But 21-year-old Brett Cohen isn’t an actor. Nor is he a musician, an athlete, or a model.

Brett Cohen is a prankster — and on the night of July 27, he duped thousands of people into thinking he was a huge celebrity.

Cohen, a media management student at SUNY-New Paltz and a Long Island native, planned the fake celebrity stunt with a group of friends just to see if they could pull it off. They recruited two bodyguards from ads on Craiglist, planted paparazzi-style photographers and personal assistants. Cohen, though, had to make sure he looked the part.

He donned a collared shirt, jeans, tinted sunglasses and spiked hair.

“I was going for a Tom Cruise kind of look,” Cohen, who posted the video online Wednesday, told Metro.

He entered NBC on 50th Street and exited at 49th Street to a small crowd of people who gathered after his “assistants” told them a big celebrity was about to exit. Cohen said his crew did not plant any fans and all the reactions seen in the

Cohen estimates he posed for about 300 photos that night. He said the crowd was a mix of tourists and New Yorkers.

Some people said they recognized Cohen from the movie “SpiderMan.” Others said they’d heard his music and thought he had a bright future.

In one group of excited teenaged fans, a girl can be heard saying, “This is the best day of my life! I love him!”

Women asked to join topless march Sunday BRYANT PARK. Yes, it’s legal for

women to be topless in New York State. On Sunday, a group is looking to gather some, er, support for that right.

GoTopless, a group that says it is “dedicated to attaining women’s rights to go barechested,” is organizing a march through Midtown on Sunday of topless women.

The group says it is petitioning the Obama administration to have that right recognized nationally.

“Any state or local law making it illegal for a woman to go topless is

unconstitutional, but most people don’t know that,” said GoTopless’ president, Nadine Gary. “That’s why we’re taking the issue of topless rights to the top by demanding the president’s attention to this issue.”

Gary is calling for women to join her at noon in Bryant Park Sunday. From there the group will march to Times Square and back — ideally topless, she says.

Cohen’s co-producer, Edward Sturm, was part of a camera crew interviewing fans in the crowd.

“I think it’s ridiculous,” Cohen laughed. “It makes a point about culture and how people are so obsessed with celebrity.”

The prank continued for several blocks until one of Co-

hen’s bodyguards ushered the crew into a hotel bar. The crowd eventually dissipated. At the end of the video, Cohen is seen walking to the subway as if nothing had happened.

Cohen is scheduled to appear on “Good Morning America” Friday.

Rejected payroll tax a blow to cash-starved MTA NEW YORK. A payroll tax projected to pump $1.26 billion into the MTA’s budget this year may not provide another penny after a state judge struck it down as unconstitutional.

Cops punished for offensive West Indian parade remarks

Last September, officers assigned to cover the Labor Day parade bitterly complained on a Facebook page called “No More West Indian Day Detail.”

About 250 comments in all were made on the page, including relatively benign grumblings about having to work on Labor Day to more extreme comments calling parade attendees “savages” and “animals.”

Some comments were written by names that matched registered New York City police officers and others were left anonymously. Some cops claimed their Facebook accounts had been hijacked.

An Internal Affairs investigation into the matter was launched last September, and investigators found that 20 people who posted in the group matched the names of current NYPD officers.

NYPD spokesman Paul Browne announced Thursday that 17 cops in total will be

punished for leaving the remarks.

Most of the cops received low levels of punishment, but four officers will face more severe punishment: They will stand departmental trials on misconduct charges.

“It seems the NYPD took this seriously, and I’m glad they did that,” said Councilman Jumaane Williams, who goes to the parade every year to celebrate his parents’ Grenadian heritage.

“It was disheartening [to read those comments], but was it necessarily surprising?”

Williams asked.

date in New Hampshire backed down from a suggestion he would use “deadly force” to stop doctors from performing abortions, saying he “let his imagination get out of control.”

Frank Szabo, who is running for sheriff in Hillsborough County, caused a uproar with his threats to crack down on legal abortion with arrests, prosecution and actions aimed at doctors.

“Deadly force is always a last resort,” Szabo said in a TV interview on Wednesday.

“Why would anyone object to the use of deadly force to prevent the murder of an unborn human?” REUTERS

Police were called to King’s home on June 17 by his fiance, Cynthia Kelly, who told authorities she was awakened by a noise to find him at the bottom of the pool.

Rodney King was in a drugand alcohol-induced “delirium” when he accidentally drowned in his pool, coroners ruled on Thursday.

The final autopsy report was issued by medical examiners in San Bernardino County two months after King, 47, was found submerged at the deep end of a swimming pool at his home in Rialto, a suburb about 50 miles east of Los Angeles.

The death was ruled an accidental drowning, and listed “alcohol and multiple drug toxicity” as contributing causes, Rialto police Captain Randy De Anda told Reuters.

He said coroners found cocaine, PCP and marijuana in King’s body.

“Our investigation is now concluded,” De Anda said.

he past week and a half has seen a number of musicians publicly complaining about their involuntary association with politicians. Responses have been uniformly biting and mostly funny. Last Wednesday, the Silversun Pickups issued a statement to the Romney campaign about the inappropriate use of their song “Panic Switch.”

“We don’t like people going behind our backs, using our music without asking, and we don’t like the Romney campaign,” wrote singer Brian Aubert. “We’re nice, approachable people. We won’t bite. Unless you’re Mitt Romney!”

Last Thursday, Tom Morello of Rage Against the Machine wrote an open letter via Rolling Stone to Romney’s running mate Paul Ryan, who said Rage was one of his favorite bands.

“Paul Ryan’s love of Rage Against the Machine is amusing,” wrote Morello, “because he is the embodiment of the machine that our music has been raging against for two decades.”

And just this Tuesday, Dee Snider of Twisted Sister asked Ryan to stop playing his band’s “We’re Not Gonna Take It.” “There is almost nothing on which I agree with Paul Ryan,” Snider told a Talking Points Memo reporter, “except perhaps the use of the P90X.” PAT HEALY

We’re not gonna take it Musicians who deny candidates from using their music is not a new thing.

In the 1964 presidential campaign, Republican candidate Barry Goldwater wanted to use “Hello Dolly” and change the words to “Hello Barry.” Upon learning that the song was being appropriated for rallies, the show’s producer, David Merrick, an outspoken Democrat, reportedly approached the campaign and said they were violating copyright law.

Word got out to the campaign of Goldwater’s opponent, Lyndon Johnson, and they tapped Carol Channing, who was playing the lead in “Dolly,” to record “Hello Lyndon.” No one complained.

In 1984, when Ronald Reagan mentioned Bruce Springsteen in a speech, the musician was very quick to publicly distance himself from the president.

In 1988, when George Bush ran for president, he used Bobby McFerrin’s hit “Don’t Worry, Be Happy,” and quickly received a cease and desist.

In 1996, Bob Dole tried to pull a “Hello Dolly” and turn Sam and Dave’s “Soul Man” into “Dole Man.” The publisher of

the song threatened to sue.

Tom Petty sent George W. Bush a cease and desist order for using “I Won’t Back Down” in his campaign in 2000. Petty later performed the song at the house of Al Gore after he gave his concession speech when Bush was determined the winner of the election.

In 2008, John McCain’s music choices seemed humorously self-aware, employing ABBA’s “Take a Chance on Me” and Jackson Browne’s “Running on Empty.” But the musicians weren’t exactly in on the joke, and in the only instance of a presidential candidate being sued by a musician, a California District Court ruled in favor of Browne, forcing McCain

to pay up. McCain also unsuccessfully tried to use songs by Heart, Foo Fighters, Van Halen and John Mellencamp.

Republicans aren’t the only ones to get in trouble for their music choices. In 2008, when Barack Obama used Sam and Dave’s soul classic, “Hold On, I’m Coming” at appearances, singer Sam Moore (he who also objected to the use of “Dole Man”) asked Obama to stop. The singer didn’t endorse Obama, but said, “It is thrilling, in my lifetime, to see that our country has matured to the place where it is no longer an impossibility for a man of color to really be considered as a legitimate candidate for the highest office.”

After Mean Irene canceled last year’s event, the celebration of alternative black culture is back and better than ever with a packed lineup of marquee bands

here were you a year ago this weekend? If you lived in one of the five boroughs, you were probably holed up in your apartment, hiding from Hurricane Irene.

That was also the case for the organizers of Brooklyn’s Afropunk festival, who first had to make the heartbreaking decision to cancel the event.

“We were literally in the park and it was all built and we had to pull it all out,” says Matthew Morgan, who cofounded the Afropunk organization in 2002. Canceling the two-day event nearly crushed the group because of the amount of expenses Mean Irene racked up. Taking such a hit left the coordinators discouraged and just a bit heartbroken.

“When something like that happens, you ask yourself, as I do every year, ‘Why are we doing this?’” Morgan says. “But we cobble it together and make it work because what it is, is bigger than us.”

Morgan and his colleagues founded the festival as a means of exposing city kids to a vibrant but underrepresented current of African-American culture.

Situating the festival in Commodore Barry Park, which, Morgan notes, is sandwiched between two of the largest public housing projects in Brooklyn, the hope is that impressionable kids will have a mindbroadening experience when they enjoy not just the music, but the skate competition, art wall, thrift market, biker competition and newly added food trucks that are a part of the event.

“It was in a Jay-Z song, where he talks about living 20 minutes from Central Park but not knowing that it existed.

These kids have all this stuff around them — food truck festivals in Park Slope, parks and all this stuff in the city — they can be three blocks from it and not know that it exists,” Morgan says. “It’s really exciting to put all that in front of the 15, 16, 19 [and] 20 year olds and have them experience it for the first time.”

We spoke with book writer Joe Dipietro about tackling the project of making what’s old seem new again on Broadway.

How did you get involved with “Nice Work�?

The Gershwin estate called me because they had been trying to develop a new musical comedy for a while. ‌ They wanted to do a real 1920s musical comedy — which is what the Gershwins were known for. And I thought, oh my God, I love this genre.

I’m the guy for this, I really

You weren’t worried it would seem dated?

The Gershwin music is timeless. ‌ [It] still stands up the best. George Gershwin was sort of the rock star of his day. You can tell just in the rhythm and the joy of his music, there’s a lot similar to a Gershwin tune and contemporary rock ’n’ roll.

[But] the original comedies were written of their day —

And today’s audiences are still embracing these kinds of plays?

they were very flimsy, they wrote two or three a year because they never expected them to last. So they would throw in jugglers and dog acts and the producer’s girlfriend and whatever they wanted to do, just this sort of formless entertainment.

Did the estate already know the Gershwins’ “Porgy and Bess� was also heading to Broadway?

Oh, no, no, no. We’re next-door

The creative teams really try to make both shows seem as fresh and relevant as possible. Neither seems musty, or like a revival, or a new old musical just for that sake. They both seem to speak to us in these times. If either of them just seemed oldfashioned and nostalgic, I don’t think either of them would be doing as well as they are!

Real-life and onscreen couple Dax Shepard and Kristen Bell helm the team behind “Hit and Run.�

‘Hit and Run’ Grade: –—˜™š Dax Shepard stars as an ex-getaway driver who leaves behind the safety of witness protection to accompany his girlfriend (Kristen Bell) on a job interview to Los Angeles. Unfortunately, as he hits the road so does his former partner in crime (Bradley Cooper). Shepard and Bell are a couple in real life, and the chemistry between them shows. When it’s just the two of them onscreen, “Hit and Run� has the makings of a fun, romantic action-adventure. Unfortunately the movie is also populated by peripheral characters with the combined charm of a slap (stick) to the face.

Want to make jam, but don’t have the Ball (jar)s? Laena McCarthy’s new book aims to demystify canning for urban cooks

t happens about this time every year. Confronted with a bounty of fresh fruit, we think, “This is the year I make my own jam.” But we never do. Whether it’s fear of contamination or lack of kitchen space, something always stops us short of, ahem, sealing the deal.

To help quell our fears, we turned to Brooklyn-based jammer Laena McCarthy, founder of Anarchy in a Jar (www.anarchyinajar.com) and author of the new book “Jam On: The Craft of Canning Fruit.”

McCarthy had the advantage of watching her mother make jam from local produce and garden herbs in upstate New York. Her personal technique, she says, is a blend of traditional American and European styles that reduces cooking time as well as the amount of added sugar, “slowly but

surely letting the fruit do the work.” The result is a freshertasting jam that lends itself to both sweet and savory applications, including meat glazes and even cocktails — her grapefruit and smoked salt jam is excellent stirred into a little gin and soda water.

“Jam On” guides first-time canners through the process of preserving, from choosing raw fruits to creating complex, whiskey-spiked jellies, jams, butters and chutneys.

Ready to jam? McCarthy recommends starting out with her book’s “3’s Company Triple Berry Jam” recipe.

“It’s pretty foolproof,” she says. “The berries only cook for a short amount of time, so the whole process is very quick. ... It’s pretty hard to screw up.”

On Sept. 12, Beanie Sigel is due to report to prison for a twoyear stay for tax evasion. Even though the Philly rapper pleaded guilty to failing to pay around $350,000 on unreported income, he’s not going quietly.

In fact, Sigel has a perfectly good explanation for not filing between 2003-2005: “The years that they charged me for failure to file taxes is years that I

was incarcerated,” he tells MTV of his previous stint for weapons and drug charges.

“When you’re incarcerated in a federal facility, you’re not allowed to conduct any business at all.”

That’s a little like being late for work because your bartender was moving slow. But sure — we’ve been there. The thing is, Sigel doesn’t really intend to pay up no matter where

The letter writers forgot history. When minorities tried to lead normal lives, or when a woman complained about abuse, they were the ones who were vilified.

Hunter loses tackle spot to Howard After spending much of the last year blaming right tackle Wayne Hunter for their woes, Jets fans now have to find a new whipping boy.

On Thursday morning, head coach Rex Ryan announced Hunter is no longer the team’s starting right tackle and that Austin Howard will be given a shot at the job.

“I know he’s been heavily criticized,” Ryan said of Hunter. “Was he perfect as a starting tackle? No, but you know what? Nobody is perfect.”

The third preseason game is a bit of an early Christmas present for football fans. Expect most of the starters to play a half, with many going well into the third quarter. If the Jets perform well during this stretch, it will show the true identity of the team more than the first two preseason games.

Rookie David Wilson’s role is increasing

Starter Ahmad Bradshaw has been nursing a bruised hand, which has opened the door for David Wilson to run with the starters in practice all week.

Wilson was admittedly “nervous, very nervous” in the two sessions as the No. 1 tailback. That was just in practice, so hopefully by game time, the jitters will be gone.

Wilson, the team’s first-round pick from Virginia Tech, has shown flashes of his elite athleticism in practice and the first two exhibition games, but has also looked tentative at times. Friday’s game is the “dress rehearsal” game, which means the vaunted Bears defense will be out there for a majority of the game. Now is the time for Wilson to shine and lock up the spot as Bradshaw’s clear backup.

Mets blow McHugh win Collin McHugh gave the Mets seven shutout innings in his MLB debut.

But it was the same old story as the bullpen came in and blew it.

McHugh left the game with it tied 0-0, before Bobby Parnell came in to pitch in the eighth inning and allowed the game-winning run on three hits. The Mets were swept in four games by the Rockies. METRO

Jones will likely fight Lyoto Machida on Sept. 22 in what was supposed to be UFC 152. METRO

Victor Cruz will do Victor Cruz things, but Hakeem Nicks (foot) might not even play.

That means one of the other, non-descript wideouts needs to step up and take hold of the opportunity. Domenik Hixon got the first crack and has been steady but nowhere near as spectacular as the guy he’s trying to replace — Mario Manningham. The shifty Jerrel Jernigan has bigplay potential but hasn’t separated himself. And rookie Rueben Randle has done what most high-round first-year players do — look great at times and lost at others.

The Giants have had at least 12 guys not dress due to injury in each of their first two preseason games, making it difficult to have a set rotation on both sides of the ball.

Left tackle Will Beatty (back) has yet to even practice.

Weakside linebacker Michael Boley (hamstring) missed last week’s game and may not play again on Friday.

And even key reserves like cornerbacks Jayron Hosley (foot) and Michael Coe (hamstring) continue to be hit or miss during practice sessions. Every team deals with camp ailments, but it seems like the past two preseasons have been unusually tough on Big Blue. TONY WILLIAMS

Rogers gone Tennessee’s All-SEC receiver and likely first-round pick Da’rick Rogers has been suspended indefinitely and will likely miss the year.

The Volunteers announced Rogers was suspended for multiple violations of the school’s substance abuse policy.

Rogers, a junior, had 67 catches and 1,040 yards with nine touchdowns last season.
