Potato peeler stealer caught, police say A Pittsburgh man allegedly kicked in the door of a woman’s apartment while drunk early yesterday morning and stole utensils from her dishwasher, along with a small dog, according to published reports. Garrett Stauber, 24, allegedly stole a potato peeler and kitchen knife from the woman, then grabbed her dog.

The City of Philadelphia and the Center City District announced yesterday that, for the first time, Philly will participate in Fashion’s Night Out on Sept. 6. The event began in New York City three years ago as a collaboration between Vogue Magazine and the Council of Fashion Designers of America, and has since expanded to include 250 participating cities in more than 18 countries.

“It was designed to restore confidence in the creative economy and stimulate the growth of the retail industry in the midst of a great economic crisis,” Mayor Michael Nutter said at a press conference yesterday afternoon. “Philadelphia is now able to show the world we are a city that’s ready to assume its rightful place among the fashion capitals of the world. Whether it’s New York or Paris or London or Milan, we are a city of creative ingenuity and entrepreneurship.”

Philadelphia’s Fashion Night Out will serve as the official preview event to The Philadelphia Collection, a weeklong series that kicks off Sept. 13 and encompasses nearly 75 fashion events, from large-scale runway presentations to trunk shows and panel discussions.

Random Acts of Fashion, a social media-driven collection of interactive style events, will also make a return with events such as “Ambush Makeovers” and “Remote Red Carpet,” in which citizens will have the opportunity to pose in front of a Philadelphia Collection step and repeat backdrop, which will make surprise appearances throughout the city.

“The community building impact of The Philadelphia Collection on our fashion industry led to growing consumer awareness of our creative fashion community and an increased consumer awareness brought new shoppers into the store,” City Rep. Melanie Johnson said while reviewing the progress the event has made since it was founded in 2010.

“And that’s what it’s about, highlighting what we have here in Philadelphia.”

Philly accolades September 2010. The Philadelphia Collection first launched as a partnership between the Office of the City Representative, the Center City District and the Philadelphia Retail and Marketing Alliance.

December 2010. Forbes.com named Philadelphia one of the 10 best shopping cities in America.

October 2011. Travel + Leisure, in its annual online “America’s Favorite Cities” reader survey, ranked Philadelphia as No.1 for culture, up from No. 30 in 2010.

Fall 2011. British fashion retailers Jack Wills, Dr. Marten and Barbour opened locations on Walnut Street, along with Free People and Athleta.

Brooks Brothers and Club Monaco renovated their Philadelphia stores and Swarovski debuted a second Center City location. Intermix is slated to open this coming fall.

June 2011. Shermans Travel Magazine placed Philadelphia on an international list of the top 10 shopping cities on the rise.

March 2012. Women’s Wear Daily profiled Philadelphia’s Macy’s fashion incubator, resulting in the first wholesale order for one of the designers.

February 2012. Lucky Magazine named Philadelphia one of the 25 best cities for shopping in the U.S.

Macy’s fashion incubator, which opened March 1, has been a “smashing success,” according to Michelle Shannon of the Philadelphia Retail Marketing Alliance.

“As we had hoped, the Philadelphia fashion incubator has indeed become a galvanizing force for this community,” she said. “The oncedivided fashion community has rallied around this program and, as a result, new partnerships, alliances and friendships have been forged.”

She said that the five designers-in-residence have received $500,000 in free publicity, including an article in Women’s Wear Daily that led to the first wholesale order being placed for one of the labels.

Second big city pipe bursts, floods Kensington this time

Water main, 48 inches in diameter, floods second neighborhood in 11 days Same size as main that caused massive rupture at 21st and Bainbridge Yet another water main break caused massive flooding yesterday, this time at the intersection of Front and Tioga streets in Kensington.

Residents said water started pouring from the ground in the morning. “I woke up and it was maybe 7:30,” Cristal LaTorre said. “I saw already everything was floating, like a river. I thought it was the beginning of a tsunami.”

Paul Rivera, who works at the intersection, where a sizable sinkhole had opened by yesterday afternoon, recounted the story of a coworker who witnessed the break. “He saw a

stream of water shoot up, then it bubbled like a balloon and burst open,” he said.

Cleanup crews used backhoes to scoop debris from the street yesterday afternoon as far as half a mile away from the break. “They’re still sweeping up dirt,” LaTorre said. “The water brought trash blocks and blocks away.” Front Street was closed off to traffic to Allegheny Avenue, about four blocks south of the intersection.

Because the rupture was located near the top of a hill, it didn’t pool as deep as the main that burst at 21st and Bainbridge streets 11 days ago, but

the water’s reach was more extensive. Residents living farther downhill, near Westmoreland Street, reported up to four feet of water in their basements.

Ron Waite, who owns a hardware store at Front and Tioga streets, said his utilities weren’t affected and his store suffered no damage, but he was dealt a blow in the form of lost profit. “Usually by now, we’ve had 30 to 40 people in the store,” he said this afternoon. “I think we’ve had four or five.”

On Sunday, July 22, a 48-inch main ruptured at 21st and Bainbridge streets in Graduate Hospital, opening a mammoth sinkhole at the intersection that is still being repaired.

Voter ID law leaves Pa. official confused Pennsylvania anticipated that fewer voters wouldn’t have the identification required under a new law to cast a ballot than state employees later estimated, an official said.

Secretary of State Carol Aichele, testifying yesterday at a trial in which the voting law is being challenged, said the state had expected 100,000 people to lack the proper ID. Another state official testified July 30 that the number might be more than 1 million. Aichele’s department oversees the voting process in the state.

Aichele, while disputing the higher estimate, said that if it’s correct, the state has a lot of work to do.

“We think the number is substantially less,” Aichele said. “We planned on less.”

Pennsylvania is one of nine states that passed strict laws requiring a photo ID to vote.

Aichele said she disagreed with the staffer’s assertion that the number was too low.

Aichele later conceded that the state doesn’t know how many registered voters are out there without PennDOT identification.

Business was so brisk at one Chick-fil-A location in the company’s corporate hometown of Atlanta that two employees directed traffic in the parking lot.

Zimmerman judge refuses to step down ORLANDO, FLA. A Florida judge yesterday rejected a motion asking him to step down from the murder trial of George Zimmerman.

Zimmerman’s lawyer, Mark O’Mara, in a motion filed July 13 asking the judge to step down, accused Judge Kenneth Lester of bias, citing what he called “gratuitous” and “disparaging remarks” Lester made in a July 5 ruling raising Zimmerman’s bond from $150,000 to $1 million.

After moving out of the Los Angeles mansion he was sharing with Stewart, Pattinson is shacking up at friend and “Water for Elephants” co-star Reese Witherspoon’s super sweet California ranch, reports Us Weekly. Pattinson remains “inconsolable” about Stewart’s affair with Rupert Sanders and is more of a “total mess” than usual, sources say.

As for Kristen, she’s found support with “Panic Room” costar Jodie Foster. “As soon as she heard the news, Jodie contacted Kristen,” a source tells RadarOnline. “Jodie told Kristen to take no notice of the media bashing and said if she

The BlackStar Film Festival might seem to have a very focused goal: to showcase work by and about people of African descent. While curating the first annual festival, however, artistic director Maori Karmael Holmes learned firsthand how wide-ranging that focus really is. â&#x20AC;&#x153;There is no singular representation of blackness,â&#x20AC;?

Holmes says. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a lot of people and a lot of different cultures and religious experiences and relationship experiences.â&#x20AC;?

Holmes didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t initially plan for such a big project when she booked a couple of dates at International House to screen recent African films. But the more films she saw, the more she realized how much quality work simply wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t appearing on local screens. â&#x20AC;&#x153;A lot of independent film doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t make it to the audience that itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s actually intended for,â&#x20AC;? she says. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It lives in this high art space and doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t make it to the people because it doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t

Underemployment also dire issue Policymakers shouldn’t forget that “underemployment” is also a problem in America.

Ignoring it only makes things worse for the millions of Americans who are only one paycheck or medical mishap away from homelessness and despair. Many people in “working poor” jobs are capable of so much more if given the opportunities to grow, and such incentives can come from the right, left, center — frankly, I don’t care as long as they get a real “chance” at making the American Dream a reality and not a pipe dream. Let’s give them something better than an empty wallet and a stressinduced stroke retirement.

Recent polling suggested that while Obama was more likeable, Mitt Romney is king when it comes to decisionmaking. If Romney were president the past four years, he would have told the auto industry to drop dead when it came to bailouts, which would have led to bankruptcies and a job bloodletting.

Mitt felt it a waste of money to get Sammy Bin Laden, even though he was surfing the Web to plot another terrorist attack. Now we have rumors of Mitt’s reluctance to release 10 years of tax returns. t lunch hour, the award-winning Masala curry house sits empty.

In fact, most of the 60 eateries on London's historic Brick Lane, a typically popular tourist attraction, are ghost towns.

It’s the same story for countless businesses across the U.K. that are unlucky enough to be located some distance from Olympic Park. The hope had been an economic boom of epic proportions brought to London by the 2012 Olympics, but the effect has yet to be felt, according to some business owners.

“We are still waiting,” Masala’s owner, Guljar Khan, told Metro. His curry’s awards are proudly displayed on the front of the restaurant, but they’ve done little to attract crowds, even though curry has arguably replaced fish and chips as Britain’s national dish.

In fact, sales are worse this summer than last summer.

“Athens had the same problem eight years ago, and I don’t think they picked up, but we are hoping we can get more customers in the doors here,” he said.

More than £11 billion (about $17 billion) was invested to improve the city’s transportation, adding hotel rooms and building new retail spaces before an estimated 2.2 million visitors arrived, according to a report

by Visit London. With that investment came looming warnings for locals to steer clear of public transportation, brace for nightmarish traffic and work from home — or get out of London all together.

Meanwhile, those 2.2 million visitors who have brought with them money to spend in London are typically lingering near Olympic Park. The Westfield shopping center attached to the Stratford tube station, where spectators exit for the park, is packed with tourists at any given time — a stark contrast for small businesses across London.

“We have two weeks of the games and business is probably a little bit quieter than expect-

There may not be a season, but the Flyers will be in good hands through 2014-15.

The Flyers announced yesterday that they had inked coach Peter Laviolette to a two-year contract extension.

He had one year remaining on his current deal.

“Peter and I have a strong relationship,” said GM Paul Holmgren. “There was never a question that this wasn’t going to get done. I am very happy to have it done.”

But with the NHL’s collective bargaining agreement set to expire Sept. 15, there is no guarantee there will be a 2012-13 season. In fact, all indications point to a shortened season, similar to what happened in the NBA. Even with the extreme uncertainty hanging over his head, Laviolette is conducting business as usual.

“We will go about it as normal,” the coach said. “Hopefully we start and move for-
