Only Quinn’s feathers ruffled over Chick-fil-A controversy New Jersey Governor Chris Christie

Hey politicians, leave Chick-filA alone! That’s what the majority of New Yorkers said when asked their thoughts in a new Quinnipiac University poll, the results of which were released yesterday. The vast majority of those polled — 82 percent — said they don’t think comments Chick-fil-A president Dan Cathy made this summer against gay marriage should impact the

chain’s ability to receive government permits to operate. And in a different question, 83 percent of the 1,298 people polled said they also disagreed with public officials who try to discourage people from patronizing Chick-fil-A because of Cathy’s opinions. That’s in direct contrast to the stand City Council Speaker Christine Quinn made last month, when she asked New York University to close down

the Chick-fil-A on their campus due to Cathy’s comments. “We are not going to ... patronize businesses that do not reflect the diversity and openness of our great city,” read a petition Quinn launched in July, demanding that Cathy “apologize and change his position.” That same day, Quinn also sent a letter to NYU President John Sexton, asking the school to sever its contract with Chickfil-A.

But according to yesterday’s poll, only 12 percent of New Yorkers agreed with Quinn. “New Yorkers may disagree with what you say, but they defend your right to sell chicken,” quipped Maurice Carroll, Quinnipiac University Polling Institute director. Quinn later slightly clarified her comments, saying she was criticizing Chick-Fil-A as a private citizen and not as an elected official. CARLY BALDWIN

The bondage scene: More than mommy porn fodder Meet the ‘sexual minorities’ of New York BDSM fans hope curiosity of the lifestyle will combat stigma Fetish-seekers shed light on the scene After the sensational story of a hot-blooded breakup between a young Manhattan sex slave and her high-powered CEO master — coupled with the popularity of “Fifty Shades of Grey — curiosity is on the upswing about New York City’s underground fetish world. And it’s prompting those who live it to speak out. The city plays host to dozens of sex clubs, both public and private, visited by thousands of people looking to quench their sexual desires. Though the mainstream perception of BDSM (bondage, dominance, sadism, masochism) and S&M (sadomasochism) is a sexual free-for-all, those who practice it say a relationship formed within these communities is just like any other. “People fail to realize that BDSM is just a microcosm of the population as a whole, Guy Sanders, spokesperson for The Eulenspiegel Society, a BDSM education and support group, told Metro. “It’s kind of like how being gay was years ago. Because people have formulated their own opinions about you and what you are, it’s not prudent to allow your sexual history to come out.

And many more Americans have engaged in some type of BDSM sex play than one may realize: According to the 1993 Janus Report on Sexual Behavior, 14 percent of men and 11 percent of women in the

U.S. have experienced a sadomasochist sexual experience. But don’t expect those involved in such relationships to be very forthcoming about it. The stigma that surrounds alternative sexuality

New York’s fetish sex scene is very much alive and well.

makes many of those who practice it keep it under wraps. “One in three people who are kinky are persecuted. That could be losing a job or losing child custody to having troubles with your family, Susan Wright from the National Coalition for Sexual Freedom said. And she applauds books like the “Fifty Shades for making bondage sex more accepted — or at least, easier to experiment with. “[Fifty Shades] has been wonderful publicity for the BDSM community, Wright said. “I’m hoping ... that it will become tolerated that people have kinky elements to their sexual relationships. BDSM and S&M relationships can be monogamous or polyamorous, meaning couples either swing together or both partners share other lovers. And insiders said plenty of solid relationships and marriages exist among community members. “It’s not all whips and chains and sleeping around, Sanders said, “There is a love and commitment in these relationships. CASSANDRA GARRISON

Bondage breakup in the spotlight In a real-life “Fifty Shades of Grey scenario, Frankie Santiago, 27, submitted to daily whippings from her 53-yearold lover, Edward Sonderling. That is, until Santiago discovered that Sonderling had recruited a new apprentice to replace her and, in response, sent him more than 40 text messages over a 12-day period. She was arrested Monday

and charged with stalking, according to the Post. BDSM-based relationships are not immune to jealousy or messy breakups, but bondage community members say they hope the media attention to this case will combat stigma. “I don’t see any difference between the vanilla community and this community in terms of what people are looking for, or in terms of whether or not you’re stable, said Mazie, a Staten Island-based fetish community member. METRO/CG

All’s fair in love and bondage? ISTOCK

Inside New York City’s BDSM scene BDSM community member Mazie compared S&M to a runner’s high, saying it’s “euphoria that results from a chemical release in the brain from dealing with something that hurts. The city has dozens of outlets for people looking to get kinky. The Eulenspiegel Society, a BDSM education and support group, hosts events from lingerie parties to workshops on using needles for sexual pleasure. BDSM activities could in-

clude blindfolding, handcuffing, biting, interrogation, spanking, suspension, role playing or “fear play, where one partner exploits the other partner’s fear or phobia. “Nobody does anything more than the other person wants done, Sanders said. Fetish-seekers also find each other at private parties hosted at homes or sex clubs like Paddles on West 26th St. The New York Bondage Club hosts weekly events for men that include dungeons, bondage tables and tension hoist ropes. Novices and experts are invited to “play or watch to experience “pleasure or pain. METRO/CG

Chris Brown, Drake named in $16M club suit Rappers Chris Brown and Drake may have to pay the price after a claim they started a fight in a Manhattan nightclub in June. The two were named in a $16 million lawsuit filed yesterday that claims they started the bottle-throwing brouhaha at joint clubs Greenhouse and WiP, according to the New York Post. The two rappers are accused of “gross negligence,” “ultrahazardous activity” and “intentional illegal acts.” In papers filed in Manhattan Supreme Court, Entertainment Enterprises Ltd. states that Brown and Drake had a grudge against each other stemming from their romantic relationships with Rihanna. According to the suit, both men arrived at the clubs each “with his own small army of bodyguards, ‘security’ personnel, employees, friends and other members of their entourage, consisting of at least 15 heavily built men trained and/or experienced in hand-tohand and weapons combat.” When the fight erupted, the two dueling crews used what they could find as weapons. “On defendant Brown and

defendant Drake’s instructions, their two posses had at each other, throwing highball glasses laden with alcohol, shattering the handles of bottles of spirits to use as makeshift knives and even throwing bottles at each other,” the suit read, according to the New York Post. Among those injured was basketball player Tony Parker. Parker has filed his own suit against Greenhouse and WiP over the incident, demanding $20 million. MARY ANN GEORGANTOPOULOS

The inaugural race was held Aug. 11, with a fee of $825.

The new price of $1,200 is a 37 per37 cent increase over this year’s fee of $825. “Operating one of these races in a major metropolitan area carries a pretty significant price tag,” Shane Facteau, Ironman’s vice president of North American operations, said. BLOOMBERG

She can’t wait to race down the aisle.

This is just the way we like our Pattinson: pouty and bed-headed.

With his latest film, “Cosmopolis,” set to hit theaters Friday, Robert Pattinson — who has never been one to talk about his personal life — has been at the mercy of the media. He eased into things Monday with “The Daily Show,” where Jon Stewart playfully offered him a pint of breakup Ben & Jerry’s before obediently asking him about the film that no one

cared about. But “Good Morning America” host George Stephanopoulos wasn’t about to let dignity get in his way yesterday morning. After Pattinson didn’t voluntarily offer any details about how he’s coping after the Kristen Stewart cheating scandal, Stephanopoulos pressed, “What do you want your fans to know about what’s going on

in your personal life?” Pattinson finally offered some insight: “I’d like my fans to know that Cinnamon Toast Crunch is just 130 calories.” We’re pretty sure this is as close as we’re ever going to get to eating breakfast with Robert Pattinson. And we’ll take it — even if he does pour a skimpy little bowl of Cinnamon Toast Crunch.

Katrina Darling’s curtsey requires a little cropping.

Despite the long list of ways a person can be dumped, it’s often the case that no actual breakup happens at all. Ending a relationship with unreturned phone calls or unanswered texts is sadly the norm. Audrey Melnik, CEO of Wotwentwrong.com, had enough of that. Fed up with the anguish she and her friends experienced when they were kicked to the curb with no explanation, she was determined to find a productive method of getting feedback from those who had ended things. The result is a website that helps the dumped compose what Melnik describes as a “nonchalant, not clingy” e-mail that politely asks the one who did the dumping for full disclosure. “The tone that I wanted to set pretty much throughout all of it is: ‘I’m not trying to get

There’s a full moon on the right RE: “NO WAKE-UP ALARM NEEDED, THANKS” (METRO, AUG. 15)

Mr. Tordoff shows why the left wing does have contempt for people who misconstrue them as “lunatics” with “delusional worldviews” by espousing the right-wing mantra of blowharding with rhetorical right hooks while offering no solutions, a la Fox News and the GOP, respectively. Leftists listen to our economists (stimulus spend), our best scientific minds (climate change) and our religious leaders (take care of the less fortunate). What is lunacy is governing by recklessly and viciously feeding on racism induced by hyperbole, such as “the illegals are taking our jobs.” The new, extreme rightwing ideology is like a pathogenic virus, killing its host

Taking shelter from the (tax) storm RE: “AMERICANS NEED TO JUMP OFF THE WAGON” (METRO, AUG. 15)

Mr. Mclaughlan clearly has it all wrong. Obama is not a socialist; he is a corporate lackey, just like the Republicans are. The top 1 percent have $32 trillion in offshore accounts so as to evade taxation, yet they are paying the lowest taxes ever. The banks and motor car companies got bailed out, to the tune of $13 trillion, using taxpayers’ money (that is socialist and that is definitely riding the handouts bandwagon). Republicans claim to be champions of free markets and capitalism, yet

they won’t let the banks and the rich hedge-funders fail, while small business owners are left to their own devices. That’s corporate socialism. GARY LYON, NYC

Rich, richer and Sir Richard Branson I am quite looking forward to Sir Richard Branson’s upcoming edition of Metro. It will be a welcome change to hear from a real success story, versus a fake one like a certain GOP candidate.

Dourdis assigns praise to Mr. Obama for “creating” jobs. Get the facts right, please. The “jobs” created are based on the changing unemployment numbers, which may be lower when people do not get free checks and therefore are not being counted as part of those looking for work. The jobs he has created are in big government. Socialism is failing in Europe, so why bring it here?

Guess all the Fox News viewers missed the two studies done last spring that showed that people who watched Fox

Songza playlist

Dark solitude Late-night public transit has a way of setting the perfect stage for dark, entrancing music with salacious undertones and plenty of bass. Transcend the cacophony with the playlist at www.songza.com/listen/ night-bus-DevinWoolf. It’s nearly four hours of ambient tunes that conjure up images of neon lights reflecting in puddles. Artists range from Robin Gibb to M83 to The Glove, which was a side project of Robert Smith of The Cure, pictured. — Songza is a streaming platform that mines years of music history and today’s music blogs for the best gems, so you don’t have to. The company offers thousands of expertly curated playlists for free on the Web, iPhone and iPad.

erry Farrell has being a rock star down. After all these years, the public face of being in a rock band is second nature to the Jane’s Addiction frontman and Lollapalooza auteur. “I learned something from Tim Leary,” he confides. We sit up, prepared for something juicy from the psychedelic guru. But we didn’t get it. Leary, it seems, was all about the business. “He told me that really what you’re after is a sound byte,” says Farrell. We are? “If you can have one sentence, a 30-second sound byte that sticks in people’s minds, then you’ve done your job.” We have? “That’s what everyone is looking for, that’s what the interviewer wants. So, when I speak to people it’s almost like

I’m writing poetry, like I’m writing a sound byte that will be memorable!” Have we had ours? “I think we did something pretty remarkable, talking about the Walk of Fame and the RF [radio frequency] chip,” interjects Farrell. He’s right; earlier Farrell talked about Jane’s Addiction’s inclusion in the 2013 inductees to the Hollywood Walk of Fame and his interactive idea for Jane’s star — and perhaps the future of the famous stretch. “I’d like to put an RF chip in our star so that when people walk over our star they can hear music or see pictures on their phone. I’ve got to approach the board about it, but it would revolutionize the Walk of Fame.” LINDA LABAN

Restaurant news

You’ll be feeling the spirit — and it won’t just be the mimosas.

Get uplifted uptown Every Sunday morning at Ginny’s Supper Club (the recently minted venue downstairs from Harlem restaurant Red Rooster) diners are serenaded by Vy Higginsen’s Gospel for Teens Choir, a program that trains local teens in the high-energy art of gospel singing. The soul food brunch is served buffet-style from 11 a.m. and includes Red Rooster’s signature fried Yardbird served over waffles and maple syrup, biscuits and gravy, chilled salmon, house-baked sweet rolls and, of course, red velvet cupcakes. Brunch, with three performances, is $35 a person. www.redroosterharlem.com /ginnys

Free sips during Summer Streets This Saturday is your last chance to take advantage of Summer Streets: From 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. a 7-mile stretch of Park Ave. to Lafayette St. will be closed to traffic and opened to

bikers, joggers, skateboarders and strollers of both the carrying-a-baby and carrying-a-latte varieties. Along the way, stop at The Smile at 26 Bond St. (www.thesmilenyc.com) to sample the new brunch menu — we like their sliced summer peaches over house made ricotta and rosemary honey. And if you mention “Summer Streets” to your server before 1 p.m., you’ll get a mimosa or bloody mary on the house.

Old Bay for days If you haven’t yet had the chance to get handsy with a pile of crabs this summer, don’t fret. From Sept. 7-9, the second annual Hammer & Claw allyou-can-eat crabstravaganza will be held in the Tunnel Space of the Terminal Stores building in Chelsea. Tickets are $89 per person, $45 for kids aged 6-12 (kids 5 and under eat free). Proceeds will benefit the Chesapeake Bay Foundation. For tickets and a helpful “howto” video on shelling crabs, visit www.hammerandclaws.com. METRO/RF

uttermilk Falls Inn and Spa in Milton, New York, offers an almost total immersion in the farm-to-table experience, with less plow-pushing and more glass-raising — let’s call it farmto-spa. The Inn is located on 75 acres overlooking the Hudson that encapsulate an organic garden, an aviary, hiking paths and ponds. Roaming is encouraged. Guests are free to pick at will from the fruit trees planted throughout the property: granny smith apples, donut peaches, shiso plums. And Buttermilk’s full-service spa with a sauna, steam room and pool is housed in an open glass building, so you don’t have to tear yourself away from the spectacular scenery. Local wines, by the glass or bottle, can be ordered to your deck chair. The Inn’s restaurant, Henry’s at the Farm, uses ingredients from the onsite organic garden to create farm-fresh cuisine as well as cocktails incorporating the latest fruit and

Newly appointed head chef Chad Greer has been on a strictly seasonal schedule since assuming his role at Henry’s, constantly adapting the menu to reflect what’s fresh. Inn’s stone patio; it incorporates eggs from the chickens kept on the property (who are fed kitchen scraps), as well as house-made breads, sour cream waffles and frittatas. Although Chef Greer enjoys cooking with the bold, sweet flavors of the property’s summer harvest, he’s looking forward to the cooler months. “In this area, fall’s probably the most exciting. We get a lot of ‘leaf-peepers,’” he says. Greer anticipates a rush on butternut squash soup. “I just can’t stop making it. I make the soup and my wife makes banana bread, and we turn those into croutons.”

Cabrera rounds the bases past former teammate and friend Robinson Cano during this year’s All-Star Game.

Melk-man busted: Yanks talk suspension Melky Cabrera was a Yankee from 2005-2009 and along the way forged close friendships with teammates Alex Rodriguez, Robinson Cano and Derek Jeter while helping the team to a World Series title. Three years after that World Series, Cabrera blossomed into the star many projected he was going to be for the Giants. Cabrera’s stardom was derailed yesterday when it was announced he tested positive for elevated amounts of testos-

terone. Cabrera will be suspended for 50 games. “It’s disappointing,” manager Joe Girardi said. “Obviously Melky means a lot to all of us as far as our championship. He provided some really good moments here. It’s something that you don’t ever want to have to deal with, and it’s something that baseball’s trying to stay away from, but it happens.” Cano was relaxing at his corner locker when the news

flashed over the clubhouse televisions. He did not say much but expressed complete surprise at this turn for his close friend. “Oh, 100 percent surprised,” Cano said. “I was just here in my chair when I [was] watching the news. I don’t know, man. I never used any of those. I don’t know any details about it. I just see the news. I’m just sad about it and I’m going to be there for him.”

TURN FLIERS INTO GOLD Fantasy sports

ADAM LEVITAN ALEVITAN@METRO.US

Thou shalt not commit adultery. Thou shalt not kill. Thou shalt not waste picks late in fantasy drafts. After we’ve established our starters and prime bench, the draft is far from over. We can still mine the field for lottery tickets:

Pick up the receiver Oftentimes, the best fliers are wideouts. That’s because most

teams use at least three of them every Sunday and guys can come from way off the radar — like Jordy Nelson and Victor Cruz last season. This year, it’s worth rolling the dice on the young studs in elite passing offenses. Brandon LaFell is locked into the No. 2 job in Carolina. The Packers won’t be able to keep Randall Cobb’s raw talent off the field. Titus Young is tearing the cover off Lions camp and Kendall Wright is poised to take advantage of Kenny Britt’s various issues.

Depth and trade bait At other positions, we’re less likely to turn late-round lottery tickets into gold. But we can build our depth for bye weeks. At tight end, second-year man Kyle Rudolph has been the unquestioned star of Vikings camp. He’s playing the same position that tight end Aaron Hernandez plays in New England. Coby Fleener is getting all the hype in Indy, but fellow rookie Dwayne Allen is the every-down guy.

Wasted fliers

Top MLB pickups

1

Grant Balfour, RP, OAK — Ryan Cook lost the strike zone and lost his job. Balfour has the closer’s gig and is humming along for a team that plays plenty of close games.

2

Manny Machado, SS, BAL — The No. 3 overall pick in the 2010 draft smacked three homers and drove in seven runs in his first five bigleague games. The 20year-old is for real.

Ronnie Brown RB, Chargers Ryan Mathews (clavicle) is only expected to miss one or two games and Brown has nothing left in the tank.

Danny Amendola WR, Rams The Rams are going to a runheavy offense and Amendola has no after-the-catch skills. Avoid all wideouts in STL.

Nadal out NFL news

Witten woe Jason Witten hasn’t missed a game since 2003. That streak is now jeopardy after he damaged his spleen on Monday night. He won’t need surgery but his return time takes him very close to Week 1. Even if Witten makes it back for the opener, he’s wearing down at age 30. Aaron Hernandez, Jermichael Finley and Fred Davis are better tight ends.

Rafael Nadal announced on Twitter yesterday he will not play in this year’s U.S. Open. Nadal lost in the second round of last month’s Wimbledon and has not played since. The nagging knee injury also caused him to miss the Olympics, where he was the defending gold medalist. His only U.S. Open title came in 2010. This year’s tournament begins on Aug. 27.
