someone who happens to be gay when you can hire someone who isn’t? It’s a bigot’s version of labor law: What, are there no able-bodied straights? The only universe in which these people would consider hiring a gay person is one where he or she

ust to be clear, Fischer was not alone. In his Washington Update, Tony Perkins argued that because Romney hired a gay man, it undermines Republican leadership. (Apparently Republicans have officially come out against gays?) Dan Gainor at the Media Research Center says the fact that Romney would hire Grenell at all is a clear sign he’s not truly conservative. (All conservatives must loathe gays?)

Perhaps not all Republicans think this way. But with Romney so willing to kowtow, what difference does it make? The message is the same: Go work for someone else.

Continuing a trend, the malleable Romney was for Ric Grenell before he was against him. He did, after all, hire the openly gay former Bush staffer as his spokesman on foreign policy and national security — a first for a Republican candidate. But following push back from the far right, Grenell was left to wither on the vine.

Grenell resigned from Team Romney on Tuesday after a month of neglect, during which he was not deployed to comment on relevant issues — like the president’s antiRomney Osama ad. Romney spent that month not commenting on attacks by hateful conservatives over Grenell’s gay credentials. The more, the merrier, the Lower Lower Dens on bringing in new members and singer Jana Hunter on retreating from the solo artist spotlight When interviewing Lower Dens in Austin, Texas, last month, the band’s “Nootropics,” which came out Tuesday, had not leaked yet. This reporter asked them to describe the sound of their sophomore album as if they were talking to a parent.

“Well, Dad, I’m going to do what I want. You might not understand it, but a lot of people out there think that it’s good,” jokes bassist Geoff Graham before considering the question more seriously. “The new album is different from the first one, obviously, we have five people now and we have a lot of different instruments and we use the studio in a new way.

I think all in all, it has expanded. ... That’s been one good word to use, expansion.”

Expansion is a good word to use with Lower Dens. Although singer Jana Hunter already had a number of releases in her own name, a few years ago the chemistry with her touring lineup began to feel like a band.

“I was never really comfortable as a solo artist,” says Hunter. “I realized that I had a lot more fun playing with other people and thought that it might extend to writing as well, and it has.”

The writing process was new on “Nootropics,” too. Last year as they toured behind their debut, “Twin-Hand Movement,” they made demos of new songs in their van.

“In the van, with the advent of portable recording,” says Hunter, “a lot of the skeletal elements of the songs were written.”

What not to do in online dating So you think you’ve mastered the art of romance on the Internet? Make sure you haven’t made any of these classic Web-flirting mistakes before hitting send

s many of us have learned, online dating is a very different animal from meeting a prospective date in person.

Rather than a “come hither” stare from across the bar, it’s that first e-mail that can make or break your chances of romance. Many of us fall flat on our faces when it comes to this first entree.

That’s why a writer under the assumed name of Ouiser Boudreaux decided to create The A(n)nals of Online Dating — a site in which readers can post the worst online dating emails they’ve received to have them scored and critiqued by Boudreaux.

Occupy back in the news, but why?

your paper glorify the Occupy Wall Street movement? It costs cities millions of tax dollars to keep police on overtime to watch OWS rallies. The money could be used to pay for AIDS victims, keep libraries open and provide shelter for homeless people.

The Occupy movement pretends to be in favor of the “99 percent” yet all they accomplish is to drain cities of money that could provide vital services for residents.

League lays smack down on Vilma On the same day the NFL mourned the loss of Junior Seau, commish Roger Goodell came down hard on four Saints players involve in the team’s cash-for-hits bounty system.

The biggest hit was on stud linebacker Jonathan Vilma. Goodell suspended him without pay for the entire 2012 season.

“I never set out to intentionally hurt any player and never enticed any teammate to intentionally

hurt another player,” Vilma said. Three other Saints were disciplined, including Anthony Hargrove (suspended eight games), Will Smith (four games) and Scott Fujita (three games.)

Bucs honor Rutgers star Tampa Bay signed former Rutgers DT Eric LeGrand yesterday to a symbolic contract. LeGrand saw his career end on Oct. 16, 2010, when he suffered a spinal cord injury.

Junior Seau died of a gunshot wound yesterday after shooting himself in the chest. He was 43.

Seau’s body was found inside a bedroom in his beachfront house in Oceanside, Calif. Police are investigating it as a suicide, although there did not appear to be a note.

“All of us are deeply saddened about Junior Seau, a great player loved by teammates who also worked hard to serve his community,” NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said. “Junior and his family will remain in our thoughts.”

Seau, who spent 13 seasons with the San Diego Chargers, is considered one of the NFL’s greatest linebackers.

He racked up 1,524 tackles, 56.5 and 18 interceptions during his 20-year career. He also played for the Dolphins and Patriots before retiring after the 2009 season.

“Everyone at the Chargers is in complete shock and disbelief right now,” the Chargers said in a statement. “We ask everyone to stop what they’re
