First, Samantha Pawlucy was greeted by a host of well-wishers and supporters when she returned to school this week, and now the 16-year-old received a call from the man who started it all.

A Mitt Romney campaign spokeswoman has confirmed that the Republican presidential candidate reached out to Pawlucy, who made national headlines last week after a math teacher at Charles Carroll

High School in Port Richmond humiliated her for wearing a Romney t-shirt.

Unfortunately, Pawlucy was not home when Romney called Wednesday night, but Romney spoke with her parents, according to the family’s attorney Wally Zimolong.

With a little more than four weeks until Election Day, Sen. Bob Casey has seen his lead over Republican challenger Tom Smith dwindle to single digits, according to a recent poll.

The survey from Siena College Research Institute showed the incumbent Casey with a 44-35 edge over Smith, with 16 percent of voters still undecided.

The surge from Smith, of western Pennsylvania, has coincided with him attacking Casey as “Senator Zero,” focusing on the fact that none of Casey’s proposed legislation has become law — although some have been incorporated into larger pieces of legislation passed by the Senate and Congress.

“I think it’s fairly simple, folks are starting to pay attention,” said Jim Conroy, Smith’s campaign manager, explaining the surge in the polls.

“Tom hasn’t run for statewide office before and was fairly unknown and now we’ve remedied that.”

While Smith, a successful businessman in the coal industry, has gained some name recognition, the Siena poll shows he still has a ways to go in that regard, with 47 percent of those polled saying they do not have an opinion on him, compared to just 26 percent for Casey.

A t a City Council committee hearing on Thursday, a former Philadelphia fire commissioner criticized fire department leadership in the deaths of firefighters Lt. Robert Neary and Daniel Sweeney, killed battling a Kensington warehouse fire in April.

“When you’re in command of a large event, there’s a riskbenefit ratio,” said Roger Ulshafer, who is now a consultant with the International Fire Service Training Association.

“Here, the risk was everything and there were no benefits, so they should never have been ordered into the building.”

The hearing was called to assess fire department policies and procedures and recommend improvements.

“Training is key and this has been a problem for us since station closings, then brownouts and everything else,” said firefighters union Local 22 sergeant-at-arms Glenn Johnson.

“We can only send so many people at a time to training. We have people out there losing

apartment rents surged in September, coming within 2.1 percent of the peak, as improving employment boosted competition among tenants.

Google Executive Chairman Eric Schmidt expects more than a billion mobile devices to be running its Android software within a year, intensifying a battle with Apple that he called a “defining fight” of the industry.

Vice President Joe Biden and rival Republican Paul Ryan clashed sharply over foreign policy in a high-stakes debate on Thursday, with Biden aggressively defending the Obama administration’s policies and dismissing Ryan’s criticism as “malarkey.”

Biden took the offensive early, providing the emotion and passion that President Barack Obama was criticized for lacking in last week’s debate with Republican challenger Mitt Romney.

Ryan accused the Obama administration of projecting an image of American weakness to the world.

“With all due respect, that is a bunch of malarkey,” Biden retorted, attacking Romney as “not presidential” for holding a news conference on Libya just after a U.S. diplomatic compound was attacked and the ambassador killed.

Democrats were counting on an aggressive performance from Biden to reclaim the momentum in the race for the White House after Obama’s poor showing led to Romney taking the lead in polls with less than four weeks before the Nov. 6 election.

erhaps the speech just wasn’t meant to be taken seriously. After all, that ludicrous phony accent he adopted had less the feeling of a political address than of an Amos n’ Andy episode — you know, that old radio show in which white actors faked black accents. But politicians “of the center” don’t tolerate a Jeremiah Wright, not even for show, much less praise him. The Democrat that can claim to be a “man of the center” — and I can’t believe I’m writing this — is former President Bill Clinton, who at least had the guts to call rapper Sistah Soulja on her inflammatory comments when he was running for president.

e used the “scar” analogy throughout his speech. The Los Angeles riots were a “scar” on society, showing us that poverty still exists. Hurricane Katrina and the federal government’s response was another “scar,” according to Obama. All this talk of scars left me convinced, more than ever, that Obama’s “innocuous to average white ears” speech was nothing more than a rip-off of a Malcolm X quote from decades ago. It’s in Malcolm X’s autobiography, a book I’ve criticized for being light on the bio and way too heavy on the auto. But in it, Malcolm criticized those whites — and blacks — who were always quick to point out some progress in race relations that Malcolm felt wasn’t really progress at all.

“If you have a knife in a man’s back,” Malcolm said, “it isn’t progress if you take the knife out a couple of inches. Even if you take the knife all the way out, it’s still going to leave a scar.” So Obama’s “scar” theme wasn’t even original. And, at the conclusion of it, he tried to claim a history that isn’t his.

“Black folks won’t forget. We won’t forget what happened 19 months ago, 15 years ago or 300 years ago.”

Ben Affleck on trying to transcend his ‘Boston Guy’ image As a director, he’s headed in a new direction — literally — to the Middle East to do a movie about people pretending to do a movie

Affleck may appear lost in this scene, but he seemed to know where he was going with “Argo.”

“Argo” winks at its audience a few times, but in its boldest instance, John Goodman’s character summarizes Hollywood’s stupidity for Ben Affleck’s character by telling him, “You could teach a rhesus monkey to be a director in a day.”

It’s a funny moment in a serious film, and it seems like the sort of self-effacing joke that Affleck, as director, might’ve advised his actor to say on the fly.

“That one was in, that Chris Terrio did,” clarifies Affleck, giving credit to the screenwriter. “I think all writers on some level hate directors, so I think he was a little bit like, ‘I don’t know, if you don’t like the rhesus monkey thing,’ and I was like, ‘It’s genius!’”

At this point, Affleck throws his hands in the air and his voice takes on a comically higher pitch. In person, he is a combination of confidence and uncertainty, which is why it would make sense that he

“I’m really glad I made this movie,” he says of “Argo,” “so I could say, ‘OK, I can go make a Boston movie now and not feel

totally pigeonholed.’ And [the Bulger story is] an amazing story. ... It’s a really tough story because it’s so long. And I really want to do the whole span. … I want to go from Alcatraz and when they experimented on him with LSD and all the way ending up in the farmers market in Santa Monica and he’s 83 years old. So it’s tricky to have it not be fact, fact, fact, fact, fact, and get that far and also have resonance. ... I will direct it, Matt will star in it, my brother will play Billy.”

might have tossed a line about monkeys directing into a movie that he’s directing. “Argo” is a little bit like a Russian nesting doll in this way, as there are so many components within one another. It’s a true story that’s a movie within a movie. Affleck plays a CIA operative who saved American diplomats trapped in Iran during the hostage crisis by pretending they were in the country only to do location scouting for a science-fiction film.

“This would have been the worst movie ever made if it weren’t true,” says Affleck. “It would just seem completely absurd.”

The stakes are high in “Argo” because if anyone learns the truth about the diplomats as they leave Iran, they’ll all be killed. And the stakes are high for Affleck because although he has directed two successful films — “Gone Baby Gone” and “The Town” — this is his first

one outside of his hometown.

“I felt like I had something to prove because everyone just thought of me as ‘Boston Guy,’” he says.

Throughout a half-hour discussion, Affleck gives credit to almost everybody who worked on the movie but himself, from the costume designer to the extras, and especially his actors.

“John Ford said, ‘Directing is 90 percent casting,’ and I think in this movie, that was even maybe a little bit higher,” he says, almost as if making “Argo” was the same sort of traumatic and triumphant team effort that the story was based on.

“It was scary,” he says. “It was hard and I was nervous, just because I saw my future career being kind of dictated by it. But I’m a little bit neurotic.”

Ben Affleck comes into his own with ‘Argo’

In this economy, it’s hard to change career paths. One of the better options for advancement would be to stick with what you know, while gradually dipping your toes into something new. Take Ben Affleck: With his last two directorial efforts, he’s been building his résumé as a director. With “Argo” it’s clear that he’s ready to go full-time.

In each of his films, he’s stepped further outside his comfort zone: For 2009’s “Gone Baby Gone,” he stayed behind the camera, putting his brother Casey Affleck in the lead. With “The Town” he did double duty as lead and director. And in “Argo,” he moves beyond his native environs of Boston to take on a complex international incident in the Middle East.

The title “Argo” refers to a science fiction film that was never intended to be made. In the midst of the Iranian hostage crisis that started in 1979, six Americans found refuge in the Canadian Ambassador’s home. As an “ex-filtration” specialist for the CIA, Tony Mendez (Affleck) is charged with hatching a plan to get them out. He concocts a plot to have the six pose as Canadian location scouts for said film, employing a Holly-

timed, the tension is ratcheted up at an intuitive pace and he has a Scorsese-like command of the soundtrack. He’s also proven to be skilled at casting — especially in selecting Alan Arkin, who delivers some hilariously withering lines in a way that only Arkin can.

All in all, if one day Ben Affleck decides that acting isn’t for him, he’s got a solid backup plan. And his talent for filmmaking may just eclipse the skills that made him famous in the first place.

the story unravels, so too does Ellison’s sanity as he begins to get closer to revealing the truth about the tragedy that occurred in the house.

It’s not often that we see a film of this genre with a wellwritten script. Scott Derrickson, who previously co-wrote and directed “The Exorcism of Emily Rose,” and C. Robert Cargill, an established film critic and novelist, have crafted a screenplay that combines both horror and humor without being campy, which is a rare find.

“Sinister” has all the elements of the horror genre, without the cheesy one-liners, tacky effects and campy story lines. The ending of the film is quite unexpected — and in true horror style, it leaves room for a sequel. OLIVIA MORROW

His characters live in a suburb of Quentin Tarantino’s metropolis — just as strange and witty, but a little softer in the gut. They care, which elevates this film above the usual dystopian black comedy — except that it’s also devastatingly funny. METRO/HP

oody Harrelson is not a violent man, but he’ll happily play one onscreen — especially if it’s for writer-director Martin McDonagh. In McDonagh’s latest, “Seven Psychopaths,” Harrelson stars as a crime boss at the end of his rope after his beloved shih tzu is dognapped by some petty con men (played by Christopher Walken and Sam Rockwell). For Harrelson, the role meant finally correcting a previous mistake: turning down the chance to work for McDonagh.

The movie offers several definitions of a psychopath.

What made you want to work with Martin?

Well, I’ve been a fan of his for quite a long time, before he made any movies. And then we stayed friends, and at the time he was writing this play called “Pillowman,” and then he offered me the lead role, the one that Billy Crudup ended up playing. I read it and I thought, well, it’s too bad. This guy is such a genius, and he’s always great at this ability to juxtapose light and dark in such a way that it just makes you laugh. And in this case I felt like the dark had overpowered the light, so I didn’t do the play. And I went and saw it and I was just like, “This is one of the best productions I’ve ever seen. Of anything.” So I was really pissed at myself for not doing that.

Now, I certainly wasn’t going to pass up the chance to work with him again.

Woody the animal lover Being a dog lover himself, it wasn’t difficult for Woody Harrelson to connect with the pooch-obsessed gangster he plays in “Seven Psychopaths,â€? who goes to great lengths to retrieve a stolen shih tzu named Bonnie. “I have one now that I’m that attached to,â€? Harrelson tells Metro. “She’s half pitbull, and we have yet to determine what the other half is. We don’t know for sure. But she’s a beauty. We call her Snowy, and she’s really a lot of fun. And if I lost her, I can say that I would lose my mind. I can’t imagine what that would be like. It was just hard, like, I left yesterday from Maui, and just saying goodbye to her was ‌ ugh.â€?

You’re not a terribly angry or violent person in real life, but you play those types so well.

It does seem to just come pretty easy. I think you’ll find this is true with most actors: You’re going to find a pocket, a little well of anger in there. I’ve certainly found it to be true. And by the same token, actors are some of the funnest people to hang out with, but there’s al-

It’s hard to resist a plate of mac ’n’ cheese — and now you don’t have to.

“Recipe Rehab,” a new show on ABC, invades a family’s kitchen to prove that decadent foods can be cooked healthier.

“There’s no reason comfort food can’t be healthy,” assures host Danny Boome. “Thirty years ago, you didn’t have halffat cheese or low sodium tomatoes. Now we have nonstick pans, so we don’t need oil or butter.”

On the show, chefs duel it out to rehab a family’s favorite comfort food recipe into a healthier version of the original.

The family gets to judge the two healthier dishes and decide a winner based on overall taste and closeness to the original meal.

“The first thing of healthy cooking is cooking,” says Boome said. “If you’re cooking instead of reheating and defrosting, that’s a great start.”

Boome’s tips Bake, don’t fry. Baking reduces oil and is overall a healthier option.

Choose your meats wisely.

Lean beef is healthier than normal beef. At the grocery store, Boome says look for the “20 percent fat, 80 percent lean meat” option. Even

Cut fat in half. When presented with a reduced fat option, go for it. “It’s just healthier for you,” says Boome.

Use bold cheeses. Reduce the amount of cheese you use in a dish by buying bolder cheeses. Instead of cheddar, use sharp cheddar. This way you can use a smaller amount without sacrificing

taste. Boome also recommends Parmesan cheese for its strong flavor.

Add less salt, more herbs. Instead of adding several doses of salt, experiment with spices and herbs that will add flavor. By using less salt, you reduce your sodium intake.

Kevin McKidd tackles scotch, Leibovitz and Season 9 of ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ “I can’t believe I had to come all the way to New York to get a glass of Macallan,” proclaimed actor Kevin McKidd’s extremely Scottish father Neil on Wednesday night. He was sipping the single malt scotch at a party celebrating a new creative campaign between his son, photographer Annie Leibovitz and Macallan.

It was a good crack by the elder McKidd. He and his wife, Kathleen, raised Kevin in Elgin, — just a few miles from the Macallan distillery, where the actor worked as a teenager. “I was literally the guy who swept up all the crap and did all the crap jobs,” recounted Kevin, who is probably most famous for portraying Dr. Owen Hunt (aka: McRugged) on “Grey’s Anatomy.” “I was the hired hand holding all the rubbish.”

And now he’s being photographed by Leibovitz for The Macallan Masters of Photography campaign, which

is comprised of 1,000 limitededition bottles featuring portraits of McKidd. “It’s extremely surreal,” he professes.

It was apt that we were having this conversation over a glass of scotch, considering I (along with many “Grey’s” fans) have been drinking heavily since the long-running show killed off fan fave Dr. Mark “McSteamy” Sloan (Eric Dane) on the Season 9 premiere.

“People are really sad,” McKidd confessed, with a slight furrow of his hunky brow (not many brows can be described as “hunky,” but his most definitely is). “It’s such a weird thing that he’s gone. We’re like a family. So suddenly for him not to be there. ... There is a hole in the show,” the actor added. “But things have to move on, and what I like about the season is that people are grieving the loss of all these people. But they are grieving properly.”

“Yesterday during the show me and my tour manager Josh had some stuff stolen. Really sucks.

An alleged naked picture of Bieber surfaced online on Thursday just hours after Bieber’s tweet, although many are debunking it as a doctored photo.

“Christina and Owen are so messed up they can’t figure out which way is up,” McKidd said about his onscreen relationship with Dr. Cristina Yang (Sandra Oh). “We are this ‘little engine that could’ type of thing. I’m not even sure the writers knew they would have this type of amazing relationship,” McKidd added.

Fans agree: There are whole blogs and message boards dedicated to the fictional couple. “The way the writers keep putting us through these rings of fire — most couples would never be able to survive,” McKidd said.

“Somehow Christina and Owen keep pushing through it. They are gluttons for punishment.”

A Philly family affair New exhibit at the Woodmere Museum features the paintings of renowned abstract artist Louise Fishman alongside the work of her biggest influences: her mother and aunt How she entered the family business

W

hen Louise Fishman began going through her mother’s homes, she was prepared to discover a lot of art.

At 96, Gertrude Fisher-Fishman stopped working only two-anda-half years ago, and as a child, Fishman remembers her painting every day in their West Oak Lane home. Even so, she was impressed by what she discovered. “I picked up piles of drawings and watercolors and prints and put them in my suitcase and just took them home,” says Fishman. “There was wonderful work filling two apartments, and I thought, these paintings are important — I don’t want to just put them in storage.”

Fishman — an accomplished abstract artist herself who now lives and works in New York City — began looking for a venue to host an exhibit of her mother’s work. She found the perfect match at

Woodmere Art Museum, a converted Chestnut Hill mansion with an interest in the work of Philadelphia natives, and of women in particular.

Opening this weekend, “Generations” has become not just an overdue retrospective of Fisher-Fishman’s work, but a portrait of a family, as well: The exhibit also includes paintings

by Fishman and her aunt, Razel Kapustin, who acted as her mentor during her days at Tyler School of Art. “I remember walking up her stairs at an apartment at Ninth and Pine — her paintings were all stacked out in the hallway, her house was all Persian rugs,” says Fishman. “She had a Siamese cat that scared me; there were books all over and it smelled of paint. It always smelled of paint, and I was, of course, very interested in her.”

Art schooled Louise Fishman has work in museums across the country, as well as two shows currently running in New York.

She didn’t, however, always plan on entering the family business. “I didn’t have any interest in being a painter.

But I think that this happens to people — they’re set up to be a painter, but aren’t aware of it,” she says. “Aside from wanting to be a basketball player, an impossibility in 1956, I signed up for the teacher’s college at Temple, which I really had no interest in. But then I met someone who was going to art school, and I was very interested in him — in what he was carrying, in how he was dressed, in what he was saying.”

The good fight It’s fitting that Mark Havens discovered the Monster Factory while commuting between Philadelphia and Wildwood. A grassroots wrestling school with a flair for the very dramatic, it’s the type of otherworldly place

that perhaps only exists in the no-man’s land between the city and shore, a New Jersey purgatory where diners take on their own mythology and discount liquor stores light the way.

Havens, a photographer and teacher at Philadelphia University, was working on another project at the time, but he instinctively started shooting the school’s practice matches.

“I didn’t know what I was going to do with the pictures,” he admits. “It was about a year that I

had them. It was a pretty disorienting experience — this WWFstyle, Hulk Hogan-type wrestling school. Even in this small-time venue, this grim little warehouse, they were very protective — you didn’t see or photograph anyone out of character.”

tics of the sport, Havens found something strangely familiar in his photographs. “There was something universal about this passion play, the whole primitive folk theater of wrestling. Even though it was a very small venue, they were just so passionate about the good-versus-evil thing,” he says. “It’s the same reason that people watch action movies or go to an Eagles game: to cheer for what they perceive as the good guys and boo the bad guys.” MONICA WEYMOUTH

ustin Antiorio could have hidden behind his apron and given up on the dream.

Just a month ago, he stood in “Hell’s Kitchen” and the knob didn’t turn, as he finished runner-up to Philadelphia’s own chef Christina Wilson.

But Antiorio holds no grudges. Not against Wilson.

Antiorio hails from Lyndhurst, N.J., a suburb of New York City. While he made sure to compliment the creative things happening in the Philly restaurant scene, specifically Stephen Starr, he also hyped up his own metropolis.

“New York City is the food capital of the world,” he said. “Philly is more, the people eat what you give them. New York is make what the people want, so it’s a little different.”

While Antiorio harbors no ill will toward the reality show that launched his semi-celebrity status, he does admit that he doesn’t think his style was appropriate for Ramsay’s Las Vegas steakhouse. “The restaurant that chef wanted Christina to run [Gordon Ramsay Steak at Paris Las Vegas] is a steakhouse — that’s really not what I do,” says Antiorio. “I’m really eclectic in my techniques, really more than steakhouse-style.”

Andy Reid may just need to tell his struggling quarterback two words this weekend: Hurry up! As Mike Vick attempts to improve his decision-making and fix his ball security issues, maybe speeding the game up will help.

The Eagles broke out their version of a hurry-up, or nohuddle, offense on several series last week in Pittsburgh, including their opening possession. While they didn’t score a touchdown, Vick seemed more in control with the up-tempo style. In it, he doesn’t have extra time to over-think anything. It’s get to the line and go.

“I think we look forward to having that up-tempo offense,” LeSean McCoy said Thursday. “Keep movin’, keep the chains movin’, keep the pressure on the defense.”
