UMass Dartmouth reopens after suspect scare

In the news

$333 million Businessweek.com estimates that locking down Boston on Friday may have cost the city as much as $333 million in lost revenues. Residents in the Boston area were ordered to shelter in place and communities were locked down to facilitate the manhunt for bombing suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev.

UMass Dartmouth, where suspected Boston Marathon bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev is enrolled, reopened yesterday morning.

The campus, which serves roughly 10,000 students, was evacuated Friday after authorities said that 19-year-old Tsarnaev was a sophomore there.

The school said on its website yesterday, “We are proud of our entire community for the way we have all worked together during this difficult time. So many of you — our staff, students and faculty — have reached out to help us find solutions to the many challenges we faced.” METRO South Coast

After a grueling week, investigators had yet to charge 19-yearold terror suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev last night following his arrest Friday for allegedly carrying out last week’s deadly Boston Marathon bombings.

Investigators said yesterday Dzhokhar and his brother Tamarlen Tsarnaev, 26, who was killed in a shoot-out Thursday night, were likely planning to launch more violent attacks following Monday’s attack, as officials discovered they had an arsenal of deadly weaponry.

However, evidence also suggests that the brothers acted alone, and that the city is safe.

Boston Police Commissioner Ed Davis said yesterday

that he’s “satisfied there are no explosive devices in the area of Boylston Street,” but said Tsarnaev, who is now suspected of killing four and injuring more than 180 people in a series of events since Monday, was in no condition to be interrogated.

Davis had said earlier police discovered at least four unexploded devices including one

similar to the two used in the twin blasts Monday.

Tsarnaev was arrested Friday night following a 24-hour manhunt and lockdown. He was ultimately found hiding in a boat in a Watertown back yard after suffering multiple gunshot wounds. Tamerlan died the night before during a shoot-out with police that left

Tamerlan’s trip to Russia in question In a search for motives, investigators are honing in on a six-month trip Tamerlan Tsarnaev took to Russia in January 2012, and trying to determine whether he was influenced by Chechen separatists or the Islamist struggle against the West.

That trip, along with Russian interest in Tamerlan and an FBI interview of

him in 2011, have raised questions as to whether danger signals were missed.

As of yesterday, it was unclear if Tamerlan had contact with militant Islamist groups in southern Russia’s Caucasus region.

Prosecutors prepared criminal charges yesterday, which could be brought forth today.

City unveils plan to reopen Copley Square, Boylston It has been a week since Boylston Street was violently transformed from a center of commerce and celebration into a crime scene following the Marathon bombings.

And it appears it will likely be days or weeks

Mayor Thomas Menino, Police Commissioner Ed Davis and other city officials said Copley Square will reopen once federal investigators turn the six-block crime scene over to the city. It may be days before that happens, Davis said.

Once that happens, the

city will reopen Copley Square in a five-phase process that includes decontamination, internal and external building assessments, debris removal and counseling.

“It’s time to move this city forward,” Menino said yesterday, calling Boylston Street, “now the most famous street in the world.”

With their backs turned against evil, a group of religious leaders from various Back Bay places of worship stood on Boylston Street and led a brief interfaith service at the Marathon bombings memorial site yesterday.

“This street has been defiled,” said Rabbi Howard Berman of the Central Reform Temple in Boston. “We came to reclaim it.”

Berman as well as leaders from the Old South Church, which remains closed and within the crime scene, spoke about healing and led more than 100 people at the makeshift memorial in song yesterday afternoon. The people at the site sang, “Let There Be Peace” and “America the Beautiful.”

For Sandy Steen of Boston, the interfaith service was a chance to heal. She wore her 2013 Marathon volunteer jacket, which she got for helping to set up the pre-race pasta dinner, to the service.

“It was a very moving service,” Steen said. “People need to come together, they need

Officials at Mt. Auburn Hospital yesterday said MBTA Officer Richard Donohue is in stable but critical condition after being shot Friday in Watertown in an exchange with the Boston Marathon bombing suspects.

Donohue, a 33-year-old Woburn resident, went into cardiac arrest after he was shot in his right thigh, and suffered major blood loss. According to

Find a study spot where you can get down to business

Say it out loud

Look at what you need to study for a couple weeks before the actual exam.

Set aside some time each day to study and review different things.

Every day you can recap what you learned the day before and build on it instead of cramming everything in the day before your test. It can be tricky, but it’s worth it.

Take a break (even if it’s for a game of Tetris)

The first step to successful studying is finding a place that is studyspecific and has limited distractions. You might even want to disconnect your Wi-Fi and put your phone on airplane mode for an hour or two. It may sound crazy, but it will help you stay focused and make it so that you’re using your time to its maximum potential.

You can’t run on the treadmill for hours on end and your brain can’t work out for that long either.

J: Yeah. Other teenagers go to parties and sometimes I be like, “Why am I here right now?” And most of the time, I just leave right then and there.

Some things I don’t like to do, that other teenagers do. Everyone thinks that since if you make movies, you go to parties — and I like to party, but not normal teenage parties.

SPECIAL. We forecast our lives in 30 years, when Jaden Smith is his father’s age: 24/7 health monitors, no cars.

Thirty years ago, in 1983, people didn’t surf the Internet or talk on cell phones. There was no space tourism, and supermarkets didn’t stock their shelves with genetically engineered food. Now look 30 years into the future.

You’ll see yourself using performance-enhancing drugs, artificial limbs — and only speaking to other humans infrequently.

“Evolution has come to an end,” says Rohit Talwar, CEO of forecasting company Fast Future. “Physically, we humans are not developing anymore, so in the future we’ll use all sorts of enhancement drugs to improve our abilities — for example, our cognition.

Up to 90 percent of university students already admit to using cognition-aiding substances.”

In other words, we’ll try to make ourselves smarter — and more successful in school and at work — by taking drugs. And we’ll go about our smarter lives in better bodies. Futurists predict widespread use of artificial limbs, which may function even better than our natural ones.

“And most of us will have the equivalent of an external hard drive,” predicts Talwar. “Like computers, we’ll have memory in the cloud. And this is already happening, since cell phones essentially function like our external hard drives.”

Indeed, technology will define our lives to a degree unimaginable today. “You think cell phones dominate our lives today?” asks Dutch futurist Erwin Van Lun. “2043 will be incomparable! Cell phones won’t even exist anymore.

We’ll have a world where every window is a cell phone and camera. People will communicate through these windows in a very natural way, asking it about everything from their bank-account balance to philosophical questions.”

But there’s a darker side, too. “We’ll essentially be bots,” notes Josh Calder, founder of forecasting firm Foresight Alliance. “Artificial intelligence will regulate every aspect of our lives, including our social

In “After Earth,” the characters played by Will and Jaden Smith return to the Green Planet a thousand years after cataclysmic events forced humans to leave it. So, what will Earth actually look like in 1,000 years? Should we start packing our solar backpacks?

We asked experts.

The year 1816 was cold. So cold, in fact, that summer never came: It’s still known as the Year Without a Summer. Several centuries earlier, Earth went through a hot stage.

But at no time during the past millennium has the temperature changed as much as it’s on track to do if climate change continues. “There have been quite marked changes in the past millennium,” explains Dr. Nicholas Pepin, principal

lecturer in geography at the University of Portsmouth, who specializes in climate-change research. “In the 12th and 13th century, Europe was warmer than it is now, and there was a severe drought in the U.S. Then, around the 1700s and 1800s, there was the Little Ice Age, which among other things led to smaller droughts. But we’re still talking about temperature changes of one, maximum two degrees Celsius. An increase of more than two degrees would be unprecedented.”

That’s exactly why climatologists, scientists and politicians view an average temperature increase of more than two degrees Celsius as the point of no return for humanity. And yet we’re on track to pass that two-degree red line. According

to Norway’s Center for International Climate and Environmental Research (CICERO), the current rate of global warming will land us at an alarming fivedegree increase.

Even if the increase is a mere two degrees, the results for our descendants during the coming millennium will be disastrous. Cities, even regions, will completely disappear as the water rises. Decreasing rainfall will lead to droughts, which may lead to wars. And epidemics will erupt as entire populations flee sinking areas and resettle in crowded cities.

The Little Ice Age seems like an attractive alternative.

The Academy Awardwinning actress was arrested and briefly jailed in Atlanta Friday night after her husband, CAA agent James Toth, was arrested for a DUI. According to an exclusive report by Variety, it went down like this: A cop noticed a 2013 Ford Focus weaving out of its lane early Friday morning. The cop pulled the car over and smelled alcohol on Toth’s breath. The cop then administered a sobriety test.

While this was happening, Witherspoon became “agitated” in the Ford. “Mrs. Witherspoon began to hang out the window and say that she did not believe that I was a real police officer,” according to the police report. “I told Mrs. Witherspoon to sit on her butt and be quiet.”

After Toth blew a .139 on a Breathalyzer test and was arrested, Witherspoon became more and more vocal. “Mrs. Witherspoon asked, ‘Do you know my name?’ I answered, ‘No, I don’t need to know your name.’ I then added, ‘right now.’ Mrs. Witherspoon stated, ‘You’re about to find out who I am,’ the report states. “Mrs. Witherspoon also stated, ‘You are going to be on national news.’ I advised Mrs. Witherspoon that was fine.”

Some altercation took place between Witherspoon and the officer, and so he booked her with “disorderly conduct (obstruction).”

According to Variety, the couple was released on bond at approximately 3:30 a.m. A court appearance is scheduled for today at 8 a.m. Witherspoon and Toth are in Atlanta while she films the new movie “The Good Lie.”

Sticks and Stones: ‘Mad Men’ creator cares what you say about his show TV. The “Mad Men” creator takes Internet reactions to his show so seriously he’s banned from reading them.

A word of caution to angry Internet commenters: “Mad Men” creator Matthew Weiner knows what you’re writing about his show. At least he used to, until he was banned from visiting blogs and sites by his wife and writing staff.

“This is a terrible job for someone as oversensitive as I am. When I was on ‘The Sopranos,’ [blogs] didn’t even exist,” Weiner says. “I try and

stay away from it. What usually happens now is somebody — a friend — will send me something. And it’s still this addiction.”

As an example, he offers an episode from last season, “Signal 30,” that garnered some reactions he didn’t appreciate.

“It was Vincent [Kartheiser]’s performance, you know, when he’s in the elevator and says, ‘We’re supposed to be friends. I have nothing,’” Weiner remembers. “That to me is like the saddest thing

I ever wrote. I was very emotional about it, and when it aired people are like, ‘A Pete story. I hate that.’ So I just try and stay away from that stuff as much as possible.”

Hence the banning. And while he’s been good for the most part, he slipped up a few times last season. “I really was off it for a while, and then [the Season 4 episode] ‘The Suitcase’ happened and everyone was like, ‘You have to read what people said about this thing,’” he says. “So I read it and I loved

that episode, but the episode that was on the week after that was actually my favorite of the season, ‘The Summer Man.’ It’s a very emotional story for me.

So of course I read [the reactions] the next week and it’s, like, brutal. The immediate response is, you know, hatred, anger, disgust, betrayal. And I kind of am like, I can’t believe I let these strangers hurt me.”

Fleetwood Mac is Boston strong Live review. Acclaimed rock writer Stephen Davis reflects on a band that time has made bolder.

Fleetwood Mac has a long history in Boston. When the young English blues band arrived in America in 1969, they were hired as the house band at the Boston Tea Party, the city’s legendary electric ballroom. And when Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham joined the band in 1975, Boston radio stations were the first to put the newlook Fleetwood Mac into heavy rotation. “Boston is part of our Fleetwood Mac family,� an emotional Stevie Nicks declared from the stage of the Garden, where the current lineup played to a packed house on Thursday night as the city tried to recover from the marathon bombings just three days earlier. “And you know, we feel that we’re part of the Boston family as well.� As the cheering swelled, she shouted, “Boston Strong!�

The band took the stage in the dark to the sound of chirping crickets, a nice touch. They roared into “Second Hand News,� indicating that the backstory of Nicks and Bucking-

ham’s broken love affair would be the evening’s main subtext.

This was confirmed when they followed with “The Chain.�

Before playing the soft-rock classic “Dreams,� Nicks told the crowd, “In times of trouble, my mother would say, ‘Sing to them.’ So tonight we’re going to sing two and a half hours of kick-ass rock ‘n’ roll for you.�

Amazon gives power to the viewers Amazon, the world’s largest Internet retailer, has been filming pilots in recent months for comedy and kids TV shows such as “Alpha House,� “Betas� and “Teeny Tiny Dogs.�

The company posted them all on the Amazon Instant Video section of its website to get feedback on which shows viewers like best. The pilots can also be watched on Amazon

Instant Video apps through other Web-connected devices like Roku, Microsoft’s Xbox and Nintendo’s Wii. Based on viewers’ reactions and reviews, the Amazon Studios production company will decide which projects to make into full TV series to be shown on Prime Instant Video, Amazon’s subscription-based online video service.

Cruise: King again (again) Box office. “Oblivion” brings its star back to the top of the charts once more.

Tom Cruise’s post-apocalyptic thriller “Oblivion” wiped out the box office competition, racking up $38.2 million in weekend ticket sales during its U.S. and Canadian debut.

The debut of “Oblivion” knocked baseball movie “42” into second place. The drama about Jackie Robinson, the first black player in the Major Leagues, earned $18 million from Friday through Sunday after leading the charts a week ago.

In third place, animated Stone Age comedy “The Croods” earned $9.5 million during its fifth weekend in theaters, according to studio estimates. Global sales for the Dreamworks Animation production were estimated at $429.4 million through Sunday, according to distributor Twentieth Century Fox International.

“Oblivion,” a story set in 2077 about the last humans on Earth, opened a week earlier to strong results in overseas markets. The North American (U.S. and Canadian) results exceeded pre-weekend forecasts for debut sales in the low- to mid-$30 million range, and earned Cruise his biggest opening since the “Mission Impossible” films.

In “Oblivion,” Cruise plays a man who repairs the drones that monitor the nearly empty Earth while its last human inhabitants search for a new home. Morgan Freeman costars.

Combined with international receipts, the movie’s global sales stood at $150.2 million Sunday. The movie cost about $120 million to produce.

No other movies were released nationwide over the weekend.

Rounding out the top five, horror spoof “Scary Movie 5” grossed $6.3 million, and action sequel “G.I. Joe: Retaliation” took in $5.8 million.

Overall, movie ticket sales for 2013 reached $2.76 bil-

lion, running 11.2 percent behind the same point last year, according to the box office division of Hollywood.com.

These days we’ve become accustomed to frightening news.

When terrifying things happen in the world, there’s no way to avoid feeling fearful — even if you live millions of miles away.

Tour guides relish the opportunity to teach about their cities and learn about them, too.

Even after 16 years as a tour guide, Josh Silver still breaks out in an irrepressible ear-toear grin when he discusses the history of Philadelphia.

He started in 1997 as a parttime guide at Clifton House — a historical home just outside of Philadelphia — and discovered he was a natural. Silver has an affinity for local history, combined with a habit of describing events and artifacts with strict precision: “My friend calls it my bow-tie way of talking,” he says with a laugh.

“The challenge for me is staying fresh. And that takes a lot of self-generated motivation,” explains Silver. “After a while you have a lot of material to lean on, but you’ve got to push yourself to keep learning and incorporating new things.”

Today Silver is one of the most sought-after guides in the city. But he still has to hustle to remain a full-time guide. There are few — if any — Philly tour guiding companies that offer

full-time work, and almost all hire guides exclusively as freelancers. Silver has worked for almost every tour guiding company in the city, and currently rotates between two small forprofit companies and one nonprofit.

“It can be an excellent way to get some supplemental income with something that’s always challenging and keeps you learning,” says Silver. “But if you want to do it, I think the first step is coming out of your shell. There are monthly meetings of tour guides. There are tours offered every day. Get out there and start talking to people, because that’s kind of a big requirement for the job.”

The recent Red Sox hot streak came to an end yesterday afternoon as the Royals snapped Boston’s seven-game win streak with a 4-2 victory in Game 1 of a day-night doubleheader at Fenway Park. It was the longest Red Sox winning streak since June of 2011.

Another Sox streak was halted as starting pitcher Ryan Dempster was the first Boston starter to allow more than three runs in a start this season. The streak spanned 16 starts, the longest in more than 50 years in the American League to open a season. Dempster went seven innings, allowing four NBA playos

runs on six hits while striking out eight.

After the Red Sox led 2-1 after one, the Royals scored three times in the fourth inning to take the 4-2 advantage and never looked back.

The big blow was a two-out, two-RBI single from catcher Salvador Perez.

Clayton Mortensen and Alex Wilson pitched two scoreless innings of relief for the Red Sox. Ervin Santana was outstanding for the Royals after the first inning as he retired 17 of the last 18 Red Sox hitters he faced.

Offensively the Red Sox were led by David Ortiz (RBI) and Daniel Nava as they had three and two hits respectively. The bottom of the lineup struggled, as the No. 5-No. 9 hitters went a combined 1-for-19 on the afternoon.
