Fight for Smokin’ Joe Temple University professor and architectural student already have one victory under their belts Now they are battling to protect it forever from demolition or future exterior overhauls More than a year ago, Dennis Playdon was preparing to teach an introduction to architectural preservation course at Temple University when he stumbled upon the perfect project for his students: saving Joe Frazier’s Gym in North Philadelphia.

Playdon, an adjunct professor at Temple’s Tyler School of Art, came up with the idea after seeing a “for sale” sign on the landmark three-story building on North Broad Street near Glenwood Avenue where Frazier’s name still can be seen etched overhead.

“I was astounded to see a ‘for sale’ sign on it because I always assumed since he was a huge champion in the world he was well-off,” Playdon said.

“The alarming thing to me was, how could such a famous gym maybe be on the verge of being demolished or sold? It seemed to be unbelievable that the sports world hadn’t jumped in.”

Playdon said he sent a letter to Frazier, but because of the boxing legend’s illness at the time there was no response. He tried sending pictures of the gym, which houses a furniture store on the ground floor, to sports magazines, but that didn’t work. Playdon then had some of his students nominate the building to the Preservation Alliance of Greater Philadelphia’s Endangered Properties List, which accepted it. That designation helped to catch the eye of the National Trust for Historic Preservation, which listed the building on its Endangered Properties list in June.

Some of Playdon’s students are in the process of submitting an application for the Philadelphia Register for Historic Places, which would protect the building from demolition or major changes to the exterior by any future owner.

The work by the Temple students would serve as another posthumous tribute to the

Philadelphia icon, who died last year at age 67 after a bout with liver cancer.

Earlier this month, the city and Frazier’s family formally announced plans to erect a statue at Xfinity Live by the end of 2013.

Frazier’s management company purchased the former manufacturing and lumber warehouse in the late 1960s and converted it to a gym.

He not only spent time there training for his classic fights against Muhammad Ali, but opened it to the neighborhood. In 2008, Frazier lost the gym because of back taxes.

“It’s about preserving the memory of a gold medalist, Olympic boxer, someone who was very active in the community as far as outreach,” said senior Michael Baker, who’s worked on the project. “It’s about preserving his memory and his legacy and what he did for the city.”

Germany: Philly man was guard at Auschwitz

Germany has opened a war crimes investigation into an 87year-old Czechoslovakian-born man who currently lives in Northeast Philadelphia. The country is saying he served as an SS guard at the Auschwitz death camp during World War II, according to a report from the Associated Press.

The German office in charge of handling Nazi war crimes has reportedly recommended to prosecutors that retired toolmaker Johann “Hans� Breyer be extradited to Germany and tried as an accessory to the murder of at least 344,000 Jews at the Auschwitz II-Birkenau camp in occupied Poland.

A source told the AP that officials in the Bavarian town of Weiden, who have jurisdiction over the case, are deciding now whether the evidence against Breyer is sufficient for prosecution. Breyer admitted to the AP that he was a guard at Auschwitz during World War II, but claimed that he worked outside the facility. He also testified at a previous court hearing that he served at Auschwitz I, which was largely used for slave labor, not at Auschwitz II, where much of the wholesale slaughter occurred. The hear-

The Justice Department lost that fight when a judge in 2003 ruled that Breyer had joined the SS as a minor, was recruited at the age of 17 and was not legally responsible for his participation in the army. Supporting that finding was Breyer’s claim that he deserted his post at Auschwitz in August 1944.

But per a U.S. Army intelligence file obtained by the AP, a 1951 background check of Breyer conducted when he first applied for a U.S. visa listed him as a member of an SS battalion in Auschwitz as late as four months after he said he deserted. Breyer could, under U.S. law, face extradition to Germany if prosecutors charge him.

new kind of museum is asking Philadelphia to give peace a chance.

The Envision Peace Museum, slated to open its Center City doors in 2014, will feature interactive exhibits about social justice. And it boasts bigname advisory board members like Judy Wicks, Alan Greenberger and Ben and Jerry’s cofounder Ben Cohen. Director Michael Gagne spoke with Metro last week.

A big part of it was the idea of building a space for people to ask better questions about how change happens in our society, the roots of violence and where we’re going. The first chair of the board, [architect and museum planner] Tony Junker, went into a museum bookshop just after the start of the second Gulf War. ... And he noticed all these books about our nation’s military history, particularly geared toward children. He found himself asking, ‘How can we break the cycle if these are the stories we tell ourselves about ourselves all the time?’

And as someone who came from a museum field, he realized we have [thousands] of military museums throughout the country, but very few dedicated to peace and justice in the world.

What will the “What is Peace” exhibit consist of?

I see that exhibit, which is just being developed, as kind of a skeleton key to unlock the larger content of the museum.

“What is Peace” will be a touchstone allowing us explore what

What’s your timeline for development?

Right now, we’re seeing this as a phased development strategy similar to the Please Touch Museum, where you open a smaller space and use it as a touchstone to launch a large space.

We plan to open our first space in 2014.

A senior Iranian lawmaker accused the head of the United Nations' nuclear watchdog yesterday of passing confidential information about Iran's nuclear activities to Israel.

In the latest sign of strained relations with the International Atomic Energy Agency, Javad Jahangirzadeh, a member of parliament’s presiding board, said IAEA chief Yukiya Amano would be to blame if Iran reduced its ties with the body.

“If the agency’s actions lead to Iran cutting cooperation with this international body, all responsibility will be with the IAEA director general.”

Iran denied its hackers attacked American banks, the semi-official Fars news agency reported yesterday, following a Reuters report that three of the largest American lenders were repeatedly targeted over the past year.

The hacking of websites and corporate networks at Bank of America Corp, JPMorgan Chase & Co. and Citigroup Inc. began in late 2011 and escalated this year, people familiar with the situation told Reuters.

“We officially announce that we haven’t had any attacks,” head of Iran’s civil defense agency Gholam Reza Jalali told Fars.

Reuters reported the hackers targeted the three banks in retaliation for their enforcement of Western economic sanctions against Iran’s disputed nuclear program. Iran says the program is aimed at generating electricity. REUTERS

ut geckos have one of the most amazing adaptations in the animal kingdom. The bottom of their feet isn’t sticky, but covered in tiny hairs like a rug. Each hair has up to 1,000 split ends. A single gecko has around two billion split-end tips.

When these creatures walk on a leaf, the atoms in the tip of each hair come close to the atoms in the leaf. When an atom in one object comes close to an atom in another, there’s a tiny attractive force like unimaginably small magnets. This is happening now between your body and everything you touch. Humans don’t notice because there aren’t enough atoms in our rough skin close to other surfaces.

A gecko’s two billion hairs achieve such a high level of contact, there is enough attraction between foot atoms and leaf atoms to support the gecko’s weight, even with a sin-

gle toe. They lift their feet by literally peeling the atoms in their toes away from atoms in other objects.

This atomic adaptation allows these creatures to run up the smoothest surfaces known to man without slipping. Geckos don’t hold onto objects by friction, but by the total attractive force of atoms in close proximity. cientists can now mimic the fibers on the bottom of a gecko’s foot artificially.

Manipulating the number of hairs increases or decreases the amount of atoms in close proximity and strength of the material. A single piece of the strongest manmade gecko foot attracts atoms so strongly, a sticky-note sized piece can hold a weight of 660 pounds.

This means soon you will soon say goodbye to Velcro or nailing a TV to the wall.

These materials will replace many of the adhesives in everyday life. This is a consequence resulting from a study of geckos walking on leaves. That is a true story of gecko feet. The world is not what it seems.

But Democrats’ rhetoric about a “war on women” has created doubt in the minds of white women about supporting the Republican ticket, hurting presidential nominee Mitt Romney with a demographic he must win.

That that’s an entitlement. And the government should give it to them. And they will vote for this president no matter what. ... These are people who pay no income tax.”

If all those so-called discouraged jobseekers had remained in the labor force, August’s jobless rate of 8.1 percent would have been 10.5 percent. The jobs crisis spurred the Federal Reserve last week to launch a new bond-buying program and promise to keep it running until the labor market improves.

The labor force participation rate, or the proportion of working-age Americans who have a job or are looking for one, has fallen by an unprecedented 2.5 percentage points since December 2007, slumping to a 31-year low of 63.5 percent.

Romney gets big fish bucks in Calif.

orse than most off-the-cuff remarks, that quote is a mess of overlapping, but very different, demographics, ideas and statistics. Let’s untangle them a bit.

First off, Romney seems dead accurate on his estimation of how many Americans will support Obama this fall. Gallup has Romney and Obama both pegged at 47 percent in its latest poll.

But, even though 46 percent of Americans pay no federal income tax, not only do many of those same Americans pay payroll taxes, but many of them, including the working poor and senior citizens, are probably going to vote for Romney this fall. These people are not victims, and Romney should not write them off.

Romney is much more on target when he suggests that Americans are dependent on government like never before. According to the Census Bureau, 49 percent of Americans currently live in a household where at least one person received some type of government benefit.

According to the 2012 Trustees Report, the Social Security system is already paying out $165 billion more in benefits than it will take in in taxes this year. The same is true for the Medicare Parts A, B, and D — programs that were $225 billion in the red.

Instead of fixing this existing entitlement fiscal disaster, Obama chose to create a brand-new one.

hese numbers show why Obama’s legislative affairs director, Rob Nabors, admitted to Bob Woodward, “You could raise all the taxes you want on millionaires ... and it would never raise enough.”

The kernel of truth behind Romney’s riff on the 47 percent is that our country simply can’t afford Obama’s spending plans without massive tax hikes on everyone ... even those who are currently struggling to get by while paying no income taxes at all.

Last Wednesday, the “Twilight� star popped up at Helen Mills, a theater and event space in New York, to launch his latest endeavor: Being the enthusiastic spokesperson for iD Gum, a new brand of the chewy stuff which is geared to teens. “Who would have thought 10, 20, 50 years ago that gum would be an accessory? Now it is. Now it’s cool to show that you have gum versus hiding a piece of gum for your breath. Now it’s like, ‘Oh you’ve got some iD Gum?,’� the actor asked philosophically.

In the pre-taped opener, an over-botoxed Kimmel received a morale boost from an all-star cast of nominated funny ladies and presenters — including a naked Lena Dunham eating a birthday cake on a toilet — primping backstage for TV’s biggest night. ‘‘Training Day” screenwriter David Ayers is making his directorial debut with the police thriller “End of Watch,” but he says he was unfazed by the enormous task of capturing the Los Angeles Police Department — thanks mostly to his familiarity with the landscape. “It’s the city I came of age in. I know it like the back of my hand,” Ayers says. “I wanted to go at this like it was a documentary. It’s as real as possible. It ended up a labor of love.”

He apparently knows the LAPD like the back of his hand as well. Between writing “Training Day” and “SWAT” and helming “End of Watch,” Ayers has a clear affinity for Los Angeles’ finest. “I think the LAPD is a fascinating institution with incredible history,” he says. “They set the benchmark for the rest of the country.”

Taking on the role of one of the two officers at the center of the film, Jake Gyllenhaal felt he owed it to the real LAPD officers he met to live as they do in order to capture their essence.

“We did five months of ridealongs, two to three nights a week,” Gyllenhaal says of his time spent with real LAPD officers. “What’s behind the badge

is a real human being and the relationships they have.”

Playing the other side of that bond is Michael Pena, who says he knows what makes a good police film: “partners who click.”

“In ‘Training Day,’ if Ethan Hawke and Denzel Washington don’t have that connection, it doesn’t work,” Pena says, though he admits it took a while for him and Gyllenhaal to find that connection themselves. “We did not get along that well in the beginning. We knew that there was that brotherhood that we needed in order to make this work. It was written right in the script. Damn!

his past weekend I attended the Women and Power conference at the Omega Institute in Rhinebeck, N.Y. I was blessed to hear from leaders like Sally Field, Eve Ensler, Majora Carter and many more. Whether you’re a woman or a man, I think you’ll benefit from the discussions held there.

In the invocation speech, Omega’s founder, Elizabeth Lesser, raved about the lineup of speakers and all of the empowering voices she’s encountered throughout her career, including Nobel Peace Prize winners, spiritual leaders and world-renowned activists. Look-

ing into the crowd, she said, “These leaders are no different than you are. We all have insecurities about speaking our truth and we’re all just making it up as we go along.�

This message resonated with me deeply. As a speaker and author I am out in the world sharing my voice and expressing it fully. Though I’ve

created a platform for speaking my truth, I still have moments when I question my right to speak up. This weekend at Omega I realized I’m not alone.

Field spoke of her fear of greatness, Carter admitted her fear of speaking about leadership and Ensler spoke of her need to be accepted. As I listened to some of the world’s greatest leaders share their deep-rooted fears, I realized we’re all in it together. In some way or another, we all question our right to claim our voice and share our beliefs with the world. Lesser calls this “imposter syndrome,� the feeling of, “How dare I speak up? How dare I claim my

power?� Our inner voice of fear, the imposter voice, holds us back and blocks us from owning our opinion, our voice and our power.

ur power cannot come from an outside credential — it must come from an internal condition. Carter said it best: “Listen to the voices that are telling you that you are powerful. It’s your duty to share that.�

Rather than see ourselves as separate from the world’s great leaders, we must accept that we’re all in this together. As Lesser said, “No one is sure, no one has the answer, but we

The goal is to get you on board at the lower end of the scale, but women need to be gutsy enough to say, “I would love to join the organization, but I was hoping for X salary.�

We are hearing about extremely successful female leaders, including Sheryl Sandberg (COO of Facebook) and Marissa Mayer (president and CEO of Yahoo!).

What do you think made them successful?

I think they’re wonderful models in that they seem to say there is no one best model for female success today. Sheryl Sandberg has said she leaves at 5 every day and has cried at work. That works for her.

Marissa Mayer is starting a new job at seven months pregnant and that works for her. But those strategies may not necessarily work for you. I accepted a new and challenging job when I was seven months pregnant and though it worked out OK in the end. I wouldn’t do it over again. Take inspiration from other women, study their strategies, but ultimately create your own blueprint based on your job, your needs, your family, etc.

Yelling, insults, unprofessional e-mails: It’s not hard to spot the mean boss. But what if you are the boss? There’s a difference between being a hard-toplease supervisor and shortfused tyrant. If you’re losing your cool, maybe it’s time to re-evaluate your techniques.

Get to the source It’s time to figure out what’s really eating away at you. “Mean bosses need to understand at a very deep level what the triggers are that prompt yelling, insulting and other forms of torture,� explains Nancy A. Shenker, career advisor and co-author of “Don’t Hook Up With the Dude in the Next Cube.� Additionally, she advises evaluating your employees and accepting that you could be part of the problem: Do you have them in the right positions? Could you

have trained them better?

You can’t expect to be a grumpy boss and not burn a few bridges. “There is never a reason to be a nasty boss,� says Leslie Austin, an executive coach at Austin Consulting. “It’s bad business, creates bad blood and is always counterproductive to real productivity. And it’s the fastest way to kill off any sense of cooperation or teamwork in an office group.�

Take responsibility If you want to fix your reputation as a mean boss, start by addressing the problem. “Meet with unhappy employees,� suggests Amy Lieberman, author of “Mediation Success.� “Acknowledge you could have handled a situation better, and apologize. When we are asked to forgive, we are more likely to consider bending.�

round 2007, Yolanda Eisenstein starting looking for a way to put her law degree to work for a humanitarian cause. “I wanted to start my own practice. I discovered an emerging area of the law, animal law, that really interested me, because I had always been an animal advocate,� she explains. “I really had no idea that I could use my law degree in that area.�

Today Eisenstein has her own animal law practice in Dallas, Tex., where she specializes in pet trusts, nonprofit law for advocacy groups and wrongful death litigation.

Recently, Eisenstein authored “Careers in Animal Law: Welfare, Protection, and Advocacy,� the first guidebook of its kind released by the American Bar Association. “Careers in An-

imal Law� provides outside-thebox ideas on finding work in the field, from government positions and public policy analysis, to nonprofits and private practice. The book also in-

cludes 13 extended profiles of lawyers who specialize in animal law.

Eisenstein readily admits that animal advocacy is not currently the most profitable area of the law, but she sees it as one of the fastest-growing fields in the profession. “I see a lot of comparisons to environmental law. When it started, most in the profession thought these lawyers were just a bunch of ‘tree-huggers,’ and no one saw it as a lucrative area of the law,� she says. “But look at it now: It’s become a very established, recognized area of the law. Unless you’re my age, you don’t even remember a time when environmental law wasn’t taken seriously.�

And he did have a plan, but when a congressman of the opposing party yells “Liar!” during the very first State of the Union address and the leader of the opposing party in the Senate states, “The single most important thing we want to achieve is for President Obama to be a one-term president,” what chance do his plans have? No one did that to Bush — even though

Nothing could be farther from the truth.

Some of Romney’s ventures were successes (can’t name all due to space limitations — Staples, Sports Authority and Domino’s certainly come to mind), and some were failures, but this is natural for any business that takes a risk.

Everyone in the building knew Mike Vick was dropping back to pass. So the quarterback couldn’t have been that surprised when Cardinals safety Kerry Rhodes plowed into him off the left edge, causing a disastrous fumble that was returned 93 yards for a touchdown.

“It was a situation where I should have been looking to get the ball out of my hands if things weren’t there,” Vick said.

It’s been like the film “Groundhog Day� whenever Lee pitches in 2012. Lee typically tosses a gem with no margin for error and then loses, particularly at Citizens Bank Park, where he has won only a pair of games this season.

The frustration mounts for Lee and the desperate Phillies, who need a miracle to make the playoffs after losing to the Braves 2-1 Sunday afternoon while the Cardinals beat the Cubs.

Lee, who struck out eleven in eight innings, was very good.

Halladay unlikely to start Thursday May be in Phillies’ best interests to shut down Doc Ace coming off one of worst starts of his career GETTY IMAGES

Apparently it’s not a done deal that Roy Halladay will start Thursday night’s home finale against the Washington Nationals. According to the press notes, Kyle Kendrick was moved up to pitch Wednesday night. Thursday night is listed as TBA (to be announced). With the Phillies’ playoff chances diminishing, it wouldn’t be surprising to see Tyler Cloyd start on fan appreciation night. The rookie would be starting on extra rest.

Halladay was rocked Saturday afternoon by the Braves. He gave up seven runs in an inning and two-thirds, the second shortest of his enviable career.

The baseball world was wondering what was up with Halladay, who was on the disabled list for eight weeks with a right lat strain. Well, the 2010 Cy Young Award winner shed some light on what might have affected his dismal performance after Saturday’s game.

He admitted that he has had some spasms behind his right shoulder blade over the last few days. That prompted Doc
