Taxi driver in coma after brutal beating Brooklyn assemblymembers will introduce bill that makes it a felony to assault taxi drivers Alleged assailant is free on $10,000 bail Fight started during an argument over the fare AMANDA WOODS/METRO

New York City taxi drivers and assemblymembers are demanding justice after a taxi passenger brutally assaulted a driver, Key Chun Kim, in the early morning of New Year’s Day during an argument over the fare. Kim, 53, is in a coma. But his alleged assailant, Andrew McElroy, 28, is free on $10,000 bail. Kim’s family, his fellow taxi drivers and three local assemblymembers — Ron Kim, Ed Braunstein and Walter Mosley — gathered for a prayer vigil in front of Kings County Hospital Center in Brooklyn, where Kim was receiving treatment, on Thursday afternoon. They demanded stronger prosecution for McElroy as well as anyone who assaults a taxi driver. When the driver’s sister, Kristin Kim, heard McElroy was set free on bail and not charged with a felony, she was shocked. “It was nonsense to me for anybody to beat anybody into a coma,” Kim said. “I thought the case was not treated fairly, and without feeling.” Kim, Braunstein and Mosley spoke about the Taxi Driver Protection Act, which would require assaults against drivers to be prosecuted as felonies and for signs to be posted in all taxis warning against such violence. Kim said legislation about the in-taxi signs will be introduced next week,

He spoke out about the need for the Taxi Driver Protection Act. “Many of us choose to drive taxis,” he said. “Why can’t I do my job? At least we deserve some protection.”

The Assault on Transit Workers Initiative, in place since 2008, covers bus and subway operator assaults. But there are no such penal laws designated for assaults on taxi drivers, he said. Assaults against taxi drivers are treated like assaults against any civilian, without any special regulations, he said. Although McElroy was charged with misdemeanors and felonies, according to Bhairavi Desai, executive director of the New York Taxi Workers Alliance, he can only be prosecuted with a felony through a grand jury indictment. But no such grand jury indictment has or is scheduled to occur.

Queens pol wants erotic dancer disclosure A bill from Astoria Assemblywoman Aravella Simotas aims to expand the information requested on liquor license applications after a bar in her district failed to disclose that

it employed erotic dancers. The applications currently list “topless entertainment” as a category, but bars circumvent that by having the dancers keep their bras and G-strings on. The local community board recommended the bar’s license renewal because they were not informed it was a “go-go bar,” according to the Daily News. METRO

THE MAN OF OUR DREAMS Advice

TOM FOREMAN

POLITICAL CORRESPONDENT FOR CNN

letters@metro.us

I have to confess that I, too, have had an imaginary girlfriend. To be honest, I think they all were up until I met my wife. So while I can’t pretend to know what was really going on with Notre Dame’s star linebacker Manti Te’o, as Chris Rock would say, “I understand.”

W

e live in a complicated world in which many people are not what they appear. Lance Armstrong has pedaled off of his pedestal. David Petraeus ended up with a biographer who wrote not only between the lines but also between the sheets. I don’t follow pop culture closely, but I’m led to believe even that adorable little Lindsay Lohan has had difficulties. Which brings me to Inauguration Day. Here in D.C., where giving false impressions is an art, President Barack Obama is heading into his second term amid all the expected hoopla. Over the next few days, he will be paraded, serenaded, lauded and applauded. He will deliver a soaring speech, shake hands and assure supporters they were right to reelect him. Then he will probably let many of them down. It’s not entirely his fault. It happens to every president, and all of us are to

blame. Because campaigns are not merely about what a candidate says, they are also about what we hear. Supporters, like lonely souls on Internet dating services, project their wishes onto the candidate. They convince themselves that their views and his are much more closely aligned than the evidence would warrant. In Quoted his first presiden“Here in D.C. ... tial race, for example, Obama giving false was repeatedly impressions is portrayed as a radan art.” ical liberal — then many leftleaning voters seemed astonished when he proved too accommodating to Republicans and big business, and not nearly idealistic enough for their tastes. So the inauguration, even for a second term, is where those dueling realities collide. It’s where the imaginary candidate and the real president meet as if on a blind date, and we all get to see what they have in common — and decide whether the relationship we’ve bet on is one we can live with.

Savages’ punctuated attack on every song is every bit as vicious and thrilling as their name implies. The sound of this London band is what is traditionally called postpunk (sounding like a cross between Joy Division and early U2) but the energy is 100 percent punk rock. They’ve officially released a single and a live EP, but expect a full-length soon.

AHEAD OF THE GAME Actor and producer Mark Wahlberg offers his recipe for making a hit ‘Broken City’ adds another shadowy do-gooder to his résumé

eed a movie made on a shoestring? Mark Wahlberg might be your

man. The former bad boy rapper turned Oscar-nominated actor and now film and TV producer shared his recipe for making films: “You’ve gotta come in with that television mentality. You’ve got a lot less money and a lot less time, but you’ve got a great piece of material,” he says. The next ingredient is attracting top talent — like Russell Crowe, Wahlberg’s co-star in his latest film, “Broken City” — by serving them juicy roles and offering them a share of the profits. In the crime thriller genre — where Wahlberg has carved his niche — at a time when Hollywood studios are reticent to take risks, it’s the only way to stay ahead of the curve, he says. In fact, he’s baffled by massive movie budgets. “I was just in New Mexico shooting this movie in 38 days, and before us ‘The

Work ethic Wahlberg’s working-class roots are no secret. As the youngest of nine children, he’s built a multimillion dollar empire out of virtually nothing — and a near-irrational fear of losing everything keeps him going. “I always feel like there’s a good chance I’ll end up back there,” he

Lone Ranger’ was there,” he recalls. “It’s about two guys on horses and it cost $250 million to make. What the f— were these horses doing? Do they fly? I don’t know. It’s crazy.” By contrast, “Broken City,” in theaters Friday, cost around $55 million to make. In it, Wahlberg plays an ex-NYPD officer haunted by his past deadly vigilantism. Now as a private detective, he’s been hired by New York’s mayor (Crowe) to track the infidelities of the politician’s wife (Catherine ZetaJones). The murky lawman is

says. “I keep that as a possibility and that keeps me focused and working hard. I don’t want to let my guard down or feel too comfortable and start being complacent — then you start feeling entitled and everything else. I’m ready to go dig a ditch if I have to, whatever I have to do to provide for my family.”

a role Wahlberg has come to love. “I can certainly appreciate and relate to these guys. The bad guy who is trying to do something good is usually the one I root for,” he says. And out of all those shadowy do-gooders, which is his favorite? He grins. “Dignam. ‘The Departed' was the most fun, because I’m from that world. I’ve spent a lot of time with those cops and I just got to f—ing steamroll everybody.” Liz Brown

are adopted by their uncle (“Game of Thrones” star Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) and his girlfriend (Jessica Chastain) but the question remains: Who is the mysterious Mama they keep talking about? This film has some nice, subtle creepy reveals, a vivid dream sequence and, of course, the ethereal Mama, who occasionally resembles a giant hairball on the floor, but is eerie nonetheless. It’s spooky rather than scary, but has appropriately

creepy kids — the little one even scurries around the floor on all fours like a tiny silverback gorilla — and enough jolts to earn a recommendation. RICHARD CROUSE

Schwarzenegger has led a big-screen blockbuster, but in “The Last Stand,” the sexagenarian is proving he’s still got some fight in him. The threadbare story of a small-town sheriff determined to prevent a drug lord from escaping into Mexico certainly doesn’t break any new ground in the action department, but for fans of the genre it’s a welcome and winking return from the former Governator. Dancing on air, in water, and on film In two premieres, Parsons Dance explores mourning and the Everglades

SWAMP THINGS

WEEKEND, JANUARY 18-20, 2013

O

ld favorites and two new works pack David Parsons’ dance program at the Joyce. The show opens with Parsons’ pretty, lilting “Wolfgang” (2005), choreographed to Mozart; it’s Paul Taylor Lite, an homage to the company where Parsons began his career. Next, we get “Caught,” a great 1982 piece that uses strobe lighting to capture a dancer — here the hunky Steven Vaughn — in midair. At the end comes “In the End,” a 2005 party performed to recordings by the Dave Matthews Band. Former company member Katarzyna Skarpetowska premieres “Black Flowers,” a mysterious mourning dance to music by Chopin. Three women in black dresses suffer, haunted by three luminous young men. Are they dead husbands or sons? Perhaps they are soldiers lost in battle? A Parsons premiere, commissioned by the Wolf Trap Foundation as part of its Faces of America series and excerpted for the Joyce season, is “Dawn to

Dusk,” an evocation of Southern Florida. Setting dancers against full-stage video projections of wildlife and the built environment, it creates a situation where you ogle the screen and barely notice the actual humans boogying on the floor. The piece has the dancers immerse themselves in the sunny Everglades wetlands, alongside alligators and an array of gorgeous birds. In front of the screen on the Joyce stage, the same people reproduce many of the same movements — but because Howell Binkley’s lighting favors the video, a lot of their work is in vain. Final score: birds 10, dancers 3. Elizabeth Zimmer

We’ve frequently wondered why Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson got back together. Even before her little fling with Rupert Sanders fueled an entire summer’s worth of gossip columns (thanks again, girl!), these two never looked all that happy. But now, we understand: Together, they’ve helped the “Twilight” franchise rake in $635 million at the domestic box office, which is only a fraction of the films’ $3.3 billion worldwide haul. This makes them the highestgrossing romantic celebrity co-stars, according to a new list from Forbes. Being involved in real life wasn’t a requirement for the list, but it seemed to help. Stewart handily beat No. 2 — “The Vow” costars Rachel McAdams and Channing Tatum — by a cool $510 million. Not even the iconic Carrie and Mr. Big could compete: Sarah Jessica Parker and Chris Noth raked in a mere $95 million for their “Sex and the City” movies. Is it their unique chemistry, or is it the fact that “Twilight” fans will stare at anything that sparkles for two hours? Doesn’t matter — for $635 million, we’d throw love to the werewolves, too.

Globe-nominated role in “The Paperboy” thanks to an infamous scene in which she urinates on Zach Efron. But Kidman doesn’t get what the big deal is. “I just don’t find urination shocking. I think I peed in the beginning of ‘Eyes Wide Shut,’ too. But then, I don’t find a lot of things shocking. Violence is a lot more shocking than sex — sex is primal,” she tells the Hollywood Reporter. “I felt shy singing in ‘Moulin Rouge,’ but peeing — no, not shy.”

Let’s just be really weird friends The New York Post reported that Russell Crowe and Dita Von Teese enjoyed “a romantic couple’s massage” at the Four Seasons hotel in New York last month and have been getting flirty. Now, Crowe has taken to Twitter to deny the story. “Dita Von Teese is brave, smart, sweet and elegant. She is a friend of mine. Who wouldn’t want friends like that? Friends, not lovers,” Crowe tweeted. Be honest: There’s no way you thought a story about Russell Crowe, Dita Von Teese and Twitter was going to end that classy.

NYC Restaurant Week menus we’re dying to try We’re of the opinion that Restaurant Week is best time of year to be a New Yorker When else can you get a reservation at Boulud Sud or pay just under $40 for three courses at Le Cirque? Our favorites for your taste buds and your wallet

La Villette

10 Downing St., 212-255-0300 At the cozy new French bistro in the former 10 Downing space, start with the tomato tarte — flaky layers of puff pastry generously topped with emmental cheese and juicy fresh tomatoes. If you’re daring, or just want to eat as the French do, opt for the braised mustard rabbit as your main. More traditional? The Cajunrubbed organic chicken breast is another flavorful option. Creme brulee and chocolate mousse round out the menu. Come back after Restaurant Week and order the loup de mer (European sea bass), which chef Christophe Bonnegrace filets for you tableside.

Telepan

72 W. 69th St., 212-580-4300 Bill Telepan is offering a three-course savory menu at the standard Restaurant Week rate, or a four-course menu with dessert for $48. On the savory side, you'll find vegetarian borscht, lobster Bolognese and heritage pork, among other dishes; for dessert, the goodies include sticky toffee cake, quince granita parfait and dark chocolate bread

Try hazelnut torrone or citrus panna cotta for dessert at Isola. MORGANS HOTEL GROUP

Choose from the yellowtail taco or blistered shishito peppers to start, and then opt for sushi or fried chicken as you’re appetizer — we’re just getting

9 Crosby St., 212-389-0000 Though raw fish is the specialty at Isola, pop by during Restaurant Week to get a taste of what else chef Victor LaPlaca is capable of. Warm up with cauliflower soup or a mushroom flatbread for starters, and try the red wine-braised short rib cavatelli for a hearty main. If you’re craving fish, LaPlaca’s take on cioppino incorporates kale, white beans and crostini.

If you go Winter Restaurant Week is underway now through Feb. 8, with lunches for $25 and dinners for $38. For participating restaurants, visit www.nycgo.com/ restaurantweek. started here. Tuck into shrimp and grits, sliders, seafood or a veggie rice bowl for your main, and save room for pecan pie or purple sweet potato pie (with marshmallow!) for dessert.

Healthy habits to adopt this year COURTESY OF COOKING LIGHT

It’s easy to take for granted the root of a New Year’s resolution — to be resolute. According to Janet Helm, registered dietician and author of “Cooking Light: The Food Lover’s Healthy Habits Cookbook,” getting healthy — and staying healthy all year — is about starting small. “Your goal should be attainable. If you have success, that fuels greater success and then you can celebrate the little victories.”

Firing up the stove — say, three times a week — is the foundation of healthy eating. Eating out generally means you’ll consume at least 50 percent more calories, and cooking is truly the only way to control what you eat.

Eat a healthy breakfast

2

“When you start your day on the right foot, it leads to better habits throughout the day,” Helm says. Eating breakfast helps curb temptations for the rest of the day. Helm’s recipes point toward a breakfast with whole grains, fruits or vegetables (or both), lean protein and low-fat dairy.

Be a mindful eater

3

Mindful eating isn’t about saying “namaste” every time you chow down — it’s about recognizing when you’re hungry and when you’re full, Helm says. Diets that demonize certain foods make it hard to enjoy them at all, so Helm

Janet Helm’s book has recipes to help you year-round.

suggests eating all kinds of foods and focusing on controlling portions instead

Follow the lead of Japan and Iceland — where the average life expectancy is 81 years — and incorporate more fish into your diet. Fish is lean protein that’s high in omega-3 fatty acids, which protect against heart disease, stroke and high blood pressure. Eating fish two times a week is a reasonable and attainable goal.

MORE GAMES. MORE WINNING.

Advice Refresh yourself with a trip to the dermatologist When you look in the mirror and don’t like what you see, the first piece of practical advice NYC-based dermatologist Dr. Ariel Ostad has is, “Don’t be too hard on yourself.” His second piece of advice? “Don’t be ashamed if you want to look better.” We live, he says, in a competitive environment, and there are plenty of nonsurgical procedures that can help you look better and feel refreshed. We talked to him about two hot new ones.

Over 5,000 Slots and Table Games.

Ultherapy: “This exciting new procedure is a skin lifting [and] tightening procedure that uses ultrasound to penetrate deep into the skin to cause contractions,” he says. Dr. Ostad says Ultherapy is “remarkable”

Dr. Ostad says there’s nothing wrong with wanting to change how you look. GOODSHOOT

Tip Dermatology versus plastic surgery: “These are nonsurgical procedures that have little to no risks,” Dr. Ostad says. “Plastic surgery can require a lot more downtime and can change the way you look. These treatments are just modest improvements that won’t change your facial structure.”

because it helps the doctor see layers of skin and penetrate deep enough to make a change. “In the past, we haven’t been able to penetrate the SMAS [SubMuscular Aponeurotic System] layer of tissue, which is the layer right above the muscle used by surgeons to pull back the skin.” Ultherapy can be used almost anywhere: Dermatologists can tighten the neck and lift jowls to create a much smoother, defined jaw line. They can also raise eyebrows and improve hooding on the eyelids. “I’ve used it for patients post-pregnancy for the sagging skin, stretch marks and loose skin from multiple pregnancies. It’s remarkable.” Fillers: Fillers, notes Dr. Ostad, are nothing new. But now there are much better options available for the consumer. “The issue with past fillers is that they didn’t work with really fine lines around the upper lips and crow’s feet. We now have fillers that can target those lines without lumpiness or bumps.” DOROTHY ROBINSON

Amendment to the Constitution, I think the freedom to own and bear arms had the premise that those weapons would be used in a rational and responsible manner, one that did not jeopardize the safety and security of fellow, law-abiding citizens. In light of our increasing rate of addictions to alcohol, drugs, pain killers and other prescription medicines, not to mention the myriad of other social debilitations which contribute to irrationality and irresponsibility, the public is justified in doubting the sanctity of the earlier premise. A high-powered assault weapon with an extended magazine in the hands of a dysfunctional person is a devastatingly destructive combination. We can no longer be dogmatic about the Second Amendment the way literal evangelicals are dogmatic about the creation, ignoring opposing data and evidence.

Letters Eat rabbit food, not rabbit stew RE: “SO YOU WANT TO GO VEGAN IN 2013?” (METRO, JAN. 16) As a physician, I

was delighted to see attention finally being paid to the health benefits of a vegan/vegetarian diet. Never has it been easier to explore non-meat options and alternatives, and even die-hard meat eaters are enjoying readily available products such as Garden and Morningstar Farms. I have long urged my patients to consider decreasing or eliminating the amount of meat they eat — not just to benefit their own health, but also to help impact the negative effects of a meatbased diet on wildlife, the environment and world hunger. Last but certainly not least is the amount of animal suffering that can be reduced by enjoying just a few vegetarian/vegan meals a week. There are certainly many reasons to “go vegan,” and there has never been a better time. PATRICE GREEN, MD,

With the money NRA makes from the sale of firearms, and the contributions they receive from organizations and people supporting their cause, it would only be fair that the NRA be solely responsible for compensating the victims of gun violence, instead of the taxpayers — in particular, since many of us are in favor of gun control. Shumpert return goes according to plan for Knicks

Playoffs in brief

Iman Shumpert’s return to the Knicks’ starting lineup wasn’t exactly earth-shattering, but it was a success. Shumpert played — and started — for the first time since tearing the ACL in his left knee in Game 1 of last year’s playoff series against the Heat. He scored eight points on 3-of-7 shooting in 15 minutes. “I thought he answered the bell loud and clear,” head coach Mike Woodson said of Shumpert. The game was a ho-hum affair from the first quarter. The Knicks ran out to a 29-17 lead on the Pistons after one and were never threatened. The final score was 102-87, as New York improved to 25-13. Shumpert was part of the initial burst against the Pistons, nailing a 3-pointer to make the score 16-2 in favor of New York. Carmelo Anthony got a chance to return to the arena in which he won a gold medal this summer, with 26 points to lead all scorers. His fellow Olympic teammate Tyson Chandler had 10 points and 14 rebounds. Shumpert will have

WEEKEND, JANUARY 18-20, 2013

The general belief, at least in the tri-state area, is that the Patriots’ main rival are the Jets. But with this Sunday’s game (6:30 p.m., CBS) marking the third playoff meeting in four seasons, the Ravens and Patriots are developing an intense rivalry of their own. “We’re two emotional teams, so stuff happens out there,” Patriots lineman Logan Mankins told reporters Thursday. “You just always have to be smart about it. ... You just have to make sure you never take it too far.” The impending retirement of Ravens linebacker Ray Lewis ratchets up the intensity even more. Lewis was emotional on the field following last Sunday’s narrow win over Denver. “I looked at my teammates after the Denver

game, and me and Ray [Rice] just sat there,” Lewis told reporters this week. “We hugged on the field, and he grabbed me kind of hard. It’s just special. To end it, whenever it ends, then so be it.” METRO

Abraham likely to play vs. 49ers Falcons defensive end John Abraham, a name all too familiar to Jets fans, plans to play against the 49ers on Sunday (3 p.m., FOX). “Oh, yeah, you know me, you can’t keep me out of that game,” Abraham told The Atlanta JournalConstitution this week. “We’re going to treat the hell out of it.” Pardon Jets fans if they find irony in that quote. Abraham famously sat out a playoff game in 2002 against Oakland with the flu. But Abraham, who has 10 sacks this season, will be a crucial component in stopping Niners QB Colin Kaepernick. METRO

Schilling to auction sock If some Yankees fan has a spare $100,000, they can eradicate Curt Schilling’s bloody sock from existence. Schilling is auctioning off the infamous sock he wore during Game 6 of the 2004 ALCS in order to recoup money lost from his failed gaming company, 38 Studios. It will go up for bid online starting Feb. 4 and is expected to fetch at least $100,000.
