Brooklyn yeshiva teacher accused of molesting teen boys He reportedly molested at least four teenagers Tip-off came from a call that came to the NYPD rape hotline Incidents ranged from Brooklyn motel rooms to a Williamsburg synagogue
Sex abuse hotline for Orthodox community
On the heels of convicted child molester Nechemya Weberman’s sentencing last week to 103 years in prison, the Brooklyn Hasidic community is facing the allegations of another child sex abuse in their midst. Yoel Malik, 33, was arrested last night and charged with several counts of sex abuse and endangering the welfare of a child, based on reports that he molested at least four teenage boys. Malik and the four victims are all members of the Satmar sect and part of the Hasidic community in Brooklyn. Malik was a teacher at the Yeshiva OhrHameir, which is reportedly closed for financial reasons. All of the victims were students at the school during the 2011-12 school year. Nechemya Weberman, an unlicensed therapist jailed for molesting a young girl sent to him for counseling, was also a member of the Brooklyn Satmar Hasidic community. The NYPD rape hotline received an anonymous

Thugs with nunchucks attack for jacket
The city is unrolling a new plan to provide repairs to public housing, Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced on Jan. 31. The current wait for non-emergency public housing repairs is two years. With $40 million that is being saved from reduced administrative costs, the New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) plans to complete all 420,000 repair requests on its properties by end of this year. Three teens assaulted a 25year-old man Sunday afternoon at the West 157 Street subway station in Washington Heights. The assailants approached the victim on the mezzanine of the station and told him they liked his jacket and wanted it. They beat and kicked him and when he resisted, one of the suspects began to beat him with a pair of nunchucks. The victim was able to escape through the turnstile and was treated at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital and released with

In 2009, the Brooklyn DA’s office set up a hotline, referred to as Kol Tzedek, specifically for sex abuse victims in the Orthodox Jewish community. DA spokesman Sandy Silverstein said they’ve “gotten a number of calls” but did not provide exact figures. Silverstein said that since it was established in 2009, the hotline has resulted in more than 100 cases (not necessarily convictions). The call reporting the allegations against Malik did not go through Kol Tzedek, according to Silverstein.

Police arrested a man for public lewdness. Cops said yesterday that Dagoberto Amaya, 32, was arrested and charged with public lewdness and endangering the welfare of a child. Many New Yorkers have ducked out of the way as a delivery biker careened down a street, rushing to make a delivery on time. In an effort to make street users safer, the Department of Transportation announced Jan. 31, that it will give 1,500 cyclists safety gear in partnership with Delivery.com. The safety initiative, called SaferHood, will distribute bells, bike lights and reflective vests. The equipment will be given out at forums around the city, where business owners and cyclists can learn about bike safety laws. DOT instructors visit businesses — 3,530 since July, according to the city — to tell them they must provide helmets, bikes, vests and ID numbers to delivery bikers. Beginning in April, DOT employees will enforce rules requiring deliv-

o I watched with interest as D.C. lawmakers tackled the issue of gun control in a jampacked, emotional hearing just a few days ago. Their success or failure in turning the pathos into meaningful legislation will depend on which target they choose. The first target, a measureable reduction in gun violence, is hard to get into the crosshairs. In 2011, the FBI says “firearms were used in 67.8 percent of the nation’s murders, 41.3 percent of the robberies and 21.2 percent of the aggravated assaults.” In raw numbers, that means one of us pulled out a gun and pointed it at someone else at least 1,120,139 times. Each incident brought its own circumstances. Some shooters were run-of-the-mill criminals. Some were deranged. Some were furious. Some may have been great fans of violent video games, and others were not. Quoted Some were bullied in school, and were bullies. “Some were others Although the weapon of bullied in choice was often a handgun, the school, and variety was vast: small and large calibers; single shots, revolvers others were and semi-autos; guns with extended magazines and guns bullies.” without — each obtained in its own way. Clearly many politicians — both for gun rights and gun control — would genuinely like to see less gun violence and to find the magic legislation that will produce fewer shots in the night, fewer heartbroken families and fewer horrifying headlines. But crafting such a law against that complicated background will be undeniably difficult. That’s why they so often aim for the second target, the one that makes it look like they are trying to do something so they’ll get credit from voters. You hold hearings, you express your outrage and you introduce measures that don’t have a chance of passing or that will produce no meaningful results, just so you can say you did. That’s an easy target to hit, and, most often, a meaningless one.

Grand Central Terminal Iconic New York landmark celebrates a century Station has bounced back from despair of the 1970s Each day draws hundreds of thousands of tourists, commuters and shoppers
MILES DIXON/METRO
Equal parts transit hub and tourist destination, Grand Central Terminal celebrates its 100th birthday on Friday, Feb. 1. The iconic station has experienced its share of difficulties over the years, most notably when it fell into disrepair and was nearly wrecked to make way for a skyscraper. But with the help of renovations, it has reemerged as a beloved architectural gem, visited by roughly 750,000 people each day. “The design is impeccable,” said MTA spokeswoman Marjorie Anders. “The feeling that you get when you walk into the main concourse with its soaring arched ceiling and its magnificent monumental windows and the stars coming down, it has a visceral effect on people.” Most visitors to the terminal ride the subway or Metro-North trains, check out the 35 eating establishments or 68 shops, take a walking tour or self-guided audio tour or just pass through to avoid bad weather outside. Others are content simply to gawk up at the ceiling in wonder, much the

performances will take place virtually all day Feb. 1 in the station’s main concourse. A celebrity-filled opening ceremony and the unveiling of a new U.S. Postal Service stamp are also on the agenda, and retailers will be selling certain items at 1913 prices. Later on in the year, Grand Central’s Vanderbilt Hall and its New York Transit Museum Gallery Annex will host various art exhibitions, along with a poetry reading. Meanwhile, historic train cars such as “The 20th Century Limited” will be displayed on May 11 and 12.

same way people did when Grand Central Terminal first opened in 1913. In fact, shipping tycoon Cornelius Vanderbilt completed the first Grand Central, called Grand Central Depot, even earlier. “When he built the original one [in 1871], it was far out of town,” said Anthony W. Robins, co-author of “Grand Central Terminal: 100 Years of a New York Landmark.” “The city was concentrated much further south.” In 1900, the depot was renamed Grand Central Station following a large expansion effort. Two years later, however, a train colli-

sion in a smoke-filled tunnel killed 15 and injured 38, prompting demands for electric trains to replace steam-powered ones. That’s exactly what the station’s owners decided to do. During the construction of Grand Central Terminal from 1903 to 1913, they electrified and buried the tracks, which used to look somewhat like Sunnyside Yards in Queens. “It really created East Midtown,” Robins said in reference to the new buildings that popped up on site. People originally flocked there in droves. In

Nonetheless, it eventually began to deteriorate as focus shifted from train to car and air travel.
“It was dangerous, it was filthy and there was a huge homeless population,” Robins said. In the 1970s, the city — with the help of celebrities like Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis — narrowly averted an attempt to replace the structure with a 55-story skyscraper. Renovations have since restored its former splendor. “It’s come through all of these hard times,” Robins said. “In a way it’s mirrored the progress of the city over the last 40 years.” Jesse Greenspan letters@metro.us

Nicholas Hoult discusses the zombie love in his new film ‘Warm Bodies’ Why playing an undead boyfriend might be the easiest role around
N
SUMMIT ENTERTAINMENT
icholas Hoult has tackled trying to get the girl when you’re an awkward tween (in “About a Boy”), a ruthless highschooler (in TV’s “Skins”) and a blue-haired mutant (in “X-Men: First Class”). But those challenges pale in comparison to “Warm Bodies,” in which he tries to win over a girl (Teresa Palmer) despite the fact that he’s a flesh-eating zombie.
scene]. So I’ve made a few terrible zombie jokes, but I haven’t actually been on the receiving end of that many so far. OK, zombies versus vampires. Where do you stand?
Who would win in a fight? Or the transition from vampire to zombie time? As far as pop culture.
You know what? I’m trying to think. Aside from “Twilight,” what other vampire films have their been particularly recently? That’s the prominent one. To be honest with you, I would probably have to go with the zombie thing just because I really like “Shaun of the Dead” and “Zombieland” and those sort of things, and “28 Days Later” and stuff, so I think I’d go for the zombie — and not just because I played one in this film.
How tough is it doing a role that’s basically one facial expression for most of the film?
Surprisingly easy, actually. [Laughs] Narrows down your options and what you have to do at work, and not a lot of dialogue to learn, which is beautiful. But yeah, I read the script and I was like, “This could be a cool film,” and then I was like, “Oh, it’s kind of tricky, though, isn’t it?” You don’t get to say a lot, and you’ve got to move and act like a zombie, but you’ve also got to have this audience care for you and want you to succeed and have this girl care for you enough and fall for you, and there’s a lot to do. With Teresa, it was just basically watching her do scenes the whole time, her just doing monologue after monologue and then I’d go, “Yeah, keep you safe. Hungry. Eat. Whatever.” [Laughs]
After this film, do you think you’d have trouble getting excited about doing a more traditional romantic comedy?
I don’t know. I mean, I’m a sucker for a rom-com. You know, you feel good and you get all gooey. But I wouldn’t want to do one of those ones that’s very runof-the-mill, out of the box, off you go, pay $10 to go and see it and then sit there and nothing new happens. So it’s tricky. I’d like to be able to do all types of films. Action, drama, romance, all of them. Just this year you’ve got films in several different genres coming out.
Have you heard every zombie joke in the world at this point?
You know what, I’ve made a few terrible ones myself. I’ve said, like, “Oh, he’s a character I really liked and wanted to bring to life.” Idiot. I said of the scenes with me and Rob Corddry I found it really difficult not to corpse [which is British slang for laughing during a

If the roles become far and fewer between, then that’s OK too because then I’ll find other things to do.”

METRO MBA WEEKEND
FEBRUARY 1-3, 2013 letters@metro.us
Which MBA study format is right for you? With more ways of studying for an MBA now available than ever before, choosing the right MBA program can be complicated. So what are the options?
Full-time MBA The full-time MBA program is the most renowned of all MBA degrees and, according to research by TopMBA.com, is the preferred option for more than 55% of MBA candidates. Students can expect to rub shoulders with a wide range of people from diverse backgrounds. As such, the full-time MBA program gives students unrivalled access to a peer-to-peer education with talented businesspeople from all over the world.
One- or two-year MBA degrees? U.S. business schools tend to offer two-year MBA programs, but in Europe and elsewhere the preferred model is the one-year program. The two-year option generally has an assisted internship during the intermediate summer, and it allows greater time for personal development and networking. The one-year option is extremely intense and will take up almost all of the student’s time. However, the course will be less of a financial investment and will mean less time out of the workplace.
Part-time MBA Though the full-time MBA degree program is the preferred method of study for most people considering a business education, a part-time MBA program offers distinct advantages. The part-time option minimizes the disruption to a candidate’s personal and professional life, allowing them to stay in work and to pay their way through earning an MBA degree. Many of the best business schools now have very viable part-time MBA courses that take place after work, at weekends or during holiday periods. The downside is that juggling various
commitments while staying on top of the syllabus can be extremely demanding.
Distance-learning MBA With the technological advances of the Internet over the past two decades, both online and distance-learning programs have become increasingly popular. In the past, the varying quality of programs meant employers generally favored graduates from full- or part-time campus-based programs. However, greater accreditation and the increased popularity of these courses mean this perception is rapidly changing. While the majority of study is via the Internet, distance learning MBA students are required to attend some on-campus sessions, exams and networking events.
Online MBA Online MBA courses are designed for convenient access from anywhere in the world with an Internet connection. Many of these schools argue that MBA students are taught very similar, if not the same, curricula — so theoretically they graduate with the same skills. If you are considering an online MBA course but don’t know which course to choose, it can be useful to look at business schools that have already been accredited after operating regular MBA courses on campus for many years.
Executive MBAs Designed for professionals with six or more years of work experience, an executive MBA (EMBA) is an MBA catered for those who wish to continue working while pursuing an MBA. The EMBA program is delivered in a part-time format over a period of around 12 to 24 months, allowing participants to study while they work. Course format varies between program, from weekend or evening sessions to more modular approaches. TOPMBA.COM

MBA guide
MBA admissions checklist Admissions tests, interviews, essays, rĂŠsumĂŠs and English language tests can all play a vital role for business school admission departments when selecting which candidates to accept and who they should reject from their MBA programs ISTOCK
The MBA admissions process can be long and complicated.
References Professional references or letters of recommendation are a requirement at many schools. While the emphasis each MBA admissions department places on these references can vary substantially, in cases where two similar applicants have applied but only one place is available, they could well be the difference between success and rejection.
MBA admission tests
The often-feared Graduate Management Admission Test is the most common of all admission tests for MBA programs. As of June 2012, the GMAT now consists of four sections: Quantitative, Verbal, an Analytical Writing Assessment and Integrated Reasoning. GMAT scores are required in applications to many of the top MBA programs. However, there are alternatives. While the Graduate Record Examination is designed as a standardized test for many different graduate programs, more and more business schools are ac-
The pursuit of an MBA can be a competitive endeavor.
cepting it each year. Many business schools run their own MBA admission tests. These usually follow similar styles and test structures to the GMAT; however, they are conducted by the schools
themselves, allowing them to ensure tests adequately evaluate candidate performance according to their own programs.
Admissions essays MBA admissions essays are a requirement for nearly all of the top business schools. Instead of traditional essays, candidates are usually required to write about their suitability for the MBA program to which they are applying. When applying to multiple schools, it can be the case that many of the essay questions are quite similar. Successful applicants reject the urge to submit the same essays, instead writing passages that specifically refer to the school in question. TOPMBA.COM
Interviews Usually reserved for MBA applicants who have progressed through the admissions components, interviews can be the final stage in the process. MBA admission interviews can be conducted by various different representatives: the admissions departments themselves, previous alumni or even businesspeople with a link to the school. While some interviews may take place in an informal setting, candidates should always remember that they are being judged on their suitability for an MBA program and should act accordingly. Further requirements may be asked of candidates depending on the school and the background of the candidate. For instance, English language test scores will usually be required from applicants who come from non-English speaking countries.

Advice
First steps for choosing the right business school Business schools are not all the same. Carefully research your choice of school to ensure that it matches your requirements.
and help you make a more focused selection of schools.
1
2
Determine why you want an MBA: The very first step is to analyze your personal motivations for pursuing an MBA. Are you a career switcher or a career progresser? Do you want to carry on working while you take your MBA or do want to focus on your studies and consider your options? Is a jump in salary what matters most or do you seek international experience? Is your primary goal to broaden your education and your horizons or to develop specialist skills for career enhancement? An honest self-assessment will save you a great deal of time and energy
Identify your career goals: The second thing to do when considering business school is to try to narrow down the types of career you might like to pursue, balanced by a realistic self-assessment of your current abilities and skills base. Examine your motives carefully. Determining where you want to work after your studies should be a major part of this process.
3
Figure out your budget and study mode: The full-time MBA is still by far the most popular program in terms of candidate numbers. Part-time and
executive MBA programs are growing in popularity, but are still in the minority. The standard period for a full-time MBA program in the USA is two years. Tuition at schools such as Wharton, Harvard and Stanford are approximately $50,000 to $60,000 per annum.
4
Know the criteria for your choice of school: International reputation is one of the most important selection criteria, as is career placement and return on investment. Other criteria include: scholarship availability, specializations, rankings, teaching style, profile of students/alumni, quality of faculty research, course length and location. TOPMBA.COM

Much of the hype for Tennessee William’s “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof,” now at Richard Rodgers Theatre, focuses on its top-name cast. Some can’t wait to see Tony winner Debra Monk stalk the stage as Big Mama. Others are eager to watch bombshell Scarlett Johansson lead as Maggie (the Cat). With a run time of nearly three hours, the show’s two intermissions seem like welcome reprieves from the laborious cat-and-mouse games that take place as potential heirs vie for the vast plantation owned by dying patriarch Big Daddy (Ciaran Hinds). That’s because it’s not a play that can rest on its plot. Most of the big secrets — to be held up and turned in the light like fine yet flawed gems — come out in the first act. Afterward, it’s just a matter of seeing how the

characters bait one another with these revelations and adjust to each other’s feints. To that end, the impetus should undoubtedly be placed on the actors. Unknowns with something to prove might have added a sense of rawness and purity that this production desperately craves; these cast members are more like show diamonds
already indelibly cut and comfortable in their grooves. Aside from the lush set (literally; its bedroom/bar combo more than underscores the dual demons of Brick, played unevenly by Benjamin Walker), director Rob Ashford also focuses on distinctive offstage sound effects, such as shouts, laughter and fireworks, that punctuate the play’s most riveting tension. But the too-perfect timing make it hard to believe that a party is actually going on beyond the sumptuous suite where the action takes place. Ashford’s energies may have been best invested in the character’s beats in order to further complicate what is, at its heart, not as much feline but a very human play. T. Michelle Murphy

not been killed by cuteness. Far from it: The actor was all business refereeing “Puppy Bowl IX,” the annual Animal Planet game that pits one adorable team of puppies against another. He talked with us about making sure the pups play a clean game, the newest addition of hedgehog cheerleaders and about looking out for No. 1 (and 2).
Catch “Puppy Bowl IX” on Sunday at 3 p.m. on Animal Planet.
Have there been any rumors of off-field puppy doping?
There is a rigorous medical exam and physical for all the pups. We can’t have them disgrace “Puppy Bowl’s” good name after all. They are aware of the strict consequences if any tests should come back positive. The kittens, on the other hand, are addicted to cat nip, but we go easy on them since the are always nervous before the
What precautions do you have in place to make sure the Puppy Bowl doesn’t become a “Poopy Bowl”?
Even with all the precautions, there really is no way to prevent a “Poopy Bowl.” These pups only have one thing on their mind — playing a great game and scoring as many touchdowns as possible. If an on-field accident should occur (and they do), we need to act fast to clean up the “foul” before it affects the action on the field. Puppies will be puppies, even when they’re playing football in a mini stadium.
Who will be MVP?
Dan Schachner will never pay more attention to where he steps than during the action on the field.

Baby hedgehogs will be the cheerleaders. Can they get the crowd going?
These are tough hedgehogs with a lot of spirit! Personally, I think they out-pep last year’s Piggy Pep Squad but don’t quote me on that. You’ll see the hedgehogs in tutus with miniature footballs rooting for their favorite pups throughout the game on Sunday.

But all it is is you can see where I was last weekend. That’s all. And I think time has shown that nothing will be stolen from you. It’s just a photograph of you and your dumb scarf that you put on because it wouldn’t fit in your suitcase. Cool.”

Aries March 21-April 19. The enthusiasm and optimism you show will have a contagious effect on your associates, which will help you in return. You need others’ feedback as much as they need your input. Taurus April 20-May 20. One of the reasons you’re likely to

thing to publish letters that attempt to make a valid argument against the GOP and the policies it supports. It’s completely pointless and a waste of space to publish letters like Robert La Rosa’s about giving an Oscar to the GOP. Was his point that he feels the GOP is “pretending” to work in the best interests of the people of the U.S. and your editors agree with him so his letter was published? He’s entitled to his opinion and I have mine about people like Mr. La Rosa who blindly follow the Democrats and their policies without stopping to think about the longterm ramifications of them. There’s plenty of criticism that can made to people on both sides of the aisle, but people like Mr. La Rosa never criticize any Democrats. When President Obama was a senator in 2006, he made a speech explaining why he was voting against raising the debt ceiling and in that speech he said: “Washington is shifting the burden of bad choices today onto the backs of our children and grandchil-
RE: “SECOND AMENDMENT PROTECTS RIGHT TO BEAR ARMS” (METRO, JAN. 31)
First of all, the framers of our Constitution gave us all a weapon against thugs and tyranny: the government established under the Constitution. I have yet to see a constitution, anywhere in the world, which enshrines a right of armed revolt against the very government it establishes. We only have to look to the suppression of the Whisky rebellion in 1794 to see the fallacy of the contention that the Second Amendment was set up to resist tyranny. Second, the founding fathers did indeed view wellregulated, well-disciplined and well-organized militias when they wrote the Second Amendment. They know that a group of armed men does not constitute a “militia” and they remembered that poorlytrained militias cost us battles during the Revolution. JON MELICK, VIA E-MAIL

Jersey Joe Flacco Ravens QB started his career in southern New Jersey Trained for NFL at TEST Academy Has risen to biggest stage in football GETTY IMAGES
Joe Flacco’s path to the NFL — and Super Bowl XLVII — was as unassuming as the quarterback himself. When Flacco committed to Pittsburgh in late December of his senior year at Audobon High School, southeast of Camden, N.J., he wasn’t a big-name recruit. After transferring to Delaware, he led the Blue Hens to the playoffs twice and the championship game in 2007. Flacco began preparing for the NFL Draft with former Giants quarterback Scott Brunner at TEST Football Academy in New Jersey. Flacco’s successful postseason hasn’t been a surprise to Brunner. “Joe was an extremely talented quarterback when he came to us out of college,” Brunner said. “Like most guys preparing for the NFL, they rarely need a major overhaul, but rather modifications to their technique.” Flacco has thrown for 853 yards this postseason, with eight touchdowns and no interceptions. More than anything, it is his calm, unflappable style

Get prop-ing Sure, you can bet on the Super Bowl itself (the Niners are at -4), but the real fun is in prop bets. How long will the national anthem be? Odds: Over 2:10 (Even), Under (-140) Our take: Alicia Keys is known for stretching out chords, but the recent average is 1:40, so we go under. Will Jay-Z join Beyonce during halftime show? Odds: Yes (-105), No (-135) Our take: As much as we would love to see the king and queen of hiphop perform together, it’s not likely to happen.

that is translating to wins. “There were many who thought he needed to show a more fiery personality,” Brunner said. “I knew that if he tried to be something he wasn’t, his teammates would see right through that act. ... I think the leadership torch of the Ravens is now being passed to Joe.” Kristian Dyer sports@metro.us

City prepares for 2014 Super Bowl The counter on the website for the NY/NJ 2014 Super Bowl Host Committee updated Thursday to read 367 days until Super Bowl XLVIII comes to New York City. CEO of the 2014 NY/NJ Super Bowl Host Committee Alfred F. Kelly
Jr. said things are moving forward as he observes this year’s game. “There’s no real available game plan. It’s learning on the fly and taking what you can from the other cities that have done it. [We are] really taking advantage of the experience of the NFL that have done their 47th Super Bowl,” Kelly said. METRO/KD
