City Council on Thursday passed legislation extending a firearms ban to all city-owned land, including municipal parks and recreation centers.

“What we’re looking to do ultimately is to find a way to make parks safer,” sponsor Councilwoman Cindy Bass said Thursday, calling the bill “one of the many steps we could take to make folks safer here.”

But the bill didn’t escape the vote without any “nays,” as Councilmen Brian O’Neill and David Oh both voted against it.

“The authority to create a statewide limitation on where guns can go and how they can be brought into certain locations is the authority of the state Legislature,” Oh said.

Still, the bill was crafted with Mayor Michael Nutter’s administration, and Nutter is expected to sign it into law.

“Since I’ve been on board as the chair of Parks and Recreation, I have been concerned about violence that we see in our recreation centers,” Bass said, ticking off several recent incidents.

“We need to make these places safer. I want to be able to send my child to my neighborhood recreation center and feel comfortable that my child is safe and that they’re in a good environment.”

She noted that weapons are already banned from municipal government buildings like City Hall, where council meets.

Man shot in head in Hunting Park A 47-year-old man remained in critical condition Thursday after he was shot in the head as he exited a car at 13th and West Butler streets in Hunting Park around midnight. No arrests have been made.

Police were dispatched just before 12:30 a.m. on a report of gunfire. The gunman pulled the trigger after he and the victim exchanged words, according to police.

We must create incentives for developers, businesses and residents to bring those properties back online so they are once again contributing to the community.”

Sharp said now is the perfect time for change.

“We think this is pretty timely with AVI and the tax issue — also the school issues,” he said.

Arrest made in St. Patrick's Day bomb-threat call Police have arrested an 18-year-old man for allegedly calling a bomb threat into Cabrini College on Saint Patrick’s Day. The Radnor Township Police Department took Daniel Bowden, 18, into custody Wednesday.

Bowden allegedly called a wall phone in the Woodcrest Hall dormitory hallway shortly after 9:45 p.m. March 17.

Police said two female students picked up and Bowden, disguising his voice, said there was a “bomb in the building.”

Police and the Radnor Fire Company, plus K-9 units from a multi-township task force, responded to the threat and cleared the building.

Bowden was arraigned Thursday and released on $5,000 unsecured bond.

In a showcase speech in Jerusalem to Israeli university students, Obama coupled his plea with an acknowledgement of the Jewish state’s security concerns in a region destabilized by the West’s nuclear standoff with Iran and civil war in Syria.

But he urged Israel’s younger generation to demand that their politicians take risks for peace in an address interrupted frequently by applause, including a standing ovation for the president during a brief outburst by a heckler. “You must create the change that you want to see,� he told his youthful audience.

In the company of

‘Admission’ Director: Paul Weitz Stars: Tina Fey, Paul Rudd Rating: PG-13 Grade: Admissions officer Tina Fey has worked at Princeton for 16 years and with professor/twit Michael Sheen for 10. She visits an idealistic alternative high school run by Paul Rudd, who says he’s figured out his freakishly bright student Nat Wolff is Fey’s kid, who she put up for adoption. As public awareness of student debt — as America’s next great financial crisis — grows, a movie about an Ivy League school in which money isn’t mentioned comes off tone-deaf.

There’s token jabs at unimaginative admissions processes which favor tidy, extracurricularpacked applications from heavily coached students, but no serious jabs.

Still, it’s nice to see a movie that trots out words like “autodidact” without apology and earnestly believes in the value of a liberal arts education, even if it’s not clear who’s hiring on the other side. VADIM RIZOV

aron Eckhart’s favorite actor is Cary Grant. Eckhart’s own career has veered all over the place: His breakthrough was playing a remorseless corporate sociopath in “In the Company of Men.” He’s played villains since, but even there lies diversity: a lovably amoral nicotine lobbyist in “Thank You For Smoking” and a tragic Two-Face in “The Dark Knight.” Elsewhere he’s played heroes (“Battle: Los Angeles”) and love interests (“Erin Brockovich”).

Now, in the new “Olympus Has Fallen,” he’s the president of the United States.

Yet Eckhart latches onto Cary Grant, an actor who, with a few exceptions, kept to a certain (peerless) shtick. “I always feel like he’s so good that he’s not regarded as an actor,” Eckhart explains.

modern actor to have. But there’s never been anybody like him.” Eckhart pines for a radically different era of screen acting.

“They had multiple partnerships: Cary Grant and Katharine Hepburn, Katharine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy. They got to know each other. So they were comfortable together. In movies today you don’t get to know the person you’re working with as well as you’d like.”

But today’s actors are judged by versatility, forever required to stretch their talents. “The most impor-

tant part about being an actor is being truthful. It really doesn’t matter what I play, even if it’s the president,” he says. “You want to do different things, too.

Eckhart has done his share of action movies, including “Olympus,” which is “Die Hard” in the White House. I don’t care if it’s a drama or a romantic comedy. You’re playing around.

“The main challenge of being an actor is to be multidimensional, to be a whole person. Whether you’re the protagonist or the antagonist, you still have a life. You still have parents. You still have to put gas in the car. If audiences believe that, then they’ll get past the fact that he’s cutting people into little pieces. They’ll start going back to the history and ask why he’s cutting people up. And that’s when you’re more fulfilled as an audience member. A villain can laugh as well as cry. A villain can be tender and compassionate.”

Of course, there’s also the fear of being typecast.

Early in his career Eckhart voiced concern about relentless villain roles. “I’m still conscious of that.

When you’re playing the villain where you’re sort of trying to take down something, it’s not so interesting.” Typecasting isn’t always bad: Cary Grant got to play charming men of refinement. Villains can be less fun. “Being a villain, you have to deal with so many hard-core emotional issues. You spend a lot of time reading the diary of Jeffrey Dahmer and stuff like that. And it gets old after awhile. Basically you’re hanging out with a bunch of s—heads.”

White House down (before ‘White House Down’)

First of two ‘Die Hard’-meets-White House action pics out this year is an enjoyable mess But Gerard Butler is certainly no Bruce Willis In “Olympus Has Fallen,” the president (Aaron Eckhart) is kidnapped by terrorists and only a secret service agent (Gerard Butler) can save the day — and America, and the world. As it happens, that’s also the plot of “White House Down,” due out in June. Hollywood is a welloiled machine, but it sporadically force-feeds us the same thing twice. For example, 1998 infamously, saw dueling killer asteroid pics (“Deep Impact,” “Armageddon”) and two animated films about bugs (“Antz,” “A Bug’s Life”).

As ever, it would’ve been ideal had the two productions pooled their resources. “Down” has Channing Tatum as our Bruce Willis-y hero and Jamie Foxx as the president. But it also has director Roland Emmerich (“Independence Day”).

Butler is no Tatum, but “Olympus” also boasts Morgan Freeman, Angela Bassett and even Melissa Leo. At least it’s not bloated.

Emmerich is a tiresome supersizer. “Fallen” director Antoine Fuqua (“Training Day”) is tough and good with actors. The screenplay is old school in the way it dreams up almostplausible ways to keep its plot going, and smart enough to quickly fix developments it never should have made (like briefly saddling Butler with a kid). After a gory, brutal siege, Butler finds himself roaming the White House, dispatching baddies who are part of a moneyed rogue North Korean terrorist organization. As with last year’s “Red Dawn” remake, those from an impoverished nation raised enough cash to fund a pricey assault on

the world’s mightiest superpower.

Their invading one of the world’s most impregnable fortresses yields the requisite sporadic “America, f— yeah!” fistpumps and superimposed shots of Old Glory, even though our hero is a Scotsman. Butler is a man’s man asskicker fixed with a lame motivational backstory: He was unable to save the first lady (Ashley Judd) during an accident. But he’s a humorless brute and certainly no Bruce Willis, particularly when he tries to be. To its credit, the film wisely cuts away from him to the War Room, with Freeman and Bassett and to the president’s bunker, where Leo proves her Oscar mettle by getting beaten-up and undressed while shrieking the Pledge of Allegiance.

It’s a diverting mess that would have been less entertaining if it had been more competent.

dmission is a romantic comedy, not an action movie, so it comes as something of a surprise that one of its stars wanted to advertise their physique with a scene in which they chop wood bare-chested in the forest. Even more surprising? That star was comedy legend Lily Tomlin. “I wanted to be in the woods chopping wood with my shirt off,” Tomlin reveals about her character, a septuagenarian feminist whose adult life has been devoted to activism. “The character has a double mastectomy, and I think, I’ll get a breastplate made like I’ve had a double mastectomy and I’ll tattoo it to show another expression of her empowerment and how she’s completely at ease with herself and accepts her female body.”

Unfortunately, the actress landed the role too late to be able to follow through on her plan. But even without the requisite hardware, she wanted to bare her body onscreen.

She reached into her own experiences in order to bare her character’s soul.

“I am a feminist, and I lived in those days of the movement,” Tomlin explains. “And I know what it is as a human [to believe] in a certain philosophy or some doctrine — and you do not want to betray it.”

As Susannah, Tomlin plays the mother of Tina Fey’s Princeton admissions officer, Portia, who’s fumbling her way through a romance with an alternative high school principal (Paul Rudd) while simultaneously dealing with the revelation that an applicant just might be her long-lost son. The 73-yearold actress says that she loved the parallels she saw between mother and daughter, particularly since like her daughter’s long-concealed pregnancy,

“My character got pregnant from having sex with a guy she’s attracted to on the train, but she doesn’t want to admit that she was so attracted to this guy that she was vulnerable to him,” Tomlin observes. “So she creates that mythology

that she chose him and she was empowered enough to decide when she was going to have a child and who she was going to have it with. And then that mythology isolates her from her daughter most of all.”

omlin especially liked that the film possessed so many layers while still managing to deliver on a visceral level. “Aside from the feminist aspect, it’s just a human story about people not being their authentic selves,” she says. “Every one of us was living some kind of inauthenticity.”

“The metaphor of admission, in the course of the movie we all have an admission,” she says, punctuating the film’s title. “I love the slug line: ‘Let someone in.’”

A family of cavepeople struggles to survive in “The Croods.”

Not that stoopid

Nicolas Cage-led prehistoric toon ‘The Croods’ hits you over the head with its homilies but is sporadically loopily funny and beautiful The takeaway lesson from this caveman toon is one about not being afraid to be curious and take chances. If this advice eludes you, you must have been sleeping, as it’s everywhere: in the very plot — about a family of prehistoric Neanderthals forced to abandon their dank but safe cave home during a series of earthquakes — and in every tenth line of dialogue.

Emma Stone gives voice to a restless teen in a family that speaks in an anachronistically modern vernacular, even though they still have names like “Grug” and “Ugga.” Stone’s Eep happens upon an advanced guy named Guy (Ryan Reynolds), whose superior intellect proves useful when they’re forced to relocate — much to the consternation of their noble but wildly overprotec-

tive dad (Nicolas Cage).

Although John Cleese has a story credit (but not a screenwriting one), it’s impossible to detect the former Monty Pythoner — much less the author of “A Fish Called Wanda” — anywhere in this familyfriendly chase movie with homilies. Did Cleese submit a much crazier script, only for it to be declawed in the pre-production process? Almost certainly.

But when it’s not needlessly underlining and italicizing and putting in bold its token message, “The Croods” is often surprisingly loopy, even beautiful.

As our family travela to new locales, the animators let loose their imagination.

Bizarre animals and fauna abound, from flying, hotred piranha that descend upon and whittle down animals to the bone, and flowers with tongues.

At its best, which isn’t often enough, “The Croods” comes closer than any recent animated film to the freewheeling invention of classic mainstream animation. When it’s not crazy, it’s at least gorgeous, with photorealistic vistas — willed into life in part by the Coen Brothers’ usual cinematographer, Roger Deakins, billed (as he was on “WALL-E”) as a “visual consultant.”

The rest is merely more amusing/entertaining than it should be, with brief passages of inspiration peppered about the pat lessons about courage. Even the oft-bored Cage is appropriately jazzed as a father who means well but, like the film itself, keeps clubbing people over the head with a message.

A boozy beach romp awaits in ‘Spring Breakers’

Harmony Korine’s (sort of) mainstream film dirties up former squeaky-clean tween stars

The Spring Breakers of the title — religious Faith (Selena Gomez), plus bad girls Brit (Ashley Benson), Candy (Vanessa Hudgens) and Cotty (Rachel Korine) — are bored at the start of Harmony Korine’s superstylized exploitation drama. Despondent with their flat-looking campus and wanting to see “something new,” they rob a Chicken Shack, then head to Florida for drugs and demonstrative hedonism.

Party montages ensue, and during a cocaineheavy afternoon the cops show up. Up to this point, “Spring Breakers” keeps a

straight face, giving sexminded viewers what they came for: copious anonymous toplessness and young women giving pornminded frat boys what they expect.

When the MTV-plusboobs good times end, Faith et al. are bailed out by aspiring rapper/drug lord/freelance ruffian Alien (James Franco).

Reveling in his money, his platinum grille and a TV with a constant loop of “Scarface,” he’s a self-proclaimed “gangsta” with enough guns for his own final Pacino-esque shootout. He’s a goofy, in-

spired comic creation burdened with the responsibility of spelling out Korine’s themes. “This is America,” Alien explains.

“This is the American dream.”

That dream has to inevitably reveal itself a nightmare, presumably darkening and curdling the earlier T&A. The girls and Alien share a communal narration track, an unabashed nod to Terrence Malick, whose 1974 debut “Badlands” similarly gives Sissy Spacek an uncomprehending, flat voiceover over a murderous summer spree. The girls are vapid,

bad commentators on their own story, manically fixated on partying and singing Britney Spears.

Repetitively nihilistic, it’s a movie making predictable visual poetry — jacked-up neon lights at night, drugged-out partiers reaching transcendence through exhaustion — out of girls whose only aspira-

tions for transcendence go no further than the worst week in Florida. That’s sad, but Korine’s beautiful losers are interchangeable, and his clunky third-act exposition punctures any ambitions for a deathcharged dream reverie.

There is no one onscreen today more excessively earnest than Jim Sturgess, particularly when he’s suppressing his British accent for a bland American one.

In the opening narration of the English-language European production “Upside Down,” he’s forced to power through the ridiculous premise, which is the kind that probably sounded simple in theory but requires tedious explication in practice. Sturgess’ moony-eyed dreamer, Adam, lives on a planet with “double gravity,” with one society literally living on top of the other, facing each other like polar opposites.

cret of the pink bees,” credibility evaporates.

Not that you’ll ever truly be lost in this bizarro-world, which is evidently the size of a snow globe — with storytelling about as ambitious. Adam is in love not with Eve, but Eden (Kirsten Dunst), a

pretty girl from the world above. Like all those on his half, he’s poor — and she, like her half, is filthy rich.

As youths, they would meet at adjacent mountain peaks to make out and eat jam. She conveniently loses her memory, but Adam never gives up the

flame and hatches a plan to reunite, using Mr. Heavyfoot boots and several tons of pluck.

The pricey “Upside Down” has a number of handsome images, one of them an all-white office (in a skyscraper that joins the two worlds) with endless

rows of cubicles on both top and bottom. It’s a vision of mega-bureaucracy to rival the ones in “The Apartment,” “Brazil” and Orson Welles’ “The Trial.”

Sure enough, director Juan Solanas comes back to it again and again, and again and again and again, perhaps because he has nothing close to its power and, more important, wit.

“Upside Down” boasts a slender romance storyline its makers likely mistook for simplicity, but all it engenders in the viewer is the feeling of getting gypped. A Bronx tale told by a Frenchman

Director Michel Gondry on working with high-schoolers from the Bronx on his new film ‘The We and the I’ He also speaks of the benefits of making an American film as a foreigner

ichel Gondry has directed famous movie stars (Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet in “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind”) and musicians (the White Stripes, Kanye West). His latest film — his first since “The Green Hornet” — boasts no one you’ve heard of. “The We and the I,” out now, is the result of a four-year process with teens from an after-school arts program in the Bronx. Two years were spent in workshops pounding a narrative together, and the result is a raucous comedy

about high schoolers on one seriously long bus ride home.

The actual shooting of this film was so delayed that, by the time it began, some of the cast was no longer in high school. Was that strange for them?

Some of the cast [members] were embarrassed to play the story they had experienced two yeas ago.

The workshop lasted two years, so they’d grown and changed. Every time the film was delayed, we were worried they were going to grow out of the story. One of the kids, one of the bul-

Q&A How did you gain these kids’ trust?

Sometimes it helps to be a foreigner. People would not rely on stereotypes. In general, I get curious with people. I don’t try to talk too much. It’s very obnoxious, people who speak more than they listen.

When you apply this as a director, if you don’t talk constantly, and you listen, then people give you more trust.

lies, had become much taller. He had to drop out.

Given the length of the workshop, it seems like the film is really bigger than just the film itself.

For me, the workshop was equal to the film. I told them I didn’t know if we would ever get to shoot it, but we would still have a great experience together.

We were all committed to the project. I remember the day before shooting began, one of the producers teared up. It was the beginning of the end of our time together.

How do you tend to interact with your actors?

Michel Gondry is the director of the new film “The We and the I.”

One thing I’m trying to achieve when I make a movie is to make sure I live amongst [my cast]. I like exchange. I like shooting people like we are one family, the way I used to shoot my brother with my dad’s camera. I like to reproduce this feeling.

Sometimes filmmaking can become a sort of ritual.

My idea is to try and break people of rituals, to get them to behave in a certain loose way.

What are some of your tricks for getting actors to loosen up?

the camera roll and let the actors talk about their exes, about what happened. Then with them in that frame of mind, I would ask them to say their lines, with the same tone of voice, the same emotion. I practiced [working with actors] over the years. I like to ask them weird questions. Like with the kids, I would ask them — this is a joke — “Who do you prefer: your dad or your mom?” It would loosen them up and get the right emotion.

Michel Gondry’s latest is a collaboration with rowdy but lovable Bronx high schoolers Ang Lee just won a Best Director Oscar for shooting most of a film in and around a small boat.

Michel Gondry (“Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind�) goes one step further: A few moments on the street and a handful of Gondry-esque fantasies aside, his latest, the collaborative “The We and the I,� never leaves the inside of a city bus that takes high schoolers from one side of the Bronx to the other. In real life, this ride takes less time than a feature-length movie. But the film, like most of Gondry’s, exists in

an absurdist version of reality, albeit one with a second foot firmly in reality.

Gondry created the film over four years with high schoolers enrolled in an after-school arts program.

They play “themselves,� which is to say heightened versions of their slightly younger selves (some were already in college by the time the funds were secured to shoot). Set after the last day of school, “The We and the I� piles them on a bus, which they immediately make their temporary home. A series of plotless hangout sessions

that resemble, in their childlike, practical special effects, the director’s storied, playful music videos.

It’s one strain of energy fused with another. The kids are rambunctious, even blue, while Gondry — nearly 50 but eternally childlike — brings his own, splicing in Young MC and his usual makeshift contraptions with today’s youth and cell-phone apps.

This is the Frenchman’s fourth New York City-area

movie — including “Dave Chappelle’s Block Party� and the Passaiac-set “Be Kind Rewind� — and he has a way of bottling up the city’s polyglot energy with an ever-curious set of eyes.

As with all of Gondry’s work, there’s a melancholy buried in the whimsy and anarchism. It’s a touch too pronounced, with the film going from freewheeling, free-form fun, fueled by energy and

filmmaking as fast as its chatter, to a sad, sober, talky conclusion. There are ways to delve into character depth without ruining the fun, as “The We and the I� very nearly does.

Although, like the characters — or more specifically, actors — the film is too lovable to engender anything approaching disappointment.

n 1998, Taiwaneseborn choreographer Kun-Yang Lin visited Borobudur, the ninthcentury Buddhist temple in Java, Indonesia, formed by intricately decorated circular platforms built upon a square base. “I was fascinated by the simplicity on the top but the detail within,” Lin says. “I wanted to explore that, to start architecturally but get to the meaning inside.”

It took more than a decade for that inspiration to bear fruit, but this weekend Kun-Yang Lin/Dancers will premiere “One: Gifts From Afar.” The program includes the world premiere of “One: Immortal Game,” which explores the competitive drive in human nature via the game of chess — an echo of the temple’s square foundation — and “Mandala Project,” which premiered in 2011 and explores the form of the mandala, the Sanskrit word for circle.

“In Chinese culture we use the circle as a metaphor for life, for compassion, for generosity," Lin says. "The square relates to morals, integrity and structure. That’s how

the Buddhist temple is built, with structure and simplicity. You begin with the structure and then let the structure go. As a dancer, it’s a similar situation when we train for almost a year, then allow ourselves to digest that and let it go.”

“One: Immortal Game” was developed during last year’s presidential race, and as philosophical and spiritual an artist as Lin is, he couldn’t help but be influenced by the daily headlines. “I don’t want to talk about politics,” Lin insists, “but how do I respond to them as an artist? I can’t articulate with words what I can with my dance, so I have to figure out my own way to respond and to reflect.”

The London Olympics’ dueling messages of unity and competitiveness led Lin to the inspiration of chess. “Chess throughout history has been very political,” Lin says. “I wanted to bring that concept into a sense of oneness, because oneness is the secret of everything.”

sounds a little different this time, that’s because she is. The punky pop “Girl Talk” was fueled by a breakup and, well, girl power: her all-girl band and some good-listening gal pals.

“Women connect with each other on an emotional level in a really big way,” Nash says. “That was a really important thing for me over the last year, what with all the personal things I was going through.”

She uses the phrase “going through” in reference to the breakup.“The record itself is basically purging for me.”

Kate Nash has also revamped her style a bit, with the key component of that word being “vamp.” She says she’s not trying to be somebody she isn’t, though.

Lisa Loeb has decided to ‘Stay’ The singer is happy to wax nostalgic about the 1990s She talks about her new album and why life is better than fairy tales

ith that allAmerican smile and those sexy secretary glasses, Lisa Loeb still looks like the smart, cute girl who burst onto the music scene almost two decades ago with her hit song “Stay (I Missed You).� Loeb’s winter-released seventh album “No Fairy Tale� finds her reminiscing on a song called “The ’90s.� “I’m very nostalgic about the ’90s,� says Loeb. “Chad Gilbert, who co-produced and instigated this project, wanted me to write [the] song. At first, I was hesitant because I didn’t want to write something that was kitschy and cute. Then when I started thinking about it, the ’90s was particularly exciting because that’s when I started to become successful as a musician.�

Loeb also used the song to correct a misconception that pigeonholed her as a solo folky-pop singer-songwriter. “I decided to write about making my video for ‘Stay,’� she says. “That kick-started the commercial side of my career, but I didn’t get to play with my band. The video was really cool. Ethan Hawke directed it, and Ethan’s vision for a one-take video was much stronger than me getting to show everybody my rock band. For years, I always felt I had to prove myself: ‘I play with a band, I’m not just a solo singer

who walks around my studio apartment. I’m not a folk singer, I’m a lot of other things.’� “No Fairy Tale� is very much a collaborative album. Loeb produced it with Gilbert (of New Found Glory), and guests include Tegan and Sara, Hello Goodbye and Morgan Taylor. Despite the girly title, Loeb says the album has a serious side. “It really means that life is better than a fairy tale,� Loeb says. “Living the ups and downs of life is richer than the ‘perfect’ life that people associate with fairy tales on a surface level of princes and princesses. Life is supposed to be better than that. �

You disappeared there,’� she says. “I’m like, ‘Actually, I was just in San Francisco playing with my band, and then the year before that I was there for a kids’ book festival’ — the list goes on and on.�

But, she adds, “I don’t take things as personally as I used to. I remember I was being interviewed in Amsterdam or Austria and somebody was like, ‘What have you been doing?’ I’m like, ‘I just put a record out, that’s why I’m here. Do you know what it takes to put a record out and tour the world?’ It used to be annoying, but now I just don’t waste time being annoyed by it.�

Dolphin Tavern gets a (slight) makeover

Dolphin Tavern is back in business with a shiny new sign outside. The narrow dive bar on Broad and Tasker reopened on Wednesday under new management, with Dave P from Making Time, Sean Agnew from R5 Productions, Psydde Delicious from Delicious Boutique and both Avram Hornik and Mark Fichera from Four Corners Management now at the

Four Corners is responsible for plenty of Philly nightlife already. The group runs all three Drinkers locations, the revamped Ortlieb’s, summer staple Morgan’s Pier and music venue Union Transfer, among others.

One opening-night patron, who had heard of the old Dolphin’s reputation but had never been inside, remarked that it was

“trashy, but not as trashy as I was hoping,” adding, with a hint of disappointment, that it was cleaner than he expected — though others might take that as a good thing. The consensus among a few drinkers was that if the new owners were going for the hipster crowd at Dolphin, they definitely hit their mark, with blackframe glasses, ski hats and tattoos as far as the eye

Chef Jerry Donohue defines good barbecue Hot Chef

t doesn’t take long to realize that Jerry Donohue is fiercely dedicated to his work.

He runs the kitchen at the Bella Vista joint Growlers, which opened last October, a gig that prompted his move into the city from the Main Line and forced him to place his barbecue-competing pastime on the back burner. But he’s not complaining. Instead, Donohue is busy working on a barbecue-heavy spring and summer menu. This way we all benefit.

What’s your neighborhood now that you live in the city?

I’m in Passyunk Square area. I moved there two weeks after Growlers opened.

I usually go to P.O.P.E. or Lucky 13, although my regular spot is Jose Pistola’s.

I’ve met a lot of cool industry people hanging out over there. And one of the bartenders is a good friend of mine. We actually first met at Folk Fest, and eventually he introduced me to the owner of Growlers.

How do you like working there?

I love it. It’s unique to any place I’ve worked before. I mean, I don’t call it “staff meal” here, I call it “family meal.” We got a great little thing going here where there isn’t a division between front-of-house and

Make the stuffing. Clean the livers (see page nine), then coarsely chop them into half inch pieces. Heat the oil in a large saute pan over medium heat. Add the onions, celery, and garlic, cook for two minutes; lower the heat to medium-low and continue to cook until the vegetables are translucent and begin to soften — six to eight minutes. Add the livers, sage, salt, and pepper; saute until the livers are cooked — about five minutes. Transfer the mixture to a paper towellined plate to drain. Clean the hens. Trim any excess fat from the hens; wash them under cold water and pat dry with paper towels. Set aside.

Mix a mirepoix. Mix the carrots, celery, and onions in the bottom of a roasting pan large enough to hold all four hens.

Stuff the hens. Preheat the oven to 400°F. Loosely fill the cavity of each hen with stuffing. Drizzle one and a half teaspoons oil over each hen and rub into skin.

Sprinkle each hen with salt and pepper. Truss the hens with twine (tie the legs together, tuck the wings under the backs). Place the hens, breast up, in the roasting pan, on the mirepoix.

Dot each with the butter, dividing equally. (If there is extra stuffing, place it in an appropriate size casserole or ramekin; add it to the oven with the hens about halfway through the roasting time.)

hirty-three years is a long time, especially for a rock ‘n’ roll band. Most record a few albums before disintegrating in a cloud of acrimony or falling into the realm of irrelevance while becoming a nostalgia act.

Not Bad Religion. The music veterans have weathered lineup changes, hiatuses, major labels and mainstream recognition to forge a sound that builds upon hard-core while adding doses of pop, heavy metal and psychedelia to their insightful and socially conscious lyrics.

You’ve been playing some of the new songs live already. How have they been going over?

People have been really seeming to respond to these songs. When you have a band with our history, it’s nice to be able to play new stuff and have it still be relevant to the audience, instead of them pacing themselves, waiting to hear “No Control.�

Q&A How has punk rock influenced your politics and life?

Punk rock taught me to question, to not take what I’m given at face value. As a kid, you look at what’s directly affecting you now — just interpersonal relationships, the growing pains and understanding how the world works. As you mature, I think the punk element that remains is not to just accept the status quo. [It] evokes a curiosity about the way the world works.

The end product has been described as such, but I think it’s important to point out that there’s never any conception, any preconceived idea, about what a Bad Religion record is going to be. ‌ The lyrical aggression on this record is what begat the tempos of the short songs.

Do you think that’s why you’ve maintained relevance over the years?

It’s songwriting. The consistency of Brett [Gurewitz] and Greg [Graffin]’s writing throughout the years is what keeps us out of that heritage aspect. ‌ You can really tell in our performance and our recordings that this has never been a band to sorta

Is it true that “True North� is a harkening back to your late ’80s albums in song style?

How has punk rock changed over the years?

My overview is that it went from something deeply underground that has now basically blown

up into a musical genre that has every bit the relevance and importance of jazz or outlaw. It’s like, I just don’t know. Punk’s different now. I’m 48 years old. What do I know? I don’t know what kids do.

Well, they come to your shows.

Yeah, but that’s a musical aspect. That’s what I’m versed in. ‌ Playing guitar has exactly the same physical rush and emotional intensity it did when I was 15 years old. ‌ I just get an incredible kick out of it.

It’s something I would do if no one came to watch.

Letters Subway readers just crazy about Metro I am so very sick and tired of all of the people on the subway that feel as though it’s a life or death situation if they don’t read Metro before they get to their destination.

The subway is always packed in the morning and everyone trying to turn pages (while the paper gets much too close in my personal space) is going to eventually cause a serious problem!

I have asked several people nicely and not so nicely to move the paper out of my face and it just seems as though they are oblivious to the people in their surroundings.

There was a time when people just sat on the subway and enjoyed the ride, but because everyone acts like robots and does what they see everyone else doing we now have this issue.

On Jan. 23, Penn State women’s basketball player Maggie Lucas wrote a blog post on ESPNW titled “The Narberth courts are my favorite in the world.”

In the post, she explained how every summer she’d take to the famous courts of her childhood and shoot around until the lights went off. She respects the legends that took to the court before her, names like Wilt Chamberlain and Kobe Bryant.

Lucas even had the opportunity to shoot around with Bryant one summer in what she called “one of her favorite basketball memories ever.”

But Lucas’ own star is rising after being named Big Ten Player of the Year.

Maybe it’s time to add her to that list of legends.

“It feels really good,” Lucas said about receiving the award. “It’s just a testament to my team and my coaches. They put me in a great position to succeed and it's definitely an award that I share with all of them. It’s something that wouldn’t have been accomplished without every-

“I can remember on snowy days when we couldn’t shoot outside or when our gym was closed, my dad and I would drive all over to find a gym that might be open just so we could get a few shots up,” she wrote on her ESPNW blog. METRO

Outside of her teammates and coaches, Lucas attributes a lot of her success to her Philly roots.

On Sunday, No. 3 Penn State faces No. 14 Cal Poly in the first round of the NCAA tournament. Lucas thinks her coach, Coquese Washington, has the team ready to go.

“She’s just been challenging us to get better,” said Lucas. “We’re aware that the tournament is all about matchups, and she’s preparing us for that. We’re just taking things extra seriously at practice and are excited to get things started.”

The total amount of federal and state funds to be received in Fiscal Year 2014 will be determined at the completion of the federal and state budget processes.

SEPTA proposes to submit to its funding agencies a program of projects for funding consideration. SEPTA’s final federal Section 5307 Program of Projects will be made available through the Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission’s Transportation Improvement Program (TIP) and in conjunction with the DVRPC’s Public Involvement Process for the TIP. II. At the hearings, SEPTA will afford an opportunity for interested persons or agencies to be heard with respect to the social, economic and environmental aspects of the projects. Interested persons may submit orally, or in writing, evidence and recommendations. Speakers for the morning and evening sessions must register by 12:30 PM and 5:30 PM, respectively, on the day of the Public Hearings.

III. Persons wishing to file written comments may forward them to the Office of the General Manager, 10th Floor, 1234 Market Street, Philadelphia, PA 19107-3780. Comments must be received by April 29, 2013, so that they may be forwarded to the Hearing Examiner. Comments may also be sent via email to capbudget@septa.org.
