Two shot in bar in critical condition Two men who were shot inside a Kensington bar early Sunday remain in critical condition, police said. A 43-year-old man was shot once in the head and a 28-year-old man was shot in the leg around 1 a.m. at the 3400 block of North Water Street, according to police. Your son’s father will be part of your lives forever, so come up with some kind of balance. One day, he will wake up and own up to his responsibilities of being a dad.

Philadelphia police conducted a sweeping series of drug raids on Thursday in the East Division of the city, which covers the northern river wards and parts of North Philadelphia.

Officers served a total of 85 warrants, arrested 93 people and seized $291,781 worth of narcotics, $18,642 in cash and 23 firearms.

“It was an outstanding job by the Narcotics Field Unit, who put the initiative together,” Lt. John Stanford said on Friday.

“The East Division was selected because of the recent uptick in violence in that area, so they wanted to see what they could go after.”

The series of raids was carried out in the 24th, 25th and 26th districts beginning around 6 a.m. and ending about 12 hours later.

Judge finds two teens guilty in Steubenville rape case

Two high school football players from Ohio were found guilty yesterday of raping a 16-year-old girl at a party last summer while she was in a drunken stupor in a case that gained national exposure through social media.

Ohio authorities also promised yesterday to continue the investigation to determine if other crimes had been committed.

Trent Mays, 17, and Ma’lik Richmond, 16, two members of Steubenville’s football team, were found delinquent in the sexual assault of the girl in the early morning of Aug. 12 when witnesses said she was too drunk to move or speak.

Judge Tom Lipps ordered Richmond held in a juvenile detention facility for at least one year and Mays at least two years.

The juvenile system could hold them until age 21.

“This does not define who my daughter is,” she said in a statement. “She will persevere, grow and move on. I have pity for you both. I hope you fear the Lord, repent for your actions and pray hard for forgiveness.”

Leading congressional Republicans said yesterday a broad deal with President Barack Obama on deficit reduction and entitlement reform remains possible but differed over potential flexibility on taxes, with the House speaker and budget leader not bending.

The top Republican in Congress, House of Representatives Speaker John Boehner, and Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan also agreed with Obama’s assessment that the United States was not currently in a debt crisis, but that one was looming.

Ryan, whose budget proposal last week was dismissed by Democrats, quoted former Republican President Ronald Reagan’s 1980s view of dealing with the Soviet Union, saying that with Obama,

s SXSW comes to a close, the crowded streets of Austin will return to a more relaxed status quo.

Long gone are the days of walking the streets of Austin with a printed schedule and a highlighter. In an atmosphere that is already all about sensory overload, technology ruled SXSW this year. Parties were announced via Twitter, there was an app for schedules and oftentimes when you got to the shows most of the audience members had their heads down to text or tweet. Also, if you didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have a platinum badge, the only way to get into the Prince show was to have a Samsung Galaxy phone and complete a scavenger hunt. Prince wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t the only megastar to get Austin buzzing. Justin Timberlake, Green Day, Stevie Nicks and Dave Grohl also took part in SXSW, performing exclusive shows in small venues.

A WHALE OF A PLAY New show at the Wilma about a British fishing vessel features a hydraulic-powered set The crew hopes no one gets seasick

“These waves have been killing us.”

That’s not a line of dialogue from the Wilma Theater’s latest production, “Under the Whaleback,” though it could be. Richard Bean’s play traces the life of a British fishing vessel during three decades, including a fatal storm at sea. But in this case those words were spoken offstage, by technical director Clayton Tejada, about the intricate choreography of lights, sound and hydraulics needed to portray that storm onstage.

it to lurch up to three feet on either side. The open design of the ship’s cabin, inspired by director Blanka Zizka’s research in Hull, England, where the play is set, and on architectural drawings which Saunders studied, is meant to evoke the feeling of being on the ship itself. The sensation is enhanced by intricate

lighting schemes and forty small speakers planted under seats throughout the theater that allow the sound of the waves to wash through the audience.

“We didn’t have to have a flat set with the actors running back and forth, acting like they’re on a moving boat,” Saunders says. “I started researching a lot of blueprints of boats, architectural drawings of boats, and found the cross-sections to be really stageworthy. I didn’t want to illustrate the sea around the boat, but to focus on the boat itself as an iconic object.”

Cutler (â&#x20AC;&#x153;A Perfect Candidate,â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;The September Issueâ&#x20AC;?) delves into just what those consequences might be â&#x20AC;&#x201D; though Cheney quickly proves himself not to be one for re-evaluation. After premiering the film at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, Cutler brings his calm and levelheaded portrait of the divisive political figure to Showtime.

Was it diďŹ&#x192;cult to set aside whatever opinions you might have had of Cheney to make this ďŹ lm?

I mean, of course I have opinions about him. I have my politics, but this isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t really a film about politics.

Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve made films about people whose politics I agree with and Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve made films about people whose politics I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t agree with. In this case, Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m exploring the man but Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m also telling his story from what I believe will be a rich and valuable historical perspective as time passes. Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m not interested in films about my politics. Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m interested in Dick Cheney. I was curious about who he was and how he thinks, what led him to the decisions he made, how he acquired the power that he had and what he did with that power once it was acquired.

What do you think of the manner in which Bush and Cheney have, in a way, retreated from the public stage since leaving oďŹ&#x192;ce?

[Former] Vice President Cheney has not shied away from the public eye and has not resisted the temptation to opine on the current administration and its policies â&#x20AC;&#x201D; and its relationship to the policies he sup-

I think I was most struck by the manner in which he discussed honor and duty. He felt that when put up against each

Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not at all difficult because I focused on serious-minded people who examined his life and career and had written extensively about it. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s an extremely prominent group of supporters and detractors. The emotion of the debate and the more extreme theories that Cheneyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s detractors developed â&#x20AC;&#x201D; listen, I understand why people are emotional about him. As a citizen, [I] share a lot of those emotions. But as a filmmaker, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s very easy to separate whatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s emotional from what the evidence supports.

I know heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s given a speech or two, but I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t really feel like weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re hearing from him in the way weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve consistently [heard] from Cheney.

The new film “Lore” is even more bold: Its protagonists are the children of a Nazi SS officer. It’s a sympathetic portrayal, however, only in that these are people struggling to find a new identity after their old one had finally been revealed as, to put it lightly, ersatz.

The film doesn’t shy away from reminding us of our characters’ genocidal heritage, even as it spends most of its time humanizing them. Rosendahl, who looks uncannily Cornish-ish, is a similar find: Her performance is all in her face, not her words.

Life in Germany immediately after the fall of the Nazi Party is not terribly well-covered, particularly in film. Even the so-called “rubble films” — downer, documentary-style dramas from the late ’40s, set amidst a society plagued by devastation both physical and psychological —

The funniest film from an unfunny filmmaker Calling â&#x20AC;&#x153;Like Someone in Loveâ&#x20AC;? the funniest film by Iranian legend Abbas Kiarostami doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t exactly promise a fun night out. It would be like saying, for instance, that something is the funniest film by Adam Sandler. Kiarostami once made â&#x20AC;&#x153;Taste of Cherry,â&#x20AC;? concerning a man on the prowl for someone to bury him after heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s committed suicide. Then again, humor is detectable in even his darkest films; even â&#x20AC;&#x153;Cherryâ&#x20AC;? can be read as lightly farcical. (A very, very dark farce, mind you.) In â&#x20AC;&#x153;Love,â&#x20AC;? his sense of humor is simply more noticeable than usual.

Granted, these arenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t

gut-busting yuks. The funniest joke plays like a covert parody of the ultraascetic â&#x20AC;&#x153;master shotâ&#x20AC;? filmmaking style, of which Kiarostami is a prime practitioner. In it, a character sits at a red light â&#x20AC;&#x201D; in one long, unbroken shot, natch â&#x20AC;&#x201D; and it goes on so long he actually falls asleep. Even the plot is vaguely silly: A young prostitute (Rin Takanashi) takes up with an elderly professor (Tadashi Okuno). Her fiance (Ryo Kase) intercepts him and, oblivious, winds up bonding with him.

This is Kiarostamiâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s second trip around the globe.

Where his first, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Certified Copy,â&#x20AC;? boasted an inexplicable narrative â&#x20AC;&#x201D; and wooed viewers with Tuscany and Juliette Binoche â&#x20AC;&#x201D; the story in this, his trip to Japan, is almost comically simple, but its intentions prove far more elusive.

The easiest way in is to read it as a mordant rumi-

nation on miscommunication. Its characters are prevented from knowing each other through age, temperament and, in some cases, technology. Takanashi is a cell-phone addict whose head is permanently perched downward toward a tiny screen in her palm, her most meaningful interactions carried on via texts.

Meanwhile, Kiarostami adds to the dehumaniza-

tion with shots that position major characters in bizarre locations within frames. In the opening, the viewer has to search the image for the speaker, and one might as well take that as a metaphor for the film: Finding its â&#x20AC;&#x153;meaningâ&#x20AC;? is difficult, but not impossible.

The inoffensive ‘Burt Wonderstone’

This Steve Carell vehicle relies heavily on scene-stealing from his supporting players Serves as a comeback of sorts for the as-of-late underutilized (and lean) co-star Jim Carrey “The Incredible Burt Wonderstone” is an inoffensive Steve Carell vehicle, with breaks for supporting cast scene-stealing. As the title Las Vegas magician/institution, Carell’s a selfish egomaniac, going through the motions with much nicer assistant/lifelong friend Anton Marvelton (Steve Buscemi). Their longstanding dominance is threatened by a new kind of anti-magician, Steve Gray (Jim Carrey), who seems based on Criss Angel and David Blaine. His stunts, such as the “Brain Rapist,” have less to do with sleight of hand than sadomasochism.

Burt and Anton fail at one-upping Blaine’s stunt of hanging in a glass cube for 35 hours. They aim for a week but last 20 minutes suspended at 100 feet. This culminates in a literal and figurative fall from bankability. Anton splits while Burt rediscovers his love of magic at a nursing home under the tutelage of childhood idol Rance Halloway (Alan Arkin). Anton and Burt eventually reunite, but can they retake their rightful place from their rival?

The casting is almost backward. Since his 2005 breakout, “The 40-Year-Old Virgin,” Carell has been (with shockingly few ex-

There’s satire on the fringes. The opening act gags find Burt objectifying and harassing assistant Jane (Olivia Wilde). He apologizes for casual misogyny, and the film then moves

onto Gray abusing himself.

In the final act, Burt and Anton’s career-restoring trick (which shouldn’t be spoiled) inflicts a pain on the audience, which is what Blaine’s fans deserve for egging on physical selfdestruction as spectacle.

very life is an unfolding story with bright spots, low points and plot twists. When people lose hope, it is usually because they mistake difficult chapters in their lives for the entire plotline, and they overlook important life lessons that such chapters have to offer.

Take the 2006 blockbuster “The Pursuit of Happyness.” The true ragsto-riches film chronicles exactly 28 chapters in the life of Chris Gardener, a single father who battles homelessness and ridiculous odds to earn a coveted entry-level position at a major San Francisco brokerage firm. The genius of this film is that 27 of the

If Gardener had gotten stuck in one of these chapters, misinterpreting his difficulties as a never-ending story of struggle and victimization, he may have failed to muster the courage and resilience to succeed. Consequently, the film might have been called “Giving Up,” and its

message about triumph over adversity would have been lost.

Of course, it’s much easier to accept the meaning of difficult chapters and heart-wrenching scenes when it’s happening to someone else and we’re virtually assured of a positive outcome (after all, the film’s title suggests a Hollywood happy ending).

Combat soldiers are more likely to commit violent crimes: Study British soldiers who have served in Iraq and Afghanistan â&#x20AC;&#x201D; particularly young men and those who have seen active combat â&#x20AC;&#x201D; are more likely to commit violent crimes than their civilian counterparts, according to research published on Friday.

The study of almost 14,000 British soldiers deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan is the first to examine the link between military service and violent crime by using official criminal records.

Researchers said the findings could help military officials improve their risk assessment of violence among serving and ex-military personnel.

They stressed that although the study points to a serious problem for those affected, it does not

The study found that those in combat roles were more than 50 percent more likely than those in noncombat roles to commit assaults or threaten violence after returning.

The problem was particularly striking among young men.

Of around 3,000 soldiers aged under 30, more than 20 percent had a conviction for violent offenses, compared with only 6.7 percent of civilian men in the same age group.

The study also highlights mental health problems in the military, and issues of alcohol abuse, post-traumatic stress disorder and aggressive behavior, the researchers say.

When somebody is sitting across the table looking at you, they’re thinking, “Can I stand this person every day?” That’s the picture in their head. It’s not a game or a dance — it’s just a talk.

The first salary negotiation isn’t as vital as you’d think.

A lot of people think that it’s really important to get the best salary you can going in. I don’t think that’s true. I think it’s important to get a commitment for them to pay you more if you add value going forward. The salary they’re paying you for is budgeted — but if you add a lot of value, people are much more willing to pay out of additional future revenues.

What will they pay you next year? People hardly ever ask that, and it’s a much better way to approach the negotiation.

Attitude is really important If you have a can-do attitude and you’re willing to work any time and anywhere, if you find solutions not problems, that’s what will get you the job. If someone has a lot of experience and bad attitude, I wouldn’t take them over a person with no experience and a great attitude.

It’s key to know what pictures they have in their heads.

Finding out the pictures in their head is the most important way to get more.

My first question to an employer is: “Why are you looking for somebody?” I want to know who they are and what’s in their head. I once applied [for a job] at Morgan Stanley. I said: What criteria do you

use to hire people? The interviewer replied, “What criteria should I use?” I listed all the things I was good at and she hired me! The more you know about the other party, the more you know what to do.

He stated, “Even if he convenes a great council of cardinals ... changes ... could still be a long way off.” One thing we must always remember is that the purpose of the Holy Father is to protect and teach the truth of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. The Gospel values can never change because they have been established by Christ.

Societal trends do not (and must not) dictate which moral persuasions the church accepts. The Roman Catholic Church is not a political machine that tries to make everyone happy and content, its purpose is to lead us to salvation. Why not write something positive and encouraging about the Catholic Church?

La Salle had already waited 21 years. So what was another 45 minutes?

In a tense room last night, one filled with players and coaches, the Explorers watched Villanova and Temple (and every other team in the country) learn their fate in the NCAA tournament.

Finally, La Salle saw its name in the field of 68 and the players erupted with a massive celebration. For the first time since 1992, the Explorers are headed to the Big Dance.

La Salle (21-9) will play No. 13 seed Boise St. (21-10) Wednesday (9:10 p.m.) in Dayton, Ohio. The winner will face No. 4 Kansas State in the West Region.

Since losing to Butler in the quarterfinals of the Atlantic 10 tournament, La Salle was forced to play the waiting game. This time, the wait was worth it. The Explorers are in.

“It was so hard waiting that I almost wanted to walk out of the room,” said guard Tyreek Duren. “I kind of had a headache because it was hard to watch

The NCAA menâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s basketball tournament field of 68 was announced yesterday and, for once, much of the snub controversy seemed subdued.

The four No. 1 seeds are Louisville (29-5), Kansas (29-5), Gonzaga (31-2) and Indiana (27-6).

The Cardinals are the top overall seed and landed in the Midwest region (Indianapolis), meaning they get to play the first few rounds in their own backyard. No. 4 Saint Louis (27-6, champions of the Atlantic-10), and No. 3 Michigan State (25-8), appear to pose the biggest challenge to Louisville making a return trip to the Final Four.

The Jayhawks were rewarded with arguably the toughest region (South), in terms of the other high seeds. Kansas begins in Kansas City and No. 2 Georgetown, No. 3 Florida, No. 4 Michigan and even No. 5 VCU all have the capability to reach the Final Four.
