Man shot, killed outside strip club RIKARD LARMA/METRO

A 23-year-old man was gunned down last night outside a South Philadelphia gentleman’s club, police said.

Around 4:35 a.m., the man, who has not yet been identified, was shot in the jaw and back in the parking lot of Club Onyx, at 2908 S. Columbus Blvd.

The man was rushed to Temple University

The Onyx parking lot was the scene of a shooting early yesterday morning.

Hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

Police have made no arrests in the case and the investigation is still ongoing.

This is the second major shooting at the club in a little more than a year. A 26-year-old man was shot in the chest on the club’s front porch in February 2012. METRO

Yesterday’s shooting was the second at Onyx in 13 months.

That shooting, also outside the strip club, was reportedly the result of an argument between two men.

The victim also died.

State reps: Gov. liquor plan ‘hypocritical’ State representatives Ed Neilson and Paul Costa are calling Gov. Tom Corbett's liquor plan hypocritical to small businesses and educators.

The reps said the governor has claimed to be a “champion” of the state’s small, familyowned businesses, but that his plan actually threatens those businesses.

“Under the Corbett plan, a license to expand into wine and spirit sales would cost beer distributors $150,000, while giant retail competitors with enormous profit margins would only pay $25,000 to $35,000 — small change for WalMart or Target,” the two say in an open letter.

Montco stab suspect still on the run

A family member is wanted in connection with the attempted murder of a 33-year-old Montgomery County woman, according to reports.

An arrest warrant has been issued for Thomas Troy Young, 49, who is suspected of stabbing the woman early Sunday morning in Hatfield, reports say.

Teens turned in for robbing girl, 9 Boys’ parents brought them to police after seeing video Both to be charged with robbery The parents of two boys seen on video snatching a 9-year-old girl’s wallet, which contained $13, outside an East Germantown convenience store turned their children in to police.

On Friday morning, the two boys, 13 and 14, watched the third-grader make a purchase inside Jaques Mini-Market, which is located at Wakefield and Ashmead streets. The juveniles then went outside and waited for the girl to leave the store. Once outside, the boys stopped the

girl on the 5200 block of Wakefield Street and grabbed her wallet, which contained $13. The boys then fled east on Ashmead Street.

Police promptly posted

the store’s video surveillance, which caught the boys in action, on YouTube. The video, seen above, was watched more than 1,000 times by the end of the weekend.

About three hours after the incident, the first boy was dragged to the 14th Police District by his mother. About an hour later the second boy’s parents called the station. Both saw the surveillance footage and recognized their sons.

Florida Gov. Jeb Bush appeared on five morning talk shows yesterday to plug his new book on immigration, but he said his heightened visibility does not mean he is re-entering politics or planning a White House run — not yet, anyway.

The talk-show marathon capped a busy week of public appearances for Bush, one of several Republicans seen as potential contenders for the 2016 presidential nomination. Bush said it is too early to seriously ponder a White House bid. “I’ve decided to defer any consideration of it until the proper time ... which is out more than a year from now, for sure,�

Roman Catholic cardinals prayed yesterday for spiritual guidance ahead of a closed-door conclave to choose a new pope to lead the church at one of the most difficult periods in its history.

Cardinals will hold a final pre-conclave meeting today to discuss the state of their church, left reeling by the abdication last month of Pope Benedict and struggling to deal with a string of sexual abuse and corruption scandals.

The 115 cardinals who will take part in the secret ballots, which start on March 12, fanned out around Rome yesterday to hold myriad Masses, either in the quiet of private chapels or in the grandeur of Rome’s great cathedrals and basilicas.

Has viral marketing gone too far? An ad for a new film raises debate

What would you do if you saw a man strangling another man in an elevator?

Would you step in and help? Would you call the police? Would you run like hell?

Some pseudo-sociologists-turned-filmmakers decided to test people’s reactions to this shocking scenario in an online video called “Elevator Murder Experiment� (watch it at http://goo.gl/wKB1W).

But it's actually an advertisement for “Dead Man Down,� the latest film from the original “The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo� director Niels Arden Oplev (and starring Noomi Rapace and Colin Farrell).

The YouTube clip was created by viral video marketing agency Thinkmodo. So

The staged part mimics a key scene in the film where one main character witnesses another lead character strangling someone to death. She records the incident on her phone — and later uses it for blackmail.

There are other subtle clues that tie the viral video to the movie.

Krivicka says the last word flashed before the viewer sees the movie title is “revenge,� another key theme of “Dead Man Down.�

outh Korean filmmaker Park Chanwook has been a staple of foreign genre cinema since 2000’s border action film “Joint Security Area.” But he’s still best known for his “Vengeance Trilogy,” comprising “Sympathy For Mr. Vengeance,” “Sympathy for Lady Vengeance” and its centerpiece, “Oldboy,” famous for both its hallway hammer fight barnstormer and a scene where its lead slurps up a live octopus. Park makes a perhaps belated debut in America, but he does it his way: “Stoker,” starring Mia Wasikowska, Matthew Goode and Nicole Kidman, is a stylish Gothic thriller about family secrets, outre

What made you want to make a film in America?

It took me 10 years to make [my previous film] “Thirst,” from the very inception to finish. After that, I had done all the films I wanted to do. I felt I was in need of a turning point in my career. I was on the lookout for a good script, and this was just a

case of good timing.

It seems like the script, though not by you, shares a lot with your previous work.

There are many ways to link this to my previous work — but when I first came across the script, I noticed the characters were different [from my previous films]. They don’t seem to have much in the way of ethical dilemmas, whereas the characters in my other films are wrought with dilemma. In “Stoker,” the characters don’t seem to have any sense of guilt. But actually it’s not that they don’t have any dilemmas or sense of guilt — they’re just better at hiding them.

Little violence There’s very little violence in “Stoker.” Was that a response to your reputation as a maker of violent films — which aren’t, it should be noted, even that graphic?

It wasn’t a function of me pulling any punches.

What sparked my inter-

est in this script was that my daughter was the same age as the protagonist here. I wanted to make a film that girls the same age as India [the lead character] would come to see. Anything that came across as overly disgusting just wouldn’t do. I simply wanted to make an elegant and beautiful film [that] girls the same age as India would enjoy.

Drink to the future ‘The Art of Noise’ is 100 years old <fidget> is hosting a Futurist party tonight to celebrate JEREMY DEPRISCO

In 1913, Italian painter and composer Luigi Russolo, a member of the futurist movement, penned “The Art of Noise,” a manifesto declaring that, with the proliferation of machinery in the early 20th century, music had to adjust to compensate for the increased noise of daily life. “We get infinitely more pleasure imagining combinations of the sounds of trolleys, autos and other vehicles, and loud crowds,” Russolo wrote, “than listening once more, for instance, to the heroic or pastoral symphonies.”

Peter Price, co-director of the experimental music and dance collective <fidget>, says that over the past 100 years the ideas in “The Art of Noise” have gone from seeming radical to being absorbed into every form of music, from the avant-garde to radio hits.

“It was the first time the idea was presented that music could be made from any sound whatsoever, not just the sounds of traditional musical instruments but the sounds of machines or the sounds of nature,” Price says. “In 1913 that was a pretty crazy idea, but now it’s become something that we live with every day.”

ith her 2008 book â&#x20AC;&#x201D; â&#x20AC;&#x153;Introvert Power: Why Your Inner Life is Your Hidden Strengthâ&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x201D; Dr. Laurie Helgoe celebrated introverts and their power to develop rich, complex inner lives. But in todayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s hyper-friendly, team-centric workplace, introverts often find their natural inclinations less than encouraged. A new edition of â&#x20AC;&#x153;Introvert Powerâ&#x20AC;? was recently released, with analysis of the latest studies on the psychology of inwardlooking personalities. Figure out who pitch to: If you have an idea for your website, there is no point in taking it to the sales department. Tailor your pitch for the specific person youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re speaking with. Ask around the office to figure out who will be the most receptive to your concept and if he or she has any pitch preferences (a quick e-mail pitch instead of a detailed proposal, for example).

Put it in writing: Writing it out will allow you to put careful thought into how your idea is presented.

Rather than word-vomiting up your pitch, you can clearly demonstrate what the problem is and how your idea is the best solution.

Use confident language and keep your pitch brief but thorough.

Your boss is a busy person and likely wonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have time to read a long e-mail,

College? Nah. You can hack it — and see the world, too In 2011, Hendrix College student Dale J. Stephens started receiving a lot of unexpected press. His website, UnCollege.org, delivered a hypercritical cost-benefit analysis of college at a time when many parents and students were questioning their faith in higher education for the first time.

In one of the many interviews Stephens gave that year, he casually mentioned that he was working on a book. He now admits that he probably should have said “thinking about,” rather than “working on”

his book, but the quote was published anyway and Stephens was soon approached by curious book agents.

Stephens got around to writing the book, and the result was released last week: “Hacking Your Education: Ditch the Lectures, Save Tens of Thousands, and Learn More Than Your Peers Ever Will.”

To be sure, Stephens approaches the issue from a unique perspective. With his family’s begrudging support, he left his California public school at

12 and developed his own curriculum right up until he took the ACT and applied to colleges.

“I spent a lot of my time in college wondering, ‘If I was able to get into college without going to high school, why is there any reason that I need to go to college to get into life?’” he says. “And why am I paying $40,000 a year for this, when I can figure out how to learn for free?”

Ayn Rand never developed a foothold in the philosophy curriculum at most U.S. colleges.

For more than 20 years, a small group of professors nationwide has been pushing to change that. And now the professors have a series of textbooks intended for the college classroom: The University of Pittsburgh Press will publish a course of books called “The Ayn Rand Society Philosophical Studies.”

“Rand is opposed to many entrenched ideas

in the academy. She was an advocate of laissez-faire capitalism as a political philosophy. And it’s wellknown that most people in the academy tend to be politically left wing, or at least liberal-leaning,” says James J. Lennox, co-editor of the new text. Based on lectures and papers by Ayn Rand Society members, the second volume, set to publish in June, will delve into her theory of epistemology.

But AR Society members are aware that books alone won’t get Rand into the classroom; they need professors willing to teach the material.

“The biggest problem is getting more people who are trained to teach objectivism into tenured positions in philosophy departments,” says Lennox. METRO/BW

and essayist who created a philosophical moment called objectivism. To date, her books have sold more than 20 million copies worldwide. She rejected self-sacrifice as a virtue and instead promoted her own concept of “rational egoism.”

Raygun gave the store away in his eight years, spending on everything and giving the rich their huge tax breaks. Cutting taxes for the rich is the same as spending on a program, because it is money going out of the U.S. Treasury. In comes Republican GWB (Guy Without Brains) and back goes the debt and soon the democrat surplus is gone. GWB accomplished this vanishing act by “spending” $10 billion a month for two wars and “spending millions of dollars of our money to give the wealthy huge tax cuts.” So “spending” is not just when the Democrats fund a social program or healthcare or the environment, it’s when these idiot Republicans blow our money spending on the rich and the military and corporations.

A lost cause is tax reform. Addressing climate change and Wall Street reform are actual lost causes.
