Councilman Kenyatta Johnson appeared yesterday at a City Council committee hearing to defend himself against claims that legislation he introduced on Mayor Michael Nutter’s behalf is a Philadelphia Redevelopment Authority land grab aimed at stifling new development in Point Breeze.

“As always, I’m here for everyone that wants to sit down and have a civil conversation,” Johnson said. “And I’ll say that again — a civil, straightup, nondisrespectful-online-slycomments-about-the-peoplethat-live-in-Point-Breeze conversation, but truly about affordable housing in the Point Breeze community in general so we provide a neighborhood for everyone that lives there.”

Johnson has been the subject of negative online rumors surrounding the bill’s intent, as well as a Change.org petition with 900 signatures. The controversy first touched off in late September, when Johnson, on Nutter’s behalf, introduced the amendment allowing the PRA to seize 48 parcels of land for use as affordable housing.

Man charged in DUI after fatal crash A Mayfair man has been charged with DUI and vehicular homicide following a fatal car crash in Northeast Philadelphia.

Bigwigs to sleep on street for cash to give to charity Some local business executives will be trading the comfort of their luxury condominiums and sprawling homes for a night outside on the street Thursday to help raise funds for a private child welfare agency.

The Covenant House Executive Sleep Out puts executives outside with a sleeping bag and cardboard box to show them what it’s like for youth to be homeless.

The event raises funds for Covenant House, which serves homeless youth across the country. It started last year in New York City, and 12 shelters will participate this year, including Covenant House Pennsylvania.

“I expect it to be probably a little bit eye-opening,” said Terry Delancey, a former executive with Sunoco, who will take part. “I realize it’s only for one night, I realize we don’t have anywhere near the uncertainty these kids face on a frequent basis, but even in probably doing it for one night we’ll learn about the struggles and fears they have.”

The executives will be sleeping outside of the shelter’s Armat Street office in German-

“I’ve just been watching the weather a little more closely and looking for all my layer gear. I’m really going to try and take it as it comes and experience it,” he said.

Liberal campaigners celebrated victory with the legalization of recreational marijuana in Colorado and Washington state.

But existing traders, legal and illegal, worry the new system could force them out.

“It could be better to keep it medicinal use only,” Michele Ballinger, manager of the Herbs Medicinal dispensary in Berthoud, Colo., told Metro.

“The community have tolerated us here, but there is still a lot of suspicion, and if it becomes big business, that will put under pressure.”

Herbs Medicinal is the only dispensary in town and has slowly won acceptance, although some residents have moved houses in protest, Ballinger says. Residents will vote later this month on banning dispensaries from selling the drug openly. “If that passes, we will have to leave,” says Ballinger.

A 2-YEAR-OLD HIDING BEHIND THE UNIFORM AND THE MEDALS All leader hierarchies are a honey pot for narcissism — excessive vanity and self-centeredness. This is equally true in the military as it is in the corporate or political world. Why would a successful and popular military leader risk everything? Not because he needed the sex. The world is asking how could he be that stupid? Narcissists are not motivated the same way as balanced ordinary people.

W

hat makes pathological narcissistic leaders difficult to understand is that we can’t see they are in the middle of a life and death struggle to maintain a false self-image.

How does that false self-image develop? One important source of pathological narcissism can be found along the road to maturity. At a certain stage, children discover their own will power by challenging their parents. If good parenting does not help the child to balance its will, they grow up with a secret sense of entitlement. When this child becomes an adult that sense of entitlement can survive as a very childish part of the personality — a self-image built on the false belief they really are that important.

And where does the bad judgement come from? After all, narcissists all seem to be intelligent and mature — at least on the surface.

Someone appointed as head of the CIA would have to present pretty well to those making the decision. The problem is that people appointing leaders aren’t able to see the whole picture, they don’t know there is a 2-year-old hiding behind the impressive uniform and the medals.

So how could such a seemingly powerful person be foolish enough to squander everything for the short lived pleasure of an extramarital affair? Well, not because it was cool or exciting, but because he desperately needs it. If a narcissist is unable to get their narcissistic fuel, which is the attention and adulation of others, they end up depressed, feeling worthless and lonely, thus making their actions into a life-and-death struggle to maintain a flawed identity. What makes narcissistic leaders dangerous is that they are not motivated by work and love. They will do anything to keep their self-image intact, to feed their sense of entitlement.

Why are women treated differently than generals?

With a documented epidemic of one in three servicewomen being sexually assaulted by their comrades in the military, the news of an affair between General David Petraeus and Paula Broadwell seems insignificant by comparison.

The amount of resources being used to uncover this relationship between two consenting adults raises the question: Why do we spend more time reporting on extramarital affairs, while neglecting a problem as atrocious as rape within the military?

The coverage of this story is not only blown out of proportion, it replays tired sexist attitudes towards women.

Since Adam and Eve, women have been scorned and blamed for tempting men and causing their downfall.

We’ve all read about Broadwell’s “revealing arm pits,” tight shirts and toned arms that were often left uncovered.

A stereotype about seductresses is never complete with-

out tales of how she “got her claws in him,” as the Business Insider reported, quoting a source.

Meanwhile, General Petraeus is being applauded for admitting the affair and “doing the right thing” by resigning, while the CIA is without a leader and vulnerable as a result of his poor choices.

Let’s stop pitting every woman who is caught having an affair with a powerful man as the evil temptress who brings him down.

The real scandal is that with each passing day spent digging for more titillating facts about General Petraeus’ sex life, more women in the military will be raped.

The public shaming belongs to the media — not to Broadwell — for doing a disservice to the public by confusing the real issues of our time.

Man executed for stabbing death An Ohio man who stabbed a woman 138 times and cut off her hands was put to death yesterday in the state’s third execution since the lifting of a six-month moratorium imposed by a judge last year.

Brett Xavier Hartman, 38, was convicted of the murder of Winda Snipes in Akron, Ohio, 15 years ago.

Hartman was convicted in April 1998 of tying Snipes to her bed and stabbing her 138 times, slitting her throat and cutting off her hands.

They were never found.

While the “stop snitching” T-shirts — so prevalent here in 2005 — have largely disappeared, the fashion of keeping quiet remains. Police and prosecutors cite silent witnesses, even those who are themselves the victims of crime, as a major problem in the city.

“Obviously, it makes it tough,” Philadelphia Police Homicide Capt. James Clark said. “But there are always people who are going to come around and tell us and we have to keep digging until we find those people. … Sooner or later, you’ll get the right one to do the right thing.”

Except sometimes you don’t. Or when you do, that person pays the ultimate price.

Family of murder victim seeks legacy for lost son On the night of Feb. 7, 2011, Shawn Anderson could hear gunshots from inside his home.

But it wasn’t until a neighbor came knocking on his door that he found out who had been hit.

Rashawn “Shawnee” Anderson, 18, was walking from the gas station at the bottom of the hill. He was headed back to his East Falls house in Abbotsford Homes when a car approached and unloaded, striking Rashawn nine times in the head and chest.

Therefore, reaching consensus with regards to our knowledge of the “stop snitching” phenomenon should be a relatively easy task. But it is not. There is a history against snitching — a culture of silence — that results in the decline, decay and ultimate death and destruction of our communities. It even leads to misperceptions around terminology of informing and snitching and in the end a better way of understanding the snitching phenomenon and facilitating community discussions that have the potential to lead to better policing and the reduction of witness intimidation. Epilogue Since the beginning of 2007 through the end of 2011, there were 647 murders in Philadelphia that remain unsolved. During the past three days, Metro took a closer look at those cases and the reasons why so many murders lack closure.

Issues facing us include the urban taboo of snitching and witness intimidation, as outlined in today’s pages. But, as we’ve learned the previous two days, police officials have lessened the case loads for homicide detectives and many community leaders continue to push peace in the city’s

The takeaway? We are not near a day when every murder will be solved expeditiously, but innovations and better cooperation between police and residents are expected to — over time — reduce the size of lists like this.

As we opened this threeday series on Monday with a cover that listed in small print every victim over the five years profiled, we close out the series with a better view of those who this series was truly about.

In honor of World Diabetes Today (today!), the co-host of ESPN’s ‘Mike & Mike in the Morning’ gives us a play-by-play rundown of his schedule How he keeps his disease under control The routine 4:15 a.m.: Wake up and check my blood sugar. Usually it’s a little low in the morning. I do this so I can plan ahead to help keep my blood sugar regulated, so that I feel good and have energy throughout the day. Through my partnership with Merck and the American College of Endocrinology on a program called The Game Plan I have learned tips for helping manage my diabetes through the program’s four “goals,” such as setting goals with my doctor, planning

meals ahead of time and integrating exercise into my day.

4:40 a.m.: I head to ESPN studios to host my morning radio show. I listen to the radio on the way in and arrive at 5 a.m.

5 a.m.: I normally have fruit and oatmeal as I catch up on the sports news and scores from the previous night. It’s important that I eat right in the morning because it sets the tone for my whole day and helps me manage my blood sugar, blood pressure and cholesterol.

Explorers itching to finally return to the Big Dance La Salle opens with win, looks to build off NIT trip Galloway, Duren fuel backcourt Who else shines?

La Salle lost in the first round of last season’s NIT to an upstart Minnesota program. But the Explorers were winners just by making it that far.

It was the first time that La Salle reached the postseason since 1991-92, when it was eliminated in the opening round of the NCAA tournament.

La Salle wound up 21-13 last season. It was only the fourth winning record in the past 20 years at 20th and Olney. With much of the core group returning, there are many reasons to be optimistic.

“The strength of our team is that we have a group of guards as good as any team in the country,” La Salle coach John Giannini said. “You could argue that there are kids better here or there, but nobody has a better group.”

The backcourt is expected to be very strong with Ramon Galloway, Tyreek Duren and Sam Mills. Don’t forget about Ty Garland, who transferred from Virginia Tech and will be eligible after the fall semester.

G Ty Garland, 6-foot-1 Our take: Garland is third in Philadelphia Public League history with 2,198 career points. He can clearly score, but can he fit in right away?

Unfinished business for Drexel Drexel won 29 games — and 19 in a row — last season, but still couldn’t sneak past the NCAA tournament selection committee.

There will be no controversy if the Dragons can win the CAA tournament this time around. Drexel is expected to contend for the league championship with such a talented team returning. The only real loss is forward Samme Givens.

“We were picked to finish first last year, too, so we are used to the high expectations,” Drexel coach Bruiser Flint said. “This year we’d like to finish it off by winning the CAA tournament.”

The Dragons are set up to win a lot of games, especially with the backcourt of Frantz Massenat, Damion Lee and sharpshooter Chris Fouch.

Forwards Daryl McCoy and Dartaye Ruffin are two of the more underrated players in the city. They do all the little things every team needs.

The schedule is much tougher than it was a year ago. There are difficult games looming against Illinois State, Saint Mary’s and Saint Joseph’s. The CAA is much improved and nothing will come easy.

Drexel’s newcomers, such as Tavon Allen, Kazembe Abif and Casey Carroll, could play a big role, especially when the schedule becomes tougher and the team needs to rely on its depth. ANDY JASNER

G Chris Fouch, 6-2 Our take: Despite lingering injuries, Fouch still averaged 10.5 points. With his longrange shooting ability, expect those numbers to rise.

Drexel opened its season last week with a 66-62 loss at Kent State. They take on Illinois State tomorrow (7 p.m.) at Daskalakis Athletic Center.

The team that plays at the Linc is in the midst of a losing streak. The left-handed starting quarterback has been plagued by turnovers and inconsistency and the offense has had trouble scoring all season, yet the coach insists they’re heading in the right direction.

Sound familiar? Only this isn’t about Andy Reid and Mike Vick. This is Temple.

On Saturday, the Owls will attempt to snap a four-game skid at Army. They have been outscored, 161-54, with southpaw Chris Coyer accounting for six turnovers and completing less than 50 percent of his passes during that stretch.

Yet Steve Addazio admitted he always sees the glass half full, even if no one else does. “We’ve played some pretty darn good football teams that are the cream of our league,� said Addazio, who learned Monday that a proposed 12th game at Hawaii was off the table. “We’ve played good at

Scootie Randall scored a career-high 31 points after sitting out last season with a medical red-shirt. Anthony Lee chipped in with 16 points, with Khalif Wyatt adding nine. The Owls shot 53 percent (27 of 51) from the field.

Last month, she released her debut book, “The Handbuilt Home,” with instructions and tips for 34 (mostly new) stylish and budget-friendly woodworking projects.

For those afraid to pick up a drill, White uses her own experience as motivation. “I didn’t use a drill or saw until I was in my mid-20s. It’s not that you can’t, it’s just that you haven’t been taught,” says White, who built her first piece of furniture because she and her husband couldn’t afford high-quality design and didn’t want to compromise on cheaper particle board options. “A drill to me is as easy as a hand mixer — it rotates with an attachment. So I

Still not convinced? White recommends starting small.

“Have your hardware store cut your boards so you’re not deal-

ing with a saw. Take them home, use a drill — but pretend it’s a hand mixer — and make your first piece of furniture.

You’ll build up some confidence and go from there.”

Save thousands of dollars: “Everybody wants to save some money, right? When you build furniture, you save upward of 90 percent off retail. That’s why I started building my own. I said, ‘I’m a mom. We have a tight budget, where can I be the most effective?’ I found that furniture was where I could create the biggest return for my time.”

You’re the boss: “When you DIY, you say what goes in your home. You can say, ‘I want this color. I want it to fit this space. I have a small apartment, I want a floor-toceiling bookshelf that fits per-

fectly.’ If you’re buying something you’re stuck dealing with what is ‘in season’ or ‘in style.’”

It’s green: “You can make your project greener. You can say, ‘I want a really high indoor air quality in my home, so I’m going to choose formaldehyde-free materials. I’m going to use low VOC paint and make our home healthier as well.’ You can also say, ‘ I don’t want to contribute to landfills.’ When I make my own furniture, there’s no packaging involved. I just go to Home Depot and get some raw boards and build something. I don’t have to figure out a way to dispose of this packaging or think about the furniture being shipped overseas and then shipped back to manufacturing plants and distribution centers.”

Aren’t supplies expensive?

“Most furniture that you buy is particle board. If you’re to compare apples to apples, you can buy a 4-foot by 8-foot sheet of particle board big enough to make a bookshelf for $17 at any hardware store. If you want to go up a grade, make it out of plywood, which high-quality cabinets are made out of. You could buy a sheet of it for $50.”
