Food truck zones would curb eateries on wheels Food fight. New council bill attempts to bring order to Wild West of NYC food trucks. New York’s food trucks offer up an amazing variety, from waffles and cupcakes to schnitzel and Korean tacos. But as their numbers have expanded, complaints have started coming in from businesses and residents. “Food trucks have become popular in many corners of the city, but most of them are operating illegally,” City Councilman Dan Garodnick told Metro. In an attempt to resolve the free-for-all, including instances such as vending from metered spots or not following parking laws, Garodnick introduced a bill that would create spe-
cial parking spots for food trucks. No more than one truck would be allowed per block, and half of the spots would be outside Manhattan. The bill set the maximum number of food truck spots at 450. “I am certain the bill will be revised to increase the number of spaces,” said David Weber, president of the NYC Food Truck Association. Other stakeholders believe something must be done, but disagree on specifics. The mayor’s office made a number of suggestions, including that food trucks bid for the right to certain street locations, that they switch to cleaner fuels and that they be responsible for the cleanliness of their immediate vicinity.

Christine Quinn stood with hate crime survivors, community members and other elected officials at Madison Square Garden yesterday to call for witnesses to last week’s alleged hate crime to come forward. Last week, a group of men in Midtown Manhattan attacked two men, shouting antigay slurs at them and physically assaulting
them. The NYPD released video footage of eight men wanted for questioning and asked the public to come forward with any information on the incident. The suspects verbally harassed two men, 22 and 28, as they were walking southbound on Eighth Avenue near 34th Street. The suspects got closer to the victims and pushed
them to the ground, cops said. The suspects punched one victim in the face, causing him to suffer a broken nose. The other victim had bruising on his right hand. Airbnb users face some legal tangles Crash pad. The popular site has hired lobbyists to change a law that could spell trouble for N.Y. hosts.
LES MAGIQUES COLLECTION
If you have listed your apartment on Airbnb, you might want to review the state’s “multiple dwellings” law: It turns out that a good number of listings are illegal in New York. According to a report in Crain’s, about 30,000 New Yorkers are signed up as hosts. A state law enacted in 2011 is prompting trouble for those hosts. The law was meant to prevent developers from buying up buildings zoned as residential and then running them as hotels without adhering to the regulations that apply to hotels. But now it could be getting in the way of short-term sublets by tenants, like those on Airbnb. Lobbyists are working in Albany now on behalf of Airbnb to change that law to make it more amenable. A spokesperson for Airbnb said that “87 percent of Airbnb hosts in New York list a home they live in” — and not as an illegal hotel.

Analysis
Airbnb’s defense Airbnb and its proponents argue that the law doesn’t apply to people who are sharing their homes, as opposed to renting out their apartment while they’re not there. A spokesperson for
Airbnb said: “They are average New Yorkers trying to pay their monthly bills and we are working with leaders in New York towards a more consistent, fair and progressive set of laws that will allow the community of travelers and hosts who rely on Airbnb to continue to flourish.”

MTA ‘green’ card rakes in big cash The $1 fee imposed by the MTA to encourage subway riders to reuse their MetroCards is producing an unexpected amount of extra revenue for the transit agency. The so-called “green” MetroCard was supposed to reduce the number of used MetroCards that end up in the garbage, but a transit executive said recently that more transit riders are paying the $1 fee for a new card than was initially expected, The New York Daily News

If the fee continues to produce as much extra cash for the MTA, the agency will exceed the $20 million in new revenues and savings that it anticipated when it first drafted the budget, the executive said. The $1 surcharge, imposed in March, was expected to generate an estimated $18 million in revenue this year. New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman sent letters to the heads of Apple, Google, Microsoft and Samsung asking them to help prevent theft and questioning why phones aren’t better protected from being resold on the black market. He cited a rise in violent street crimes including phone thefts, often called “Apple picking.” He asked why the tech companies “cannot also create technology to render stolen devices inoperable and thereby eliminate the expanding black market.” According to Schneider-
man’s office, between January and September of last year, 11,447 smartphones were reported swiped, an increase of 3,280 from the year before. This month, a woman was mugged at gunpoint in Crown Heights for her Android phone. In February, three people were stabbed on a Queens subway platform in a fight over the phone, and last April, a chef, 26, was killed for his phone in the Bronx.

Is something you ate bugging you? Chew on this. Restaurants in Europe are starting to put insects on the menu amid reports that eating bugs can help fight obesity. The thought of eating beetles, caterpillars and ants may give you the creeps, but the authors of a U.N. report published yesterday said the health benefits of consuming nutritious insects could help fight obesity. More than 1,900 species of insects are eaten around the world, mainly in Africa and Asia, but people in the West generally turn their
noses up at the likes of grasshoppers, termites and other crunchy fare. The authors of the study by the Forestry Department, part of the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), said many insects contained the same amount of protein and minerals as meat and more healthy fats doctors recommend in balanced diets. “In the West we have
a cultural bias, and think that because insects come from developing countries, they cannot be good,” said scientist Arnold van Huis from Wageningen University in the Netherlands, one of the authors of the report. Eva Muller of the FAO said restaurants in Europe were starting to offer insect-based dishes, presenting them to diners as exotic delicacies. REUTERS
Not an acquired taste
Van Huis said barriers to enjoying dishes such as bee larvae yogurt were psychological — in a blind test by his team, nine out of 10 people preferred meatballs made from roughly half meat and half mealworms to those made from meat.

Bangladesh. H&M, others, agree to factory standards
H&M clothing line ILYA S. SAVENOK, GETTY IMAGES
The world’s two biggest fashion retailers Inditex and H&M have backed an accord aimed at preventing a repeat of last month’s collapse of a Bangladesh factory building that killed more than 1,100 people. The agreement on fire and building safety, which is being driven by the International Labour Organization, trade unions and
other lobby groups, has been under negotiation since the factory collapsed on April 24. A series of deadly incidents at factories, including a fire in November that killed 112 people, has focused global attention on safety standards in Bangladesh’s booming garment industry, the world’s biggest exporter of clothing after China. Blue Ivy 2.0: Is Beyonce pregnant?
1
Everyone! Listen up! The New York Post is citing multiple sources that claim Beyonce and her husband Jay-Z are expecting their second child. And their reps are not responding to calls. But here’s why this is dubious: Beyonce is in the middle of a giant world tour. Millions and millions are on the line. “The Mrs. Carter Show World Tour” ends Aug. 5 in Brooklyn. People worship at the altar of B — but people shell out major bucks for tickets to see Beyonce doing her thing and getting all Sasha Fierce onstage, not a pregnant Beyonce having to sit in a chair to perform. (That is the exact opposite of Sasha Fierce; that is Sasha Convalescence.)

Vogue Editor-in-Chief Anna Wintour banned a number of celebrities from attending last week’s Met Gala, including Kris Jenner and all the Real Housewives, according to Radar. “Anna approves every star who enters, and although she finally relented on Kim, she drew the line at Kris, who was desperate to attend,” says a source. Kris Jenner? Desperate? You don’t say!

Q&A
On the Cumberbatch Benedict Cumberbatch’s character is really creepy. How do you deal with bad guys like him in real life? You come across people like that on a Saturday night, drunk and in the mood for a fight. You can see that longing for violence. Have you ever picked up on it? I tend not to go out. But it’s a testament to Benedict’s acting in that he’s possibly one of the sweetest people. I did see him get carb rage once. He was working out for a shower scene that didn’t end up in the movie — a lot of girls will be disappointed — and he’d had no carbohydrates for two days. That’s as close as he gets to showing any kind of madness — carb rage.
SIMON PEGG The “Shaun of the Dead” star talks about being in not terrible shape — just terrible compared to Chris Pine.
SCOTTY RIDES AGAIN It’s hard to think of a geek who’s had better luck than Simon Pegg. In his career, he’s impressed one of his favorite filmmakers, George A. Romero, with “Shaun of the Dead.” And he’s become Scotty, chief engineer aboard the starship Enterprise, in J.J. Abrams’ much-loved reboot of the “Star Trek” franchise whose sequel, “Star Trek Into Darkness,” comes out Wednesday. As a cherry on top, Abrams is about to tackle the “Star Wars” sequels, although Pegg isn’t harassing his boss for spoilers. There’s a new ‘Star Wars’ film coming, obviously, from ‘Into Darkness’ director J.J. Abrams. What’s your strategy to get J.J. to tell you something about it? I don’t need a strategy. If J.J. wants to tell you something he will, and if he doesn’t it’s because he wants to keep things close to his chest. So you didn’t get him drunk or anything? I respect him too much for that. I’m very happy to be kept in the dark because I haven’t seen a good “Star Wars” film since “Return of the Jedi.” In ‘Into Darkness,’ there’s a scene where the ship is
going all over the place and you and Chris Pine are jumping around and hanging off railings. Is that look on your face genuine terror? It was more pain. I had to hang from Chris’ hand and the harness could only go from my one hip, so I was slightly skewed. But no, it was all acting. My 3-yearold daughter was on set that day and she assumed that’s what my job was: hanging. She was like, “Are you going to hang today, daddy?” Scotty doesn’t manage to hold onto the bar and is saved by a much stronger Captain Kirk. Ever been like, ‘Man, I really wish I had Chris’ body?’ You should feel his arms. They’re like oak. We’d go to the gym together and it was amazing how the female contingent would start gravitating towards him. Nobody paid me any attention. But no, I was pretty buff at the time! You and Nick Frost have appeared in ‘Shaun of the Dead,’ ‘Hot Fuzz’ and other films together. If you could, what part would you give him in ‘Star Trek’? I’d love him to play Harry Mudd from the original ‘66 series. But I wouldn’t necessarily want him to be
in it and I don’t think he would want to either. It’s not like we have to come as a package. You don’t have a love interest in this movie…. What about my little guy? That’s my love interest. The little fellow. We’re a unit. We’re married. Your little alien assistant? But you don’t even get to kiss it. I don’t kiss it. It would be hard to. He needs a bit of moisturizing. His face is a little rocky. But if you could, who would you share a kiss with, Alice Eve or Zoe Saldana? That’s not a choice any man could make. They’re both as gorgeous as each other. They come in and everyone is just like, “WOW!” Have you met everyone in Hollywood that you’ve wanted to meet, as a fan? I don’t think you could ever meet everybody. L.A. is like one of those safari parks where you can walk amongst the animals. You see, like, Jeff Goldblum in the supermarket.

Killing them softly Interview. Ben Wheatley, director of “Sightseers, wants to make you happy (this time). Chances are if you’ve heard the name Ben Wheatley, it’s because he last directed “Kill List, an indescribable mash-up of horror, crime and kitchen-sink English drama with a macabre sense of humor — even when one character’s head is repeatedly pounded with a hammer. His latest, “Sightseers, is a bit nicer, in that it’s an English camping comedy about a couple (Alice Lowe and Steve Oram) who occasionally murder strangers for no reason. “I think they were worried I was going to make ‘Kill List 2,’ Wheatley says of the project, which existed before he came aboard. He has a history in comedy, on television and online.
“I know how to structure a gag. Comedy’s like a flame that you have to feed with fuel. If it dies it’s very hard to get back. After the hammer scene in ‘Kill List,’ I thought no one would ever laugh again. Doing a film with less head trauma — although there is some — was a relief after making what he describes as “a really horrible horror film, at least in the sense of its increasing bleakness. “I made that film and it made people really unhappy. I thought it would be nice if they came out having a laugh and were cheered by something I made, he says. “It’s not the happiest comedy, ‘Sightseers’ — but it’s a step in the right direction. “Sightseers goes back and forth between comedy — both Lowe and Oram, who wrote the script together, have a deep history in British comedy — and horrible gore, as when one pesky rambler’s face

is smashed in. “It’s got a lot in common with [Paul] Verhoeven, and ‘Python’ stuff, he says. “[Terry] Gilliam does that often, going from stuff that’s really horrible to stuff that’s funny and satirical, then back to horror. You feel like you’re being pulled and pushed around. I like that feeling. Wheatley also offers up a theory that comics can, sometimes at least, make better dramatic actors than serious thespians. “The difference between a comedian and an actor is a comedian has the life experience of stand-up comedy. They’ve died in front of audiences a lot. They know what sadness is — for f— ing real. And it’s their own material they’ve died with. That is more personal than being in a play that’s s—.

LUCY KNISLEY In her deliciously illustrated memoir, Lucy Knisley draws (and draws upon) key episodes in her life through food and recipes.
‘RELISH: MY LIFE IN THE KITCHEN’ IS EASY TO DEVOUR For Lucy Knisley, the decision to create an illustrated memoir was easy. “Food is something that interests me, and comics are how I tell my stories, so it was a natural decision to make comics about food, she says about the impetus for her new memoir, “Relish: My Life in the Kitchen, a hybrid kitchen how-to and memoir. Here’s how she cooked it up.
Tired of Conventional Weight Loss Methods Failing?
Each chapter ends with an illustrated recipe; how did you pick these recipes? The recipes are simple and familiar to me, and pertain to the chapter previous. I wanted to share some of my favorites, and allow readers to think about food abstractly, through the stories and then, more directly, through the recipes.

that can be frustrating. Is there some food you just can’t do? Can’t eat or can’t draw? I think I could draw any food! I had the opportunity in Korea not long ago to try eating live octopus. It’s a little dangerous, as the octopus can choke you on the way down if you don’t fully chew it up first — and while I eat meat, I just couldn’t chew up a live creature in my mouth, especially one so cute. Pass.
Which is your favorite food to draw? Which is the most challenging? Favorite food to draw is probably the croissant — they’re such fun shapes, and I’ve had a lot
of practice with drawing them. My least favorite is probably the kind of food that might taste delicious, but look like brown goo -— like curry or stew. It’s hard to get across what it is through drawing, and
When did you realize that food was something to cherish rather than fear? I’ve never feared food — always loved it. It’s something inherent in my upbringing, to love and to be curious about food. There’s a lot to fear nowadays, of course, but it’s important to remember that food is a shared human experience and can open us up to new experiences that connect us with one another, which is not to be feared.

A change of Hart Blues. Beth Hart has been down and out, but she’s ready to watch her career go “Bang Bang Boom Boom. What may be most moving about the footage of Beth Hart performing at the Kennedy Honors concert in December, is watching the members of her audience realize what a powerful moment they’re witnessing. Hart nonchalantly walks out onto the stage to join guitarist Jeff Beck to sing “I’d Rather Go Blind, a song made famous by the late Etta James. The segment is to honor blues great Buddy Guy, who is transfixed from the first note Hart sings. Later in the song, the camera pans to the Obamas, who are deep in reverent head-nodding that transcends any possible polite pretending

for the camera. And when she finishes, the members of Led Zeppelin are among the first to their feet for a standing ovation. “I remember I sat myself down and I was like, ‘Don’t miss enjoying this amazing experience that’s coming your way by being nervous. Just focus and do your gig,’ recalls Hart, who had been releasing records for more than 15 years before she took the stage that night
Hart says she didn’t actually watch the performance until she was home for the holidays with her family. “To have my mother watch that and see that — she’s just like the center of my life — it was really something else, definitely the highlight of my life, says Hart.

National parks to visit

When Yellowstone became our first national park in 1872, it was a uniquely American idea. Ever since, we’ve had a deep and abiding affection for them. Here are our picks for three to see this year.

The pull of this park is its enduring mystery: Why did roughly 5,000 Anasazi simply disappear — eight centuries ago — from the cliffs and mesas that had been their home for more than 700 years? They left behind a large network of cliff dwellings, irrigation networks and artifacts that offer a fascinating glimpse into a society that inexplicably vanished. Pinnacles, Calif. Pinnacles is the newest national park (it had been a national monument), added in January. It’s a popular destination for rock climbers and hikers, due to its many rocky spires and crags, but it’s also home to more than 30 endangered California condors. And the chances of spotting one of these impressive birds — whose wingspans are nearly 10 feet — are very good.

Teen texting at the wheel tied to more driving risks Study. The more frequently students reported texting and driving, the more likely they were to also answer “yes” to other risky behaviors.
The CDC found that four in every nine students had texted while driving in the past month. / THINKSTOCK
Teenagers who text while driving are also more likely to engage in other risky activities, such as riding with an intoxicated driver or not wearing a seatbelt, a new study suggests. Researchers from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found four in every nine high school students had sent or received texts while driving in the past month. “Considering it’s against the law for teens to be texting while driving in 45 states, it’s a little concerning,” said Emily Olsen, a health statistician in the CDC’s Division of Adolescent and School Health and the report’s lead author. Past studies conducted in single states have found anywhere from one quarter to almost three quarters of teenagers text while
driving, the study team wrote yesterday in Pediatrics. To get a more nationally representative picture, Olsen and her colleagues analyzed responses to the CDC’s annual youth risk survey. On the 2011 survey, conducted in public and private schools across the country, 8,505 high school students ages 16 and older were asked about potentially dangerous driving behaviors they had engaged in over the past month. Just under 45 percent had texted while driving at least once during that span, and close to 12 percent of teens said they texted behind the wheel every
day. The more frequently students reported texting and driving, the more likely they were to also answer “yes” to other risky behaviors, the researchers found. “It’s concerning that kids are participating in these multiple behaviors, either while they’re driving or while they’re a passenger,” Olsen told Reuters. “Each one of these things is quite dangerous [on its own].” REUTERS
Scary statistic
34% Of students say they texted in the car daily
Talk to your kids Olsen said that parents have the best chance of being able to curb unsafe activities in the car by continuing to talk with their children about safe driving even after they have their license. Teens, she pointed out, are already more likely to get into — and have trouble getting out of — dangerous situations on the road, due to their inexperience.
•
“Anything that takes their attention away from the task of driving, it can wait,” she said. Parents who are worried about their teens’ driving behavior should reach out to their pediatrician or a school counselor, experts advised, as that risk-taking might reflect other underlying problems.

HAVE YOU HAD YOUR ANNUAL EXAM?
JIM GAFFIGAN “Being a parent is incompatible with just about everything, if you want to do it right,” says the comic and father of five.
PARENTING IS FUNNY As a nationally touring comic, Jim Gaffigan is no stranger to hectic schedules and sleepless nights. His new book “Dad is Fat” is the newest addition to an extensive comedic career. In the book, Gaffigan applies his trademark self-effacing humor to observations about parenting. He’d like you to buy a copy so that his seven-member family can finally upsize from their jam-packed two-bedroom place in Manhattan. How crazy is life with five kids under 8 in a twobedroom? It is insane. But everyone who lives in New York or a metropolitan area is sacrificing a lot of space. No one moves to New York because they can get more space. But I like convenience too much! I can put my kids to bed, and 10 minutes later be onstage
Have your kids seen your comedy? It’s a very strange occupation to attempt to explain to a kid. As a comedian, you also have an additional parenting crisis — you have to teach kids to be polite, and not be joking around all the time.
somewhere. What was your thought process while writing the book? I wanted this book to be observational and substantive. And I focused it on hopefully being funny. As far as parenting goes, I have no idea what I’m doing! This is not an advice book, a confessional or a complaint.
Parenting so many little kids seems incompatible with the lifestyle of a stand-up comedian. Being a parent is incompatible with just about everything, if you want to do it right. I intentionally didn’t bring my kids up in my act for a couple years. I like my stand-up to be universal. On Twitter, I posted different comments I wouldn’t say in my stand-up, and that led to the book.

The shaggier, the better At first glance, the beard is an international symbol of hipsterdom. But closer inspection reveals a lot of things. We look at five popular types and what they mean. “I only realized what a phenomenon it was when I started working on my book ‘100 beards, 100 days,’” says the photographer Jonathan Daniel Pryce. “I stumbled upon this entire subculture that I knew nothing about.” Yes, beards are in a boom period, and long may they reign. To celebrate this hairy moment, we check out the microtrends among the city’s urban tribes.

He obviously works in the media — nobody else could get away with Rasputin’s beard. The unkempt look takes hours of hair manipulation and the use of premium grooming products (but he’ll never admit to it).

Don’t forget to involve third party in your neighborly disputes Re: “Noisy neighbors driving you crazy? How to deal” (Metro, May 13) Ms. Schneiderman neglects to mention that you might have to get the Human Relations Department involved if the harrassment continues. They are required to interview both parties and resolve things. Also, you can get names in case you have to file a private criminal complaint. It can be hard to get renters’ names.
Catholic naming of saints is rife with hypocrisy How nice that Pope Fancis has elevated to sainthood hundreds of Catholics who were slain for refusing to convert to Islam. Rangers rout Capitals in dominant Game 7 NHL playoffs. New York advanced to the second round with a near-perfect performance. For the first time since the 1973 quarterfinals, the Rangers and Bruins will meet in the Stanley Cup playoffs as the Original Six brethren advanced to the Eastern Conference Semifinal with Game 7 wins last night. In the ultimate win-orgo-home-for-the-summer game, the Rangers routed the Capitals, 5-0, last night at the Verizon Center. Trailing in the series 3-2, the Rangers won Games 6 and 7. Last night’s win was the first in the series for either team on the road. It was also the first Game 7 road win in franchise history. Arron Asham’s offwing goal 13:19 into the match was the series winner. Henrik Lundqvist stopped all 35 shots he faced to record his eighth career playoff shutout.

What went right
1
Everything — Well, it’s true, just about everything went right for the Rangers in a totally dominant Game 7 victory.
2
Unsung heroes — The stars didn’t exactly come out in Game 7 as you’d expect. Sure, Lundqvist was perfect, but Arron Asham, Taylor Pyatt and Mats Zuccarello provided three of the four goals.
3
King Henrik — It wasn’t more than a couple days ago people were saying Braden Holtby was better than Lundqvist. That is not true anymore.
Taylor Pyatt, Michael Del Zotto, Ryan Callahan and Mats Zuccarello also scored for the Rangers. Ten players recorded at least one point, led by Derick Brassard and Steve Eminger, who each had two assists. The plus-3 rating Del Zotto and Anton Stralman finished with led 16 players. Boston defeated Toronto, 5-4, in overtime. Trailing 4-2 with 1:22 left in regulation, Milan Lucic and Patrice Bergeron potted back-to-back goals to force the extra session. Bergeron scored the series-deciding goal 6:05 into overtime.
