Breast-feeding advocacy job to pay $70k “Nanny” Mayor Michael Bloomberg is about to become a wet nurse. The city has set aside $70,000 to hire a manager who will oversee an initiative encouraging breastfeeding in Brooklyn.

The Breast-Feeding Empowerment Zone will reach out to certain Brooklyn communities with free consultations, home visits, and education about the health and financial benefits of breast-feeding. A Health Department job listing for the position quoted a salary of $73,000. EMILY JOHNSON

NYers ask cops to stop confiscating condoms Pushing change. Advocates say condoms as evidence hurts public health. Clara Sierra was leaving a club after a night out when cops accused her of being a prostitute. Sierra, 40, said she was trying to find her way back home after leaving a club when cops approached her. The police were sure they were right when they found two condoms. Sierra spent 10 days in Rikers. Advocates say too many New Yorkers land in jail after cops confiscate condoms. Some are people like Sierra. Many transgender people report that cops assume they are sex workers.

And despite one’s reasons for walking on a sidewalk, everyone should practice safe sex, especially prostitutes, advocates say. Sierra is one of the people pushing Albany this week to approve legislation barring condoms as prostitution evidence. Supporters of the No Condoms as Evidence Bill say taking away condoms poses a public health threat. “It is a waste of money and a shame that the Health Department gives out condoms and the police take them away and destroy them,” said Sierra, an educator at Harm Reduction Educators, which helps sex workers. In Long Island, Nassau County District Attorney Kathleen Rice banned using condoms as evidence, saying losing condoms was not worth a “limited courtroom gain.”

Xiona Geovane, 35, told Metro that two weeks ago on Roosevelt Avenue in Queens, cops accused her and a friend of prostitution. They arrested them after finding condoms in her friend’s purse, she said, and they spent the weekend in jail. “I shouldn’t be afraid to be walking with condoms,” Geovane said. The NYPD defended its practice, saying it nabs pimps. “We do not understand why anyone would want to ban the use of condoms in helping to prove cases against pimps and sex traffickers and to shut down brothels,” NYPD spokesman Paul Browne said. “That’s what the bill sought by these advocates in fact does, and that’s why we oppose it.”

Is landing gear near WTC a hoax?

The NYPD has reported that a piece of landing gear, seemingly from one of the airplanes that crashed into the World Trade Center on Sept. 11, 2001, has been found behind the Park 51 Islamic cultural center. The object is wedged in an 18-inch space between 51 Park Place and 50 Murray St. Over the weekend, NYPD officers were sta-

tioned in front of the entrance to 51 Park Place, which was cordoned off with police tape. The NYPD is treating the area as an active crime scene, and the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner is slated to determine whether to sift the surrounding soil for possible human remains. However, it is not known whether the part is from one of those

specific planes. In a photo provided by the NYPD, a rope intertwined with the machinery is visible. Police are not ruling out the possibility that it may have been lowered into the space from the roof, Police Commissioner Ray Kelly told the Times. Allegations. Bronx D.A. finds ‘pattern’ of abuse at Horace Mann Bronx prosecutors revealed that an investigation found a “systemic pattern� of alleged sexual abuse at the Horace Mann School, including 12 different alleged abusers, but that they could not prosecute. After a New York Times article detailed allegations of decades of abuse at the private school, the City Council asked the Bronx District Attorney to investigate. The D.A. set up a hotline where victims could call. About 30 people phoned in during about a 10-month period. Officials conducted 60 interviews, 25 with victims of alleged abuse. Prosecutors found a “systemic pattern of alleged abuse beyond what was outlined� in the article. The alleged actions ranged from inappropriate behavior to sexual

an organizer for NYClass. The ultimate goal, according to the advocacy group, is to eliminate the use of horse-drawn carriages in the city — a practice they say is inhumane, pointing to the animals’ long working hours and lack of pasture time. Reptile amnesty day. Three gators handed over in Suffolk Co. Three alligators were turned in and no questions were asked on Saturday at the Suffolk County SPCA’s first amnesty day for illegal reptiles and amphibians. The alligators, which measured between 3 and 4 1/2 feet, were not the only cold-blooded pets released into the SPCA’s care, the Daily News reported. A boa constrictor, several tortoises and

a turtle were also handed over to the group. Illegal pets have long been a problem in Long Island, where nine alligators were found in the fall of last year. “They do not make good pets,” SPCA Chief Roy Gross said. “There’s a reason why they’re illegal. “Stick to your cats and dogs.” EMILY JOHNSON

A decision may come as early as today, before the start of a two-week recess. As hard as it is to predict when a ruling will be announced, it is more difficult to say how it might change the law. Still, even a small move in the Texas case could mark the beginning of a new chapter limiting college administrators’ dis-

cretion in using race in deciding on admissions. For decades, dating back at least to the John F. Kennedy administration of the 1960s, leaders have struggled with what “affirmative action” should be taken to help minorities. In the early years, it was seen as a way to remedy racial prejudice and discrimination; in recent decades, it’s a way to bring diversity to campuses and workplaces. Since 1978, the Supreme Court has been at the center of disputes over when universities may consider applicants’ race. In that year’s groundbreaking decision involving a University of California medical school, the justices forbade quotas but said schools could weigh race with other factors. In another seminal case, the court in 2003 affirmed the use of race in admissions to create diversity in colleges. Marvin Krislov, now president of Oberlin College in Ohio and a past vice president of the University of Michigan, says that university administrators are concerned about how broadly the ruling may sweep and whether it will reduce the number of minority students. “Colleges and universities care deeply about student body diversity,” he says, adding of his colleagues in higher educa-

As host of Saturday night’s White House Correspondents’ Dinner, the annual event where journalists and celebrities mix with the Washington elite, host Conan O’Brien made the following amazing observation about his hometown: “It’s been

said recently that you don’t mess with Boston,” said the Brookline native and Harvard grad. “As someone who grew up there, I’d like to echo that sentiment. It’s really pretty simple: If you’re going to pick on a city, don’t choose one where nine out of 10 people are related to a cop.”

With a movie this size, I guess it’s what you signed up for. Yeah, you forget that. It’s like having a baby for a woman, you know. Is there anything you can do to lobby for that? No, but you can get on it. Just park yourself outside of [Marvel Studio head] Kevin Feige’s house. I’m sure that will go over very well. Well, get your friends. Don’t just do it by yourself. That’s not enough. That’s weird. How does the balance between making your TV show, “House of Lies,” and your film work? It’s great. I mean, the show is a blitzkrieg when we’re doing it. It’s three months and we’re shooting an episode per five days, which is really, really fast. But it’s a testament to the production team behind us and our director, Stephen Hopkins, the writers and the network as well, that we’re able to get through it. And it’s three months out of the year, so it’s pretty self-contained, and then I have the rest of the year to do the other

things. I have a production company that’s pretty healthy right now — we’re doing a lot of stuff with them. And I try to get in some family time and rest and all that. The ‘Price’ is (mostly) right Blue-collar drama. The director of “Goodbye Solo” finally works with the “High School Musical” kid. If there’s anyone in American cinema today more consciously carrying the torch of classic European neorealist cinema, it’s Ramin Bahrani. “Man Push Cart,” “Chop Shop” and “Goodbye Solo” are all perceptive looks at the working class that don’t simply honor their struggle but respect them enough to reveal their flaws. Perhaps it’s inevitable that every director winds up with a star-heavy cast, even if one of those stars is

Zac Efron. And Bahrani — who has classically leaned toward non-pros, or at least under-knowns — is apparently no exception. “At Any Price” is a bit of Frankenstein monster, if not in the ways one would think. Dennis Quaid plays Henry Whipple, a smalltown Illinois seed farmer first seen lecturing his layabout son Dean (Efron) on the finer points of shamelessly manipulating people using a big grin and a forced positive attitude. A third-generation business owner, he keeps things going with genetically altered seeds and a shortage of ethics, and expects his two sons to carry on the family name. But one is off traipsing about Argentina, while Dean seems uninterested in everything, save striking

back at dad. Where Bahrani’s previous films were tightly focused, the bigger “Price” — which also makes room for Heather Graham as an evil Midwestern version of a temptress — is more diffuse. It’s rarely clear if it’s being driven by character, narrative or a savage satire of today’s economic woes.

When it takes a turn for a morality tale in the 11th hour, the cleanup can’t help but feel rushed and only partially earned. But there’s so much goodness here. Quaid, as a kind of grifter who’s been “on” so long he’s even fooled himself, hasn’t been this energized in ages. And Bahrani stretches his stuff.

His work here is more slick (read: the camera’s on a tripod). It often doesn’t feel like him, except that the concerns are roughly the same. The most shocking parts come during scenes depicting Dean’s sudden jones for stock-car driving. The racing sequences are bizarrely kinetic, with Bahrani shedding his gritty realist

side for an approximation of “Ronin”-era John Frankenheimer. No single film that veers between such extremes could always stay coherent, but this messy drama does more good than not.

Jim James taps into the ‘Sound of God’ Solo project. The My Morning Jacket singer talks wordless novels, shape-changing songs and putting down the guitar. While My Morning Jacket take a short break from recording and touring, founder and lead singer Jim James continues to surprise his listeners with the drastic sonic departure of his recently released solo debut, “Regions of Light and Sound of God.� We spoke with James shortly before last month’s SXSW Music Conference in Austin, Texas, but we had to enlist him for another conversation after taking in his performance. While James has been known to step onstage for a solo set or collaborate under the moniker Yim Yames, this project marks his first official solo record.

Yim Yames or Jim James? “There is no difference. I just got tired of dealing with it,� says James. “People just didn’t get it and didn’t see the humor in it. Humor is not appreciated today in our modern music world. People want musicians to be so f— ing serious all the time. It just turned into a snowball of people being like “WHY WHY WHY WHY WHY!?� I mean, I don’t know, I just thought it was funny. Sorry.�

With “Regions,� he has produced an epic collection of songs that seem as though divine intervention and production value have led the songwriter to explore new and sacred soil. “A couple of these songs had a few seeds that had

been milling around for a few years,� says James. “Then I got this book called ‘God’s Man’ by Lynd Ward that really inspired the songs to change shape. I almost became hypnotized by it and songs just started coming out of that. The

best way I can describe it was more like scoring a film and less like writing an album. It brought the record into focus.� Published in 1929 and credited as America’s first wordless novel, “God’s Man� is comprised of 139

woodcuts transferred to paper, telling the story of an artist and his struggle to free himself from the bonds of the business world. “The cool thing about the book,� says James, is that “it’s from 1929, but

it’s so fresh. There’s something about that art deco movement that survives with a timeless quality. It still has this power. I realized I wanted to build a sound upon that which was modern, but was still old and crackly at the same time. I wanted it to be the sound of future past — like I made it to sound like the year 4000, but I made it in the year 3990.� Taking the record on the road, James is joined by a full band that has a more electronic feel than My Morning Jacket. The band also gives him the freedom to dance like a frontman. “I love playing guitar, but it’s so nice to be free of it,� he says. “Then when you play it again, it becomes a very special reunion. It’s where my head’s been at. I’ve been more into dance and soul music and things that aren’t as guitar-oriented.�

Who’s the boss? You are. Big boss. In her new book, Kathleen Brush explores her tough-as-nails leadership philosophy. Everyone seems to have an opinion on what it takes to be a successful leader, but Kathleen Brush wrote the book on it. The author spent years as a turn-around consultant, helping failing companies find their core issues and resolve them. We caught up with Brush to chat about “The Power of One: You’re the Boss,” her howto on being the boss. You book has some strong scenarios of poor leadership. Did you witness this behavior first hand? Yes, most definitely. I didn’t have to conjure up

any examples. It’s funny, I often hear people say, ‘You could have inserted my name in any anecdote, I do the same thing and I didn’t even realize.’

So you saw many of the same problems surfacing at various companies? Sure, if you want to look at general problems. The particulars can be distinct. Often, though, companies forget that they need to reinvent themselves. When they lack strong leadership, it can be devastating to progress.

So how can people get it right? I tell people to put their coach hat on, not the big, bad boss hat. These managers come back and say it was a great experience. The one thing I really want people to understand is that to be successful as a boss, you can’t be the person you always disliked. You can’t be the jerk boss. Be the boss that people like and respect.

Isn’t that the core idea of your book? It is, without question. I’m trying to address a problem I see everywhere: Talented people who get into leadership because they’re a good account person, for example, but they’re lacking as a boss. Your book says that being

Boston pulls out OT win to extend series NBA playoffs. The Knicks can’t sweep the series in Boston as they drop Game 4 behind an ugly game from Anthony. The Knicks strolled into Boston’s TD Garden undermanned and ready to close out the series via a sweep, but ended up coming up just short in a 97-90 overtime defeat. New York now leads the series, 3-1, but had every intention of coming back home without the Celtics in tow. Paul Pierce and Jeff Green made sure the Celtics would be making a return trip to New York, as they poured in 29 points and 26 points, respectively. Kevin Garnett, who’s been battling a hip pointer all series, also came up big for a desperate Celtics team as he added 13 points and a game-high 17 rebounds. The Knicks almost pulled off a historic comeback as they stormed back from down 20 points in the third quarter and made it a nip-andtuck affair in the fourth quarter. Alas, it wasn’t meant to be for the Knicks, as they couldn’t get the necessary stops down the stretch — particularly on shots from Jason Terry (nine points in overtime) — or make the key buckets. It also didn’t help that

Turn, turn, turn — The Knicks led the league in fewest turnovers (11.7) during the regular season, and were prudent in that category in the first three games. No so in Game 4, as they committed 15 turnovers — including 12 in the first half. They had more giveaways than field goals (11) in the first half.

Who benched J.R.? — J.R. Smith wasn’t seen by Knicks fans, as he was serving a one-game suspension for his errant elbow in Game 3. Smith was sorely missed, as the Knicks’ offense was stagnant, shooting 34.4 percent, and their bench was nonexistent.

Battle of the boards — The Knicks couldn’t rebound to pull off the historic comeback win, but they did rebound on the glass nicely by hammering the Celtics, 54-40. Iman Shumpert had an impressive 12 rebounds, while Tyson Chandler added 11 boards.

It looks like Monta Ellis’ prediction of the Bucks in six games was just a little off. Instead, LeBron James and the Heat swept Milwaukee out of the playoffs yesterday with an 88-77 victory in Game 4. The Heat were without Dwyane Wade, who missed the game with a knee injury, but James had 30 points in the win.

Carmelo Anthony went ice cold, shooting 10-of-35. “We would’ve liked to have both games, but we got one game,” Raymond Felton said. “That was our goal.”
