Sure, the definition has expanded to allow for use of the Internet, but if I add a link pointing to YouTube to my professional website, do I “possess” the videos publicly available on YouTube’s website?

This is because the American definition of child pornography requires visual material depicting a minor engaging in sexually explicit conduct. Nudity alone does not amount to child pornography. In this case, there was not even nudity, just a child in diapers. The fact that someone is turned on by that is gross, but not a crime.

ore than anything, the irony here is: The closest anyone came to being involved in kiddie porn was the same person who called the FBI. It was mom’s video, that she posted online.

That single act — calling law enforcement — demonstrates that much of society has not been properly educated on the Internet before they actually use it. We enjoy the Internet, but we also must accept the risk of using it. Mom thought the Internet community would enjoy the video of her little snowflake as much as she did, so she posted it. She got her wish. It was enjoyed. Really enjoyed. Unfortunately, the pervs and predators will always be out there, no matter how hard we prosecute.

Instead of calling law enforcement, from the start, mom should have taken that video and put it in a safe place: that shoebox of videos in the garage.

Mitt Romney apologized on Thursday following revelations by the Washington Post that he was a bit of a bully back in his prep school days. The above quote was attributed to 18-year-old Romney by a former peer, who says the presidential candidate gathered a little mob to pin down another boy — one who had been teased over his “nonconformity and presumed homo-

sexuality� — and cut off his apparently inappropriate hair. “I participated in a lot of hijinks and pranks during high school,� Romney said in apology, “and some might have gone too far, and for that I apologize.�

The recalled incident does seem vicious, but we don’t think anyone should be prosecuted for the assorted cruelties of our high school days.

Though there does seem to be a line between hijinks and assault, one needn’t look nearly so far back in history to find evidence of Romney’s repugnance.

The conservative news complex, upset over the Romney bully story, took the opportunity to trot out the follies of Obama’s high school days, arguing, again, that he was never properly vetted by the

One point of contention for Ms. Palin: However much she would like to pretend that marriage is this sacred unchanged institution over multiple millenia, that’s just not the case. If she wants to return to the traditional ideal she holds so dear, she’ll be happy to submit completely to the whims of her father, and later her husband; the first will trade her like cattle, the second will surely treat her as such. Edmund Burke, in 1790, wrote of this splendid tradition: “A woman is but an animal, and an animal not of the highest order.�

For what it’s worth, Romney is also in the traditionalist camp: “3,000 years of human history shouldn’t be discarded so quickly,� he has said in describing his opposition to equal marriage rights.

It would probably be considered insensitive to his religion to point out that Mr. Romney’s family is not exactly known for its adherence to accepted marriage norms, so we’ll leave it at that.

Political columnist Jonah Goldberg found himself the subject of much Internet mockery this week for falsely padding his credentials on the jacket of his new book.

The line in question, repeated above, has been proven false. In a Pulitzer context, “nominated� refers to the top three finalists in each category. What Goldberg really was is a two-time “entrant� — something you too can be for the low price of $100.

Favorite scenes One of the most memorable scenes throughout eight seasons of scandal in the suburbs was when Susan (Teri Hatcher) got locked out of her house — naked — in Season 1. Recalling the shoot, Hatcher says, “we always start at 6 in the morning up there on Wisteria Lane on the top of Universal [Studios], the most beautiful place to work in Los Angeles. And it was a new wardrobe girl. Her name was Susan. [I say,] ‘Hi, Susan.

Nice to meet you. I’m Teri.’ [She says,] ‘Can we please take some gaffer’s tape and cover your nipples and your crotch?’ And I walk to the set, and I was in a robe, and it was going to be six hours of shooting this from every angle. It was really a

split Tom (Doug Savant) and Lynette (Felicity Huffman) up, because that relationship was so treasured and so a lot of the fans really related to it.”

Yet the beloved couple did break up in Season 8, which Huffman calls simply “upsetting.” She and Savant didn’t get to work together as much, “and working with Doug is one of my favorite things,” Huffman says. “But I think [the crumbling of the relationship rings] true and I think that’s one of the nice things about the [portrayal of the] marriage.” Happily for fans of the couple, it appears they’re on their way to reconciliation.

The pop culture impact It would be hard to imagine Bravo’s privileged-ladies-behaving-badly “Real Housewives” franchise becoming such a hit without “Desperate Housewives” paving the way.

The catfights, shocking deaths and questionable parenting that took place — in fabulous clothing, nonetheless — on Wisteria Lane drew nearly 24 million viewers in its first season.

“The show became essential watercooler fodder, particularly for women who had just

aged out of ‘Sex in the City,’” says Dwight DeWerthPallmeyer, Ph.D., who is the director of communication studies at Widener University.

“While the Wisteria Lane women were easier to identify with than the women from ‘Sex’’s Manhattan, their stories were just as exotic, involving murder, kidnapping, extortion, blackmail and other niceties of suburban living. Of course, these women were generally richer than most suburban moms, their lives more dramatic and their physiques more beautiful. But that’s the nature of television.

It entertains us by holding up models of people we could never really be.”

The (totally secret) grand finale Cherry has had a vision of the series’ final scenes in his head since the very beginning.

“As always happens with my wonderful writers, I said, ‘Well, this is what I want to do,’ and then they started adding things,” Cherry says. “It definitely got better … but the general premise has always been the same.”

Keep an eye out, too, for a cameo by Cherry himself in Sunday’s series capper.

“I’m going to do a Hitchcock,” he adds.

There are ghoulish creatures, spiders and macabre items that are destined to show up in knockoff form at a “Hot Topic” near you sometime soon. You can’t blame the guy

for sticking to what he’s good at, but it could be argued that subverting our expectations might be a good career move.

And that suggestion arises because as much as “Dark Shadows” — a retread of the 1960s and ’70s soap opera — looks, sounds and feels like Burton’s best work, it falls short of the higher benchmarks he’s hit with movies like “Edward Scissorhands” and “Batman.”

Though Johnny Depp, as the

200-year-old vampire Barnabas Collins, has some hilarious lines, the story presents numerous gaps in logic and seems to lose steam by the second third of the film. It’s touchingly obvious, in how it ends, that they were hoping for such success with this film that a sequel would be inevitable. We’re not seeing that in the cards.

The man behind the Gothic director extraordinaire Tim Burton discusses his remake of campy ’60s soap opera ‘Dark Shadows’ and draws us a sketch

Q&A. A Tim Burton exclusive

For his latest film, Tim Burton goes back to his childhood with an adaptation of “Dark Shadows,” the campy horror soap opera about the cursed Collins family, led by a 200-year-old vampire (played by Johnny Depp in the film). But Burton’s film has a stronger comic edge than the series — not that it was necessarily on purpose, he admits.

METRO: “What single image sums up ‘Dark Shadows’ for you?”

TIM BURTON: “I made a little vampire.”

After interviewing Tim Burton, the director of “Dark Shadows,” we asked him to draw something just for us.

His doodles have sold out museums worldwide, so put this page on eBay, stat.

You set “Dark Shadows” in 1972.

Who were you back then?

Well, that was a scary thing. I was at that horrible age when you’re going from a kid to a teenager. That is quite a horrible time for anybody’s life. And I think that’s one of the reasons why I responded to the show — it felt out of place, it felt weird.

It’s almost less about the show and more about the weird feeling of childhood and growing up in that era, with the music feeling strange, the clothes feeling strange. And I remember feeling it was strange then, and then going back to revisit it, it’s still strange.

Comparing the series to the film, when did you make the decision to go for a more comedic tone?

Well, never. That’s the scary thing. (laughs) I like things you can’t categorize, so I like a mixture. To me, that’s natural.

From a marketing or studio standpoint, for people who like things categorized — “I want to go see a comedy, I want to go see a drama” — it can be a bit of a problem. But for me, I like that. I never said to Johnny,

“Make this funnier.” It was just like, well, OK. He makes me kind of laugh, but I don’t know.

Dysfunctional families are a regular theme in your work. In your life, how do you try avoid that?

I don’t know if you can avoid it, you know? That’s the thing. I remember learning early on, because I didn’t get along well with my family so I’d gravitate toward other families, but then you get in and you see the dynamic, and every family’s the same.

You’ve been working a lot with writer Seth Grahame-Smith, who wrote “Dark Shadows” and “Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter,” which you’re producing.

What was your draw to him?

I read just the book proposal

for “Abraham Lincoln.” I don’t know, it was late at night, maybe I had too much to drink or whatever, but it just clicked with me, like this is the kind of movie I’d like to see. Because it reminded me of movies that I remember seeing in the ’70s, like “Blacula” or “Dr. Jekyll and Sister Hyde,” where they take something and kind of f— around with it. And it just made sense. And then when I read it, it was interesting because it’s not a joke. It kind of makes sense, really. Lincoln, you look at pictures of him the guy looked like he was up all night hunting vampires.

Esperanza Spalding isn’t about being a lone star.

Above all, the jazz singer and bassist prizes playing with other musicians and sharing the experience. That includes her special performance of Louis Armstrong’s “What a Wonderful World” at the 2012 Oscars in February, too.

“It certainly was special, but one aspect of that was it was a surprise. I went just to play bass. It was supposed to be a collective effort that Hans Zimmer imagined,” says Spalding of the musical

director. “We wanted it to be everyone just playing together. The camera didn’t show that, but that’s what I signed up for. Then I was asked to sing with the children’s choir. That was such a small part. I had played bass all night in the orchestra with

these wonderful musicians,” the Brooklyn-based artist says.

Spalding’s team-player attitude spreads to her spring tour for her fourth album, “Radio Music Society,” when her band includes almost a dozen players. Still, it was

her Oscar solo spot that gave her big buzz.

“It was really great exposure for me,” she admits. “It was great to be a part of it. I got to hang with Billy Crystal. He did an amazing job hosting; he totally nailed that singing part. He’s awesome.”

Another awards show where Spalding “got noticed” was the 2011 Grammy Awards when she beat favored winner Justin Bieber for Best New Artist. Beliebers in turn hijacked her Wikipedia page and wrote snotty comments in ALL CAPS. But Spalding brushes that off as done with.

“Ah, no one got hurt.

It was fine. I’m sure when I was younger there was someone who was my world and I would have been upset like that,” she says.

Who? She thinks and thinks, but she’s got nada.

“I suppose I was just always into music. I would obsessively go from artist to artist. But I never had posters on my wall. I never had a crush like that.” METRO

“I made my previous record with Alain Johannes,” he says.

“And after that I knew I would make the next one with him

also. Honestly, we really didn’t need anyone but him and Jack Irons, but I had a few other people stop.” Most notably Greg Dulli and Josh Homme.

Mark Lanegan is one of music’s most formidable frontmen.

Standing tall, he performs his dark blues ballads with a deep, gravelly voice and soulful, lowend snarl, constantly gripping the mic stand as if he were strangling it into submission.

And when it comes to interviews, he is just as intimidating. Notoriously vague, and downright frustrating to talk to, he is short in his answers, divulging as little as possible.

Known through the ’90s as the singer for Screaming Trees, Lanegan has become one of the most prolific survivors to rise from the ashes of grunge. Besides his seven solo records, he’s made cameos with Queens of the Stone Age, co-wrote songs with Greg Dulli and participated in unlikely collaborations with the Soulsavers and Isobel Campbell.

“They were something I really enjoyed,” he says. “Hopefully that will continue. It may not be the things I worked on before, but with God willing, something else will pop up.”

When asked how the writing process differed between “Up From Below,” the 2009 debut from Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, and their upcoming album, “Here,” singer Alex Ebert is quick to give credit to the 11 other members of his band.

“It was a little more all-togethery,” he says. “We all sat around and worked on arrangements together.”

‘Here’

Ebert may have just coined the phrase “all-togethery” onthe-spot, but it’s quite an accurate description. A few of the songs on “Here” don’t even feature a lead vocal and are more like group sing-alongs.

“As we became a band, over the last three years, doing all these radio sessions, we would sing together in an acoustic environment, really hearing each other,” says Ebert.

Like its predecessor, the album is full of fun, funky folk, but with more of a focus.

The theme of “Here” seems to be a sort of reckoning with the evils of the world and finding goodness and spirituality within one’s self.

“I don’t tend to put out stuff that has a major thematic through-line,” says Ebert. “I tend to do what my detractors would call unfocused albums.”

Detractors have also used terms like “hippies” and “cult” to describe the big band of Zeros. Ebert doesn’t mind.

“A cult is a cult until it becomes popular, and then it’s a religion,” he reasons. “We do have an ethos, I would say, so in

Not only do those videos help her remember how the new songs she is working out in concert go, but they also help her retrieve songs that she forgets how to play. “In Florida I had to go online and go to YouTube and figure out the chords,� she says of a song from her 2009 album, “Far.� “I’ve written so much stuff since then that I’ve pushed it out of my head.�

And as far as the bootlegs of songs in progress go, she says if not for those phone videos, the songs “Patron Saint� and “Open� probably wouldn’t have even made it onto her new album, “What We Saw from the Cheap Seats.� “I got lucky that it was up there, actually,� she says.

Coat the bottom of a large cast iron or nonstick frying pan with a thin layer of oil and heat over medium heat until shimmering, about 3 minutes.

Challah bread, like brioche, has an eggy richness that lends itself well to this classic breakfast preparation. While many French toast recipes use cream and an excess of sugar, this lighter version uses whole milk flecked with orange zest and a strawberry-orange topping to add flavor without being too heavy.

Dip a few slices of the bread in the milk mixture, turn to coat, and let the excess drip off.

Lay the soaked bread in a single layer in the pan and cook until browned on the bottom, about 2 to 3 minutes.

Throw in some mimosas to complete.

Ingredients

For the strawberries: 3 pints strawberries (about 1½ pounds) 1 medium orange 2 tablespoons sugar For the French toast: 1½ cups whole milk 4 large eggs 2 tablespoons sugar 2 teaspoons vanilla extract ¼ teaspoon fine salt Vegetable oil 1 (1-pound) loaf of challah or

brioche, cut widthwise into 12 (1-inch-thick) slices Powdered sugar, for serving (optional)

Directions

For the strawberries: Hull and slice the strawberries ¼ inch thick and place in a medium bowl. Finely zest the orange (you should have about 1 tablespoon). Add half of the zest to the bowl of strawberries. Set the other half aside for the French toast.

Slice ¼ inch off the top and bottom of the orange and set it flat on a work surface. Using a paring knife, follow the curve of the orange and slice off any remaining peel and white pith.

Working over the bowl of strawberries, slice between the membranes to release the segments or supremes. Squeeze the juice from the membranes, and discard the membrane and peels.

What it is: Spodee’s a fortified wine, which you likely haven’t sipped before. During the Depression, homemade wines were mixed with fruits, herbs, spices and moonshine to deliver a cheap drunk — think sangria, with less laughing.

What it tastes like: Like its ancestor, Spodee is pretty sweet — spiked wine has to be if you intend to drink it straight. You could, in theory, keep it oldschool and drink it barefoot, straight from the bottle, but Spodee is happiest as a mixer.

Jack Rose, another guitarist who lived in Kensington for many years, also frequently titled his work after the neighborhood (see 2005’s “Kensington Blues”).

Though Rose died shortly after Forsyth moved to Philadelphia, the two guitarists became friends, and Forsyth was greatly influenced by Rose’s work.

“There’s definitely a subtle tip of the hat to Jack in the title, too,” reveals Forsyth.

On his first solo album, Chris Forsyth pays homage to the ’hood that changed his perspective

Philadelphia guitarist and 2011 Pew Arts Fellow Chris Forsyth recently signed a two-album deal with the Brooklyn-based label Northern Spy. “Solar Motel,” which features a four-piece band and was recorded in Philadelphia at Jeff Zeigler’s Uniform Recordings studio, will be released later this year.

Philadelphia doesn’t have very many fairy tales. But for careerlong villain Andre Iguodala (at least locally), Thursday night’s remarkable, series-clinching win will have to do.

Iguodala swished two freethrows with 2.2 seconds remaining to give the Sixers a 7978 Game 6 win. The victory propels them to the second round of the playoffs for the first time since 2003.

Iguodala, the usual whipping boy for Philadelphia fans, shot 61.7 percent from the line during the season. On Thursday, he finished with a teamhigh 20 points, seven assists and four rebounds.

“This is for the fans. They really deserve this,” Iguodala said.

Way back in December, just after the lockout broke, the Sixers clearly stated one simple goal: Win a playoff series.

It was something that they hadn’t done since Allen Iverson was here, something that only one of their rotation players (Elton Brand) had ever ac-
