Marsha Forman, 82, shows off a ball that Johnny Pesky signed for her 40 years ago.
As a player, manager and commentator, Johnny Pesky spent more than 60 years with the Red Sox, becoming a familiar face to countless fans. Pesky, who died last Monday at 92 years old, was a legend for one of the most followed teams in all of sports. He didn’t hit a lot of home runs and he hadn’t played a Major League Baseball game since 1954, but he received one of the loudest ovations when he appeared during the 100th anniversary of Fenway Park earlier this year. With all that Pesky had done for the Red Sox, and his North Shore community, those who paid their respects at his public wake yesterday were surprised to see few other fans and friends. “I wish there was more people here,” said James Raftelis, 52, of Lynn, after leaving the Lynn funeral home hosting Pesky’s services. Raftelis, dressed in a Red Sox jersey and hat and carrying Sox pictures, recalled Pesky’s generosity in the community

Players pay respects While the funeral home was made open to all in Red Sox Nation yesterday, a private wake took place Saturday for members of the Red Sox organization and close friends and family. and pointed out how he always made time to sign autographs. “I knew Johnny all of my life. I was glad to come down here,” he said. A public wake had been announced for yesterday that stretched from 2 p.m. through 8 p.m. For the first half of that time, fewer than 200 people came and went from the Solimine Landergan and Richardson Funeral Home. The only time a line formed during the first half of the wake was right before the doors opened at 2 p.m. However, those who did attend yesterday’s wake and paid their respects recalled Pesky as a generous and modest man. Debra Woodward, who traveled from North Hampton, N.H., to say goodbye to No. 6, recalled how she asked Pesky for his autograph and he jokingly told her that she didn’t want his and should get a younger player’s autograph. He signed the ball anyway. “He was Mr. Red Sox to us.” she said.
Inside the funeral home No cameras were allowed inside the funeral home at the request of the family, but members of the public were invited inside. Photographs of Pesky as a young player were displayed inside the funeral home, as well as pictures of an older Pesky with fellow Red Sox legend Ted Williams. Pesky’s casket was open and inside hung a No. 6, similar to the display of retired numbers inside Fenway Park. Donation envelopes were made available. Donations can be made to The Jimmy Fund, 10 Brookline Place, West Brookline, MA 02445.

Harvard Yard was peaceful during the day last week, but two rapes took place near there at night. COURTNEY SACCO/METRO
A woman reported being attacked and raped near Harvard Yard, making it the second reported rape in the area in less than a week. The most recent attack occurred just after 11 p.m. Tuesday, but the woman reported the incident to Somerville police on Friday. The Harvard University Police Department then put out an alert that same day. The woman said she was attacked near Oxford and Kirkland streets. That incident is a short distance from where the first attack occurred on Aug. 10, at about 3:15 a.m. A woman reported that she was grabbed as she walked through the Johnston Gate. She was pulled behind Massachusetts Hall and attacked, police said. Neither of the women were affiliated with the university.
University police said again that they have increased the presence of both uniformed and plainclothes officers in and around the Yard and surrounding campus. “The Harvard University Police Department wants to remind students, faculty, and staff that we are located in an urban setting and share many of the crime and safety issues that exist in any city. Community members should be vigilant while walking throughout campus and surrounding areas,” university police said in their alert. The suspect in the most recent attack was described as a white man in his mid-20s, about 5 feet, 6 inches tall with a thin build and dark, spiky hair. Anyone with information can call 617-495-1796. Julian Assange addresses the press and his supporters from the balcony of the Ecuadorian Embassy in London yesterday.
WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange berated the United States yesterday from the balcony of the Ecuadorean embassy where he has sought refuge from arrest, challenging President Barack Obama to end what he called a “witch hunt against his whistle-blowing website. Speaking from within the London mission to avoid being detained by British police who want to extradite him to Sweden for questioning over rape allegations, Assange said the United States was fighting a war against outlets like WikiLeaks. Pitching himself alongside Russian punk band Pussy Riot and the New York Times newspaper, Assange said the United States risked shunting the world into an era of journalistic oppression. He did not mention the rape allegations.

Bashar al-Assad made his first appearance in public since a July bombing that killed four top security officials, attending prayers at a Damascus mosque yesterday to mark the start of the Mus-

The first day of Eid also gave Assad’s opponents a chance to rally, and activists reported protests around Syria, including in the capital, on a holiday that marks the end of the Islamic holy fasting month of Ramadan. Battling a 17-month-old uprising against 42 years of rule by his family, Assad was filmed at prayer with his prime minister and foreign minister but not with his vice president, Farouq alShara, whose reported defection was denied the previous day. WASHINGTON. When General
Motors announced in 2008 that it would shut down its assembly plant in Janesville, Wis., local Representative Paul Ryan leaped into action. Ryan met with company executives to try to change their minds. He lobbied the Obama administration for federal retraining and economic-development funds. He even broke with his party to vote in Congress for a $15 billion federal bailout for GM and Chrysler. Criticized by President Obama this week as the “ideological leader” of costslashing Republicans in Congress, Ryan has veered from his budget-hawk stance at crucial times. REUTERS

Republican U.S. presidential challenger Mitt Romney plans to make public his 2011 tax return by Oct. 15, a senior campaign adviser said yesterday. Romney, a former private equity executive who is one of the richest men ever to run for president, has come under pressure for months from the Obama campaign to release more years of tax returns. He has released his 2010 tax return and estimates for 2011 but does not plan to reveal more years of returns. In April, he requested an extension from the Internal Revenue Service to file his 2011 tax

Pew’s new research debates value of checking accounts for college students On Aug. 8, the Pew Charitable Trusts released its most recent report in a series focused on checking accounts, and the results will no doubt be of interest to college students — and their parents. “Student Checking Accounts: Are They Worth It? looked at student accounts offered by the 12 largest U.S. banks and 12 largest credit unions. Pew found that these accounts typically contained only minor differences from other “basic accounts offered to everyone and that these differences were not always helpful to students. Moreover, the differences were often buried in more than 90 pages of disclosures and agreements. Two specific overdraft fees associated with these accounts have gone up in the past two years: extended overdraft penalties and overdraft transfers. “Right now, if you want to shop for a checking account, you can look at where the branches are and where the ATMs are, but that’s pretty much it, says Weinstock. “We want people to be able to shop on the things that really matter — what it’s going to cost them. BRUCE WALSH

When with Rome
COURTESY OF FUELED BY RAMEN
Singer starts a solo career with ‘Dedication,’ but he says his true dedication will always be to Sublime What’s it going to be? Rome? Rome Ramirez? Rome Without Sublime? The latter-day singer for the So-Cal ska-punk veterans just released his solo debut, the “Dedication” EP, but what to call his new band? “How about just The Incredibly Handsome Rome,” Ramirez jokes. “[People will think] ‘We need to check out this incredibly handsome boy!’” He laughs before continuing more seriously. “I have my best friends that I’ve grown up with playing music on stage with me in the band,” he says of his solo project, which will likely be named Rome. “It’s awesome: Now I get the chance to pass the torch down to my friends. It’s the most beautiful gift to be able to offer someone an opportunity.” He should know, because that’s what Sublime did for him.
“Sublime will always be my main priority. I’ll do my album around that. I don’t want to rush this; it will be how I want it, when I want it. Time is on my side.” ROME RAMIREZ
If you go Sublime with Rome with Cypress Hill and Pepper Tonight, 7 Bank of America Pavilion 290 Northern Ave., Boston $24-$94, 800-745-3000 www.livenation.com
“They took me around the world, introduced me to amazing people and showed me great things,” he says. “I had all this built-up inspiration.” Ramirez will follow with a full-length record, but for now, he and Sublime co-founder, bassist Eric Wilson, are concentrating on promoting last year’s Sublime with Rome debut album, “Yours Truly.” Sublime’s original drummer, Bud Gaugh, opted out after recording the album; Josh Freese (who has played with everyone from Guns N’ Roses to Devo) is behind the kit for now. “Sublime will always be my main priority,” adds Ramirez. “I’ll do my album around that. I don’t want to rush this; it will be how I want it, when I want it. Time is on my side.” LINDA LABAN

Lovin’ is what they’ve got: from left, Rome Ramirez and Eric Wilson.
Rome won’t roam too far this summer Rome’s solo songs speak to the same sunny So-Cal grooves as Sublime’s, so it’s no wonder he fit easily into
much-loved frontman Bradley Nowell’s shoes. (Nowell died from a heroin overdose in 1996.) But the summer tour is all about Sublime: “I’d love for fans to love my music as much as
they love Sublime’s, but I do really want to keep the difference between [them] when the fans come out to see Sublime. I really do want to keep it separate and draw a line.”

ver the last two decades, New York conceptual artist Brainard Carey has carved out a career for himself on the international scene, with featured performances at the Whitney and Venice Biennials, among other notable venues. But he has also pursued a parallel career as a kind of motivational speaker for contemporary artists. His message: In order to have a career, you have to develop your strategic voice, not just your artistic voice. “Artists who have a sense of aesthetics and quality constantly see other work which is poorly made — or just bad — being exhibited. That’s very frustrating. But it also tells us something: There is another mechanism, beyond quality, for why that work is presented,” explains Carey. “So all I’m saying is, ‘let’s look at what those mechanisms are.’” His latest book, “New

Markets For Artists,” is a sequel to last year’s “Making It in the Art World.” This time, Carey wants to help artists rethink their use of social media and online markets. “One of the ways people gain access is understanding how to reach people in an effective way. It’s all incredibly personal. How we approach people and handle ourselves is 90 percent of what’s going on in our careers,” he explains. “We have to practice our etiquette and think about how we’re approaching people. The best analogy is online dating: It’s not very effective to say, ‘Here’s my picture. If you think I’m handsome, click my e-mail.’ Yet that’s basically what artists often do with their work. That’s not attractive. People want to see something about who you are and how you think.” BRUCE WALSH

Are women helping each other in the workplace? CREATAS
“Women help women in the workplace in myriad ways,” proclaims Teresa Currier, chair of Saul Ewing LLC’s Women’s Development Initiative. “First, the mere presence of other professional women helps younger women making their way up, because a strong population of women silently stands for the proposition of inclusion in one of its many forms.” It’s difficult to say if this thought reflects what’s really happening in the workplace. Of course, we hope it’s accurate, but a recent poll by LinkedIn found that 51 percent of
“We’re all in this together. Women today know that, and act upon it.” CURRIER
women surveyed between the ages of 18 and 29 said that they have not been mentored by female colleagues. Of the women questioned, 67 percent of those who aren’t mentoring others said the reason is because they haven’t been asked to mentor anyone. While it’s hard not to get
discouraged by these numbers, it’s important to remember a couple of things. First, each situation is circumstantial. Brittany Sykes, senior account executive at Teszler PR, Inc., recalls when her supervisor, Barbara Teszler, helped her advance in her career. “After interning [for Teszler], I was offered a trial run for a position and ultimately became a publicist,” says Sykes. “[Teszler] left the company to start her own and because she loved the work I did for her, I followed her a few months later. We now work together, bouncing ideas

something very insightful: Women aren’t asking to be mentored. “We’re all in this together,” Currier reminds us. “Women today know that, and
act upon it.” If we look up to other women in the workplace, the study suggests we need to start asking them to help us in our own careers. JULIA WEST

How to start your day on the right foot
W
hatever attitude we wake up with can dictate how we experience the rest of the day. When we wake with a BADitude, our negative energy leaks into every area of life. Starting the day with low-level energy can negatively affect our commute to work, the way we interact with others and our overall productivity throughout the day. But starting the day with a good attitude can set us up to win! Incorporate these tools into your morning routine and start every day with a positive disposition that will last well past the closing bell.

Your intentions create your reality, and what you focus on first thing in the morning can have a powerful impact on your whole day. Therefore, the goal here is to set positive intentions from the get-go. The moment you open your eyes, choose a positive intention. Say it out loud, write it in a journal or affirm it while looking in the mirror. Take time to commit to a positive intention and trust that focusing on the good stuff

Silently bless the people in your life If you focus on resentments toward others (such as getting stressed about co-workers) while brewing your morning coffee, your negative attitude will set the tone for all your interactions. Instead of launching into the day with anger and negativity, say a silent prayer for the people you’ve been resenting. Pray for them to have all that you want for yourself and envision them happy. I know this may sound difficult, but it’s totally worth it. The instant you bless another person, you clear space to receive more love and positivity.

Social ills sign immorality coming home to roost RE: “DON’T BE CHICKEN — PROTEST CORRECTLY” (METRO, AUG. 17-19) Harry Cooperman
seems to confuse leftist ideals with American ideals. He believes that people have the right to pursue happiness by “any” means. The American ideal allows for the pursuit of happiness by “legal” means. He also believes Dan Cathy’s moral beliefs are wrong simply because they are inconsistent with his leftist ideals. American ideals allow for freedom of religion and thought for all, not just for those on the left. Many of the social ills in America are a direct result of the leftist creed that people have a right to pursue happiness by any means — hence illegal immi-
Have a dictionary handy while mud-slinging
Those who write in calling people who disagree with them “homophobic” need to consult a dictionary. Homophobia is an unreasonable fear of or aversion to homosexuals or homosexuality. You can disagree with homosexual ideas because you believe they are intrinsically wrong or detrimental in some way to society, etc. Intellectual disagreement and aversion are two very different things. Aversion has to do with feelings, with repugnance. For example,
you can have a gay child you love dearly and still not agree with same-sex marriage. Homosexuals should stop calling people names and appearing ignorant. ADELAIDE VERPONI, VIA E-MAIL

BOWMAN, VIA E-MAIL
Under Obamacare, elderly will suffer Let’s talk simply. The undisputed $716 billion being cut from Medicare is so that money can be used to pay for the new people Obamacare is planned to cover. It comes out of doctor and hospital reimbursements, which simply means that many doctors will stop taking Medicare patients because the government is not going to pay for even the cost to care for them. The same with hospitals, except the hospitals will just go out of business. In other words, many, many current seniors on Medicare will not be serviced. This is how Obama is saying he will reduce costs: ignoring the needs of the “too old” seniors. There is a much better way: the Ryan/Wyden plan. JOHN SANGENARIO, VIA E-MAIL
because associates might not be totally in accord with your interests, it doesn’t mean they dislike you. In order to see things clearly, don’t let your emotions dictate reasoning. Pisces Feb. 20-March 20. Certain advantages that you presently possess might be lost or undermined if you exert too much pressure on cohorts. Know when to stop pushing and when to start pleasing. Aries March 21-April 19. Keep an open mind and give associates credit for being at least as smart as you. It’s a mistake to discount their ideas and views just because they’re different from yours. Taurus April 20-May 20. Chances are you’ll get better terms if you allow the other party to make the first proposal in a business deal. Associates are apt to treat you more generously than you anticipate. Gemini May 21-June 20. As long as companions are cooperative and making concessions, you’ll be extremely congenial. Should they want what you want, however, it’ll be another story. Boston’s Mt. Rushmore With Aly Raisman’s jump to Boston sports stardom, it’s time to re-examine the four athletes who define the city’s sports history most Even Larry Legend didn’t make our cut GETTY IMAGES
At the height of “Aly Raisman-mania,” there was one particular note of hyperbole that caused a stir on the Boston sports scene. Comcast SportsNet’s Gary Tanguay said that the Needham gymnast belonged on Boston sports’ Mount Rushmore. Now, as phenomenal as Raisman’s feat was (two gold medals and a bronze), it occurred over the span of a few days. The four guys carved into the minds of most sports fans in New England built their legacies over a decade and brought years and years of joy to the region. Raisman is one of the greatest Boston sports figures of all-time, but we’re talking about a list here that routinely leaves Larry Bird off when discussed. If you’re too young to remember, Bird brought three NBA titles home in the 1980s and did the absolute impossible — he made Boston a basketball town for several glorious years. The height of Bird’s popularity during this period in time cannot be exaggerated. His blue-collar, stone cold killer-like demeanor made every guy in Boston want to grow a wispy mustache and shoot hoops. MATT BURKE
The Forsyth Institute A Leading Research Organization Dedicated to Oral and Biomedical Sciences
Bill Russell 1956-69
Ted Williams 1939-60
Bobby Orr
Larry Bird didn’t make the cut. It’s largely due to this guy. Russell won an unprecedented 11 NBA titles, which makes him the greatest winner in sports history. No. 6 changed the game with his defensive prowess and averaged 22.5 rebounds per game in his career. He was a five-time NBA MVP.
“The greatest hitter who ever lived,” “The Kid,” “Teddy Ballgame,” “The Splendid Splinter.” No one could decide on one nickname for Williams, the best player in Red Sox history and arguably the best offensive player in baseball history. While jokes about his frozen head reign supreme with the young Boston audience, he should always be remembered as the last player to bat .400 in a season and an all-time great American. Williams missed playing baseball from 194246 and 1952-53 due to his service as a naval aviator for the U.S. Marine Corps in WWII and Korea.
The greatest defensive hockey player of all-time, Orr is sometimes a forgotten man on the national sports platform. Locals insist to this day that he is “better than Gretzky,” and had knee issues not cut his career short, he likely would have had the stats to back it up. Orr led the NHL in assists for five years as a defenseman and brought home two Stanley Cups. The image of Orr flying through the air after scoring a game-winning goal is cemented (literally) outside TD Garden.

The book is not fully written on No. 12, but there is still time for him to go down as the best QB to ever play the game. At the beginning of his career he won three Super Bowl titles but didn’t have the stats to back-up Patriots fans’ claims that he was the best in the NFL. That changed starting in 2007, when he had the greatest single season a quarterback could ever have, throwing 50 touchdown passes while leading the Pats to a 16-0 regular season record. Brady has guided New England to the Super Bowl five times in the past 11 years. He won the NFL MVP award in 2007 and 2010.

G NEWMAN LOWRANCE/GETTY IMAGES
Test sample No. 2 Three things for Pats fans to look for Monday night when the Philadelphia Eagles invade Gillette Stadium (8 p.m., ESPN):
1
O-LINE ANY BETTER?
One of the biggest issues in camp is the cohesiveness of the offensive line. It’s undoubtedly strange for Tom Brady to not have his reliable left tackle, Matt Light, protecting his blind side anymore, but Brady has no choice but to move on. Second-year offensive lineman Nate Solder will take over, and hopefully
fare better than he did against the Saints. Left guard Logan Mankins is back practicing with the team as well, but you won’t see him tonight. Still no sign of right guard Brian Waters. The Patriots can have all the offensive weapons in the world, but without a capable O-line, it’ll be ugly.
2
EARLY TEST FOR DEFENSE
While they’ve yet to get it all together, the Eagles boast one of the better offenses in the NFL: Mike Vick at QB, LeSean McCoy at RB, DeSean
Jackson and Jeremy Maclin at wide receiver — to name a few. I’m keeping an eye on the Patriots secondary, specifically safeties Pat Chung and Steve Gregory. Gregory was signed by the Pats in the offseason, and he and Chung have jelled nicely on the practice field. Bill Belichick seems happy with what he’s seen at the position.
3
RUNNING OUT OF TIME
Going into the second preseason game, there’s no real frontrunner for the starting running back position. Ste-
van Ridley has still shown some issues holding on to the ball, and it has opened the door for fellow second-year back, Shane Vereen. Vereen could take advantage of his situation with a strong start against the Eagles’ starters tonight. He’s been a nice passcatching back in camp, but showed his skill on the ground against the Saints. Keep a close eye on the playing time and production of each back. JIMMY TOSCANO sports@metro.us
