Pot plants found in South Philly Police discovered a major pot plant operation in South Philadelphia yesterday afternoon, according to reports, which may have included up to 300 marijuana plants. Officers were seen pulling the large green plants from a rowhouse near 12th and Reed streets. No details on arrests or charges were released by police last night.

Though at least four separate protest groups descending on Philadelphia’s Historic District will compound the chaos of the 600,000 revelers expected to attend Wawa Welcome America! festival, city officials said yesterday they did not expect a major disruption.

“It’s a very secure area,” Managing Director Rich Negrin said. “There’s a strong police presence. We have the joint operations, as we usually do. This is something we do really well – it’s business as usual for us in the city.”

Negrin said that, though there is concern about counter-demonstrations, the neighborhood is largely under federal jurisdiction. “The Philadelphia Police Department is only there when things go badly, which really hasn’t been case so far,” he said. “Beyond that, it’s about making sure people have the right to enjoy Philadelphia this week and visit our historic sites and get around safely.”

As far as Occupy’s National Gathering, which has already resulted in 27 arrests, including one last Saturday, Negrin said that both the city and protesters have benefited from lessons learned since last summer’s Dilworth Plaza occupation and subsequent eviction.

“I think what we’ve learned is the majority of folks are wellintended,” he said, noting that a sense of mutual respect has developed between police Civil Affairs officers and Occupiers.

Jobs, refinery both saved at new Philly ‘energy hub’ RIKARD LARMA/METRO

More than 800 jobs at Sunoco’s refinery in South Philadelphia will be saved under a joint partnership that will convert the East Coast’s largest refinery into an energy hub.

Sunoco will partner with global asset manager The Carlyle Group to preserve the refinery, which was scheduled to close in August as the company struggled to maintain profits. The commonwealth will also kick in grant funding that will help upgrade the facilities and create 100 to 200 new jobs and thousands of construction jobs, officials said.

The joint venture will be called Philadelphia Energy Solutions and Phil Rinaldi will serve as chief executive officer. The facility will continue to produce fuel and possibly expand into other ventures related to the Marcellus Shale.

City cabbies won’t strike after all on July Fourth Taxi Workers Alliance of Pennsylvania president Ronald Blount said yesterday that it will be business as usual for city cabs tomorrow.

The news comes days after he told several media outlets that, in response to a piece of legislation signed by the state House and Senate Sunday and submitted to Gov. Tom Corbett, drivers planned to walk off the job on July Fourth, bringing traffic to a halt.

Cabs also circled Center City Friday afternoon in a horn-honking motorcade protesting the bill, which would put 15 wheelchair-accessible taxis on the street for

It is tacked-on provisions such as these, Blount said, that are sparking opposition to the bill.

“We’re going to have a meeting with our membership this Wednesday and we’ll decide then what we’re going to do,” he said. “Whether we need to file a lawsuit against this bill or what action we need to take.”

Young duo attack man, hold up takeout Police are searching for two young men who assaulted an older worker during a robbery at a Germantown

takeout restaurant Friday.

The incident happened at 5:30 p.m. at the Chinese Restaurant on 129 W. Chelten Avenue, police said.

While the victim was at the counter, the two suspects entered the restaurant and pretended to wait for service when one of the suspects

in a new survey admitted to deliberately posting ugly pictures of their friends to social networking sites.

he first thing many of us thought when we heard there was a Spider-Man reboot afoot was, “What? Why?” Well, Marvel actually makes a good case for this new iteration to exist. We have Tobey Maguire replaced

by Andrew Garfield and Kirsten Dunst, as Mary Jane Watson, replaced by Emma Stone as Peter Parker’s lesser-known girlfriend, Gwen Stacy. Even though we only last saw Spidey five years ago in Sam Raimi’s third installment with Maguire and Dunst, Garfield and Stone use their unique charisma to make the story their own. Given that these two have been dating offscreen as well, the chemistry we see between them is powerful.

Considering the director hired to direct this Spidey, Marc Webb, was the man behind the tender indie rom-com, “(500) Days of Summer” it’s clear that this isn’t going to be a “Transformers” sort of show, where bad CGI has the starring role.

the planet can follow it.” There are some major gaps in logic and the occasional bonehead plot point (for example, The Lizard discovering who has been following him by conveniently finding a camera marked “Property of Peter Parker.”) There are, also, those bad puns shouted by a masked Spidey as he web-traps a bad-

It can be. That’s why I love being from Chicago and living in Chicago. After we had our son, we decided we wanted to go back home, because to me that’s what keeps you grounded. That’s what keeps the foundation. And then you have family there, which is what keeps something normal, at least for him. I wanted him to have as much of a normal childhood as possible, and I felt like that was the best way to do that — by going back home. And although he is always in my world and watching mommy work, and seeing

daddy wrestling — that’s different, that will always make him grow up different — if he still has that base, that foundation that we had growing up, then that, to us, is what’s important.

What advice do you have for new parents?

I remember when I first had my baby, I wanted all the guests to go home, but I was so terrified of being home alone with him. It’s natural to be terrified, but it falls into place.

Whose job is it anyway?

RE: “SOUNDING OFF ON HEALTH CARE”: Mr. St. George, I fre-

quently read your comments in Metro. While you do make some good points, the note you wrote appearing on July 2 is quite inaccurate.

I agree with your first point (it is not the president’s job to create laws, that is the task of Congress); however, the rest of your prose is a typical antifederal government rant based on how you personally believe our government is supposed to govern.

ACA is not unconstitutional. The Supreme Court ruled it did not violate the Constitution, hence the law is constitutional. The U.S. Federal Government has been involved in health care for nearly a century. You seem to

be perpetuating a state’s rights argument that was settled when we abandoned the Articles of Confederation, and then settled again during the Civil War. I have a history degree, and have worked in the health care industry for much of my life.

Most of your arguments are based on conjecture, rather than substance. Also: Romney stated he would “repeal Obamacare on day one,” which, as president, he would not have the power to do (again, a congressional task).

The archeologists and architects kept the building’s original use in mind when designing the hotel — incorporating clear glass, pools and open spaces while allowing the adjacent church of St. Francis to be seen from almost any public area of the hotel. Boston, Massachusetts The looming gray stone facade of the Liberty Hotel is slightly ominous, because although it’s now a popular playground for adults, it was once home to the Charles Street Jail. The enormous atrium is beautifully preserved, the lighting fixtures providing a modern aesthetic with a historical slant. The architecture of the former jail has been brilliantly reconceived as an urban onestop shop: The nightclub is in the former “drunk tank,” cocktail areas occupy the surviving catwalks and two different eateries can be found in rooms with original jail cell details. And it’s also right by the Red Line subway line.

Devil of a time: Flyers still in mix for Parise

Waiting is the hardest part.

Keep checking social media. Keep scrolling the internet. Zach Parise will be making a decision soon on where he’ll be hanging his skates next season.

How soon? Well, no one is positive. Parise is setting no timetable or deadline. “It’s such a long-term, important decision, you have to make sure you look at everything,� Parise told reporters.

Parise, the NHL’s most prized free agent, told reporters Monday that he wanted to fly home to Minnesota and consult his family before

announcing anything. He has narrowed his list to five teams: the Devils, Wild, Penguins, Blackhawks, Red Wings and Flyers.

The Orange and Black have reportedly offered a 10year contract worth more than $100 million. The Flyers

have also made an offer for All-Star defenseman Ryan Suter.

Parise, of course, helped the Devils knock the Flyers out of the Stanley Cup playoffs. He scored eight goals (15 points) in New Jersey’s run.

I’ll figure it out since I like to eat.�
