Leaders, war veterans honored fallen heroes at Memorial Day services across Philadelphia region Pennsylvania has one of nation’s largest veteran populations

Mayor Michael Nutter paid a visit to some of the city’s monuments yesterday in observance of Memorial Day, including the Vietnam War Veterans Memorial at Front and Spruce streets.

“Philadelphia, as a city, has always respected and appreciated military and public servants,” Nutter said after the ceremony as he mingled with attendees and thanked them for their service.

Because while for many civilians, Memorial Day signifies a government-sanctioned afternoon of hooky or marks the beginning of summer, for those attending yesterday’s ceremonies, forgetting is not an option.

Philadelphia-born U.S. Army Special Forces veteran Pat Clancy served in South Vietnam’s Central Highlands, a particularly fierce combat area rife with guerrilla warfare. “I have a lot of memories. I remember some friends, schoolmates,” he choked up while recalling the lost lives. “Freedom has a price, which we can never forget,” he said as tears streamed down his face. “Believe me, I honor them every day.”

More visibility needed for memorial Nutter threw his support behind the Memorial Fund Board of Directors’ plans to make the Vietnam Memorial more visible from Spruce Street, which will be accom-

panied by a campaign to educate the public about veterans’ sacrifices during one of the longest military conflicts in the nation’s history.

He also said that he’d like to increase fines for those who deface the monument.

Right now, the north side of the monument is obscured by thick shrubbery and walled off with thick granite

panels that are more than 8 feet high and 5 feet long.

The Memorial Fund Board is raising a projected $500,000 to open up the panels and landscape the park to make the Spruce Street entrance more inviting and less tempting to would-be vandals, according to officials.

Teen found murdered inside Del. barber shop

SEPTA sued by former worker for heavy lifting

DELAWARE. State police detectives are investigating a murder that occurred inside a barbershop late Saturday night into early yesterday morning.

State police were called to the Star Center Strip Mall in New Castle shortly before midnight for reports of shots fired. They found shell casings in the parking lot

PHILADELPHIA. A former SEPTA employee is suing the authority, claiming they kept him out of work and then fired him because of a disability.

The civil complaint filed earlier this year on behalf of Gary Mays, 56, claims he injured a shoulder in 2007 and could not return to work until September 2008, but SEPTA required him to stay

and the body of Airrion Yancey, 18, lying inside the DWAR Studio Barbershop and Salon.

The teen was shot in his upper body and pronounced dead at the scene.

The medical examiner will perform an autopsy to learn more about the incident.

But a vengeful woman named Irene came ashore and washed away any chances for a truly successful season. The final numbers proved underwhelming. Tourism grew just 1.5 percent in Atlantic County and 4.5 percent in Cape May County compared to 2010.

“In spite of Hurricane Irene, where most businesses lost four to five business days, we still had those modest increases,” said John Cooke,

Penn State’s ousted Spanier sues college for e-mail trail Pennsylvania State University’s former president filed suit on Friday to force the school to turn over e-mails that are relevant to its probe of the Jerry Sandusky sex abuse scandal, the Centre Daily Times newspaper reported.

Sandusky, a former Penn State assistant football coach, goes on trial next month on charges he molested 10 boys over a period of 15 years.

Trustees fired President Graham Spanier and head football coach Joe Paterno in November 2011 over the scandal.

The requested e-mails would let Spanier “refresh his

recollection significantly and allow him to assist the university fully in its investigation,” the newspaper quoted the suit filed in Pennsylvania’s Centre County Court as saying.

University trustees hired former FBI Director Louis Freeh to investigate the university’s handling of the Sandusky sex abuse scandal. That report is expected in the fall.

The e-mails in question apparently only recently surfaced, according to a letter from an attorney that is part of the Freeh team.

Fallout from the Sandusky scandal continued late last week.

Access denied Spanier’s attorneys, Vaira & Riley in Philadelphia, wrote in the filing that they had asked the university to turn over e-mails from 1998 to 2004 — but Penn State was refusing, the Centre Daily Times said in its online edition.

The e-mails are needed “especially when dealing with events which may have occurred over 10 years ago, and, in Dr. Spanier's case, well over 10,000 e-mails ago and thousands of meetings ago.”

An attorney with the Freeh team told Spanier’s attorneys that they would not be given access to the documents.

acebook’s bungled initial public offering has gone from one of the most highly anticipated stock offerings to a hot legal opportunity for lawyers on both sides of shareholder litigation.

Court battles over the fizzled IPO could run for years, as the social networking company, the banks that took it public and Nasdaq face claims that they short-changed investors.

All of this creates a growing legal headache that could pit defendant versus defendant in assigning blame for the IPO fiasco, said Jacob Frenkel, a partner at law firm Shulman Rogers Gandal Pordy & Ecker and a former enforcement lawyer with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.

“I think we should expect a lot of finger pointing,” Frenkel said. “That’s the exact reason that this is going to be such an

opportunity for law firms.”

Facebook’s IPO raised $16 billion and briefly put a $100 billion stock market value on the company. But the stock has slumped about 16 percent since the glitch-filled offering on May 18, and the legal problems are mounting.

Plaintiffs have wasted no time in suing.

Class-action firms including Robbins Geller Rudman & Dowd and Hagens Berman have sued on behalf of clients against Facebook, its officers and directors, and underwriters Morgan Stanley, JPMorgan Chase and Goldman Sachs in various federal courts.

The suits contend that investors were harmed when analysts who work for Morgan Stanley, the lead underwriter, and the other banks allegedly withheld from all but the most favored clients that they had cut projections on Facebook’s

Market makers Knight Capital Group and Citadel Securities are each claiming losses of $30 million to $35 million tied to the early trading in the IPO and they are looking to Nasdaq to compensate them.

Morgan Stanley said on May 22 that its procedures for the IPO complied with all applicable regulations.

Michael Criden, a lawyer at law firm Criden & Love in Miami, which handles broker misconduct and securities class actions for investors, said he received more than 100 phone calls just last Monday [May 21] from Facebook investors who wanted to know what their recourse was following the bungled trading.

“That’s going to be a legal boon for anyone,” Criden said.

Facebook backlash?

Daniel Gross, economic editor at Yahoo! Finance, warned that Facebook must be careful it doesn’t go the route of MySpace, which just a few years ago was extremely popular and now is rarely used.

“I think there is a general concern over the faddishness of social media sites and their sustainability,” said Gross. “Will people start to leave it for something else? Others were filled at the wrong price later on the Friday.

Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg sells 30.2 million Facebook shares at $37.58 each, for $1.13 billion. Director Peter Thiel offloads 16.8 million shares for $633 million. By the close of business that day, the shares had fallen to $31, meaning Zuckerberg saved himself $174 million by cashing in early.

Midafternoon: A Reuters report says analysts at Facebook’s lead underwriter, Morgan Stanley, received “privileged information” about Facebook’s earnings, before the share’s market debut, and didn’t share it with ordinary investors.

Later that afternoon another Reuters report says Morgan Stanley and three other underwriters, Goldman Sachs, JPMorgan and Bank of America, reduced their earnings outlook for Facebook to “strikingly similar” levels. Observers regard this lining up of earnings estimates as unusual.

That same day, Nasdaq is sued in the U.S. District Court in Manhattan over the trading problems the previous Friday.

Wednesday, May 23 A group of Facebook shareholders file a lawsuit in New York district court, alleging that key information about Facebook’s financial fortunes was “selectively disclosed” to big banks ahead of the public offering.

Facebook issues a statement saying the claims are “without merit.”

Friday, May 25 Facebook shares close at $31.91 — a drop of around 17 percent since the opening.

An unmitigated disaster — and the little guys suffer most As Facebook reels, financial experts say they have never before seen an initial public offering handled so poorly.

“The Facebook IPO has been an unmitigated disaster,” said Andrew Stoltmann, a Chicago-based securities attorney who litigates IPO cases.

“For such a high-profile IPO, it could not have been handled worse.”

And Stoltmann predicted the fallout will have long-term consequences.

“This will likely turn off retail investors for years from investing in IPOs,” he warned.

“The litigation will take years to untangle. The blame will get spread out between Facebook, the underwriters like Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley as well as NASDAQ.” Facebook’s plunging stock prices are coupled with the

fact that many people are still skeptical over whether buying stock in the social networking giant can really make people rich — the way, say, shares of Apple are doing now.

“By the time Facebook ramped up the price range and the offer size, the media was already asking questions about the firm’s potential,” said Laura Gonzalez, an assistant professor of finance and business economics at Fordham University. “Or the lack of it for that kind of expectation, given Facebook’s business model and current profitability per user.”

Others agree the pressure is now on Facebook to live up to the hype.

“Facebook is making money,” said Daniel Gross, economic editor at Yahoo! Finance. “But, can it grow into

Three investors sued Facebook Wednesday, alleging that, after the IPO, the company deliberately failed to let investors know that their quarterly and full-year revenue forecasts had been lowered.

Coming so immediately after the financial collapse of 2008 when big banks triggered a massive global recession yet few bankers were ever held accountable, the Facebook mess has touched a

nerve with regular investors.

“Apparently, after 10 years of Sarbanes-Oxley there is still room for clubby information exchanges among the few true insiders,” mused Andreas Scherer, a former executive at AOL and now managing partner at Salto Partners, a D.C.based management consultant. “Nobody has an interest in an ill-defined process that creates mistrust, public uproar and lawsuits.”

“The wounds are fresh,” agreed Gonzalez. “We are trying to leave crisis days behind ... but it turns out that some material information was leaked to big institutional investors to the detriment of other, less connected investors.”

Women voters may decide the presidential election.

Unmarried women were among Barack Obama’s most loyal supporters in 2008, turning out in droves and delivering 70 percent of their votes to him. When many of them stayed home in the 2010 midterm election, Democrats lost the House and had their Senate majority trimmed.

Now, determined to get single women back, Senate leaders are reshaping their legislative agenda, advancing a bill to bolster workers’ ability to win pay discrimination lawsuits. A similar measure was blocked

by Republicans two years ago, and proponents expect it to be rejected again, setting up a contrast between the parties over an issue that especially touches unmarried women.

They are aiming to fire up the 55 million single, divorced, separated or widowed U.S. women eligible to vote this year.

While 60 percent of all un38% married women cast ballots in 2008, just 38 percent turned out in 2010. other measures focused on insurance coverage for contraceptives and programs for domestic violence victims.

“What is really at issue is their turnout rate,” said Democratic pollster Celinda Lake.

“Unmarried younger women plummeted in the turnout in 2010, and they came into this election cycle not very inter-

While the Democrats’ legislation could appeal to a variety of women voters, regardless of marital status, single women who, on average, have lower household income than married women might pay particular attention to pocketbook measures such as the pay discrimination bill.

Frank Newport, editor-inchief of the Gallup Poll, said Democratic candidates have a stronger appeal to single women, who he said “are much more likely to support Obama.”

Newport said unpublished Gallup data from 8,000 interviews with voters April 11 to 29 showed that Obama had a six-point advantage over Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney with women voters. Among unmarried women, it was a 26-point advantage, he said. BLOOMBERG

People are buzzing about BEES — Drexel’s new department of Biodiversity, Earth and Environmental Science. The department promotes an interdisciplinary, science-based approach to studying everything from organisms to ecosystems.

The BEES program builds on offerings currently housed in the university’s biology department, as well as on the resources of the Academy of Natural Sciences, which entered a unique academic affiliation with Drexel last fall. David Velinsky, currently vice president for environmental research at the Academy, will be chairman of BEES. The new undergraduate program will emphasize hands-on learning, starting even before freshman orientation. lready a practicing career coach, Steven Sheward attended Goldsmiths University of London to add a degree in cognitive behavioral therapy to his resume. Shortly after graduating, a big idea hit him: Traditional CBT techniques could be very effective in career counseling. He soon partnered with Rhena Branch, a fellow Goldsmiths professor and co-author of “Cognitive Behavioral Therapy For Dummies.�

book, “Motivational Career Counseling and Coaching: Cognitive and Behavioral Approaches,� was released by Sage Publications last week. Psychologist Steve Sheward claims that utilizing the principles of cognitive behavioral therapy can help the unemployed find work by reducing out-of-work stress in three key areas:

She’ll work with occupational and physical therapists at Far East University, the host institution, as well as patients at the national rehabilitation center. She’ll research the kinds of equipment available to those in need and attitudes about using that equipment.

Hyon is also excited about visiting Korea because she is of Korean descent. But her parents are from Brazil, so she only has one relative there. “I speak Korean fairly well at a conversational level, but will be taking classes,� she says, focusing on interactions with patients. Since most students learn English from a fairly young age, she should be able to communicate easily with her colleagues.

Universities in Europe take a turn for the corporate

P

rofessor Mary Gallagher has been working in higher education for more than 25 years, teaching in France, Germany and Ireland. In that time, she’s witnessed a shift toward a market/consumer-based approach to college education in Europe.

In her latest book, “Academic Armageddon: An Irish Requiem for Higher Education,�

Gallagher vents her fury over this ideological shift and researches its origins — from Margaret Thatcher to the U.S. and back. “On the one hand, the level of higher education discourse in the U.S. is very high. There are so many American authors doing good books on higher ed-

ucation — more than anywhere else,� says Gallagher. “But on the other hand, I don’t think most Americans are aware that the U.S. has developed a commercialist or corporate university model that has, most unfortunately, been copied globally.�

Ireland’s state-sponsored higher education system was overhauled to move away from public control and toward a more market-focused system.

Gallagher cites the American model as the impetus for these changes, in particular the Washington, D.C.-based Advisory Group, who was contracted by the Irish government.

unfamiliar to most Americans: less public financing, low tenure rates, high numbers of adjuncts, an emphasis on student feedback and a narrowing of curricula to reflect market interests. “If education has become a commodity, if students are treated as consumers, if faculty are treated as vendors — and their performance is micromanaged — I don’t see how independent and critical thinking can survive that,� says Gallagher. “The whole idea of education as a public good is absolutely incompatible with unrestrained market rule.�

This is the message Linda Carroll and David Rosner want to get across in their book, “The Concussion Crisis: Anatomy of a Silent Epidemic.”

In recent years, stories started to surface about football players suffering lasting brain damage from multiple concussions, Carroll says.

Dr. Bill Meehan, Director of the Sports Concussion Clinic and Director of Brain Injury Research at Children’s Hospital Boston, defines a concussion as a “trauma-induced brain dysfunction.” When a person suffers a concussion, there is no structural damage to the brain and no bruising, bleeding or

According to the book, children’s brains are far more vulnerable than those of adults because their brains have not yet finished developing. Young athletes are also more susceptible

to second-impact syndrome, which is when they sustain a jolt after they’ve suffered a concussion that was not treated properly. While rare, this could lead to a lifelong disability and even death.

If concussion symptoms are noticeable (see sidebar), Dr. Meehan says the athlete should be pulled from a game immediately — even if he or she is used to playing through pain and injury. If proper treatment is administered, a full recovery is expected; but in the worst-case scenario, he says, an untreated concussion can lead to catastrophic brain injury. When a concussion occurs, activities that require concentration, like schoolwork and video games, should come to a halt. Dr. Meehan also recommends discontinuing working out and lifting weights.

Though Dr. Meehan says there’s been an increase in diagnoses, thankfully this is a problem that “in a large part, people are more aware [of].”

Adds Carroll: “We’d like people to take concussions much more seriously and to make sports as safe as possible.”

f you can’t stand the suspense, here’s the answer: The Sixers were one-hit wonders.

As presently constructed, they are no more likely to win a championship than they were last year, or the year before that.

What we just witnessed was nothing more than a beautiful mirage.

The final game was a cry from the mountaintops to blow up a team that earned the respect of a surprised city. I know, I know. How can a bunch of New York Quoted investors come into Philadelphia, revive The new basketball in eight owners need to amazing months and then purge the roster put up a sign: that brought them Fire Sale. One or two highlight-film dunks per game don’t make up for the dumb shots and idiotic turnovers that were a death knell in Game 7.

After all these years, Iguodala still can’t figure out how to make a big free throw (with one notable exception) or make a smart play. He has a million-dollar body perched on a 10-cent head.

And yet, after his emergence in the national spotlight over the past month, he and his absurdly lucrative contract are tradable.

If the Sixers make that one move and unload

Iguodala, they will be taking the next big step forward. They will be choosing the long-term success of the team over an ill-fated attempt to prolong the mirage of 2012.

The Sixers were handed a valuable lesson last weekend in Game 7.

They saw what a team with talent and leadership does when Iguodala confronted with failure.

Paul Pierce fouled out with four minutes left and Boston holding a three-point lead, and Rajon Rondo calmly stepped forward and won the game.

Is there anyone on the current Sixers roster who could emulate Rondo’s heroics? Yes, Iguodala did it one time in Chicago, but he has failed on countless other occasions. Can Jrue Holiday do it — or Lou Williams, Elton Brand, Thaddeus Young? No. And that’s why the new owners need to put up a sign outside the Wells Fargo Center: Fire Sale. No Reasonable Offer Refused.

The Sixers proved this season that they could do more than any of us thought possible, but nowhere near enough to build a real future. For that, they will need a star — someone who can deliver more than a beautiful mirage.

Now. When Roy Halladay left the game with a sore shoulder Sunday, two thoughts converged in the minds of every Phillies fan. First, we’re dead. And second, sign Cole Hamels. Please.

The injury that has the entire Delaware Valley bracing for the worst really puts into perspective this silly debate over whether Hamels is worth a seven-year contract.

Yes, he’s worth it. The Phils can’t afford to lose the one young, pressure-tested, home-grown stud pitcher in their rotation.

No one wanted to read it when I wrote two months ago that the Phillies were

not a playoff team because no one wanted to face the truth. But losing Halladay will have no bearing on the pennant race. That sad fate

was sealed when Ryan Howard and Chase Utley missed Opening Day. This team isn’t good enough, with or without Halladay.

Allowing Hamels to leave as a free agent in a few months is not about 2012, it is about 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019.

Whether the Phils can rebound from this lost year is a matter of debate, but the conversation ends the moment Hamels departs. The day he leaves (if he does) the Phillies truly are dead.

Phils GM Ruben Amaro Jr. said last week that he’s still trying to decide the team’s priorities beyond this season. Well, it’s time for him to stop pondering the imponderable and make a bold and aggressive move.

Sign Cole Hamels, at any price. The future depends on it.

Phillies ace Cliff Lee and outfielder Shane Victorino engaged in a spirited exchange after Victorino allowed a fly ball to drop for a triple last week in St. Louis.

Everybody was mum after the dugout dispute, but my money is definitely on Lee in that battle of wits.

Mike Vick vowed last week that coach Andy Reid will not be fired while the quarterback is an Eagle. OK, fine. But how much help is Vick going to be if he’s watching the game from a hospital bed? The best way for Vick to save Reid is to save himself first. Slide, Mike, slide.

The ladies man. Adding more charm to his retirement weekend was the revelation last week that Pat Burrell agreed to take a photo with an attractive female fan only if he could grab her breast while doing so. Ah, remember the good old days, when Pat the Bat didn’t have to negotiate for that kind of thing?

Allen Iverson was in town last week to inspire the Sixers.

Fleeting fame Tears were forming in Allen Iverson’s eyes as he took one final bow last week.

The fallen superstar was brought back to inspire the Sixers, and he succeeded spectacularly in that assignment. Unfortunately, he also provided a poignant reminder of the fleeting nature of sports fame.

A decade ago, he was the floor leader — a nightly thrill show unlike any we have ever experienced.

Iverson fought back tears not because of what he had, but of what he lost. He is reportedly near bankruptcy, immersed in an ugly divorce,

searching for one more chance. He has failed at several comebacks — including one here two years ago — but there is nowhere left to turn. All he knows is basketball, and his body won’t permit the magic anymore.

In the same week Iverson was enjoying his encore, Jeff Garcia resurfaced and openly campaigned for another shot on the Eagles. The fiery QB can’t shake the urge, or face the truth. Garcia has a Playboy Playmate wife and more money than he can spend, and all he wants is one more chance to play football.

Most of us once dreamed of playing in the big leagues.

Well, maybe we’re better off sitting in the stands. Because even the best dreams usually end with tears.

As they parted ways for the summer, the Sixers made one thing crystal clear: The playoff run was nice, but it’s not going to cloud future plans.

Coach Doug Collins has referred to the 20-9 start as “smoke and mirrors.” The first-round win over the Chicago Bulls wouldn’t have happened if Derrick Rose was healthy. Pushing the depleted Boston Celtics to the brink was exciting, but predictable.

Now that they have significant roster flexibility for the first time in recent memory, things are going to change.

This team is desperate for

scoring and rebounding.

“I think that we played about as close to our potential as virtually anybody this year,” said team president Rod Thorn. “I think we know that we need to get better.”

This offseason will provide plenty of avenues for roster improvement. (Dwight Howard and Deron Williams are the big names out there).

Turn to page 24 as we take a look at some burning questions moving forward for the Sixers. The NBA draft is tentatively scheduled for June 28.

Jrue Holiday had his moments in the playoff run, but is he the point guard of the future for these Sixers?

ers really want to clear up some space and go after a free agent (Kris Humphries, Chris Kaman, Kevin Garnett and Ersan Ilyasova come to mind), they might need to use the amnesty clause on Elton Brand. The rapidly declining team leader is scheduled to earn $18 million in 2012-13, the final year of his contract.

Owner Josh Harris said he’s willing to foot the amnesty bill if it’s deemed necessary.

Meanwhile, Spencer Hawes is an unrestricted free agent and Lou Williams — the Sixers’ leading scorer in the regular season — is expected to opt out of his deal, making him an unrestricted free agent. The market will decide whether they are back.

Cole Hamels got some muchdeserved run support and the Phillies took full advantage in an 8-4 road win over the New York Mets.

Hamels (8-1) surrendered four runs on seven hits and lasted eight innings to earn the victory. The young lefty won for the eighth straight time and is now tied for the major league lead in wins. Hamels, of course, is looking for a contract extension and could become a free agent after the season.

Meanwhile, the Phillies’ much-maligned offense exploded for eight runs behind the timely bat of Ty Wigginton.

The journeyman accounted for a career-high six RBIs, including the three-run homer in the ninth that iced it.

The Phillies have won five of their last six games. The team gets an encore today (7:10 p.m., CSN) at Citi Field. Joe Blanton (4-4) gets the start versus Jeremy Hefner (0-2). METRO

Halladay to see doctor Here we go again.

Another Phillies star — Roy Halladay, this time — is slated to see a doctor today after leaving Sunday’s start, just two innings in, due to a sore right shoulder. The team was still deciding where and exactly when their ace pitcher would be evaluated.

Halladay’s velocity has been down all season and the right-hander endured one of the worst outings of his career May 2, when he blew a 6-0 lead. The Phils have lost four of his five starts since then.
