Seven people were found trespassing at the Quabbin Reservoir at about 12:30 a.m.

Tuesday. The reservoir is the main source of water for most of Boston and the city’s surrounding communities.

Police said there were no signs of any crime other than trespassing and the seven people, who said they were chemical engineers and just wanted to see the reservoir, will be summonsed to court at a later date.

Police said they would step up patrols and the Massachusetts Water Resources Authority said additional testing revealed no compromise in the water system.

It was a frightening early morning for a mother and her teenage daughter after four armed men broke into their Roxbury home and took the girl.

Police were called to 43 New Whitney St. in Roxbury at about 1:30 a.m. for a home invasion.

When officers arrived, they spoke with the mother who said four men wearing dark-hooded sweatshirts and masks forced their way into her home with guns. They spoke to the woman in Spanish and repeatedly told her

They then tied her hands with wire and went up to the daughter’s room. They tied her up, blindfolded her and

took her, along with the family’s van and a flat-screen TV and PlayStation, which were still boxed.

After several descriptions of the stolen van, the suspects and daughter were broadcast to officers, the teen was found less than an hour later. At about 2 a.m., police located the 16-year-old girl near a Dunkin’ Donuts in Dorchester. Her hands were still tied.

A short distance away, police found the van and TV. Officers searched the area for the group and the black sedan that the teen said she was transferred to, but the suspects were able to flee.

For example, in 2010 there were about 478 crash incidents reported. And in 2010 and 2011 combined, there were four total cyclist deaths. The report acknowledged that those numbers are likely underreported as emergency personnel are not notified of all crashes.

Also rising was the city’s daily ridership, which averaged about 56,644 last year. In 2010, ridership was closer to 47,600.

Mayor Thomas Menino said that the city now has a goal of reducing the cyclist injury rate by 50 percent by 2020.

Walsh calls for ballot change

Lawyer: Accused kidnapper intends to plead not guilty The Castro case. An Ohio prosecutor last week vowed to try to bring murder charges that could carry the death penalty.

The man charged with holding three women captive and raping them during a decade in his home plans to plead not guilty to criminal charges, one of his lawyers said yesterday.

The lawyer, Jaye Schlachet, said in a phone interview that the suspect, Ariel Castro, 52, is on suicide watch in Cuyahoga County jail in Ohio, but it was not clear whether Castro planned to go to trial.

Castro last week was charged with four counts of kidnapping and three counts of rape. The three women kidnapped escaped from his home

in Cleveland. The news that the three had been held for so long in such a populated neighborhood stunned the close-knit community. Two of the women were held in harsh conditions, restrained with chains and duct tape for long periods of time.

In an earlier interview with Cleveland’s WKYC television, another of Castro’s lawyers, Craig Weintraub, said his client was not a “monster.”

An Ohio prosecutor last week vowed to try to bring murder charges that could carry the death penalty against Ariel Castro.

Those charges would stem from forced miscarriages that police say were suffered by one of his victims. The initial police report on the case said that at least five times after impregnating Knight, Ariel Castro allegedly starved and beat her in the abdomen in an effort to induce miscarriages.

O.J. Simpson takes the witness stand in a bid for new robbery trial O.J. Simpson took the witness stand in a Las Vegas courtroom yesterday seeking a new trial in an armedrobbery case that sent him to prison five years ago.

Simpson, 65, was called to testify in the third day of a hearing into his claims that the lawyer who served as his defense attorney mishandled the Nevada robbery case.

He was brought to court from a Nevada prison where he is serving a sentence of up to 33 years for the 2007 incident, in which he and five other men stormed into a room at the Palace Station Hotel and Casino and took thousands of dollars in memorabilia from a pair of sports collectors at gunpoint.

LulzSec hackers ‘at cutting edge’ of cyber crime, London court told at sentencing Four British hackers who took part in 2011 cyber-attacks on targets ranging from the CIA to Sony were audacious, arrogant men whose motivation was “anarchic self-amusement,” a court heard yesterday.

The men, who have pleaded guilty to a variety of offences, were members of the hacking collective LulzSec that caused millions of dollars of damage to computer networks during an online crime spree they boasted about on Twitter.

US sets health care innovation initiative A healthy balance.

The program is aimed at cutting costs while improving results for federal health service providers.

The Obama administration on Wednesday announced a $1 billion initiative to fund innovations in federal health care programs aimed at cutting costs while improving the health results.

The Department of Health and Human Services said the money will be used to award and evaluate projects that test new payment and delivery models for federal programs including Medicare, Medicaid and the Children’s Health Insurance Program.

The announcement marks the second round of innovation initiatives for the administration under President Barack Obama’s 2010 Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. Korea sanctions delay work on country’s nuclear arms Increasingly tough financial sanctions, an arms embargo and other international restrictions on trade with North Korea have significantly delayed expansion of Pyongyang’s illicit nuclear arms program, according to a confidential report by a U.N. panel of experts seen by Reuters yesterday.

The latest annual report by the U.N. sanctions-monitoring group comes as the United States seeks to convince China that applying economic and other sanctions against its neighbor is crucial to halting the program.

The document covers the period up through last month, diplomats said, so it was too early to measure the effect the latest round of U.N. sanctions adopted in March. In the report to the U.N. Security Council’s North Korea sanctions commit-

tee, the panel also recommended sanctioning three North Korean entities and 12 individuals.

The three entities the panel said should be blacklisted are the newly created Ministry of Atomic Energy Industry, the Munitions Industry Department of the Central Committee of the Korean Workers Party, and the State Space Development Bureau.

The individuals the panel wants sanctioned include the atomic energy industry minister, once he is nominated, and four senior officials at the KWP Munitions Industry Department.

It also recommends the blacklisting of one national from Kazakhstan and two from Ukraine, for their involvement in North Korea-related arms deals. REUTERS

Among potential violations the panel listed were the seizure by a U.N. member state of aluminum alloys suspected to be nuclearrelated in 2012 and the seizure of missile-related items bound for Syria in May 2012.

There’s blood on The cost. Your clothing comes at a terrible human price.

Western consumers, including those in the U.S., benefit from cheaper retail costs.

But the tide may be turning.

The euphoria was understandable when rescuers pulled 19-year-old Reshma Begum alive from the wreckage of the Rana Plaza garment factory in Dhaka, Bangladesh last week.

More than 1,127 were killed and thousands more injured when the factory fell on April 24. It had been 17 days since anyone had been found alive.

Even in a country where life expectancy is low, the devastating collapse sparked protests, with rioters calling for the owner of the factory to be hanged. The outrage was worldwide — and had previously been missing among Western observers and consumers about the working conditions in factories in Bangladesh.

They have been deplorable for years while churning out cheap clothes for some of the West’s best-known clothing brands.

Despite its small size, Bangladesh is the second-largest garment exporter in the world.

The U.S. is its largest exporting partner, with 19.4 percent of exports coming to the States.

Wal-Mart alone does more than $1 billion worth of manufacturing in the severely impoverished country.

But while everyone is quick to point at the labels that produce their clothing there — JCPenny, Gap, Sears and Zara, among thousands of others — Chris Rhomberg, associate professor of Sociology at Fordham University who specializes labor and labor movements, says it’s a very complex and multilayered situation.

“These labels don’t actually own the factories in Bangladesh,” he notes. “They contract the work out to contractors. But this is how the garment industry works: The contractor then contracts them out to subcontractors that are even cheaper and creates this enormous pres-

sure on all the labels to go even cheaper.”

Rhomberg and others in his field call this continual outsourcing and downward push of cost the “race to the bottom.”

“Bottom” is an apt term.

Since there is little to no direct oversight by these Western clothing brands, workers making these garments work in shockingly unsafe and unregulated factories. Many are forced to work seven days a week, are bullied into working overtime and the youngest of them — mainly young women, often as young as 10 — earn as little as $400 per year.

“No company is willing to spend the money for safety, adequate standards and wages if that makes their product more expensive than their competitors’,” notes Rhomberg. “If you allow this race to the bottom to occur, there is pressure on each one to go cheaper.”

And who is cheap? Women and children. Estimates vary, but up to 30,000 children are said to toil away in the sweatshops. The average age of the children is 13, of whom 10 percent, according to the U.S. Department of Labor, are married by the age of 10.

“In a recent visit to Bangladesh, a Department of Labor official spoke with children who … reported that, like adult workers, they are often paid two to four weeks late, and rarely paid extra for overtime,” a USDL report stated.

Out of the 3.5 million people who work in Bangladesh factories, 85 percent of them are women. Although the principle of women working in this predominantly Muslim country has been accepted — largely for economic reasons — they still face paternalism, at best, and outright, blatant discrimination at worst, according to the European Union, which noted high levels of forced, early marriage and domestic abuse.

But even with this global spotlight shining brightly on the working conditions in Bangladesh — and the international outcry almost overwhelming — change is still very hard to initiate.

There is immense international pressure for brands to sign the binding Fire and Building Safety Agreement, which protects garment workers. This five-year accord,

Activist uses camera to illustrate factory horrors The images that accompany this story were taken by Taslima Akhter, a Dhaka-based activist for the rights of women garment makers in Bangladesh and a talented photojournalist.

It shows two workers, a man and a woman, locked in a final embrace in death. Akhter took the image shortly after the collapse of the garment factory on April 24.

Akhter, 39, works as a photography tutor at Pathsala University, Bangladesh. In 2011 she participated the summer course on human rights and photography at New York University.

Considering photography as a part of her activism, she works on gender-environmental-cultural issues and the issues of social discrimination.

which H&M and Zara signed this week, promises that they will not hire manufacturers and contractors whose clothing factories fail to meet safety standards; it will also commit them to paying for repairs and renovations.

The Bangladeshi government is acting as well — they are raising the minimum wage for workers and will make it easier for them to unionize.

Still, the Gap, JCPenny and, most notably, Wal-Mart had refused to sign as of yesterday afternoon. Wal-Mart believes that their own safety plans are enough.

“Wal-Mart believes its safety plan meets or exceeds the IndustriALL proposal, and will get results more quickly,” the company said in a statement.

A major U.S. retail trade group yesterday spoke out against a Bangladesh safety

accord, saying that signing on would expose American companies to a legally questionable binding arbitration provision.

“The accord veers away from commonsense solutions and seeks to advance a narrow agenda driven by special interests,” said Matthew Shay of the National Retail Federation.

Unionizers and labor activists worry that if these garment behemoths don’t join the pact, the agreement will lack influence.

Still, H&M’s decision to sign the accord is crucial, said Scott Nova, of Worker Rights Consortium, in Women’s Wear Daily.

“They are the single largest producer of apparel in Bangladesh, ahead even of Wal-Mart.

This accord now has tremendous momentum.”

Sister act: Haimâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s sonic harmony Music. These three California sisters are just regular girls, aside from the huge rush of success theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re enjoying.

If you were at the Vampire Weekend show at the Agganis last night, and got there early enough to catch the openers, then you already know Este, Danielle and Alana Haim. If not, well, you should get to know them.

The three sisters are typical 20-somethings who love Kendrick Lamar and dance parties.

They also happen to be a much buzzed about young band. Haim â&#x20AC;&#x201D; pronounced like â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;timeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; â&#x20AC;&#x201D; are on tour with Vampire Weekend and are playing major music festivals this summer, including Governors Ball, Bonnaroo, Lollapalooza, the Reading Festival and Glastonbury.

They only started releasing music last year and are currently in the studio putting the finishing touches on their first studio album. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We can only have one first album,â&#x20AC;? Este, the oldest, says. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We want to make sure we love it.â&#x20AC;?

For the Haim sisters, music is a family affair.

Their dad played the drums and their mom was a guitar player and singer.

Their grandmother was a piano teacher. The family would gather in the living room playing oldies like â&#x20AC;&#x153;Brown Eyed Girl.â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;Our dad put us on the drums as soon as we could

hold our heads up,â&#x20AC;? Este says. â&#x20AC;&#x153;At that point we were just banging on things.â&#x20AC;?

As high schoolers, they tinkered with other bands. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I was in a couple of bands and simultaneously in a band with my family,â&#x20AC;? Este says. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Nothing ever felt as good as when I played with them. My sisters are much better musicians than the dudes I played with.â&#x20AC;?

The sisters are also inseparable friends. In L.A., Este and Alana live together and Danielle lives a five-minute walk away. â&#x20AC;&#x153;When weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re not working, weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re still hanging out,â&#x20AC;?

Este says. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We spend a lot of time together â&#x20AC;&#x201D; and itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not because we have to...We always have the most fun when weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re together.â&#x20AC;?

If there’s one spirit that most of us associate with the warmer seasons, it’s rum.

That’s because most of it is produced in the tropical island climates we spend all winter longing for. While we can’t necessarily transport ourselves to the Caribbean on a whim, a trip to RumBa at the InterContinental Hotel offers a more cost-effective, and immediate, fix.

With the opening of its summer patio season around the corner — and a recent expansion of the waterfront fixture just completed — now seems like a good time to set sail on the molasses seas.

A second, 10-seat bar and numerous high-top tables were added to the space, which now overlooks the Fort Point Channel and the Boston Tea Party Ship and Museum (those dudes knew a thing or two about rum, as you might recall). They probably didn’t have as many to

choose from back then as we do today, however. RumBa has some 100 options from around the world, including many from lesser-known regions that should come as a pleasant surprise to drinkers with palates accustomed to a narrow repertoire of silver and spiced rums.

A recent visit found us drinking our way through the sip-able Guatemalan silver Montecristo and the Clement V.S.O.P. Rhum Agricole Vieux. The latter, a Martinique, agricole-style rum made from

sugar cane juice and aged for at least four years, contains hints of dry caramel and light pepper. Continuing this progression, we moved on to the deep spice and tropical banana notes of Guatelmalan Ron Zacapa 23, ending our makeshift tropical journey with the new, must-try sipping rum, the Venezuelan Diplomatico.

“This is the stuff dreams are made of,” bartender Marshall McGlynn enthused.

You wouldn’t want to use the latter two spirits in a cocktail per se, although RumBa’s

menu has plenty of tiki classics marrying the two. The Boston Mama — a play on the Bahama Mama — is made with Bacardi 8 and Bacardi 151, plus coconut, coffee liqueur, fresh grenadine and lemon and pineapple juices.

It will put you in your beach chair. McGlynn, like most of the staff, is both knowledgeable and ready to serve as your cruise director through a world of rum you didn’t know even know existed — or the one you’ve been dreaming about returning to for months.

URBAN PICNICS: DINE IN THE GREAT OUTDOORS, SORTA, ON THESE ‘HIDDEN’ PATIOS just last fall and is embarking on its first patio season. The Blue Room’s little sister shares its brick-shrouded, basement level patio, but its space feels wholly separate and more casual.

Their charcuterie, made inhouse, and cheese platters are perfect sharable snacks. New to the menu is a fried chicken dinner, also for sharing. Fixings include biscuits with locally made honey and a bitter slaw of radicchio, cucumber, fennel and thyme. All the fixings of an urban picnic beneath stars.

The mercury in our thermometer is finally on the rise, which means that patio dining around town is similarly peaking. We sought out two new, out-of-the way patios to get in on the action.

Benefitting from the advantage of height, the Sinclair’s second-floor deck is hidden from Harvard Square street traffic.

Though still a recent addition to the hood’s culinary scene, their menu has already become a drunken night’s best ally — namely their disco fries, soaked in American cheese sauce and scattered with jalapenos.

The club’s offerings extend beyond late-night snacks, however. They’ve got a full menu with sophisticated seafood dishes like crisply battered oysters garnished with pickled celery, which adds an intriguing flavor twist to the shellfish standby. Take advantage of the new patio — which boasts hardwood pine tabletops, twinkling lights and a playlist spun by knowledgeable staffers — to nosh on such summery dishes.

Claude Julien is here to stay. While it was speculated that the Bruins head coach might be on the hot seat due to Boston’s inconsistent play this season, B’s general manager Peter Chiarelli squashed those thoughts yesterday on WEEI’s Salk & Holley show.

“I feel strongly about our coach and his job is safe,” Chiarelli said. “As long as I’m here, his job is safe. … He’s been producing consistently. He’s a terrific coach.” MATT BURKE

Patriots release DT Kyle Love The Patriots released defensive tackle Kyle Love yesterday with a “nonfootball injury designation.”

Love was reportedly diagnosed with type 2 diabetes this month. Love was an important part of the Patriots defensive line the past two seasons, giving Vince Wilfork help up front while becoming one of New England’s top run stuffers. 76ers’ Young in hot water 76ers guard Nick Young is being accused of sexual assault after a woman filed a civil lawsuit against Young in a Los Angeles court.

With each NHL playoff series that passes, it’s wise to reassess teams, coaches and players, realizing that the script can dramatically change in the next round. The Bruins and Rangers both survived taxing seven game series’ against the Maple Leafs and Capitals, respectively, and it was in spite of some of their top players making little happen in the first round. Much of the focus in the series will be regarding which teams’ big guns finally step up and which team has stars that continue to wilt in the post-

season.

Whichever team gets more of the same, odds are they’ll be sent packing for the summer.

In Boston, Brad Marchand was the B’s leading scorer in the regular season with 18 goals and 18 assists while Tyler Seguin was tied for third on the team with 16 goals and 16 assists. Along with Patrice Bergeron, that trio was the Bruins’ most consistent line all season. Against Toronto, Bergeron (three goals, one assist) redeemed himself with an incredible Game 7 performance (two goals, one assist), but Marchand was held to three assists and Seguin had just one assist in the entire series. The Bruins and Rangers haven’t met in the postseason in a mind-boggling 40 years, but the Bruins have certainly held up their end of the bargain. The B’s have missed the postseason just five times since New York won the 1973 five-game series.

Derek Stepan (18 goals, 26 assists) and Rick Nash (21 goals, 21 assists) were New York’s top two scorers in the regular season, but Stepan was held to two goals against Washington and Nash — their big offseason acquisition — managed only two assists. The Rangers struggled

to score against the Caps, with just 16 goals in seven games, and that includes five in Game 7 vs. the Capitals.

Much of that is due to Stepan and Nash dragging New York’s first line down with them. Ryan Callahan is the Rangers’ best all-around player (an American Bergeron) but also had a hard time with Braden Holtby and Washington, finishing the series with just one goal and two assists.

There are many individual matchups and games within the game that develop in every NHL playoff series but it’s definitely worth keeping an eye on these underachieving players who all have the ability to break out in this round.

In their last 11 games, Ortiz and Napoli are both 8-for-43 (.186), combining for just five doubles, three home runs and seven RBIs. Although those numbers, aside from the average, may not seem horrendous, these are the No. 4 and No. 5 hitters in the lineup and the offensive leaders of the team.

Ortiz and Napoli are the key to Bostonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s offense as shown in a 10-game stretch from April 22-May 2, in which the team went 8-2. The tandem went a combined 26-for49 (.531) with 13 doubles, six home runs and 24 RBIs. Ortizâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s drop in production may be connected to soreness

No one is expecting the duo to hit a combined .531 all season, but a difference of 345 percentage points is very alarming in two separate 10game spans over a three week period.
