shows that Sen. Scott Brown and Democrat Elizabeth Warren are within 2 points with a week to go before Election Day. The Boston Globe poll, which was released yesterday, showed Brown with 45 percent and Warren with 43 percent.

The poll of nearly 600 likely voters has a margin of error of 4.1 percent. It was conducted by the University of New Hampshire Survey Center.

BU suspends fraternity

Nearly all flights coming and going from Logan Airport were canceled yesterday because of the severe weather. Logan remained open, but there were few people at the airport yesterday.

Nearly 900 flights were canceled yesterday, according to FlightStats.com. The airlines had also cancelled some flights for today.

University have suspended a fraternity over allegations of hazing.

The BU chapter of the Sigma Chi fraternity was placed on interim suspension Friday, according to BU Today.

Officials are investigating and said the hazing may have involved “extended isolation” and forced alcohol consumption, according to BU Today.

Members of the fraternity’s international organization are cooperating.

It is the third incident involving allegations of hazing at greek organizations connected with BU in the last eight months.

Many who were able to catch the last trains and buses before the T shut down yesterday returned to homes without electricity.

Hurricane Sandy sauntered out of the region overnight, but not before she left behind some less than ideal mementos of her brief twist with the Boston area.

Thousands of people were left without power, broken tree limbs were scattered about various streets and the MBTA was shuttered well before the evening rush.

As of 2:30 p.m., as the storm’s full force was starting to move into the area, there were more than 52,000 homes and businesses without power, according to NSTAR. Customers without power numbered more than 5,200 in Boston, 1,274 in Cambridge and 1,455 in Somerville.

In addition to Sandy shutting off the power, she also shut down the MBTA. When the T would resume service had yet to be determined as of press time.

Sandy delays Mattapan massacre trial BOSTON. The retrial of

Dwayne Moore, the man accused of gunning down four people including a 2-year-old and his mother, was delayed because of Hurricane Sandy.

Moore’s trial was scheduled to start yesterday, but because of severe weather it is expected to get underway tomorrow.

Moore, who is also accused of shooting a fifth man who survived the 2010 robbery, is about to be tried for the second time. A jury could not decide his first trial.

Because of the media coverage of the shooting and trial a judge ordered that jurors from Worcester County would be chosen and then bussed to Suffolk Superior Court in Boston. METRO

In a ruling issued Sunday, Judge Richard Stearns denied a motion filed last week by Bulger’s attorney. It was the second time the attorney, J.W. Carney Jr., sought to have Stearns remove himself from the trial. “Because at no time during my service as an [assistant U.S. attorney] did I participate in or have any knowledge of any

case or investigation in which defendant was a subject matter or target, I have nothing of a relevant or material nature to offer with regard to this case or any claim of immunity,�

Stearns wrote in his decision.

Carney has argued in motions that Stearns will be called as a witness in Bulger’s attempt to prove that he was given immunity by Jeremiah O’Sullivan, a former U.S. Attorney for Massachusetts. Before he was a judge, Stearns served as an assistant U.S. attorney.

Obama returns to White House to monitor Sandy GETTY IMAGES

President Barack Obama canceled campaign events in Florida and Wisconsin to return to Washington yesterday and monitor the impact and response to Hurricane Sandy, the White House said.

Obama ended plans to speak at a Florida university in Orlando yesterday and flew back to Washington, a White House spokesman said. Another event scheduled for today in Green Bay, Wisconsin, was also canceled.

"The president will return to the White House to monitor the preparations for and early response to Hurricane Sandy," White House spokesman Jay Carney said in a statement.

Obama will remain in Washington today to follow the storm's impact.

Obama arrived in Florida on Sunday night, coming a day early to try to beat the storm.

The president delivered pizzas to a local campaign office in Florida on Sunday night and told volunteers that the burden would increase for them because he would have to curtail his campaign activities in the coming days.

Obama has also canceled events in swing states Virginia and Colorado due to the storm.

Despite the drawback of canceling events roughly a week before Election Day, the storm gives Obama an opportunity to appear presidential during a natural disaster.

News in brief Most East Coast refiners shutting as Sandy nears More than two-thirds of the U.S. East Coast's refining capacity shut yesterday ahead of Hurricane Sandy, sending gasoline futures up as much as 4 percent as operators braced for potentially damaging power outages and flooding.

With Sandy gaining strength, Philadelphia Energy Solutions began the precautionary closure of key units at its Philadelphia refinery, the biggest in the region, a source familiar with operations said.

Oil traders were factoring in a potential squeeze on fuel supplies, sending gasoline prices up almost 12 cents a gallon in early trade before pulling back. Inventories were already at relatively low levels across the region.

While prices rose in response to the refinery closures, some analysts said the storm would also cut heavily into oil demand in the densely populated region, with most people avoiding driving and airlines grounded during the storm. REUTERS

Fourteen rescued from HMS Bounty; two still missing The U.S. Coast Guard yesterday rescued 14 of the 16 crew who abandoned the replica tall ship HMS Bounty while in the path of Hurricane Sandy off North Carolina, using helicopters to lift them from life rafts, the Coast Guard said.

The tall ship was built for the 1962 movie "Mutiny on the Bounty" and lost power while at sea on Sunday night. The original Bounty, a British transport vessel, gained infamy for a mutiny in Tahiti in 1789.

The Coast Guard continued to search for the two missing crew members.

atricia Watkins, a former drug addict and steel worker who went on to earn a PhD, is running for the Illinois State Senate, and she considers herself a product of Barack Obama’s 2008 presidential victory. “It completely changed Chicago politics,” she explains to Metro in her Chicago home. “Before Obama, the candidate that the party machine here selected won every single time. And once they were elected, they were in for life. Obama was very exciting for us, because Hillary Clinton was the party machine’s choice here in Chicago. Nobody expected a Barack Hussein Obama, from the South Side, to win.”

The Obama supporters “Before Obama’s speech at the 2004 Democratic convention, we didn’t know anything about him,” reflects Peggy Forbes, an English teacher in the Chicago suburb of Evanston. “But ever since that speech, I’ve been a very strong Obama supporter.” She and her husband, Jim, will vote for Obama again despite his failure to fix the economy, Obama’s Achilles heel in this election.

“When he took office, he was handed an economic mess,”

she explains. “To expect him to fix it was naïve. And our son has served in Iraq twice, so we very much support Obama’s decision to get the troops out.”

The Forbes had hoped that

Obama would get gun control legislation passed, and they note that Obama was inexperienced when he took office. “But he did bring experienced people with him,” notes Jim. And they have no doubts about casting their votes for Obama again.

“We’re not hurting financially,” explains Peggy. “And our son is home from the war.

Things are not perfect in this country, but I don’t blame Obama for that.”

They have already voted, but will try to get others to vote on election day. “Even though Illinois will go to Obama, we mustn’t be complacent,” Peggy says.

Chicago’s South Side is its poor part, with 80-90% of its residents African-American.

Unemployment and violence are rampant. This is where the Obama family still has their home, albeit in a wealthy enclave. But neither in the South Side, nor anywhere else in Chicago, does one see the ubiquitous yard signs of every American election. “It would be a waste of money,” says one Chicago resident. “Everybody knows that Obama will win.”

ngel Garcia knows that, too. As president of the Chicago Young Republicans, he spends every free moment canvassing and knocking on doors on behalf of

Republican candidates. “Sure it’s difficult, but we understand that we don’t have to win Chicago, which is almost impossible,” he explains. “We can make a dent. And Obama took the best Chicago Democrats with him to Washington. That’s an opportunity for us.” Obama has a 16 percentage-point lead over Mitt Romney in Illinois, and an even wider margin in Chicago. 1988 was the last time a Republican presidential candidate won Illinois.

“Chicago is a very workingclass Democratic city,” says Anne Nicklin, a young Chicago architect. “People are very supportive of Obama, but he doesn’t factor into local politics. The only thing is when he comes

Once upon a time, fronting Black Flag and then the Rollins Band, he not so much sang up a storm as he yelled one into being. And then it was a difficult thing to understand, so I just wanted to learn more — what was going on with my body and how I could fix it and how I could reverse everything that was going on. I wanted the doctors to tell me everything.

Have you had to change your lifestyle since the diagnosis?

Mostly everything that has

We already checked on that.

What kind of support has your wife given you throughout this?

Who’s persecuting whom?

RE: “WANT TO KEEP YOUR FAITH? BETTER PUT IT IN ROMNEY” (METRO, OCT. 26-28) The

ignorance of the populace is amazing! Letter writer Joann Flanagan says, “Vote for Obama if you’re for religious persecution.” There has been no facts stating that Obama will prosecute anyone practising religion or any part of the church at all. Where have you been these past four years when Obama did any of that, and what makes you think he would do it now. If you’re referring to the fact that he doesn’t cross church and state then you’re just stating a plus of the president.

our president does not force you to follow his religion and punish you if you do not.

Ms. Flanagan claims that Obama wants to “start a religious persecution.” This is a blatantly false and uninformed statement. The only people who want religious persecution are religious people. Since she claims persecution, she’s probably for prayer in school. I doubt she would be happy with Jewish, Islamic, Buddist, or pagan prayer in school. Our Consti-

tution — which is also hers — prohibits putting one religion over another. We can’t have school or teacher-led prayer in public schools because it would be impossible to satisfy every religion.

The religious persecution came in the form of kings and parliament forcing people to live under their version of Christianity and oppressing you if you did not conform. Celtics open 2012-13 season in same place 2011-12 ended Stacked bench will be put to use immediately We’re saying it for the sixth straight year now – the Boston Celtics are legitimate title contenders.

It’s Year 6 of what many thought was a three-year window, but we still hold these lofty expectations.

In five seasons, the Celtics have won an NBA Finals series, gone to another, made a trip to the Eastern Conference Finals, and two others to the semifinals. Not too shabby.

But make no mistake: another Eastern Conference Finals loss just isn’t going to cut it. Celtics GM Danny Ainge has magnificently assembled a team that could very well be the deepest in the league.

While Celtics coach Doc Rivers is certainly glad to have the depth, he cautions about getting too high about it.

"It’s still a five-on-five game," Rivers said. "I was laughing, if we could play 10-on-10, we would beat everybody. But you can’t do that, it's five at a time on the floor."

Fair point, but having capable bodies to step in due to injury or foul trouble is a huge plus. Last season, Boston’s bench averaged an NBA-low 15.2 minutes per game and ranked second-to-last in scoring at 21.6 points, last in rebounds (11.5), and last in assists (3.6). To put that in perspective, Western Conference contenders Denver, San Antonio and Dallas averaged nearly double that in points in roughly five more minutes of playing time.

This is the most complete team since the 1980s era Big Three, and the C’s know they’re in a position to win it all.
