South Philadelphia-bred rock ‘n’ roll pioneer Chubby Checker is in a twist — and he’s not performing a rendition of the dance he popularized in the 1960s.

Checker, also known as Ernest Evans, has filed a $500 million trademark infringement lawsuit against Hewlett Packard over an app previously available for Palm operating systems. Titled “The Chubby Checker,” the program claims to calculate a man’s penis prowess based on his shoe size through a “foot-tochubby converter.”

“This lawsuit is about preserving the integrity and legacy of a man who has spent years working hard at his musical craft and has earned the position of one of the greatest musical entertainers of all time,” Evans’ attorney Willie Gary said in a statement.

“We cannot sit idly and watch as technology giants or anyone else exploits the name or likeness of an innocent person with the goal of making millions of dollars.”

A complaint filed last week in federal court says the software title is misleading and “likely to associate plaintiffs’ marks with the obscene sexual connotation and images” the app evokes. It claims that association “will diminish and destroy the positive associations the public has of the Chubby Checker name.”

FBI uncovers new clues in decade-long child sex abuse investigation

The FBI is asking for the public’s help in identifying two unknown men who may be able to provide details about the identity of a child sex abuse victim whose image was first recorded in 2003 by the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.

Agents from the Philadelphia field office said in a news release yesterday that one clue recovered from those images — a picture of a yellow T-shirt with the outline of a basketball and the text “New Market Basketball” — has led them to believe at least one of the men they’re searching for may have a connection to New Market, Pa. They are also combing similarly titled towns in Maryland, Delaware, New

Ten months after it opened, Revel casino filed for bankruptcy.

Officials with Revel announced Tuesday night that it will file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in March. In a news release, officials said it will reduce about two-thirds of its $1 billion debt by exchanging its debt for equity to lenders.

“This restructuring positions Revel for long-term success,” said Michael Garrity, Revel’s chief investment officer.

Lenders will provide Revel with about $250 mil-

lion, but the company will remain in control of the casino’s assets.

The company’s financial shuffling is expected to finish by the end of spring. No layoffs or management changes are planned, and employees and vendors are expected to be paid on time.

Once considered the next big thing in Atlantic City gaming and entertainment, the flashy $2.4 billion casino, which opened in April, couldn’t trump the cash flow of Atlantic City’s 12 other casinos.

High school teacher attacked by outsider wielding a hammer A 19-year-old man allegedly attacked an Upper Darby High School teacher with a claw hammer after student dismissal Tuesday afternoon, officials said.

Darlington James, of Upper Darby, sneaked into the school building just after the school day ended, wrestled with a female teacher and tried to steal her laptop, said Michael Chitwood, Upper Darby School district superintendent.

“It’s tragic,” Chitwood said. “I mean, teachers are attacked everyday, but not in a violent, robbery attack. … Unfortunately, they’re in there trying to do good and these bums that go in there are trying to raise hell.”

James wrestled the teacher to the ground. He jumped up and grabbed the teacher’s computer and ran out of the room.

Police apprehended James as he fled the school.

Chitwood said James is believed to be involved in about six similar crimes.

Chitwood listed a number of plausible, equally awful outcomes: rape, torture, murder.

“But she was feisty,” he said. “She fought him and screamed for help, and that’s apparently what drove him away.”

A witness heard “nonstop shouting” in the home of South African athletics star Oscar Pistorius shortly before his girlfriend was shot dead, the detective leading the murder investigation said yesterday.

Court says no to immigrants with guilty pleas The U.S. Supreme Court declined yesterday to apply retroactively a 2010 ruling that requires lawyers to tell immigrant clients that they can be deported if they plead guilty to certain crimes.

The 7-2 decision was a defeat for thousands of immigrants who might have been able to withdraw guilty pleas in cases alleging ineffective counsel.

These cases predated

the court’s March 2010 ruling in Padilla v.

Kentucky that immigrants should be told some consequences of guilty pleas.

In yesterday’s majority opinion, Justice Elena Kagan said the Padilla ruling did not apply to cases that were already final after an appeal.

She said it would not have been apparent to a typical judge before that ruling that the Sixth Amendment right to a competent lawyer extended to advising immigrants about deportation risks. REUTERS

ike father, like son: Jai Courtney plays Jack McClane, son of police badass John McClane, in “A Good Day to Die Hard.” We chatted him up about his prep for the role and the stunts he pulled off.

You totally upstage Bruce Willis in this movie. How does he feel about that? He must be mad, no?

Oh gosh! I don’t know. You might have to ask him.

I’m not speaking to him.

You can tell me.

He’s the star. I will always respect that. I certainly have no intention of upstaging him.

Q&A You were a kid when the original “Die Hard” movie came out. Which movie is your favorite?

No. 1. Not only is it the introduction to this

Did you have to get in shape for the role?

Did you and Bruce train together? Did he teach you any good moves?

A little bit. It made sense to. I’m not a gym junkie, but I’ve had to get in shape for a few gigs and I enjoy having to do that.

I learned a lot from him.

What was your diet and exercise regime like?

I was doing a lot of low-impact cardio, like walking and jogging. I’d go first thing in the morning before having anything to eat. It starts up your body engine and speeds up your metabolism. I did a little bit of

weight work. But ever since “Spartacus,” I’ve not worked with a trainer. I don’t want to be pushed that hard. I’m too fond of beer and pizza to live my life by that kind of code.

Which stunts did you do?

We did pieces of just about everything. But it’s unfair not to credit the 20-30 doubles and stunt coordinators that help make them look really cool.

So did you actually do

anything?

Absolutely. We’re jumping out windows, crashing the vehicles and getting into fights. But insurance companies would have something to say if we tried to attempt it all ourselves.

Bruce Willis is on his fifth Die Hard. This is your first.

What tips did he give you for being the perfect John McClane Jr.?

He didn’t give me any tips.

The kind of knowledge and

wisdom that he passed on to me was more organic. I just learned a lot from working with the guy. It wasn’t, “Come here boy, let me show you how to do it.”

Willis’ catchphrase is Yippee-ki-yay. How come you don’t have one? Make one up now.

I have no idea. I’ll leave it to the professionals.

You guys have been doing this together for a bit. At what point do you just start messing with each other in interviews?

ROB CORDDRY: God no!

JESSICA ALBA: I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t know.

In defense of the short, the skinny and the small

T

he secret is out, ladies: Guys know we talk about their junk. It’s funny, because as a guy reminded me recently, guys “don’t go around talking about girls’ vaginas.” If they did, we’d probably call them pigs and think they’re immature.

It may not be something that guys often complain about out loud, but they too feel objectified. As a result, they’re insecure about their bodies. Many guys who are short feel disqualified by girls before they even have a chance to prove themselves. A short guy complained to me that even his cute face and bulky muscles didn’t seem like enough because he isn’t tall.

Other guys worry about being too skinny. As one of my clients confessed, “I’m always worried about how skinny I am. I don’t know if [girls] see me as manly.” At the other end of the spectrum are guys who have gained a few pounds.

make great efforts to watch what they eat and count calories.

Since they’re guys, often they don’t feel comfortable expressing their concerns.

We may assume that

body issues are “a girl thing.” Maybe because of this we feel justified gossiping about how much heat a guy is packing or ignoring online dating messages from short guys. But not only are we hurting guys’ feelings when we do this, we’re limiting our dating pool based on shallow criteria — criteria that makes us cringe when the situation is reversed.

If we don’t want guys judging us by the numbers (height, weight, bra size), then we shouldn’t judge them on those things either. I’m not suggesting dating someone you’re not attracted to, but I am urging you not to disqualify people based on shallow criteria before taking the time to see if you could be attracted to them or not.

Alex Karpovsky of ‘Girls’ talks about the two new films he’s directed, loneliness and being attracted to stories of misfortune

B

est known for his role as Ray Ploshansky on HBO’s “Girls,” indie filmmaker Alex Karpovsky helmed both films of a double feature slated for a limited release at Lincoln Center this Friday.

Karpovsky wrote, directed and stars in both “Red Flag” and “Rubberneck.”

“Red Flag” tells the story of a filmmaker on a lonely road-trip, and “Rubberneck” centers on an introverted scientist whose infatuation with a co-worker turns into obsession. Karpovsky spoke with us about what draws him into a story, getting into character and what loneliness does to his head.

You tend to play characters at a crossroads in their lives.

They’re living through difficult times, jilted in love — is this something you seek out?

I do seek it out to some extent. “Rubberneck,” “Red Flag” and “Girls” are largely character-driven. I think stories of people in transition are naturally interesting. That’s where all the juicy stuff is.

Would you say that you’re a romantic? I think a lot of people would say that the Ray and Shoshanna arc is their favorite in “Girls.”

In “Girls,” I try to understand what they want from me, and it’s usually something that I have a lot of fun doing. In my own projects, I tend toward stories driven by misfortune. In a lot of ways, Edward Meadham and Benjamin Kirchhoff aptly represent what we look to London Fashion Week for: wild eccentricity and creative risk.

So it’s fitting that their artful work kind of served as a parting note for England’s shows. This wasn’t exactly the place to go for wearable, commercial clothes. The collection was dense with challenging shapes (who can pull off those ruffled vinyl trousers?) and ideas (those strong Edwardian, Vatican and medieval references) that wouldn’t translate easily to a morning train commute or even the average special occasion. Instead, their work pointedly reminded us that in an era where fashion is overrun with disposable images of unbridled consumption, it can still reach the creative heights of fine art.

Think of the children, but feel sorry for the dog RE: “ARE PEOPLE MORE UPSET OVER MINDY MCCREADY’S DOG THAN HER CHILDREN?” (METRO, FEB. 19) Well, yes — she

killed her dog, not her children. If she had killed children and left her dog behind, I’m sure the focus of the tragedy would then have been on the human victims. Besides, I imagine most people suspect the children will be less scarred without her.

Alan Brown missed the point that article was trying to make, judging by the first-person narrative response submitted. I see and get you points, but I also understood the point to the original article. I guess you never had the pleasure of reading a letter from a relative who passed long before you were born.
