Ramarley Graham, 18, was shot to death in the bathroom of his home by Officer Richard Haste in February. Police thought the teen was armed with a gun, but he was unarmed. Police suspect he may have been trying to dispose of a small amount of marijuana by flushing it down the toilet.

Wheels of misfortune NYC transit group asks NYPD to reform traffic accident investigations Say vehicular deaths are the city’s most pressing problem Man sues after wife hit, killed in Fort Greene KEVIN C DOWNS/METRO

The most deadly weapon in New York City is not a knife or even a handgun. It’s a motor vehicle. That’s what transit advocates said yesterday, revealing that more people were killed by cars in the past decade than by guns. According to transit advocacy group Transportation Alternatives, citing city data, 3,923 New Yorkers were killed in traffic from 2001 to 2010 — more than the 3,882 murdered by guns in that same time span. Transportation Alternatives argued yesterday that police should funnel resources toward combating car crashes that kill New Yorkers, the way cop crackdowns on gun violence have slowed the murder rate. “The NYPD must prioritize the crimes that hurt the most people,” the group’s director, Paul Steely White, said. Instead, the group argues,

Riders said increased L train service meant fewer people clogging the platform while waiting for the train yesterday morning.

The platforms at the Bedford Avenue L train stop were noticeably less packed than usual at 8 a.m. yesterday morning, the first weekday of the MTA’s expanded L train service. “There’s usually way more people, Brooklyn local Jarek Markocai observed. “Between 8 and 9 in the morning is always the worst. To the delight of riders, the MTA has added 16 more round trips on the L line each weekday, plus 11 more on Saturdays and seven more on Sundays. The biggest change could be noticed in train wait times: L trains now will run just under every three minutes during the morning rush hour, up from having to wait an average of three and a half minutes for the next train.

Young female voters like Ettinger, shown here in her famous “Crush on Obama video, are expected to be crucial in helping Barack win re-election this fall.

Young love fades Ettinger became known as “Obama Girl after a YouTube video of her singing a song about her love for the then-U.S. senator went viral during the 2008 presidential election. 24.5 million hits later, Ettinger is still known for her doting lyrics. “I can’t leave you alone, she

Witness accuses Sandusky of sex abuse as trial starts Former Penn State defensive coordinator branded as ‘predatory pedophile’ Could face 500-year sentence The first witness called in the Jerry Sandusky child sex abuse trial testified yesterday that the former Penn State assistant football coach treated him like “his girlfriend” when he was a young teenager, showering together and engaging in oral sex. The testimony by the 28year-old man came after jurors heard opening statements from prosecutors and the defense as the closely watched trial got under way in Pennsylvania. Europe bailout taking its toll on US markets U.S. stocks fell yesterday as Europe’s aid package for Spanish banks did little to alleviate investor concerns about the region’s finances and the slowdown in the wider global economy. Spanish bond yields rose as a bailout of up to $125 billion for the country’s struggling banks failed to quell concerns that Madrid may be locked out of funding markets and forced to seek external help. Some were also concerned that the new debt would subordinate existing bond holders. “This is a realization that Spain, while providing money for its banks, is going to add to its debt-to-GDP ratio, and it’s going to potentially subordinate some of the current Spanish sovereign debt, which does not make those bond-holders

happy,” said Paul Zemsky, head of asset allocation at ING Investment Management. “They’re borrowing more money, not doing anything about growth,” Zemsky said. “Today we’re not worried about Spain’s banking system falling off a cliff, but other than that, nothing has changed.” Investors fear a crisis in Spain would compound the currency bloc’s troubles before June 17 elections in Greece, which many think could lead to Greece’s exit from the euro zone. The worries come at a time when economies the world over are showing signs of slowing. China’s inflation, industrial output and retail sales all flagged in May. It was the second straight month of sluggish growth. REUTERS

OPEN LETTER TO MAYOR MICHAEL BLOOMBERG

June 12, 2012 Dear Mayor Bloomberg, We applaud your recent initiative to fight obesity. It’s an issue we can’t ignore. But we don’t believe restricting the size of a soda cup is the answer. We think that a better solution is to give New Yorkers more control over what they drink, not less. Did you know that New Yorkers are now making soda at home and at the office, with 2/3 fewer calories, and without high fructose corn syrup or aspartame? In fact, they’re using NYC’s finest tap water. It’s happening around the world and now it’s in New York. Here is perhaps the best part. By making their own soda and seltzer, New Yorkers are also helping the environment. Most of the 10 billion soda bottles and cans used in New York every year don’t get recycled. Like empty water bottles, they end up in Staten Island landfills and at the bottom of the Hudson River. But no more. Smarter choices for a healthier body and a healthier environment are now both possible. New York doesn’t need this legislation. Let the people choose. Sincerely,

Daniel Birnbaum

OLYMPICS HAVOC HURTS THE POOR Global Games add to the misery of the impoverished communities they were supposed to save Profits have taken precedence Learn about the quadrennial event’s dark side: From predatory landlords to mass evictions “He wanders around Westfield, dreaming about what he can’t have,” Carole Vincent says of her autistic son. “I’m not confident about finding a new place for him.” The glamor of the Olympic site’s new shopping center is as close as Ashley Vincent, 23, can get to the $15.55 billion renewal program in East London. He has just been evicted at short notice from his apartment near the site, along with three disabled housemates. His landlord has chosen to chase a fortune from short-term rentals. Demand has pushed rental prices

up to 400 percent higher around the site, and residents like Ashley lose their homes. In Newham, London’s most deprived borough, “hundreds” of local people have been evicted ahead of the Games, Anchor House shelter director Keith Fernett told Metro. Newham Council drew criticism in April over a plan to relocate 500 people to Northern England, a “pragmatic” policy which Fernett expects to see more of. The evictions have inflamed a severe housing shortage, which had already forced people into desperate conditions.

There are an estimated 10,000 living in illegal extensions in Newham, “sheds and garages are being [leased],” says Fernett. Overcrowding is severe: “We’ve seen 38 living in a house.” Sim Sekhon, director of Legal 4 Landlords eviction specialists, confirmed to Metro that business is booming, and that even the previously comfortable are being dragged down. “London is the majority of our business now. Evictions are certainly increasing in the Olympic hot spots. Landlords are cashing in on short-term [rentals] and people who have

done nothing wrong are replaced. Even the middle classes are being affected.” The Olympic legacy was supposed to solve the housing crisis and regenerate rundown areas. London Mayor Boris Johnson recently claimed 10,000 “affordable” homes would come out of the Games. But the only new housing being built in Newham is high-end, far beyond the means of its cashstrapped community. KIERON MONKS letters@metro.us

The Olympics are big business, but the downtrodden don’t tend to benefit. Complaints from residents to local government have failed, as councils say they have no power to regulate private landlords. “There is nothing to prevent soaring rents because there is no protection for tenants,” Shadow Housing Minister Jack Dromey told Metro. “The Olympics are a triumph for Britain but it’s wrong that thousands of local people are paying the price for it.”

More than 2 million people have been displaced by the last six Olympic Games, the Centre on Housing Rights and Evictions claim.

threat to the Olympics, according to the Home Office director-general of security. Last year, 15,000 people participated in the worst public disorder Britain has seen in 20 years, in which five people died and several major

cities were reduced to chaos. The potential for new unrest remains, with the U.K. back in recession, and unemployment and poverty growing. The Olympic site is located in the East end of London, which saw some of the most violent riots last year. Several activist groups are planning to target the Olympics for protests, such as the extremist Coalition of Resistance. MWN

He was on home turf and brought his mom as a date, but even still, Russell Brand couldn’t catch a break at the London premiere of “Rock of Ages.” While the comedian walked the red carpet for his new film, fans yelled that he looked like “Jesus” and a “homeless person.” Brand — like most people confined to skin-tight jeans and ornamental cowboy boots — didn’t risk getting in a fight, instead taking it as a compliment. “I’d like to play Jesus, and wasn’t he homeless for a while too?” he answered, according to U.K. newspaper The Mirror. He also admitted that his role as a rocker with a wild streak wasn’t that much of a stretch. “When I was lying on the toilet floor, I thought, ‘Hello, here we are again on my own,’” says Brand, who struggled publicly with drugs and alcohol before sobering up.

Lohan may face lawsuit Not surprisingly, the truck driver involved in a car crash with Lindsay Lohan over the weekend has hired a lawyer. According to TMZ, he claims he saw a doctor on Sunday but

would not disclose the injuries he suffered after the actress slammed into the back of his 18-wheeler. We get that it’s not easy to give Lindsay a break (especially on a slow news day), but come on — her pocket-size Porsche is in the same league as a chubby rollerblader.

Brand might have to lose the aviators for his next role.

Cruise on rocking out While Brand essentially plays some version of himself in “Rock of Ages,” professional pretty boy Tom Cruise spent a little more time in the makeup chair getting into character, and it freaked out daugh-

Kris Humphries is meeting with the FBI this week to discuss texts and e-mails from his not-girlfriend, Myla Sinanaj, reports RadarOnline. The former Mr. Kardashian believes Sinanaj is attempting to extort him after a casual relationship ended. “Myla is truly acting like woman scorned. She didn’t get what she wanted from Kris and threatened to go to the press and ruin him if he didn’t pay her off,” a source tells the site. “Kris had to go to the FBI because he truly believes that she is capable of making up

crazy lies about him. Kris will fully cooperate with the FBI and do anything that is asked of him.” Wait — this girl wants money and publicity from him after a short, questionable relationship? Kris, this might be as close as you get to a soul mate.

Todd Solondz’s legacy of losers The indie director’s latest film explores the life of a lonely man-child in the lovely New Jersey suburbs

N

o one has satirized the middle-class, Jewish suburbia of New Jersey quite like director Todd Solondz. From his first film, “Welcome to the Dollhouse” in 1995, to 2009’s film “Life During Wartime” (featuring a family who has fled New Jersey for the sunny beaches of Florida), Solondz has a knack for capturing those unremarkable, discontented lives — skewering them and then sympathizing with them from one moment to the next. Mr. Solondz’s most recent film is no different. In “Dark Horse,” Abe (Jordan Gelber) is chubby man in his mid-30s, living with his parents and working for his father’s real estate company. When Abe meets a similarly stunted, heavily narcotized woman (Selma Blair) at a wedding and consequently proposes to her, his world begins to unravel. We sat down

way I suppose one would have to say yes. I don’t really think in terms of “oh this is dark or light,” I just think about characters and stories that compel me and that excite me and move me, and see what comes of it. It’s not quite as calculated as you might think. When do you know you’ve just observed something that you want to put into a script? Solondz

with Mr. Solondz to discuss the film, man-children and moments in life that inspire him. Many describe your filmmaking as exploring the darker side of suburbia. What do you think of that description?

I don’t know. I suppose if that’s to mean that I have addressed controversial subject matter, then if it’s to be defined in that

I don’t know, it’s a mystery to me. I don’t mean to be evasive — it really is. I’ve been writing since I’m reading, so it’s not a new process for me. Things enter one’s head in unpredictable ways, but writing is about sitting down, taking a pen, and putting it to paper. Or if you work on a laptop, you know, to just start doing it and pursuing it with a certain kind of rigor. There are all sorts of interesting or tantalizing details that one observes in one’s life every time you take a walk or get on

Jordan Gelber and Donna Murphy star in “Dark Horse.”

Q&A Abe seems in line with this favorite character of the moment – the man-child — that is seen in all the Judd Apatow films. What got you interested in that? Well, I didn’t really think going into it that I was going to do a “man-child,” it just worked out that way. In some sense, I’ve had children in all my films — and so in a sense, this is just an embodiment of another child. I set out to do a boy-meets-girl movie, and that’s what happened.

the subway. But it’s really not until one starts trying to suss out the shape of a story that one begins to understand what is it that one is trying to do. Some of the humor in “Dark Horse” is derived from Abe’s love of sickly-sweet pop music. Can you talk about including that?

It was very much inspired by the sensibility of “American Idol,” the sense [that] this is a character who’s in his 30s and yet still clings to his adolescence. And that music is emblematic of adolescence — the kind of high hopes and cheerful enthusiasm and optimism as well as the kinds of heartbreak that is well-known to

teens. It seemed to be a nice counterpoint and at the same time a kind of embodiment of his own pathology. Out of all the characters you’ve created, are there any that you think you would actually enjoy being around?

Who I would enjoy having dinner with? I would certainly have a lovely dinner with Abe’s parents. And also Selma Blair’s character. I’m sure we would have a very nice evening out together. But I don’t know. I don’t know that Abe and I would have a lot to connect with. HEIDI PATALANO

The Queen Extravaganza: They are the champions Recently, Metro had the chance to ask Queen drummer Roger Taylor if he’d seen the clips of Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre performing with a representation of the late Tupac Shakur at Coachella.

This is Martel. Notice how much he looks like Freddie Mercury!

“I’ve heard a lot about those clips,” he says. “I have not seen them, but I know the technology involved.” He can probably guess where we’re going with this. “I can, I think,” counters Taylor, whose most famous collaborator, Freddie Mercury, died in 1991. So would Taylor and Queen’s still active guitarist Brian May be open to the idea of playing with a hologram? “I would not like to perform with a hologram of Freddie,” he says definitively. “Brian and [I] looked at the possibility of putting a hologram in our show in London, ‘We Will Rock You.’” Ultimately the pair decided not to use a hologram for that production or for their latest endeavor. Instead, Taylor and May are putting their efforts into the very human Queen Extravaganza, a group which includes two guitarists, a bassist,

a drummer and four vocalists, all found through an online audition search. One of the main singers, Marc Martel, has particularly moved Taylor. “I was sitting down writing something, facing away from the stage yesterday, and Mark was singing ‘Bohemian Rhapsody,’ and I had chills down my spine,” he says. “It was as if Freddie was in the room.” No hologram needed.

Lawrence-Lightfoot closes a book about closing the book D

uring recent public and radio appearances, audiences haven’t interrogated Sarah LawrenceLightfoot about her latest book, “Exit: The Endings That Set Us Free,” so much as offer their confessions to the Harvard sociology professor. The author’s latest is a collection of intimate interviews with people from all walks of life, all of whom discuss longing, leaving and letting go, and Lawrence-Lightfoot claims that even at cocktail parties, people feel compelled to share their stories of exit. Without pretension, she says the book provokes that. “When people bring the book to have me sign it, the lines take forever because everyone has to tell their story,” she laughs. “They’re telling stories that are particular to them but obviously universal — about the death of a parent or a child, losing work, divorce, bullying.” In what could be an infinitely long book on the topic of finality, Lawrence-Lightfoot narrowed four dozen stories down

BACHRACH PHOTOGRAPHERS

Lawrence-Lightfoot

to 11, according to “which held the most poignancy, particularly as they were paired one with the other and [those that], if we look through the lens of exit, allowed us to see some fundamental human experience differently.” She breaks down the encounters with her subjects — a gay activist, an Iranian ex-pat and a former priest, to name a few — into six categories: tales of finding and embracing our home, voice, freedom, wounds, yearning and grace. These abstract ideas, which

seem more in line with a selfhelp manual than a sociological survey, become solidified in each of the storyteller’s shared experiences. Lawrence-Lightfoot gleans wisdom from their exits, yet the book never solicits direct advice. “The lessons are embroidered [into the stories],” she contends. “They aren’t presented as didactic prescriptions.” Additionally, she highlights the anchoring analogies her interviewees use to describe their complex exits — like “peeling an onion,” “joining the dance,” “a merry-go-round” — mnemonic tools that resonate in their simplicity.

B

ut the aim of the narratives isn’t only that we recall and compare past endings in our own lives; it’s also to “reframe” how we perceive exits, to call attention to why it is that they’ve occurred before looking out for the next beginning. LawrenceLightfoot urges readers to attend to the moment of exit and “use [it] as a moment of reflec-

tion, as a moment of propulsion.” Being purposeful and aware of how we make even the smallest ritual exits can be helpful “as we get ourselves prepared to make the larger exits in our lives.” Finishing this book marks a momentous ending for Lawrence-Lightfoot. In its wake, she must confront an “intergenerational” exit — accepting her children’s independence while still participating in their lives — as well as how to gracefully end her four-decade career at Harvard. Like the exits her subjects recount, she anticipates that her own will be layered. “I know there will be a lot of pain and loss, as well as liberation and relief.” The book has also forced her to think about the next chapter in a literal sense. “What do you write after a book called ‘Exit?’” she asks. So long as she gives a voice to the stories we’re hungry to tell, the possibilities are endless. GINA ANGELOTTI

Tom Brady shows love for his UGGs W

e didn’t think men were into UGG boots, but apparently they are — so much so that the Australian shoe brand just launched its first UGG for Men store on Madison Avenue. The shop stocks footwear (with and without the signature shearling), outerwear, accessories and a collection of leather items for dudes. On hand at last week’s grand opening was the new face of UGG for Men, Patriots quarterback (and selfproclaimed “slipper guy”) Tom Brady, who sang to us his praises for manly UGGs. We tend to think of UGGs as women’s shoes. How did this collaboration come about?

I had the slippers for a long time, all through college. It’s a California brand — [and since] I was a California kid, I had known something about it. When [the UGG team] came to us a few years ago and said, “This is what we’re launching, do you guys wanna be a part of it?” we jumped right in. There’s so many different products. It is a cool brand, and it’s a lot of fun to be a part of something that’s really grown as much as

“At some point you just have to say, whatever you’re comfortable with doing, enjoy it.” BRADY

it has over the last few years. Where do you wear your UGGs?

I wear them all the time: to stadiums, to work. I wear them out at night with friends — not the slippers, obviously, but there’s quite a few other products that really go well at night. Especially at the football stadium: I’ve given away a lot of slippers over the years to teammates. When you walk in ... and half the team’s wearing the slippers that you gave them, it’s pretty cool. Gotta ask you about your Met Gala hairdo — it got some mixed reactions. Whose idea was it?

“People have always thought about [UGG] as a slipper line, but it’s so much more than that,” Brady says.

It was kind of my idea. Honestly, I don’t take it super seriously. I had a few friends who were really mad at me, like, “What are you doing?” [Laughs] I laugh it off. I had fun with it. It was a fun night. At some point you just have to say, “Whatever you’re comfortable with doing, enjoy it.” Will you grow your hair long again?

I don’t know, I like to keep changing it. It’s fun. Guys can do that — it’s a little easier for us than the girls. MEREDITH ENGEL

We Strive to Beat All Legitimate Written Offers Before Bringing your items to us, take them to other dealers. Have them give you legitimate offers in writing. Then bring your jewelry and written offers to one of our locations. Although no one can guarantee with certainty they are paying the highest price for an article at any particular time, we will strive to beat most legitimate written offers.

Why We Can Usually Pay More Than Other Dealers Most jewelers and dealers specialize in few items and focus on newer looking items to resell. Because they are unfamiliar with many other items including vintage jewelry, old watches, coins, flatware, etc. they tend to offer very low prices because these items are not readily saleable for them. Our company has many specialized buyers for the various classifications of items that we purchase, therefore we can usually pay more.

A Note Regarding the Up To Prices listed in this Ad The condition and rarity of an item determines its price. If an item is in excellent condition and very rare it might be worth the up to price, or even more. However, if an item is in poor condition, the value will be lower. For example, a 1927 S Quarter could be worth $7,000 in new condition or less than $20 in poor condition. The up to price reflects items of exceptional quality and rarity. Although it is unlikely you will have these items due to their extreme rarity, feel free to bring whatever items you may have and we will evaluate them free of charge.

Customer Satisfaction Most of our business comes from satisfied customers and referrals which includes their friends and families. Our showrooms are safe and private. Our staff is courteous and professional and we strive as a company to make your selling experience a pleasant one. Free Admission r No Appointment Necessary Safe & Secure r Onsite Security

Catelynn and Tyler talk ‘Teen Mom’ MTV

Since first appearing on MTV’s “16 and Pregnant,” Michiganbased duo Catelynn Lowell and Tyler Baltierra have shared the highs and lows of their decision to put their daughter Carly, now 3, up for adoption. Now the engaged twosome are back for the final season of “Teen Mom,” and they told us what we can expect from them this season and beyond. What’s on tap for this season? Catelynn: A lot of stressful

things go on. In my story, [Tyler’s dad] Butch and my mom get into a very severe thing and it’s not good. Tyler: But we also get to — Catelynn: See Carly again. We have a breakdown afterward. Tyler: That was much needed because we haven’t — Catelynn: Cried in a long time. What will your relationship with her be like in the future? Tyler: At a certain age, we’re

gonna let her make the decision: [Do] you wanna continue the visits that you’ve had with us, or do you just wanna live your life? It would be really hard for me and Catelynn if Carly decided [she was] better off not seeing us, but I think it should be her decision. Will Carly be at your wedding? Catelynn: We are hoping. We’re

gonna ask and just see. Tyler: I really want her there. I really feel that Carly’s the rea-

A lot of viewers say you’re their favorite couple. Do you feel pressure to be the perfect couple for your audience?

Gotcha, germs! Keep your baby’s environment as clean as possible during his or her first three months of life, when the immune system is still developing. Changing the eating habits of America’s youth

O

BART NAGEL

ur nation’s childhood obesity problem is really an epidemic: One in three American children are overweight or obese, according to the American Heart Association. We asked Tracie McMillan, author of “The American Way of Eating,” for ideas that are out of the (junk food) box.

[should consider] doing an item-by-item comparison between supermarket flyers and prices at the market. The general perception is that if the farmer’s market is too expensive, it’s better to save the hassle and go to the supermarket. What if there’s a way to show that the markup is literally five cents a pound at the farmers market for something that’s fresher? That kind of information isn’t out there.

How do you change bad eating habits?

This idea that we’re going to get through to people by criticizing them for the food they choose — you can be right all you want, but I don’t think anyone’s going to listen. Share what you’re excited about. That makes people open to change. How can we change the stigma of healthy eating as something that only the wealthy can afford to do?

Part of what makes eating healthily feel like it’s for elites is that elites have the money to

It’s a tall order, but experts are pushing for reform Start the process at home — how about with a family dinner tonight?

What are some key items you suggest to buy direct and fresh that fit into a small budget?

McMillan

pay someone else to do things for them. Cooking is the most important key to self-sufficiency. It’s important to know how to cook well enough so that you don’t have to rely on boxes. Hamburger Helper is actually more expensive than making it from scratch. Why not set up something in advance that’s

just as easy, cheaper and better for you? People get so stressed out that they don’t think about what they’re making. Do you fix that by making better Hamburger Helper, or do you empower people to know how to cook on their own? What are ways to encourage people with low incomes to choose to shop at farmers markets versus chain stores?

The business model of farmers markets makes it hard for working-class folks to go because their work schedules tend to be more erratic than professionals with office jobs. That said, there are matching incentive programs for people who use food stamps. Farmers

If you change the way that you cook with meat, you can afford to buy fine quality. I use meat as seasoning. I buy high-quality bacon, because it’s a great way to give a better heft to the taste of beans. Also, go to a place where they’ll sell the backs and neck of chickens, which are cheap and great for making stock. [It] will make rice and vegetables taste phenomenal and filling. And [buy] produce in season. In tomato season, you can get insane amounts of them cheap. I puree and freeze things — not everything has to be super fresh. Be strategic about what you can afford. In May, Kelly Meyer and the American Heart Association worked to create a new Teaching Garden for students at Harlem’s KIPP Infinity Charter School.

Everyone’s invited to the party RE: “PARTY LOYALTY SEEMS A BIT OUT OF WHACK”: Since

Joseph Connell misstated the Republican Party platform to make it seem like Leah Thompson’s loyalty was poorly placed, let me correct a few things. First, the Republican Party wants lower taxes for everyone, not just “the top 0.1 percent.” Did Mr. Connell forget that the Bush tax cuts that Obama extended were for everyone? Second, Republicans don’t want to “end the social safety net,” they want to change the entitlement programs to make them sustainable and reduce government waste and fraud in the social safety net. We don’t have an endless supply of money to continue paying for the entitlement

programs in their current form forever. Lastly, Republicans don’t want companies “to poison and exploit our children.” They want smart regulation, not over-regulation. Contrary to what some people believe, all regulation is not good regulation or even necessary. Even President Obama ordered a review of regulations on Jan. 18, 2011, to reduce “the costs of cumulative regulations.” Mr. Connell, at least get the facts straight before trying to disparage someone for supporting the Republican party. Tiemann is deliberately mis-

understanding the point about sweatshops. No one in their right mind would work under those conditions, unless it was the only option besides starvation. Tragically, that’s the choice facing much of the residents of many countries where Tiemann’s preferred policies are in place. Tiemann’s lack of empathy is appalling.

Don’t forget, Sunday is Father’s Day RE: “FATHERS NEED TO SUPPORT THEIR BABIES”: This is in

response to Cher Hearn’s letter about fathers needing to support their babies. There are plenty of fathers who do take care of their kids. But it’s also the case that some vindictive mothers deprive their kids’ fathers from seeing or taking care of them. They claim they’re the victim or the father walked out. Little does she know that some mothers dangle the kids and threaten the fathers. They say they can’t see their kids if they don’t get back together with them or they want more money for child support (the court takes 17 percent from the father’s paycheck). The court thinks the mother is fit to take care of the kids.

Trevi Fountain loses pieces, alarm raised for monument Several decorative pieces have fallen off the Trevi Fountain in Rome, raising the alarm that one of the eternal city’s most famous structures needs a new major restoration. Over the weekend, a few stone laurel leaves fell from the top frieze of the fountain, which marks the terminal point of one of the aqueducts that brought drinking water to ancient Rome. The basin of the fountain was figured prominently in films such as “La Dolce Vita,” “Roman Holiday” and “Three Coins in the Fountain.” Rome’s city counselor for culture asked for funds to protect the fountain from any more damage and said another full-scale restoration was needed. The last major restoration of the fountain was 20 years ago. REUTERS

Palm trees, catamarans and horses on the beach? This must be Barbados!

If you follow these simple tips, you can have a fun vacation without spending a month of your salary We suggest the all-inclusive package, but with day-trips to the swanky places

T

he phrase “budget vacation” is enough to strike fear in a traveler’s heart. But an affordable holiday in Barbados doesn’t have to sacrifice comfort, fun or even a little luxury.

Residential Resort. You might be foregoing the legendary Crane’s gorgeous rooms, but you can enjoy its restaurants, private beach, beautiful grounds and manicured pools. Add a spa treat, too. For more info, call 800-097-1794 or visit

Everyone has their favorite website for vacation bargains, but check in at JetBlue Getaways for special offers and discounts in addition to the company’s Getaways Best Price Guarantee, which promises the lowest available prices. JetBlue flies daily nonstop to Barbados from JFK. Best of all, the big, comfy seats throughout the plane mean the journey is less torturous, and you feel like you’re being treated, not cheated. Go dancing under the stars

You don’t have to spend a fortune to dine by the sea in Barbados.

Go all-inclusive Choose an all-inclusive resort and cut out the nasty post-vacation credit card bill. Going all-inclusive means that you know how much you’re going to spend up front:

Meals and drinks, even alcohol, are included, along with accommodations. There’s usually nightly entertainment, too. Almond Resorts has three Barbados properties, each with onsite restaurants, pools and a

beach just steps away. Guests can take the complimentary shuttle bus to sister resorts and use the facilities at each for no extra charge. Contact 800-755-6663 or www.almondresorts.com.

Oistins’ Friday Night Fish Fry is a cheap dinner with free dancing. Fish straight off the boat are cooked up and served at picnic-style tables. There’s the usual sweet Barbados rum punch, local Bank’s beer and rum shot shacks, too. A fish platter and a beer costs about $15. There’s music all around and pop-up dance floors. (Stay in well-lit areas, though.) At the big stage, anyone can prove his or her dancing skills — you’d better be exceptionally good, though. LINDA LABAN

Georgia on my mind Not the southern state you’re thinking of — but the Georgia on the other side of the world has just as many treasures It’s a gorgeous escape, offering a rich history with ancient villages and beautiful landscapes VANILLA SKY

Georgia is an undiscovered gem. As it’s relatively small, it’s easy to absorb its rich mix of history, culture, nature, adventure, food and wine in one trip. The Georgian countryside is simply gorgeous. The massive snow-capped Caucasus Mountains along the northern border feed raging rivers that carve steep valleys, clothed in dense forests. In the summer, Georgia’s mountains are a paradise for hikers, especially the Borjomi National Park, and the Kazbegi and Svaneti regions. There are routes for all abilities; some even challenge experts. The rivers have top-class white water rafting routes and there’s also great horse riding, mountain biking and, in the winter, skiing and snowboarding. Away from the mountains, the fertile eastern plains of

If it’s city life you seek, then the capital, Tbilisi, will not disappoint: It’s an easy-going capital that mixes modern and old, packed with monuments, museums, restaurants and bars. On the shores of the Black Sea sits Batumi, Georgia’s charming seaside party-town. The scenery is stunning and varied and the traditional food is delicious. Its fascinating history has left a treasure trove of monuments throughout the land. It is also friendly, safe, and cheap: little wonder that Georgia is finally gaining a deserved reputation as a must-visit destination.

U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan recently stated: “If we want to strengthen the American workforce, we must continue to invest in education. These investments are absolutely critical, not just for our nation’s students, teachers, and schools, but for our country’s economy.â€? Secretary Duncan has repeatedly pointed out the chronic shortage of highly skilled S.T.E.M. (science, technology, engineering and math) teachers, especially in hard-to-staff schools in rural and poor urban areas. The shortage will get even worse as baby boomers in the teaching profession retire over the next decade. There is an urgent need to ďŹ x the pipeline for recruiting high-quality, well-prepared S.T.E.M. teachers. President Obama’s 100Kin10 initiative is aimed at recruiting and preparing 100,000 world-class S.T.E.M. teachers within 10 years. Institutions of higher education need to do more to attract and prepare the next generation of S.T.E.M. educators so our children are prepared for the S.T.E.M.-related jobs of the future. New York Institute of Technology’s School of Education offers graduate programs that prepare educators to effectively integrate instructional technologies into applied learning for all students. Technology is infused in all of our graduate programs, and our students learn to leverage the power of technology to improve their effectiveness in the classroom by using it in every course. In particular, our Advanced CertiďŹ cate in S.T.E.M. Education, which is a collaborative program between the NYIT School of Education and the School of Engineering and Computing Sciences, is designed to provide teachers with the tools and experiences to bring exciting and engaging S.T.E.M. activities into their classrooms. Our children deserve well-prepared teachers and our economy desperately needs well-prepared graduates who are ready to enter the job force of tomorrow. NYIT School of Education programs are leading the way forward. For more information, go to nyit.edu/education.

Key matchups

3 Can’t miss

Kevin Durant vs. LeBron James The scoop: They probably won't be matched up on defense as much as we’d like, but these two might be the top 2 players in the league. Both will score in bunches, but which one makes the biggest shots with the game on the line? Serge Ibaka vs. Chris Bosh The scoop: The best shotblocker in the NBA versus maybe the most versatile low-post scorer. Ibaka is great at help defense, so Bosh should stick to his faceup game whenever possible. Don’t bother playing the tough guy by going right at Ibaka. If Bosh sticks to his short jumper, he’ll be fine.

Set the DVR Here’s the schedule for the Heat vs. Thunder in the NBA Finals (all games on ABC): » Game 1, Today, Miami at OKC, 9 p.m. » Game 2, Thursday, Miami at OKC, 9 p.m. » Game 3, Sunday, OKC at Miami, 8 p.m. » Game 4, June 19, OKC at Miami, 9 p.m. » Game 5, June 21, OKC at Miami, 9 p.m. » Game 6, June 24, Miami at OKC, 8 p.m. » Game 7, June 26, Miami at OKC, 9 p.m.

Russell Westbrook vs. Mario Chalmers The scoop: Two guys who came from the same draft class in 2008. There’s a reason Westbrook was a high first-rounder and Chalmers went in the second. Chalmers will make a 3pointer here and there, but Westbrook is capable of going for 30 with regularity.

WELCOME TO THE SHOW Durant, James highlight what should be epic NBA Finals Pair played against each other in offseason Both looking for elusive, first NBA title With all apologies to Boston and San Antonio, this is what everyone wanted. The fans. The commissioner. The players themselves. “It’s only right,” LeBron James said of the Heat and Thunder meeting in the NBA Finals. “It’s only right.” James is the NBA MVP, a three-time league MVP actually. On the other side stands Kevin Durant, a three-time scoring champion. They might be the two best basketball players in the world. “It’s not about Kevin and LeBron,” said Thunder coach Scott Brooks. “Individually, they’re the best players in the league. But it’s always about the Thunder against the Heat.” Sorry, coach. Even if Durant and James don’t guard each other often, this series is still very much about Kevin and LeBron. The two

‘Humbled’ to be back in NBA Finals LeBron James admitted yesterday that he let his teammates down last year. He averaged just 17.6 points against Dallas in the NBA Finals. “I’m happy and I’m humbled that I can actually be back in this position less than 12 months later and to do a better job of making more plays on a bigger stage,” James told reporters.

Thabo Sefolosha vs. Dwyane Wade The scoop: Sefolosha will have the sad duty of trying to guard Wade. Sefolosha is quickly becoming one of the NBA’s best perimeter defenders. But D-Wade is a proven NBA champion.

Quoted

“We didn’t come here to win one championship ... not two, not three, not four, not five, not six, not seven ... ” LEBRON JAMES, SHORTLY AFTER SIGNING WITH MIAMI

imagined this day in the offseason, when they competed against one another in a fourday series of workouts that they dubbed “Hell Week.” James and Durant walked away from that with a mutual respect. Now, they are set to meet again, on the biggest stage: the NBA Finals. Not even Martin Scorsese could have scripted this any better. “I envisioned it every day

we worked out,” James said. “I understood what his [Durant’s] passion was. I understood what his drive was.” James is the man everyone loves to hate. With his perceived cockiness and bravado, he’ll be picked apart each time he disappears in the fourth quarter. Meanwhile, Durant enters as the fresh face, a player very much in tune with his surroundings. And representing a small market like Oklahoma City only adds to his likeability. “The city is just so laid-back and quiet, and that’s the type of person I am and it fits me well,” Durant told reporters. “It’s just a perfect place to be.” James and the Heat are invading that sleepy town tonight (9 p.m., ABC), in Game 1 of the NBA Finals. As the eyes and ears of the hoops world turn to Oklahoma City, expect a lot of things. Just don’t expect it to be quiet. METRO

What went wrong ...

1

Burned by Bernier — Steve Bernier was a key component in the Devils' run to the Stanley Cup final. He’s one-third of the Devils’ strong fourth line that had two goals and seven points in 22 playoff games. But his first period game misconduct for boarding Rob Scuderi gave the Kings a fiveminute power play.

2

Killer penalty — The Devils had the best penalty kill during the regular season. But in a must-kill penalty, the penalty killers killed any chance that hockey would be played at the Rock Wednesday night. Dustin Brown, Jeff Carter and Trevor Lewis scored in a 2:02 span after the Bernier major.

3

Watch out! — The second period had just started and the Devils were trailing 3-0. Enter Pierre Racicot. The veteran linesman collided with Anton Volchenkov in the right faceoff circle opening a passing lane for Dustin Brown. Jeff Carter’s snap shot over Martin Brodeur made it 4-0. METRO/DG

No. 8 seed Kings win Stanley Cup for first time in franchise history Devils blown away, 6-1, in Game 6 Quick wins Conn Smythe trophy HARRY HOW/GETTY IMAGES

The 1942 Toronto Maple Leafs can rest easy. Their inconceivable comeback from 0-3 to Stanley Cup champions in the final will go unmatched for another spring as the Devils’ season ended in the Staples Center last night. The Devils were routed, 6-1, by the Kings in Game 6 of the Stanley Cup final. The Kings won the series four games to two. Jeff Carter and Trevor Lewis each scored two goals and Dustin Brown and Matt Greene added one apiece for the Kings, who won the first Cup in franchise history. Goalie Jonathan Quick made 17 saves and was named the Conn Smythe trophy winner as playoff MVP. Adam Henrique scored the Devils’ lone goal. Martin Brodeur made 19 saves. The Devils are now 3-2 in five Stanley Cup final appearances dating back to 1995. If Game 6 was the epilogue to the Devils’ dynasty, it was a wholly unfulfilling conclusion. They entered the first intermission trailing 3-0 due to power play goals off the sticks of Brown, Carter and Lewis following Steve Bernier’s game misconduct for boarding Rob Scuderi. While the Devils try to regroup from an ugly Stanley Cup Game 6 loss in the short term, they have huge questions in the long term. Two of their top stars, Martin Brodeur and Zach Parise, are both free agents this offseason. Brodeur, 40, has hinted, if not outright said, he would like to return to play for the Devils. Parise has been more silent on his future. Parise, the Devils’ captain, will turn 28 this offseason and will be desirable to many teams. He’ll likely command a contract similar to the $60-million deal Brad Richards signed with the Rangers last year. The Red Wings, Wild (he is from Minnesota) and, yes, the Rangers are all reportedly interested in the twoway player. METRO
