A House committee delayed voting on the bill in March, but it drew 36 co-sponsors, representing what many political watchdog groups said was a significant step backward for the state’s equality movement.

Man tortured, dog slain during home invasions Police are investigating four violent home invasions in the past two days that left one man badly beaten and burned and a dog dead from a gunshot wound.

In the last incident, three men broke into a house on Friendship Street of Northeast Philadelphia yesterday and made away with tens of thousands of dollars.

Police said that a man and a woman, both 21, were sleeping together in the front bedroom of the home when they were awoken around 3:30 a.m. by three armed intruders breaking into a side window.

The men demanded money and began tying up the couple with plastic tape. As the gunman bound the male victim, he pistol-whipped him in the head and caused the gun to go off, shooting through the ceiling. The men then ransacked the residence. They took $10,000 from a dresser.

The gunmen took more than $1,000 in cash then forced the husband into the basement, where they beat him with a club and threw hot water onto his back. After the invaders were unable to get the man to tell them where they could find more valuables, they left.

No arrests have been made in any of the invasions.

Opening arguments in the child sex abuse trial of former Penn State University assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky start today, with the explosive case expected to center on the credibility of witnesses.

Eight young men are prepared to testify in Centre County Court about how Sandusky, 68, befriended and then sexually abused them as boys over a 15-year period. The men, now aged 18 to 28, will be identified publicly for the first time in court.

Auburn footballers shot dead at party

Two former Auburn University football players and another man were shot dead and three people including a current player were wounded when an argument at a pool party at an off-campus apartment complex escalated, police said yesterday.

Two of those shot to death, Edward Christian and Ladarious Phillips, both 20, played for Auburn previously. A current member of the team, Eric Mack, also 20, was wounded and admitted to East Alabama Medical Center. His condition was not released.

The third fatality was Demario Pitts, 20, police said.

Auburn Police Chief Tommy Dawson identified the suspect as 22-year-old Desmonte Leonard of Montgomery, Alabama’s capital, and said he was being sought on three counts of capital murder.

Leonard fled the scene in a white Chevrolet Caprice with two other men, who were considered “persons of interest,” Dawson said, declining to identify them. The vehicle was found abandoned in nearby Macon County.

U.S. Marshals and the FBI were aiding the investigation, Dawson told a news conference.

Police received a call reporting shots fired at 10:03 p.m. Saturday and Christian was pronounced dead at the scene. The other two men fatally shot died at the hospital.

A fifth victim was treated and released. The sixth was airlifted to the University of Alabama-Birmingham Hospital with a gunshot wound to the head, Dawson said. He was in critical condition yesterday.

“This is a tragic day for the Auburn family,” Mayor Bill Ham Jr. said. “It’s just beyond my capacity to understand. It’s senseless.”

Lee County Sheriff Jay Jones said the county, which includes Auburn, typically suffers annual homicides “in the single digits.”

“This is pretty much unprecedented,” Jones said.

How to trust your intuition W

e all have the power of intuition working through us at all times. Our intuition is a kind, loving inner voice that guides us toward positive actions and peaceful outcomes.

Often inspiration shows up as a strong gut knowing. Sometimes intuitive guidance comes through as a powerful feeling of inspiration or even a tingly sensation. We all have this inner guidance system, but many of us disconnect from it. If we want to trust our intuition we must release all disbelief and heighten our awareness of our inner voice.

How we block our intuition: The

practical world around us doesn’t support our creative capacity to connect to our inner guidance system. When we get hooked into our to-do lists and daily duties we lose track of our intuitive flow. Another block is fear. Whenever fear arises we cut off communication to our inner guide. Thoughts like “I can’t” or “there’s no way” block us from creative ideas and intuitive guidance. Then fear leads us to overthink and start future-tripping negative outcomes. All of these blocks disconnect us from our intuitive guide within.

ing these blocks helps us realign with our intuition. We must awaken a practice of tuning in to our inner voice through meditation and still-

Trust your first instinct. For one week, document the intuition that comes through after your two minutes of stillness. At the end of the week, reread what you’ve documented. It’s likely that you’ll see patterns and guidance that may not have come through without this stillness practice. Take this exercise into your day-to-day life: The more you practice listening to your intuition, the more you’ll trust its loving guidance.

A health care career may be close at hand With advances in technology and medicine, plus the growth of the elderly population, the health care job market is only as limited as your imagination.

Stephanie Donovan, faculty chair of health programs at Peirce College in Philadelphia, suggests that job seekers go beyond the norm and look into what’s known as allied health.

“These roles can be described as the supportive patient services that complement medicine and nursing,” she says. “According to the Association of Schools of Allied Health Professionals, some allied health professionals include dental hygienists, diagnostic medical sonographers, dietitians, medical technologists, occupational therapists, physical therapists and respiratory therapists.”

King Cole still without a contract extension Poll shows LA as likely suitor Dodgers players agree If the Phillies don’t sign Cole Hamels to an extension, the buzz around baseball has the Phillies’ youngest ace heading to the Los Angeles Dodgers.

An informal poll of MLB insiders by Metro has Hamels in Dodger blue. Seventy percent of the participants believe Hamels will play half of his games next season at Chavez Ravine, if the Phillies fail to give him the money and years he desires.

That’s music to the ears of Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw.

“Yeah, c’mon over,” Kershaw said. “If Cole wants to play with us, that would be great. For some people it would be weird since he’s played his whole career in

Philly but he’s from the West Coast. He’s a San Diego native.”

In an exclusive interview three years ago, Hamels noted that he rooted for the Dodgers over the Padres since the squad had a more enthusiastic fan base. Speaking of strong fan support, Hamels also expressed that he would like to remain in Philly or at least in the Northeastern corridor after his contract expires.

Kershaw believes that the money — and the Dodgers will have plenty to spend — will be the deciding factor.

“I understand what he says about playing in the Northeast,” Kershaw said. “The fans in Philly are awesome. It’s

electric every time we play in Philly. But when you’re a free agent, you usually go to who gives you the best contract.

Hopefully we can match whatever offer he receives.”

That’s if the Phils let Hamels get on the open market.

“That’s the big issue,” Kershaw said. “The ball is in the Phillies court. They have to try and sign him before he hits free agency. If they wait too long to get a deal done and let him become a free agent and lose him, then it’s their fault.

Once you become a free agent, most of the time the player doesn’t come back.”

Kershaw is correct. The lone, major free agent to return to his team during the

ing up in Sacramento, Calif. “It just wasn’t something that I did,� Worley said. “I was just into playing and I didn’t pay attention to other stuff. I’m making up for it now.�

Worley has yet to be asked by an attendant from an opposing clubhouse for his signature. “I’m fine with that,� Worley said. “Maybe that’ll happen someday. It’s not something I’m thinking about. I’m just focusing on pitching as well as I can and when I have some free time, I’ll send some balls over to get signed.�

It’s a lot easier than what fans go through. After driving out of Citizens Bank Park, a fan surprised Worley by racing three blocks to the light at Darien Street and Pattison Avenue. “Some people will do anything for an autograph,�
