As a prosecutor told a judge how an Everett man allegedly stabbed a Newbury Street salon stylist eight times and then left him under an interstate ramp, the accused nodded his head up and down before burying his head in his hands.

Christopher Powell, 39, of Everett, was ordered held without bail during his arraignment for murder. Powell was arrested Tuesday, about a month after a passerby discovered the body of 44-year-old Corey Thompson on a gravelly plot of land under an Interstate 93 ramp

near Albany Street.

Assistant District Attorney Edmond Zabin said the two men got into a fight during which Thompson punched and assaulted Powell. The fight was captured on video surveillance.

As Zabin told the judge that at some point Powell pulled a knife and stabbed Thompson eight times in the torso, Powell nodded his head and mouthed “I love you” to his mother and

girlfriend who attended the hearing.

According to court documents, video surveillance from a nearby apartment building showed Thompson in a verbal and physical fight with Powell. Troopers investigating the incident interviewed three witnesses who said they saw the two running near Harrison Avenue and William Mullins Way at about 5 a.m. Feb. 25. Brain drain. Officials want to keep local talent It’s no secret that Boston and Cambridge are home to some of the world’s most elite colleges and universities, an attribute that attracts thousands of students each year.

Sounds great, but there’s a downside — half of them earn their degree, then exit to the left.

That’s why coalition of city and educational leaders are holding a Mass. Talent Retention public hearing tonight on how to convince local talent to stay put. “We want to make sure that we keep the young, vibrant talent here,� said Boston City Councillor Tito Jackson, who is spearheading the push to stop what is known as brain drain. “The paradox of being a hub is that it is something that everyone goes to, but also something that everyone leaves.�

The release of the records comes just over four months after Jared Lee Loughner, 24, a college dropout with a history of psychiatric problems, was sentenced to

Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy, a potential swing vote, warned of the “risks” that the Defense of Marriage Act infringes upon the traditional role of the states in defining marriage.

The 1996 U.S. law denies married same-sex couples access to federal benefits by defining marriage as between a man and a woman.

Kennedy referred to DOMA as “inconsistent” because it purports to give authority to the states to define marriage while limiting recognition of those determinations.

On the liberal side of the bench, Justice Sonia Sotomayor and Justice Elena Kagan echoed some of Kennedy’s concerns about the states’ rights issue.

“What gives the federal government the right to be concerned at all about the definition of marriage?” Sotomayor said. Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg also raised

concerns about the law, stressing how important federal recognition is to any person who is legally married. Comparing marriage status with types of milk, Ginsburg said that a gay marriage endorsed by a state, but not recognized by the federal government, could be viewed as the equivalent of “skim milk.”

The law is the focus of a second day of oral arguments before the high court. It is possible the court would not reach the wider issue in the DOMA case because of preliminary legal matters relating to whether the court can hear it.

On that issue, conservative justices criticized the decision by President Obama to abandon the defense of DOMA and question his willingness to defend other laws passed

The biggest cyber attack in history is slowing Internet speeds around the world as hackers take on spam-fighting group Spamhaus. Netflix is among the sites severely affected.

Spamhaus claims to have been under attack for a week, following a decision to flag the Cyberbunker site as hosting spam. Spamhaus CEO Steve Linford said the Distributed Denial of Service attacks are unprecedented. “Attacks are peaking at 300 gigabytes per second. … Attacks against major banks, we’re talking about 50,” he said, adding this was enough to disable government networks.

Film. The screenwriters of “Olympus Has Fallen” talk about getting too close to the truth and discovering strange but true factoids about the White House.

“We don’t think anything like this could ever happen,” Creighton Rothenberger says with a smile. In his film, “Olympus Has Fallen,” which he co-wrote with his wife Katrin Benedikt, terrorists break into the White House, wipe out the

Secret Service team and kidnap the president. But is this really so implausible?

In the film, Gerard Butler stars as the lone surviving Secret Service agent after the massacre and the only one who can save the day. Rothenberger and Benedikt acknowledge the obvious “‘Die Hard’ in the White House” line, and insist they were trying to one-up that film’s corporate skyscraper setting. “The kernel of the idea was what would be the most impossible building to take over in the world? And we said the White House. But how would you take it over?”

seeks revenge against a nation that has helped keep his country apart. “We wanted a villain whose mind-set was that he was in the right,” Rothenberger explains. “He thought he had a reason to lash out against the United States. He thinks he is the hero. But you have to stop him because, you know, we disagree.”

Rothenberger says that director Antoine Fuqua (“Training Day”) aimed to keep it “real” and “gritty.” But not too real. “When you see an action movie, obviously you suspend belief a little bit,” says Benedikt. “But you don’t want to be suspending belief every other minute. That takes you out of the movie. But I think you can

get away with one or two [logic lapses].”

Actually, the two had to avoid certain things they discovered through research because they might sound too outlandish. “We learned that when a motorcade [from another country] comes into the White House driveway, they can’t question those guys,” explains Rothenberger. “They can’t go into their vehicles. They could have guns inside, yet because of diplomatic protocol you can’t check them out. We didn’t put that in there because no one’s going to buy that.”

I am often asked, “Is there such a thing as a happy marriage these days?” Patients come in to see me and talk about all the failed relationships around them. They’re frustrated and fearful of marriage as a result. People’s attitudes seem to be, “Every marriage fails eventually, so what’s the point?” This has a profound impact on their ability to even have a healthy relationship.

Their questions are rooted in fear of the unknown. People don’t know exactly how marriage will turn out when they enter it, so they get anxious. There are things you can do to ensure a healthy relationship, even through differences and difficulties.

These are my tried-and-tested tips to become fearlessly married: Define a healthy marriage. If you wanted to open a coffee shop, would you model it after the dingy one on the corner or the thriving Star-

bucks? Rather than focusing on botched relationships, look at what works.

Enter the marriage 100 percent committed, without the divorce option. In relationships that stand the test of time, couples are entirely focused on keeping it and doing what’s necessary to maintain it.

and don’t mean the end of a relationship. Look at the big picture and ask yourself: Is it worth it to win the battle but lose the war? Accept certain things about your partner.

Sure, it may annoy you that he leaves the toilet seat up, but in the end, does it really matter?

Focus on what binds you, not on what separates you.

You originally got together because of commonalities, not differences. Keep that focus while maintaining a sense of autonomy. The best relationships are those where both people do their thing and then come together and enjoy.

Take time out when there are arguments or fights.

Issues are rarely resolved in the heat of battle, so walk away and agree to come together when things calm down. Examine your intent. Is it to hurt the other person or work toward a compromise?

Avoid absolute words such as “always” or “never,” as they seldom lead to a constructive conversation.

Plan a date night, e.g. movies, dinner. Have it in place early in the week so you can look forward to it.

SURE, PATRON’S A WATERING HOLE — BUT ONE WITH SOME SOPHISTICATED TEQUILA We’ve been hearing about the development of Patron’s Mexican Kitchen and Watering Hole for a few months now, as owner Marc Kadish has gradually transformed the former Big City pool hall into a new Mexican and tequila bar concept. If you expected a classier update on the frat-y Allston bar in line with many of the other recent, flashy tequila-centric bar openings, you’d be half right.

The back room has been remodeled into a much more attractive dining room: leather banquettes and two fire places provide a relaxed feel, with ornate mirrors, old clocks and art adorning the walls. A few pool tables remain, however, taking up the right side of the secondstory space. The bar pushing outward from the center toward that side remains largely the same, which is to say: Allston-y.

Despite the conceptual focus on tequilas now, there is still a Jagermeister shot machine behind the bar, and an encouragement to ask about tequila Jell-O shots on the menu under the list of mezcals.

The existence of that list is encouraging all the same, ranging from approachable and popular mezcals, like the Monte Alban silver — lightly smoky, slightly astringent,

MLB values surge Major League Baseball teams are making money hand over fist, but not because of rising attendance or any other typical reasons. According to Forbes, money that all teams made from the 2006 sale of the Montreal Expos was invested in hedge funds and is now worth more than $1 billion.

Can the Red Sox exceed their relatively low expectations? Are the Yankees finally dead? Will the revamped Blue Jays be able to make the postseason for the first time since the early 1990s? Was the Orioles’ 2012 season just a fluke?

METRO’S AL EAST PREDICTIONS Who will take the AL East?

For the first time in a long time the division is anyone’s for the taking, and the usual favorites, the Red Sox and Yankees, are being picked to finish at the bottom by many experts.

Here are Metro Boston’s AL East predictions for the 2013 season: Tampa Bay Rays: 90-72, The Rays didn’t make any big splashes this offseason, but it’s not like they needed to.

They have arguably the best pitching staff in the entire American League in David Price, Jeremy Hellickson, and Matt Moore as well as Fernando Rodney in their bullpen. In what could be the most competitive AL East in recent memory, solid pitching should guide the Rays to the top of the standings.

Boston Red Sox: 87-75 Many people have already written off the Red Sox, a team coming off of a 69-93 sea-

son and a last place finish in the division. But 2013 is a new year. The team still has a great deal of talent on the roster in Jacoby Ellsbury, Dustin Pedroia and Will Middlebrooks.

The Red Sox also signed Mike Napoli, Jonny Gomes and Shane Victorino this offseason, who bring plenty of leadership to what was thought to be a temperamental clubhouse.

As is the key with most teams, the success of the Sox will depend on their starting pitching.

The staff was dreadful in 2012, finishing second to last in the AL in both wins and ERA, but certainly has the talent to lead the team to a playoff spot. Jon Lester and Clay Buchholz have proven in the past what they are capable of.

New York Yankees: 82-80 These Yankees are already behind the eight ball with a number of injuries before the season has even begun. Derek

Mark Buehrle and Jose Reyes were added from a trade with Miami and the team also signed starter R.A. Dickey. On paper the Blue Jays may be the best team in the division, and will surely improve on their 73-89 season last year, but not by much. It’s rare that a baseball team turns things around completely in just one year.

Jose Reyes and the Blue Jays are a hot pick in the AL East.

Jeter is hobbled and won’t play Opening Day. A strained right wrist will keep first baseman Mark Teixeira out for at least the month of April -— same goes for outfielder Curtis Granderson who has a fractured right forearm. Even worse is Alex Rodriguez who will be out until July at the earliest as he comes off of hip surgery. The Yankees starting rotation isn’t the same dominant group as in the

past. CC Sabathia is coming off of a season where he made just 28 starts, his fewest since 2006. Hiroki Kuroda had a solid 2012, but he is 38 years old — and many questions surround the rest of the staff in Andy Pettitte, Phil Hughes and Michael Pineda.

Toronto Blue Jays: 81-81 No team in the division made as many moves this offseason as the Blue Jays. Josh Johnson,

Baltimore Orioles: 78-84 Coming off one of the biggest turnarounds in recent memory and making the playoffs for the first time since 1997 last season, it could just be a “one-year wonder” scenario for the Orioles. Baltimore was an astounding 29-9 in one-run games and won 16 straight extra innings games, but that is highly unlikely for a team to duplicate in back-to-back seasons.

Farrell with chance to correct many wrongs of 2012 season Red Sox. New Sox manager is a link to success of Francona era, but also brings a fresh approach.

When a team goes 69-93 in a given season there are many factors that go into the poor record. This was the case for the 2012 Red Sox and one of those factors was manager Bobby Valentine. Valentine never seemed to have the backing of his team from day one and was never able to get into a comfort zone at any point during the season.

Valentine was fired a day after the season came to an end, and then about a month later, Blue Jays manager John Farrell returned to Boston, where he was the pitching coach for four seasons, to become the 45th manager in

Red Sox history.

The Red Sox made a number of acquisitions this offseason but none may be bigger than the addition of Farrell, who will be a familiar face; someone the players respect, trust and are able to openly communicate with.

“The most important thing is that we earn the trust of one another inside the clubhouse first,” Farrell said a few weeks back.

“And going from there is the style of play that people can identify with this group as a team, and [be] confident that the makeup of the group initially will put ourselves in a

position to do that.”

One of the biggest issues in 2012 was the pitching staff, and who better than Farrell to come in and turn things around? Farrell was the one who groomed Jon Lester and Clay Buchholz into All-Star-level pitchers in his time with the team in the late 2000s, so obviously he has an inside track on getting them back on track.

Positional players such as Dustin Pedroia and Ortiz saw what Farrell brings to the table, and are familiar to his style. It all starts with the leaders of the team, Pedroia and Ortiz, and if they are on board and trust their man-

ager, the message of “team” should trickle on down.

While a manager cannot be the sole reason for a team only winning 69 games, there were documented incidents last season under Valentine in which communication channels were cut off.

As the Red Sox look to turn the page and begin a new chapter with a new attitude and culture, bringing in a manger the team is familiar with and respects could prove to be the best move of the offseason.
